The New Jaguar Xe: Better-Connected By Far

A smooth, supple ride, exceptionally sharp steering, quiet, luxurious cabin and seamless connectivity – the new Jaguar XE delivers in all respects and is equipped with a wide range of state-of-the art technologies designed to make every journey an even more enjoyable experience.

The new XE’s InControl infotainment system is designed around an 8-inch touchscreen. A clear, intuitive user interface gives quick, easy access to all features and functions, and voice control using plain speech means that drivers can keep their eyes on the road at all times.

Dr Mike Bell, Jaguar’s Global Connected Car Director said:
“In-car technologies in this ever-more connected and fast-paced world are an integral part of your driving experience. With the all-new XE we’re introducing an entire suite of cutting-edge driver aids and entertainment systems. Designed and developed from scratch, they will ensure that every journey you take is simpler, more relaxing, safer, and effortlessly enjoyable.”
Smartphones are changing the way people interact with the world around them – the new XE ensures that drivers stay connected. Jaguar InControl Remote allows users of iOS and Android smartphones to connect to the car from wherever they are and control a range of vehicle functions. These include seven-day timed pre-setting of the XE’s climate control system, locking or unlocking the doors, or starting the engine.

Jaguar InControl Apps allows users to seamlessly access smartphone apps through the vehicle’s touchscreen, making it easy to do everything from make a conference call, find a parking space or book a hotel room. The XE also functions as a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling multiple devices to connect to the internet – the vehicle antenna provides the best possible signal.

The sophistication of the infotainment system is matched by the array of advanced driver assistance systems available in the new XE: the laser head-up display (HUD) is an industry-first. Projecting sharp, high-contrast colour images onto the windscreen, the technology provides the driver with information such as speed and navigation instructions with maximum clarity and minimum distraction. As well as better image quality, the laser HUD is smaller and almost a third lighter than existing systems.

Designed and engineered in the UK, the aluminium-intensive XE will be the first Jaguar manufactured at a new purpose-built production facility at the company's Solihull plant in the West Midlands in the UK.

The world premiere of the new Jaguar XE will be held in London on September 8th.

Their internal doors sets are designed to fuse the convenience of a door set that is made to measure with stunning Italian design to create a true masterpiece.

The public at the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show were taken aback by the samples shown on the exhibition floor, which is testament to the quality of the products themselves.

Silvelox doors include a number of unique features including their exclusive 180 degree hinges, which not only allow for smooth operation but also give the added benefit of allowing the door to open a full 180 degrees. UK construction manager helps to create skills employers and industry needs today

Alison Lamplough, Head of Operational Training at the UK's largest privately owned construction firm joins the Board of NOCN, an organisation that has been helping to give people the skills to get a job or an apprenticeship for over 25 years.

In charge of training 4,500 people at Laing O'Rourke's European Hub, Alison brings a wealth of experience. She has responsibility for all site based training, including the development of new industry qualifications and is also chair of the Construction Trailblazers Apprenticeship Employer Group.

In her role to develop new vocational qualifications Alison works with sector skills councils, awarding bodies and other key stakeholders and has worked with NOCN for some time now on a new style employer-led apprenticeship undertaken in line with the Government's Richard Review principles.

On joining the NOCN Board Alison said: "Working with NOCN I was extremely impressed with their approach, in particular their role in supporting industry to create qualifications that employers need not what they as an awarding body think industry should have. This is clearly the way forward with the Richards review putting employers in the driving seat, but it was just the way things are done at NOCN which was like a breath of fresh air."

The charitable objectives of NOCN are at the heart of what drives the organisation and I'm excited to be part of the future of NOCN as it moves forward."

Following a successful funding bid to develop a new employer led Level 2 Apprenticeship for Steelfixing (an area identified nationally as one of the gaps in core skills); Laing O'Rourke selected a group of colleges including Bridgwater, Gateshead and the National Construction College to deliver the formal training component. And, after a full tendering process, they appointed NOCN to support the development of the qualification. The qualification has been designed to upskill existing workforces and introduces the use of new technology into site based work.

NOCN Managing Director, Graham Hasting Evans said:
"The construction industry is going through challenging times due to a skills shortage and an aging workforce but it's also experiencing an exciting period of change. Since working with Laing O'Rourke, and in particular Alison, we've been impressed with her extensive knowledge and experience. We're confident that having Alison on our board will help us to continue to create new and worthwhile qualifications to fit around what today's businesses need."

Siegenia Aluminium Series Now Available from Carl F Groupco

Latest hardware to be added to Carl F Groupco’s range is manufactured by Siegenia and designed specifically for aluminium windows. With features to ease fabrication and installation of tilt & turn windows, and advancements that simplify component selection, the ALU 4200 and ALU axxent product lines are designed to have strong appeal to the window industry.

Siegenia’s hardware advancement addresses the fact that traditional solutions for this market have often required a complicated buying and fitting process. Initiatives for the ALU series include non-handed and pre-assembled components to enhance installation and stock control.

Other key features include clampable hinge-side frame components. Vertical and horizontal locks are identical, which reduces stock holding as the components are interchangeable. Three pieced hinge ends are flush, and inline with the sash profile to enhance aesthetics. Using push rod technology designed for the profile, the system can be fitted to different size windows without increasing stock holding.

The product has a maximum weight of 130kg and is available with an extensive range of accessories. The ALU axxent is a concealed version of the hardware.

P C Henderson offers privacy and space for inter-generational homes

P C Henderson’s sliding and folding door hardware can offer vital added privacy and flexible layouts to improve inter-generational homes. With a record amount of grown-up children living at home and a rise in two or three family generations living under one roof, the National House Building Council (NHBC) predicts houses will be built and adapted to suit the surge of ‘co-homers’.

With expensive care for the elderly and children, and many struggling to get on the property ladder, families are pooling their funds to afford much larger homes and share the space. The Ideal Home Show census learnt that 4 per cent of the population, 728,000 people, now live in homes with two other generations – a higher rate than in the Victorian era.

Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at P C Henderson, comments on the growing trend:
“There are benefits to sharing homes with loved ones such as economical advantages and also convenient care for the elderly or children. However, living together permanently can have some disadvantages when it comes to privacy and respecting each other’s space. P C Henderson’s sliding and folding door hardware can help by providing privacy screens and versatile layouts. Optional closed areas can be created with a sliding or folding door system for relaxation, or the door can be folded back or concealed to create open plan areas for socialising.”

According to the Halifax monthly price index, house prices have risen up by £17,261 in the last year. In addition, a report from the Post Office shows the average house size has halved by 700 square feet in the last century, further showing the challenge to find affordable living space. By using sliding door gear systems floor space is created in a home in contrast to a swing door which impacts on the room once opened. In a house with ten 3ft internal doors, up to an additional 70sq ft of usable space can be released in the home by eliminating the room needed for it to swing and function.

Furthermore, the NHBC predicts that the familiar ‘granny annexe’ could evolve into co-homes with shared kitchens yet separate bathrooms and front doors. P C Henderson’s range of sliding and folding door gear hardware can provide space saving, versatile solutions for any layout and aesthetic.

Comprehensive doorset service plays key role in successful £430million hospital project

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw has supplied 5,131 doorsets and 7,330 doors to Bristol’s ground-breaking Southmead Hospital, which has the largest number of single en-suite rooms of any NHS hospital in the country.

By working closely with construction firm Carillion and architects BDP, Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw ensured it manufactured and installed products that meet the needs of patients and staff, while also contributing to the building’s design goals.
“We attended co-ordination meetings at BDP in Sheffield with the project architect and Carillion design team manager on a weekly basis for a year. At these meetings we checked that the details on each doorset were suitable for its intended use and that all the ironmongery we were supplying was also compatible,” said contract manager Alan Vanstone.

This included specifying its engineered performance core EnduraCor in areas of the hospital that are frequently used by heavy trolleys and beds, such as corridors and the single bedrooms that account for 75% of the hospital’s 800 beds. EnduraCor has fire retardant facings and flaxboard and its severe duty rating ensures it meets Health Technical Memorandum 69 guidance that states damage to a doorset must not impair its fire resistant qualities.

In theatre areas Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s Plasform doorset was specified. Plasform is particularly suited to healthcare situations because its rounded post-formed edges minimise the build up of airborne particles and can be easily wiped clean. Since all doorset veneers are treated with Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s anti-bacterial finish, Hygienilac, which kills 99.9% of bacteria, they provide vital protection against the spread of infections such as MRSA, C.diff, Salmonella and E.coli.

As well as providing state-of-the-art facilities the hospital was designed to create an uplifting sense of space and light – exemplified by the 300m, eight-storey, glass-roofed atrium that welcomes patients and visitors – while providing patients with valuable privacy.

This led to Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw manufacturing doorsets with a height of 2,600mm and specifying American White Oak frames and American White Oak veneers.
“These give the impression of a high class hotel rather than a healthcare institution,” added Vanstone. “We also developed a bespoke blind system that integrated blinds into bedroom doors and side screens, which enhanced patient privacy.”

The benefits of single-occupancy rooms are already being felt by patients, says chief executive of North Bristol NHS Trust Andrea Young: “The biggest response from patients has been the benefits of being able to close the door, to rest and sleep well in their single rooms.”

Testing of All-New Right-Hand-Drive Ford Mustang Begins

For the first time ever, a right-hand-drive Ford Mustang will roll off a Ford assembly line when global production begins. The addition of a right-hand-drive Mustang to Ford’s line-up of global vehicles will allow the iconic ‘pony car’ to be exported to more than 25 right-hand-drive markets around the world, including the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa.

Mustang engineers recently finished construction of the very first right-hand-drive sixth-generation Mustang. The prototype Mustang will be used to conduct various development tests in preparation for the car’s entry into the global market in the coming months.

While the United States is the largest market for Mustang with more than 9.2 million sales since the car’s debut in 1964, more than 161,000 Mustangs have been sold outside of North America in that time. In 2012 alone, more than 4,000 Mustangs were sold in 35 countries outside of North America, ranging from the United Arab Emirates to Chile to the Philippines.

While Mustang has more than 100 fan clubs around the globe, and was recently voted “Europe’s Most Wanted Classic Car” by AutoScout24, bringing a right-hand-drive Mustang to market will allow more enthusiasts to experience the car than ever before.

50 years of Mustang

Ford Mustang is the newest member of a very exclusive club – vehicles in continuous production for 50 years. The car has a worldwide base of fans, including more than 7.6 million on Facebook – the most of any vehicle nameplate. From the beginning, Mustang’s unique combination of style, performance and affordability established an entirely new class of sporty cars, and it has led the segment ever since.

The sixth-generation Mustang goes on sale in the United States this autumn and in the UK in 2015, and will eventually be available in more than 110 countries worldwide.

National Associations Sign Up To Arge EPDs

Following ARGE’s announcement to produce generic Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), ten national lock and hardware associations have now signed up to ARGE’s scheme – with more to follow.

The programme, which was agreed at the 2013 ARGE Conference as part of its sustainability roadmap, will see the delivery to ARGE members of generic, Pan-European EPDs for hardware products by summer 2015.

In addition to the UK’s Door and Hardware Federation, some of the key national associations in the lock and hardware industry have committed to the programme, including the Fachverband in Germany, UNIQ in France, as well as Spain’s AFACE, Austria’s FMMI and Netherland’s VHS. Italy is the latest nation that has committed to the EPDs, whilst Scandinavian associations are also represented by Finland’s Fin Committee and the SME in Sweden, with Switzerland’s VSSB making up the nine members signed up so far. Other national associations are also close to committing.

EPDs are designed to offer a coherent expression of data throughout the life cycle of a product. Developed to provide environmental data from LCA studies in a common format based on rules known as Product Category Rules.

Commenting on the importance of the EPD programme, Hans Weissenböck, ARGE Chairman, said:
“We are delighted that ten national associations, including some of the most influential in our industry, have recognised the importance of the sustainability agenda and the commercial benefits of generic EPDs.

“EPDs are the most effective way for communicating a product’s verifiable and accurate environmental information, which is becoming increasingly imperative in the construction market, which is why ARGE took the decision to create generic versions for our national members.

“The development of generic Pan-European EPDs from ARGE, which can be used across a range of applications, will be critical in enabling hardware manufacturers to access the construction market and remain competitive in a market increasingly subject to European and international standards.
“As we look forward toward this September’s conference, we hope that more national associations will recognise the commercial value of the programme and join us in Veneto to discuss the details and next stages for ARGE.”
After it has completed the data collection phase of the EPD creation process ARGE will begin to assess the possible programme holders for the next stage of the EPD delivery.

There is still time to register for this year’s conference in Veneto, Italy, where the delivery of EPDs will take centre stage. Registration forms and more information can be found on the ARGE website http://arge.org/events/2014-veneto/invitation.htm

To find out more about ARGE and its sustainability agenda, please visit www.arge.org or follow us on Linked In http://www.linkedin.com/company/arge

Further BRE DHF fire door training courses announced

The next Fire Door Education Programme training courses for professionals involved in the inspection, installation and repair of fire doors have been announced.

They are being run by BRE, which provides expertise on every aspect of the built environment and the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), which represents the leading manufacturers and installers of industrial and commercial doors, shutters and building hardware.

The programme comprises four training modules: fire door inspection, the installation and maintenance of timber fire doors, steel hinged fire doors, and fire shutters. The one day courses are taking place in October and November at BRE Watford and BRE Scotland (East Kilbride).

Those attending the Fire Door Education Programme courses will include building control officers, facilities managers, safety inspectors, insurers, fire risk assessors and other fire professionals involved in the installation, inspection and repair of fire doors. It is designed to build delegates’ knowledge of the different types of fire doors, will cover the importance of critical components such as door closers, and develop delegates’ understanding of the inspection procedure and pass/fail criteria.

The training programme was originally developed following widespread publicity and concerns that the integrity of fire doors is being compromised in residential apartment blocks and public buildings.

Michael Skelding, DHF general manager and secretary said:
“Worries about the integrity of fire doors in buildings led BRE, in partnership with ourselves, to develop the programme specifically for those already actively involved in the inspection, installation and repair of fire doors.

“The correct specification and installation of passive fire protection is critical to the safety of building occupants. Inspection professionals must ensure that appropriate products are installed to the proper standard. This training scheme significantly adds to their knowledge of fire doors.”

The next fire door inspection courses are taking place on October 2nd at BRE Watford and November 18th at BRE Scotland. Providing the commercial sector with guaranteed performance

A wealth of technical expertise and years of experience working with the commercial sector ensure Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw delivers solutions and products that meet its clients’ specific needs.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s Designer Range of performance flush doorsets has been developed to offer a level of design flexibility and quality that ensures it is able to provide an effective solution in a variety of commercial settings.

The core doorset is available with numerous wood veneers, PVC, paint and metal finishes and comes with four frame options – Mono, Cubith, Barum and Solo – as well as 11 vision panel designs. Alongside the ability to accommodate variations in size this gives specifiers scope to design a solution that fits the aesthetic and performance requirements of their project.

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s skilled staff work closely with architects and contractors throughout a project, sharing their knowledge of the commercial sector and relevant Building Regulations to ensure the right products are specified for each application. Solutions are then manufactured in a quality-controlled factory environment and can be fitted by an approved installer to ensure a fully certified fit-for-purpose system is delivered.

Shafiq Sharif, Group Marketing Manager said:
“We understand that clients’ needs can vary greatly in the commercial sector which is why we’ve developed our Designer Range to offer such flexibility. Its wide selection of facings, finishes and vision panels, and the collaborative approach of our technical experts, enables architects and contractors to specify solutions that offer guaranteed performance in specific commercial settings.”

Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s expertise has seen them contribute successfully to a number of high profile developments. The company recently supplied 328 performance doorsets from its Designer Range and Extended Performance Range to the new Microsoft Research building in Cambridge.

In order to provide a solution that addressed the development’s needs each doorset was manufactured using Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s engineered performance core EnduraCor which provides increased durability and stability in busy environments. In addition they were finished with anti-bacterial additive Hygienilac which kills 99.9% of bacteria including MRSA, Listeria, Clostridium Difficile and Salmonella. Hygienilac has passed BS 6250 tests for severe usage and its active ingredient has approvals from the Food and Drug Administration, Health & Safety Executive and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Any entrance, every need - the ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems pledge

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) member ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is now acknowledged as the UK’s leading industrial and commercial entrance solutions provider.

This follows ASSA ABLOY’s acquisition of Crawford Industrial Doors and the subsequent development of a comprehensive portfolio including pedestrian, industrial, high performance and made-to-order doors.

Its three specialist business areas - pedestrian doors, industrial doors & docking solutions and high performance doors - allow ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems to make a unique pledge:

“We provide the total package required to enable the most efficient flow of people, goods and services in any commercial building, around the clock,” says Neil Davis, who is vice president of ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems – Western Europe.

“We bring together world-leading products, maintenance programmes and modernisation services in order to provide comprehensive entrance solutions for the front, back and interior of the building.

“ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is the first company to wholly own brands across all the major door disciplines, so our customers deal with one provider with a single point of contact to meet their every entrance need.”

He pointed out that this “one stop shop” approach works well for all client sectors including architects requiring specific aesthetics, businesses looking for particular performance, and building contractors needing to make work simple and seamless on site.

“We bring in-house experts and brands like Crawford, Besam and Albany together so we cover every client need.”

With a UK annual turnover of £45 million, and a workforce numbering 220, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is currently on a roll. Recent prestige projects include a £1.5 million contract to provide dock levellers, doors and loading equipment for a new build development by parcel carriers DPD (UK) at Hinckley; supplying three 30 m2 doors worth £1.1 million for a dry dock at Devonport Docks; and a contract with Sainsbury’s to maintain entrance doors at all their 1,000 plus stores.

It has been announced that ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is to be the Diamond Sponsor of the DHF Gala Dinner Dance being held in October at the Carden Park Hotel in Cheshire.

Said Neil: “The association between ASSA ABLOY and the DHF goes back many years. Both ASSA ABLOY with their iconic lock brands and Crawford Doors were active in the DHF’s predecessor organisations and we continue to pay a leading role, to our mutual benefit. For that reason we are delighted to take the opportunity of being the Diamond sponsor of this prestigious event.”

Ferrari 250 GTO achieves $38,115,000 (£22,843,633) – A new world auction record at Bonhams sale

Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta - (copyright Bonhams)

The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta has become the most valuable car in history to be sold at auction when it realized $38,115,000 (£22,843,633 or €28,528,626) on Thursday, 14 August 2014 at Bonhams’ Quail Lodge Auction in Carmel, California.

Surpassing the current record of the most valuable car sold at auction, which was also set by Bonhams with the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 R F1 Racer that sold for $30-million at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed Auction last year, the Ferrari GTO had been the subject of intense international interest.

Bidders from around the world were in attendance in the audience and on the telephones. The auction pavilion was filled to total capacity with overflow on the lawns watching the happenings live on the numerous television screens. After the start of a passionate bidding war that at times resembled a tennis match, complete with moments of silence interrupted by cheers, the audience erupted in applause when the fall of the gavel confirmed the final price.

Says Robert Brooks, Chairman of Bonhams:
“It’s been a genuine privilege to represent this outstanding car and we are absolutely delighted with today’s results. We’ve always maintained that we would exceed the current world record and that the car would bring between $30-$40-million and today the GTO did just that.”

Demonstrating the confidence in the collector car market and the strength of the Ferrari brand, today’s new world record also reaffirms Bonhams’ position as one of the world’s leading auctioneers of rare and important motorcars.

Other cars from the very special Maranello Rosso Collection of ten important Ferraris also sold extremely well for a combined total $65,945,000 (£39,522,440 or €49,359,559).
