JELD-WEN signposts sector-specific standards to support ease of specification

Leading UK manufacturer of high-quality timber doorsets, JELD-WEN UK, has launched a new brochure to support easier specification across a range of market sectors – and to highlight its commitment to sustainability.

The brochure has been designed to provide specifiers and contractors with all the information they need in one place across a range of sector-specific uses, including education, hospitality, healthcare, residential settings, student accommodation and offices.

Recognising the increased importance of a demonstrated ESG policy in the supply chain, the brochure also clearly sets out the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Taking a top-level view, the brochure sets out all the key factors needed to specify doors in each setting, clearly signposting performance testing for standards including acoustics, fire resistance, durability and security – as well as guarantee details and fire door data tagging capability.

Further to highlighting the testing needed for use in a particular sector, the brochure flags up the additional technical expertise offered by JELD-WEN to support accurate specification at the earliest stage of a project, including QR links to the NBS specification platform and CPD training.

Breaking down the qualities of the door by project application, the brochure also includes details such as DDA compliance, Part M compliance, access control, and bespoke sizing.

Taking a closer look at JELD-WEN’s sustainability commitments, the brochure sets out key targets, and benchmarks the company’s performance in meeting these.

The brochure also details how the company can support compliance under the Building Safety Act through third party certification and the use of its recently launched fire door data pin, which is embedded into fire doorsets to store vital information to evidence the golden thread through the product’s lifetime.

Marketing Manager at JELD-WEN UK Amy Holmes said:

“The doorsets created by JELD-WEN are tested to incredibly high standards and meet the demands of a range of settings. We wanted a platform that could really showcase the breadth of this offering.

“Using standout graphics and lists, we aim to show at a glance how JELD-WEN doors meet the highest standards to allow for confident specification in sectors that require specific testing to be demonstrated.

“The demand for accessible data and information has become increasingly urgent and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for specifiers to find a doorset that meets the needs of their project – and we have flagged up the depth of support we offer beyond that initial specification.

“JELD-WEN is committed to meeting the very highest standards in performance and we are delighted to be able to bring this together in one place to show the range of applications that our doorsets can confidently be used in.”

Download the new interior doorsets brochure today at www.jeld-wen.co.uk/literature.

Zoo Hardware introduces contemporary new additions to the Rosso Tecnica range

Leading architectural hardware supplier, Zoo Hardware has introduced a new range of minimalism inspired, premium aesthetic roses and accessories to its popular Rosso Tecnica range of European-inspired designer door levers.

Building upon the collection’s clean and contemporary design language, the new mini roses bring a more minimalist and premium aesthetic, thanks to their almost invisible appearance.

Plus, the new mini roses are easily mixed and matched with levers across the Rosso Tecnica range, thanks to their innovative two-part magnetic design, creating a more custom look that is ideal for high-end residential projects.

Also new is an industry-first 4mm slim sprung rose tested to BS EN 1906 – Grade 3, offering a more contemporary aesthetic for commercial applications, such as hospitals, offices and public spaces.

Completing the new additions are extensions to the range for commercial projects: larger accessible turns, delivering improved operation for users with limited dexterity, and new indicator window options with red/white indicators, improving the clarity of the door lock status for those with visual impairments.

Manufactured from Grade 304 stainless steel, selected for its high corrosion resistance, durability and hardness properties, all products within the Rosso Tecnica collection have been specifically designed to offer exceptional performance in domestic and commercial settings.

Jack Burford, Product Development Designer at Zoo Hardware, said:

“Our flagship Rosso Tecnica collection epitomises the Zoo design philosophy – contemporary, cutting edge and customer-led.

“With these new additions, we have enhanced Rosso Tecnica’s  suitability for both residential and commercial projects, opened up exciting new customisation options, and extended the minimalist look beyond the lever to the rose too.

“Rosso Tecnica continues to set the benchmark for superior performance, designer hardware that works across residential and commercial projects.”

The Rosso Tecnica collection features six contemporary lever designs as part of a fully suited range that includes hinges, door closers, escutcheons, turn and releases, flush bolts and more, offering a comprehensive and cohesive solution for interior spaces.

Designed to align with and elevate interior design trends, Rosso Tecnica levers and accessories are available in a variety of finishes, including luxurious PVD Satin Brass and Bronze and contemporary Powder Coated Matt Black and White.

Introducing the E-GDO-1000: The Next Generation in Garage Door Operators

Meet the E-GDO-1000, a garage door operator that combines power, modern design, and cutting-edge technology to enhance both functionality and aesthetics.

Why choose the E-GDO-1000?

The E-GDO-1000 is a significant upgrade from the previous Black Edition, delivering enhanced performance and user convenience. Key improvements include:

  • Increased Power: A robust 1000Nm torque, outperforming the Black Edition’s 800Nm for superior lifting capability.
  • Smart Connectivity: Built-in WiFi compatibility enables direct control via an app on smart devices, eliminating the need for an additional WiFi hub. The E-GDO-1000 can also be operated with our new compatible 4-button hand transmitters.
  • Brighter Lighting: A powerful 14,000-lumen courtesy light ensures improved illumination for added safety and convenience. *Lumen output is subject to surrounding light pollution.
The E-GDO-1000 boasts a sleek, modern design. With its geometric courtesy light, this operator improves visibility and adds a sophisticated touch to any garage.

Designed with innovation in mind, it seamlessly aligns with Ellard’s commitment to progress and quality.

What About the Black Edition?

We spoke with Lee Smith, Ellard's Head of Commercial, to hear his insights on our next steps:

“The Black Edition has long been a valuable part of Ellard’s portfolio given its quality, trusted reputation within the industry and with a proven track record.

“However, as our approach to product development evolves, even incremental improvements are now carefully considered and actioned.

“Customer feedback highlighted a desire for built-in Wi-Fi, simplifying app-based installation and control, along with a brighter courtesy light for improved visibility.

“We saw this as an opportunity to refine an already trusted product, ensuring it met the evolving needs of installers and end-users alike.”

Ellard understands that the Black Edition has been a popular choice, and they remain committed to supporting their loyal customers.

  • The Black Edition will continue to be offered until the remaining stock is sold out.
  • After this date, Ellard will officially retire the Black Edition, making way for the future with the E-GDO-1000.

The Product Development Process

Lee Smith shared the process that they underwent:

“To bring these enhancements to life, we followed our New Product Introduction (NPI) process, assembling a multi-disciplinary team to uphold our quality standards, affordability, and user interface/ease.

“The challenge wasn’t just adding features but integrating them seamlessly, keeping the installation process as straightforward as possible.

“Wi-Fi-enabled openers already exist, but we wanted to improve usability.

“Instead of requiring installers or end-users to attach a separate Wi-Fi dongle or card, we embedded the functionality directly into the controller - eliminating extra steps and reducing setup complexity.

“We also upgraded the courtesy light, ensuring better illumination for added convenience and safety.

“While our strength lies in sourcing and innovation, the naming process presented its own challenges.

“ Many ideas were considered (some more entertaining than others…), but ultimately, simplicity won out, leading to the E-GDO-1000.”

E = (Ellard) - GDO = (Garage Door Opener) - 1000 = (working capacity in Newtons)

“The result of our efforts? A product that doesn’t just meet expectations but exceeds them.

“The vigorously tested E-GDO-1000 Garage Door Opener is now smarter, more user-friendly, and future-ready, all while maintaining the trusted performance that our customers rely on.

“At Ellard, we remain committed to evolving with our customers—listening, innovating, and delivering solutions that matter.

“The E-GDO-1000’s enhancements aren’t just upgrades; they’re a testament to our commitment to smarter, more efficient solutions for the industry.”

This transition marks a new era for garage door operators at Ellard.

The E-GDO-1000 embodies strength, innovation, and user-friendly advancements, ensuring that its customers receive only the best in automated solutions.

The E-GDO-1000 will be ready for order from the 1st of March.

Keep an eye out over the coming days for more information on the Ellard website and social media channels or if you have any questions, please contact the sales team.

Get ready to elevate your garage.

Maserati completes GranCabrio range at The I.C.E. St Moritz

World premieres of new 490-CV GranCabrio and one-of-a-kind GranCabrio Trofeo ONE of ONE – THE I.C.E.

The Maserati GranCabrio range is the leading light at The I.C.E. St Moritz where, on Friday 21 February 2025, the GranCabrio was presented in its new 490-CV version.

Already available on the GranTurismo that completes the range, this engine combines the performance and comfort characteristic of the coupé version with the option of driving in the open air.

Also unveiled was the one-of-a-kind GranCabrio Trofeo ONE of ONE – THE I.C.E.,designed as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme.

GranCabrio, Maserati's luxury cabriolet, also with an output of 490 CV

The spirit of the open-air ‘Italian grand tourer’ and the performance typical of the Modena brand are the leading lights in an extremely comprehensive offering, the broadest ever proposed for the Maserati convertible.

It is now available both with the TWIN TURBO combustion engine in the 490-CVversions and in the 550-CV Trofeo version, and with the 100% electric Folgore powertrain.

At The I.C.E, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and the most famous frozen lake in the Engadin region of Switzerland, the GranCabrio on display features Verde Giada body colour, black brake callipers, 20” (front) and 21” (rear) wheels with Crio (Imola) diamond-cut gloss black design.

The interior is in ice-coloured perforated full-grain leather, with the Maserati Trident logo embroidered on the headrest.

The specifications of the model on display – Sonus faber high premium sound system with 19 speakers – is complemented by 3D carbon-fibre finishes and adaptive full LED headlights with a dark finish.

This version of the GranCabrio is a style icon and the perfect interpreter of the purest performance thanks to refined details such as the retractable soft top, to enjoy the best open-air experience, space for four true seats with the comfort required even for long journeys, whereas the 490-CV 3.0-litre V6 Nettuno Twin Turbo enables the car to reach 300 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds.

As with the Trofeo, the 490-CV also comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard and air suspension, to ensure the utmost performance without sacrificing comfort in full ‘granturismo’ spirit, even in the open air.

Maserati always focuses every decision-making process on the customer and the entire GranCabrio range is only one example of this: to fulfil the wishes of the most discerning, the colour palette has been revamped and extended with a particular elegance, as in hues such as Verde Giada.

Plus, to satisfy more sporty customers, from March orders will be open at the Trident's official dealer network for the new Sports Exhaust, providing the GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo range with purer and more adrenaline-fuelled sounds, to emphasise some of the brand's iconic features: the unmistakable sound and racing DNA.

GranCabrio Trofeo ONE of ONE – THE I.C.E.

Maserati is synonymous with Italian luxury around the world and to epitomise this concept at 2025’s The I.C.E St Moritz, the special GranCabrio Trofeo ONE of ONE – THE I.C.E. has been unveiled, as an exclusive car created as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme.

Dedicated to winter charm, the GranCabrio Trofeo ONE of ONE – THE I.C.E. features a customised exterior in an exclusive body colour created specifically, known as Ice Liquid tri-coat, a rich and refined three-layer paint that brings to mind the setting of the frozen lake on which the car was unveiled to the public for the first time.

To complete the exterior, specific badges and contrasting side air intakes in Gloss White finish, as well as forged wheels with Astreo design, paired with gloss blue brake callipers.

To finish off the customisation, the Blue Marine soft top, which opens to reveal the beautiful ice-coloured leather interior and 3D touch carbon-fibre finishes.

Maserati features at THE I.C.E. 2025

The House of the Trident is the leading light at one of the most glamorous events in the winter season.
Snowy landscapes, glamour and engines.

The I.C.E. is not only a competition, it is a unique event of its kind, combining culture, entertainment and driving in extreme conditions, serving as an unmissable opportunity for car enthusiasts, collectors and mere fans of the automotive world.

Maserati has ‘broken the ice’ by shining the spotlights on its range, in the spirit of ‘Italian grand touring’ and the Trident's performance.

GranTurismo and GranCabrio, with all-wheel drive as standard in all versions, are the protagonists on snowy roads and in driving activities on ice, combining performance and uncompromising driving pleasure even in the most difficult conditions.

Grecale has invaded the streets of St Moritz, whereas the MCXtrema and the new Maserati GT2 Stradale are on display to emphasise the brand's racing and competitive DNA.

Finally, when it comes to vintage cars, a Maserati 6CM and a Maserati 200 SI are taking part in the International Concours of Elegance.

Hire Association Europe (HAE) backs Lithium-ion Battery Safety Bill and launches safety awareness initiative

Hire Association Europe & Event Hire Association (HAE EHA) is publicly backing the Lithium-ion Battery Safety Bill, calling for increased awareness and education to save lives and reduce risk of fires, as it launches a vital safety initiative for the hire industry, targeting those handling lithium-ion batteries.

The Lithium-ion Battery Safety Bill aims to make provision regarding the safe storage, use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.

It was introduced in July 2024 and is currently at Committee Stage in the House of Lords.

HAE EHA will be sharing best practice videos and infographics on its website and social media to educate users on how to store and use these batteries correctly, as well as what to do should a fire break out.

HAE EHA members will also be able to access a more detailed resource pack as part of their membership.

Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular type of rechargeable battery provided for use in power tools and equipment, for example; cordless drills, grinders, saws, garden tools etc, as well as e-bikes and scooters, and mobile phones.

These batteries have a high energy density, meaning they can store a large amount of energy in a small volume and support high power demands.

Though generally safe, lithium-ion batteries can become fire risks due to improper use or damage, and enter a state called ‘thermal runaway’ where the battery enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state which can lead to a fire.

It has been reported that UK fire services attended 921 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in 2023, a 46 per cent increase on 2022’s figures, with almost three fires a day involving these batteries[1].

HAE EHA is an industry-leading trade association for the plant, tool, equipment and event hire sectors with membership representing businesses from new startups to some of Europe’s largest hire companies.

It has over 700 member companies based in the UK, Europe and across other parts of the world.

Carl Bartlett, director of certification services at HAE EHA, said:

“We don’t want any more people to be hurt as a result of poor use or poor storage of lithium-ion batteries.

“There are too many avoidable instances where we believe better education about how to handle these batteries could save lives and livelihoods.

“Companies in the hire industry hiring out these devices need to be able to properly inform their customers and teams about how to safely use, transport, store and report any issues about their lithium-ion batteries.

“If these new resources can help avoid even one fire, their job has been done.”

HAE EHA’s advice for the safe handling of lithium-ion batteries includes:

  • Before using the equipment, always read the manufacturer’s instruction manual.
  • Be careful not to drop batteries or use them as hammers, impact and penetration can cause leakage, heat generation, smoke, fire or explosions.

  • Keep batteries away from other metal objects. Screws, nails, washers or other similar objects can short the terminals on the battery. Always use a suitable carry case.
  • Do not touch the battery poles with your fingers, tools or any other electrically conductive objects.

  • Keep batteries away from rain, moisture, salts and other corrosive materials.
  • Don’t expose batteries to elevated temperatures, sparking or open flames, or direct sunlight behind glass.
  • Do not incinerate batteries.
  • Do not disassemble batteries.

  • Only use chargers recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Never use or charge a battery that has suffered impact or been damaged in any way.

It wants its members to be the best they can, so it provides a range of products and services including terms and conditions, legal advice, training, publicity, safety checks, guidance documents and financial services.

In focus: Door closers

Rob Adams, technical manager for ARRONE, provides the latest updates about the ARRONE door closer offering and shares best practice guidance for making sure door closers comply with the latest safety standards.

Door closers play a key role in balancing fire safety and accessibility so it’s crucial that the right product is specified, properly installed and maintained.

To conform to BS EN 1154, the British-European standard for door closer performance, the smallest door closer that can be used on a fire door is a size 3.

The heavier the door, the more powerful the closer must be. The smallest size 3 is up to 60kg and 950mm wide and the largest size 7 up to 160kg and 1600mm wide.

Electromagnetic closer

If a fire door must be kept open, for instance, because it is in a high traffic area, then the use of an overhead electromagnetic door closing device would provide a safe solution.

This type of closer will allow the door to be held open, making it easier for people to move through the building, but will automatically close the door when the fire alarm is triggered.

The recently launched AR6409B electromagnetic closer from ARRONE is now available in stainless steel effect as well as silver.

Overhead surface-mounted closer

This is one of the most cost-effective and widely used on the market.

It is sometimes known as a Rack and Pinion closer and is generally fitted to the head of a door.

Power adjustment can be achieved in two ways: by fitting position or adjusting the spring power to control the door closing speed.

Depending on the closers category of use they can provide controlled closing of a door from 105 degrees (category three) up to 180 degrees (category four).

The AR1500 door closer category has recently been upgraded from three to four.

It is particularly suited to applications on doors where optimum clear opening widths are a key requirement such as hospital corridors.

Door closer inspection best practice

To ensure a robust inspection of door closers, there are some key areas that need to be considered including proper positioning and secure attachment to the door and frame; checking for any damage; ensuring the closer allows the door to open and close in a controlled manner; checking all screws and fixings are still tightly in place; and looking for any signs of leaking fluid.

The impact of faulty door closers on doors

When a door closer doesn’t function properly, it directly impacts the performance of the fire door. Faulty door closers can result in doors:

  • Not latching correctly when opened to 5 degrees or 75mm
  • Taking too long to close – within 25 seconds is considered best practice
  • Not easily opening by up to at least 70 degrees

Help is at hand

The ARRONE range caters for a variety of power sizes, suitable to meet requirements for all building types.

In addition to overhead and electromagnetic closers, the ARRONE range also features concealed overhead closers, Cam-Action door closers and floor springs.

ARRONE has a series of videos covering the installation and maintenance of the AR1500 and can be found on the HOPPE YouTube channel.

dormakaba Releases New RIBA Approved CPD

Leading provider of security and access solutions dormakaba has launched a new RIBA accredited CPD, which offers valuable insight into BS EN 13637 electronically controlled escape doors.

The hour-long face-to-face session will focus on the relevant legislation and explain how to overcome the challenges of balancing safety and security when planning emergency exit door installation.

The comprehensive RIBA approved CPD titled ‘BS EN 13637 Electrically controlled emergency exit systems’ is the latest addition to dormakaba’s portfolio of educational sessions aimed at supporting planners, architects, consultants and designers with the tools and resources to make informed, safe and compliant specifications.

Designed to meet the required topics under RIBA’s core curriculum, the new CPD provides an in-depth overview of emergency exit doors and the challenges of balancing safety and security for buildings and their occupants.

The seminar provides guidance on managing the requirements of safety and security and informs delegates on the key features and specification considerations when designing and implementing an electronically controlled emergency exit system.

Crucially, it explains the requirements of EN 13637 for electrically controlled exit systems for use on escape doors and how to achieve a safe and compliant system.

The session is ideal for architects and planners, consultants, facilities managers, health and safety professionals, and anyone involved in ensuring fire safety.

Participants can schedule a date and time that is convenient for an on site presentation of the CPD which is delivered by one of dormakaba’s technical specialists.

Iain Jones, Head of Specification and Development at dormakaba UK and Ireland said:

“Emergency exit systems are vital and save lives every day, making it imperative that they are specified for every project correctly.

“However, one of the key issues is when doors form part of an escape route which need to prevent unauthorised access and to be secured with an electrically controlled locking system.

“Our new CPD explains how to achieve this whilst complying with the relevant standards.

“This CPD forms part of the exemplary technical support dormakaba provides its customers which includes a free design service with BIM drawings and tailored support and application advice from our Technical Sales and Service team.”

dormakaba is a worldwide leading company in the access solutions market, offering a comprehensive portfolio of products and services for security and access.

With over a hundred years of experience in the industry, dormakaba is passionate about providing innovative solutions to security whilst keeping people safe.

Squire inigma smart access control system awarded highest BSI Kitemark™ certification for Secure Digital Applications

Squire locks has accomplished a world first in achieving level 3 for Secure Digital Applications (SDA), the highest possible grade, which no other system or product has ever achieved.

inigma, the smart wireless access control system from Squire has achieved the highest BSI Kitemark™ level for SDA in recognition of its outstanding security.

As the pinnacle of quality assurance, the BSI Kitemark™ is awarded to products that meet the most stringent performance standards.

The award testifies that the inigma system has undergone rigorous, independent testing to ensure that it is one of the most robust systems on the market.

The demanding standard reviews the whole design process and tests everything from server software and software on the app to the firmware in the lock and electronics.

John Squire, CEO at Squire, comments:

“We’re proud that our inigma system has been awarded level 3 for Secure Digital Applications, the highest BSI Kitemark™ certification in its class and something no one else in the world has achieved, setting it apart from all other systems on the market.

“This reassures our customers that it has withstood the most advanced testing currently available and maintains a high level of resilience to modern methods of attack.

“In fact, it is far safer for businesses to secure themselves with the inigma system than with traditional keys, which can be subject to unauthorised key copying, as well as easily lost and potentially falling into the wrong hands.

“Access control systems, like inigma, provide users with clear audit trails, as well as the ability to issue and revoke keys with changing staff or access needs.”

inigma is a smart wireless access control system, harnessing Bluetooth communication, that allows users to control access to their locks and smart keys via the inigma app on their phone or tablet.

Businesses that use the system can control which locks users can open, easily give and revoke access, and inspect comprehensive audit trails to see who has entered which areas and when.

One of the reasons inigma is the first and only system to achieve the highest level under the BSI Kitemark™ for Secure Digital Applications is due to its data handling.

Unlike newer brands to the world of smart locks and access control, Squire’s pedigree is in security, not data processing therefore all its products focus on keeping customers safe not mining data.

inigma does not collect or store personal data, and any data that is in transit, such as the permission needed to open locks and audit data is protected by AES 256, which ensures that sensitive data remains unreadable.

Multi-factor authentication and the utilisation of the mobile OS’s security features reduce the risk posed by malware or malicious apps.

Furthermore, the system is engineered to withstand tampering and reverse-engineering.

inigma is available across a range of Squire products, including euro cylinders and its formidable, high-security Stronghold® range of padlocks.

Low-cost and easy to install, the system requires no hard-wiring or expensive authorisers, meaning it can be up and running in a matter of minutes.
