Abloy UK hosts Access Control Seminar at ISEC 2017

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK

Security expert Abloy UK is calling for visitors to ISEC 2017 to attend its seminar, which explains important changes to access control locking applications on fire and escape doors.

Taking place on the 26th & 27th of April 2017 in the Conference Centre, Citywest, Dublin, ISEC is Ireland's long established event for the Irish Security and Fire Industry.

The seminar will help delegates understand the minimum legal performance criteria for access control locking applications for fire and escape doors.

This includes EN179 and EN1125, reinforced with new licencing requirements for locksmiths and installers in the Republic of Ireland, through the Private Security Authority (PSA) and impending changes in local Building Regulations.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, is presenting the seminar, and is retained by BSI and CEN as the UK’s Electric Locking Technical Expert. He will also cover implementing the requirements of the ‘Construction Products Directive’ applicable throughout Europe within the seminar.
Pat commented: “If you or your business supply, specify, or install access control locking or blocking as part of a security system, you cannot afford to miss this seminar. I’ll be explaining the minimum performance criteria, and the implications of getting the specification wrong.”
ISEC 2017 is a free event - for more information or to register to attend go to www.isec.ie.

For further information on any of the products and services available from Abloy UK, please call 01902 364 500 or email marketing@abloy.co.uk

TEAM BMW heralds a new era for BMW UK in the 2017 British Touring Car Championship

A further chapter in BMW’s illustrious history in touring car racing unfolded today as BMW UK, in partnership with West Surrey Racing (WSR), announced a three- car team that will again bid for victory of the 2017 British Touring Car Championship.

The announcement of TEAM BMW is a landmark occasion, marking BMW’s return to the country’s best-watched motor race series as a manufacturer team. It has been 21 years since the marque last contested the series in this manner, when BMW Team Schnitzer fielded a BMW 320i line-up.

Graeme Grieve, CEO of BMW Group UK, commented:
“The BTCC is one of the most significant race series in the UK and has a huge and enthusiastic following. With a history of success and the continuous support of WSR for the past decade, we are delighted to step up as a Manufacturer Team again after 21 years.”
BMW UK’s significant financial investment in the BTCC team includes the funding of technical developments on all fronts, focused on the very latest BMW engine derivative.

At the launch at BMW Park Lane, London, Graeme Grieve joined WSR Team Principal, Dick Bennetts, to remove the wraps from one of the three BMW 125i M Sport team cars that will contest the 2017 BTCC. With the cars freshly- developed, prepared and run again by WSR, BMW’s return to the Series as a Manufacturer coincides with a further landmark, marking a decade since WSR first contested the BTCC with BMW, which has endured to this day.

The BMW relationship with Dick Bennetts’ Sunbury-based operation in the BTCC was established in 2007, where they claimed both the Independent Drivers and Teams Championships. They repeated the feat in 2008 and went on to take the overall BTCC Drivers’ title in 2009, and added a driver and team double crown in 2014.

Dick Bennetts remarked:
“I reckon that working together successfully as motorsport partners for ten years is the equivalent of a lifelong marriage. It is a tribute to BMW’s product and commitment, and we are delighted to once again represent the marque as they return with increased commitment as a Manufacturer in the BTCC.”
Significantly, the driver roll of honour for each of the three BTCC Independent, Overall and Teams Championship victories fell to Northern Ireland’s Colin Turkington.

Turkington has spent nine of his 12 BTCC seasons with the WSR-BMW team, during which he scored 26 wins over five seasons. Now, two years after claiming the outright Drivers Championship at the wheel of a previous-generation BMW 125i M Sport, he returns to the rear-wheel drive TEAM BMW with renewed vigour.

Driver talent runs deep in BMW’s 2017 BTCC campaign.  Joining Turkington is Andrew Jordan, 2013 BTCC Overall Drivers Champion and three-time Independent Drivers Champion - who brings with him long-term personal sponsor, Pirtek. Completing the trio is Rob Collard, a BTCC followers’ favourite and the Series’ legendary overtaker who, after his most competitive season to date in 2016, marks the tenth consecutive year he has driven a BMW in the BTCC, the last seven with WSR.

Last year, the trio of WSR-prepared BMW 125i M Sport cars contributed to a nail-biting finale that went down to the wire at the final round. Team driver Sam Tordoff was pipped at the post for the overall driver’s title, just two points shy of victory. Nevertheless, the WSR BMW team claimed a double title success at the conclusion of the series, taking the BTCC Constructors crown and the Teams’ Championship once again.

Entering the 2017 season of the super-competitive BTCC, TEAM BMW has heavyweight success behind it, increased financial and technical investment from BMW UK, the skills, consistency and superb track record of West Surrey Racing, and a driver trio that collectively represents the most powerful line-up in this year’s BTCC series.

The history behind the success: WSR and BMW

A switch to BMW machinery in 2007 marked the start of the most successful chapter in WSR’s touring car history. Colin Turkington became independents’ champion in his first season with the BMW 320si and added an overall title in ’09 and a race win in the FIA World Touring Car Championship for WSR the following year.

Replacing the 320si model with the new BMW 1 Series for 2013 paved the way for another overall title for Turkington in 2014. He also won the independents’ title – the fifth for a WSR driver in 11 seasons – and helped the team add a fourth independent teams’ crown in the same year.

The 2015 season brought race victories for WSR’s three drivers; Rob Collard, Sam Tordoff and Andy Priaulx while Collard, Tordoff and Jack Goff combined to win the constructors’ and teams’ championships in 2016; the latter under the Team JCT600 with GardX banner.

Gilgen first to reach EU standard for security shutters

Gilgen Door Systems has helped raise physical security standards again by becoming the first UK manufacturer to launch a range of security roller shutters tested and approved to the European standard BS EN1627:2011.

Following a stringent test programme designed to assess resistance to a wide range of professional attack methods, three models in the Rolegard™ security range were tested and certified by the LPCB* (Loss Prevention Certification Board) to RC3 and RC4 standards.

RC3-4 security shutters are designed to provide high levels of hardened physical security for applications most at risk of criminal break-in or terrorist attack. Suitable applications include critical national infrastructure, financial centres, museums, communications, data and media centres, government buildings and high value commercial premises.

Alongside the new models Gilgen will continue to provide a comprehensive range of high security shutters that meet UK Loss Prevention and ‘Secured by Design’ standards with models tested to LPS1175, issue 7, level 2 to level 5. The company’s investment in these new RC3-4 models means it can provide a solution for building projects where the European standard has been specified, giving customers’ across the globe the reassurance that their entrances are protected to the required standard.

European standards have stringent requirements which differ in many ways to British standards, for example, an additional provision for static and dynamic load protection up to 10kn of pressure. To achieve the required standard the shutters were specifically designed around the demands of EN1627 and through the test programme had to withstand a simulated professional attempt to gain entry using a range of powerful tools including cordless power tools such as grinders, drills and saws over an extended attack time.

Rolegard RC3-INS-HD and RC4-INS-HD provide RC3 and RC4 level security along with energy-saving properties through an integral core. These models are available with direct drive or heavy duty chain drive motors and certified for structural openings up to 6metres wide by 8metres high. Completing the line up the RC4-DS-HD, is certified to RC4 standard and comes with reinforced double skin lath, providing an option for additional blast performance.

Each model is available with a choice of manual dead locks or a 24v electric solenoid locking system. These lock the bottom edge of the curtain assembly tightly against the floor to resist the exceptionally high static loads which are used to lift and push the curtain during the forced entry test program. A range of activation controls is available including push button, sensor, key switch and remote control, in addition the shutters can be integrated into the building management and alarm system.

Commenting on the launch, Managing Director, David Cerquella said:
“We are delighted to launch these new models which are a result of our continuous programme of product development and testing. We have listened to customers at home and overseas markets and will continue to develop solutions that enable them to mitigate developing risks”.
Gilgen Door Systems now offers the widest range of security tested shutters on the market and is committed to further development around customer needs.

Intratone technology continues to manage access to Elton Close

Sophisticated, reliable and easy to use access control technology from Intratone is at the heart of a security solution implemented by Added Security Technology (AST) London to protect residents and visitors to the premises in Elton Close, Teddington.

Elton Close is a five-block development, with a total of 68 flats, car access, parking and garages. AST was recommended to the management who required a complete solution that would encompass controlling the access of people to the residential buildings and preventing vehicles from parking illegally in the Close.

People are managed through the use of a fob-based, GSM Intercom door entry system from Intratone installed alongside five new and secure aluminium doors – also specified by AST to ensure the highest levels of security. Residents are issued with the fobs that are presented to a proximity reader to grant access, with data from the fob being recognised (and recorded) by a central management system.

Visitors can enter a flat number into the keypad on the doors entry system at the main entrance door that automatically dials the appropriate resident’s landline telephone. Should there be no answer, the system will revert to dialling a mobile phone, or other designated number, where residents can remotely grant or deny access. Using Intratone’s management system, the fobs can be easily monitored and cancelled/re-assigned online if a resident moves on. This solution is administered, for Elton Close, by AST.

To prevent the unauthorised parking of vehicles within the Close, AST also specified a new barrier system using Intratone’s Intrabox RF Receiver.

Residents are issued with transmitters whose RF signals are received by the management system to open the barrier. Every time the barrier is raised, the information is reported to operators to record an overview of the barrier’s activity. The technology is again remotely programmable through Intratone’s management system to accommodate changes in vehicles or residents.

Philip Hornsby, Managing Director of AST London says that he has been working with Intratone technology for the last ten years:
“The technology is proven and highly reliable,” he explains, “and well received by residents and management alike. Residents feel safer, and we have all-but eradicated the issue of problem parking.”
Sylvia Junge from the Elton Close Residents Association, says that the installation of security equipment and the barrier were delivered as promised and with exceptional levels of personal service by AST:
“We need regular changes for new residents, fobs to be programmed and telephone numbers to be inputted,” she adds. “This is always dealt with speedily and efficiently.
“All our regular maintenance is carried out with the minimum of fuss, and the few occasions that we have had a problem, AST has dealt with any issue promptly and to a high standard.”

Pickersgill-Kaye on Track to Become a Centre of Excellence for Rail Sector

Lock maker Pickersgill-Kaye, which became a trading division of ASSA ABLOY Limited from February 1 2017, is set to become a specialist production base for the rail industry following the announcement of significant new investment in the Yorkshire business by the owner and global leader in door opening solutions.

A dedicated R&D facility and rail centre of excellence will be created as part of an overhaul of Pickersgill-Kaye’s Leeds plant to help drive opportunities for the company in the rail sector through innovation and improved service levels for its emergency override mechanisms, safety critical solutions and locking equipment.

ASSA ABLOY says the level of investment, which includes attracting and recruiting more designers at Pickersgill-Kaye, is a demonstration of its commitment to the business by creating the right environment to develop the next generation of specialist products for the rail industry both at home and overseas.

Managing Director, Simon Teagle, said:
“Pickersgill-Kaye has been heavily allied to the rail industry for over 150 years and it is this expertise and knowledge that was one of the rationales for acquiring the company. Investing in design technology and designers will not only enable us to continue to support the rail sector in the UK, but also drive sales in export markets too.”
In addition to further developing Pickersgill-Kaye’s core offering for train companies such as LED train door status indicators, cab door locks and passenger emergency units, the Leeds facility will also become a design hub for creating future locking solutions tailored to meet customers’ specific requirements.

Pickersgill-Kaye’s resilience has laid the groundwork over the years in a very specific environment which has won significant orders for its products from high-profile rail projects and Its customer base includes Hitachi, Siemens, Bombardier, Alstom, Irish Rail, CAF, Hyundai-Rotem, Ocean Eagle and DB Cargo UK to name but a few.

It is this long-term penetration of the rail market which has enabled Pickersgill-Kaye not only to manufacture locking systems fit for 21st Century trains but also the capability and equipment to support legacy rolling stock on the UK’s rail network – often retro-fitting problematic locks originally supplied by competitors.

However, there is a move towards higher quality, more robust products and some operators are recommending Pickersgill-Kaye’s locks to the train manufacturers in order to achieve the standards they need.

Train companies cannot afford to have a vehicle taken out of operation because one lock is not working, whether it’s on a toilet or a locomotive cab door, which is where Pickersgill-Kaye comes in by producing safety critical equipment that is built to last.

With over 150 years’ experience supplying the rail industry with door locks, Pickersgill-Kaye’s manufacturing flexibility and commitment, now with the considerable support of ASSA ABLOY, will help the company to compete and win further orders for high profile projects against often tough overseas competition.

First Kitemark scheme for Balustrades helps to raise the safety standard

Phoenix Balustrading

BSI, the business standards company has launched a new Kitemark for Balustrades. The first organizations to achieve the BSI Kitemark™ for Protective Barrier Systems (Balustrades) are Delta Balustrades, Phoenix Balustrading Ltd part of Cooke Brothers and Q-Railing.

Launched in December 2016, the scheme has been developed for manufacturers and importers of temporary and permanent balustrades to demonstrate that their products meet the appropriate British, European or international standard for quality, safety, performance and trust. This is the first scheme in the UK dedicated to ensuring balustrades are manufactured to the highest possible standard.

Protective barrier systems, widely referred to as balustrades, are increasingly being used in and around modern buildings. Whilst they can have a huge visual impact, any new balustrade system must be designed to ensure that it is safe for use and that any potential installation errors are minimised. An unsafe balustrade system can be costly to organizations and potentially life threatening to the public.

The BSI Kitemark for Balustrades provides reassurance that products have been manufactured to a consistently high standard. It also provides an incentive for installers of barriers to purchase complete systems from Kitemark suppliers, rather than a ‘mix and match’ assembly of unproven components.

Andy Butterfield, Product Certification Director of Built Environment at BSI said:
“With the increasing use of balustrades in the market place, it’s vital that these products are tested to ensure compliance and provide assurance to manufacturers, architects, and specifiers of new builds and refurbishments that products are manufactured to a high standard.
“We’re really delighted to have been able to present Delta Balustrades, Phoenix Balustrading and Q-Railing with the first Kitemarks. This will help them to differentiate themselves from other organizations with non-assured products. The BSI Kitemark is recognised as a symbol of trust and we have a strong track record in promoting excellence when it comes to the safety and performance of products.”
In order to achieve certification, organizations are required to be independently assessed whereby they will have to demonstrate that they adhere to the requirements of BS 6180:2011 Barriers in and about buildings Code of practice. Products also have to be manufactured within a ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management Systems controlled factory environment.

BSI has engaged the services of Lucideon, an international provider of testing to the construction industry to complete part of the international product assessment. The collaboration will enable both parties to share their extensive expertise in assurance and testing respectively and is part of a broader partnership which will see both parties develop Product Testing and Certification solutions for the construction industry.

Steve Newman, Product Manager, Lucideon, said:

Pothole Warning Beams to Your Dash Could Save You Cash

Costly car repairs could be prevented with the help of an ingenious, crowd sourced virtual pothole map, which Ford is researching, with testing due to start later this year. The map would show drivers, in real-time, on in-car displays, where potholes are, how bad they are, and suggest alternative routes.

This winter is expected to set records as the worst ever in some parts of Europe, with freezing temperatures, ice and snow likely lead to more cracked and potholed roads. Bad road surfaces contribute to more than a third of all accidents every year.

In the UK alone, a pothole damage claim is received by local authorities every 17 minutes – with claims averaging £432. In 2011, 20 million potholes were reported in Europe but only half were filled – at an estimated cost of more than €1.2 billion.
“A virtual pothole map could highlight a new pothole the minute it appears and almost immediately warn other drivers that there is a hazard ahead,” said Uwe Hoffmann, research engineer, Advanced Chassis Control Technologies, Ford of Europe. “Our cars already feature sensors that detect potholes and now we are looking at taking this to the next level.”
Cold, ice and snow all cause roads to freeze, thaw and ultimately break apart, a situation compounded by heavy spring rain that fills the holes – spelling trouble for the 16 million motorists who hit the road for the Easter break.

Ford models including Galaxy, Mondeo and S-MAX already use on-board sensors for Continuously Controlled Damping with Pothole Mitigation, which detects potholes using sensors and adjusts the suspension to help reduce any potential damage.

Engineers are now researching the use of cameras and embedded modems, at the Ford Research and Innovation Centre, in Aachen, Germany. Together, these technologies would gather detailed information on the potholes and beam it to the cloud – where it can be made available to other drivers – in real time.

Further research is also exploring the use of an active suspension system designed to massively reduce the severity of bumps and rough road surfaces.

Ford already tests new cars on a nightmare 1.2 mile road at Lommel Proving Ground, in Belgium, using replicas of some of the world’s worst potholes.

Assa’s Cliq® Remote Wins Most Innovative New Product at Housing Innovation Awards

CLIQ® Remote from ASSA, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, has won the title of ‘Most Innovative New Product’ at the 2017 Housing Innovation Awards.

Held at The Grand Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden, London, the award was presented to ASSA in recognition of how it is helping transform access control and effective key management in the social housing sector.

John O’Brien, Director of Innovation at BRE (Building Research Establishment) Innovation Park, one of six esteemed housing professionals judging the awards, said:
“We found ASSA’s innovation gave housing associations more control over their void properties, reduced costs in repeated visits and allows them to control the whole process. Another area that the judges were particularly excited about is extending the product to provide access for care workers and addressing health issues such as dementia.”
The technology allows housing organisations to give key holders – regardless of location – remote access to a property. Each key can be programmed and updated individually, which means key holders have access only to the areas relevant to them and during their allocated time or dates.

ASSA CLIQ® Remote is also reducing the time empty properties stand vacant between tenancies. By eliminating the need for physical key handovers, the technology removes workflow delays, ensuring maintenance staff or contractors are able to access void properties as and when needed.

The judges highlighted the impact the technology has already had on organisations such as Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC). Since being implemented 12 months, ASSA CLIQ® Remote is saving staff approximately 40 hours of time every week due to improved operational efficiencies, while delivering an additional £60,000 a year to RMBC in rent and council tax from properties that would have otherwise remained empty for longer.

Simon Wilson, National Sales Manager for ASSA CLIQ® Remote, said:
“We are absolutely delighted that ASSA CLIQ® Remote has collected the prize for most innovative product at the 2017 Housing Innovation Awards. In addition to solving key management issues, ASSA CLIQ® Remote also helps manage health and safety, and offer audit traces of visitors to the properties. Hidden costs, which can impact greatly on council’s budgets, can be controlled and reduced by implementing this very simple-to-install solution.
“We are proud of how CLIQ® Remote is helping revolutionise access control for the social housing market, and this award is recognition of that. We look forward to sharing the opportunities it can deliver with other social housing organisations across the UK in the future.”

Securefast Digital locks, just what the doctor ordered for new Super Surgery

The latest Securefast SBL365.SL/91 Mechanical Digital Lock with Sash Lock has been specified throughout the new £7.5 million super-surgery occupying 2,200 square metres over three storeys on the old hospital site in Barton Road Tewkesbury.

The new centre will be called The Devereux Centre after the late Tewkesbury doctor Dr William Charles Devereux and will cater for up to 30,000 patients which are 5,000 more than the current two practices together.

The new site provides twice the space of the previous buildings in order to house meeting rooms, a staff room, medical records, additional parking facilities and engineering plant, creating a one-stop primary care facility for the people of Tewksbury and the surrounding area, with sufficient space for a minor operation suite and pharmacy.

Selected for its performance and reliability, the SBL365.SL/91 Mechanical Digital Lock with Sash Lock was chosen throughout the building, so that rooms can be entered with a code without having to carry fobs, cards or keys, with the facility that a key holder could lock the door by key if they wish to close off that particular room.

The Securefast Mechanical Digital Lock has been tested to 200,000 cycles and fire rated making the product ideal for a cost effective access control system without the heavy investment in wiring and electronics.

Black Millwork Breathes New Life into Richmond Hill

Black Millwork has supplied a range of its windows and external doors to a beautiful and extensive refurbishment project in Foxton Mews, Richmond Hill, which has brought a dilapidated building back to life.

Beginning in February 2016 and being completed earlier this year, the project consists of two houses and four offices. The 6,000 square foot building, located at the heart of Richmond Hill had started to show its age and was in disrepair.

The task of restoring the property to its former glory was handed to Harepath LLP, who subsequently installed a host of Black Millwork products including Double Hung Flash Windows, Casement Windows and some bespoke designed doors.

Chris Ackley, Member at Harepath LLP commented:
“This renovation project represented a significant challenge to all involved. The buildings featured several unusual window and door units, which although unique, provided inadequate protection against the elements. Therefore, the challenge for us was to boost performance standards whilst retaining the property’s distinctive character.”
Harepath LLP is a niche property developer operating in South West London. With a combined business experience of over 30 years, the company understands how to guarantee flair, innovation and top quality design and finish to every project.

The combination of Black Millwork’s extensive portfolio of windows and its ability to create bespoke doors made it the obvious choice when the were sourcing units. What’s more, the company’s extensive experience in refurbishing a broad spectrum of dwellings would prove crucial when problems arose.

One of the standout features of the property was the large stable door at the front of the homes. To maintain the original feel of the unit the developers and Black Millwork worked hard to create a similarly distinct design.

The stable door was replaced with a mix of the company’s doors and windows to create an entirely new but complementary look for the property’s exterior. Additionally, the door’s functionality was unique: by using a set of combination door units, it featured a stable door opening inwards and an outward opener at the other end with a fixed panel in the middle.

Speaking on the project, Gary Hutton, General Manager at Black Millwork commented:
“This project was an exciting endeavor but certain aspects of it posed an interesting challenge to ourselves and the developers. For example, the large stable door at the property needed renovation but we needed to find a suitably interesting feature to replace it with. What the developers have created with our products is very unique and visually striking.”
Throughout the property the developers also used a range of Black Millwork’s Engineered Timber Flush Casement Windows. Manufactured from quality knot free laminated engineered Baltic pine, the units come double-glazed as standard, giving an impressive U-Value of 1.4 w/m²K.

Alongside these units a number of the company’s sliding sash windows were also installed. Both of these window types are pressure impregnated with a preservative to protect against insect and fungal attack reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Speaking on the development, Chris Ackley added:
“Working on this project in Richmond Hill has been a great experience. We’ve been able to create some exciting designs by appropriating existing features and using a selection of Black Millwork’s product range. We found Black Millwork to be a very communicative company, which helped us resolve challenges we’ve encountered along the way. It was our first time working with the company and it’s highly likely we’ll use them again in the future!”
