Introducing the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Reimagined by Singer

“By the mid-1980’s the personalisation Porsche first offered for the Carrera Coupe had reached the Carrera Cabriolet, which could be ordered with the wider body of the 911 Turbo but powered by the company’s latest, naturally aspirated flat six. Our services reference this car and celebrate another chapter in the evolution of the 911, with the ultimate, open-roof, naturally aspirated G model 911, reimagined for the twenty-first century. The sporting nature of the Carrera led us to reappraise the period roof mechanism to reduce weight and enable a sleek profile with the roof raised or lowered. The remarkable flat-six brings together our learnings from the last fifteen years and can now be heard more clearly than ever.”

- Rob Dickinson: Singer’s Founder and Creative Director

The restoration process

The process begins when the owner of a Porsche 911 Cabriolet (Type 964) sends their car to Singer with the request to carry out a personalised restoration. Originally manufactured by Porsche more than thirty years ago, these sports cars have been on the road ever since, covering thousands of miles in the hands of many drivers.

The first step of the restoration involves the owner’s car being carefully disassembled. The interior is removed, as is the exterior bodywork and all mechanical components, until the steel monocoque (chassis) is revealed. The chassis is painstakingly assessed, cleaned, and prepared so that it is in optimal condition for the next stages of restoration. During this phase, chassis strengthening is applied to enhance the rigidity of the original Type 964 monocoque.

Engine and transmission

The engine in a 911 Carrera Cabriolet Reimagined by Singer draws on long experience with the 911 and learnings from the DLS program, where the company’s first four-valve cylinder head was born. This expertise allows Singer to continue exploring the performance potential of the Type 964’s iconic flat-six, on behalf of its clients, through a continuous process of careful optimisation and the development of a revised four-valve cylinder head. Singer have jointly developed the execution of this engine with Cosworth, who have deployed their unparalleled experience, specifically in the areas of variable valve timing, combustion chamber design and intake and exhaust path.

The engine is the same as that used in the Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer and represents multiple firsts. It is the first engine restored for a Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer to feature variable valve timing, optimising drivability at low speeds, and power at high revs. It is also the first naturally aspirated engine restored by Singer to use water-cooled cylinder heads combined with air-cooled cylinders, and an electrically powered fan, utilising learnings from the DLS Turbo program.

Together these features help the 4.0L flat-six to develop 420HP and broaden the torque delivery across a wider range of engine speeds, while enabling owners in a growing range of countries to restore their cars through Singer’s services.

The engine will rev to over 8000 rpm and, to encourage drivers to explore that range, an optimised, six-speed, manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels. A raised gear shifter may be specified with an exposed shift mechanism, underlining the engineering craftsmanship. A newly developed titanium exhaust system provides free breathing for the flat-six and its famous soundtrack.

Chassis

The original Type 964 monocoque remains at the heart of the car. Over the last fifteen years, on behalf of owners, Singer has invested in extensive simulation and structural analysis of this chassis. The result is a chassis strengthening system, using composite and steel reinforcement, that is applied to the monocoque at the beginning of the restoration process. Augmented with this strengthening, the chassis is an optimised foundation for each subsequent stage of the restoration, with increased torsional rigidity benefitting handling, braking and overall refinement.

Ground control

In common with the 911 Carrera cars in period, the dynamic performance of the engine is enhanced with a sophisticated approach to suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres.

Suspension developed for Singer’s turbocharged services provides the foundation for compliant, sporting handling. New, four-way adjustable dampers with electronic damping control can be adjusted from the driver’s seat and incorporate a nose lift system.

Carbon ceramic brakes developed through the DLS services may be specified, sitting behind 18” centre-lock wheels, providing deep reserves of stopping power.

Tyre technology has developed dramatically since the end of the twentieth century and the use of the latest Michelin Pilot Sport tyres allows the restored car to transmit its power effectively to the road. The driver may select from five drive modes (Road, Sport, Track, Off and Weather) to adjust the levels of intervention from the traction control and electronic stability control, depending on the road conditions and their own capabilities.

Driver-focused interior

Singer’s restoration and modification services enable owners to personalise the interior presentation of their car according to their personal preferences, through bespoke paint, leather, and material finishes. Lightweight sports or track seats may be requested, providing the perfect driving position in combination with the raised gear shifter mechanism.

In front of the driver, the familiar 911 instrument layout is reimagined, with hand-built gauges bringing high-watchmaking standards into the cabin. Singer’s mastery of traditional leatherworking techniques allows owners to request stitched and burnished leather seams throughout the cabin for the first time. Technology is incorporated with restraint, allowing for discrete navigation and phone connectivity.

Price and availability

Each restoration is unique. Every owner shares their personal preferences and requirements for bespoke engineering as part of the process of working with Singer to personalise their own 911. Prices for Singer's restoration services are dependent on the specification requested by each car’s owner. The Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Reimagined by Singer will be limited to just 75 commissions.

Data Driven Fire Door Safety

Sue Corrick of Allegion UK reviews the expanding role of digital information in building safety and how its use is transforming fire door hardware from passive fire protection to an active data source.

Data drives informed decisions, and in the built environment, the role of information is growing. Where fire safety is paramount to building design, the adoption of digital practice - combined with modern legislation - proceeds to have a greater impact on standards and is reshaping the landscape as we know it.

Before the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire, the fire door safety sector accepted a conventual approach, reliant on physical testing, manual record keeping and reactive maintenance procedures. Though, as regulations tighten and the demand for accountability and transparency heightens through updated proposals such as the Construction Products Reform Green Paper, data is now positioning itself at the heart of how modern systems are tested, monitored and maintained.

Above all, the industry must remain focused on improving the structure, quality and usability of digital handover information, in compliance with Regulation 38 and ‘Golden Thread’ requirements. The use of standardised, accessible asset data can further elevate fire safety standards and safe building operation, supporting professionals throughout the supply chain as they navigate hardware specification, installation and maintenance.

And so, as many move towards a more transparent, traceable and digitally integrated model, how does something as mechanical as a fire door closer contribute to a progressively data-reliant environment?

Strengthening certification

Testing has always existed as the foundation of fire door safety standards. Yet, the ‘Green Paper’ proposals are perhaps set to reform the testing and certification environment, with critical gaps being identified in the construction product regulatory framework.

Fire doors and their hardware components endure comprehensive fire resistance tests, durability cycle assessments and sustainability evaluations as a way of generating detailed evidence of a system’s capabilities, but much of this data is often considered inconsistent, missing or unverified.

Historically, this information has been stored in a disconnected system of paperwork, but it is now clearer than ever that testing data should be collected, saved and accessed in a different way to ensure safety claims are credible and independently verifiable.

Following almost a decade of pivotal regulatory updates, the increased governing pressure placed on building design is changing the management of construction products, and with that, third-party testing and unified, structured data files are becoming more valuable. This movement is strengthened by legislation such as the Building Safety Act, which has placed a renewed focus on competency whilst highlighting the importance of traceable, accessible product information.

This shift is altering the way fire door certification and record holding is approached, where:

· Test evidence must clearly demonstrate classifications, limitations and compatibility between components such as door closers, hinges and leaf assemblies

· Assessment reports must be transparent, retrievable and linked directly to a manufacturer’s products

· Digital record keeping is becoming essential for duty-holders, who are being held responsible for products remaining reliable and suitable throughout a project’s lifecycle

Testing data contributes to a single source of truth, made accessible through The Golden Thread of Information - a legal requirement under the Building Safety Act. The ‘Golden Thread’ has been transformative in documenting verified data and acts as an intuitive framework for how product information can be created, maintained and made accessible.

Access to this digital vault of information has become central to compliance by promoting transparency and reducing risk, with the government now proposing a centralised library for all construction products to further expand regulatory coverage and support greater decision-making.

Data makes the difference

Whilst it’s clear how testing and certification can impact product specification, perhaps less understood are the other ways in which data is helping to build a more accurate picture of the built environment and its fire safety systems. Inspection data from the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS), for example, tells us that care and maintenance issues are present in 54% of fire door inspections, reflecting the need for ongoing care post hardware specification and installation.

In truth, data is redefining the role of mechanical fire door hardware components in real time too. Take fire door closers, which are a key component of fire doors, and as such, are an important data contributor when it comes to fire door safety.

Forward-thinking manufacturers are also exploring how data can better support fire safety practice and hardware, such as door closers, can now incorporate stores of data right from the box, with video installation guides made available to installers through QR codes and safety critical data accessible via the ‘Golden Thread’. This modern approach to fire safety management is helping to eliminate guesswork and should be widely viewed as an opportunity to simplify processes for all involved.

Fire door safety will always remain a technical discipline, but in an age where information can be accessed instantly from our fingertips, even a mechanical fire door closer has a digital voice. By combining robust hardware and practical expertise with reliable, accessible data, the industry is paving its way to a safer, more accountable built environment.

ADSA strengthens UK industry voice at European standards meeting in Berlin

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has reinforced its position as the leading UK industry voice at European level following its involvement in a key meeting of CEN responsible for European standards covering powered pedestrian doors, powered turnstiles and speed lanes.

The two-day meeting of TC33/WG9 (Technical Committee 33/Working Group 9), at the DIN building in Berlin, brought together European standards bodies and industry experts to review and progress critical regulatory and safety developments affecting the sector.

Darren Hyde, ADSA’s Technical, Standards and Regulation Manager, attended representing British Standards Institution (BSI), alongside other ADSA technical committee members including David Morgan of Hotron, for the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

During the meeting, the committee received an update on the EU Construction Product Regulation (CPR) Acquis process, which will streamline the development of a new, unified performance standard for doors, windows and hatches.

Responsibility for this work will sit with CEN TC33/WG1, which will combine existing standards EN 14351-1, EN 14351-2 and EN 16361 into a single document. To safeguard the interests of the powered pedestrian door industry, Darren Hyde has joined the TC33/WG1 committee on behalf of ADSA and BSI.

A further focus of the meeting was the proposed amendment of EN 16005 and EN 17352 to align with the new EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230. The committee agreed to retain the current structure of both standards while introducing additional clauses to address the new regulatory requirements. Comments previously submitted during consultation were reviewed in detail over the two days, with agreed amendments incorporated into revised draft clauses.

The committee also considered feedback from BSI on EN 16005:2023+A1:2024, agreeing to amend section 5.8.4.1 to clarify safety distances relating to drawing-in and shearing hazards on sliding doors. The revised wording will be based on a proposal developed by Darren Hyde on behalf of BSI.

ADSA has thanked its members who work with European and national standards bodies for their support in securing this important clarification. Additional comments raised by ADSA and BSI will be considered during the next full revision of the standards.

ADSA Managing Director Ken Price highlighted the importance of ADSA members across the UK and Ireland being directly represented within European decision-making forums: “Active involvement at this level is essential. These standards directly influence how our members design, install and maintain powered pedestrian doors. By being at the table, ADSA ensures the practical realities of the UK and Irish markets are understood and reflected in European standards.”

ADSA will continue to keep members informed as developments progress, underlining its commitment to representing the industry’s interests internationally and supporting the safe, compliant operation of the powered pedestrian doors, turnstiles and speed lane industry across Europe.

Hagerty Selects Seven Hill Climb Bargains To Celebrate Launch Of 2026 Hagerty Hill Climb at Shelsley Walsh

The Hagerty Hill Climb returns to the legendary Shelsley Walsh on Saturday 9th May 2026, inviting enthusiasts to experience one of the world’s most celebrated motorsport venues. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Worcestershire countryside, Shelsley Walsh is not only among the finest hill climb courses in the UK, it is also the oldest motorsport venue in the world in continuous use, hosting competition since 1905.

Over the decades, thousands of cars have tackled the famous hill, from everyday road cars to Formula 1 machinery, driven by everyone from first-timers to motorsport icons including Sir Stirling Moss. Today, the Hagerty Hill Climb blends this rich heritage with a vibrant enthusiast atmosphere. Visitors can expect thrilling on-track action, paddock attractions, great food and drink and acres of stunning scenery, making it an unforgettable day out for enthusiasts and families alike.

Spectator tickets start from just £30 per car with an Early-bird discount available until 15th February, offering outstanding value and access to the full experience. For those wanting to go beyond watching and truly immerse themselves, entrants can drive their own car up the hill for £150, with discounts available and three guaranteed runs throughout the day. No competition experience is required and all cars are welcome, from cherished classics and hot hatches to daily drivers, simply bring your car and enjoy the thrill.

Seven Fun Performance Cars for Under £10,000

Not sure you have the right car to make the most of the event? Well, Hagerty has selected seven affordable and entertaining cars that promise maximum smiles per mile and are perfectly suited to the Shelsley Walsh course.

Mazda MX-5

Ask anyone what they would choose for a summer car to have fun with and chances are the answer will be the Mazda MX-5. These Japanese two-seaters are affordable, reliable, easy to drive and above all, fantastic fun. The third generation ‘NC’ is remarkably affordable right now, plus it has more poke than earlier models and the 2.0 litre version has a lovely six-speed gearbox.

R50/R53 Mini

The BMW Mini provides one of the best driving experiences you can have in a front-wheel drive hatchback. Its fantastic chassis, great handling and superb engines make it ideal for the Shelsley Walsh course and the Mini is remarkably affordable, with plenty of aftermarket accessories and lots of clubs to offer advice.

Seven Replica

You don’t have to buy a Lotus Seven to enjoy the thrill of this famous classic, instead why not jump into a replica, undoubtedly one of the best value cars to enjoy summer driving fun and motorsport action. You could get behind the wheel of a Locost, Westfield, Tiger, Dax or Robin Hood at a price to suit your budget and each will deliver miles of driving pleasure.

MG Midget/Austin-Healey Sprite

Old Midgets and Sprites are hugely popular classic grassroots motorsport options. They aren’t super fast, but they have almost all the characteristics you’d want in a sprint or hill climb machine: lightweight, compact, responsive, packed with feedback, and pretty solid mechanically. Basic road cars start at under five grand, and you’ll have a joyful little weekend car for that too, not just a racer.

Peugeot GTI

It’s not all about the 205 GTI you know, Peugeot had a number of models that wore the famous three letters and which today deliver great fun for great money. You might find a 106 or 205 GTI for under ten grand, but for the best value we suggest looking for a 206 GTI or a 306 GTI. The 306 is a 90s bargain right now, especially if you can find the six-speed GTI-6 while the 206 GTI is cheap as chips, even for the more powerful GTI 180.

Renault Sport Clio 197

Just as the third-generation Mazda MX-5 offers the best bang per buck among roadsters, so the Clio 197 is probably the sweet spot for quick Renault hatchbacks right now. With prices rising for the 172 and 182 Sport Clio models, the slightly heavier 197 with its 194bhp two-litre engine still delivers loads of va-va voom and because it’s a bit wider, it handles really well too.

OMS single-seater

If you want the real Formula 1 experience on a budget then a single-seater race car from OMS is just the ticket. Most of them use a 750cc or one-litre motorcycle engine to deliver genuine driving thrills with some versions even having launch control and flat-shifting. You can easily get into a decent one for £6500 but this isn’t one you can drive to Shelsley Walsh, you’ll definitely a trailer.

DHF unveils exciting plans to boost skills, standards, and industry insight in 2026

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced its ambitious programme of work for the year ahead, with particular focus on competence, standards, training, and insight for the building hardware sector.

A major milestone will took place on 4th February, when the federation unveiled the UK’s first Ofqual regulated, ABBE accredited qualifications specifically designed for the building hardware industry. The exclusive launch event will be held at the British Motor Museum and is open to DHF members of the Building Hardware Group and manufacturers within the Timber and Metal Doorset Groups and invited guests.

Developed by the industry for the industry, the programme draws on more than 500 years of combined specialist experience and includes more than 175 learning outcomes supported by clear assessment criteria. Together, these qualifications establish a new benchmark for demonstrating and assuring competence. They will be available to DHF members in the Spring, with a wider rollout to non-members in winter.

DHF is also progressing plans to introduce digital CSCS cards, working in partnership with ADSA and CSCS. The new digital card scheme is expected to go live in late Spring. Developed with the CSCS digital card provider, the system will make issuing and checking cards faster and more efficient, with cards accessible online and scannable on site, giving managers instant access to relevant qualifications while helping to reduce fraud and misuse.

Work is also underway to address gaps in standards across the sector. Following discussions within the Building Hardware Group, DHF has identified an opportunity to introduce a recognised standard for key safes within its Technical Specification offering, reflecting their widespread use. Given that high performance locks and hardware can be undermined by unregulated access, DHF has developed a new standard for key safes, which will be launched later in the year once final amendments are complete.

Responding directly to member demand, DHF will also introduce a new ‘attendance only’ training course for office-based staff working in organisations that install, maintain, or repair automated gates, industrial doors, and garage doors. The course is designed to provide essential knowledge for office teams and will complement existing industrial door, garage door and automated gate training programmes.

The DHF Conference is planned to take place in Autumn 2026 and will be open to all members. The event will provide an opportunity for professionals from across the sector to connect, share insight, and stay informed about key developments affecting the building hardware industry.

In addition, DHF is collaborating with the Barbour ABI Consultancy Research team to deliver a comprehensive new piece of industry research for members of the Automated Gate Group. The report will help the industry understand the current value of the market, identify potential areas for growth, and assess how individual businesses perform against the industry average. For the first time, this work will equip the sector with robust insight to support strategic planning. The report will be available exclusively to members of the Automated Gate Group.

“There is much to look forward to for the year ahead and these initiatives demonstrate our commitment to improving standards and competence as well as supporting our members as the industry moves forward,” explains DHF’s Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “By introducing recognised qualifications, digital systems, versatile training, and clear market insight, we are helping to create a stronger, more skilled, and more confident construction industry.”

Abloy UK announces 2026 Academy training programme

Abloy UK has announced its 2026 Academy training dates, reinforcing its commitment to advancing knowledge and competence across security and access control specification and installation.

The Abloy Academy offers a comprehensive suite of training courses including Foundations, Foundations Plus, practical Digital Access Solutions (DAS) sessions, and a programme of RIBA-accredited CPD training designed to support professionals at every stage of their career.

The Foundations Course provides a full-day introduction to the core standards and legislation applicable to door sets and access control, helping delegates understand how different hardware and configurations affect compliance and safety.

It covers key standards including those for fire doors, escape routes and door hardware performance, and is suitable for installers, security managers, specifiers, facilities teams and end-users.

Building on this, the Foundations Plus Course offers advanced compliance insight for those who have completed Foundations. It explores deeper standards interpretation, specification requirements for electric locking and access control, and practical considerations for different door types and fail-safe/fail-secure scenarios.

The DAS training portfolio focuses on Abloy’s digital access technologies, including CLIQ and other digital key systems, in a hands-on environment at the dedicated Academy. Attendees gain practical skills in installation, system configuration, product analysis and application case studies that reflect real-world project demands.

In addition, Abloy UK continues to deliver a strong series of RIBA-approved CPDs, both online and face-to-face, covering important themes such as Digital Transformation in Physical Security, Electrical Locking for Fire and Escape Doors, Escape Door Systems (EN 13637) and Wireless Access Control.

These sessions support architects and designers with professional development while deepening understanding of access control standards and technology trends.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK who leads the Foundations courses, said: “Our Foundations training is about building confidence while ensuring competence and compliance.

“Whether delegates are new to access control or looking to strengthen their technical knowledge, these courses provide a solid grounding in standards, legislation and best practice that can be applied immediately on site or at the specification stage, supporting safer, more effective access solutions across the built environment.”

Johnathon Dale, Digital Access Solutions (DAS) Academy Manager at Abloy UK, added: “Digital Access Solutions give organisations far greater control, flexibility and visibility over their access environments.

“Through our DAS training, we help attendees understand how digital key systems can enhance security, simplify access management and reduce the risks associated with lost or unmanaged keys, while ensuring solutions are specified and installed correctly for real-world applications.”

In person training courses take place at Abloy UK’s facilities in Willenhall, West Midlands, and most courses are offered free of charge with lunch provided, ensuring accessibility for professionals across the sector. In addition, there are a range of online webinar training sessions that can be accessed.
