Gilgen helps secure flagship car dealership

When a major car manufacturer was planning the launch of its new £4m dealership, with hundreds of vehicles to be displayed and serviced on site, building security and access were key considerations in the design.

Following a comprehensive supplier review Gilgen Door Systems was chosen to deliver a solution that provided controlled day / night access to the vehicle service area and subsequently installed four high security shutters and three high speed doors.

Working with GRS architects, Gilgen completed a site survey to evaluate site safety, security and access requirements. The company then proposed a solution based on insulated LPS1175, SR2 rated security shutters in front of high speed curtain doors which it was decided gave the facility with the best combination of accessibility, environmental performance and security.

The Rolegard SR2 shutters are certified to the latest LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board), issue 7, level 2 standard and also meet Police Preferred ‘Secured by Design’ standards. Tested against physical attack including prising, gouging, jacking, and drilling, Rolegard SR2 helps mitigate medium level security threats through hardened physical protection.

An insulated version of the shutter was chosen for the garage to help reduce building heat loss and through its acoustic properties minimise noise pollution. The steel curtain profile incorporates a special foam-filled layer which contributes to a low U value of 3.8W/m².K, an accurate measure of energy efficiency.

Each shutter, the largest of which is 5m wide by 3.6m high, is driven by a powerful GFA 3-phase direct drive motor with push button activation and safety release which offers safe, reliable operation.

Behind three of the security shutters, Gilgen installed Kwikroll KR630SE high speed curtain doors which act as an effective environmental barrier during the working day. Their high speed operation of up to 3m per second means they provide easy vehicle access whilst significantly reducing heat loss.

Being designed to withstand external wind pressures they also reduce water ingress and dirt contamination inside the service area. Each high speed curtain is activated by motion sensors triggered by approaching vehicles whilst a large vision panel helps improve visibility for drivers entering or leaving the garage. Safety is further enhanced by the inclusion of an integral curtain light beam with stop and return function that continuously monitors the door area to prevent accidental contact as the door closes.

Gilgen Door Systems is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of powered door systems including industrial doors, security doors and automatic pedestrian doors. Gilgen’s market leading range of high security shutters meets LPS1175, issue 7, level 2,3,4 and 5 standards and is suitable for a wide range of facilities such as commercial outlets, banks, museums and critical infrastructure that requires protection from potential security threats.

Garador Launches New 4 Button Hand Transmitters

Garador have recently launched a new 4 button micro hand transmitter, for use on its GaraMatic 9, GaraMatic 10 and GaraMatic 20 operators. With a GaraMatic operator, homeowners can have a fully automatic garage door

The new hand transmitters aren’t just nice to look at; they are functional too, giving a user the ability to operate up to four doors with just one hand transmitter.

Simon Hipgrave, Managing Director of Garador comments:
“These new hand transmitters have been really popular with our customers, as they let them control up to four different doors, whereas the previous version of the hand transmitter, which only had 2 buttons, could only control up to 2 different doors.”

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that really make a difference and the new smaller size of this hand transmitter has some really practical benefits. It lets homeowners put the hand transmitter on a keyring so they won’t forget it.

Simon continues “the other useful aspect to the four button design is it is smaller than our other handsets and fits neatly on a keyring. So you can carry it with your car keys or just keep it loose in your pocket”

Garador now offer two types of finish on its hand transmitters; a gloss surface finish and a matt surface finish. The 4-button micro version comes in an understated matt black textured surface finish, which is hard wearing.

Furthermore, it uses 868 MHz high frequency signals to communicate with the garage door operator and rolling code technology whereby the signal code changes each time it is used. This ensures no one can copy the signal and gain access into your garage.

The new Garador hand transmitters also feature bi-directional FM radio signals that use the same 128 bit encryption often employed by banks for online banking security.

Visit www.garador.co.uk to view the new 4-button hand transmitters and the full range of mobile radio accessories.

Allgood to Exhibit Benefits of Antimicrobial Copper Ironmongery at Patient First Exhibition

Allgood plc will be exhibiting its innovative Contego copper alloy architectural ironmongery range alongside the Copper Development Association on stand K88 at the Patient First exhibition, taking place on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd November 2016 at London’s ExCeL.

Offering the aesthetic appeal of stainless steel in a copper product, the Contego range incorporates the powerful antimicrobial qualities integral to copper, which is the most effective touch surface material in the fight against pathogenic microbes, killing greater than 99.9% of bacteria within 2 hours of exposure.

An increasingly popular method of infection prevention and control, antimicrobial copper is a cost effective, durable solution for hospital and healthcare environments.

Richard van den Bos, Product Manager at Allgood said:
“Relying on existing measures such as good hand hygiene, regular cleaning, disinfection and the promotion of general sanitation practices cannot eradicate health-care associated infections. In fact, 300,000 patients in England annually acquire a healthcare-associated infection while in the care of the NHS.
“High touch surfaces such as door handles, push plates and WC turns are common transfer points for bacteria and microbes within any busy environment.
“In a healthcare setting, where infection prevention and control is of paramount importance, results show that microbial contamination is significantly reduced on copper compared to standard surfaces by greater than 80%.
“The Contego copper alloy ironmongery seamlessly integrates with stainless steel furniture, providing a sterile and clean appearance whilst significantly reducing the risk posed by pathogens.”

Visitors to stand K88 will be able to discuss the antimicrobial properties of the Contego range with Allgood experts, as well as face the Contego Challenge, where guests are asked to identify and distinguish between copper alloy and stainless steel handles.

Patient First is the leading event for NHS and independent healthcare professionals and is co-located with The Infection, Prevention and Control Congress, a two day long event that provides practical and advanced advice for improving patient care.

For more information on Patient First please visit: www.patientfirstuk.com

Ford Performance Reveals All-New, Global, Mustang GT4 Turnkey Race Car at 2016 SEMA Show

Ford Performance revealed on Thursday an all-new, track-ready turnkey Mustang racecar that’s ready to compete around the globe - the Ford Mustang GT4.

The Mustang GT4, unveiled at the 2016 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, has been designed and engineered jointly by Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports to compete in sports car championship racing series globally. This includes the GT4 European Series, which visits Silverstone circuit for the UK leg.

The Mustang GT4 puts Ford head-to-head with competition from Porsche and Aston Martin among others – in a mirror of the hugely popular FIA World Endurance Championship, where the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT takes on the Aston Martin Vantage GTE, Porsche 911 RSR and Ferrari 488 GTE

It’s inspired by the Ford Shelby GT350R-C that won the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge championship just last month.

“As the Mustang nameplate continually expands its presence in markets throughout the world, so does our relevant motorsport presence,” explained David Pericak, global director of Ford Performance.
“The Mustang GT4 is equipped to compete and win on tracks around the globe, and we expect it to be as popular with racers as its production sibling is with consumers.”

The Mustang GT4 is equipped with the next generation, naturally aspirated 5.2L V8 racing engine specifically tuned for GT4 competition. The race engine was engineered, validated and built by Ford Performance in partnership with Roush Yates Engines.

A lightweight, compact six-speed Holinger paddle shift transmission delivers proven race durability with direct-pneumatic activation for fast, positive and consistent gear shifts. The GT4 powertrain also carries a dry sump oiling system, ZF-developed twin-plate racing clutch and flywheel.

Chassis features on the Mustang GT4 include:

  • Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV™) dampers from Multimatic for advanced predictability, accuracy, repeatability and ultimate vehicle control
  • Rear lower control arms (designed specifically for coil-over springs) and front/rear stabilizer bars from Multimatic
  • Lightweight 18” x 11” forged alloy wheels from Forgeline
  • Rotors and six-piston calipers from Brembo

Aerodynamic enhancements on the Mustang GT4 include a rear wing, the design of which was derived from lessons learned by the Ford GT racing program, front splitter, hood venting, diveplanes and rear diffuser.

On the interior, the Mustang GT4 carries a full FIA-compliant roll cage and race-oriented dash logger from MoTeC.

Peter leaves his pivotal partner

GEZE UK has been pivotal in the career of Peter Haywood who is set to retire from his role as an area sales manager after 48 years in the industry.

The company ‘opened the door’ to a number of opportunities in Peter’s career – spring boarding him into a glamourous role in the Middle East before joining the firm itself on his return to the UK.
He has spent a total of 16 years working for GEZE UK, overseeing sales in London, and the south east and latterly in the south west, and is due to retire at Christmas.

Explained Peter: “About 20 years ago, I was attending a GEZE exhibition in Italy when I was introduced to some businessmen from Dubai. I had experience in managing sales to the Middle East and they asked me if I would be interested in a job over there. A few months later, I was flown first class to Jordan to discuss a post overseas.

“I can’t resist a challenge and took the job. I worked out there for just over a year and during that time lived in the Arab neighbourhoods with Palestinian colleagues which led me to learn so much more than if I had been in one of the ex-pat areas.”

However, the call of home saw him return to the UK in 1997 and when former MD of GEZE UK, Dene Parker, heard that Peter was heading back, he suggested there could be a role for him with the company.

“He didn’t offer me something immediately,” recalled Peter, “he wanted to make sure that I had satisfied my wanderlust, so advised me to apply for other positions and decide whether I really wanted to be with GEZE UK and would be prepared to stay.”

Stay he did – initially for eight years – and then returned to the company in 2005 where he has remained for the remainder of his career.

During his time with GEZE UK he has been involved in a number of exciting projects including work on the Royal School of Music and the Royal Albert Hall, in London, the creation of the Madjeski Stadium – home of Reading Football Club, Glasgow Velodrome and a 600-ton ship for the Jubilee Sailing Trust which teaches disabled and able-bodied people to crew tall ships.

Peter’s eclectic career started as a building merchant’s apprentice at Randall’s in Bedford at the age of 17. He spent time as a metals buyer with Edward Baustead Ltd on the LME (London Metal Exchange) before moving into sales at Lloyd Worrall where he gained his Guild of Architectural Ironmongers qualification in 1983.

At Adrian Stokes Overseas Ltd, he developed knowledge of the Middle East and Far East markets, eventually becoming overseas contracts director handling contracts up to £1.25m.

He opened a new office for Worrall in Portsmouth during a brief return to the company and subsequently launched a new business in the city, Haywood Architectural, prior to his time in Dubai.

Peter is a former chairman of the Institute of Architectural Ironmongers and lives in Portsmouth. He has two grown-up children and two grandchildren.

His role with GEZE UK will be taken up by Gavin Coster who has had the opportunity to work alongside Peter in the run-up to his retirement.
“I have had a very rewarding career and seen some amazing sights, such as behind the scenes of historic palaces and stately homes to which the public would not normally have access. Not many industries could offer such wonderful experiences and opportunities, and on the way, I have met customers and colleagues who have become great friends,” added Peter.
Peter is not intending to turn his back on the industry completely – he is planning to do some consultancy work and is also to acquire a classic motorbike to renovate.

Said Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK:
“We are very sorry to be losing Peter. He has been a stalwart of the sales team. He has won and managed many important contracts for the company over the years, developing strong relationships and providing advice and expertise. We wish him a long and happy retirement, knowing that the friends that he has made from the industry will remain an important part of his life.”

Island life for Urmet

Urmet is providing its IPervoice video entry and access control solution to
London City Island, a project in Docklands being dubbed ‘Mini Manhattan.’

Urmet is providing its IPervoice video entry and access control solution to London City Island, a project in Docklands being dubbed ‘Mini Manhattan.’ As well as accommodation, the 12-acre redeveloped site will feature offices, arts organisations, a gallery and retail outlets.

In total there will be 1,700 apartments across ten buildings, each featuring brickwork in a striking single colour. The island is on a loop of the River Lea, where it joins the Thames, and is being transformed into a glass-and-steel waterside district in keeping with the area’s maritime heritage.

The current phase of this ten-year project will see Urmet door entry equipment installed in 417 homes (two separate buildings) by London-based security systems integrator Heston Apex Europe. The security firm will be responsible for installing Urmet’s recently launched Elekta INOX brushed stainless steel flush-mounted door entry panels. The Elekta INOX has been developed in collaboration with architects to create minimal visual impact and preserve overall aesthetic appearances, with a protrusion of just 2.5mm.

London City Island residents will benefit from using Urmet’s Signo door phones in either audio or video versions, depending on individual property specifications. Like the Elekta INOX, the Signo units, which are compatible with all the main Urmet video door phone systems, are neutral in appearance and exceptionally compact.

Open platform

London City Island is among the first implementations of the Elekta INOX. The panels include an RF reader, and concierge staff will auto-manage proximity access control for residents, who will use 868 MHz remote control RF tokens, also supplied by Urmet. The panels are optimised for the visually impaired and because the mounting height is flexible, installers are also able to accommodate wheelchair users.

Mark Hagger, Urmet’s Sales and Marketing Director, said:

“As more of the ten apartment blocks go up, interaction using our IPervoice system will be invaluable. Concierges at the different buildings will communicate with each other as well as with residents, using our switchboard software. If a concierge is not present, functions can be transferred to another switchboard in another building to give 24/7 coverage and significant operational savings for the building owner.”

Hagger added: “By opting for IPervoice, the client is getting a high-spec future-proofed IP system offering interoperability with other security equipment and helping to achieve the goal of intelligent building management.”

Urban regeneration

The developer is EcoWorld Ballymore, who is set to transform this section of the Leamouth Peninsula. Infrastructure includes a new footbridge across the Lea that connects the island with Canning Town and public transport, including the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway.

Apartment residents will be able to use a clubhouse, gymnasium, screening rooms, pools and even a spa. The area is set to become a hub for the arts sector, with the English National Ballet and the London Film School relocating to the island. There will be a kilometre of green-fringed waterfront for residents, office workers, students and general visitors to enjoy.

While carrying out the installation, Heston Apex Europe (HAE) has worked with MEP contractors Cilantro Engineering. HAE is an innovative physical security and life systems integrator offering door entry management, access control, IP camera surveillance and fire protection. The company’s projects are carried out to NSI, British and International Standards as well as BAFE. HAE is active in the commercial and public sectors working with end-users ranging from SMEs to Fortune 500 companies. Installations are designed to be low-maintenance but comprehensive servicing and support is available 24/7.

Finding the Balance with Black Millwork

Black Millwork has supplied its own range of fenestration, as well as Andersen windows and doors to an ambitious renovation project in Hampshire.
The amazing Cape Cod style house will benefit from a beautiful outlook and impressive performance standards.

Ever since purchasing the property in October 2013, the owners of Rivercroft have been working on turning their property into an amazing Cape Cod style home. Over the course of two years they’ve achieved their two main ambitions, to expand the property and improve its thermal performance.

Situated in an elevated position, overlooking Lymington Harbour, the owners decided the Cape Cod style would be the most apt home design. Whilst the location allows for incredible views it comes with its own set of issues. The combination of the home’s elevated position and its close proximity to the sea makes it prone to salt-air attack. This is in turn effects the pH scale of building materials leading to corrosion over time.

Therefore it was essential the specified windows protected against this phenomena. That’s one of the reasons the owners chose Andersen 400 Series Woodwright Sliding Sash Windows and Andersen 400 Series Frenchwood Door sets.  Andersen products with Stormwatch® protection have reinvented coastal windows and doors with exterior composite materials that withstand corrosive coastal conditions while providing classic architectural styles.

Being close to the coast also makes the home vulnerable to bouts of unpredictable weather. Traditionally Cape Cod homes were designed to withstand extreme conditions and Rivercroft is no different. The owners placed a great emphasis on using building materials that combined aesthetics with high-performance.

Speaking on the project, homeowner Bernadette Van Den Brule commented:
“We were really drawn to this American Cape Cod style home as our property overlooks the harbour. However, we needed to get the balance right, finding products that served us aesthetically and in terms of performance. At first I worried we may have to compromise on some of our design goals but after finding Black Millwork’s range of windows and doors it became obvious we wouldn’t have to.”

The most recent advances in timber technology ensure Black Millwork’s windows and doors exceed even the most stringent performance standards. At Rivercroft, Black Millwork’s Timber Aluminium Clad Composite Bi-Fold Door sets and a Timber Feature Entrance Door was also installed. These products use engineered timber, vacuum impregnated preservatives and high quality full factory finishes protecting against heat loss.

Some figures estimate that as much as 25 per cent of a home’s heat loss is through its windows and doors, so choosing efficient units are essential to the long-term performance of a home. What’s more, given the home’s size it was far more economical to specify high-quality materials for the building’s fabric than to invest in a recovery heating solution, which can be expensive.

Bernadette concluded: “We are so happy with the finished result. With Black Millwork’s help we’re now able to enjoy all the benefits of our scenic location in a comfortable and well-lit home.”

For more information about Black Millwork and the products is offers please visit www.blackmillwork.co.uk

‘Pure genius’ door design receives national prize for innovation

A brilliant innovation in door design has scooped the inaugural Product Design in Wood award at this year’s British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Awards.

Howdens Joinery and Norma Doors were presented with the award for their quick fit internal door system that halves the time to fit a traditional joinery door.

James Taylor, technical design manager at Howdens Joinery, said:

“The fitting of a typical joinery door has probably not changed in over 100 hundred years. We wanted to bring to market a door that is both simpler and quicker to install when compared to a traditional UK joinery door. The Quick Fit Door developed by Howdens Joinery and Norma Doors has halved the time taken to fit a door and may have changed how all doors will be fitted in the future.
“Instead of trimming the door down to size in the traditional way, the Quick Fit Door can be reduced in width by moving the stiles in and out to the desired size then securing with screws top and bottom. The fixings are carefully positioned to ensure no conflict when installing the door furniture, simply sliding in and out of the centre panel.
“Currently available in two sizes, these doors cover all required finished sizes and anything in-between, giving additional benefits in terms of a reduced stock holding.”

Watch the video below, you will be amazed!

The Product Design in Wood award is a new category in 2016, recognising excellence in technical expertise, application and innovation in joinery product manufacture and design.

Iain McIlwee, chief executive of the BWF, said:
“The BWF awards provide us with the opportunity to showcase some of the most gifted businesses and individuals in our industry who make some of the most exciting products and projects that can be achieved using wood.

“The judges of this award category described the Quick Fit Door as being both practical and innovative, making installation seamless and rationalising stock types – they said it was pure genius in its design.”

The annual BWF Woodworking Awards were hosted by one of Britain’s most famous Olympians, Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. The Product Design in Wood award was sponsored by Teknos.

Innovative security company celebrates 90 years in business

Charles Hallatt
Banham's Executive Chairman
The Capital’s largest supplier of home security systems are proud to have reached their 90th anniversary this month.

A true British brand, the Banham Group is one of the most established businesses in the UK and a household name amongst Londoners. With the vast majority of homeowners in the Capital owning a Banham lock or alarm for their properties, Banham have built an unrivalled reputation with their products and services over the last 90 years. Standing firm as the largest provider of security systems to homes in London and the South East of England, Banham are proud to have been at the forefront of burglary prevention since its inception.

Established in 1926 by the founder, William F Banham, who invented the first automatic door bolt, the company is still firmly linked to its ancestral roots. Still family-run and owned, Banham is one of the most well-respected firms in the sector. Currently under the direction of third generation Banham family, led by Chairman Charles Hallatt, William's grandson, the business has remained an industry leader over the decades due to its unparalleled services and reliable products of the highest quality. It is due to these inherent values that the company has continued to achieve year-on-year growth with stellar performance in a highly competitive marketplace.

Banham’s Executive Chairman, Charles Hallatt, said:
“We are so unbelievably proud to have reached our 90th anniversary. This is a significant moment for us not just as a company but also for the Banham family.
“My grandfather, William F Banham, started the company in 1926 when he invented the first automatic door bolt as a result of being burgled and not being able to get insurance. To think that from that moment 90 years ago, we are still here! To be known as leaders of our industry and iconic for our products is a really amazing feeling. We are excited for the next stage in our growth by continuing to provide the highest level of security and services to our customers and keeping people and property safe. Here’s to the next 90 years and more!”

From humble beginnings as a husband and wife team, the established business now has more than 350 employees – which includes 23 families – as well as six showrooms in London and the South East. The company moved to their RIBA-award winning headquarters in Wandsworth last year to allow further growth and expansion within the company for future decades to come.

Banham’s dedication to giving back to local communities has shone through during the company’s time, however none more so than in 2016. The company launched the Banham Academy, an ‘education leg’ to their business earlier this year. The Academy is designed to help young people develop the skills needed in order to gain apprenticeships within the company and wider security industry. Banham provides training to youths aged between 16 to 24 in order to provide them with a solid foundation for the future, while also securing the future of the sector.

The next 12 months and beyond is also exciting for the company. The business is currently experiencing extensive growth with recruitment as well as development within their product offerings. The company’s successes look set to continue thanks to their incredible dedication to staying leaders in the industry and continuing to keep both people and properties protected.
