Why Companies Must Embrace the Internet of Things

The conditions for IoT implementation are right. Within 12 months, most businesses will be using some form of IoT in their everyday operations, which is why it’s the perfect time to begin. Smart, connected products present a game-changer for industrial operations, driving efficiency, higher profit and improved customer service.

What is IoT?

IoT technology enables devices to connect and exchange data over the internet.

Sensors are embedded into physical objects so data can be transmitted to online servers through gateways and cloud platforms.

IoT sensors collect data such as temperature, humidity, motion, and location and they use these insights to achieve advanced monitoring capabilities.

For example, smart cameras and control systems enhance security using real-time monitoring and alerts.

Why Companies Who Embrace IoT Can Be Early Winners

IoT reduces pressure on manual labour, enhances security and safety and minimises product downtime.

These smart devices offer operation managers a full view of all activity across entire buildings, unlocking advanced levels of oversight.

In the door manufacturing industry, in particular, IoT sensors can track every time a door opens and closes, the specific location of the door as well as maintenance reports and potential faults.

This helps ensure optimum performance across all products and gives better product and usage understanding.

Predictive Maintenance: The Key to Future-Proofed Operations

With IoT devices, product malfunctions can be predicted before faults occur, preventing unexpected downtime and saving costs.

Notifications, like email or SMS, alert relevant staff as soon as abnormalities in product activity arise, facilitating early fixes.

This proactive approach improves first-time fix rates (FTFR) and reduces emergency repair expenses.

When service teams can access a dynamic dashboard of product data, repairs can be carried out more efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions About IoT

Companies may be concerned about the adoption of new technology when transforming to a digital age.

Here’s how to prepare for frequently asked customer questions:

  • Won’t new technology be more complicated to install?

Installing an IoT gateway is simple; most device manufacturers, including GfA, use a plug-and play approach.

Installers don’t need existing IT knowledge to implement the devices.
  • Are IoT products costly?

The cost of IoT-enabled products can vary depending on the type and number of deployed devices.

However, the long-term benefits outweigh the initial expense, as companies usually spend significantly less on product maintenance.
  • What is the future of IoT?

IoT devices will continue to be developed to encourage widespread adoption across various industries.

New technologies and machine learning are consistently evolving to analyse large volumes of data and make autonomous decisions in real time.

GfA: Leading the IoT Revolution

GfA stands at the forefront of the industrial door sector.

They’re not just manufacturers, they’re innovators dedicated to pushing the boundaries.

With their IoT innovations, GfA is the perfect partner for businesses looking to improve their operations in the future.

Jeld-Wen Supports Golden Thread in Data Pin Doorset Launch

One of the UK’s leading doorset manufacturers, JELD-WEN has launched a new data pin solution that will promote greater fire safety compliance among customers.

The new data pin, provided by Door Data Systems, will now be installed across every Certifire doorset by JELD-WEN, allowing for the Golden Thread of information to be implemented at the earliest stage.

Offering an advanced level of digital recording and data collection for fire doorsets in commercial and multi-occupancy buildings, the pins will enhance traceability and enable individuals in positions of responsibility to demonstrate a comprehensive approach to fire door compliance.

Fitted in the hinge side of the door during the manufacturing process, the pin will provide immediate access to its certification, technical documentation, installation guides, warranties and inspection reports.

These records are linked to a state-of-the-art system, whereby data is stored and available via a free-to-download app.

To further enhance the user experience, data is presented in a clear and easy-to-read central dashboard, meaning no specialist training is required, while features such as scheduled reminders can support building management in future fire door maintenance.

Glyn Hauser, R&D Senior Group Manager at JELD-WEN comments:

“As one of the first manufacturers to introduce this advanced data pin system, we’re advocates for greater transparency throughout the supply chain, which we believe is needed to improve modern fire door practice.

“Compliance is in the DNA of every JELD-WEN product, and launching the data pin is an important step in ensuring the Golden Thread can be implemented at the very first opportunity.

“We believe this capability will allow for better facility management of a building and, ultimately, a safer environment for the people within it.”

As part of JELD-WEN’s commitment to providing customers with end-to-end support throughout the lifecycle of their doorsets, a number of easy-to-follow videos will ensure best practice is achieved during the installation stage of the Golden Thread process.

For more information on JELD-WEN’s new data pin solution, visit https://www.jeld-wen.co.uk/door-data-pin

Van drivers could be fined £1,000 if they have a dirty vehicle

Whilst it is not explicitly illegal to drive a dirty vehicle, there are specific regulations concerning certain aspects of vehicle cleanliness that could result in legal issues.

For example, it is illegal to drive with number plates that are too dirty to be readable. Number plates must be legible at all times so that the vehicle can be easily identified.

It is also illegal to drive with windows, mirrors, and lights that are dirty to the extent that they affect the driver’s vision or the visibility of the vehicle. Drivers must ensure these are clean and unobstructed to maintain safe driving conditions.

Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines and potentially even penalty points on the driver’s licence.

If you are caught with a dirty number plate, you may receive an on-the-spot fine of £100. If the matter is passed to court, this can increase up to £1,000. Having a dirty windscreen could also land you a fine of £1,000.

While there is no specific fine for having a messy car interior, too much litter could result in three penalty points if you are found to be driving without due care and attention.

In addition to potentially obscuring a driver's view out of windows or mirrors, litter left lying around could cause a hazard if it becomes trapped underneath the pedals, potentially preventing the vehicle from braking properly.

Tim Alcock from Lease Van said:
“Although driving a generally dirty vehicle is not outright illegal, there are specific cleanliness standards that, if not met, could lead to legal repercussions.
“Neglecting these regulations can result in fines and possibly even points on your licence, and repeated offences could even lead to more severe penalties, including potential court appearances and higher insurance premiums.
“To avoid these issues, regular vehicle maintenance is key. Washing your car, especially the number plates, windows, and lights, ensures visibility and identification. You can keep the interior clean by using a litter bin or bag in your vehicle to prevent rubbish from becoming a hazard.
“Remember, maintaining a clean vehicle isn’t just about avoiding fines – it’s about ensuring your safety and the safety of others on the road.”

Securing the Future: Abloy UK launches new white paper

Abloy UK, a leading provider of security and access control solutions, has launched a new white paper, titled Securing the Future: Revolutionising Critical Infrastructure Access Control with Digital Solutions.

The document investigates the transformative potential of digital access control technologies, specifically focusing on the comparative strengths and weaknesses of Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth.

Steve Wintle, Head of Critical Infrastructure at Abloy UK said:

“From bridges and viaducts to data centres and telecom facilities, the need for robust and reliable access control solutions has been a constant challenge for critical infrastructure facilities and security managers.

“Historically, these types of environments have been secured using traditional mechanical locks.

“However, as technology has advanced, there’s been a significant shift towards digital solutions that offer greater flexibility, reliability and ease of management.”

The white paper looks at how to set up an access control system so that it’s easy for the right people to access the right locations, at the right time, to do the right job.

Also, how to ensure unauthorised people can’t access restricted areas at any time.

The document explores the evolution of access control, which comes as a detailed analysis of the transition from mechanical to digital solutions and the key drivers behind this change.

The white paper then highlights the limitations of traditional mechanical systems, the benefits of digital access control and the strategic advantages of developing access control solutions with an API-first approach, ensuring seamless integration with existing IT infrastructures.

One of the main stand outs from the content is the discussion of NFC vs Bluetooth, an in-depth comparison of NFC and Bluetooth technologies in access control applications.

It covers the pros and cons of each application, looking at speed, range, remote unlocking, security, and authentication.

The white paper examines Abloy BEAT – a keyless, mobile operated solution designed for critical infrastructure applications, representing a future-proof access control solution for the most demanding environments.

Steve added:

“Our findings highlight the next steps in enhancing security, efficiency, and scalability in critical infrastructure access management.

“We are proud to unveil this white paper that introduces in depth strategies for integrating solutions seamlessly into security frameworks.”

The Summer Issue of Door Industry Journal is available to read online now!

Good morning and Welcome to the Summer 2024 Issue of the DIJ.

Since our last issue, the election has been and gone and a new administration is in place.

From a sector perspective, this may be cause for optimism, as Labour has promised to build 1.5 million homes over the next five years and unblock the UK’s notoriously sluggish planning system. And where there are new houses, there’s work for us all.

Will it happen? We can only hope so. And it may not be until after the summer and the long parliamentary recess before we get a clearer idea of how these plans will become reality.

But while you wait, you at least have our summer issue to get stuck into.

Here are just some of the stories we cover inside:

  • It’s a milestone birthday for Chamberlain Doors, which is celebrating 50 years in the business (page 6)

  • Remembering the life and career of Thomas J. Hörmann (page 16)

  • Discussing the Internet of Things – and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the industry (page 22)

  • The Pegasus Door Company wins big at the Suffolk Small Business Awards (page 56)

  • Read about the long and successful partnership between SWS UK and Somfy (page 62)

  • Trojon Roller Doors has just released a brand new samples pack that showcases its entire range (page 64)

  • A new Managing Director has taken the reigns at FBS Hörmann (page 80)

  • Alucorb announces a newly extended 25-year guarantee on HorizAL aluminium gates (page 90)

  • Owen Jones - Technical Director at Distinction Doors – discusses the importance of third-party certification for composite fire doors (page 106)

  • Last but not least, a bit of summer fun (page 122)

OK, that lot should keep you going! I hope you have a relaxing summer break and enjoy some decent weather.

I’ll be back with you again in the autumn.

Hörmann extends successful Cleaning Kit Promotion

Hörmann UK has announced that, due to the success of their popular cleaning kit promotion, they will extend the campaign until the end of 2024.

Designed to support sales of their Secured by Design (SBD) sectional garage doors to the end consumer, the promotion encourages Hörmann dealers to register each installed door.

The homeowner receives a free door cleaning kit directly from Hörmann.

Hörmann are the only manufacturers to offer SBD as standard on their LPU42 and LPU67 automated sectional doors.

To be valid for SBD accreditation, the doors must be:

Registered with Hörmann
Installed behind the opening
Combined with a Hörmann operator
Unmodified and not include any glazing options or external handles
Fitted after 01.05.2021

The Hörmann cleaning kits, which are also available to purchase separately, contain cleaner and multi-sponge, 2-in-1 polish with application sponge, oil, and two microfibre cloths.

Regular cleaning of a garage door provides long-term protection against general wear and environmental conditions while enhancing the surface finish and colour.

Registration of installed doors is easy via a dedicated SBD website which provides information on the accreditation scheme and a simple registration system - https://hormannsecuredbydesign.splashthat.com/.

The promotion will now run until the 31st of December 2024.

Refresh for ADSA Academy

The ADSA Academy—the online learning platform for members of the Automatic Door Suppliers Industry—has undergone a radical revamp with improved functionality and personalisation.

The site, which boasts more than 60 courses – free of charge and pay-per-click, is now easier to navigate and will enable the Association to create and host more industry-specific content.

The changes have been implemented to give learners ‘greater ownership’ and feature a personalised dashboard to support continuous professional development and aid navigation.

There is also a new look and feel - bringing the Academy in line with ADSA’s corporate identity and design style.

The upgrade will also enable ADSA to streamline in-house processes: the platform boasts enhanced security features to support the management of member data, records and course bookings.

ADSA MD Ken Price said:

“The decision to improve the facility came about as part of a continuous review of ADSA processes and output.

“The Academy was first launched in 2019 and although additional course content was added over the years, it remained ‘fundamentally the same.’

“It was time for us to refresh the platform and technological advancements have given us a chance to make fundamental improvements that will also support future growth and development,”

The new Academy will launch this month (July) and roll out enhancements over the next few weeks.

For existing users, new login credentials will be issued, but learning records and certifications will be migrated to the new site.

In addition to improved personalisation – including user learning history and performance records – the site also has better configuration on mobile devices.

Over the past five years, more than 3000 people have used the online platform, completing an average of three courses per person, totalling more than 9000 completed courses.

Added Ken:

“As our membership has grown, so has the use of our Academy.

“We have seen a growth of over 20 per cent, year-on-year, since its introduction.

“Many members now consider its free-of-charge content to be essential CPD for their teams.”

For more information of ADSA membership contact: membership@adsa.org.uk

Garador Training Courses a Huge Success

Leading garage door manufacturer Garador says its training courses are proving a huge success.

Garador runs training courses throughout the year on both product familiarisation and also installation.

The product training courses offer expert advice and guidance to provide all sales staff with a full understanding of the huge range of doors available plus information on surveying, specification and pricing.

With so many advances in modern door design, operations and fitting systems, even people with a vast knowledge of the garage door industry will walk away with something new and interesting to support their business.

The installation course offers updated garage door information plus hands on installation training for a range of styles including canopy and retractable Up & Over, Sectional and GaraRoll doors.

It also includes an operator session.

Jon Watkins, managing director of Garador, comments:

“The idea of our training courses is to provide merchants and installers with as much information as possible about our products so that they are fully informed of all aspects about our modern garage doors.

“In recent years Garador has introduced a number of key innovations and changes, and these training courses are an excellent way to ensure everyone is properly informed.

“Our courses are free and proving very popular indeed.. despite running courses throughout the year, they are already fully subscribed,”

Courses run over two days at the company’s purpose built modern training facility adjacent to the Garador garage manufacturing plant in Yeovil, Somerset.

For more information about Garador’s range of garage doors, visit www.garador.co.uk or call 01935 443722.

ABLOY PULSE: A Revolutionary New Kinetic Energy Key System

Abloy UK has launched ABLOY PULSE, a revolutionary kinetic energy key system that seamlessly integrates advanced access control functionality with traditional mechanical key-based products, enhancing reliability, security and efficiency.

ABLOY PULSE keys harness kinetic energy; the system gets its power when the key is inserted into the cylinder.

This means that keys are maintenance-free as they do not rely on batteries or external power sources.

This combination of mechanical durability and electronic flexibility offers the best of both worlds, providing a robust and reliable solution for modern security needs.

One of the standout features of ABLOY PULSE is its off-the-shelf programmability. Locksmiths can programme the keys immediately upon purchase, allowing customers to receive same-day service.

This eliminates the traditional wait times associated with custom key creation, ensuring customers can secure their properties quickly and efficiently.

This feature is particularly beneficial for emergencies or clients requiring swift access solutions.

Thanks to a user-friendly SaaS web application, managing the ABLOY PULSE system is straightforward and efficient.

This platform allows security and facilities managers to issue new keys, revoke access, and monitor security settings.

The intuitive interface is designed to make these processes as simple as possible. The digital management system also supports remote access, providing flexibility and control from anywhere.

Due to its adaptability, ABLOY PULSE is suitable for various applications.

Whether for residential properties, commercial buildings, or institutional settings, the solution’s scalability ensures it meets specific security requirements.

In addition to its practical benefits, ABLOY PULSE represents a step towards more sustainable security solutions.

Aston Martin celebrates the 60th anniversary of Goldfinger with an 007-inspired secret experience in the heart of London

The House of Q, a new pop-up experience by Aston Martin inside London’s prestigious Burlington Arcade, has been created to celebrate 60 years of Aston Martin’s long-running association with the 007 film franchise.

The relationship began with the 1964 release of Goldfinger, the film which introduced James Bond to the now iconic DB5.

Launched alongside V57, a special James Bond anniversary edition of Aston Martin’s luxury lifestyle magazine, the House of Q by Aston Martin is accessed through a secret door within what appears to be a magazine newsstand inside House 12-13 Burlington Arcade, off Piccadilly in London’s Mayfair.

V57 features a specially designed illustration on the cover and an editorial detailing the relationship between Aston Martin and 007.

Covert messages will lead guests through a secret door. Visiting agents will then discover a speakeasy bar serving Champagne Bollinger.

The bar is adorned with technical drawings and parts from the original DB5, as well as sketches, diagrams, and schematics from Aston Martin and EON Productions archives.

On display is a top-secret Q flight case, along with hints at a future Aston Martin model, for those able to uncover it.

Often described as ‘the most famous car in the world’, the DB5 is the car that established Aston Martin as one of Britain’s most desirable luxury brands, quickly becoming the ultimate status symbol of the Swinging Sixties.

First launched in September 1963, DB5 had a potent 4.0-litre engine and a top speed exceeding 150mph.

Its styling, courtesy of Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, created a sophisticated design, which, when matched with its performance, produced a car that people dreamed of owning.

When DB5 was chosen to be in Goldfinger, laden with gadgets to help Bond fight his arch-enemy Auric Goldfinger, its iconic status was sealed forever.

Marco Mattiacci, Global Chief Brand and Commercial Officer of Aston Martin said:

“Aston Martin and James Bond are two British icons, forever linked.

“We are delighted to be celebrating this important 60th anniversary throughout 2024, marking the continuation of cinema’s longest-running and most successful product placement.

“The House of Q by Aston Martin provides something very special for our community of Aston Martin customers, enthusiasts, and fans of 007 to enjoy.

“We encourage everyone to join us on an immersive entry into the world of Bond and Aston Martin, celebrating our unique history with the films, spanning back to Goldfinger.”

The Bond theme is carried into every detail at the House of Q by Aston Martin, where guests will see the original Goldfinger script, film posters, and set photography.

Bowers & Wilkins' stunning audio, a brand with an enduring relationship with Bond's music, delivers sound.

Guests may also head upstairs to discover the Configurator Lab.

This will allow customers to work with Aston Martin design experts to configure their perfect Aston Martin.

The House of Q will host daily events, including design workshops hosted by the Aston Martin design and engineering teams.

From its inception in 1819, Burlington Arcade has positioned itself as an exclusive shopping destination for luxury brands.

The arcade's prime location is parallel to Bond Street and has an entry via Piccadilly. Today, the arcade is home to 47 brands specialising in accessories, including watches, jewellery, leather goods, shoes, and cashmere.

Trupti Shah, Commercial Director Burlington Arcade, commented:

“Burlington Arcade is thrilled to be jointly celebrating this milestone year for James Bond and Aston Martin.

“The continued partnership between our brands is inspiring and we are honoured to be the landmark destination capturing this iconic moment in cinema history.’’

The House of Q by Aston Martin opens to the public on Thursday, 18 July, and can be found at House 12-13, Burlington Arcade, 51 Piccadilly, London W1J 0QJ.

It will remain in Burlington Arcade until Sunday, 4 August.

Manufacturer’s Multi-Million Pound Move

One of the UK’s leading steel door manufacturers has moved to a new £6 million production facility. Robust UK has relocated to its brand-new factory on Lymedale Business Park in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which is more than double the size of its previous premises in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

New machinery has been invested in to increase capacity, reduce lead times and provide smoother fabrication and precision - all with the aim of benefitting their customers.

The firm, who employ over 150 staff and manufactures many thousands of door sets every year for customers across the UK, has more than 40 years of experience in making custom-made steel door solutions.

As a result of the move, the company’s custom-built powder coating line is also now one of the largest in the UK.

Robust UK was founded in 1999 and supplies an extensive range of products, including fire and security doors, personnel doors and glazed and louvered options. All doors are custom-built to order.

The door manufacturer, who became part of the Novoferm Group in 2019, has ambitious plans for the new facility, with a target to grow by 50% by 2030 and beyond.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to mark the site’s official opening, attended by several industry guests, including Novoferm Chief Executive Rainer Schackmann, Tony Doba, Director/Senior Managing Executive Officer and Kaz Tanaka, General Manager at Sanwa Holdings Corporation (Novoferm’s parent company).

Commercial Director Paul Williams said:

“From humble beginnings from our first site in Tean, we have grown exponentially.

“We are proud to operate in Staffordshire and it was vitally important to us that Robust UK’s new home remained in the county.

“We needed to find the perfect location not just to meet our specific manufacturing needs but the right site for our staff too. Lymedale Business Park is just that.

“It’s in a great position with bigger, better, fantastic facilities which will ultimately benefit our customers.”

He added:

“The factory move is just the start of a very exciting time for Robust and heralds the beginning of a major financial investment by Novoferm in the company’s future growth plans.

“Times are difficult for UK manufacturing, so to be able to invest over £6m in our future and celebrate our success is something all of us at Robust are very proud of.”

Vertical space in the new site has been maximised with Kardex towers and racking - providing more efficiencies than the ground footprint would suggest.

Robust UK’s new website is currently being constructed (www.robust-uk.com).
