Designed by Reiach and Hall Architects for property development specialists Redevco, the refurbishment included the complete revitalisation of the building’s internal space. Appointed to strip out the 90,000 sq ft interior, install new building services, raised access floors, improve common areas, install a new lift system and completely redecorate - main contractor Interserve, part of the international support and services and construction Interserve Group, was also required to install a feature entrance befitting of such a high-profile location.
Delivering elegance, functionality and improving the building’s use of natural daylight – whilst also guaranteeing smooth and reliable access – the sophisticated DORMA KTV Atrium Glass revolving door proved ideal.
These resulting energy efficiency savings mean that, whilst revolving doors have a higher initial cost than conventional automatic swing and sliding doors, in the medium to long term revolving doors are more cost effective.
As the showcase of the refurbishment, it was vital that the new entrance also made a positive impact in terms of aesthetics and functionality. Once again, DORMA’s KTV Glass Atrium revolving door ticked all the right boxes. The all-glass revolving door can harmonise with virtually any environment to add a stunning, contemporary finish to a building’s interior.
Completing the specification and ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Equality Act, DORMA also supplied its ED 100 low energy swing door operator and AD 4000 Panic Touchbar. Used to create an emergency exit and disabled access door, the use of the DORMA ED 100 also helps to reduce unnecessary heat loss and contribute to the reduction of the building’s overall carbon footprint – a prerequisite in contemporary building products and systems.
The visually striking DORMA revolving door, and the additional swing door operator and panic bar, have helped to enhance the stylish, contemporary aesthetic of this prestigious redevelopment in the heart of Glasgow’s principal civic square. Originally built in 1979, George House’s new-look entrance offers the perfect welcome for a newly refurbished building which, whilst staying true to its past, is also fit for the future.
