ADSA Highlights the Importance of NVQs in Building Safety

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) highlights the critical role of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) for raising industry standards in the latest episode of its Tech Talk podcast.

www.ADSA.podbean.com/e/episode-4-nvqs-evidence-of-competence-in-the-powered-pedestrian-doors-industry/

It features in-depth insights from the ADSA team, along with special guest Carl Black, field support manager for dormakaba UK and Ireland.

They discuss how NVQs can be used to strengthen workforce competence, guarantee compliance and promote best practice in safety and performance.

The panel the evolution of the qualification, why it is a ‘must have’ at any stage of a technician’s career and discuss preparations that employers and candidates should when undertaking assessment.

The Building Safety Act, which came into force in October last year, requires regular safety checks and designates accountable persons to oversee the development and maintenance of high-risk buildings.

This regulatory shift has resulted in NVQs becoming an effective method of certification for technicians to a obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.

The podcast discussion outlines how NVQs validate practical skills and knowledge through work-based practical assessment, ensuring technicians are fully equipped to meet evolving safety and compliance standards.

ADSA managing director Ken Price highlights the impact NVQs are making on the safety and professionalism of the industry:

“NVQs provide a structured, recognised pathway to competence which is essential for meeting today’s rigorous safety standards.

“By achieving NVQs, technicians not only elevate their own skill set but also contribute to a safer built environment which is precisely what the Building Safety Act aims to ensure.”

dormakaba UK has integrated NVQs into its technician training programmes, bringing enhanced skills and compliance to the field.

Carl Black shared:

“At dormakaba, we have 120 technicians  that all have ongoing training and development.

“Our Training process includes, onsite audits, internal and external training, onsite training and technical assessments, which collectively establish a comprehensive foundation for skill development.

“NVQs validate that and evidence that our technicians possess the hands-on expertise needed for safe, compliant installations and maintenance.”

For more information on NVQs contact Fae Ellor: fae@adsa.org.uk or 01827 216134.

DHF launches Automated Gate Video to mark ‘Gate Safety Month’

DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has announced that it will mark another Gate Safety Month with a new animated video for Automated Gate Group members.

The video, ‘Why use a DHF trained engineer for your Automated Gate or Barrier Installation,’ can be viewed here.

“As well as running through the installation process, highlighting how safety is achieved, and emphasising why it is vital to use a DHF trained engineer, the video also demonstrates that without adequate safety measures and compliance, automated gates and traffic barriers can put people and organisations at risk,” explains DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.

“It is therefore essential that they are correctly designed and installed by trained installation engineers, for example, DHF members.”

The video launch comes on the 10th anniversary of the ‘gate safety’ campaign that the federation started in 2014, with the aim to promote the continued safe installation, repair, and maintenance of automated gates.

Initially called ‘Gate Safety Week’, the campaign was re-named ‘Gate Safety Month’ and has since become a year-round campaign aimed at creating awareness and educating both the public and industry professionals on the dangers of poor installation and maintenance, as well as how to spot an unsafe gate.

Over a ten-year period, Gate Safety Month has established a reputation as a highly effective campaign that continues to collaborate with organisations such as HSE and the British Safety Council to raise awareness and advocate for higher standards across the industry.

“Automated gates are continuing to prove a highly popular choice for consumers, and our objective to raise awareness has never been more important,” concludes Patricia.

“DHF’s message remains: Safe Gates Save Lives! and we hope this new animated video will help educate the industry on safety and compliance. We would urge our members to share this on their websites, social media platforms and with potential and existing customers.”

One of the newest additions to NW Rooftech’s ever-expanding portfolio is the market-leading Aluna luxury Bifold doors from Alunet Systems.

NW Rooftech’s Aluna Bifolds are specifically manufactured and designed with high-quality luxurious marine grade aluminium, advanced engineering techniques, super-slim 107mm sightlines from frame to sash and some of the largest sash sizes available at 1200mm wide and 3000mm high in order to achieve a set of unique advantages.

“In all of our 28-plus years of trading, we have listened to our trade customers and ensured to deliver on their every need for fenestration across the UK.

“By introducing the Aluna Bifold into our ever-growing range we can fabricate and supply one of the best Bifold systems I have ever seen and which all of my trade customers and their end-users are loving!”

NW Rooftech Customer, Premium Glazing agrees:

“NW Rooftech’s Bifold is easy and efficient to install and has one of the slimmest sightlines on the market, a whopping 25mm less than any other Bifold I have ever seen on the market!

“It has Part L compliant U-values as low as 1.1 W/m2K, DER Rating B, when combined with triple-glazed glass and 1.4 W/m2K when double-glazed.

“Its 120kg heavy-duty wheel hardware provides efficient, smooth, durable and unrestricted operation, and clip-in beads are also available.

“It offers PAS24-approved security plus dedicated shoot bolt intermediate locks and a traditional lever 3-point dead latch and hook lock to ensure maximum security.”

Fabricated With a Difference!

Not only does NW Rooftech provide market-leading Bifolds with all of their impressive features and advantages, but they also do it a little differently, offering even more value to their trade installers.

Andy explains:

“When fabricating and assembling, it is extremely important that the angles are correct.

“Incorrect angles can lead to lock misalignment, gaps and vulnerabilities, which can cause issues with durability, thermal efficiency, and overall performance.

“When laying the doors horizontally whilst fabricating, there is a significant risk of an error being made during the process.”

Andy continues:

“At NW Rooftech, we use a unique vertical rig to hold the doors in place at the perfectly framed correct angles to eliminate this margin for error and guarantee promised exquisite quality.

“We want our customers to be able to fit and forget, with complete assurance that their end-user has been provided with the best product on the market!”

Customer Burscough Bifolds confirms:

“I have been using NW Rooftech for many years; they are a game changer in the fast supply of amazing quality products.

“Their new bifold is no exception to this: a class product, sturdy, strong and secure.

“We recently fitted a large 5-panel bifold in just over an hour!

“The simplicity and speed of installation blew me away; their offering enables installers to double or triple their daily turnover when installing Bifolds.

“I recommend NW Rooftech and their quality portfolio to any fellow installer!”

Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX featured in Sony Pictures’ final film of the Venom trilogy

Volkswagen is thrilled to announce its appearance in Sony Pictures’ Venom blockbuster sequel, which premiered in theatres on 25 October 2024. The all-new Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX will get the cinematic treatment in the final film of the Venom trilogy.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz, the descendant of the legendary VW Bus, is returning to the North American market. Just in time for its launch, it is also making a name for itself in Hollywood: The Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX will be featured in Sony Pictures’ “Venom: The Last Dance”.

A strong, dynamic duo, the new ID. Buzz GTX comes as the most powerful model in the series, and it is, in fact, the most powerful production VW bus of all time. With a 250kW (340 hp) drive train, the ID. Buzz GTX accelerates from a standstill to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

Fittingly, the ID. Buzz is being “Venomized” in a brand-new role: we see the main character, Eddie Brock, and Venom approaching the vehicle and turning the red ID. Buzz into a powerful black GTX, just like Venom. Lights, camera, action!

Here's a link to the first trailer (or you can view the video below)

About Venom: The Last Dance

Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run, hunted by both of their worlds and with a net closing in on them, the duo is forced to make a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom’s and Eddie's last dance.

Venom: The Last Dance stars Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Peggy Lu, and Alanna Ubach. Kelly Marcel directed the film from a screenplay she wrote based on a story by Hardy and Marcel. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, Kelly Marcel, Tom Hardy, and Hutch Parker produced it.

About Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles:

Over 70 years ago, the first Transporter arrived in the UK, creating a blueprint which others would follow: a van which gets the job done efficiently and reliably.

Today, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers a diverse model range of commercial as well as passenger carrying and lifestyle models – from the compact Caddy, the new Transporter and sturdy Crafter panel vans, dropsides and tippers, through the Multivan passenger carrier, and Caddy California, new California and Grand California campervans, to the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo all-electric models, and the Amarok.

The vehicles are as versatile and dependable as Volkswagens have always been, but the range is now wider, and more connected, modern and safer than ever.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is committed to working in partnership with individuals and businesses, providing them with the best products and aftersales support, whether they’re buying one or a thousand vans.

Jack Aluminium Systems adds even more to its ID30 product offer with Bifold Door option

Demonstrating its continued commitment to innovation, Jack Aluminium Systems has launched an internal bifold door – the fourth new configuration added to its ID30 range – making it the go-to systems house for fabricators looking for the complete internal glazing package.

Launched in 2023, the ID30 system is designed for quick fabrication and easy installation. Now, with the addition of the bifold door, fabricators can use Jack Aluminium Systems as a one-stop-shop for internal glazing, with the full range of doorsets created with the same profile, hardware and accessories.

The comprehensive slimline range already consists of single and double hinged door and pivot door, as well as range of sliding door options with over frame, across wall and pocket door options, offering its customers the ultimate in choice and flexibility.

Andy Short, Jack Aluminium Systems Managing Director, says of the latest launch:

“We spent a long time designing the ID30 range, because we wanted to deliver a system that was unlike anything else on the market, and we’re confident in saying we’ve achieved that.
“We wanted ID30 to tick all the boxes for fabricators, delivering everything they need without having to go elsewhere for different door types, and the new bifold configuration allows us to do that. Just like our entire product range, whether it’s residential or commercial, we made sure to keep it simple despite there being so much versatility and choice within one system.
“The ID30 offering is unparalleled in that sense. Customers can create internal doors with any configuration and don’t have to be held back by design limitations. Plus, with the choice of ultra slim sightlines, invisible hinges, astragal bars, lock housing, transoms and butt hinges, it allows our customers to cater for both contemporary, minimalistic and classic, heritage styling.”

Following a move into a new factory on the outskirts of Coventry, the team at Jack Aluminium Systems now operate out of a 28,000 sq. ft. facility, , and has recently bolstered their technical team to help the aluminium specialist provide even better products and services to its customers.

Comp Door, Driving The Composite Door Market Through Innovation

The UK composite door market has been quite stagnant and unchanged over recent years, with very little innovation or enhancements to ward off competing entrance door products, such as aluminium or PVCu.

Comp Door has been on a mission lately to change this, with the vision to elevate composite doors as the entrance door of choice across the UK by developing and incorporating the latest next-generation technological products and features into their doors.

Comp Door recently hosted a Next Generation Launch Event at the National Space Station in Leicester to announce all of its new groundbreaking, first-to-market product innovations.

More than 150 installers and industry press came from as far as Dundee and Southampton to attend this momentous industry event.

The event saw the unveiling of several brand-new initiatives, including SleekSkin, their new door finish, which is unlike any other offering currently on the market.

Their exciting new partnership with Kubu to offer a range of high-security smart technology and sensors into Comp Doors as standard.

In addition to their newly developed luxurious ultimate glass surrounds, border door styles, and enhancements to their marine-grade hardware offering.

Richard Diliberto, Sales Director at Comp Door, said:

“The launch event was phenomenal. Customers instantly took to the new products and were blown away by the unveiling presentation, the venue, and the demonstrations.

“We have received an overwhelming response to all of the products launched and have already had a large number of customers signing up to have SleekSkin as part of their showroom display and to be part of the Kubu scheme in preparation for the full integration in December.”

He continues:

“Due to the word spreading faster than we ever imagined, we've also vast enquiries come through from prospective customers that we've never had contact with previously.

“These new initiatives are making real waves across the industry, which was our mission and intention so that together we can ensure a positive future and growth in demand for composite doors in the UK.”

Comp Door’s newly launched pioneering initiatives were designed with their customers centrefold, created to enable their installers to stand head and shoulders above competitors, further exceeding their homeowners’ expectations, whilst also propelling sales and generating increased demand.

Sam Kay, Managing Director of K Glazing Limited, said at the event:

“SleekSkin – ‘I love it! This is just what the market needs.

“I feel customers are really going to appreciate the aesthetic benefits of this product and how it truly replicates a timber door.

“Kubu is likewise going to be a game changer; the future is here, and it is exciting!

“It’s exactly what we should provide our customers as standard.”

Shauna Brett, Marketing Manager at Emerald Windows & Doors, confirms:

“The anticipation of what would be revealed by Comp Door was exciting, and the whole day from start to finish did not disappoint.

“The new products are incredible, and the ability to offer my customers a door with so much value-added and real quality puts me on a different level.

“My homeowners will love this new SleekSkin door finish and will be blown away by all of the other innovations built into Comp Doors as standard going forward.”

New Whitepaper by Jeld-Wen Reveals Security Concerns in Student Accommodation

As students settle into their accommodation following the start of the academic year, JELD-WEN, the UK’s leading door manufacturer, has released a new whitepaper titled “New Lessons in Keeping Students Safer.” The paper reveals security concerns in student accommodation across the UK.

Following a survey of 1,000 UK students, JELD-WEN’s research found that:
  • 90% of students feel safe in their current accommodation, yet 36% have experienced or know someone who experienced a break-in in the past year.
  • 42% of students admit that the communal entrance door to their housing is left unlocked during the day or overnight.
  • Almost half (47%) of students assume the communal entrance door to their student housing provides enough security, so they don't need to keep their individual room entrance door locked.
  • 22% of students feel the entrance door to their individual dwelling does not offer adequate security.
  • 27% of students say their landlord had not upgraded door security following a break-in.

The whitepaper also explores some of the challenges and barriers to improving security in student housing, including cost considerations for housing providers, installation issues, and a lack of awareness among students about security best practice.

To address the pressing need for a sharpened focus on the role of door security in the student setting, JELD-WEN proposes several recommendations in its whitepaper, including:
  • The introduction of new regulation which establishes the minimum security standards that all student accommodations must meet;
  • A legal requirement for all doorset installations and maintenance work to be conducted by qualified installers, validated through a UKAS-accredited certification scheme, and
  • The Golden Thread approach – now ingrained within the fire door safety category – to be more widely applied to security aspects of doorsets to build better traceability, accountability and trust
Glyn Hauser, R&D Senior Group Manager at JELD-WEN, commented:
“Going to university is a rite of passage, and no student should have this important life experience derailed by a break-in, which can be both financially and emotionally traumatic. While there is no silver bullet solution to burglary risk, our research shows that there is clearly more we can do to mitigate the scale of breaches occurring in the student setting.
“In line with the recommendations presented in our paper, we believe that by implementing a standardised approach to door security and promoting greater awareness, we can reduce the security risks facing students more effectively.”
As part of its recommendations, the whitepaper also highlights how selecting the right doorset, supplied by a reputable and accredited manufacturer, is helping student housing providers to improve safety for students within their accommodation.

Lisa Ward, Product Line Manager at JELD-WEN, said:
"Doorsets can not only save time and resource when it comes to installation – due to being fully assembled in the factory and arriving to the site ready to be hung – but they can also be specified in their entirety to meet various performance requirements, including those that reduce noise and the risk of theft, fire or intruders.
"Being pre-assembled, doorsets require less dependency on the joiner’s expertise, are more reliable and reduce the risk of errors as everything is tested, certified and guaranteed to be compatible. Choosing the correct doorset is an easy and effective way to better protect students from the risk of a domestic burglary.”
