Morgan 3 Wheeler To Take On Trans-India Challenge

The exhilarating Morgan 3 Wheeler is set embark on its most arduous adventure yet, the Trans-India Challenge. The 3,500-mile, 33-day journey around India will put the 3 Wheeler to the ultimate test as it takes on one of the world’s most demanding road networks.

The Morgan Motor Company has given official backing to the car’s drivers, 73-year-old entrepreneur and philanthropist Alan Braithwaite, and his wife Pat.

In 1909, the Malvern-based car manufacturer produced its first car, a three wheeler, and the new 3 Wheeler, launched in 2011, takes inspiration from this original model.

Featuring an 82bhp S&S V-twin motorcycle engine and weighing just 525kg, it’s one of the most exhilarating cars on sale today.

Very few modifications were required for the Challenge but, to help the car cope with the rough terrain, raised suspension has been fitted, by Bury St Edmunds-based Morgan dealer Krazy Horse.

The car’s exterior, however, has changed very little and is certain to turn heads in India, where the 3 Wheeler has rarely been seen. And with no roof of any kind, the driver and passenger will be fully exposed to the elements.

The Challenge aims to raise £200,000 to support Indian aid NGO Goonj, and fund academic research into Goonj’s ‘circular economy’ model.  This sustainable approach recycles urban waste to use as ‘currency’, rewarding rural communities for improving their local environment – such as roads, water supply, hygiene or schools.

It mirrors Morgan’s ecological values, for example its use of sustainable woods in the construction of its cars and a zero-landfill policy for all materials.

The Morgan adventure has attracted support from Ralph Lauren, too.

Throughout the Challenge, the team will be wearing polo shirts from its Earth Polo range, clothing made from thread derived entirely from recycled plastic bottles and dyed using an innovative waterless process.

Steve Morris, CEO of Morgan Motor Company, said,
“The Morgan 3 Wheeler is the perfect car for the Trans-India Challenge because of the attention it brings: it’s different and it’s fun.
“You’re always on an adventure in a Morgan and you drive with a smile on your face.
“Not only does it demonstrate what a Morgan is capable of, but you also know it will bring attention to Goonj. It’s going to be a fantastic adventure all round.”

For Alan, Morgan’s support is a major boost:
“We are delighted that Morgan has recognised the significance of the Trans-India Challenge.  It will be a massive test for the car, but will certainly put Morgan firmly on the Indian map.
“With Morgan’s durability, and the materials used in the cars’ manufacture being sustainable and re-useable, this is the perfect choice of vehicle.  It is also another milestone in recognising the ‘circular economy’ model championed by Goonj.”

The adventure starts just six months after Alan underwent open heart surgery:
He added:  “I actually needed more extreme modifications than the car for this trip, but I’m confident we’ll both reach the finish line in great shape.”

The 3,500 mile Trans-India Challenge, which will start from Mumbai on 1 February 2020 and take in cities including Pune, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Puri, Kolkata, Patna, Lucknow, Agra, New Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur and Ahmedabad, before returning to Mumbai at the beginning of March.

It aims to visit 11 Goonj centres or projects along the way.

Two New CPDs Focus on Smart Technologies and Environmental Change

Architects and specifiers of door hardware products can now benefit from two new RIBA-approved CPDs on the Internet of Things (IoT) and ironmongery and the environment.

The new CPDs have been created by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) for delivery exclusively by GAI members across the country.

The CPD on ‘Ironmongery and the impact of the Internet of Things’, advises on the appropriate products for smart homes and smart buildings.

The training looks at how the rise of interrelated technology is impacting the ironmongery industry, including various smart locking and access control products. It also looks at the integration of these smart products with building management systems, as well as how future trends in technology and legislation may have further impact.

The other CPD is on ‘Ironmongery and the impact of the environment’.

The presentation is designed to highlight the environmental sustainability impact of construction products, including door hardware, and how architectural ironmongers can help to reduce carbon emissions from buildings as well as how they can also change their own processes to reduce the impact on the environment.

It covers industry initiatives and programmes including the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) activities, building certification schemes such as BREEAM and LEED, as well as ISO 14001 and other relevant environmental standards. It also discusses the role of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and how these relate to architectural ironmongery specifically.

Both CPD presentations are RIBA-approved so architects will receive double learning points for attending. The GAI now has eight RIBA-approved CPDs covering a range of issues that architects and specifiers may encounter when specifying architectural ironmongery.

For further information on the CPD seminars, contact the GAI’s technical manager, Douglas Masterson on technical@gai.org.uk.

Mul-T-Lock triumph at the National Locksmith Awards

Midlands based high-security and access solutions manufacturer, Mul-T-Lock took home one of the most coveted awards at the inaugural National Locksmith Awards this month, for Product of the Year.

The National Locksmith Awards (NLA) is the UK’s most complete industry awards for locksmiths and locksmith suppliers, rewarding them for all the hard work that so often goes unnoticed.

Mul-T-Lock was victorious in the Product of the Year category and was also awarded as runner up in the Keyless Entry Company of the Year category, due to its innovative eCLIQ technology – the advanced system which allows organisations to both grant and remove access permissions remotely.

eCLIQ technology offers a cost-effective and easy way to assign new access rights, no matter how many times they need changing. eCLIQ also minimises the risks associated with lost keys, provides clear audit trails, has enhanced security with CLIQ chip generation using AES encryption and is available in various locking options to suit a variety of applications.

More durable, more secure and more efficient than conventional locking systems, the powerful microelectronics in the programmable waterproof key, and compact electronic locking cylinder together provide higher security.

Claire Blakemore, Managing Director at Mul-T-Lock, comments:
“We are extremely proud to have been awarded Product of the Year 2019. The NLA is such a well-respected and important event in the industry, to be recognised for our work with the eCLIQ range is something we’re all very excited about. We were up against some fantastic products, so we are all thrilled that all our hard work has paid off.”

A Ringing Endorsement of the Value of being a Secured by Design (SBD) Member Company

A ringing endorsement of the value of being a Secured by Design (SBD) member company has come from Mark McEvoy, Commercial Director, of Garage Door Systems in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

The company is now producing a significant number of their ThermaRoll 77 roller garage doors every week – with around 80% of them being to SBD’s Police Preferred Specification, which requires them to be sufficiently robust to deter and reduce crime.

Since the launch of the ThermaRoll garage door in February 2018, the company is approaching £2million of garage door sales with 95% of sales taking place on the UK mainland.

Mark declared: “SBD has helped our business significantly and it’s proved invaluable with our customers and specialist installation companies – helping them have a positive experience when looking at our product offering.”

Garage Door Systems specialises in the manufacture and distribution of roller, sectional, side hinged garage doors and personnel doors. It’s also the main service and distribution centre for LiftMaster Home Automation products in the UK and Ireland.

During a recent visit to the company, National SBD Manager, Kenny McHugh, was given a tour of the factory floor and shown some of its latest equipment, such as a duo-vent extraction system that produces ‘clean’ aluminium after removing tiny filings of aluminium, known as swarf, during the manufacturing process.

ThermaRoll is made from interlocking twin walled aluminium slats each with a strengthening rigid foam core. Keeping the door securely closed are a minimum of three locking straps that incorporate heavy duty direct connect linkages for maximum resistance to forced opening.

Working with the physical security of the locking and strength of the door is Somfy’s remote control, which senses any attempt to force the door open by levering the bottom of the door upwards. An alarm sounds to provide an alert and deter further attempts at entry. It has been certified to STS 202 Issue 7 BR1.

Garage Door Systems work with Element for its testing and certification in order to reach the high standards to achieve SBD accreditation.

Mark praised their services: “Without Element’s assistance, some companies might be put off pursuing the programme – they do really hold your hand through the testing process and provide the necessary guidance.”

Mark West, Door & Window Laboratory Manager at Element, Wednesbury, commented:
“We were pleased to provide the testing and certification for Garage Door Systems’ ThermaRoll range, adding to its existing Certisecure certified products. STS 202 BR1 is a rigorous opportunist attack by Element’s highly skilled test engineers and when combined with our Certisecure scheme annual factory surveillance visit ensures Garage Door Systems’ customers will benefit from the confidence that comes from buying a certified product.”

Garage Door Systems invests heavily in research and development and is now developing an external roller shutter for new targeted markets and industries. Likely to be the first product of its kind for Ireland, the new roller shutter project presents another exciting opportunity for Garage Door Systems Ltd. It is hoped the product will become SBD accredited to further enhance the product’s credentials and provide prospective customers with additional peace of mind.

Kenny McHugh commented:
“Garage Door Systems is a great example of a company that is making the most of its SBD membership and is keen to come up with ideas about how we can work together to improve the customer experience.

“It is always a joy to visit their factory floor. With all its bustling production activity, it gives us the chance to see the very start of the process of how SBD works with manufacturers to create strong and robust products to meet the growing demand from the public for security-related products that help them be safe in their homes.”

GfA launch Compact Sectional Door Drive with Frequency Inverter

With speed and affordability at the top of the agenda for many door specifiers GfA UK Ltd has launched a new product to meet that need.

Taking advantage of all the features of GfA high speed Fi drives, and incorporating next generation plug and play features the SE 8.60 Fi sectional door drive is a must-see addition to the GfA range.

The SE 8.60 FI is the first drive unit to utilise the new SG40 compact gearbox from GfA. This new drive unit, for sprung sectional doors, meets the most common demand from industrial door companies for speed at an affordable price.

Key features of the SE 8.60 Fi
  • Compact one-box design (gearbox and motor in one housing).
  • Speed, the integrated frequency inverter delivers adjustable output speeds from 12 to 60 rpm.
  • Next generation plug and play for fast site commissioning.
  • Smooth operation, reducing wear and tear on the door and drive unit alike as well preventing cable bounce.
  • Integrated low-level emergency manual operation with optional engaging/disengaging cord sets.

The new SE 8.60 FI drive unit has integrated digital limit switch (DES) and is compatible with GfA door controls TS 970, TS 971 and TS 981.

The newly developed XES single-plug connection system simplifies electrical installation on the drive side. There is no need to loosen screws and remove covers, thereby reducing installation time.

With a total weight of just 9 kg, the SE 8.60 Fi is the lightest drive unit in the GfA range of products.

A prototype of the product was shown at R+T a few years ago, and is now in stock with GfA UK Ltd.

For more details and to place orders please contact the GfA UK Ltd Sales Team on 01926 452452 or email sales@gfa-elektromaten.co.uk.

Survey Shines Light on Bifold Door Benefits

Large glass doors are now a feature of many households. Made popular in the 1970s with the boom in ‘garden patios’, their appeal has continued to grow.

And newer trends, such as those focusing on creating a connecting ‘space’ between garden and home, have only served to strengthen demand.

But fads and trends cannot solely account for their lasting appeal. A recent survey from bifold door suppliers Vufold sought to identify why expansive bifold doors continue to remain at the heart of many homes.

The research, which asked members of the UK public what they considered to be the biggest benefits of bifold doors, found almost a third cited their ability to allow natural light to enter a home as their greatest feature.

Security, an issue which regular comes high in similar home surveys, did not make the top three — despite the high-quality security features that many bifold doors now offer.

Rick Collins, director at Vufold, said:
“Most bifold doors are manufactured with a secure multi-point locking system on the access door and shoot bolt on the additional doors. This is far safer than a standard door with only one lock.”
And this is before we even considered the security that many people feel when they have increased visibility of their garden or yard area.

Flooding the home with light

The survey revealed that 30.5% of respondents considered the natural light that can infuse a home through large glass doors the biggest benefit to bifolds.

Rick said:
“When both open and closed, external bifold doors allow sunlight to flood through and brighten up a home. This can make a room appear bigger and illuminate other interior features.”
Allowing natural light into the home also provides a range of health benefits, including a vitamin D boost, improved sleep and an effective measure against seasonal depression.

Connect the indoors and outdoors

There has also been a growing trend over the last few years of ‘bringing the outdoors in’ which can be done by matching external and internal décor and creating seamless transitions with bifold doors.

Almost a fifth of respondents to the Vufold survey thought the ability to connect the indoors and outdoors was the main benefit of having bifolds.

Rick added:
“Installing glass doors between a conservatory or kitchen and the outdoor area lets homeowners appreciate outdoor areas even when the temperature drops.”

Open-plan living on demand

Almost one in six people (15.7%) praised the feeling of space that bifold doors can create when quizzed. When used to replace an internal wall, internal bifold doors can fully opened to transform the interior into one, big open-plan space.

Rick said:
“The doors themselves save space because they stack to one side or fold flat against the wall rather than swing open. Even when shut, clear glass doors make a room appear bigger as they transfer light through. However, bifolds can add privacy as they can separate off two areas at the same time.”

Ford Offers Complimentary GT500 Track Attack Driving Experience to Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Owners

Detroit, Michigan – Ford and Ford Performance Racing School are joining forces to offer a complimentary program exclusively for owners of the all-new Shelby GT500.

GT500 Track Attack, the latest in a long line of similar owner programs offered by Ford Performance, will be the first one introduced at the new Ford Performance Racing School location, Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.

Much like sibling owner programs put on by the school, owners are given a unique opportunity to learn firsthand the capabilities of their cars with professional training from instructors. Training will happen in the classroom as well as on one of America’s best road courses and its first four-wide drag strip.

Owners of the all-new Shelby GT500 will be immersed into the performance and handling characteristics of their new cars in a controlled environment. Extensive course time teaches cornering, braking and launch techniques with a focus on the dynamics of the Shelby GT500, including its drive modes and launch control feature.

Owners will have fun learning all about the performance attributes of this thrilling car and have the opportunity to improve their driving skills.

Dave Pericak, Ford director of enterprise product line management said:
“With its supercar-level powertrain, the all-new Shelby GT500 takes Mustang to a performance level once reserved only for exotics.
“We’ve set a new standard among American performance cars with our most powerful street-legal V8 to date, plus the quickest-shifting transmission ever in a Mustang for all-out precision and speed. GT500 Track Attack is absolutely essential in helping owners understand how to get the most out of their cars.
“This promises to be an exciting experience – one that owners will never forget.”

Ford Performance Racing School will provide Shelby GT500s for participants to use in all exercises. An optional second day of on-track instruction will be conducted in Ford Mustang GTs equipped with upgraded Ford Performance suspensions and brakes.

Dan McKeever, president, Ford Performance Racing School said:

“We are looking forward to the first season of GT500 Track Attack, especially as this will be among the first programs conducted at our new facility in Concord.
“Shelby GT500 is an exceptional car and delivers an exhilarating driving experience. Our school is the perfect venue to demonstrate just what it can do, both on the track and on the strip. Our professional instructors can help anyone take their driving expertise to the next level, whether they are beginners or experienced drivers.”

Ford will cover costs of the driving school in its entirety, while owners will be responsible for their travel, hotel and optional-day Mustang GT program costs. While not yet finalized, options for owners to bring guests are being considered.

Those interested in learning more about this program should sign up here to receive additional details as they become available.

Look for Ford Performance Racing School to announce specific plans and schedules for GT500 Track Attack in the near future.

Abloy UK has presented D15 Locksmiths with the Locksmith Of The Year Award at the recent Irish Security Institute Association (ISIA) Awards 2019, held at the Powerscourt Hotel and Resort Spa, Co. Wicklow.

This annual event celebrates the success of the ISIA’s member companies, their dedication to delivering exceptional service to clients, and their commitment to innovation and outstanding service delivery. The awards also provide an opportunity to recognise those organisations and individuals that contribute to safety and security.

The ISIA Locksmith of the Year award recognises the importance and vital contribution made by locksmiths to both domestic and commercial security. With a focus on customer service, quality and expertise, the winner of this award is selected through the assessment of a case study submission combined with responses submitted through an online customer survey.

Nominees for this award are measured across a range of areas such as professionalism, customer service, quality of work and technical knowledge. This year three locksmiths were shortlisted – Crothers Security, Locksmiths.ie and winners D15 Locksmiths.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, presented the award to Brian Molloy of D15 Locksmiths, a family owned, family run business that boasts highly trained and skilled technicians with a wealth of experience.

Pat said:
“It was our pleasure to sponsor the ISIA Locksmith of the Year award again this year, it’s a great venue and we were impressed with the quality of the shortlisted companies. We’re delighted to have presented D15 Locksmiths with this award, and on behalf of Abloy UK I wish Brian and his team every success in the future.”

Sean Leavy, President of the ISIA, added:
“People are at the heart of security and recognising the contribution that they make is vital. Showcasing the individuals who have established successful careers in our industry and are flourishing, helps us to attract future candidates of a high calibre to our industry.”

IronmongeryDirect Survey sheds new light on Wellbeing of Tradespeople

Too much work, time pressures and unprepared customers – these are the top three causes of stress at work, according to a new survey of almost 600 tradespeople by IronmongeryDirect.

Work-related stress and mental illness now account for over half of all lost work days in the UK*. However, despite this, the survey found that only 11% of tradespeople have taken any time off work in the last year because of mental ill-health. With over a third (34%) reporting regularly feeling stressed, this research paints a worrying picture.

Almost half of the 587 respondents (43%) also believe there is still a stigma in the trades surrounding mental health, with respondents citing a ‘macho culture’, embarrassment, weakness and pressure to ‘get the job done’ as some of the contributing factors.

The survey also revealed some generational differences, with tradespeople aged 18 to 30 being 20% more likely to talk about their mental health at work than their peers in the 50 plus age group.

Despite the pressures of the day job, over half (56%) still feel that they have a good work/life balance, which is significantly higher than the national average of 33%** for all working people. The most commonly reported ways to relax when off the job include watching TV, walking the dog, and spending time with friends and family.

Commenting on the survey findings, Marco Verdonkschot, Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect, said:
“This survey has revealed an interesting insight into the physical and mental wellbeing of people working in the trades. Although great progress has been made across the sector when it comes to talking about workplace mental illness, it is clear that there is still a way to go and it’s vital that employers spot the signs of mental ill-health and create the right environment where staff feel they can speak up.
“It is very positive, however, to see that despite working in a demanding industry, many tradespeople still have a high level of job satisfaction and feel that their employer cares about their general wellbeing.”

IronmongeryDirect has over 18,000 products available and in stock. Orders can be placed as late as 8pm for next day delivery from Sunday through to Friday and by 4pm on Saturdays. Free, no quibble returns are available on all products.

Steel Door Manufacturer Surpasses Demanding Client Requirements

HBS Steel Doors and Fabrications Ltd, a manufacturer of robust steel doors, declares proudly it can go from site survey and design through to build and installation in just 3-4 weeks.

Bearing in mind that includes tailor-making the doors to the size, style, colour and other detailed specification required by the client, that’s a big promise. But as their clients have found, HBS delivers within that timescale – and even less when required.

For example, a housing association in Nottingham wanted 22 doorsets but only on the condition that the doors would be operational on site in just two weeks. HBS set up a project team run by operational personnel to work with core suppliers and to oversee the survey, design, manufacture and installation within the agreed schedule.

The client stated that HBS had surpassed even their demanding requirements.

In another challenging example, HBS met a Midlands based client’s requirements to design and engineer three, five metre high steel security communal doorsets provided that the old doors were replaced with the new ones on the same day in order to maintain the security and integrity of the entrances.

The client was so impressed by the impressive look of the installation on the available budget, that it is working with HBS Steel Doors to have new secure communal door entrances at several of its properties.

Since establishing in 2010, HBS Steel Doors, of Wigan, Lancashire, has amassed an extensive in-house capability and skill set ranging from project management and design technology through to manufacturing and installation to deliver a one-stop-shop.

Company Director, Nicki Woods said:
“We are a customer-led organisation committed to creating tailor-made designs to suit our clients’ needs. Our flexible approach is dedicated to diversity and innovation. We want to stand out in the marketplace and are prepared to invest heavily in our staff, processes and manufacture to help us expand into emerging markets and manufacture doors that meet most designs.

“We have built an excellent reputation in the social housing sector and are now building relationships in the construction industry to make new clients aware of our work ethic, quality workmanship and commitment to excellent customer service.”

HBS Steel Doors is a designer and manufacturer of high quality, custom-built, steel doorsets including robust security doors, communal entrance doors and doors for hospitals, schools and universities.

In response to client demand, HBS Steel Doors has expanded its product range to include storage hubs, cycle shelters, bin stores and utility boxes to meet the needs of local authorities and to deter crime like theft and vandalism.

It has a range of products accredited by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, which acts on behalf of the Police Service around the UK to recognise products that have the capability to deter and reduce crime.

SBD accreditation has been awarded to the company’s HBS001-100 and HBS001-200 steel security doorset ranges, which have been certified to PAS 24:2016 security performance to offer a level of security suitable for dwellings and other buildings exposed to comparable risk. HBS Steel Doors renewed its membership with SBD during November 2019.

Hazel Goss, Development Officer, Secured by Design, commented:
“It was a pleasure renewing contacts with HBS Steel Doors and Fabrications who have been valuable members since 2013, and I am looking forward to working alongside them for many more years to come.”

Based in Manchester, the client was looking for an aesthetically pleasing design which offered security, and replicated the design of the top floor. HBS Design team facilitated the process with the client architects and delivered the programme within four weeks.

Second image - Ormskirk Golf Club:
After several meetings with the club captain and the secretary a tailor-made design was agreed specifically for Ormskirk Golf Club. The captain was absolutely delighted with the outcome. Impressed by the delivery, customer service and design, the club have referred the services of HBS Steel Doors and Fabrications to others.

Hörmann UK Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Oldest Garage Door

The N80 902 style garage door on the original property

As Europe’s leading door manufacturer, Hörmann UK, celebrates its 40th anniversary, it is delighted to discover one of it’s up and over garage doors is still being used 39 years after installation.

Originally ordered in 1980 for a property in Edinburgh, the N80 902 style garage door continues to offer outstanding levels of durability and longevity, for which Hörmann is renowned for.

Owner of the property and self-employed architect, Rory Gibson, said:
“As an architect, I know that Hörmann UK is synonymous with quality and heritage, so it’s great to know that my own garage door has stood the test of time. Our garage door was on the original property when we bought it more than 20 years ago and it’s remarkable to see that almost four decades later, it still looks good and operates as well as the day it was installed.”.

“Over the years we have never required any maintenance or service to our door, and have only re-painted it as we updated the exterior of our home. As I now design property plans for customers, I have no reservations when it comes to recommending Hörmann UK’s range. I work very closely with Hörmann UK in a professional capacity because I want to offer my customers the best possible product, and so it is excellent to have first hand experience of their exceptional offering and customer service.”

The N80 902 style garage door reinstalled on the modernised property

The N80 902 style up-and-over garage door includes a multiple spring safety system so that if one spring were to break, other springs are robust enough to support the door. Further adding to the durability of the door, the door includes a lever arm so that the door pulls itself shut when closing. With softer closures the door is more likely to stand the test of time.

Area Sales Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Roy Shellam, commented:
“I have been working with Rory for a number of years, particularly when it comes to specifying garage doors for his customers. However, it was only recently that we discovered that Rory’s own property includes what may be one of the earliest Hörmann garage doors to be specified in the UK.
“We were pleased to hear that he has had a great experience with his N80 door, as it means that we can say proudly and with confidence that we can support our customers with quality products and service.”
