Double charity challenge for Hörmann MD

David Newcombe will be taking part in the
Hope Italian Job and the Great North Run
just four days apart

A Leicestershire businessman has taken on two intense physical challenges within a week, in a bid to raise funds for charity.

David Newcombe, managing director of garage and industrial door manufacturer Hörmann (UK) Ltd, cycled more than 350 miles through the Alps for Hope Against Cancer, before strapping on his trainers for Alzheimer’s Society and taking part in the Great North Run.

The dementia research organisation has been chosen as Hörmann’s charity of the year, so staff teams have been putting their mental and physical agility to the test in a series of events and trials. David has already covered 10km, as part of the large Hörmann team, at the Farmageddon obstacle run near Melton Mowbray in April and is now looking forward to the half marathon.

For Hope’s Italian Job pedal-power challenge, David will be joined by 73 other keen cyclists, who will cover the impressive distance in just four days. The riders’ fitness will be pushed to the limit, with over 16,000 ft of climbing on route.

Setting off from the shores of Lake Geneva on 5 September, the cyclists traversed the picturesque scenery of the Swiss Alps before descending to Milan four days later (yesterday). David will be rushing home today to get ready for the Great North Run, which takes place in Tyneside this coming Sunday, the 13th September.

David commented:

“I heard about the Italian Job through Daly Systems, who I know do a lot of work with Hope. I’ve been cycling for a number of years, so naturally I was intrigued and signed up straight away; it should be an exhilarating ride.

“I’ve been training when possible but really concentrating on the bike with not much, and certainly not enough, running. I have no idea how the run will go and I’m certainly not expecting to beat any records but all the way I’ll be thinking about my Dad, who we lost to dementia last year, and will be proudly supporting Alzheimer’s Society who do great work.”

Over the bank holiday weekend, David cycled 100 miles on a turbo trainer at his local pub, The Old Black Horse in Houghton-on-the-Hill, building both his fitness and awareness of the challenges. After 4 hours and 33 minutes of pedalling, David secured an extra £180 in sponsorship for the two events.

Having already reached his fundraising targets for both challenges, raising over £1,200 for Hope and more than £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Society, David is now hoping to secure a few extra donations before he sets off to Italy in a few days’ time.
