Year of Activity launched to Mark 30th Anniversary of Homebuilding & Renovating

Future plc, the international media group and leading magazine publisher, is marking the 30th anniversary of its iconic Homebuilding & Renovating brand with a new era of investment to launch a packed programme of activities and new events in 2020.

The campaign reinforces the continued growth of the renovation and self-build market, demonstrated by the record-breaking visitor numbers at the recent Homebuilding & Renovating Shows and increasing average project values, which have grown by over 10 per cent over the last quarter.

In addition to the publication of a special souvenir edition of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine in May 2020, four new Homebuilding & Renovating events will take place, supported by a suite of content via its online platform Homebuilding.co.uk. A special version of the Homebuilding & Renovating logo will appear on the cover of the magazine, website and on event signage throughout the year.

The brand’s 30th anniversary aligns with a full year of activity for the Homebuilding & Renovating Show, which kicked off this month (January) with an expanded South East Homebuilding & Renovating Show at Farnborough before moving onto the NEC Birmingham for the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show in March, which will host two new launches; the Homebuilding & Renovating Awards will honour the UK self-build industry, and the Custom Build Summit is a B2B event designed to help builders, developers and architects unlock growth in the fast-growing custom build market.

The Homebuilding & Renovating Awards' categories include: Best Window Supplier; Best Door Supplier; Best Builder's Merchant; Best Renewables Supplier; Best Roofing Supplier; Best Bricks Supplier; Best Insulation Supplier; Best Tradesperson; Best Heating & Plumbing Supplier etc.

A full list can be found here: www.futureevents.uk/hbrindustryawards/categories.

A third event launch will follow in September, when the Homebuilding & Renovating Roadshow debuts at Chester Racecourse. This exclusive, single-day event will bring the Homebuilding & Renovating Show concept to the North West of England for the first time and is designed to inspire a new audience to build their own home.

The London Homebuilding & Renovating Show in late September will play host to the fourth and final event launch of the year, when The Future Home Show will run alongside the main event at London ExCeL. Designed to help people navigate the exciting world of smart home tech, The Future Home Show will showcase the very best products on the market and help consumers integrate cutting-edge products into their homes during the design and build stage of self-builds, renovation projects or interior remodelling.

Paul Newman, brand director of Homebuilding & Renovating, says:
“Homebuilding & Renovating has been helping people create a home that perfectly meets their needs for three decades, and we fully intend to keep going not stand still.
“Making our 30th anniversary year one of investment, product development and evolution reinforces our reputation as a forward-looking brand and demonstrates we are as excited about the future as we are proud of the past.”

dormakaba Introduces Next Generation of Safe and Secure Emergency Escape Locks

dormakaba has launched the latest generation of its SVP self-locking emergency escape locks. The range is ideally suited for use on emergency exits and escape routes where doors requiring access control can be balanced with safety in an emergency.

The SVP range of locks offers a number of different options from mechanical locking with emergency escape function to locks that also feature electronic access control and optional microswitch monitoring functions.

The SVP locks ensure security with two-point locking - deadbolt and clawbolt latch - engaged automatically after closure. The emergency escape function means that the door can be opened at any time in the exit direction by simply operating the lever handle or panic bar.

The products are certified and CE marked in accordance with both EN 179 and EN 1125 standards for emergency exits, in addition they have been successfully type-tested for conformity to the requirements of EN 14846/EN 12209 and are Certifire approved for use on fire doors* (please refer to the Certifire certificate for details of the specific door type and locks approved.)

The SVP 6000 is ideal for external doors that must be secured to prevent unauthorised access into the building but also form part of the emergency escape route and therefore must provide free movement out of the building.

Access control is made simple by the electro-mechanical lock that uses a solenoid to operate the bolt. It also allows the option for the lock to fail-safe or fail-secure in the event of power loss. It also features microswitch monitoring of the latch, deadbolt, cylinder and lever handle, allowing remote verification that the door is secured and a record of authorised and attempted access.

The SVP 6000 also includes the option to set an ‘open mode’ where the outside handle is constantly engaged, allowing access without an electronic access key during certain times. This provides the option to have free access during the day and secure the building at night or outside of working hours.

The SVP 2000 Dorma Connected Work (DCW) offers the same access control, escape functionality and monitoring capabilities but with the addition of an electric motorised lock that allows remote unlocking via the integrated DCW Bus interface.

They can also be combined with automatic swing door operators such as dormakaba’s ED 100 and ED 250 to provide barrier free access in high traffic environments.

SVP locks are available in different models suitable for over-rebated or flush-closing timber/steel doors and also narrow stile doors. They are flexible in terms of their installation position thanks to the non-handed (universal) trip latch.

Archie Teagle, Product Marketing Manager at dormakaba said:
“Our highly adaptable SVP range of self-locking emergency escape locks has already been used in a wide range of applications. The release of the next generation of products provides improved functionality and greater versatility for building managers and end users.”
For more information on dormakaba’s range visit www.dormakaba.co.uk.

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) announce upcoming Fire Door Safety seminars

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced it will be hosting two free fire safety seminars in the coming months.

Taking place on 11th February and 17th March at DHF’s head office and training academy in Tamworth, the morning seminars will primarily appeal to those with responsibility for compliance, fire safety, asset management and procurement within local authorities and housing associations in the West Midlands area.  DHF plans to offer these seminars to those beyond the immediate region, later in the year.

The seminars, both of which start at 09:30am and include lunch, will comprise two presentations.  The first, delivered by DHF’s General Manager & Secretary Michael Skelding, is entitled: ‘Fire Safety, some comments on doors and hardware after Grenfell’, and focuses on the outcomes of the initial inquiry, in addition to how the doors and hardware performed.

This will be followed by a second presentation delivered by Gerda’s Head of Communications, Fiona Critchley, who is also the Chair of DHF’s Timber Doorset Group.

This will focus on the guidance document ‘A Guide for Selecting Flat Entrance Doorsets’ and will highlight the criteria to take into account when specifying a flat entrance doorset, in addition to building regulations and industry standards, referring to the most recent recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 Report Overview.

Widely considered as the ‘go to’ experts for technical advice, training and raising industry standards, and actively involved in the technical committees of the Industry Response Group, formed in response to Dame Judith Hackitt’s Report: ‘Building a Safer Future’, DHF is well placed to offer these seminars in collaboration with Gerda.

The federation also works on BSI Standards Committees, with compliance authorities HSE and Trading Standards as well as fire safety organisations in the UK and Europe.

“We are delighted to be offering these free half-day fire door safety seminars for local authorities and housing associations in the West Midlands,” said DHF’s Commercial Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“Uptake on both dates is already high, but DHF has every intention of rolling these out beyond the region as the year progresses.  Gerda, which is based in Suffolk, will also play host to the seminars later in the year, but in the meantime, we look forward to welcoming people to Tamworth, from the wider community.”

DHF represents all the key players in the following sectors: locks and building hardware, doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors and automated gates.

With the ultimate aim of maintaining and raising quality standards throughout the industry, all DHF members must meet minimum standards of competence and customer service. They all operate within a Code of Conduct governing standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety, business integrity and CE marking compliance.

Yale Door and Window Solutions offers Hardware Suite to meet FD60 as part of a Fire Doorset Specification

Committed to improving fire safety in residential, commercial and public buildings, Yale Door and Window Solutions has successfully tested a number of its products to meet the FD60 fire door specification.

Fire doors are one of the most fundamental elements of a building’s passive fire protection, acting as the first line of defence in a fire. They provide those vital minutes for occupants to evacuate the building safely.

The FD60 specification tests doorsets to withstand at least 60 minutes protection against fires. Yale’s AutoEngage multi-point door lock, KM TS007 1-star Cylinder, TS008 letterplate and TS007 2-star handle were collectively fitted and tested on a 54mm door with Lorient’s intumescent seal, passing the test requirements of BS 476-22:1987 and exceeding the FD60 time test by an additional 25%.

This doorset assembly now allows architects, specifiers and OEMs to be FD60-compliant, helping to defend buildings against the spread of fire.

When designing and developing this suite of hardware Yale worked closely with its sister company Lorient, utilising its indicative furnace to test product performance.

The furnace allows fire resistance properties of building materials to be tested in accordance with BS 476-22 (method of test for determination of the fire resistance of elements of construction) and EN 1363-1 (fire resistance test standard).

Brett Evans, Technical Director for Door Hardware at Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments:
“Here at Yale, we have a wide range of products that are designed to assist with fire doorset accreditation. Each product can make a critical difference, as without these seemingly small pieces of hardware, the effectiveness of a fire doorset can be significantly reduced.
“All of us at Yale are incredibly proud to have this suite of hardware far exceed the FD60 test, further reinforcing our responsibility to our fire door safety commitments.”

Paul Atkinson, Sales & Commercial Director for Yale, adds:
“Meeting FD60 in doorsets with so many of our products helps to reinforce the quality of our door hardware and is another example of our continued effort to provide customers with products they can trust.
“This certification is a recognised guarantee of product performance, letting our customers know that our products have been independently tested to ensure they conform to the required standards. For architects, specifiers and OEMs looking for a complete doorset solution, incorporation of this combination of Yale hardware provides assured security, safety and peace of mind.”

Diana, Princess of Wales’ Audi A4 Cabriolet being offered at Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show Sale

Classic Car Auctions are honoured to be offering the 1994 Audi A4 Cabriolet that was once the personal transport of Diana, Princess of Wales, a car she clearly enjoyed, regularly used and was photographed in.

The Princess was adored by the British public and for Audi this was a real coup, a member of the Royal Family driving a German car was unheard of.

For Audi this was a huge public relations opportunity, the most photographed Princess driving one of their cars, they couldn’t have wished for more. Audi later reported that sales had doubled once Diana was seen driving the car.

Diana used the car from March, when it was registered, until July when she gave it back to Dovercourt with just 4,000 miles on the clock. It wasn’t long before it was bought by political commentator, broadcaster and author Ian Campbell Dale who bought it on the spot once he knew of the car’s provenance. He promptly went on holiday in it.

After two years of ownership the car changed hands again, its next owner, a neighbour to Kensington Palace, owned it for the next 17 years. In 2013 the car was again sold and still with very low mileage, it has been in a couple of private collections since.

With 22,000 miles now on the clock and with the provenance that comes with the car, has been very well looked after. It is supplied with a good history file including the relevant manuals and handbooks.

For anyone wishing to bid for this car you have an opportunity to own a very high-profile car that was used to transport the young Princes, one being our future King, around during the summer of 1994.

At the time this was probably one of the most photographed cars and is now being offered for £35,000 to £40,000 and includes a selection of images of Diana using the car.

Simon Langsdale Classic Car Auctions Specialist commented:
“This is a stunning car, one that is remembered by many of us of a certain age at the height of the Princess popularity.”
Viewing takes place on the 27th March between 10am and 5.30pm with the auction getting underway on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th from 12pm.

Forthcoming Auctions

  • 28th and 29th March – Practical Classics Restoration Show, NEC Birmingham
  • 13th June – CCA Summer Classic Car Sale, Warwickshire Event Centre
  • 26th September – CCA Autumn Classic Car Sale, Warwickshire Event Centre
  • 12th December – CCA Winter Classic Car Sale, Warwickshire Event Centre

Day in the Life of Hörmann UK Staff Member: Katherine Howe

In this feature article we interview one of Hörmann UKs employees, Katherine Howe, their Marketing Coordinator, who works with the wider marketing team to manage internal and external communications, exhibitions and other projects.

How long have you worked with Hörmann?
I joined the Hörmann UK marketing team in 2017 as a Marketing Administrative Assistant.

What is your job at Hörmann?
My current position within the marketing department is Marketing Coordinator, where I work with the wider marketing team to manage internal and external communications, exhibitions, our website and other projects.

What training was required?
I have undertaken extensive product training to improve my understanding of Hörmann’s vast product offering. To further support this, I work closely with Hörmann’s marketing manager, David O’Mara, which results in a lot of on the job training.

What does a normal day look like?
The marketing department works across the entire business, which means we are responsible for media planning and event and exhibition organisation. We also work closely with our nationwide network of distributors to provide support, including updating websites and supplying dealer forum copy for in depth advice and information. The whole marketing team works across both the industrial and domestic sides of the business, so no day really is the same as there’s so many different products and project types.

What are the best and hardest parts of the job?
I enjoy being faced with challenges such as planning events, as it requires a lot of preparation and hard work throughout the duration of the show. However, event organisation does not come without unexpected hiccups, no matter how much preparation has gone into it, I need to be flexible to adapt to unforeseen changes. When faced with these setbacks, it’s even more rewarding to be able to present a solution quickly and efficiently.

Have you worked on any interesting projects?
In 2020, the marketing team will be focusing on improving Hörmann UK’s relationship with its dealer network. This will be facilitated through the launch of a new initiative, the Hörmann standard, along with our new online dealer locater. This year, I am working closely with the team in charge of delivering this, so I am looking forward to seeing this coming into fruition later on in the year.

What has been your proudest moment at Hörmann?
My proudest moment so far while working at Hörmann UK was the day I was promoted from Marketing Administrative Assistant to Marketing Coordinator.

Kubu launches dedicated Installer Site for Kubu Pro

Leading hardware manufacturer, Avantis, has launched a new dedicated installer website for its smart lock innovation, Kubu.

The new website gives installers access to everything they need to be a Kubu Pro and is live at www.pro-kubu-home.com.

Mark Bromley, CEO of Avantis, says:
“We’ve created the brand new Kubu Pro website to make it really easy for installers promote and demonstrate Kubu to potential customers.
“Via the website, installers can sign up to become a Kubu Pro and find a fabricator that is fitting Kubu Equipped Door Locks into their doors as standard.”

Once registered and signed up, Kubu Pro installers will get access to the Kubu Pro portal, which is an exclusive resource centre that contains a wealth of marketing material, including images, videos, brochures, leaflets and showroom displays.

The Kubu Pro portal has been designed to fully equip installers with everything they need to know about Kubu and get them set for smart technology.

Once homeowners have had their Kubu Equipped Doors fitted by installers, they can buy their Smart Kits directly from the Kubu website (www.pro-kubu-home.com) and set it up themselves, connecting to the Kubu App and Kubu Home Hub.

Smart Kits can also be added to Amazon Alexa and Google Home Hub, where homeowners can check on the lock status of their door. If homeowners leave their home with the door unlocked, the WiFi perimeter feature sends a notification to their phone via the app to let them know.
Mark adds: “We know how busy installers are and how competitive the market is. www.pro-kubu-home.com has been set up to make it easier for installers to win jobs quickly and differentiate themselves, thanks to the easy sign up and process and the extensive library of marketing support.”
To sign up to Kubu Pro today, visit www.pro-kubu-home.com.

Weru UK Network expands into South Wales

The best in quality meets the best in installation standards as Blackpool-based Weru UK consolidates its operations into South Wales with the addition of a new partner to their impressive nationwide network.

The strategic move sees industry veterans Graham Lindsay, Founder of Weru UK and Andy Clegg, Founder of glass and glazing training company, Fenestrology, sign up to a dual agreement which will further establish the Weru brand with a regional office and small showroom in Newcastle Emlyn.

Andy’s certified training expertise will help fast-track the UK role out of the Weru RAL accredited installer training programme. Andy will further develop the UKN training centre to ensure it can cater for UK demand in all aspects of sales service and installation.

Graham Lindsay of Weru UK with Andy Clegg
In conjunction with this, the move also enables Andy’s son, Arron Clegg, who won the FIT Show’s 2019 Master Fitter Challenge, to proudly represent the Weru brand within his own installation company, Master Fitter Windows, from the same base in Wales.

Arron Clegg of Master Fitter Windows comments:

“My expertise lies across the entire window industry; however, with many big nationals using fairly basic Pvcu windows, I am extremely excited to take on the challenge of learning new levels of installation expertise demanded by this top continental brand.

“The skill sets needed to install premium bespoke entrance doors or a 7.5metre wide panoramic patio door are completely different to what I’ve done before!”

Founder of Weru UK, Graham Lindsay explains:
“Having thirty plus years’ experience with Weru has enabled us to anglicise the range and develop the skills required to sell this niche high-tech brand.
“Whilst we have a highly skilled and loyal team based in the North West, our biggest hurdle is the recruitment of new partners and installers elsewhere in the UK.
“With Andy’s help, our installer recruitment process can now accelerate at pace, and in the short term they can also assist with project management and installation support.
“With the Leeds office up and running in 2019 and existing partners already established in Macclesfield, Derby, Burton and Bexhill, the new expansion into Wales will ensure Weru’s high level of UK customer demand can be catered to in all aspects of sales, service and installation.”

Housebuilders Handed New Front Door Perfection

New letterplates from ARRONE, the sister brand of HOPPE (UK), will allow housebuilders to achieve an exact colour match with a range of external door handles and matching items.

The AR708a letterplate has been cycle tested 50,000 times and includes a patent pending return spring to ensure a positive return action and prevent water egress. It is covered by HOPPE (UK)’s 10 year mechanical operation guarantee.

Designed to complement popular HOPPE external door handles such as Atlanta, Tokyo and Birmingham, the new ARRONE letter plate is available in five finishes including polished brass and silver, and powder coated anthracite grey, white and black.

Jonathan Walker, product manager at HOPPE (UK), said:
“The new AR708a letter plate has been added to the ARRONE range to make the specification process easier for external door hardware. HOPPE now offers an exact colour match for a complete range including letter plates, handles, door knockers, numerals and letters.
“No matter what handle is chosen, they can be confident that they will be able to get associated hardware in the same colours and finishes, and all from one place.”

The HOPPE range of door hardware is complemented by the ARRONE brand. ARRONE is recognised for offering affordable, high quality hardware for use within the commercial and residential door market.

Garador Launches New Series 4 Operators

Garamatic 20

Garador have now launched their much anticipated Series 4 generation of GaraMatic garage door operators. Leading the way, these designs incorporate new technology to provide a range of exciting advantages that fit well with modern living.

The new operators continue to offer key features such as a secure mechanical locking system built into the operator boom and automatic safety reversal, where uses force limitation to recognise when there is an obstruction in the door’s path.

The Series 4 GaraMatic 10 and GaraMatic 20 include an HCP interface to connect to Smart Home systems, such as Google’s Home Hub and Amazon Alexa, and an integrated Bluetooth receiver. The Bluetooth receiver can be turned on and off. An optional Bluetooth receiver is also available for the GaraMatic 9.

This new smart functionality is specifically designed to work with Garador’s new BlueSecur app, which has been designed for ios and android smartphones. The BlueSecur app enables homeowners to control open, close, partial opening and operator light functionality on their operator.

The new app is very easy to use as Garador’s Marketing Manager, Paul Eddleston comments “The quick and easy to use interface makes operating your garage door from your smartphone a breeze.”

Furthermore, push notifications become visible on your smartphone when the receivers on your operator come into range. One free user key is included with your operator and others are available to have additional smartphone users, via in-app purchases.

Garamatic 10

In addition to the new smart technology, the new Series 4 collection of operators includes enhanced technological and design specifications. The GaraMatic 9 has a sleek new black casing and matching matt-black 4 button hand transmitters.

The GaraMatic 10 and GaraMatic 20 have a modern and attractive aluminium and black plastic casing, with two complementary 4-button hand transmitters with chrome-effect end caps.

Energy efficient LED lighting further enhances the offering, with 10 LED lights for the GaraMatic 9 and 20 LED lights for the GaraMatic 10. Low power consumption of less than 1 watt helps to reduce energy use, which is an increasingly important consideration in an environmentally conscious society.

Garamatic 9

Garador’s Marketing Manager Paul Eddleston comments:
“The new operator designs are complemented by matching hand transmitters and new energy efficient lighting, but also retain important features such as bi-directional FM radio signals that utilise 128-bit encryption for security.”
In today’s rushed society, time is also important, and the new Series 4 ensures a closing speed of the garage door up to 40% faster than the previous Series 3 model.

This significant speed improvement means the GaraMatic 9 will open and close at a maximum speed of 20cm per second, whilst the GaraMatic 10 and 20 models will open and close at a maximum speed of 25cm per second.

Glamorous Aston Martins to launch Beaulieu’s 2020 Simply season

Simply Aston Martin will begin Beaulieu’s 2020 Simply season with a glamorous gathering of over 300 British sports cars on Sunday 5th April.

The event in the grounds of the National Motor Museum will return in the year of three Aston anniversaries; as 2020 marks 70 years of the successful DB2, 15 years of the revitalised V8 Vantage and 10 years of the four-door Rapide.

A special display area is being set aside for the high-performance V8 Vantage of 2005, which heralded a new era for the familiar model. Also welcome to join the display of enthusiasts’ cars is the formidable DB2 performance car that put Aston Martin on the map, as well as the Rapide which followed in the prestigious footsteps of the landmark Aston Martin Lagonda saloon of the 1970s and 1980s.

Always a favourite with fans, the unmissable Simply Aston Martin gathering is open to every age and variety of the marque. All are invited, from stunning showroom examples and sought-after modern classics to rare and iconic models from its prestigious past. Members of the Aston Martin Owners Club will also turn out in force.

Throughout the day, event-goers can vote for their favourite Aston Martin of the show in the People’s Choice Award, with the winner receiving a Beaulieu trophy.

Event-goers can head inside the National Motor Museum to see the 1922 Aston Martin 1.5-litre Strasbourg, one of just two built in the early days of the company to take part in the 1922 French Grand Prix.

Event tickets include entry to the whole of the Beaulieu attraction, including the National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Secret Army exhibition, the Montagu ancestral home of Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey and its grounds and gardens. Also open from March 15th is the adventurous new play area Little Beaulieu, for family fun all together.

For those driving Aston Martins into Beaulieu to take part in the show, participant tickets are £10.50 an adult and £5.25 a child (aged 5-16) if bought in advance online before 5pm on April 2nd, or £12.50 an adult and £6 a child if bought later or on arrival. All other visitors can buy a standard Beaulieu attraction ticket. For tickets and details see www.beaulieu.co.uk/events/simply-aston-martin.

Entry for rally participants is from 9am-2pm, with the Brabazon Restaurant open from 9am to serve hot drinks and breakfast snacks. All other visitors should enter through Beaulieu’s Visitor Reception building with a standard attraction admission ticket from 10am.

Simply Aston Martin is the first of Beaulieu’s Simply rallies for 2020, which includes brand new Simply Electric on May 24th, as well as Simply Audi on April 19th, Simply Ford on May 3rd, Simply Porsche on June 7th, Simply VW on June 20th, Simply Jaguar on June 28th, Simply Land Rover on July 12th, Simply Japanese on July 26th, Simply Mercedes on August 23rd and Simply Smart on Remembrance Sunday November 8th.

Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) to launch new safety seminar at FIT

Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that it will be launching a new safety seminar this year at the 2020 FIT Show at the NEC in May.

The free seminar is specifically aimed at those with responsibility for automated gates and industrial doors and will take the form of a two-hour session.

In addition, the pro-active federation has produced a free ‘owners guide’ entitled: Guidance for owners and managers of Industrial Doors, Garage Doors, Powered Gates and Traffic Barriers, which is based on DHF TS 011 and DHF TS 012, that attendees can take away with them following the talk.  The seminar will be open to both DHF members and non-members.

“DHF will be exhibiting as part of FIT’s education and training programme, and through our new seminar, we are hoping to inform and educate a wider audience on how to keep their products safe and compliant,” explains DHF’s Commercial Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“Both the seminar and owners guide will highlight the dangers of not taking maintenance seriously.  As we know, in the past, owners have been prosecuted because they have not maintained their product in a legal and appropriate manner.  With the seminar free and open to all, we are once again placing education at the heart of our activity.”

This year’s FIT show takes place from 12-14 May and continues to be the UK’s only dedicated event for the window, door, hardware, flat glass, and components market.  It attracts annual audiences of approximately 10,000, from fabricators and installers through to architects and specifiers, all of whom come to explore the latest equipment and software solutions and enjoy networking opportunities.

“FIT is a natural platform to attract local authorities to come along to the seminar and see what their responsibilities are with regards to their product,” concludes Patricia.  “We look forward to welcoming attendees to our seminar, and our stand.”
