The importance of physical security in data centres

Brian Sofley, Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland Door Group, discusses why physical security deserves more attention in the digital infrastructure landscape and how rethinking physical access is key to building resilience in data centres.

Data centres in the UK have a vital role in keeping the country’s digital, financial and government systems online. With 39 per cent of the UK market seeing cyber-attacks linked to physical security breaches and 31 per cent of data centres reporting unauthorised access attempts, the demand for strong security measures is growing.

In 2023, physical breaches accounted for 28 per cent of catastrophic data events, pushing data centres to invest in integrated security solutions to reduce risks and provide operational resilience. Metal theft is also a growing problem for the industry with sites being targeted repeatedly, even after cables are replaced.

Protecting against intrusion and theft

Security doors play a vital role in protecting physical boundaries of data centres as these environments often contain sensitive information, expensive infrastructure and equipment critical to national and commercial operations. A physical breach can have significant consequences, from service outages to data loss, not to mention reputational damage.

By resisting forced entry, security doors act as a deterrent as well as a physical defence. For facilities that operate with minimal staffing or those that rely on remote monitoring, a secure door can slow down or prevent unauthorised access long enough for response teams to be alerted and act. This is particularly important for sites that are not in constant use.

Security rated solutions such as ASSA ABLOY Powershield steel doors, are tested to standards including LPS 1175 and can be tailored to site specific threat levels, helping operators align physical protection with their security strategies.

Electromagnetic security

Every electronic device emits electromagnetic radiation and at data centre sites, this carries sensitive information. Leaked signals can be intercepted and exploited meaning hackers and intelligence agencies could potentially reconstruct and steal sensitive information.

A more advanced threat, known as TEMPEST attacks, involves the use of electromagnetic leaks for covert surveillance on electronic devices, making it a critical concern for data centres and other high security environments.

Shielded enclosures, such as Faraday cages, block electromagnetic signals by using conductive materials that prevent signal leakage. Electromagnetic emanation resistant doors, such as the ASSA ABLOY TEMPEST Door, are specifically designed to prevent signal escape from secure rooms.

Additionally, RF filtering and grounding helps minimise unwanted emissions from power and data lines, while TEMPEST approved equipment is engineered to reduce electromagnetic radiation and ensure compliance with security standards.

Tailored solutions for CNI

No two facilities are exactly the same and so ASSA ABLOY Door Group provides tailored solutions designed for specific operational needs and threat levels of each site.

For perimeter, plant room or operations hall use, Powershield steel doors deliver robust resistance to physical attack and reduce risk of fire spread. Internally, such as office areas or circulation corridors, Safeguard timber doors offer equally high security; and this is complimented by the SMARTec timber door range offering fire and acoustic performance, both with finishes that support environment aesthetics. For sensitive locations such as UPS rooms or generator halls, acoustic or blast rated doors provide added protection and control.

Durability

While not open to the public, doors in data centres are used constantly, particularly those within equipment rooms, corridors, plant spaces and emergency exits. This continuous usage puts stress on door hardware over time.

Durable door hardware including hinges, closers and handles are not just an asset used to avoid failure. They also maintain the protective functions doors are designed to perform, be that fire resistance, acoustic isolation or security control.

Fire safety and compliance

In data centre facilities, fire risk doesn’t just pose a threat to people and equipment. It also presents serious physical security concerns. A fire can weaken building structures, disable security systems and force emergency evacuations that can create vulnerabilities in perimeter control. If a fire door fails to perform as intended, a fire can become a point of physical compromise.

Reliable fire doors help protect escape routes and emergency access points, keeping them secure while remaining operational under threats. Regular inspections and proper maintenance are essential as if a fire door does not close fully or is warped from wear, it not only fails compliance but weakens overall site security.

Asset Management

Ensuring a traceable link between the design, specification, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance of door solutions is increasingly important in the data centre sector. In environments where uptime is essential and compliance is highly regulated, a well-documented and coordinated approach to physical infrastructure is integral for long term resilience.

ASSA ABLOY’s Openings Studio™ is a BIM software solution, that integrates with design software to create and visualise openings for complete door, frame and hardware schedules and specifications. It supports the specification process and beyond, by creating 3D models of tailored door frame and hardware solutions, which can be incorporated within the building model or viewed using the door visualisation tool.

The platform extends beyond design, offering data-driven support during manufacturing and installation. Contractors can access specifications for quality inspections, ensuring door systems are installed to meet the intended standards, reinforcing the Golden Thread and the Building Safety Act 2022, as well as supporting ongoing maintenance and operational needs.

For data centre sites where every element must perform seamlessly, using BIM to manage door systems means convenience and resilience. It also supports regulatory compliance and ensures that every decision is fully traceable and aligned with the operational priorities of the site.

JDUK Door Systems Unveils Enhanced Roller Garage Door Components

JDUK Door Systems, one of the UK’s most trusted suppliers of high-quality sectional and side hinge garage doors, and market-leading roller garage door components, proudly announces the launch of several key innovations to its roller door component range - designed to give garage door installers even more of a competitive edge.

With over 20 years of experience sourcing the world’s best garage door products, JDUK continues to set industry standards for design, durability, innovation, and performance.

New 250mm End Plate: The Perfect Solution for Limited Headroom

In line with JDUK’s ethos of continuous evolution, the company has introduced a new 250mm end plate, enhancing flexibility even further for fabricators. This new end plate enables seamless switching of guide sizes via JDUK’s unique peg adaptor system, ideal for fitting a 77mm classic roller door in garage openings with limited headroom.

Unlike competitors, JDUK supplies all end plates with guide rollers included, pre-drilled holes, and fixings provided as standard, dramatically reducing fabrication and installation time while boosting installer efficiency.

Further strengthening its roller door component offering, JDUK has launched a 1.5mm octagonal steel tube, offering greater rigidity and strength for larger door sizes compared to standard 1.2mm options. This robust solution delivers improved performance and peace of mind, especially when specifying doors for wider or taller openings.

Expanded Colour Palette Meets Growing Consumer Demand

Recognising the increasing homeowner demand for customisation, JDUK has expanded its popular 77mm insulated lath colour range with three new shades:
  • Agate Grey
  • Chartwell Green
  • Rosewood

These additions give installers even more flexibility to meet customers’ aesthetic preferences, enhancing kerb appeal and satisfaction.

Market-Leading Components Trusted by Installers Nationwide

JDUK Door Systems’ roller garage door components are trusted throughout the UK, with an estimated 30-50% of roller garage doors sold in the country using JDUK components. All products undergo rigorous testing to ensure thermal efficiency, security, durability, and resistance to weather and corrosion, providing long-lasting performance for homeowners and peace of mind for installers.

For more information contact JDUK Door Systems via sales@jdukltd.co.uk, www.jdukltd.co.uk, or call 01924 472 924.

Limited-Edition Singaporean Military G-Wagen makes Newport Debut

Arcade Cars unveiled its most exclusive vehicle yet, the dramatic open-top Mercedes-Benz 240 GD, at premier American collector car event, the Audrain Concours in October.

The ultra-limited convertible is one of only 60-70 airdrop-ready military vehicles ever produced by Mercedes-Benz for the Singaporean Army. Following a highly successful Monterey Car Week, which generated significant collector interest, the 240 GD showcases Arcade’s restoration expertise.

Only 10 bespoke examples will be built in collaboration with individual clients, making it among the world's most exclusive G-Wagens. Each vehicle retains its military features while incorporating personalised luxury features.

Arcade Cars will also be presenting their Mercedes-Benz Puch 230 GE at The Bridge, in Bridgehampton, NY. Arcade launched their 230 GE in 2024 at Pebble Beach, where they returned this August with a display in the Concours Village.

Pebble Beach

Arcade Cars made a successful first appearance at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2024, where its military-heritage G-Wagens captured the attention of collectors and automotive enthusiasts alike. The Monterey showcase established Arcade as a serious contender in the high-end restoration market and reinforced the brand’s reputation for producing authentic military-spec vehicles that combine rugged capability with luxury enhancements. Arcade Cars returned to Pebble Beach in August 2025 showcasing further diversity in their vehicle portfolio.

The Bridge debut

On Saturday, September 13th, Arcade Cars joined the exclusive line-up at The Bridge, marking a significant milestone in the company’s entry into the East Coast collector market. Held on the grounds of the historic Bridgehampton racing circuit overlooking Sag Harbor, a site synonymous with America’s rich motorsport legacy, the invitation-only gathering presents a curated collection of the continent’s finest post-war vehicles.

“Beyond being a world-class event, The Bridge allows us to connect with a market that truly appreciates both the elegance and versatility of our vehicles,” said Arcade founder Rishav Kanoria. “An Arcade G-Wagen is designed for family adventures. It combines striking design with the capability to handle everything from dunes to everyday journeys, all while providing uncompromising comfort for its passengers.”

A first for Newport

Arcade will serve as a Bespoke Sponsor of Newport's Audrain Motor Week, where their Pacific Blue open-top Mercedes-Benz 240 GD makes its formal debut along with an Arcade Racing Green Mercedes-Benz Puch 230 GE at Doris Duke's legendary Rough Point estate during Friday's Audrain Gathering. The Audrain Concours draws thousands of collectors and automotive enthusiasts to Newport's historic Gilded Age mansion lawns, making it the perfect venue to showcase the most exclusive Arcade vehicle yet.

The art of military restoration

The 240 GD represents Arcade’s most ambitious restoration, transforming battle-hardened military vehicles through a meticulous six-phase process that can take hundreds of hours per car.

1. Sourcing and evaluation

2. Sand or ice blasting

3. Welding and metalwork

4. Paint

5. Engine restoration and tuning

6. Interior recreation and modifications

Master artisans fully disassemble each vehicle, documenting every component to ensure authenticity during reassembly. The chassis undergoes extensive metalwork to repair decades of military wear, while paint specialists apply anti-corrosive treatments and premium finishes in climate-controlled facilities.

In the interior workshop, the military cabin is reimagined as a luxury environment, with options ranging from luxury automotive grade leather to adventure-ready synthetics, premium audio systems, and bespoke sports and overlanding equipment solutions. Each restoration preserves the vehicle’s original military engineering while integrating modern technology to maintain the authentic G-Wagen driving experience collectors seek.

Secure, warm or smart? What kind of doors are customers looking for today?

Modern entrance doors are no longer just about protection against cold and burglars – they have become an element of design, comfort, and intelligent home solutions. Just like industries such as automotive, telecommunications, or pharmaceuticals are evolving, so is the construction industry.

What requirements must an entrance door meet today to satisfy modern customers’ expectations? WIÅšNIOWSKI – a European leader in the production of gates, doors, windows, and fencing systems – shares its perspective and the purchasing preferences of German customers.

1. Design: Doors that match any architecture and character

The entrance door is the calling card of a house – it catches the eye and invites you in. Aesthetics play a crucial role here and are often the most important criterion for customers. WIÅšNIOWSKI clients particularly appreciate the CREO collection – minimalist, flush door leaves with the option to individually customize colors, models, and accessories. This way, the doors become an integral part of modern architecture. For those looking for a more affordable solution that still meets optimal requirements for security, thermal insulation, and design, WIÅšNIOWSKI offers the NOVA and NOBE models.

2. Thermal insulation: Energy efficiency starts at the doorstep

With rising energy costs, thermal insulation has become one of the key parameters – especially in Germany, a pioneer in implementing European regulations on building insulation aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions. WIÅšNIOWSKI offers models with a heat transfer coefficient (Ud) as low as 0.8 W/m²K – ensuring noticeable savings and year-round thermal comfort. Modern doors are therefore “warm,” airtight, and capable of keeping heat inside even during cold winters.

3. Smart: Doors that thinking for you

Today, modern construction is inseparable from smart solutions. For particularly demanding users, WIÅšNIOWSKI offers intelligent door models – PIRUE, CREO, and NOVA – equipped with the Autotronic or Multitronic io electric lock. With smartCONNECTED technology, the door can be integrated into the home system along with the garage door, roller shutters, or lighting – all controlled through a single app.

In practice, this means you can schedule when the door opens or grant remote access to guests. The system is based on the TaHoma® Switch hub, which allows control of door functions via a mobile app, buttons, or voice commands. This is an ideal solution for anyone already using devices with ZigBee 3.0 or io-homecontrol technology, creating a functional smart home ready for the future.

When is it worth choosing a smart door?

This solution is ideal for modern investments – German customers most often choose it for single-family houses with smart-home systems, but as the manufacturer highlights, many models have also been installed in commercial buildings and offices. These doors are suitable wherever comfort, prestige, security, and smart-home compatibility are important. Thanks to their high insulation and tightness, smart doors also contribute to energy savings and eliminate weak points in the structure (e.g., traditional mechanical cylinders).

Additionally, customers value extra “intelligent” features such as:
  • Keyless access – open the door remotely, for example, when the children return from school or when you want to let the delivery person in.
  • Security and control – check whether the doors are locked and receive notifications about any status changes.
  • Automation – create scenarios such as automatic locking when leaving the house or unlocking when approaching the property.
  • Ease of use – a quiet mechanism and simple opening/closing – especially important for children, seniors, and people with reduced mobility.
  • Integrated ecosystem – with the TaHoma® Switch hub, doors can be linked with lighting, alarms, roller shutters, or garage doors.

Doors that combine form, function, and technology

The entrance doors of the 21st century must meet numerous requirements – in terms of aesthetics, functionality, and digitalization. WIÅšNIOWSKI demonstrates that design, energy efficiency, and intelligent control can go hand in hand – delivering doors that perfectly suit modern homes and their residents.

Minimalist Hardware, Maximum Impact

Though minimalistic in design, sliding door hardware can have a lasting impact on contemporary projects, says David Knollman, Brio business development manager at Allegion UK.

Open plan layouts, sleek aesthetics and seamless indoor and outdoor integration have become compelling features of modern building design. Sliding doors are a symbol of these highly sought after characteristics, with many design-conscious decision makers continuing to gravitate towards them, and for good reason.

Typically constructed of large panels, sliding door applications are naturally stylish, with minimalist designs offering slim profiles, clean finishes and sophisticated points of access. These visual rewards are quickly recognised in any setting, and when paired with functional space-saving abilities, improved flow of movement and maximised natural light, it’s clear to see why sliding doors can add considerable value to spaces.

The simple practicality of sliding door designs runs much deeper than the panels themselves, however. Whilst often overlooked, choosing the right sliding door hardware is crucial to both the performance and longevity of the door application itself. With that in mind, there are two primary sliding door systems that decision makers must consider when selecting sliding door hardware.

Top hung systems are designed to suspend the door from a concealed track above the panel, creating a floating appearance and offering users a smooth, quiet operation. In contrast, bottom rolling systems support the weight of panels from below and are more suitable for situations where overhead structural support is limited, such as older buildings or retrofit applications.

Door hardware finishes play a crucial role in design decisions also. As many look to add a level of elegance to their project, matte black and brushed metal finishes are increasingly in demand. Where decision makers may turn to a brushed metal finish in support of understated aesthetics, the striking popularity of matte black can help elevate the visual appearance of handles and bolts for example, signing a project off with a bold statement.

Whether refining a residential property or redesigning a commercial environment, the visual and functional desire to extend space can be achieved with simple and effective sliding door systems. By considering the requirements of a space, and with careful hardware selection, sliding door applications may be measured as more than a simple design detail - instead they become influential to the space and the people within it.

Automation Nation or Country in Stagnation?

Neil Evans, Managing Director at VEKA plc – a leading supplier of PVCu window and door systems, employing over 450 people in Burnley, Lancashire.

The UK manufacturing sector fell out of the top 10 global manufacturing nations last year and has remained 12th through mid-2025, down from 8th in 2023, according to Make UK. To regain a top-10 spot, the body says we need to first grow the sector from 10% to 15% of GDP. That’s a big ask without bold action.

At the same time, the UK is also one of the least automated advanced economies in the world. The International Federation of Robotics ranks the UK at 24th globally in robot density, with just 111 units per 10,000 employees. Germany, by comparison, deploys more than 370. South Korea and Singapore have raced even further ahead. This discrepancy shows the need for greater automation to remain competitive in an increasingly automated global market.

The Government’s ‘Modern Industrial Strategy’ – which is central to Labour’s number one mission of growth – is ambitious. It promises £4.3 billion in funding for advanced manufacturing, alongside a broader £86 billion R&D commitment. The vision is that by 2035, the UK will double annual business investment in the sector from £21 billion to £39 billion, becoming the best place in the world to start, grow and invest in manufacturing.

But while talks of AI, digital twins and industrial robotics dominate Westminster, those running factory floors across the UK are asking more basic questions. Who will help me de-risk automation? Who will support me through process redesign? And who will fix my system if it breaks?

The reality on the UK’s factory floors

Let’s not pretend automation is easy. Much of what’s available today is technically feasible but practically unproven in the specific contexts that matter to businesses like ours at VEKA. Off-the-shelf automation doesn’t really exist yet. Most automation systems require bespoke design, iteration and integration. And bespoke often translates into expensive, unsupported and hard to scale.

It’s not that we don’t want to automate and take on the future with both hands. It’s that, right now, we aren’t going to throw ourselves into a high-risk system with no obvious ROI and no one to call when it breaks. It’s one thing to simulate a production loop on paper. It’s quite another to bolt it into a 50-year-old building and expect it to work.

There’s also the opportunity for change. If we automated what we do now, all we’d be doing is making the wrong things more efficient. For automation to truly succeed, we need to focus on process redesign and rebuilding workflows from the ground up.

Are people not needed?

There’s also a perception that increased automation equals redundancy. But that’s a narrow view. In my opinion, the best automation transformation will reallocate human effort to more rewarding, higher-value roles. For example, automating the movement of goods across a site not only boosts efficiency but also improves health and safety and allows skilled staff to focus on more technical work.

But change like this takes trust, open and honest communication and retraining. Especially when 25% of your operations workforce is under 30, and many of them don’t see manufacturing as a long-term career. Retention is tough. And if your experienced team walks out before younger employees are fully trained, the skills gap only widens.

Are we moving too slowly?

The Manufacturing Technology Centre estimates that if the UK matched the automation levels of top-performing countries, productivity could rise by more than 22%. For a country struggling to surpass 2% annual GDP growth, that’s a game-changing uplift. Yet our risk appetite hasn’t kept pace.

As a country we like to say we’re fast followers. But truthfully? We’re slow followers. And our risk aversion is causing the gap to widen.

Government support must go beyond white papers to truly address the blockers to automation and de-risk roll-out. Centres of excellence like the AMRC and MTC offer part of the answer, but too many manufacturers still operate in silos, unaware of what’s available or unsure how to engage. Manufacturers need hands-on, practical support, such as guidance on process redesign, funding, and access to training programs that ensure people, not just machines, are at the heart of the transformation.

If the UK is to reassert itself as a global manufacturing power, we need to see real-world support that brings strategy to the shop floor, funding tied to process redesign and automation that enables people, not replaces them.

Q by Aston Martin celebrates 60 years of Volante with exclusive anniversary editions

At the pinnacle of Aston Martin’s open-top range, Vanquish Volante commands attention with its formidable 5.2-litre V12 twin-turbo engine. Delivering an extraordinary 835PS and 1000Nm of torque, it propels this two-seater to a breathtaking top speed of 214 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.

The fastest and most powerful convertible production Aston Martin to date, Vanquish Volante is the zenith of raw performance and presence - designed for those who demand uncompromising exhilaration and exclusivity.

Powered by a hand-built 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo, the 2+2 seat DB12 Volante redefines what it means to be a grand tourer. Producing 680PS and 800Nm of torque, it strikes an uncompromising balance between pulsating dynamism, unmatched ride comfort, and ultra-luxury refinement. With a top speed of 202 mph and 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, DB12 Volante is an icon of versatility and sophistication - crafted for those who seek both breathtaking performance and everyday usability in an open-top masterpiece.

The Volante name was first introduced in 1965 with a model now known as the ‘Short Chassis Volante’- one of the rarest Aston Martin’s ever produced, with just 37 being built in a single year. Since the inception of Volante, the name has been applied to several Aston Martin convertibles – for those who seek the sensory thrills of roof-down driving.

Vanquish and DB12 Volante both benefit from lightweight K-fold roofs, exceptionally designed with brilliant packaging solutions to maximise luggage capacity, refinement, swift operation and stunning aesthetics. Operation for opening takes just 14 seconds and closing completes in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph.

Both models house a unique specification created by Aston Martin’s bespoke service, Q by Aston Martin. Inspired by the rich heritage of the British marque, the Editions showcase unparalleled artistry through design, rare materials and elegant finishes.

Finished in Q Pentland Green paint with a Q Westminster Green hood, the exterior of the 60th Anniversary of Volante Editions are defined by quiet confidence and meticulous detail. Anodised bronze accents punctuate the silhouette, creating a car that doesn’t just honour six decades of Volante - it leads its class with undeniable presence and elegance.

Commanding attention at first glance, the iconic Aston Martin vaned grille is reimagined in anodised bronze. Perfectly honed and unmistakably Aston Martin, it serves as both a visual centrepiece and a vital performance element, channelling airflow with precision. This is Q design at its most expressive, formidable in presence, unflinching in purpose and unmistakably Q by Aston Martin.

Bold in stance and engineered for performance, the exclusive 21" Q wheels make a commanding statement. Finished in satin bronze with diamond-turned edges, they strike the perfect balance between strength and sophistication. Complemented by black Aston Martin branded brake calipers, they project a declaration of intent that reinforces the Editions’ sporting pedigree.

The bronze theme continues with the iconic Aston Martin side strake. Precision-milled from solid billet aluminium and anodised, it’s more than a visual statement - it’s a masterstroke of form and function from Q by Aston Martin. Drawing air from the front wheel arches to reduce lift and enhance high-speed stability, this finely engineered feature speaks to both performance and pedigree. A mark of distinction, the enamelled Q by Aston Martin badge implies the Volante 60th Anniversary Editions are reserved for the most exclusive commissions, positioned just beneath the side strake.

Stepping inside, the Editions have exclusive tri-tone colourways – consisting of Centenary Saddle Tan, Ivory and Woven leathers in perfect balance. Combined with Dark Walnut Open Pore veneers, bronze touchpoints and bespoke 60th Anniversary embroidery and an etched and infilled seatback, these elements create a cabin of refined elegance and ultra-luxury.

Jolyon Nash, Chief Commercial Officer at Aston Martin, said: “Volante is one of Aston Martin’s most evocative names, representing six decades of the ultimate open-top driving experience. With the 60th Anniversary of Volante Editions, we’ve created a truly exclusive celebration of that legacy — bringing together the raw power of Vanquish Volante and the refined versatility of DB12 Volante in a way that speaks directly to our most discerning customers. These cars are the embodiment of rarity, performance and craftsmanship that define Q by Aston Martin.”

The in-house design and craftspeople at Q by Aston Martin are renowned for their exceptional skills to create truly bespoke Aston Martins, with the 60th Anniversary of Volante Editions serving as testaments. Offering limitless customisation opportunity, Q by Aston Martin invites customers to embark on a distinct commissioning experience, where every detail from subtle accents to fully tailored components can be designed to their exact specifications. The possibilities are endless from the dedicated team, ensuring no request is too ambitious.

Those interested in commissioning their bespoke Aston Martin and utilising the Q by Aston Martin services may enquire further with their local Aston Martin dealership.

Strictly limited to 60 examples of each model, deliveries for the 60th Anniversary of Volante Editions will commence in Q4 2025.
