Manufactured in the heartland of the British lock and key industry, masterkey systems from UNION, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY, are helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
ASSA ABLOY’s factory, based in Willenhall has been undergoing a lean manufacturing programme, as well as implementing plans to reduce its carbon footprint. The production of UNION’s two leading masterkey systems - keyRETRO™ and keyULTRA™ at its UK site, not only helps to reduce the environmental impact of overseas importing, but also ensures high quality and strict security standards are maintained.
Commenting on the importance of UK manufacturing, Tina Hughan, Head of Marketing for ASSA ABLOY UK, said: “We’re very proud that our leading masterkey suites are produced at our Portobello site, and their wide use throughout various industry sectors is testament to their quality and heritage.
“Our factory is a genuine asset, not just because of its historical significance but because of the importance of British manufacturing, especially in the current challenging financial climate. Not only does it stimulate the local economy and ensure unique trade skills are not lost, it also stands for quality, whilst helping to reduce our carbon footprint and improving supply chain efficiency.
“In the past we have received awards, such as the National and Midlands Awards for Innovative Working Practices at the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards and the Manufacturer of the Year accolade at the Black Country Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards. Plus, we are currently one of the only security product companies to operate a lean manufacturing programme, proving UK production is both innovative and sustainable.”
Amongst the products produced at the West Midlands site, is the keyRETRO™ masterkey system, which allows existing traditional UNION systems to be extended as security requirements change, and eliminates the need to install a new system as buildings are redeveloped.
Plus, the 16-year patent protection on key and cylinder assembly, combined with personnel restrictions for key cutting, greatly reduces the risk of a system becoming compromised.
Also manufactured in the UK, the 6pin masterkey system, keyULTRA™, has received the highest grades for key related security and attack resistance in relation to BS EN 1303:2005 when used in conjunction with a security escutcheon – reaching security grade 6 and attack grade 2.
keyULTRA™’s extended patent, lasting till 2028, based on its DuraPIN™ technology, prevents the unauthorised copying of keys on the high street, whilst its durability, provided by self lubricating materials, means it has been successfully tested to 500,000 cycles.
UNION Architectural Hardware supplies an extensive range of locks and architectural hardware used in many applications through professional locksmiths and ironmongers. UNION is part of ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions.
