Excel’s roller shutter durability showcased as product makes it to twenty six years

Excel update roller shutter with efficient electronic product
for maximum security

Yorkshire-based Excel Industrial Doors and Shutters made company history this month after they visited Huddersfield-based Crosland Moor Community Shop to replace a roller shutter they originally installed a staggering 26-years ago.

The original roller shutter, which showcases the durability and quality of Excel’s shutter products, became tired after protecting the company premises for over a quarter century and needed to be upgraded to a more modern and efficient model.

Duane Swift, managing director of Excel Industrial Doors and Shutters, said:
“We were absolutely delighted to hear from the Crosland Moor Community Shop, a company we worked with back in 1990. The fact that our roller shutter was still standing until just recently showcases how long lasting, effective and secure our products are, and we urge shop owners to secure their premises with such a sound investment.”

The original roller shutter installed 26 years ago

The original roller shutter was installed back in 1990, and after an initial telephone consultation with the Huddersfield Company, Excel organised an on-site appointment to take initial measurements and discuss the new shutter upgrade.

The newly installed roller shutter, which was manufactured at Excel’s Huddersfield head office, was electronically operated for ease by the means of a key-switch. Excel’s reputation within the Huddersfield and surrounding Yorkshire area is exceptional when it comes to health and safety with electronic commercial roller shutters, all of which come with a manual override facility which can be used in the event of a mains failure.

The new roller shutter was also constructed from 3” pre-galvanised solid steel lath with 65mm guide channels to optimise security.
“Hopefully this new roller shutter will last just as long for the Crosland Moor Community Shop,” added Duane. “We pride ourselves on high standard customer service, quality products and the compliance of health and safety legislation and that’s why we regularly see repeat custom, even decades down the line. I am absolutely thrilled that the Crosland Moor Community Shop had such a pleasant service with us, and I hope to work with them again in the future.”
Excel is a leading roller shutter manufacturer based in Huddersfield. For more information on how the company can help you secure premises through the means of a commercial roller shutter please do not hesitate to contact the team on 0800 135 7834.

Garador Stresses Winter Security Importance

With long dark winter nights and chilly temperatures, burglars are often active at this time of year and so garages can be a key target for burglars.

Valuable equipment is stored in garages, such as cars, tools, home office materials, gym equipment and much more. Plus once inside a garage, a burglar can often more easily get through to the side or back of the house to gain entry there, out of sight of any passersby.

UK garage door manufacturer Garador is well aware of this and has developed a range of Guardian garage doors which are Secured by Design accredited. The Secured by Design accreditation shows that they have been tested by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) to withstand a break-in by a burglar. The Guardian range is Britain’s first range of Up and Over doors, and includes the Carlton, Horizon and Salisbury models.

Garador offers a range of garage doors, from Up and Over doors and roller doors through to sectional doors, each with proven security features. Ensuring a secure garage door in any build, is a big selling point for builders and a big plus for home owners – and the best choice has to be a door from Garador’s specialist Guardian range.

The Guardian range has been engineered specifically to offer an extra level of security – without compromising on the design and functionality you have come to expect from a Garador garage door. Guardian range doors have additional back braces on the inside of the door for greater rigidity, as well as improved and reinforced locking systems to prevent an attack on the locking mechanism.

Visit www.garador.co.uk to find out more about Garador’s garage door range, including it’s Guardian doors.

Steel windows and doorsets provide mews with an urban aesthetic

Formerly a disused eighties office building, Opal Mews is a development in North West London, by Clifton Securities, which comprises of five contemporary homes.

Nominated for a Civic Trust award, the three-and five-bedroom properties with light-filled, open plan interiors owe much of their success to the 60 steel windows and six large double door sets manufactured and installed by Steel Window Association, Member REA Metal Windows.

To create Opal Mews, Clifton Securities stripped the structure back to the concrete frame and removed the original uPVC windows. The new steel windows were manufactured by REA Metal Windows using W40 sections while the door sets are tubular steel with the largest measuring over 2.5m wide and 2.3m high.

Each of the steel frames was hot dip galvanised and then finished in a factory-applied, and maintenance-free, polyester powder coating in RAL 7012 matt grey. This provides a crisp, industrial aesthetic that contrasts well with the various pastel coloured renders to the front facade of the mews. Each of the steel windows is glazed with high-performance argon gas-filled units that have centre pane U-value of 1.2W/m²k.

The W40 system, available from Steel Window Association members, offers full compliance with Part L of the 2013 Building Regulations so may be employed for new build and refurbishment projects. The range includes doorsets and screens and the profile accommodates 28mm thick insulated glazing units. This means triple glazing becomes an option.

From a life cycle perspective W40 windows are extremely durable and should have a life span of at least eighty years. The main elements of a steel window are ultimately completely recyclable and are recognised by the BRE ‘Green Guide', which gives them an above average B rating.

Simeon Anderson, Development Director of Clifton Securities, comments:
"As designers and developers, we like the honest aesthetic of existing buildings and the classic industrial look of steel windows is very appealing in urban environments where prolific natural light is welcome. I went to Liverpool to meet with the team at REA Metal Windows and they were great; really good right through the whole process and they helped us tailor some fantastic solutions."

GEZE doors help create a dramatic new entrance at Theatre Royal Glasgow

Like many Victorian buildings, Glasgow’s oldest theatre suffered from limited accessibility and cramped, poorly functioning space. Designed to enhance the audience’s journey from ‘street to seat,’ the stunning new elliptical foyer extension by Page\Park Architects has brought the Theatre Royal Glasgow firmly into the 21st Century.

As part of the solution to make the theatre accessible to all, GEZE UK was commissioned by Gray and Dick to install automatic sliding doors to create an entrance lobby on either side of the new foyer and a further set of automatic sliding doors were installed to access the City’s only public roof terrace. Allgood PLC also specified a number of the company’s manual closers throughout.

With up to 1,500 people using the theatre per performance, two new entrances were created on Hope Street and Cowcaddens Road and GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT single operators with ISO doors and pocket screens were specified to create entrance lobbies. A lobby contributes to sustainability by ensuring heat loss and gain is minimised without limiting accessibility. Thanks to its slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive SL operator is almost invisible in elevation, making it ideal for elegant glass façades. The entrance was fitted with girder profiles which hide the steel work above the door and enhance the slim profile of the doors.

Powerdrive PL operators have been fitted to the two 2.7m high and 1.6m wide ISO glass doors with girder profiles and pockets screens that provide access to the roof terrace and give theatre-goers the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular city vista from the bar. The Powerdrive PL has been specifically designed to provide reliable opening and closing when used in installations where extremely large and heavy doors have been specified. Throughout the rest of the foyer, internal doors have been fitted with GEZE’s range of Boxer manual closers, including the standard closer, electro mechanical hold-open closers and units with sequential closing. The Boxer is an integrated closer, installed completely inside the door leaf, so that the guide rail can only be seen when the door is open.

Alex Reedijk, General Director at Scottish Opera said:
“We are delighted with the audiences’ reaction to the new foyers and that they have been nationally recognised with the Scottish Design Award and the RIAS Cultural Building of the Year Award and nominated for the AJ 100 Cultural Building of the Year. The Theatre Royal is now absolutely fit for purpose for the 21st Century and GEZE UK’s involvement and the work of the many other talented companies and individuals behind-the-scenes has been integral to the project.”

Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK said:
“The new foyer extension has transformed Theatre Royal Glasgow and created a new landmark building for the city. The fact that GEZE’s automatic and manual door controls were chosen throughout this prestigious project is a testament to their aesthetics, functionality and efficiency.”

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic operators, manual door closers and window technology products call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk.

Lancia Aurelia Prototype offered at Bonhams Grand Palais

The oldest surviving Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider, a rare factory prototype, will be offered at Bonhams 4 February Grand Palais Sale, estimated at €900,000-1,300,000.

In the post-war era, the first cars to emerge needed to be stylish, exciting, and full of ‘La Dolce Vita’. The 1950 launch of the Lancia Aurelia provided this beautifully.

The first production car ever to use a V-6 engine, the powerful and revolutionary Aurelia was a masterpiece of Italian design and engineering. In its two years of manufacture, just 240 cars were built. This makes the motor car offered at Bonhams sale – the oldest surviving Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider, chassis ‘B24S1002’ – incredibly rare.

Philip Kantor, Bonhams European Head of Motoring, said:
“A rare factory prototype, the motor car offered was used as the display car for the 1955 motor show in both Brussels and Geneva. Offered from long term private ownership, the Aurelia boasts a continuous history and is fully restored to original specification.”
Fast-forward twenty years and the Italian motoring powerhouse brought to life the Lancia Stratos. Vastly different to its 1950s predecessor, the Stratos boasted the signature, geometric styling popular of the decade, coupled with speeds of up to 225 km/h.

A limited production 'homologation special', the Lancia Stratos is historically significant as the first car from a major manufacturer conceived specifically for rallying – it was the spearhead of the brand’s international rally campaign in the 1970s. The production Stratos of 1972 retained the striking 'wedge' styling of its forbear, but employed the powerful Ferrari Dino 2.4-litre V6 engine.

Finished in orange with tan alcantara interior, the highly original 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale Coupé offered at Bonhams sale is offered at €350,000-450,000.

Bonhams Grand Palais Sale takes place in Paris on 4 February.

Ironmongery to complete the steel window aesthetic

With their slender sections and narrow sightlines, steel windows and doors contribute architectural style and fluency to a building but the look is incomplete without the associated handles, stays and hinges.

Steel Window Association members offer a wide range of bespoke ironmongery, embracing everything from items with a conservation-style period finish to those that make a cutting edge design statement.

Ironmongery plays a big part in the way a window functions and its overall security and fit so all fittings are tailored to suit the style of the window and the needs of the end user.

Window handles are available in a range of styles including straight and standard scroll in both locking and non-locking versions. Other options are butterfly handles, folding openers and notch bow handles. Stays can be selected in sliding versions as well as more ornate monkey tail or shepherd’s crook designs. Hinges include extended friction and close fitting styles.

For an individual look, a mould can be made and the fitting produced in a traditional way using a casting process. With this method, almost any existing handle or stay can be replicated. Locking mechanisms to doors include traditional mortice locks with lever handles and shoot bolts. Less obtrusive options comprise variable geometry hinges, friction pivots and multi-point locking bolts concealed within the profiles.

Ironmongery is available from Steel Window Association members in a variety of finishes; including satin chrome and bronze toned, as well as more ornate brass products or polyester powder coated in a wide range of colour options.

For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk or call 0844 249 1355.

Introducing Dorma Mundus Patch Fittings, Unique And Revloutionary

DORMA has launched its new range of MUNDUS patch fittings. Providing multi-dimensional adjustment of the door even whilst mounted, the patches offer ease of installation for retrofit or new build projects.

In addition MUNDUS Premium fittings offer a unique solution for Laminated Safety Glass using Clamp & Glue Technology – MUNDUS patches are designed and manufactured for reliable and long-term performance.

Installation is simple and flexible. The MUNDUS patch fitting is mounted directly onto the glass, with the cover cap simply clipped over the base fitting. When using LSG, DORMA’s Clamp & Glue Technology, the base fitting is secured with an adhesive, injected through inlet holes to ensure a permanent fit. The adhesive cures in a few minutes – leaving the glass held firmly in place.

The new generation of MUNDUS patch fittings is suitable for glass thicknesses of 8-22mm, and is capable of accommodating door weights of up to 200kg, with the flexibility to provide door pivot points between 52 and 73mm.

The range of fittings is designed to suit all 24 standard types of toughened-glass door assembly as well as room structures with 90° angled fittings. MUNDUS patch fittings are available in a range of colours and materials to adapt to a variety of architectural finishes and interior design schemes. This is complemented by upgraded trims, which create a shadowing effect to ensure no visible fixings – a key requirement for many customers.

Archie Teagle, Product Marketing Manager at DORMA said:
“Our new MUNDUS patch fittings offer installers a high quality product with multi-dimensional adjustability that is easy to fit, giving installers flexibility for a wide range of applications and glass thickness. The reliability offered by the MUNDUS range is absolutely crucial as it is imperative patch fittings can cope with the weight of the glass.”

For further information on DORMA’s range of access control solutions, please visit: www.dorma.com or follow @DORMAUK
