Seven Aston Martin Vantage GT3s provide strongest ever assault on Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa

Aston Martin’s new Vantage GT3 will make its Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa debut this weekend as the British ultra-luxury sportscar brand bids to win the race outright for the first time since the event became a GT3-only race in 2012.

No less than seven Vantages – the largest ever contingent of Aston Martin GT3s – are entered by two of Aston Martin’s new-for-2024 partner teams, ComToYou Racing and Walkenhorst Motorsport.

This represents more than 10% of the giant 67-strong entry, which comprises nine competing global manufacturers and five integral classes.

Both teams head into the 100th anniversary of an event Aston Martin last won in 1948 (when the race was run to different rules), aiming to crown a landmark month that has produced maiden victories for the new Vantage GT3 in North America, Asia and Europe.

The Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa represents the last opportunity to bring home some silverware in a blue riband ‘twice around-the-clock’ race in 2024, with Vantage having shone brightly in the Rolex 24 Hours, Nürburgring 24 Hours and the recent 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Both teams’ bids are boosted by the presence of an all-works driver line-up with their single Pro class entries.

ComToYou Racing’s #7 will bring a familiar feel for Aston Martin Racing fans the world over as the ‘Dane Train’ duo of Nicki Thiim and Marco Sørensen are reunited alongside Mattia Drudi (ITA).

Between them, Thiim and Sørensen boast five FIA GT World Endurance Championship titles and two 24 Hours of Le Mans class wins.

Neither has ever won the Spa classic however, though their team-mate Drudi, the reigning Fanatec GT World Europe Sprint Cup champion, finished second overall in 2020.

Walkenhorst Motorsport’s #34 entry boasts an equally exciting line-up with David Pittard (GBR), the 2023 Nürburgring 24 Hours winner, being joined by Henrique Chaves, the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner, and Ross Gunn (GBR) hot off the podium from recording the new Vantage GT3’s first victory in IMSA.

Between them, the six works Aston Martin drivers represent the strongest-ever assault on the race’s Pro class by the brand.

Moreover, it comes into the event with Vantage in a rich vein of form having clinched victories in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the SUPER GT Series, the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie and Road to Le Mans event in the past four weekends.

ComToYou Racing has entered three further Vantage GT3s, which all share the mechanical architecture of the new Vantage road car unveiled earlier this year at Silverstone, and which are built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis and powered by its fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine.

The Belgian team’s #11 Bronze Cup entry will be driven by John de Wilde (BEL), Kobe Pauwels (BEL), Job van Uitert (NED) and Dante Rappange (NED).

It also has two Silver Cup entries; the #12 will be raced by Nicolas Baert (BEL), Esteban Muth (BEL), Sebastian Øgaard (DEN) and Erwan Bastard (FRA), while the #21 will feature Charles Clark (GBR), Sam Dejonghe (BEL), Matisse Lismont (BEL) and Xavier Maassen (NED).

Walkenhorst Motorsport brings a strong Silver Cup line-up to its fleet of Vantage GT3s, with Romain Leroux (FRA), Lorcan Hanafin (GBR) and Maxime Robin (FRA) in the #35.

Meanwhile the team’s Bronze Cup #36 car will also be a competitive force with drivers Tim Creswick (GBR), Mex Jansen (NED) and Ben Green (GBR).

Aston Martin has an even larger share of the GT4 European Series supporting double- header, with no less than nine Vantage GT4s entered by five partner teams including Forsetti Motorsport, GPA Racing, Mirage Racing, Racing Sprirt of Léman and PROsport Racing.

Adam Carter, Head of Endurance Motorsport, said:

“The Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa represents perhaps the purest form of GT endurance racing, given that it is open only to GT3 cars.

“It makes it a unique and difficult, and therefore perfect, test of our new Vantage GT3.

“The car has performed well through June, winning in three continents including North America, and it shone brightly in the 24 Hours of Le Mans two weeks ago.

“Misfortune has played its part in all the major 24 hours races so far this season, so let’s hope we’ve had our fill of that ahead of Spa.

“Sixty-seven entries from nine manufacturers tells its own story about what this race means to the sport on its 100th anniversary and it would be a proud claim to say that new Vantage had excelled in this event.”

Aston Martin recorded its best finish in the GT3 era in 2021, when Gunn, Sørensen and Thiim secured a competitive third place overall, having been in the lead fight for much of the race.

Prior to that, the best GT finish for an Aston Martin was also third, in 2008, with the Gigawave DBR9.

Aston Martin last won the event in 1948, when it was run to different regulations, with a 2-Litre Sports DB1 driven by Britons St John Horsfall and Leslie Johnson.

The event began in earnest on Thursday, 27 June, with a 90-minute free practice session at 1120 CET.

Qualifying took place from 2035 CET the same day, while a special Superpole session will took place at 1545-1615 CET on Friday.

The race began at 1630 CET on Saturday 29 June.

Follow details of the event via the official Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS website and App.

UK’s first Hydrogen Power Generator Available for Purchase and Hire

Commercial Fuel Solutions Limited, specialists in the design, development and distribution of fuel storage and transfer systems, has announced becoming the exclusive distributor of the UK’s first commercially available hydrogen internal combustion power generator.

As exclusive UK distributors for Belgian generator specialists e-power, Commercial Fuel Solutions Ltd will offer the 45 kVA Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) Electrical Power Generator for purchase and hire. Debuting the H2ICE generator at the Executive Hire Show, the partnership underscores Commercial Fuel Solutions’ knowledge and expertise regarding safe hydrogen deployments.

The e-power® E45 hydrogen power generator is a ground-breaking product designed to operate on any grade of hydrogen, revolutionising the benchmarks for clean, efficient, and cost-effective energy generation. Utilising a hydrogen combustion engine, this generator is a more robust technology than traditional fuel cell technologies, providing a resilient solution for diverse power requirements at a fraction of the usual capital expenditure (CAPEX).

Robin Futcher, Founder and CEO of Commercial Fuel Solutions, said:
“We are thrilled to introduce the 45 kVA H2ICE Electrical Power generator exclusively in the UK. This generator marks a significant advancement in hydrogen power technology, offering a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and high-performance solution for power generation. With its lower CAPEX, ability to withstand fuel impurities, and decreased fuel expenses, it is the clear choice for businesses committed to investing in the future of hydrogen energy and making substantial strides in reducing their carbon footprint.”
Commercial Fuel Solutions offers a comprehensive turnkey package. Alongside the H2ICE generator, the company conducts thorough site safety risk assessments to ensure suitability, integrating DSEAR risk assessments with zoning diagrams and compliance checks. Specially trained technicians manage the installation and commissioning of the generator, while providing necessary training, permits for work, and safe operation oversight. Additionally, Commercial Fuel Solutions provides all service, maintenance, and emergency call-out coverage within the warranty period.

Moreover, Commercial Fuel Solutions can supply hydrogen safely and reliably, offer remote fuel consumption monitoring, and seamlessly integrate systems into the customer's existing infrastructure.

The 45 kVA H2ICE Generator utilises hydrogen combustion to produce dependable electrical power, offering an emissions-free alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based generators. This method not only ensures minimal emissions but also capitalises on the cost efficiencies of hydrogen when used as a fuel source. Unlike fuel cell-based systems, the H2ICE generator is less vulnerable to impurities in the hydrogen supply, ensuring sustained reliability and reducing fuel costs over time. This affordability makes the E45 hydrogen power generator an attractive option for businesses and operations aiming to minimise their environmental impact through hydrogen power.

Engineered for durability and easy maintenance, the E45 H2ICE Electrical Power Generator's sturdy design is suitable for various applications, from industrial uses to emergency backup power, ensuring uninterrupted critical operations. With reduced fuel expenses and environmental advantages, it presents an ideal solution for forward-thinking enterprises committed to achieving sustainability objectives without sacrificing power or performance.

BMW at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed

All eyes will be on BMW at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed to witness the world premiere of the new BMW X3, alongside another significant world debut from the BMW Group.

Both cars will be unveiled at BMW’s Trackside stand from 10:30 am (BST) on Thursday 11 July.

Also seen for the first time in the UK will be the new and exclusive BMW M4 CS, which will be joined on the hill by ground-breaking BMW XM Label.

Festivalgoers will be able to see the spectacular BMW M Hybrid V8 and BMW R20 concept in action as well, whilst the Stable Yard will provide the perfect stage for BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse, the luxurious BMW Concept Skytop and the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA with colour-change technology.

The latest models from BMW M will be on display at Trackside, including the new BMW M135, the facelifted BMW M2 and BMW M3 Touring and - taking centre stage - the BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh.

The new BMW X3 M50 xDrive will be unveiled to the world at Goodwood and is the fourth generation SAV, adding another chapter to the BMW X3 success story which began over 20 years ago.

The range-topping model boasts greater sporting appeal, visual impact and versatility than ever before and features the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine yet fitted in an M Performance model.

The 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo unit links up with 48V mild hybrid technology.

Its maximum output of 398 hp is channelled to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

The BMW X3 M50 xDrive powers to 62 mph from rest in 4.6 seconds.

Tackling the famous 1.16-mile course in the ‘First Glance’ category will be the new BMW M4 CS.

Powered by a high-revving six-cylinder in-line 3.0-litre engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, the race-focussed BMW M4 CS has an increased engine output of 550 hp and features model-specific chassis tuning and lightweight design elements.

Instantaneous power delivery and optimised traction enable acceleration of 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.

Fresh from racing at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, the stunning BMW M Hybrid V8 will also take to the hill.

The return of the BMW brand to the top category of Le Mans in the Hypercar class came exactly 25 years after the victory of the BMW V12 LMR in 1999.

To acknowledge this historic moment BMW Group Classic will drive the iconic V12 up the hill.

The team will also bring two additional famous racing cars to Goodwood’s Hillclimb - the BMW 318i touring car, driven by famed racing driver Johnny Cecotto and the BMW2002 TIK, with HRH Leopold Prince of Bavaria at the wheel.

Festivalgoers will also be able to see a BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh at Trackside, whilst visitors to the stand can learn more about the 20th BMW Art Car - the Hypercar designed by the internationally renowned artist Julie Mehretu - that played a very special role at this year’s Le Mans.

BMW will storm up the hill on two wheels as well. BMW Motorrad recently unveiled its latest design masterpiece, the BMW R20 concept, at Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este and will bring it to this year’s Festival.

Presented as a piece of art and as the epitome of expressive and cool design, the BMW R20 concept showcases the legendary air-oil cooled Big Boxer engine at its centre.

The R20 can be seen in the ‘First Glance and Road Bikes’ category, whilst a wonderful BMW R255/1 Compressor from BMW Group Classic will feature in ‘Batch 4’.

The Stable Yard – once again dedicated to BMW – will be transformed into a tranquil location showcasing luxury and technology: from the BMW Concept Skytop, an open top two-seater demonstrating truly unique and exotic design, to the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, a one-of-a-kind vehicle that combines colour- change technology developed by BMW with the artistic language of South African artist Esther Mahlangu.

For many however, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will form the focal point of the display - the Neue Klasse showcases the breadth of BMW’s future model line-up.

BMW’s latest range of luxury cars will also be on display in the Stable Yard including the BMW i7, the brand’s flagship saloon that has redefined the luxury segment with new levels of electrification and digitalisation.

The recently launched BMW i5 Touring will take centre stage in this tranquil space, alongside two e- vehicles from BMW Motorrad – the BMW CE 02 and BMW CE 04 - that provide a breath of fresh air for urban electric mobility on two wheels.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is being held over four days from 11-14 July 2024.

Govette Windows wins Best Domestic Project at the SWA Awards 2024

Govette Windows has won the Best Domestic Project category at the Steel Window Association Awards for work on a house extension in Weybridge, Surrey.

John Ramshaw, Technical Editor of Architecture Today and judge for the Steel Window Association Awards, explained

“Govette worked hard to ensure that the windows and doors met the exacting performance and aesthetic demands of both the architect and client – and this really shows in the finished building.

“A worthy winner.”

Read on to find out why John was so impressed with this winning project.

A major extension to a large detached property in Weybridge, Surrey featured elegant W20 steel windows and doors to create a series of tall screens, opening up views of the verdant garden while flooding the stylish new kitchen and dining room with light.

Govette Windows designed, fabricated and installed the fenestration package, which was carried out by approved developer Kantec Bespoke Ltd. Concept Eight was the lead architect on this project.

The architect designed single storey extension wraps around the full width of the building’s rear elevation, with a 2.4 metre long, L-shaped window creating a stunning corner feature.

Multiple double doors, with side panels and fixed lights above, form the two main 3430mm tall screens where the line of the steel mullions emphasise the height of the fenestration.

All of the W20 sections are hot dip galvanised and polyester powder coated in RAL 1035, Pearl Beige, while the 16mm double glazed units are Krypton filled and contain soft coat as well as low iron glass with warm edge spacer bars to offer high thermal performance.

Steel doors and windows also provide peace of mind in terms of their rugged resistance to forced entry and long term durability against the elements.

Govette Windows’ contribution to the project also included a stylish internal sliding door screen, separating the kitchen from a dayroom/lounge.

Again, fabricated from W20 profiles to ensure continuity between the internal and external screens and glazed with 6.4mm laminated glass, the doors use a Henderson mechanism that is also suitable for ceiling mounting and ‘pocket’ applications.

Special blanking off plates developed by the SWA cap the profiles for a neater appearance, with the meeting stiles also including a draught strip.

Commenting on the choice of steel frames, the owner of the property, (Sarah Stirrett), said:

“This was something I’d always wanted to do, because I think steel framed windows just have that timeless, industrial appearance and would really suit the style of our old Edwardian house.

“This is a really modern addition to the house – almost like a 180 degrees extension across and around the side, rather than the typical ‘box on the back’, and the large area of glazing really suits it.

“Govette Windows was fantastic to deal throughout – they really reassured me over thermal performance of steel systems at the beginning.

“Overall, it’s been a lovely job throughout.”
