ZEROplus Urge the Fitting of Fire Door Selectors

With the recent new fire safety regulations coming into force earlier this year, ZEROplus are shedding the spotlight on the importance of having correctly fitted door selectors on double fire doors.

Mark Lockley, Managing Director of ZEROplus, says:

“The importance of fire doors simply can’t be overstated. Fire doors save lives. But to be effective, fire doors must remain closed and be closed when the fire breaks out.

“Along with door closers, pairs of fire doors with flush (with a latch bolt), rebated meeting stiles, or with an astragal fitted, need a correctly fitted door selector.

“Also referred to as a fire door coordinator, a door selector ensures doors always close in the correct sequence.

“Without an effective door selector, self-closing, double fire doors have the potential to form a dangerous overlap and be rendered useless.”

Below is a pair of double fire doors with an astragal Mark spotted recently, demonstrating the dangerous overlap resulting from not having a fire door coordinator fitted.

Door selectors are fitted to the top of double fire doors and make sure that the self-closing doors close correctly.

It ensures the second door remains held open until the other door has properly closed, guaranteeing the correct closing sequence.

Mark explains:

“The Z304 CE fire door coordinator features a surface rebate catch with patented ‘toggle’.

“This means that if the second opening leaf is forced open first, the toggle ensures the first opening leaf is carried far enough open by the rebate catch to allow the adjuster arm to drop and ensure the correct closing sequence.

“But the whole product, including the rebate catch, must be fitted. Along with double, self-closing fire doors without door selectors, we sometimes see the incorrect fitting of door selectors, which is such a shame.”

The Z304 CE fire door coordinator from ZEROplus is fully tested to BS EN 1158:1997, CE and UKCA marked.

The Z304 is suitable for timber and steel fire doors, is British made and tested to 1,000,000 cycles to stand the test of time.

Available in various finishes and adjuster arm lengths, the Z304 fire door coordinator will ensure the correct closing sequence of your fire doors and keep your buildings safe and compliant.
