Accessibility and Convenience Combined

GEZE’s TS 5000 ECline overhead door closer with guide rail combines accessibility and convenience in one innovative all-around closer.

GEZE, a leading manufacturer of door and window control systems has called the product the TS 5000 ECline, pronounced EASYLINE, to highlight the ease of opening the closer offers.

Providing barrier-free, easy to open doors the TS 5000 ECline is suitable for right and left single-action doors with a door leaf width of up to 1250mm. It also has integrated back check, and hydraulic latching action, and the closing speed can be individually adjusted.

In addition, the closer offers flexibility in installation as it can be installed on the door leaf on the hinge side or on the transom on the opposite hinge side and all functions can be adjusted from the front of the closer. The L version of the closer enables it to be mounted on the push side of the door.

It is part of the GEZE family of closers that have the same styling, perfect for when different closers are needed throughout a building, and it has the same fitting footprint as other GEZE closers allowing it to be fitted in place of other closers without having to re-drill the door.

With a closing force of EN 3-5 with variable adjustment the TS 5000 ECline is suitable for fire and smoke protection doors.

Andy Howland, Sales & Marketing Director of GEZE UK, said:

“The TS 5000 ECline is one of our most flexible closers and can be installed anywhere where the convenience of passing through a door easily is required and perfect for ensuring access for all.

Add in that it is suitable for smoke and fire protection doors and you have a great all-rounder!”

DHF announces plans to resume training in Ireland

Following a two-year ‘pause’ as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced its plan to resume its training programme in the Republic of Ireland.

In a very positive meeting held in Dublin on 28th April with Ireland-based members, DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, General Manager & Secretary, Michael Skelding, and Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Steve Hill, outlined the federation’s intention to recommence one and two-day training courses.

In July 2019, DHF held a one-day public Level 2 Award in Automated Gate and Traffic Barrier Safety in Ireland, and such was its success, a second public training day for installers and maintenance operatives of automated gates took place in February 2020, a course that was open to all, whether a member of DHF or not.  At the time, Patricia described the expansion of training into Ireland as a ‘leap of faith’:

“We were delighted by the uptake of training courses in Ireland in 2019, and again in February 2020 and had planned regular events to build on this success,” she explains.
“However, following the onset of ‘lockdown’ in March 2020, these had to be put on hold.  We are very pleased to be able to kickstart our training in Ireland once again, and following our meeting with members last month, it is evident there is a genuine enthusiasm for this.”

DHF’s offering will comprise two-day courses (which will remain as members’ private courses), and one-day courses, both of which will complement any future auditing requirements.  The one-day course will once again comprise five learning modules with a short examination following each and presenting examples of past failures and prosecutions, as well as giving the learner the ability to accurately conduct and document a risk assessment.

“Last month’s meeting was the first face-to-face gathering to take place since early 2020 and it was great to see so many members engaging with our training strategy.  Since the meeting we have already received bookings for training courses from members in and around the Dublin area for their staff and customers, and Senior Training and Compliance Officer Steve Hill is ready to start in July.” says Patricia.
“They continue to help DHF by promoting safe and compliant installation and maintenance of Automated Gates, Industrial Doors, Garage Doors, Doorsets including fire doorsets, and we are keen to grow our membership here.”

For further information on DHF training courses, please visit: https://www.dhfonline.org.uk/

Chemique Adhesives Provides the Perfect Bonding Solution for UK manufacturer of Fire Rated Door Systems

For over 35 years, Chemique Adhesives has always been committed to supporting its customers by providing technical advice and offering innovative adhesive solutions closely aligned to specific production requirements.

A customer that has benefited from this commitment is Solidcor, a manufacturer of fire-rated door systems based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Established in 2020, Solidcor specialises in fire-rated entrance doors for both re-fit and new-build markets. The company was previously outsourcing their door systems but decided to take full control of its production processes and create its own manufacturing facility.

Bob Lovegrove, Chemique Adhesives Business Development Manager said:
“Solidcor contacted us to see if we could assist in providing an application and adhesive process that could meet their stringent fire resistance testing requirements when manufacturing fire rated doors,”
“As solid timber core doors and coloured skins have grown in popularity, we had recently developed an adhesive ideal for this application that provides a superior bond strength at a competitive price,” explained Bob.
Samples of the solid timber core doors to be bonded were tested in the laboratory by the technical team at Chemique Adhesives and the test results confirmed that a one-component, polyurethane adhesive would be an ideal solution.
“This technically advanced adhesive is from our Solfre range of laminating adhesives and has been specially developed to meet the demands of Solidcor’s popular range of solid core doors,” commented Bob.
“This next generation adhesive adds so much more to the bond compared to other products on the market, for example, when bonding to difficult substrates with a low surface tension, you can be confident that the bond strength will stand the test of time.”

Depending on volume and output requirements, the adhesive can be applied manually or automatically and Chemique Adhesives offer a variety of application equipment tailored to suit individual needs.
“The solution provided by Chemique Adhesives was exactly what we had been looking for,” enthused Ashley Smith, Operations Manager at Solidcor.
“As this was a brand new process for us, we were more than pleased with Chemique’s knowledge and recommendations. As our range of doors have undergone rigorous safety checks including fire, smoke, weather, security, and endurance testing, it was vital that the adhesive used in the manufacturing process met all fire rating requirements and Chemique were able to supply this along with a cost-effective dispensing system,” continued Ashley.

Solfre 3194 has been specially designed for bonding rigid plastic materials such as PVC, ABS and GRP as well as many standard materials such as timber, rigid foam insulation and steel.

“We have established a great working relationship with the Chemique team and have some exciting plans to further improve our production processes, so we look forward to collaborating with them again in the near future,” commented Ashley.

Chemique Adhesives’ Total Service Package includes tailor-made adhesive solutions combined with full engineering and technical support. A team of engineers are on hand to provide regular servicing and support in case of any breakdowns or issues, which can be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

About Chemique Adhesives

Established in 1985, Chemique Adhesives is a UK leading manufacturer of high performance industrial adhesives and adhesive application equipment. Serving a wide range of industries including aerospace, automotive, commercial manufacturing, composites, construction, foam, furniture, marine and transportation, Chemique Adhesives can offer specialist bonding solutions for a multitude of applications whilst providing the highest level of service, support, and advice.

Watch the Windows: Eight things which could Null your Car Insurance

Motorists are being warned of the risk of invalidating their car insurance and being asked to check their policies by experts.

The car leasing experts at LeaseCar.uk have highlighted eight ways drivers in the UK can null their insurance without realising.

Reading and understanding the intricacies of car insurance policies is essential as there are several things such as the wrong home address that can invalidate the policy.

Not only can these things void insurance policies and cause an inability to claim – but they can also carry hefty financial penalties and sometimes legal ramifications too.

A spokesperson for LeaseCar.uk said:
“It can be easy to gloss over the terms and conditions of many things, especially your car insurance – but this could in fact put you at risk of invalidating it.
“Small changes to your lifestyle may seem trivial but it is important that you notify your insurance provider as to avoid any charges and be fully covered.
“There are also things to bear in mind whilst driving to ensure that if the unfortunate occurrence of an accident does occur, you can claim".

Misjudging your mileage

When filling out any insurance policy it will ask you to estimate your annual mileage and this needs to be as accurate as possible. Taking your commute as well as your leisure activities into account will provide a semi accurate number however, it’s best to allow some tolerance for those unexpected trips.

New job

The nature of your occupation has an effect on the price of your car insurance. This is because some jobs such as taxi drivers, food delivery drivers and couriers spend more time on the roads, and are therefore more likely to be involved in a motoring incident. Make sure to be accurate with your job title because even a subtle difference can affect your policy.

Change of address

The location in which you live has an effect on your premium, this is for a variety of reasons including crime and traffic density. By changing your address and not informing your insurer, you could be getting a cheaper premium and this can invalidate your policy.

Looking after the vehicle

Keeping your car roadworthy is important not only for road safety but also to ensure your insurance policy remains valid. MOT’s and services should be carried out at regular intervals to keep the policy valid.

Window tints

Any modifications made by you or the previous owner before taking out a policy must be reported to the insurance provider – no matter how small they may be. If the work is yet to be carried out, it is also essential the modifications stay within the legal limit. For example, window tints on side windows must let at least 70% of light through. Any more than this and they become illegal.

Fronting

Parents or older drivers who falsely claim they are the main driver of a vehicle when it is in fact a younger, less experienced driver can in fact render the insurance void. Although this often makes insurance policies cheaper for young drivers, it is also illegal.

Declaration of points

Insurance providers must be aware of any current points on your licence – these usually stay on your licence for four years. If you try to claim on your insurance and the provider finds out you haven’t declared your points (or an incorrect amount) they can refuse to pay out. Driving penalties increase the perceived risk on the road, so it’s best to think twice before trying to get a cheap quote.

Commuting

Ensuring you’re covered to drive to work can stop you from getting in trouble with your insurer. Not declaring your car’s class of use can be a serious offence and you won’t be covered by your insurance provider if you were commuting at the time.

8 Ways Tradespeople can Make their Work more Sustainable

For World Environment Day (5th June 2022), an expert has shared advice on how tradespeople can make their work more sustainable.

Improving sustainability can benefit both the planet and your business, as customers are growing increasingly likely to favour tradespeople with green credentials.

Recent research by ElectricalDirect, the specialist retailer of electrical products, found that a quarter (25%) of Brits are now more interested in sustainability than they were a few years ago, and over a fifth (22%) of tradespeople have been questioned about the environmental impact of their work over the last year.

However, four in five (80%) say that they don’t know how to make their services more sustainable.

So ElectricalDirect has partnered with William Hobbs, sustainability and recycling expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk, to provide some expert tips on how you can make your trade business more environmentally friendly.

1) Switch to digital

Consider how much paper you'd save if you ditched paperwork in favour of an online system. You'll also benefit from automated processes and workflow efficiencies.

2) Invest in equipment

When you need new tools or equipment, invest in some that are long-lasting and built to last. What may appear to be a significant outlay at first will almost certainly pay off in the long run.

3) Recycle wherever possible

Instead of throwing waste away, consider how to reuse or repurpose it. If items cannot be reused, recycle as many as possible so that they don’t end up in landfills.

4) Go electric

When it’s time to upgrade your work van, make the switch to an electric vehicle. This will make each journey and job more eco-friendly, and EV Car Charging is now easier than ever.

5) Learn new skills

Stay up to date on how to install and maintain the latest green technologies, such as EV car charging units and heat pumps. This will help your business stay relevant to changing customer needs and open your company up to new customer bases.

6) Source local parts

To reduce your carbon footprint, look for parts and materials that are produced and sold closer to home.

7) Reduce plastic and chemical usage

Making simple but practical swaps on small items you use daily can reduce your overall environmental impact without costing too much. For example, ditching single-use plastic dust sheets for reusable or biodegradable versions, and switching white spirit for cleaner alternatives.

8) Leave your worksite clean

When you leave a job, make sure to clean up properly. Off-cuts and bits of packaging are easy to overlook but could easily end up impacting local wildlife habitats. Take an extra couple of minutes to sweep the area for litter. This will also prevent you from accidentally leaving bits of your kit behind, and allow you to re-use any spare parts and materials.

For more information about how you can make your trade business more sustainable, visit: www.electricaldirect.co.uk

UAP Launches its K4 Aluminium Box with Kinetica+ K4 Horizontal and Vertical Cylinder

UAP, the specialist in locks and hardware for doors and windows, has launched its K4 Aluminium box containing two Kinetica+ K4 thumb-turn euro cylinders, one vertical and one horizontal.

Accredited through ‘Secured by Design’ and with a guaranteed one-hour fire rating, the K4 Aluminium box comes with a £4000 anti-burglary guarantee.

Due to the success of the Kinetica K4+ vertical cylinder, UAP launched its horizontal counterpart to improve installation time and reduce security risks for the end-user.

Both cylinders are an advanced locking solution that puts safety, hygiene, and easy-fit functionality at the forefront to ensure our nation's homes are kept safe. Kinetica K4+ vertical and horizontal cylinders have a thumb-turn warm touch bio cap, but also include three bio keys as standard. UAP’s keys include an additive containing anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and have been tested to ISO 22196:2011 standards.

The vertical design features six dimple pins and offers over 200,000 various key combinations. The newly launched horizontal cylinder, however, boasts six dimple pins and five laser track side pins to improve security. In doing so, the keyway is much smaller, enabling only one orientation of key insertion and therefore making it much harder for opportunists to attack the cylinder.

Kamila Kasperowicz, Marketing Director at UAP Ltd, said:
“Our Kinetica K4+ horizontal and vertical cylinders are suitable for both domestic and commercial properties. Following heavy investment and our commitment to quality, we’ve designed solutions with the installer and end-user in mind; providing ease of installation, maximum security and improved performance.”

The K4 Aluminium box is a compact solution containing the industry’s leading cylinders for safety and security. Now available, Kinetica+ K4 cylinders are reliable and robust, recognised with a three-star BSI Kitemark and a Sold Secure diamond standard.

DHF contributes to Build UK’s new Common Assessment Standard

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced its support for the new Common Assessment Standard, created by representative organisation for the construction industry, Build UK. And, as a member of Build UK, DHF has contributed to its formation.

The new Common Assessment Standard, which has been endorsed by the Construction Leadership Council, means that sub-contractors need only be certified once a year by a single recognised assessment body before tendering for work with main contractors and clients who specify it.

This is a significant improvement on the current system where different main contractors insist on their own prequalification questionnaires being completed meaning organisations are forced to duplicate time and effort. Build UK estimates this wasteful process costs the construction industry as much as £1 billion each year.

The Common Assessment Standard, which is regularly reviewed, comprises an industry-agreed question set based on existing PQ questionnaires, including PAS 91, and corresponding assessment standards, with two levels of certification: desktop and site-based.

Companies apply to a Recognised Assessment Body for the certification level that is most appropriate for their business based on a range of factors including trade, size, and the requirements of their clients. For businesses that employ fewer than 10 employees and have a turnover of under £1.8 million or a balance sheet total less than £1.8 million, the assessment standards will be applied in a proportionate way.

A guide to the question set has been published to help companies prepare for an audit by a Recognised Assessment Body. The Common Assessment Standard has been made possible thanks to a data-sharing agreement with four recognised assessment bodies: Achilles, CHAS, Constructionline and CQMS.

Main contractors using the Common Assessment Standard include Balfour Beatty, Bouygues UK, Clancy Group, HS2, Mace and Sir Robert McAlpine.
“DHF is a great supporter of the Common Assessment Standard and encourages eligible members to sign up to this excellent initiative,” explains DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“We have contributed to the questions included in the PQQ (Pre-Qualifying Questionnaire) and hope that members will benefit from a standardised form. This standard goes some way to raising the standards in the industry, so members do not have to complete a series of PQQ’s, the one is shared with all companies signing up to this great initiative. The new approach will transform the prequalification process and make it work better for both suppliers and clients.”
