Gerry Judah, the Artist behind the Goodwood Festival of Speed Central Feature shares his story ahead of the Festival opening

Almost nobody among the 200,000-plus visitors to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will leave without an image of the iconic Central Feature in their memory cards or mobile phones.

In the course of 21 years, these dramatic works of art on the lawn of Goodwood House have trumpeted the arrival of the greatest live action festival of motoring in the world – and all of them have been created by one man.

Gerry Judah is the artist who uses up to 150 tonnes of steel, has spent months of preparation and sketched many designs, working with various engineers in order to create each of the pieces that have graced the Festival of Speed since 1997. That first Central Feature was a tribute to Ferrari, and has been followed by displays honouring the likes of Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and even the life of Bernie Ecclestone.

This year’s Central Feature is one that is sure to resonate with British motoring enthusiasts, as for the first time Aston Martin will be in pride of place over the Hill.

"It's absolutely wonderful that Aston Martin will star for the first time on the Central Feature at this year's Festival of Speed, presented by Mastercard,” commented the Duke of Richmond.
“Seventy years ago, Aston Martin first raced at Goodwood and, 10 years later, our histories were forever linked when it sealed the 1959 World Sportscar Championship here at Goodwood Motor Circuit in September of that year. It was also in 1959 that Aston Martin launched its works at Newport Pagnell – so 2019 is a perfect time for us to celebrate Aston Martin's past, present and future success."

Gerry Judah’s professional relationship with the Duke of Richmond began when the Duke worked as one of the top commercial photographers in the UK and Judah was a set designer. When the idea occurred of creating a focal point for the burgeoning Festival of Speed, the Duke then turned to his collaborator to turn the idea into a towering metal reality.
Judah says: “The process can take anywhere between four to nine months. It all depends on how soon the featured marque gets involved. I will then sit down with the company to get an idea of what they want to express, their spirit and vision.”
Thanks to his own trained eye and deep personal involvement in every aspect of the event, the Duke of Richmond is very active in the process of evolving each design.
“There is definitely a form of collaboration with His Grace. Because of our history, there's a lot of dialogue as we both know where we want the Central Feature to go.”
Often, the Central Features appear to defy physics – such as the 52-metre Porsche sculpture in 2018, which rose from a steel spine just 12 centimetres in diameter. Yet as Judah points out, physics cannot be cheated despite all appearances to the contrary.
“Every Central Feature is built by closely working with engineers and fabricators,” He said. “It’s vital to collaborate on a project this size this to ensure the Central Features are structurally sound and can withstand the elements for several days.”
The Central Features are also constructed using innovative techniques. The 2015 Lotus Central Feature was built by welding 6mm flat metal sheets together.
“The way we cut and welded the sheets together created a stiff monocoque. The shape and skin of the Central Feature became its structure,” Judah explains.
The 3D infinity loop design was made up of 11 sections, transported by articulated lorries and a police escort.

With 21 Central Features to his name, it’s difficult to pick a favourite, but for Judah it is the 2011 Jaguar E-Type Central Feature, celebrating 50 years of the E-Type:
“It was just a very holistic design.” Made up of 150 tonnes of painted 12mm steel, the Feature rose to the height of 28 metres. The metal, previously used in gas pipes, was donated by JLR owner Tata Steel, with the entire sculpture taking months to install.
The 50 Years of E-Type remains the only Central Feature that has not been recycled. “Jaguar are planning to re-site it in front of their factory,” Judah says.
Although the cars are the stars in every sense at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Judah is pleased to have given context to the Central Feature through his work. Rather than concentrating on the type or make of the cars that he is representing, he has always sought to convey what the subject means in a much broader sense.
“They represent dynamics, speed, engineering and celebration – everything the Festival stands for," he said.
This year’s Central Feature will be unveiled to the public on the opening day of the Festival, 4 July.

Hospitality packages are available throughout the weekend. Four-day and Saturday tickets are now sold out. A limited number ot tickets for Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Sunday 7th July remain available from www.goodwood.com or call the Goodwood Ticket Office on 01243 755 055.

DHF launches Best Practice Guide for Key Copy Protection

DHF has announced the launch of its Best Practice Guide entitled: How to obtain Key Copy Protection: security and protection advice regarding copying of keys which offers information on minimising the risk of a security breach by preventing the unauthorised copying of keys.

To copy a key, it is necessary to obtain a suitable key “blank” onto which the individual key code can be copied.  Many generic key blanks are readily available to UK locksmiths and key cutters, making obtaining key copies convenient, but a risk to security.

For some installations, that risk is unacceptable, and there is a need to prevent the unauthorised copying of keys.  An effective way of achieving this is where the lock manufacturer restricts the availability of suitable key blanks.  This, of course, is only possible if the lock manufacturer can prevent anyone else supplying the blanks without his or her permission.

The objective of DHF’s Best Practice Guide is to clarify this complicated area of law to enable claims about security and protection against unauthorised copying to be appropriately evaluated.

DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry explains:
“There is a definite misunderstanding in the marketplace about the most effective way to provide protection for a key.
“It is important to understand that this level of key control cannot be offered through key copyright, or design registration and, in fact, the most effective way manufacturers can restrict the availability of key blanks is by using a lock and key mechanism that is patented (cylinder and lock together).
“DHF’s new Best Practice Guide offers concise and comprehensive direction on how to achieve key copy protection, concludes Bob”.
Ultimately, it is the manufacturer who must have control and the ability to restrict the distribution of key blanks to ensure that the possibility of a security breach is properly managed.

To obtain a copy of the guide visit www.dhfonline.org.uk and search ”Key Copy Protection

Excellence in Ironmongery showcased in GAI Yearbook

A new publication containing the latest door hardware advice for architects and specifiers and showcasing best practice internationally has been launched by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI).

The GAI Yearbook contains architectural ironmongery and technical standards advice and has been created to recognise the importance of the professional partnership between architects and architectural ironmongers.

There is guidance for sourcing door and window hardware professionals, including a list of all Registered Architectural Ironmongers (RegAI) who can help put together a compliant and robust hardware schedule.

Angie Corkhill, director of the GAI, says:
“When it comes to architectural ironmongery, even the smallest error can impact the performance of the door, the fire integrity and flow of the building. It’s a complex industry and a hard subject to master, so we hope that this publication will encourage architects to use a RegAI on all future projects.”

RegAIs are fully qualified architectural ironmongery professionals who have completed their GAI Diploma and have committed to maintaining a high level of knowledge, keeping fully up-to-date with the latest legislation, industry standards and products through the GAI’s CPD programme.

Within the Yearbook, Jonathan Hall, director of architectural practice AHMM, has given an exclusive interview talking about AHMM’s projects and award wins, architectural ironmongery and the specification process.

Jonathan also was also a judge for this year’s Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards, organised by the GAI in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The GAI Yearbook showcases the winning projects of the Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards from the UK and internationally, giving an overview of each project and the ironmongery specification. It also includes a comprehensive update on ironmongery standards from GAI technical manager, Douglas Masterson.

If you would like a free copy of the 2019 Yearbook, please contact info@gai.org.uk.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel - London

The project to transform the former Scotland Yard HQ of the Metropolitan Police into a prestigious five-star hotel in London is now complete. The project demanded architectural ironmongery of the highest standards of performance and appearance.

Leading Architectural Ironmonger John Planck Ltd working in collaboration with Galliard’s in-house design team selected the door hinges from the SIMONSWERK range.

In total over 1700 TECTUS concealed hinges have been installed including the TE340 3D FR, TE640 3D FR and the TE527 3D.

The Grade II-listed building has been converted into a 153 Bedroom luxury hotel by Galliard Construction which will be operated by Hyatt under its Unbound Collection.

The seven-storey building was the original headquarters of the Metropolitan Police. The home secretary at the time, Sir Robert Peel selected the building as the first headquarters for the Met in 1829.

The new hotel features include interior design references to the building’s police and military past through the use of shields, emblems and historic details etched into glass and metalwork.

SIMONSWERK are Europe´s leading Hinge Manufacturer with a history spanning more than 125 years in the manufacture of brass, aluminium and stainless-steel hinges for doors and windows.

The range includes the renowned fully concealed TECTUS hinge range and the popular TRITECH solid brass hinge with concealed bearings. SIMONSWERK hinges have also been fitted in many other hotels throughout Europe including the Ritz and the Savoy.

New App for Videx GSM Intercom Range enabling easier programming & usability

Videx, a leading manufacturer and supplier in access control and door entry kits, has added a new app to its flagship GSM intercom range, the popular entry systems that provide greater security and freedom to users.

The new app simplifies programming and usability for both end users and installers. Available for iOS and Android devices, the app allows you to program the GSM intercom system by automatically creating the SMS messages.

James Gray project manager at Videx said:
“The app is a great addition to the Videx GSM product range, enhancing the features while also providing a convenient way to manage and operate the system.
“Features include the ability to activate the door or gate either for the programmed time or to latch and unlatch it. This can be done via text message or dialling using the dial to open feature. You can also add and modify numbers called, the dial to open numbers, access codes including temporary access codes for one-time visitors, as well as proximity tags that are used to open the gate or door.”

Up to 10 GSM intercoms can be stored in the app. Settings such as master code, telephone number, call button telephone numbers and free access settings are all stored to save the user time while using the app. An advanced version of the app will also be available soon with even more features for the installer or managing agent of the system.

The app is not restricted to the GSMPRO version of the Videx GSM intercom systems and can also be used with the Digital GSM, vandal resistant GSM’s, multiple entrance 2270 interface and the GSM lite.

James added: “Users can also set up free access time periods where the gate or door can be held open for visitors. The ability to decode received messages from the intercom panel is also included and some of these messages can also be imported and saved in the app for future use. For example, if the intercom call button has already been programmed it’s possible to receive the telephone numbers for the call button and import them into the app.”

Users will be able to download the app directly from Google’s ‘Play store’ and Apple’s ‘App store’ free of change. The app can be used with all current and older model GSM intercoms.

New Openow™ app creates secure virtual key for SMARTair®

The ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware & Access Control Group has unveiled Openow, a new mobile solution for users of its SMARTair wireless access control system.

Openow allows SMARTair users to open doors with their mobile phone and the Openow app, meaning access credentials can be granted, revoked and updated instantly, from wherever the user may be.

By eliminating physical credentials, Openow helps ensure facilities managers, security administrators and business owners are more in control of their access control. This also helps save time, as there is no need for users to collect or validate a physical access card.

Fast and easy to install, information transferred between the software, smartphone App and the SMARTair device is protected by end-to-end encryption.

Alan Kent, Access Control Manager and SMARTair Specialist, said:
“Users will immediately find out how convenient Openow is to use. Individual access rights for our SMARTair system can be instantly admitted, withdrawn, or changed on the go, enhancing security while delivering the flexibility needed to amend a site’s access control at any time. Access rights can also be granted for a limited time period only; a feature that many will find useful.
“In short, the benefit of Openow is simple: if you have your phone, then you are already carrying your SMARTair keys in your pocket.”

The SMARTair Openow app is available to download now for free from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.

For further information on the Openow app, please visit assaabloyopeningsolutions.co.uk or contact their SMARTair specialist Alan Kent via email at alan.kent@assaabloy.com, or via LinkedIn.

Homeowners are opting to open-up their kitchens with bi fold doors from Quickslide

With warmer months almost upon us, many homeowners are turning to the improvements that will allow them to fully enjoy spending time at their home, with friends and family, over Summer.

Trends are showing that the kitchen is a room whose purpose is changing. No longer is it solely a space for food preparation. Instead, people’s kitchens are increasingly becoming the social hub of their home.

For a dramatic transformation, building an extension or making structural changes to the home’s interior could be the first thought as an ideal route to achieving a bright, airy and sociable kitchen space. However, it needn’t be as costly or stressful.

Award-winning manufacturers, Quickslide Windows & Doors are seeing more and more homeowners opting to transform their kitchens with the installation of bi-fold doors. It seems they’re not alone as independent studies suggest that the integration of bi-fold doors in a house is perhaps more important to new buyers than a new kitchen or conservatory.

Modern look and feel

From a tired kitchen needing a new lease of life to a new home wanting the wow-factor, upgrading the kitchen’s doors from a standard singular or sliding door to bi-folding doors can help to achieve this. Bi folds are very much on trend and their sleek, unobtrusive profile will instantly update the look and feel of modern and traditional homes alike.

Offered in aluminium and PVC-u, the material, colour and finish can be selected from a wide range of off the shelf options, presenting homeowners full design control over the aesthetics to ensure they’re in fitting with the properties look and feel.

Breath of fresh air

Not only do bi fold doors add a fashionable touch to any kitchen, they are great for the everyday, letting in large amounts of light by seamlessly joining the garden and kitchen with folding panels of glass.

Bi folds have the power to transform homeowners’ views and it is said that luscious greens of nature are calming and therapeutic; ideal for relaxing in on a warm summer day or admiring from the comfort of a cosy kitchen during the cooler months.

The large openings that such wide span doors create means homeowners experience enhanced ventilation when cooking, along with more space and better access to the garden for alfresco dining and entertaining.

New hub of the home

As well as transforming the kitchens look and feel and flooding the area with light to open up the space, bi-fold doors also change the way homeowners can use the space outside. The easy to use doors allow for year-round access to the garden.

They are ideal for keeping an eye on children playing in the garden, opening quickly and easily to extend their play area. They are also perfect for parties, events and family gatherings; the doors push neatly aside to offer more space to host, creating a hybrid indoor and garden party where people can escape a spot of rain and get a drink as well as enjoy the outside air.

In summary, bi fold doors from Quickslide are increasing in popularity with homeowners on a quest to open-up their kitchens as the designs provide a seamless progression from the inside to the outside, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment.

FX15 Threshold gets SBD

FX15, the complete Document Q, Part M threshold from leading hardware specialist MI Products is now Secured by Design. It has successfully passed PAS 24 and BS6375 part 1 and 2 tests, for security, weather performance and ease of use.

The latest test results were the final part to achieve Secured by Design certification and add to the FX15 threshold achieving Part M and ADQ compliance for accessibility.

The genuine 15mm low threshold boasts a clever security mechanism, featuring a “Slide and Lock” shoot bolt striker system and a fixed security mushroom. As the door closes, the fixed security mushroom engages into its striker. By locking the door, the shoot bolts are engaged and the door can’t disengage, lift or drop.

Ian Searle, Director at MI Products, says:
“We have designed and developed FX15 to be the complete solution for fabricators and installers. We want to make it easier for our customers to meet both Building Regulations and demands from homeowners wanting an accessible, easy to use and secure door.
“Thanks to the exclusive design of the FX15 and the impressive test results, we are adding new large fabricators to our customer base. Fabricators across the UK are taking on the compliant threshold for the exclusive benefits it offers.
“Customers are also choosing to switch to FX15 because of the ease of manufacturing. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback as the FX15 can be ‘built from the box’, with no complicated jigging or routing needed, which makes it quicker and reduces waste.
“All new setups have benefitted from our no quibble onsite support from our expert, happy to help team and our next day delivery promise.”

New Duragrain Sectional Doors from Garador

Duragrain Pine

One of the UK’s leading garage door manufacturers, Garador, have just introduced an entirely new range of sectional garage doors

The new Duragrain range is a completely new concept, where a realistic timber, natural stone or metal illustration is printed onto the outside surface of the garage door. These new designs offer customers a more graphical alternative to the paint and timber effect finishes currently available on the market.

Garador’s Duragrain range is comprised of 24 decorative colour finishes, which are comprised of 5 incredibly realistic natural stone decors, 18 authentic treated timber decors and 1 metal decor. The development of this new printing technology opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for garage door panel design, with the most unusual and unique surface finishes now possible.

Duragrain Colonial Walnut

The new Duragrain surface finish has been development for some time now, as Garador’s Managing Director Neil Discombe comments “Duragrain has been in development for a number of years, but we think it has been well worth the wait and the results really do speak for themselves.”
Neil continues “We don’t think homeowners will be disappointed with their new Duragrain sectional garage doors. The intricacies of the natural stone and timber prints are quite astonishing.”
The new Duragrain decors will give more food for thought when designing the garage and surrounding property as Garador’s Managing Director, Neil Discombe says “Duragrain will add another dimension to their design aspirations, as each of the decorative finishes imitates a natural stone, real wood and metal.”

Duragrain Rusty Steel

Duragrain has been engineered to last, with the inclusion of a protective coating on the outside of the door. This protective coating is scratch-resistant, defending the underlying print from the effects of weathering and any little knocks life throws at it. Furthermore, the inks used to print the decors are UV-resistant and colourfast, meaning that they won’t fade or wash out over time.

Garador’s Sectional garage doors already have many advantages, including excellent thermal insulation properties with 42mm insulated door sections, sturdy rubber seals on the base, sides and fascia of the door, as well as the black plastic frame leg plate to protect against corrosion. So customers can rest assured they will still be getting a product with all of the benefits they have come to expect from a Garador sectional garage door.

Duragrain will only be available on Garador Premium Linear Large door styles, and the door will be fully insulated with PU-foam at 42mm thick, making the door ideal for properties where the garage is used as a workshop or gym or for storing equipment.

Find out more by calling Garador’s friendly customer service team on 01935 443701 or visit www.garador.co.uk

DHF ‘hammers home’ importance of training following industrial door accident

Tamworth-based trade association, DHF (Door & Hardware Federation), is ‘hammering home’ the significance of appropriate training, following the tragic death of a woman killed in an industrial door incident.

The accident, which took place in August 2016, and described by Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspector, Graeme Warden, as ‘one that could have been avoided’, has resulted in Cambridgeshire-based electrical company, BS Graves (Electrical) Limited, being fined £25,000 and ordered to pay costs amounting to £6,500.

An inquest held in Huntingdon last year, heard that 40-year-old social worker, Heidi Chalkley’s hands became trapped in the shutter door mechanism as it opened. She suffered multiple fractures to her ribs, spine, arms and jawbone and died at the scene. The inquest concluded that the cause of death was misadventure because she had attempted to ride up on the door. The inquest also found that the door was not as safe as it should have been.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that sensors at the top of the door, (which should have stopped it), were incorrectly wired and did not function properly as the door opened. It was also found that BS Graves (Electrical) Limited had carried out work on the roller shutter door at Ruth Bagnall Court since 2012, and despite inspecting the door a month prior to the accident, they had failed to check and test the operation of the safety systems on the door and identify the fault. The company based in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, pleaded guilty at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

“This type of incident has been well documented in the past, with similar accidents involving children across Europe, initiating the standard EN 12453 for this type of door to include the need for protection to prevent an incident of this nature,” explains DHF’s Senior Training and Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins.

“EN 12453 has, since 2000, required that doors with the ability to lift persons be protected by one of four safety strategies:

i. the door be operated in hold-to-run by a trained user with full sight of the door, or

ii. the door be torque limited such that it cannot lift a person, or

iii. high level fail-safe beams be provided to detect a person being lifted during opening, or

iv. the door be protected by light curtains that prevent opening if a person is present on the door.

In the case of Heidi Chalkley, the high-level beams were not functional, despite being installed.”

Following the inquest, Mr Warden highlighted a lack of appropriate training of employees at BS Graves (Electrical) Limited.

“We continue to stress the vital importance of the correct level of training for all those with both legal and moral responsibility for the installation, maintenance, repair and dismantling of potentially dangerous equipment, such as industrial doors,” says DHF’s CEO, Bob Perry.
“Very tragically, this case has resulted in a fatality that could so easily have been avoided. It is absolutely imperative that those working on doors such as this, are equipped with specialist knowledge of applicable standards and legislation, together with the technical expertise to identify the hazard, assess and test the presence and function of acceptable protection systems. As this tragedy illustrates quite clearly, door system maintenance cannot be achieved by visual inspection alone or by those with insufficient training, experience or test equipment.”

DHF has published codes of practice for the industrial door, automated gate and barrier industry and provides standards and legislation training for all.

“We advise those with ownership and management responsibilities to ensure that their maintenance contractors have the professional training, qualification, and equipment required, and that managers, supervisors and operatives are suitably trained in the craft, legislation & standards.” concludes Bob.

For further information regarding technical specifications, please visit DHF’s website: www.dhfonline.org.uk

New Weight Capacity for P C Henderson's Rustic Barn Door Hardware

P C Henderson has increased the weight capacity of its range of Rustic sliding barn door style hardware as it witnesses end users combining the hardware with a variety of unique and creative door designs.

Previously certified as an 80kg system, the company carried out extensive in house testing on its Rustic 100 and Rustic Top Mount systems in order to increase the weight capacity to 100kg. The new capacity provides end users with the freedom and versatility to combine the hardware with virtually any door style and size.

Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson commented:
“Due to its timeless design features and unique aesthetic appeal, the popularity of sliding barn door style hardware shows no signs of slowing down. As popularity increases so does the creative capabilities of the end user - we’re seeing our hardware being combined with all kinds of unique and wonderful doors – from large vintage doors through to custom made elaborate works of art.
“Sliding doors which span the height of a room from floor to ceiling is also something we’re seeing a lot of, particularly in period properties with extremely high ceilings. With all of this information combined we recognised the need to increase the weight capacity of our hardware to meet customer requirements”.

Tested to 100,000 cycles, the new certification provides end users with a robust and durable system which guarantees a lifespan of 68 years, based on a 100kg door being opened/closed 4 times a day.

P C Henderson offers a number of barn door style sliding systems including Rustic 100, available in matt black, stainless steel and antique rust, which creates a traditional look with the exposed steel straps fastening down the front of the door.

Rustic Top Mount is also available which offers a stylish, contemporary alternative with is matt black hangers being mounted to the top of the door. Both systems are available in 2m and 3m track length with a fittings kit available for bi-parting door specifications.

Both systems can be complemented with P C Henderson’s new Rustic Soft Close, an easy to fit soft close accessory which catches the door in its final moments of travel in order to bring it to a gentle close. The system has been expertly designed to be one of the fastest fitting soft closes on the market, with the system simply sliding over the track fittings behind the track.

ASSA ABLOY launches unrivalled DC300G-HF Door Closer

The ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware & Access Control Group has launched an innovative new door closer that offers unrivalled performance for user flexibility and fire safety for buildings in the healthcare, education and hospitality sectors.

Unlike any other door closer in its class, the new DC300G-HF is a responsive solution, satisfying multiple door control issues for healthcare professionals, students, customers and staff. This includes flexible operation and use, while also maintaining full certification in all three modes and fitting configurations.

The DC300G-HF is fully certified in all three modes; standard, free-swing and hold-open and all three fitting configurations; fig.1, fig.61 and fig.66 – offering peace of mind and convenience for building owners, managers and installers, that they are legally covered.

There are hundreds of door-closing devices available but, when analysing their capabilities, it becomes apparent that not all are created equal. This not only applies to their adherence to fire safety laws, but also accessibility regulations. Simply put, in light of the Equality Act (2010) and Approved Document M, a building should be accessible to all – without restriction or the need for assistance.

The DC300G-HF helps meet and surpass both fire safety and accessibility requirements. In the event of a fire it reverts to a mechanical mode, either free-swing or hold-open mode. Uniquely, and for the very first time, the DC300G-HF has all the features and certification required to meet these demands, across all three modes and configurations.

The new door closer is CE Marked (a legal requirement under the Construction Products Regulation) to EN 1154 and EN 1155 in all three configurations. Furthermore, soft-motion release (from 130-75 degrees) means the door is progressively shut, preventing damage to the door set and injury to users.

The DC300G-HF is also BS 8300-2:2018 compliant. Its safety credentials and performance (free-swing or hold-open mode with variable power EN 3-6) retains low opening forces, making it the ideal product for environments with high volumes of traffic, such as schools or hotels, and where users experience movement difficulty or strength issues, like care homes.

The DC300G-HF is also incredibly flexible and cost-effective. Switching between modes on other electro-mechanical door closers can be difficult and time consuming. Often, two separate products or additional parts are required. The DC300G-HF offers a step-change in functionality, with all three modes in one product. Users can switch within seconds by simply adjusting three small bolts.

Developed, designed and tested in the UK for the UK market, the closer is also easy to retrofit and upgrade with no re-drilling required, so fire certification is not compromised. Wiring on the hinge side and a non-polarity sensitive connection also makes wiring easy.

David Hindle, Head of Door Closer Sales at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, said:
“A unique combination of flexibility and full certification makes the DC300G-HF the best-in-class, electro-mechanical rack and pinion door closer, for changing door use in busy environments. Each unit is individually tested and inspected and bears the high quality, award-winning design and guaranteed durability you come to expect from an ASSA ABLOY door closer.

“Our new DC300G-HF door closer is also part of a full suite of products, ensuring we can satisfy any requirements for high-performing and reliable door controls.”

For more information on the DC300G-HF door closer, please visit assaabloyopeningsolutions.co.uk or contact 0845 0706713 to arrange a demonstration.

Liftmaster: Ensuring the Success of any Residential or Commercial Access Project

As all professionals will know, the success of any residential or commercial access project will always be determined by the extent to which it meets at least three primary objectives:

  • it must be secure and efficient,
  • it must be comfortable and convenient to operate,
  • it must be designed to discreetly match and complement the setting.

Consistent attention to such core detail is just one of many reasons why LiftMaster, an important brand of the Chamberlain Group, has remained a market leader in this industry for so many years.

Others may manage to deliver some of these requirements, but it takes LiftMaster's long experience and mature understanding of market expectations to deliver the full package to each and every customer on time, every time.

A strategic relocation

In June 2017, LiftMaster celebrated 50 years of supplying the industry’s most trusted and dependable products – a period during which the company also brought more than 30 key industry breakthroughs to the market.

But far from contentedly resting on its laurels, Chamberlain Group has recently moved its European company headquarters Chamberlain GmbH from Saarwellingen, Germany, to the state capital Saarbrücken, some 37 kilometres to the south and a little closer to the French border.

As a result of this restructure, as of June 2019, LiftMaster can now operate from a rather more central location. And although this prestigious new site is in every respect a fully equipped modern building, its elegant and impressive architecture has also managed to preserve and convey a sophisticated, ambient sense of the site’s former history.

From a business and commercial perspective, these new offices offer a layout which facilitates more efficient communication. But in addition, the modern, open-plan design, sensitive landscaping of green areas, and provision of bicycle routes and footpaths alongside major transport links, also reflect the company’s product philosophy of sensitive and harmonious accommodation and integration of modern features and functions.

Contemporary innovation and connectivity

These new trading arrangements are a fitting acquisition for a company which employs 6,000 people worldwide and is now a global leader in all kinds of access solutions. And the secret of LiftMaster’s success is its ability to create innovative designs and products which reflect contemporary needs, without losing sight of the key essentials, nor compromising on traditional standards of workmanship.

For instance, the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital home automation may appear to be emergent technologies. LiftMaster’s own dedicated MyQ app technology (available free from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store) has enabled users to remotely control and monitor the opening of doors and entrance gates, using handheld devices such as tablets and smartphones.

A European first

The new LiftMaster LM3800W jackshaft garage door opener is yet another example of the company’s innovative, solution-oriented outlook. This is Europe’s first opener with an integrated Wi-Fi interface. With no additional gateway requirement, the unit can be easily configured to link with the home router.

And installers will appreciate the ease with which this streamlined, space-saving wall mounted unit can be fitted, as well as the intuitive, fully electronic setup procedure. Homeowners too will appreciate the unit’s inconspicuous appearance and powerful smart features, which can include comprehensive control of in-situ lighting arrangements.

Serving both industry and the private sector

Beyond its unrivalled position as the No. 1 worldwide supplier of garage door openers for professional installation, LiftMaster is also a leading manufacturer of door openers for industry and for the private sector, as well as a trusted supplier of a range of smart, secure and convenient residential and industrial access products.

So why not contact UK Sales Manager Andrew Buckler (see contact details below) to find out more about LiftMaster or to inquire about becoming an authorised dealer, and be the first to hear about updates, special offers and new products by signing up to receive the company’s regular newsletter.
