Cotswold Café extended using W20 Steel Screens and Doors

Longborough in Gloucestershire is located in one of the UK's most beautiful landscapes, with a unique architectural style that uses mellow limestone walls containing metal framed windows.

This heritage continues with a member of the Steel Window Association having recently been called upon to supply W20 screens and doors for the extension of a popular café and food store.

Cotswold Casements is based five miles away in Moreton-in-Marsh and has developed a good working relationship with local builder, Nathan Clarke: carrying out the design, manufacture and installation of three screens at the Cotswold Food Store in Longborough, the largest measuring just over three metres wide by 2.2 metres high.

With the central screen including a double door and each side screen having top opening casements to allow ventilation into the café, this contract demonstrates the full potential of W20 profiles. The slim section size offers optimum glass area to maximise light entering any building; while offering a distinctive appearance. Then, employing ‘parliament hinges' enables the doors to fold fully back when the weather allows. Satin chrome Frank Allart door handles and SWF satin chrome window furniture further enhance the performance and appearance of the installation.

The builder, Nathan Clarke, who commissioned the SWA member to supply and install the fenestration, commented:
"There was a planning requirement to keep the windows in a similar style, and with the building being over a hundred years old, I feel the W20 frames really fitted with the architecture. Overall, Cotswold Casements did an amazing job and I have worked with the company on a number of jobs elsewhere across the area."
The screens, doors and windows are glazed with 4-8-4 sealed units featuring low-E, low iron glass containing Krypton gas in the cavity to offer an overall U value of 1.8 W/m2 K.

In addition to renovation and replica refurbishment projects where architectural heritage often influences the choice of fenestration, Steel Window Association members are also involved in a lot of new build work.

Both the W20 and W40 steel sections provide the high security and durability regularly required for school and hospital buildings as well as commercial developments, with the use of high performance IG units enabling the different options to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations.

The Cotswold Food Store & Café has been run by husband and wife, Bernard and Joanne Williams since 2014, championing local produce and top quality, friendly service. Cotswold Casements completed its work at the Café around the turn of the year.
