Two new Appointments at Codelocks assist Global Expansion and add Expertise

Digital lock designer and manufacturer Codelocks has promoted Colin Campbell to its board of directors in charge of worldwide sales, responsible for business growth across the Codelocks group. The group consists of Codelocks UK, USA, and Australia, and encompasses all of the access control product ranges.

In his new role, Colin will focus on aligning global sales strategies, including overseeing deals with multinational companies. He will focus on growing Codelocks’ global market share and continue to maximise Codelocks’ international relationships. This new position will also ensure that products continue to meet market sector needs, new products are introduced quickly, and pricing remains market competitive.

Commenting on the appointment, Grant Macdonald, Managing Director of Codelocks, said:
“Colin’s performance since joining Codelocks has been exemplary and is reflected in this promotion to the board as Sales Director. The depth of his experience in our industry means he appreciates the different needs across market sectors and distribution models between regions, and most importantly how to effectively manage these.
“Colin has the skills we need to help us continue global business growth and he will play a key role in developing products for emerging markets. With the creation of this new position, Codelocks continues to strengthen and expand in a targeted, controlled way.”

Colin added, “I am looking forward to being involved in the further expansion of Codelocks into North East America and Central Europe and the opportunities that this will create. It’s an exciting time to be part of the growth of Codelocks, which now has over 150 variants of mechanical, electronic and smart locks.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to address the challenges customers, locksmiths and distributors face and promote Codelocks products on multiple levels, in a variety of different markets and languages. I am excited to meet with the entire team across all locations in the coming weeks, to share best practice and agree future plans.”

Having previously worked for over 20 years in the door and hardware industry, Colin brought a wealth of experience with him to Codelocks over 18 months ago when he was appointed as a Sales Manager, overseeing business operations in both the UK and Middle East.

During this time the business underwent double-digit growth in both its domestic and overseas markets. Colin’s industry expertise is enhanced by his membership to professional trade body Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) and membership to Institute of Architectural Ironmongers (IAI).

In a second announcement, Codelocks has appointed Jo Milne-Rowe into its business development team.

Jo will focus on supporting existing accounts in the south of the UK and will be responsible for developing new sales growth across multiple areas.

Joining Codelocks with extensive experience in architectural hardware, mechanical security and electronic access control, Jo will identify new target markets, implement sales strategies and assist in the development of the next generation of access control products.

Colin Campbell, Sales Director, welcomes Jo to Codelocks:

“Jo brings a deep understanding of the access and security industry to Codelocks. Her experience of forging strong relationships and successfully launching new products will be an asset to the team.
“Part of Jo’s role is to develop and deliver educational training programme to meet the varying needs of our customers. It is a demanding challenge to ensure that communications are suited for a range of novice to advanced audiences, and the programme meets both sales and technical needs.
“We welcome Jo to the role and look forward to continuing Codelocks’ long-term international business growth, utilising her expertise.”

Commenting on her new role, Jo says:
“Working for a digital lock innovator, with colleagues who are experts in access control, is a great opportunity. Joining the company at a time of expansion and as it launches its new smart lock range is exciting.
“I am looking forward to helping to continue to grow the business and delivering its new training programme for security installers, locksmiths and architects.”

Jo is the Chairperson of the South East Institute of Architectural Ironmongers (IAI) which involves organising networking meetings with industry experts, delivering thought leading presentations and supporting the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme.

New guide to acoustic seals: everything you need to know about the impact of the Building Regulations

A free guide to specifying acoustic seals on door assemblies and doorsets has been launched by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI).

The demands of the various Approved Documents of the Building Regulations in England are placing an increasing burden on the specification of doors. Regulations now stipulate that they need to be acoustically rated in addition to being fire and smoke rated.

The GAI Guide to Acoustic Seals provides details on how acoustic seals will be affected by Approved Documents E and M of the Building Regulations for England which focus on resistance to the passage of sound, and access to and use of buildings, respectively.

The guide simplifies the main elements that specifiers should consider in order to meet requirements.

It covers a range of topics including how related test reports should be interpreted, the required standard for test procedures on door acoustics and what makes a good acoustic door.

The guide also gives comprehensive information on how to achieve the highest acoustic rating possible on a standard door, fitting a glazing panel into a door which must provide acoustic performance and putting letter plates into fire rated doors.

Douglas Masterson, GAI technical manager and author of the guide, said:
“It is the responsibility of the specifier to look for existing proven solutions to meet, and exceed, requirements of the Building Regulations.
“With this in mind, the GAI has put this guide together to help our members navigate their way through the demands of the legislation and standards which govern our industry.”
The guide has been sponsored by Lorient and is available for member companies to download from the member’s area of the GAI website.

Securing Medicines at QE Hospital

Locking experts Abloy UK and leading medical equipment manufacturer Bristol Maid have supplied the Queen Elizabeth (QE) Hospital Birmingham with over 1,400 keys and 1,600 locks, fitting PROTEC2 CLIQ© and Traka21 advanced key management systems to improve the security of medicines.

In addition to nursing efficiency, one of the major issues faced by QE and many other healthcare organisations is that of medicine management, and how to effectively secure drugs whilst giving nurses quick and convenient access.

Poor management of keys detrimentally affects nursing efficiency, as staff using older mechanical key systems find it difficult to keep track of who has the keys, and searching for that person to gain access to controlled drugs wastes a substantial cumulative amount of nurse’s time.

The solution to both of these issues at the QE was the PROTEC2 CLIQ© key system from Abloy UK.

PROTEC2 CLIQ© is an easy-to-use access control system based on mechanical high security disc cylinders combined with highly encrypted electronic locking and identification.

Power to the lock is provided by the CLIQ© key, therefore no batteries or wires are required to either the lock or drug cabinet, making it an ideal retrofit solution - even for applications such as mobile drug trolleys.

The system allows for remote key management, providing comprehensive audit trails on locks and padlocks, and the ability to remove lost or stolen keys from the system, substantially increasing the security of controlled drugs.

PROTEC2 CLIQ© was combined with the Traka21 key management system, which provides nurses’ access to a single key for the duration of their shift. By simply entering a PIN code to access a specific key which they validate using the wall programming unit, they can access every cabinet they’re authorised to open.

Aaron Ballard Ridley, Sales Specialist – Healthcare, Abloy UK, said:

“The PROTEC2 CLIQ© and Traka21 systems offer key audit trails, which means Chief Pharmacists and Nurse Managers can view a report of exactly who has accessed particular cabinets or trolley’s at any time. This substantially increases the security of medicine cabinets, whilst making them easier to manage.
“Efficiency is also increased, as each nurse – whether they are permanent or bank staff – has access to their own key with personalised access rights, and they don’t have to waste time looking for who has the key to a particular cupboard.”

Inderjit Singh, Chief Pharmacist at QE Birmingham, commented:
“For us, the key return on investment is the quality of service we’re providing. The message from all nursing staff is that patients are getting medicines much easier and in a more timely fashion.”

Check doors for safety following fatality, DHF urges

The tragic death of a woman who died after getting caught in an automatic car park door underlines the need for all those responsible for automated doors to ensure they are safe.

So says the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), the trade body which represents suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered doors, gates and traffic barriers.

The woman, understood to be in her 30s, is thought to have got into difficulty while accessing the automatic rolling shutter at a private parking basement at an apartment complex in Cambridge. The accident is being investigated by the police and the Health & Safety Executive.

Said DHF training officer Nick Perkins:
"This tragic death is a stark reminder to building owners, landlords and all those responsible for properties with any kind of automated door or gate that they have a legal obligation to ensure the safe operation of those doors and gates.
"They have liabilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act to ensure automated doors and gates are safe and subject to regular planned preventative maintenance. Engineers and maintenance operatives called out to carry out work on doors and gates also have a legal obligation to not put unsafe doors and gates back into service until they are made safe."

The DHF says one third of all powered roller shutter garage doors in the UK are unsafe and not fit for purpose. It is thought there is a near miss with an industrial or car park door every single day of the week in the UK.

Said Nick Perkins:
"Large numbers of dangerous doors are still in service today and responsible maintainers face constant resistance from owners in regard to the need for safety related work. A safe door is one that is protected from structural failure, crushing people or vehicles, falling back in the event of a suspension system fault and one which will prevent persons from being lifted to a place of danger.
"All those responsible for the safety of doors must ensure new installations are fully certified and CE marked."

DHF offer comprehensive industrial and garage door safety and compliance training with their Industrial Door Safety Diploma course that is rapidly gaining popularity as the awareness of the complexity of providing the correct levels of safety spreads. http://www.dhfonline.org.uk .

More information on door and gate safety can be obtained from www.hse.gov.uk .

GEZE UK’s entrance for the Whitworth Gallery is a work of art

When the Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, launched an architectural competition for its extension, it wanted a design that would make its important collection accessible to a wider range of visitors and re-establish the relationship with its grounds, home of England’s first gallery in a park.

The winning design, by McInnes Usher McKnight Architects (MUMA), is both sensitive and inspirational – glass, stainless steel and brick have been married with the Grade II listed building to create an elegant exhibition space overlooking the park. And with over 440,000 people visiting each year, GEZE UK were chosen to create an automatic entrance to ensure that the building – and therefore the art - is accessible to all.

The new glass entrance connects the gallery to the surrounding park and features two sets of sliding glass doors powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT automatic operators. The doors have been positioned directly opposite each other to create a lobby. This contributes to sustainability by ensuring heat loss and gain is minimised without limiting accessibility. It also helps to ensure a pleasant even temperature for visitors and staff without blasts of hot or cold air when the doors are opened.

Thanks to its slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive SL NT operator has been discretely installed so it is barely noticeable to the user. The operators are finished in the same brushed simulated stainless steel finish as the porch structure and two 130mm diameter stainless steel bollards with push pads have been installed to allow visitors to activate the doors. Pocket screens have been installed to ensure the safety of visitors to the gallery.

As with all GEZE’s automatic operators the Slimdrive SL NT enables compliance to the Equality Act and BS 8300.

The Whitworth’s £15m extension project has already been recognised by the architectural community scooping a RIBA National Award 2015, Building of the Year in the RIBA North West Regional Awards and two AJ Retrofit Awards – Cultural & Public Buildings and Heritage & Listed Buildings. It has also been awarded the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015 for ‘redefining the way that it engages with its public, connecting the building and surrounding park’. It was also was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK said:
“The Whitworth is a culturally significant building with a collection of huge national importance, so it was a privilege to be involved in creating an entrance that would help make it easily accessible to the thousands of people that visit each year.
“The Slimdrive SL NT has been designed to be aesthetically pleasing whilst offering exceptional functionality and reliability, which is why it is chosen time and again for buildings such as the Whitworth that have high levels of footfall.”

Sensational turnout for Britain’s biggest Ford event

Over 18,000 fans and more than 4,000 club cars packed into Silverstone for the biggest and best Ford event in the UK, which took place last weekend.

Now in its 31st year, Ford Fair continues to be the ‘must attend’ event for anyone involved in the Ford scene, and this year it was as lively as ever, with scores of features to keep fans of the Blue Oval enthralled.

Among them were a Masterclass and Demo show with renowned stunt driver, Paul Swift, where a few selected lucky winners got to learn how to do a J-turn in the Live Action Arena.

The show also saw track laps from some of the UK’s fastest Fords, invited by the team at Fast Ford magazine, as well as a lap of the iconic circuit from a selection of Classic Fords that were present on the day.

One lucky winner also got the chance to go out on track with BTCC driver Aron Smith, behind the wheel of Auto Specialists’ time attack Mk3 Focus RS.

Once again, the event was sponsored by aftermarket Ford specialists, mountune. The tuning and parts specialist had a host of performance cars and famous faces on its stand, and in action on the day, including former BTCC champion and Motorbase Performance/Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan.

Phil Weeden, Kelsey Media MD said:

"Yet again, Ford Fair proved itself to be the most popular and unmissable event in the Ford calendar, with great attendance and some fine cars on display, from modified moderns to cosseted classics. There’s so much variety in the Ford scene, and this is the show that brings all that variety together.”

That variety was never more apparent than among the event’s prize winners. The Top club Stand award went to Fiesta Red & Black, with an astonishing 41 cars on display, while the best wheels award went to Paul Linfoot for his ex-Graham Goode BTCC Sierra Cosworth.

Ben Walker’s Ford Fiesta won the Show and Shine (sponsored by Autoperfekt), while the ‘Homebuilt Heroes’ award (sponsored by Burton Power) went to Danny Vincent for his Anglia 100E.

There were also a number of concours awards, with the top prizes for best standard and modified car going to Edd Owers (standard) for his Mk 3 Fiesta RS Turbo, and Colin Stone (modified) for his Mk 3 Escort RS Turbo.

After the success of Ford Fair, fans of the Blue Oval will be delighted to know that there’s still one more major event in the Ford calendar for 2016, with Ford Fest taking place at Santa Pod, Bedfordshire, on September 18th. For more information, visit www.fordfestshow.co.uk

Fire Door Safety Week commemorates Great Fire of London

Fire Door Safety Week is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet, with cross industry support and a growing army of high profile backers contributing to a range of activities and creative plans that also commemorate the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, the event which gave rise to the ‘fire door’.

The award winning campaign, which runs from 26 September – 2 October 2016, aims to raise awareness of the critical role that fire doors play in protecting property and saving lives.
Run by the British Woodworking Federation, the BWF-Certifire Fire Door Scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS), the campaign focuses on helping those responsible for building specification, installation and maintenance/management of fire doors and highlights the risks that unsatisfactory fire doors present to property and lives.

This year particular focus will be on the high risk areas of Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMO), private rented, council and social housing, sheltered housing and care homes.

Support for the campaign has already been pledged from South Wales, West Midlands and London fire and rescue services, as well as a significant number of companies in the door and hardware industries.

It is also backed by the Government’s Fire Kills campaign, the Fire Sector Federation, the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), Children’s Burns Trust (CBT) and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI).

Hannah Mansell, BWF-Certifire scheme manager and Fire Door Safety Week spokesperson said:
“From April 2014 to March 2015 there were 28,200 dwelling fires in England alone. Deaths from these fires contributed to nearly two thirds of the total fire fatalities in that time frame. This is why we continue to campaign for changes in legislation and to educate people on the importance of fire doors. A properly installed fire door can save your life.”

Housing landlords need to be fully informed of their responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors. Building owners, facilities and estates managers have a legal duty to appoint a ‘responsible person’, who is accountable for the fire safety in the building that they own or manage, to ensure that the fire doors installed comply with current legislation.

Research by FDIS found that more than £450,000 in fines was issued to the landlords and managers of HMOs during 2015, as well as a number of custodial and suspended sentences.

Hannah Mansell continues:
“Last year was a resounding success for Fire Door Safety Week with 129 organisations pledging support and many running events. This year we want to build on that momentum by encouraging even more fire services, local councils and stakeholders to get involved and help us to spread the fire door safety message.”

A number of supporters have already begun arranging events to take place during Fire Door Safety Week, including Arnold Laver, Gerda, Vetrotech, ASFP, PFPF and Lorient UK.

London Fire Brigade is working with BWF-Certifire to deliver a fire door safety conference to its fire safety teams across London on 29 September 2016.

BWF-Certifire is also working on a new social media campaign, Click It, Kick It – this campaign wages war on the lethal fire door wedge. In the Click It, Kick It campaign anyone who sees a fire door being wedged open is urged to take a photo (Click It), to share on social media using the hashtag #ClickItKickIt, and then to kick the wedge away (Kick It) so the door can close. It is important that any instances where fire doors have been wedged open are reported to the building owner or manager.

Any confiscated or donated wedges will feature in a piece of artwork that will be unveiled at a reception on 2 September. The event, hosted by BWF-Certifire, marks 350 years to the day since the Great Fire of London broke out. For every wedge donated, BWF-Certifire will be donating an amount of money to the Children’s Burns Trust.

David Oldfield, chairman of BWF-Certifire, said:
“Click It, Kick It is all about raising awareness of the importance of keeping fire doors in good working order. People don’t realise that properly specified fire doors provide a barrier to stop the spread of fire and smoke and can last between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the door. In an emergency, every second counts. Time is critical and can be the difference between life and death. If the door is wedged open then it can’t protect us – wedging open fire doors are a bad habit we have to break.
“This year is particularly significant as it raises the question why after 350 years have we not nailed this. The wedge is just part of a legacy of neglect arising from historically poor specification, installation, maintenance and management of fire doors. There is no excuse for poor fire door safety. Corners have been cut and bad decisions have been made, but we hope through Fire Door Safety week to stop the rot and restart the market.”

The Fire Door Safety Week website offers tailored advice to those who are responsible for fire safety. This advice covers a range of sectors including housing, schools and hospitals.
There are also free resources in an online toolkit to help spread the word about fire door safety. These include technical checklists to help with fire door inspections, videos and posters that can be used in any private, public or multiple occupancy building to educate people on basic fire door rules.

There are also many other ways to get involved, including promoting the message of Fire Door Safety Week on websites and social media, running events, carrying out full onsite inspections and sending any images of dodgy fire doors to Theodore Firedoor's Facebook page.

Follow @FDSafetyWeek on Twitter for campaign news and updates, or look out for tweets using the hashtag #FireDoorSafetyWeek.

Laidlaw ready for business as new independent chapter begins

Laidlaw – one of the country’s leading names in architectural ironmongery, balustrades and security systems – is celebrating success, just six months after it was relaunched as an independent business.

Chairman Steve Lee said since taking over the business in January, it is now fully re-established and is providing a range of exceptional architectural ironmongery products through a number of partners.

“This is an exciting new chapter for the business,” he said. “Over the past 140 years, Laidlaw has always enjoyed a fantastic reputation and as new owners, we are single-mindedly focusing on our core strengths to ensure that our customers continue to receive the excellent service and quality they rightly demand.”

Laidlaw has eight regional centres across the UK, with 130 highly skilled staff who are trained to offer technical expertise for even the most complex architectural ironmongery, balustrades and security system needs across all sectors, including residential, health, education, leisure and commercial. It also works with companies to develop innovative bespoke products, priding itself on its attention to detail.

The extensive Laidlaw Architectural Ironmongery range includes handles, locks, closers and signage, as well as solutions for specialist applications such as mental health. It also provides a range of performance-critical ironmongery for door manufacturers to incorporate into fully integrated doorsets. Technical staff, most of whom are qualified to the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers Diploma standard, can provide an end-to-end service, including specification, design, manufacture, supply and project management.

Laidlaw also offers a bespoke service to specifiers, providing design, prototyping and manufacturing of architectural ironmongery products specifically to meet a client’s needs.

The outstanding Laidlaw balustrades range complies with all the necessary Building Regulations and BS/EN recommendations for structural stability, safety and accessibility. They come in a range of materials – including timber, stainless steel, glass and coloured nylon finishes that enable customers to match corporate colours and attain bespoke design options.

And the Laidlaw Security Systems specialist business unit provides premium security solutions including access control, door automation, CCTV and mechanical locking solutions. The team provides the highest levels of service throughout the process, liaising with clients, specifiers and contractors to ensure the system developed and installed is perfect for any company’s existing – and future – needs.
