P C Henderson Hardware Specified for Elephant House In Wales

P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding 307 door hardware has been specified for the main access door to an elephant house at Skandavale Monastery in Carmarthen, Wales.

The monastery, which is home to a resident community of 25 monks and nuns, welcomes over 90,000 pilgrims to worship in its three multi-faith temples each year. As well as its temples, the monastery is also home to an onsite hospice and animal sanctuary.

The most famous resident of the monastery’s animal sanctuary is Valli, a three tonne Sri Lankan elephant who resides in an enormous purpose built elephant house. Built just five years ago, the elephant house features heated walls, sandpits, a waterfall, plunge pool as well as a large sliding access door, measuring 3.9m x 3.2m, which Valli opens herself.

After just five years the original sliding door hardware (not manufactured by P C Henderson) was unable to cope with the force in which Valli uses her trunk and head to open the door and so the track collapsed, meaning a replacement was needed.

Brother Stephan, who resides at Skandavale, contacted P C Henderson to specify a track which would be robust and hard wearing enough to cope with Valli’s strength. The door itself weighs 500kg but due to the extra force being used, our Straight Sliding 307 system was specified, which can cater for doors weighing up to 2000kg.

Brother Stephan commented:
“Prior to the new home being built, Valli lived in a different elephant house which utilised P C Henderson’s sliding door hardware for the main access door. This lasted the full lifetime of the home, approximately 15 years, despite the huge scale of force being subjected by Valli. When the hardware on the new home started to bend after just 5 years, there was no doubt that we would go back to using P C Henderson.

“We’re very pleased with the new system, which is now fully installed. It’s easy to see that the design and material of the track and components are of the highest quality and we’re confident it will withstand the test of Valli over the years”.

Situated in over 300 acres of woodland and pasture in South West Wales, Skandavale Monastery is ran entirely by full time volunteers and relies solely on voluntary donations to keep it running.

P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding system is available in five different ranges to cater for maximum door weights of between 150kg and 2000kg, making it ideal for anything from light commercial doors right up to heavy and large industrial applications.

The system is available for wooden and metal doors and allows doors to slide to one or both sides and are also suitable to cover any width of opening.

Rare Aston Martin once owned by Sir Elton John CBE for auction

A rare Aston Martin formerly owned by one of the biggest music stars on the planet is being offered for sale at the Silverstone Auctions Race Retro Classic Car Sale on the 24th and 25th February.

Sir Elton’s hand-built 1997 V8 Vantage V550, which he ordered new from the world-famous Aston Martin factory in Newport Pagnell, is expected to fetch up to a quarter of a million pounds at auction.

Looking amazing in black with a black leather interior, the car once owned by the man who wrote such mega-hits as A Candle in the Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocket Man and Circle of Life, is capable of 0-60mph in under five seconds and hitting a top speed of 186mph – an astonishing feat for such a large car.

Adam Rutter, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, said:
“Sir Elton is a global superstar and is still making headlines around the world, so it’s a pleasure to offer for sale this Aston Martin that he ordered new back in 1997.
“As well as enjoying celebrity ownership, this stunning V8 Vantage has been maintained regardless of expense and has a mere 8,663 miles on the clock, that’s equivalent to being driven about 400 miles only a year!”

Step inside the cabin and this must-have motor still has a ‘new car’ smell and is swimming in sumptuous wood and leather. In addition, it is thought that only 240 standard V550s were ever made, making them highly collectable no matter who the previous owner was.

The exterior is also a beauty to behold. A deep front spoiler, lower stance and flared wheel arches combine to give it a fearsome appearance.

Recently chassis number #70174 has undergone considerable expenditure at respected marque specialist Rikki Cann. It even has its original service books and invoices.

Adam added: “Our Race Retro auction is a rare opportunity to own one of the last coach-built Aston Martins. If that wasn’t enough, then throw in the fact it was ordered new by Sir Elton John and you have a truly special car.”

For more about this 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Silverstone Auctions Race Retro Classic Car Sale, which takes place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, visit www.silverstoneauctions.com.

Cupid's arrow strikes a blow for Office Romance

Research shows that only 12% of company managers have been provided with training on managing workplace romances.

Moreover, 43% of HR staff have encountered a workplace romance despite 99% of policies on workplace romances stating that romantic relationships between supervisors and their staff are not allowed.

Employees falling for each other isn’t rare. Naturally, close relationships will form between people who spend large parts of their lives together. One study from 2011 found that 30% of office romances led to marriage. But that still leaves 70% that don’t end with wedding bells.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, Jayne Hart from The HR Dept Newcastle discusses some of the more troublesome issues surrounding office romances:

“Whilst nobody enjoys telling Cupid where he can and can’t aim his arrow in the workplace, there are times when senior management really should step in. For instance, when a manager and their direct subordinate enter into a relationship. After all, the superior’s impartiality and authority will be compromised, and this can affect a team’s morale. You certainly don’t want employees accusing a manager of weakness or favouritism – and this is if the relationship doesn’t turn sour with the problems that it could bring like the manager being accused of an abuse of power.

“It’s also your duty to ensure that, if you find that an employee fancies a co-worker who does not reciprocate, any pestering must be dealt with the moment the issue is raised. The last thing you want is a sexual harassment tribunal case.”

Some of us enjoy a gossip, and the relationships between co-workers can be prime subject matter. It’s important to ensure this doesn’t go too far and reduce productivity. Malicious gossip is very corrosive to team morale. It can also start cliques and bring other problematic issues. Therefore, it’s worth making sure this doesn’t get out of control.

Jayne concludes: “Offering supervisors some training on managing workplace romances will be beneficial. Even if you don’t have an official policy and are seeing a romance blossom, you may need to remind the happy couple to remain professional in work. And if you think it’s required and fits the culture of your business, you could draw up a policy on office romances.”

A Uniform Refurbishment for GEZE UK

GEZE UK responded to the call “to be the best” as part of a three-year, multi-million pound make-over, of the National Army Museum, in London – making it more accessible and providing enhanced visitor facilities.

The reconfiguration of its 1970 and 80’s interior has transformed the museum in Chelsea. Its five themed galleries, laid out over four floors now centres around a light and airy atrium.

In addition to the permanent galleries, the museum includes temporary exhibition space, a study centre and education spaces, a café, shop and Play Base, for children up to the age of eight.

It is hoped that the £23.75 million re-development – part-funded by the National Lottery – will open doors to new audiences enabled by GEZE products fitted around the building.

Included in the re-fit were five pairs of TSA 160 NT automatic swing door operators. These were fitted to the corridor and entrance to the museum’s board room and the corridor and two doors to Play Base.

The TSA 160 NTs are electronically controlled, hydraulic swing door mechanisms which are ideal for heavy doors in high traffic areas, increasing accessibility. They are extremely reliable and require little maintenance.

There are also 10 TS 550 E floor springs and 60 Boxer integrated door closers fitted to manual doors throughout the building – from study areas and corridors to behind-the-scenes facilities.

GEZE’s architectural ironmongery was specified by Interior Hardware, of Aldridge, in the West Midlands.

The museum was reconfigured to a design by architects BDP with exhibition fitout by design agency Event to create a more welcoming, accessible and flexible environment, enabling the National Army Museum to manage increasing visitor figures, predicted to reach 400,000 by 2026.

It is intended to act as a bridge between the British Army and wider society - encouraging greater public engagement and understanding of defence and security, both past and present. The new building now houses 2,500 objects - from the 17th century to present day.

These include artefacts such as Lawrence of Arabia’s original desert robes, Florence Nightingale’s medals and the uniform worn by Her Majesty, The Queen, when as Princess Elizabeth she held the honorary commission of Brigadier in the Women's Royal Army Corps from 1949-52.

Andy Howland, GEZE UK’s Sales and Marketing Director, said that he was delighted that GEZE products were used in the landmark building:

“It is immensely satisfying to know that GEZE products are integrated into a building which has houses an archive of such national importance. The redevelopment of the National Army Museum has led to a ‘must-see’ visitor attraction, ready to meet the needs of its many audiences for years to come.”

Mike O’Connor the National Army Museum’s Director states:
“The architect’s vision of opening up the building and making areas more accessible has been furthered by the installation of various GEZE products to the highly trafficked areas and doors at the museum as part of the redevelopment. These additions, have made transiting areas much easier for our visitors.”

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic operators, manual door closers and window technology products call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk.

Urmet on the Greenwich Peninsula

Urmet has supplied its IP-based door entry solution to a £120 million residential development in London on a historic stretch of the Thames.

Telegraph Works in Greenwich is a landmark project that includes an 18-storey tower, three eight-storey buildings, apartment blocks and townhouses. The works are by Weston Homes and Cathedral Group, operating in a joint venture with regeneration and property developer U+I. The result has been 272 new dwellings situated in waterfront grounds reclaimed from land once used for rope-making and submarine cables.

Urmet’s Elekta Steel IP PoE entry panels have been fitted to eight entrance points at Telegraph Works. Elekta Steel is a vandal-resistant version of Elekta, a class-leading security solution. The unit’s one-piece stainless steel body with flush moving elements reduces potential for damage by vandals or would-be intruders, as well as providing IK09 impact resistance.

The LCD colour display unit in the Elekta panels ensures easy use for callers and can also show messages. There are 16 courtyard houses at Telegraph Works across a two-acre development and, if required, the panels can show visitors their optimum walking route to their destination within the complex.

Residents touchscreens powered by Android

Residents at Telegraph Works are able to screen visitors and communicate with them using one of the 256 Urmet Max Lite IP PoE seven-inch touchscreens that have been installed across the site. The flexible platform of the touchscreen allows Urmet to work with other manufacturers to implement third-party apps that meet the precise requirements of property developers. As a tablet-style device, the touchscreen employs swipe movements familiar to any smartphone user, with a high resolution 1024 x 600 pixel 16:9 screen.

Extensive access control

Site designers at Telegraph Works have also provided additional access control for residents, property managers and approved contractors. These security measures include installation of Urmet’s P60 access control readers, which grant or deny access to stairwells and corridors in the apartment buildings and tower. They can be used with all FDI-Urmet proximity cards, fobs and remotes, as well as any third-party card that employs Wiegand 13.56MHz. Custom finishes are available to meet precise design requirements and there are multicolour LEDs.

Mark Hagger, Urmet’s Sales & Marketing Director, said:

“The Telegraph Works buildings, with their distinctive mosaic facades, set a high premium on design. This statement was matched internally by the selection of Max touchscreens powered by Android within the apartments. The scalable nature of the iPervoice door entry and intercom suite will ensure that our products will continue to meet evolving needs as the site develops.”
The architect for the project is Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, which is also responsible for another recent Urmet project, Cobalt Place in Battersea. Sales launch at Telegraph Works have begun and a quota of the homes has been made available as shared ownership for people who live or work in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Telegraph Works is located in the south-west of Greenwich Peninsula. It features tree-lined groves, allotments and a secret garden.

There is associated landscaping, play space, commercial units and infrastructure works across this 198,000 sq ft location that was once the site of warehouses and a cable factory. The surrounding Greenwich Peninsula covers 150 acres and stretches along 1.6 miles of the Thames. £8.4 billion will be invested in the district by various stakeholders over the next 20 years.

Winston Churchill’s Daimler Heads for Grand Avenue Show

Churchill's Daimler DB18 Drophead

It is not often that a car can claim to have shaped history but the historical importance of a distinguished Daimler appearing on The Grand Avenue at the London Classic Car Show (15-18 February) should not be underestimated.

It is not only the sole surviving pre-war DB18 Drophead Coupe but, more significantly, also the very car used by Winston Churchill for his political campaigns between 1944 and 1949.

As he toured the country, Churchill would sit on the rear deck addressing packed crowds via a loud speaker system fitted on top of the car’s bonnet. The DB18 was deemed appropriate as its relatively compact size ensured the huge numbers packing the streets could have a good view of their national hero.

As currently depicted in the Oscar nominated Darkest Hour movie, Churchill was without doubt one of the most inspirational and charismatic leaders in British history, and during the Second World War the driving force against Nazi Germany. This extraordinary Daimler played its part, too.

Announced in 1939 just before the outbreak of hostilities, the DB18 was the ultimate version of Daimler’s famous Fifteen model. It was the first Daimler to boast independent suspension and was powered by an enlarged, 2,522cc version of the overhead-valve six first introduced in 1933.

An initial production run of 23 Drophead Coupés was planned for 1939, but production was soon halted when war broke out and didn’t resume until 1945. Adding to the disruption, only eight of the original cars had been built when Daimler’s factory was destroyed during the Blitz of 1940 and five of those were destroyed during the attack. Today only one of the surviving three DB18s exists: chassis number 49531 – Winston Churchill’s car with its unique Carlton Carriage Company designed drophead coupe body.

The remarkable machine has just been returned to its former splendor having undergone a major £120,000 restoration and now joins more than 50 of the world’s finest automotive creations parading up and down The Grand Avenue runway, the central feature running almost the entire length of ExCeL within the expanded The London Classic Car Show.

“This very special Daimler not only has enormous provenance in the classic car circles as the only surviving DB18 Drophead Coupe but is also a car which played a major role in shaping the the history of this county and, indeed, the world – it ticks all the boxes,” said Bas Bungish, Event Director.

“It’s presence at The London Classic Car Show is all the more pertinent, too, with the Darkest Hour putting the spotlight on Churchill’s incredible leadership at the box office and actor Gary Oldman tipped for an Oscar for his depiction of the the great man.”
