BSI launches verification scheme for Approved Document Q

BSI, the business improvement company has today launched a new verification scheme to help non-manufacturer installers of windows and doors demonstrate compliance with Approved Document Q.

This new scheme provides installers with independent verification that they fulfil this aspect of The Building Regulations by assessing their organization’s capability to supply and install products that meet PAS 24: Enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK. This is one of the routes to compliance referenced within Approved Document Q for England and Wales covering security in dwellings.

Installers of easily accessible windows and doors are required to provide evidence of compliance of Approved Document Q by installing products that have been manufactured to a design shown by test, to meet the security requirements of PAS 24.  This is applicable to new dwellings, and existing buildings which have had a ‘material change of use’ and become dwellings were they were previously not.

This must be demonstrated via certification or test reports to those who require it, such as Local Authority Building Control, Contractors, Developers and NHBC. These reports are often owned by a third party and as a result, are not in the installer’s company name which can create delays in installation.

By assessing an organisation’s capability to provide compliant products instead, this verification scheme enables the installer to achieve a certificate in their company name, verified by BSI that can be handed to those that require compliance evidence.

Andy Butterfield, Product Certification Director of Built Environment at BSI said:
“The fenestration market has changed significantly in recent years – the installation market in particular has seen rapid growth. It’s vital that installers can prove that the windows and doorsets they are fitting, where required, meet the requirements of Approved Document Q to help ensure the security of homes.

“It can be hugely challenging for installers to demonstrate compliance using test and certification data sourced from their supply chain, if they haven’t manufactured the product. We’ve developed this scheme with those installers in mind.”

In order to achieve to achieve the verification certification for Doors & Windows (ADQ-VC), organisations are required to be independently assessed at BSI’s Centre of Excellence in Hemel Hempstead against PAS 24: Enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK. Doorsets and windows intended to offer a level of security suitable for dwellings and other buildings exposed to comparable risk.

Bring Steel Doors and Windows into the Bathroom

Steel in the home continues to dominate in the home fashion stakes; internal partitions and large steel windows replace solid doors and walls in contemporary homes. And, with advice from the Steel Window Association, homeowners can enjoy plenty of options if they want the look!

The most common use of steel windows in bathrooms is to create shower screens; not only are they are an excellent replacement for shower curtains, the stylish design also allows plenty of light to enter the shower space. Homeowners can choose to have just one screen outlining the shower tray on one side with an open front, or opt for two screens to create a closed in cubicle.

Another great way to bring steel into the bathroom is to use them as an internal partition between bedrooms and ensuites. They offer a stunning yet simple way to establish a seamless transition between the bedroom and bathroom, which lets plenty of light between the two rooms and can open up the bedroom to give the appearance of more space.

Alternatively, if no changes are needed to an existing bathroom scheme, bathroom windows can be replaced with frosted steel ones. The high energy performing W30 or W40 profiles are ideal for exterior windows as they trap heat in the building, and the frosted panel means privacy is maintained.

Members of the Steel Window Association offer a UK wide service for the repair and replacement of various types of old metal windows, doors and screens, as well as being able to manufacture new fenestration which fully meets the building regulations.

For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk or call 020 8543 2841.

New Brio Weatherfold 5c – Folding door hardware system that carries panels up to 80kg.

Allegion’s Brio brand once again shows why it is a global leader in folding & sliding door hardware with its new Weatherfold 5c: An exterior bottom-rolling system that easily handles panels up to 80Kg weight in any commercial or residential site.

The Brio Weatherfold series has long been recognised as the architectural standard in exterior folding door hardware. It’s tried and tested, having been manufactured and installed at thousands of sites around the world.

With its superior design and high-quality manufacture, Brio Weatherfold 5c eliminates the need for a reinforced structural beam above the opening, as the weight of the door is carried by the bottom rollers. The rollers are large in diameter, horizontal and come standard with stainless steel precision bearings. This is a major feature on installation, and it is expected that it will be readily favoured by architects, contractors and joinery specialists as it gives more options on creativity and design on any site.

The Brio Weatherfold 5c is also designed to handle this increased weight in either timber or aluminum door panels with precision and ease of use by its gentle, steady moving action.

Another major feature is that this is a fully self-cleaning system. A major problem with bottom rolling systems can be contamination of dirt, grit or other matter, which effects the rolling efficiency of the system.
“Quite simply, the design of the Brio Weatherfold 5c system eradicates this problem,” says Dave Newton, Brio UK general manager.
As the Weatherfold 5c’s puck rollers are significantly larger than the wheels usually used in most bottom rolling systems, it means it rotates less over the same distance. This, combined with its full stainless-steel construction and precision bearings, makes Brio Weatherfold 5c bottom-rolling hardware extremely durable.

The innovative yet simple system can also create openings up to 3m high and 16m wide with its unique design and operation – another huge advantage for interior designers and architects.

Design excellence is also evident in the detail – for example, the reduced height of the sill. This lower threshold now only benefits the end user as there is less of a step over, but also the joinery manufacturer as a smaller bottom frame is needed..

Brio Weatherfold 5c has completed extensive corrosion resistance tests conducted in an industry standard salt spray chamber. It uses the highest quality corrosion resistant materials. All components are constructed using 300 series stainless steel, with the cast items in 316 grade.

To further safeguard against corrosion, all visual stainless-steel surfaces undergo a passivation process and all cast stainless components are electro-polished. These processes greatly reduce and eliminate surface discolouration often referred to as ‘tea-staining’.

The Weatherfold 5c premium finish of Satin Stainless provides another level of protection from the elements and further enhances the system’s durability.

The Brio Weatherfold 5c also incorporates the 286-locking system as standard for added security.

Added to the design and manufacturing excellence is rigorous product testing and quality assurance – plus a full 10-year warranty as standard on all Weatherfold 5c hardware.

Porsche Motorsport, as you've Never Seen it Before

On 20th July 2019, Porsche enthusiasts from all over the world will gather in the picturesque grounds of the Donington Hall estate in Leicestershire to see some of the finest motorsport-inspired Porsches together in one place, for the very first time.

The inaugural Rennsport Collective event will be a true celebration of Porsche Motorsport, with a uniquely curated collection of rare and sought-after road and race cars on display and driving the parade circuit.

The Rennsport Collective is an exclusive group of Porsche enthusiasts who are owners of motorsport-inspired Porsches from across the globe.

The Collective aims to share its passion for Porsche Motorsport with fellow enthusiasts across the world, and bring together some of the finest Porsches ever made in an environment that truly does them justice.

The Rennsport Collective event will be open to the public and, for one day only, will give guests the opportunity to see one of the largest collections of motorsport-inspired Porsches ever brought together in the UK.

Not only will the cars be displayed against the beautiful backdrop of Donington Hall, but guests can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the cars as they take to the parade circuit for a celebratory lap or two.

The collection will be curated by colour, not by car-type or time period. This will showcase the connections between cars from different eras and styles, brought together in a range of complementary colour palettes. You may find a 991.2 GT2 RS road car in racing yellow alongside the yellow 911 S/T driven by Gerard Larrousse on the Tour de France to third place in 1970; next to the 1995 BPR World Championship winning 993 GT2.

Offering a sneak preview of some of the unique cars that will be in attendance at the event, a series of short films are in development highlighting notable Porsches that form part of the Rennsport Collective. The first of the films are available to view now on the Rennsport Collective YouTube channel.

Paul Geudon, Founder of Rennsport Collective, said:
“Born out of a lifelong passion for all things Porsche, the Rennsport Collective is a group like no other. It’s a movement – joining together like-minded and knowledgeable enthusiasts who own a very specific and highly regarded collection of motorsport Porsches – and putting this event together has been a fascinating process.
“It has also been fantastic to bring two automotive legends on board – former evo and Motor Sport editor, Nick Trott, and renowned photographer, Rémi Dargegen, who have been instrumental in the development of Rennsport Collective and this inaugural event.
“The July gathering is the first of its kind and it will be exciting to have such a diverse range of cars in one place for the first time. It really will be a must-attend event for any Porsche motorsport fan and we look forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world to Donington Hall this summer.”

A limited number of tickets are still available for the public- to book your place for this one-off event or to find out more about the Rennsport Collective, visit www.rennsportcollective.com

ASSA ABLOY Offer Secure Education Solutions as the Number of Pupil Exclusions Increase

After a period of decline the number of pupils being expelled from mainstream schools is increasing, placing more pressure on the need for Pupil Referral Units and the security at these premises, which is vital for managing student and staff safety.

ASSA ABLOY High Security & Safety Group offers a range of locks and doors suited to the sensitive needs of Pupil Referral Units and pupils in care.

The breadth of doorset solutions means the High Security & Safety Group can specify products for every area and need of a secure education environment. From classroom doors and personnel doors to circulation doors and high-performance doors.

All doorsets in the Secure Education range are independently tested and certified to achieve 60minute fire resistance integrity and insulation to BS EN 1634 from both sides of the door. In addition, all doors within the offering are tested in line with the Department of Health’s environmental design guide attack test for secure services, as well as meeting with DD171 & BS EN 1192 severe duty performance and strength, and are tested to PAS 24 enhanced security performance requirements.

This guaranteed and certified level of performance gives building owners and users the peace of mind that all doorsets are fit for purpose, as well as providing the added level of security and safety often needed in secure educational facilities.

Mike Dunn, Commercial Director for ASSA ABLOY High Security & Safety Group, said:
“A recent report by the think tank IPPR, found the total number of children being taught in “alternative provision” for excluded children is far higher than the total number of reported exclusions. This will inevitably mean increasing pressure on facilities, such as Pupil Referral Units, and the safety of staff and pupils within those buildings.
“Pupil Referral Units are first and foremost a place of education and therefore doors and locks must allow for this, grant access, as well as restricting permissions. However, an added level of security and safety must be considered and handled sensitively within these premises. Our experience and wide product range means we can advise on and supply doors and locks for every aspect of a secure education environment, mitigating any risk and ensuring a smooth specification process.”

Doors within the Secure Education range come in a variety of materials and finishes, giving specifiers improved design flexibility.

‘Fire safety must be priority in new-build homes’ urges DHF, following BBC investigation

Tamworth-based trade association, DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) is emphasising the importance of making fire safety an ‘absolute priority’ in new-build homes, following an investigation into potentially dangerous fire safety issues in houses developed by Persimmon Homes and Bellway Homes.

The findings, by BBC Watchdog Live, highlighted that a number of new-builds constructed by the firms were sold with missing or incorrectly installed fire barriers, which are used to form a complete seal between different areas of a home, and prevent the spread of fire.  Without them, experts say, fire and smoke can spread five-to-ten times faster.

“The BBC’s Watchdog discovered serious breaches that had gone undetected during the construction process, leaving homes and lives potentially at risk in the event of a fire,” explains DHF’s Commercial Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“In many new builds, particularly timber-framed buildings, fire barriers are a vital part of fire protection and we would urge house builders to ‘get it right’ at the construction stage and to have a workforce that is trained in, and understands, the importance of installing the fire barriers required to prevent potential problems down the line.  Ultimately, responsibility for ensuring that buildings are compliant with Building Regulations lies with the house builder.”

Following the investigation, Bellway Homes stated that it was ‘committed to improvement’ with regards to potentially flawed fire safety issues in developments in Kent and West Lothian, and that mandatory training on, amongst other subjects, fire stopping, has been introduced for all relevant construction staff.

Following the Grenfell disaster in June 2017, DHF’s voice has been one of the loudest and most passionate in its call for third-party certification by a UKAS-accredited body of manufacture, installation, maintenance and inspection of fire, smoke and security doors, in order to offer complete assurance on their performance.  With a history and heritage dating back to 1897, the federation is undoubtedly one of the most revered organisations, widely respected as the industry’s independent authoritative voice.

Fierce advocates for appropriate levels of training across all the sectors that it serves, DHF continues to place the importance of training firmly ‘up-front-and-centre’.  The organisation works assiduously with BRE Academy to offer fire door training courses; this has been central to its on-going fire safety campaign.

Additionally, in March 2019, DHF announced a high-profile collaboration with Secured by Design (SBD) and Fire Industry Association (FIA) to publish a guidance document on fire safety.  Named A Guide for Selecting Flat Entrance Doorsets; A publication for housing associations, landlords, building owners and local authorities in England, the publication accentuates the key issues of fire safety for those selecting fire doorsets, recommending all fire doorsets are factory-prepared (as opposed to prepared on-site), that all work be completed under factory production control, and in addition, audited by a third-party.
“Since Grenfell, the wider issue of fire safety has been thrust into the spotlight and we are delighted that progress is being made in this regard,” said Patricia.  “We continue to stress that the use of fire doors, correctly installed and with robust fire door maintenance procedures, are an essential part of fire safety and urge those in positions of responsibility (such as house builders) to ensure that they are not only fulfilling regulations, as well as legal and moral obligations, but insisting upon appropriate levels of training with regards to installation and maintenance.”

Introducing dormakaba’s New Access Solution

Leading manufacturer of access and security solutions, dormakaba, has launched its first revolving direct drive.

The direct drive’s ultra-thin design and modular functionality makes it a versatile solution for a wide range of installations. And because dormakaba’s direct drive does not include gearing components or transmission belts and chains, issues resulting from wear can be reduced.

One of the major down sides to conventional revolving door drive systems is susceptibility to wear - this can cause increased operating noise, uneven rotational movement or non-precise turnstile acceleration and deceleration. dormakaba’s new direct drive system for revolving doors has removed the need for belts or chains – therefore reducing the chance of wear to the drive.

The new direct drive uses magnetic induction to rotate the revolving door panels. This is a more energy efficient and reliable solution, especially for buildings with high foot traffic such as commercial and office spaces.

The KTV3 and KTV4 revolving doors are now available with dormakaba’s new direct drive technology. The ultra-thin design of the direct drive makes the revolving doors sleeker and means the canopy height can be reduced to measurements from just 100mm.

Modular functionality also makes for easy upgradeability, without the need to replace the motor or control unit, providing the adaptability needed to install across a wide range of projects.

Lee Chandler, Product Marketing Manager – Automatic Entrance Systems at dormakaba explains more:

“The invisible direct drive system, control panels and reduced canopy height make the KTV3 and KTV4 revolving doors an elegant access solution. Providing a smooth, quiet door operation with a reduction in wear due to the elimination of gearing components and transmission belts and chains is a major benefit for the end user, as additional costs from maintenance can be reduced. Increased positioning accuracy also limits the temperature exchange between the interior and exterior of a building, reducing the chance of drafts.”

The Complete Industrial Door from DOCO UK

SOMMER DOCO UK is offering a complete industrial door using an amalgamation of the best components available. The door gear, of course, is from DOCO, with standard, vertical, low headroom or high-lift options.

The track benefits from safety and easy-install features.  It is designed to stop the rollers exiting the track or curves throughout the complete operation cycle and the alignment profiles ensure a perfectly squared door without the hassle of cross measuring and adjusting.

DOCO offers a selection of spring-types including shot-blasted and powder-coated springs which are lighter, therefore easier to assemble and having a longer lifetime are consequently a cost-effective solution.

Many DOCO door gear parts are also available in stainless steel, making it ideal for use in coastal, food and pharmaceutical environments.

To complement the DOCO gear, the ‘complete industrial door’ will be fitted with a GIGAsedo from the SOMMER industrial operator range. The GIGAsedo, has a powerful, low-noise and low-vibration motor giving smooth and efficient operation and years of service. (It is of course fitted with an integrated dead-man switch.)

The GIGAcontrol A unit, which is universal for all SOMMER industrial operators, has a five-line LCD text display and menu guidance to ease configuration, enabling you to programme the door to suit specific requirements.  Password protection on the GIGAcontrol ensures that there is no accidental or malicious change to programming.

GIGAcontrol A enables diagnostics and programming changes to be made from ground-level, lessening the requirements for working at height and holds service data, giving vital information such as cycle-use.

The panels for the ‘complete door’ are from Kingspan, widely known for their quality panels for many areas of construction. Kingspan ‘ward’ panels come with traditional joint detail or FINGERsafe protection (for doors less than 2.5m high).

Kingspan Industrial panels benefit from Kingspan IPN FIREsafe technology. SOMMER DOCO UK stock the Plastisol panels in all of the popular colours, as well as their painted panels.

Of course, DOCO’s parts service for emergency repairs and spares for service jobs, is still a major part of the SOMMER DOCO UK business.

Having a strong stock holding of parts for next day delivery and a panel cutting service for swift replacement ensures that you can keep your service levels high and your customers premises safe and secure!

So, for quality and service, choose SOMMER DOCO UK:

London Concours Celebrates ‘The Lost Marques’

Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica

The London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, will be celebrating some of the world’s greatest ‘lost’ car manufacturers, with a special class full of automotive names lost to the sands of time. The ‘Lost Marques’ class is an homage to names like Alvis, Frazer-Nash, AC, Trident, Iso and more.

But such is the quality of cars on display at London Concours, that the ‘Lost Marques’ cars must also be incredibly rare. Only 413 examples of the beautiful Bertone-designed Iso Grifo were ever built, combining elegant Italian style and raw American muscle.

With engines borrowed from the Chevrolet Corvette the Grifo was, at the time, one of the fastest production cars in the world, capable of well over 140mph. The example at London Concours is the most powerful Grifo GL 365 variant.

Rarer still is the Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica on display at London Concours, one example of just 50 produced. With a dependable six-cylinder Bristol engine under the bonnet, the Le Mans proved to be enormously successful in period, notching up wins at the Targa Florio in 1951 and at Sebring in 1952.

The car on display at London Concours was bought new by the man that ran Bristol Cars for more than 50 years, Tony Crook.

Iso Grifo GL

The little-known Trident Clipper V8 was originally intended to be TVR's range topper, the TVR Trident, and was featured in early TVR brochures and adverts. Powered by the Ford 289 engine and clothed in an elegant body styled by ace designer Trevor Fiore (who was later Director of Design for Citroen), it was blisteringly quick; 0-60mph took just 5 seconds! TVR’s financial difficulties led to Trident being set up as a separate company, producing a total of 39 cars, one of which is coming to London Concours.

The AC 16/80 on display is the very first of just 14 'Sloping-Tail' examples, and the actual 1938 London Motor Show car. It’s appearance at London Concours will be the first time this car has been publicly exhibited since its export to the USA in the 1960s.

Then there’s the arguably unique Alvis Graber Super Cabriolet, the very car displayed at the 1965 Geneva Auto Salon, and ordered as a special commission by Julian Oishei, the man credited with bringing the windscreen wiper to the world. With its all-aluminium coachwork over traditional ash frame it’s an intriguing blend of craftsmanship and innovation.

With an offering of nearly 100 automotive icons from the modern day to the early 20th Century, the Honourable Artillery Company’s glorious five-acre lawn will be transformed into a motoring utopia between 5-6 June. But London Concours is not just about the cars on display; it’s an automotive garden party complete with art from Collier Dobson and Ella Freire, drinks from Rémy Martin and Veuve Clicquot, and fashion from Mason & Sons.

Andrew Evans, London Concours Director, said:
“Car manufacturers do come and go, but before they fade away they always leave an indelible mark on the industry. Many of the cars in our ‘Lost Marques’ class are beautifully designed, ingeniously engineered and contemporarily revered. In short, they deserve to be celebrated! For us London Concours is the perfect place to do that; our event is an ode to the finest craftsmanship and design, not just in automotive, but across fashion, horology, art and more.”

The London Concours 2019 takes place from 5-6 June. Tickets are available to buy now from www.londonconcours.co.uk/tickets
