Rhino Site Systems MD calls for Greater Awareness of Critical Door Maintenance Legislation

The managing director of one of the UK’s leading door installation and maintenance firms is calling for greater awareness of legislation enforcing the regular upkeep of personnel doors.

Paul Andrews, who leads Rhino Site Systems, has worked in operations and service management roles at global industrial manufacturers since 1992 and believes that businesses need to be made more aware of current regulations.

The regular maintenance of doors should be a top priority for businesses, to ensure their products are operating correctly and to avoid damage and costly repairs down the line.

Qualified engineers and specialist service providers understand the criticality of keeping a regular maintenance schedule for doors, but its importance needs to be more far-reaching.

By law, personnel doors on commercial premises need to adhere to multiple regulations to be considered fit for purpose.

These include Regulation 5 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (1992), Regulation 6 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998), and the Supply of Machinery Regulations (2008).

Paul Andrews, Managing Director of Rhino Site Systems said:
“Many of our customers do realise the importance of maintaining their personnel doors. But there is still a lack of knowledge surrounding the specific regulations in place and the serious implications for businesses that don’t adhere to them.
“Many of the doors we service and maintain are situated in sensitive, and often dangerous, sites for the purpose of protecting people and critical assets.
“We need industry-wide cooperation to ensure that businesses are informed of their obligations and that their products continue operating at the optimal level to avoid potential damage or injury”.
Rhino Site Systems offers comprehensive maintenance packages, as well as standalone services, for clients across a range of sectors.

Em-B is Winner of Winners at Grantley Hall

Architectural Ironmongery company Em-B Solutions and Architects Bowman Riley have scooped the top prize that this year’s Guild of Architectural Ironmongery / RIBA Specification Awards, named Winner of Winners for their work at the Relais & Châteaux Grantley Hall Hotel in North Yorkshire.

The biennial Specification awards recognise design excellence in architectural ironmongery specification projects and are awarded to the whole specification team of architect and architectural ironmonger, highlighting the importance of the partnership between these two professional disciplines.

Grantley Hall’s ironmongery specification was praised by the award’s judges as “a joy” and “a pleasure to judge,” commenting not only on the quality of the hardware but the huge attention to detail, thoroughness, and technical accuracy of the door hardware scheme. The teams from Em-B and Bowman Riley were presented with the Winner of Winner prize at a ceremony at the top of London’s iconic Cheese Grater building.

Em-B worked closely with all the architectural team at Bowman Riley on the refurbishment and new build elements of the Grantley Hall project. In the old buildings, Em-B worked hard to retain existing hardware where possible, mindful of the need to upgrade to fire door standards where applicable. New ironmongery was carefully matched to the old to provide a consistent design approach throughout. This was then fully integrated into the buildings’ access control and security systems for a seamless customer experience throughout the whole complex.

Testimony to the quality of Em-B’s work at Grantley Hall is how delighted the client is with the hardware scheme which has been working beautifully since the newly refurbished hotel reopened in 2021.
“We are delighted to hear that the hard work of Andy Fitzgerald and the rest of the Em-B team has been recognised with this award,” says Anne Harrison at Grantley Hall.
“Quite simply Em-B was a superb partner throughout this project and without the passion and expertise of the ironmonger, this project would simply not have been possible. Once the architect had chosen the handle suite in antique brass, Em-B went through every single item of door and window hardware to get the details right. Every single closer, hinge, escutcheon was scrutinised for aesthetics and functionality and that passion and attention to detail was vital to the success of the scheme.”

Em-B is a thriving, well-established architectural ironmonger and supplier of door solutions based in Leeds established in 1966. The company regularly wins awards for its architectural ironmongery schemes on some of the UK’s most prestigious projects, working for household name architects and clients. Em-B’s success is built on working as a true partner within the construction process from drawing board to installed product and beyond.

Jubilate! Car & Classic auctions “One previous Lady owner” Buckingham Palace 1993 Rover 827 Sterling

Leading online classic and niche car auction site Car & Classic starts the Platinum Jubilee 2022 celebrations in style, with a Rover 800 Mk2 with unshakable royal connections.

Supplied new to Buckingham Palace, and with paperwork noticeably reticent about its recipient (other vehicles sold to the Royal estate mention the details of the intended user, but those destined for the Queen usually did not), the Sterling was then sold on to its second owner as a “one previous lady owner” car.

History, always important when it comes to classic vehicles, is even more poignant in the case of this 827, supplied new by Royally-approved dealer Thomas Day Motors of Fleet.

Extensive paperwork, handbooks, manuals, magazine features and invoices help build the fabric of the car’s background.

Original, virtually undamaged leather and wood triumph in the Rover’s interior, which still has the factory mats further protected by another set; a boot liner, spare wheel and original factory tools, as well as the factory CD multichanger, all feature proudly.

Of course, the Rover shines in its British Racing Green colour, and glasswork, door surrounds and rubbers, alloy wheels and fittings are all in ‘regal’ condition. The 2.7 V6 Rover engine, transmission and brakes have received due care and attention over the years, and the car has been in temperature-controlled storage.

As it is deserving of such a car, it starred in the ‘100 Years of Cowley’ parade.
“Even if there was no Royal connection at all, the original, excellent overall condition of this Rover would be of interest to the classic car connoisseur,” says Car & Classic Head of Editorial Chris Pollitt.
“British modern classics of the ‘90s are, in general, enjoying a deserved renaissance, but this particular 1993 Rover Sterling strikes a special note within the current Jubilee celebrations, and would be the ultimate anniversary gift to one’s collection.”

Car & Classic is supporting Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations with a unique exhibition showing the best of British innovation, by supplying some of the vehicles representing each year of the Queen’s reign from 1952 to 2022: seven decades of motoring history.

Donations from this event will support the Prince Philip Trust Fund which makes a real difference to the quality of life of people from communities across the extensive area of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, focusing particularly on giving support towards disability, health, the elderly, families, children and young people, those in social need and the arts.

You can find the latest car auctions on www.carandclassic.co.uk/auctions where the team specialises in enthusiast-owned cars, from the latest modern classics to pre-war and veteran classics, barn finds and concours-winning examples.

Lyn Poole, Development Officer at Secured by Design commented:
“I have had great pleasure in working with the team at Commtel to get them to the point of becoming Secured by Design members and achieving Police Preferred Specification on their products. I have been familiar with their products for many years when I was a Designing Out Crime Officer in the Metropolitan Police, and working with them now, I can see their true commitment to security and to implementing the changes needed to get them to this stage. They have always strived to deliver, and they definitely have this time”.

With over one million homes built to SBD standards, and witnessing reductions in crime of up to 87%, SBD plays a hugely significant role in the planning process, continuing with their aim to design out crime by good design.

Aperio® wireless locks help Scottish university achieve its sustainability goals

As the home of the renowned St Andrews Prize for the Environment, the University of St Andrews has sustainability at the heart of its ethos. For student accommodation, university managers sought an energy-efficient access control solution which respected and reflected these principles.

A major challenge facing the university was that multiple different standalone access control technologies had been installed piecemeal at student halls over the years. To upgrade the accommodation, university managers sought a more suitable, integrated solution.

They university chose Aperio® battery powered electronic escutcheons from ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions. Approximately 1,600 doors so far are equipped with electronic access control — without cabling.

The Aperio® devices integrate fully and work flexibly with both the university’s existing central system and their student ID card. University security managers continue to enjoy the efficiency benefits of monitoring and controlling access from a single point and in real time, including for doors in multiple buildings.

Security and energy efficiency

In comparison to a wired access control solution, Aperio® devices offer significant energy efficiency benefits. Escutcheons are wireless, so can be installed with little energy use and no need for wiring to mains electricity. They consume zero energy when idle and run on standard batteries, consuming little power during operation.

Maintenance involves a change of battery every two years (approx.); nothing more. Through its entire life-cycle, Aperio® combines energy efficiency with cost effectiveness: Energy cost savings during operation are estimated to be around 70% lower than for comparable wired locking*. In doing so, Aperio® contributes to the university’s sustainability goals.

Aperio® locks’ online integration with St Andrews’ central management system has improved access for all building users. “Aperio® interfaces with our central access control system, which gives us central management and control,” says Pauline Brown, Associate Chief Information Officer at University of St Andrews. “We get 24/7 monitoring and reporting when required.”

Student ID is also combined with the room entry credential, which saves issuing two cards. Staff and maintenance teams can have access rights issued or changed with a couple of clicks in the system. The whole experience is streamlined.

The Aperio® advantage

Battery powered Aperio® cylinders, escutcheons, handles and locks can be fitted as a new access control system or extend an existing installation by linking new doors to the same system wirelessly. There’s no need for staff to change their credentials, nor for anyone to carry more than one card or fob.

Aperio® is built to work seamlessly within almost every building system, from over 100 different manufacturers and counting. One control panel manages everything.

Installation is quick, because there’s no cabling around the door, no invasive building work, and no need to change door hardware. Aperio® devices fit almost any opening or security level, wood, glass or aluminium doors, from fire and escape doors to meeting rooms, labs and offices.

For further information on products and services available from Abloy UK, such as the Aperio® solution, visit this link, call 01902 364 500, or email info@abloy.co.uk.

Schüco launches new and improved AS FD bi-fold door system

Schüco is proud to announce the launch of its new AS FD bi-fold door system. It delivers the largest maximum leaf size on the market, slim profiles and simplified fabrication and installation. The AS FD 75 will launch in May 2022 and the AS FD 90.HI will be available from September.

The doors provide the company’s slimmest bi-fold sightlines yet at 90mm. A maximum leaf width of 1500m and height of 3500mm offer customers greater views with minimal obstruction, while the option of a new 3-point handle operated lock provides more familiar operation.

Installation is made easier with an 8mm +/- adjustment profile and integrated rebate profiles reduce the production time compared to previous models. Integrated profiles and a reinforced outer frame profile reduce assembly and replacement time.

The new AS FD range features improved performance qualities compared to previous Schüco bi-fold doors. Increased airtightness enables the AS FD 75/90.HI to achieve U-values as low as 1.0, ensuring compliance with the new Part L building regulations. New locking options and four drainage levels in two gasket profiles make the doors more watertight. They also run quietly thanks to a new roller carriage and solid tracks.

Moreover, the AS FD 75/90.HI are adaptable, stable and reliable thanks to adjustment profiles, a guide carrier with greater tolerance and strengthened outer frame profiles.

All the necessary software for CNC machining is in place and the system is already available on SchüCal and LogiKal for Schüco partners.

In September 2022, Schüco will be rolling out the new AS FD bi-fold doors in more opening configurations with additional barrier-free threshold options, giving customers the ability to customise the door opening to meet their needs.

Steve Nichols’ N1Aa Gets The Green Light For Production

After several years of intensive development and thousands of miles of testing on road and track, the decision has been made to start low volume production of the NICHOLS N1A.

The brainchild of former McLaren Chief Designer Steve Nichols who led the technical team responsible for the McLaren MP4/4, the most successful F1 car of all time, the NICHOLS N1A is a celebration of his close ties with the Woking company, being a modern interpretation of the very first McLaren, the M1A.

“We didn’t set out with the intention of going into production,” says Nichols. “It was an idea that John Minett, Nichols Cars’ CEO, and I had been talking about for a while. In the end we thought we might as well build one and see how it turned out.
“Once people saw it on the road, the response was incredible. It’s a bit like the original M1A that started the whole McLaren story. Bruce McLaren built it as a one-off for his own personal use. Then people starting asking him if he could produce a few more!”

Although obviously inspired by the M1A, the NICHOLS is a very different, thoroughly modern, proposition.

Visually it is much more aggressive, with a ground-hugging nose, wide, powerful flanks and aerodynamics honed in the wind tunnel to produce positive, balanced, downforce front and rear. The result is a fitting tribute to the M1A but at the same time a shape which is thoroughly contemporary.

As is the technology under the skin. The NICHOLS features a state-of-the-art aluminium and carbon fibre chassis with wishbone suspension all around, guaranteeing fabulous handling.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of the project,” says Nichols, “has been the opportunity to work with some incredible world-leading experts on structures and suspension, based here in the UK, as well as some fantastic colleagues from my McLaren days.”
An obvious feature the N1A shares with the original is a large capacity American V8. With a choice of power outputs ranging from 450 to 650 bhp and a target weight including fluids of under 900 kilos, performance is guaranteed to be spectacular.

Whilst it’s probably best to use a racetrack to unleash its full potential, the NICHOLS N1A has been designed with road use very much in mind, weather permitting!

The car will make its debut in the second quarter of 2022.

Warning As Three Quarters Of Fire Doors Fail Inspections

One of the UK’s leading fire door inspection organisations has warned of a “tragedy waiting to happen” after it revealed three quarters of the fire doors inspected in the UK by its approved inspectors did not meet the required standard.

The Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS)’s data, based on more than 100,000 fire door inspections carried out by its approved inspectors in 2021, found that 75% of fire doors failed to meet the required standards, putting lives at risk in the event of a fire.

Alarmingly, buildings that had the highest number of fire door inspection failures included healthcare buildings, local authorities and housing associations, and private housing. Given that these buildings’ fire doors are subject to higher use and traffic than other building types, regular inspection and maintenance is key to ensuring they remain fit for purpose throughout their lifespan.

Louise Halton, FDIS Scheme Manager, said:
“With the vast majority of fire doors in the UK failing inspections, it’s sad to say that a tragedy is simply waiting to happen, especially so in buildings that are home to vulnerable residents. But this situation is entirely preventable and, at this stage, still reversible. A fit for purpose fire door can save lives, so now is the time for all of those responsible for fire safety to urgently inspect fire doors in their buildings and act immediately if faults are identified.
“It’s crucial that reputable and trained fire door inspectors, such as those approved by the FDIS, carry out fire door inspections. However, the ongoing reporting of maintenance issues with fire doors is a role for us all – every building user should play a proactive role in reporting any faults to ensure they are quickly addressed so that the building’s safety is maintained.”
The most common reasons for inspection failure - which can be a result of one or multiple issues - were excessive gaps between the door and the frame (77%), care and maintenance issues (54%), and issues over smoke sealing (37%). In almost a third (31%) of cases, inspections failed due to improper installation – meaning those doors were never fit to perform the task of holding back fire and smoke.

The inspection data also revealed inspectors’ top three fire safety concerns as a lack of fire door maintenance, and poor knowledge of fire safety responsibilities and a limited understanding of the role fire doors play in keeping people safe by those responsible for building fire safety.

Louise Halton adds, “The issues surrounding the understanding and knowledge of those responsible for fire safety was also highlighted in the FDIS’ inspection data released in 2020 as a key concern. This clearly demonstrates the need for individuals throughout the building safety sector to have access to quality training, assessment and examination to ensure their knowledge is up to date, and that they understand the fundamental role of a fire door - which is only fit for purpose if it is maintained correctly and inspected regularly.”

The positive news is that there is a will to improve. Since the introduction of the Building Safety Bill (now the Building Safety Act 2022), 77% of FDIS inspectors have seen an increase in demand for fire door inspections. This indicates the importance and effect of the legislation in encouraging building owners and fire safety professionals to take a more proactive approach to fire door safety and maintenance.

The FDIS certified inspectors are uniquely trained to undertake fire door inspections and improve building fire safety. All approved inspectors have completed the FDIS certificated inspector training and onsite assessment, which provides an understanding of fire doors and their components, including testing and certification, regulations and standards, inspection, and maintenance.

Europe's largest door manufacturer, Hörmann UK, renew SBD membership

Hörmann UK has recently renewed their membership with Secured by Design (SBD), achieving Police Preferred Specification on their ‘Hörmann ThermoPro Steel Entrance Single Leaf Doorset Range’, alongside several of their garage doors and vehicular roller shutter doors.

Secured by Design (SBD) is the official police security initiative that works to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings with the aim to reduce crime through good design. SBD is the only way to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK.

SBD plays an undeniable role in crime prevention, as seen within their product-based accreditation scheme, Police Preferred Specification (PPS). PPS successfully provides a recognised standard for all security-related products that can be used to both deter and reduce crime. Products are subjected to vigorous testing and auditing by an accredited third-party organisation before being allowed to carry the SBD logo.

Based in Coalville, Leicestershire, Hörmann UK is part of the Hörmann Group, a family-owned business that manufactures and supplies a wide range of high-quality, security-conscious doors and perimeter protection systems for both commercial and private real estate.

Founded in 1935, the Hörmann Group are a global operation and is Europe’s largest door manufacturer, having delivered more than twenty million garage doors to customers worldwide. Alongside being the market leader in domestic garage and entrance doors, Hörmann also supplies industry-leading industrial doors and an extensive range of loading bay technology.

As a fourth-generation family-owned and run business, the Hörmann Group have always taken their social and environmental responsibility seriously. The objective of successive generations of the family has been to hand over a financially, ethically sound business that provides a green platform in sustainable manufacturing for future generations to come.

With over one million homes built to SBD standards, and witnessing reductions in crime of up to 87%, SBD plays a hugely significant role in the planning process, continuing with their aim to design out crime by good design.

Doug Skins, Development Officer at Secured by Design added:
“Hörmann UK have an impressive range of high-quality security products, we are delighted to continue working alongside them for many more years to come”.
Secured by Design was established over 30 years ago and works with many partner organisations ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, right through to local authorities, housing associations, architects, developers and manufacturers. SBD also maintains close links with standards authorities and certification bodies to ensure it remains up to date with emerging criminal trends.

There are currently many hundreds of SBD member companies producing thousands of attack resistant crime prevention products across 30 different crime categories.
