How a Door Becomes a Fire Door: A Technical Guide

Working fire doors are a prerequisite for fire safety, but what differentiates them from regular doors? Kirk Smith of Allegion UK outlines the technical features that form fire-rated doors as we know them.

Research indicates there may be around 42 billion doors found throughout the world’s built environment. Every day, each of those doors plays a purposeful role towards the accessibility, safety and security of buildings and their occupants - but how many people truly recognise what they are using?

Doorsets are assembled in a variety of configurations and sizes, but more often than not, they are used without a second thought. Yet, there are stark differences between regular door and fire door classifications, and where fire safety is concerned, it’s critical for users and responsible persons alike to be able to differentiate between the two.

Despite their similar appearance, regular doors serve as interior and exterior access points only and are usually thinner at 35mm, while fire doors aim to protect buildings and their occupants in the event of a fire and are either 44mm or 54mm thick depending on its fire rating. As a key element in a building’s passive fire protection system, fire doors and their hardware components are often the first line of defence against fire, and as such, require detailed engineering and testing. Kirk Smith of Allegion UK explains:

“From components and construction to features and function, there are several clear distinctions between regular doors and fire doors. Whereas regular doors are often placed throughout a building on accessibility or aesthetic merit, fire doors are strategically positioned to compartmentalise areas of the structure - such as hallways and stairwells - and are designed to help direct occupants through safe escape routes whilst also providing them with valuable time to make their way out of the building.

“When opened, fire doors provide a means of escape. When closed, they form a barrier to stop the spread of fire and smoke. To be able to do this, the main panel of the door (also known as the door leaf) is constructed from fire-resistant materials that help to prevent the door from warping or collapsing when exposed to high temperatures. Conversely, regular doors without these materials are highly vulnerable. Nonetheless, for a fire door to become effective, it must comprise more than just the leaf, and will include:
  • The frame

  • Intumescent fire - and if required for certification - smoke seals

  • Glazing (although this is not necessary)

  • Signage

  • Door hardware, such as hinges, door closers, locks and latches

“Fire doors must work in tandem with each of these components, so they do not compromise the integrity of the doorset. Intumescent fire and smoke seals, for example, frame the edges of the fire door and are chemically designed to expand into the frame when exposed to temperatures beyond 200°C. In doing so, the seals close the gaps between the frame and the door itself, eliminating any possibility of fire - and if required, smoke - from passing through. Intumescent seals, along with clear ‘Fire Door Keep Shut’ signage - usually found towards the top edge of the door leaf - are some of the most unmistakable visual marks found on a fire door.

“From an operational viewpoint, fire doors work differently than regular doors too. Fire door hardware is indispensable to fully operational doorsets, where during a fire incident, an open door is rendered useless. To be able to form an effective barrier against fire, a door must close to completion from its open position, and as part of this process, it will call upon its hinges, locks, latches and door-closing devices. Door closers, whether concealed or surface-mounted, use spring-loaded hydraulics to effectively close and engage the door into its latch, where it is held firmly in place by the frame, whereas regular doors rely on manual control.

“For buildings with high footfall, an electromagnetic hold-open device may be present on a doorset. These systems are permitted to keep certain fire doors open until a fire alarm is activated, aiding ease of movement until the first sign of a fire incident, in which the system will automatically release and close the doors to completion. Equally, panic and emergency exit devices can be found on some fire doors that are positioned throughout a building’s escape routes. All exit devices are meant to be operated with minimum effort to help users successfully escape through the doorway, meaning reliability is key every step of the way.”

Testing and standards

To certify fire performance, the complete fire doorset is put through periods of standardised destructive testing in accredited laboratories and workshops. The standard fire performance test method complies with BS EN 1634-1, and in conjunction with product standard BS EN 16034, it provides the supply chain with manufacturing guidelines, and as a result, gives responsible persons and end users peace of mind that their doorset will function in a fire scenario. Kirk Smith continues:

“Fire doors are a legal requirement in all non-domestic properties and houses of multiple occupancy and with updated fire safety regulations now in effect, third-party testing and product traceability is as crucial as ever. Upon testing, certified fire doors are given a fire-resistance rating which details the length of time the door and its hardware components can withstand fire and smoke, with the most common FD ratings being FD30 and FD60, which declare the doorset can withstand fire for 30 or 60 minutes respectively, and FD30S and FD60S if the doors have been tested with smoke control. A regular door with no fire-resistance characteristics would not be able to withstand these tests and as such, would fail in a real-life event.

“What’s more, fire resistance tests are conducted on representative samples, and as such, components should not be substituted post-specification and installation. Fire door hardware for example, in addition to rigorous fire safety testing, must go through stages of performance testing to ensure they function properly and can sustain a level of durability that makes them fit for purpose. Mechanical door closers must be tested to the appropriate British Standard EN 1154, which classifies hardware over its category of use, number of test cycles, power size, fire behaviour, safety and corrosion resistance. Equally, emergency exit devices and panic exit devices are tested to BS EN 179 and BS EN 1125 respectively and electromagnetic hold-open devices to BS EN 1155. A fire door’s hinges must also be tested to BS EN 1935.

“For traceability purposes, end-users can review the UKCA and CE marks on a fire door and its hardware to find its fire rating, certificate numbers and the manufacturer’s details. Furthermore, for those looking to find additional information on a doorset’s components, the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) can be referred to for clear, accurate and up-to-date product information - helping people to review and select trusted hardware that conforms to UKCA and CE certifications.”

Indian Motorcycle to exhibit at Rétromobile

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, has announced it will exhibit at this year’s Rétromobile as the event reserves exhibition space for exceptional motorcycles for the first time in its 48th edition at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from January 31 to February 4, 2024.

Rétromobile is the annual meeting place for vehicle enthusiasts and collectors and among the highlights that will punctuate this edition, the great news of the 2024 vintage is that Rétromobile will offer lovers of two wheels the opportunity to discover an area specially dedicated to collector’s motorcycles.

A perfect fit for Indian Motorcycle which has so much to tell about its history, its legendary models and its competition victories.

The Rétromobile show has always welcomed motorcycle manufacturers, dealers specialising in collector’s motorcycles, auctions and exhibitions bringing together some of the most beautiful machines of the 20th century.

But in a first for the event, no less than 2,000 m2 will be exclusively devoted to two wheels, bringing together manufacturers and accessories manufacturers in hall 2.2, the heart of the show near the Artcurial stand, and will be centred around a unique motorcycle exhibition.

Romain Grabowski, Director of Rétromobile says:

“The team at Rétromobile all love collector’s vehicles, and that of course includes motorcycles which have also marked the history of locomotion.

“This passion is shared by at least 29% of our visitors who already own collectable motorcycles.

“The retrospective during our 47th edition dedicated to the centenary of the historic French motorcycle brand Dollar, widely acclaimed in 2023, convinced us to bring together two-wheel players within the same area and give them pride of place for future editions.

“As for the other aisles of the show, the two watchwords will be passion and conviviality.”

An exceptional brand for a historic first

When Romain Grabowski proposed participation to Indian Motorcycle, the response was immediately positive. Indeed, founded in 1901, Indian Motorcycle is America’s first motorcycle company. It has captured the hearts of bikers around the world and distinguished itself as one of America’s most legendary and iconic brands.

Indian Motorcycle’s heritage and passion for motorcycles have been revived in the modern era under new management and has reestablished a significant place among premium brands.

A little history…

In 1897, George Hendee founded a bicycle manufacturing company called “Hendee Manufacturing Company.” One of the bikes bore the name “American Indian,” shortened to “Indian” which became Hendee’s main brand: a legend was born.

To spice up bicycle racing, George Hendee joined forces with Oscar Hedstrom to build motorised bicycles. The first “Indian” was born.

Together they created the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company. 1901, the birth of Indian Motorcycle. A year later, the first Indian Motorcycle model was sold to the public.

What followed was a world speed record, the creation of the first American-produced V-twin engine, Indian Motorcycle equips the New York police, export of the brand to England, the first commitment to Tourist Trophy, then the first successes in competition.

Indian Motorcycle riders break all the speed and distance records in the United States. Indian Motorcycle sweeps the podium at the Isle of Man in the first running on the Mountain course.

Indian Motorcycle can boast many technical innovations. Offering rear suspension in 1913 and the first motorcycle to be equipped with headlights and a starter in the following year.

Various lives followed for the company until the takeover of the brand by Polaris in 2013. That year, a new era began with the launch of the Thunderstroke 111 engine.

And, for more than 10 years, this premium brand has been delighting more and more bikers who enjoy living their passion for motorcycling on the handlebars of an Indian Motorcycle.

Meet at Rétromobile

It is at the heart of this Rétromobile space, dedicated to motorcycles, that Indian Motorcycle will tell its story by presenting some of its emblematic models.

A classic versions and a modern versions will be exhibited in mirror pairs allow visitors to discover and understand the entire heritage of Indian Motorcycle.

It is a passionate and great collector of the brand, Guy Baster who, by exhibiting some rare models from his museum (located in Riom in 63), allows this fantastic display.

You will discover the following four classic /modern duos:

  • A classc boardtracker and an FTR Carbon
  • A classic Chief and its reimagined modern version
  • A classic Scout and the current Scout, the brand’s best-seller
  • A classic 4-cylinder and the modern Pursuit

DHF warns of ‘12 months to go’ for CSCS cards!

Tamworth-based trade association, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), has sounded the ‘clarion call’ with CSCS cards awarded by 'Grandfather Rights' set to expire on 31st December 2024.

It is predicted that up to 60,000 industry skills cards will terminate at that point and cannot be renewed. In preparation, the renewal of new CSCS cards under ‘Grandfather Rights’ will cease on 30th June this year.

DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens explains:
“Most people in construction are familiar with the CSCS card, which can be issued either physically or digitally. Although CSCS cards are not a legislative requirement, it is a requirement under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) for contractors to ensure any individual they employ or appoint to work on a construction site has the necessary skills, knowledge, training and experience.
“CSCS cards are supported by the government and are required by most principal contractors and major house builders in order for construction workers to access their sites. They provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job that they are doing,” she continues.

The federation launched its government approved CSCS card partner scheme in collaboration with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) at the end of 2019, and offers various cards for those who work with industrial doors, domestic garage doors, automated gates & traffic barriers and metal or timber doors.

As part of this scheme some cards require you to have attended and passed a DHF approved training course. DHF and ADSA also formed the ESA - https://www.esa.uk.com/ - to offer specialised NVQ's in the field of automated gates, industrial doors, dock leveller, loading bay equipment and powered pedestrian doors.
“DHF supports the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Alliance, and in so doing, reiterated its firm support for the continued demonstration of competence across the construction industry,” continues Patricia. “The CSCS Alliance is an organisation comprising 38 different organisations representing not just the traditional construction trades but the many specialist occupations across the built environment.”
Building Safety and competence are two of the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) priorities. The CLC Industrial Strategy states that only qualifications can provide a consistent means of proving an individual’s skills. Therefore, they require everyone working in construction related occupations to obtain a recognised qualification.

CSCS is committed to playing its part in delivering a fully trained and qualified workforce. Therefore, the removal of cards issued under IA will assist in meeting industry requirements.
“DHF continues to encourage its members and the industry to prepare for the changes ahead,” concludes Patricia. “If you don’t have the required qualification, you’ll need to register before your card expires in 2024. For more information on CSCS cards visit: https://bit.ly/347ZTbD

Coastal Group celebrates 20 years of excellence

Pictured, left to right: Bradley Jenner, Loren Jenner, Anthony Jenner, Brooklyn Jenner, Wayne Jenner

Coastal Group is celebrating 20 successful years of manufacturing and supplying door and window hardware throughout the UK and beyond.

Company founder Anthony Jenner marks the milestone and looks back at how it all started.
“I left school with no qualifications, starting my working life as a carpenter and joiner,” explains Anthony. “I used to jump on the tube every day to the Ritz and Carnarvon Hotels in London, doing joinery and general maintenance. I loved the work and soon trained in plumbing and heating engineering which meant I could offer a more comprehensive service.”
Anthony then moved into sales, working with Pret A Manger to develop their packaging before selling laundry products to high-end retailers such as Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and John Lewis. Other roles included manufacturing, fitting out offices and project management before moving to Cornwall around the turn of the millennium.
“These varied experiences and different job roles developed my understanding of what business is about,” explained Anthony. “As I neared 40 I wanted to start my own business that could provide for my family’s future and be an asset to the local community.”
Coastal Group was born on the shores of Cornwall in 2003, selling a small range of door handles. Coastal has since grown to employ over 50 members of staff, manufacturing and supplying joiners, door and window manufacturers, specifiers and end users with high-quality hardware that lasts.
“All four of my sons have come on board and work very hard to grow the business further,” Anthony continued. “I’m proud to hand the company over to them. I remain by their side and keep in close contact with the business but am confident that they have it in control, with help from a great team.”
Coastal Group now provides a full service to the trade, supplying a wide range of high-quality door and window furniture, locks, hinges and more.

The company has been through a lot since its inception, with recessions, global conflict, supply chain issues and changes in technology. “One of the biggest challenges has been getting good staff who want to come on the journey with you but I feel we have the best and most dedicated team who are key to our continued success.”

Coastal Group is particularly proud of the technical support and specialist advice offered to the trade.
“We’re lucky to employ people who have worked as joiners, some of whom are former customers of Coastal,” explained Anthony. “That’s one of our key strengths that our current customers really appreciate. Being able to speak their language and truly understand their challenges is essential.”
Coastal Group continues to support the industry by creating how-to guides and videos to answer the most frequently asked questions and challenges.
Anthony’s oldest son, Loren Jenner, now manages operations at the business, supported by his three brothers and a growing team. “I’m proud to have the opportunity to carry on what Dad started,” said Managing Director Loren Jenner. “We’re lucky to have an amazing staff who are passionate about what we do and who help move us forward every day.”
Pictured: Coastal Group team, 20-year celebration, 2024

As part of the 20th anniversary, Coastal Group hosted a celebration team day at the iconic Eden Project in Cornwall.
“The event was a chance to thank staff for their hard work, share our vision for the future and celebrate individual and company achievements,” continued Loren.
Guest speaker Sir Tim Smit closed the event with an inspiring talk about building something great.
Coastal Group is already embarking on the next stage of its journey, with new products, services and training in the pipeline. “We’d like to thank all our customers and suppliers who have supported us on this journey so far,” concluded Loren. “We look forward to sharing the next twenty years and beyond.”

ZEROplus Explain the Benefits of Fitting Brush Pile Seal

Leading door hardware supplier ZEROplus explains the many advantages of fitting brush pile strip to doors and windows.

Also known as brush strips, weatherstripping brush, draught seals or wool pile seals, brush seals help to make buildings quieter, cleaner and more energy efficient.

An inexpensive, versatile, easy-to-install solution, brush seal protects against draughts, heat, noise, pollution, insects, vermin, and water ingress.

Brush seals will help many homes, offices and industrial buildings stay dryer, warmer and more energy-efficient during the cold, wet and windy winter months.

Mark Lockley, Managing Director of ZEROplus, explains:

“With their dense bristles, brush seals are an excellent way to reduce air leakage around doors and windows and prevent uncomfortable draughts.

“They provide a great draught-preventing solution in older buildings or to seal uneven surfaces.

“The flexible nature of brush pile means the malleable bristles conform to any irregularities, forming a tight seal and blocking any cold or warm air from passing through and preventing air infiltration.

“A brilliant way to seal the gap between doors and thresholds, brush seals can provide an impressive three times more air infiltration reduction than vinyl seals”.

Along with helping to keep buildings warm, brush seals also help to reduce noise pollution and create a quieter indoor environment.

Mark continues:

“As brush pile seals any gaps around windows and doors, it helps to restrict the transmission of sound waves and reduce noise infiltration.

“The fitting of brush seal is an excellent, cost-effective solution to help reduce annoying and distracting high-frequency sounds, such as voice and traffic noise.

“The tightly packed bristles of brush pile also make it much more difficult for dirt, dust, pollen and unwanted insects and pests, such as mosquitoes, flies and ants, to enter your indoor space”.

Durable and versatile, self-adhesive or screw-fixing brush seals can be used on various types of windows and doors.

From casement windows, sliding doors and hinged doors to sliding windows and wardrobe and cabinet doors.

Self-adhesive brush pile from ZEROplus is available in various brush heights and lengths – 7.5m, 30m or 50m.

With a soft multifilament pile yarn on a woven, reinforced translucent backing, the self-adhesive brush pile has two welded clear centre fins for improved weather sealing of sliding windows and doors.

To learn more about the high-quality, flexible brush pile from ZEROplus and their extensive range of door hardware, visit zeroplus.co.uk or call 01785 282 910.

Winkhaus UK, a leader in innovative door-locking solutions, proudly announces their newest addition to their catalogue of reliable and groundbreaking technology.

The Interlocking Stable Door Solution is a revolution in security and design, taking inspiration from the features and performance characteristics of the popular Cobra multi-point locking system.

This new innovation provides enhanced security with four locking points featuring separate deadbolts and hooks for both the upper and lower parts of the stable door.

Designed with precision and functionality in mind, the system's integrated shoot bolt eliminates the need for additional hardware to link the two parts of the door.

This not only saves valuable time in fabrication but also enhances the overall aesthetic design of the door, providing a sleek and seamless appearance.

One of the standout features of the Winkhaus Interlocking Stable Door Locking System is its easy-to-adjust roller ball latch.

During installation, this feature ensures precise setup, streamlining the process for builders and installers.

Furthermore, the simplified future adjustment capability ensures a hassle-free experience throughout the entire lifespan of the door, adding convenience for the user and precision for a perfect fit.

To accommodate diverse design preferences, the upper and lower locks are supplied with 1300mm length faceplates.

This generous provision empowers architects and designers with the freedom to create a wide range of door styles, catering to various aesthetic preferences and architectural requirements.

All Winkhaus products include Nano Protect as standard, an innovative coating, applied through a rigorous electroplating process, which boosts reliability and longevity.

Tested to EN 1670 corrosion protection class 5, surpassing the requirements by 66%, it offers excellent corrosion resistance.

Notably, our Nano Protect coating exhibits self-regeneration, sealing light scratches from daily use with silicon dioxide particles.

Mike Rushen, Sales Director at Winkhaus UK, said:

“Manufactured and designed in our state-of-the-art facility in Meiningen Germany, the Interlocking Stable Door solution has all the qualities customers expect from a Winkhaus locking solution.

“The integrated interlocking mechanism reduces the amount of visual hardware, simplifying sourcing, preparation and fabrication for our customers.

“This product is a testament to the innovation, functionality and design excellence that Winkhaus represents and it is set to transform the way stable doors are fabricated and experienced.”

New from Hörmann the ET500 series 3 - The optimal solution for collective garage doors

Hörmann UK has announced the introduction of their ET500 series 3 collective garage doors, providing low maintenance together with extremely smooth and safe operation.

Designed as a non-protruding up-and-over door, the ET500 has been specifically developed for installations where collective garage doors open directly onto a pavement as the door leaf only swings out by 30mm.

The door has been designed for high-use areas and includes wear-free counter-weight technology designed for a service life of at least 250,000 door cycles providing long-term functional reliability.

Whilst a combination of buffers and rollers together with double rubber and damping springs ensure that the door opens and closes smoothly and quietly.

In addition, two integrated photocells located within the door frame automatically stop the door should any obstruction be detected within the opening/closing sequence ensuring the highest operational safety standards.

Matching side doors and the option to incorporate a low threshold wicket door provide easy and safe pedestrian access.

The ET500 has a flush-fitting frame which is colour-matched to the door leaf giving it a particularly neat and attractive finished appearance.

Sixteen standard colours are available including White aluminium, the ever-popular Anthracite grey and bold Ruby red, together with RAL colours of choice.

Available up to a maximum size of 6000mm wide x 3000mm high, the range includes twelve different styles and door leaf versions with the option of steel and aluminium sheets, expanded mesh and perforated steel.

Also available are door styles which allow for customised, onsite infill panels to match specific building designs and materials.

A selection of three new surface-mounted infill panels has also just been launched in Corten steel, Stone, and Concrete finishes to provide the option of additional creativity and a hardwearing surface finish.

The ET500 can be fully automated with a Hörmann operator which provides quick and easy access via a hand-held transmitter or mobile phone using the Hörmann BiSecur app, a secure, encrypted bi-directional radio system for added security.

Goodwood announces theme of 2024 Festival of Speed

Goodwood is pleased to announce that the theme for the 2024 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will be ‘Horseless to Hybrid – Revolutions in Power’, celebrating the essence of our love affair with motorsport.

From the birth of organised competition, 130 years ago, with the Paris-Rouen Trial of 1894, the quest for speed has gone hand-in-hand with developments in engines, propulsion and power. The 2024 Festival of Speed will celebrate the many thrilling advances that have propelled us to where we are today, and look at what new ideas may drive us into the future.

The entry list for that Paris-Rouen event, on Sunday 22 July 1894, included vehicles powered by everything from steam, petrol and electricity, to gravity, compressed air and hydraulics, reflecting the fact that, in the early years of the ‘horseless carriage’, there was no consensus as to the best power source.

After a century dominated by the internal combustion engine, we once again find ourselves at a crossroads, with electric, hydrogen, hybrid and sustainable fuels all offering potential solutions for a greener future. As well as remembering how far the automotive and motor racing industries have come in the past 130 years, ‘Horseless to Hybrid’ will, crucially, look ahead at what comes next.

The theme will be reflected throughout the event, from the cars and drivers taking to the renowned Goodwood hill to immersive experiences in Future Lab presented by Randox, exhibiting some of the most innovative new technology.

The Festival of Speed has long championed emerging technologies. In 2023 we welcomed four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel as he drove his ex-Nigel Mansell 1992 Williams FW14B and ex-Ayrton Senna 1993 McLaren MP4/8 on sustainable fuel. Vettel brought his “Race Without Trace” campaign to Goodwood, encouraging the adoption of alternative fuels by both the motorsport industry and wider world.

In 2024 the Goodwood Revival will serve as a landmark moment in motorsport history, as the entire weekend of historic racing is set to take place using sustainable fuel. The theme for this year’s Festival of Speed emphasises Goodwood’s commitment to the future of mobility at its headline motorsport events.

Alongside this central theme, the 2024 Festival will mark a number of other significant anniversaries. We will remember the incomparable Niki Lauda, in the year he would have celebrated his 75th birthday, as well as 50 years since his first grand prix victory and 40 years since the last of his three World Championships. We will also honour the legendary Shadow team, 50 years after they won the final Can-Am championship, and Joest Racing, 40 years after their first Le Mans win, with many more celebrations to be announced in the coming months.

Book now to save on tickets during the early bird window

Customers can save on Festival of Speed admission tickets during our early bird window when purchasing before 29 February. Tickets for Thursday, Friday and Sunday are available to purchase here.
