New Hardware Kits take the confusion out of Fire Door Specification

HOPPE - Fire Door Hub - Office door (locking)

A new complete range of fire door kits are available for installers looking to fit fire doors in commercial buildings, but are unsure about which door hardware they should use.

Fire doors are a life-saving feature, engineered to hold back flames and smoke allowing evacuation and access routes to remain clear for fire and rescue services, and helping to protect people and property. It is imperative that all fire door installations comply with fire safety regulations to ensure they perform as stated in the event of a fire.

HOPPE - Fire Door Hub - Corridor door (non-locking)

HOPPE (UK) has worked alongside Doras Distributors and Spanish fire door manufacturer Norma Doors Technologies, to create a fully compliant fire door solution for non-specialist installers.

Installers will be able to simply choose from a selection of Norma FD30 doors, find the corresponding architectural ironmongery kit, and then they will have everything they need for a fully compliant fire door.

There are five fire door hardware kits designed to meet the needs of commercial buildings. Available to buy off the shelf from builders’ merchants, installers can purchase kits for use on corridor doors (both locking and non-locking), bathroom doors, office doors and deadlocking doors.

HOPPE - Fire Door Hub - Bathroom door (locking)

Ged Ryan, CEO of HOPPE (UK), said:
“We know that choosing products for fire doors can be very confusing. With various test sheets, symbols and quality marks it is difficult to know which products work together, or where they can and can’t be used. Our aim is to make the process as quick and easy as possible, so that installers can get on with the job with complete confidence that the fire door assembly is compliant.”

HOPPE - Fire Door Hub - Corridor door (locking)

As standard, the kit contains a sash lock; a lever handle on a sprung rose; a pull handle; a euro profile cylinder with turn; stainless steel hinges; escutcheons; cylinder pull; disabled bathroom turn and release; fire door keep locked or keep shut sign; overhead door closer; single cylinder and two intumescent packs, but some kits may contain additional items depending on where the door will be fitted.

HOPPE - Fire Door Hub - Deadlocking door

The fire door kit has been tested specifically for use on Norma FD30 fire doors to both European and British standards, and is third-party certificated by Certifire and Ensatec, so installers can be confident that the fire door will perform as stated on the box.

For more information on the fire door kit, please contact Glen Butler on 01902 484418 or Glen.Butler@hoppe.com.

Coastal Group MD Loren Jenner said:
“So many homeowners today still want the traditional looking hardware because it suits the design and style of their of their property. But with this traditional hardware comes traditional issues – namely – it’s highly likely to rust quickly and fail to operate properly in no time at all.
“That often means going back to site to replace poor performing iron hardware – wasting valuable time and money. So problematic is it that many manufacturers are reluctant to fit this type of hardware in the first place, as they know how quickly it’s likely to fail. It’s very nature, with inconsistent fixing points, make it difficult to use along with CNC machinery on assembly lines.
“With the DuraTiqueTM handles we’ve solved that issue and CNC machined the handle backplates to ensure consistency of screw holes and handle centres. You can use DuraTiqueTM Antique Hardware knowing you won’t have any issues in your production lines and that wherever your doors end up, that hardware isn’t going to fail.”
Loren added: “By fitting our new DuraTiqueTM Stainless Steel Antique Hardware you benefit from a range which just won’t corrode. It brings your doors durability, performance, consistency and quality in equal measure, backed up by a 25 year guarantee for added peace of mind.”

Secured by Design Crime Prevention Measures to Feature in Barking Riverside Development

Tens of thousands of Londoners are set to enjoy secure new homes on many of the largest developments taking place around the capital – thanks to the Metropolitan Police and Secured by Design, the national police crime prevention initiative.

Police officers trained in designing out crime have been working with local authority planners, architects and developers at the planning stage to ‘build in’ crime prevention measures and techniques.

Secured by Design (SBD) security standards help ensure that the physical security of the buildings, such as doors, windows and locks, will be of sufficient robust quality to deter and reduce crime.

One such scheme is at Barking Riverside where 10,800 new homes are being built for nearly 30,000 residents in one of the largest and most ambitious housing schemes in Europe.

Situated on the site of the former Barking Power Station, it boasts 2km of South-facing River Thames frontage to the East of Canary Wharf and the Thames Barrier. As well as new houses and apartments with a target of 50% affordable homes, there will be seven new schools, including five primary schools, one secondary school and another for special educational needs as well as shops, restaurants, leisure, healthcare and community facilities.

The London Overground is being extended to include a new train station for the development, which is due to be completed in 2021. Barking Riverside station will provide commuters with a 22-minute journey into the City of London. New bus routes are in place already, connecting residents to Dagenham Dock and Barking Stations.

The project is being delivered by Barking Riverside Limited, a partnership between L&Q, one of the UK’s leading housing associations, and the Greater London Authority. Building work started on the 443-acre site in 2017 and is due to be completed in 2032.

Residential developments that have SBD crime prevention measures included in the physical security of buildings and their layout and landscaping, have been proven to reduce crime by up to 87% for each and every year in the lifetime of a development.

Commander Mark McEwan, of the Metropolitan Police, said:
“We are helping to create safer communities. It will result in a significant reduction in demand for the Metropolitan Police and its partners.
“It highlights what can be achieved through effective partnership working, in this case with housing developers, architects and local authorities, creating communities with up to 87% less crime compared to non-Secured by Design developments.”

SBD is a police initiative that improves the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings to provide safe places to live, work, shop and visit - find out more at www.securedbydesign.com .

Vauxhall Veteran Takes on London to Brighton Run for 64th Time

Vauxhall Motors is fielding two pre-1905 cars from its Heritage Collection in this year’s Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, one of which has entered the famous event at least 64 times since 1927.

Both cars were built in the first two years of Vauxhall’s existence, when its manufacturing base was in the eponymous South London suburb, and it was becoming established as one of the most prestigious car brands in the early twentieth century.

The younger of the two cars, a 6HP Light Car, registered JNM 400, has entered the Run at least 64 times, according to Vauxhall’s records, making it one of only two cars in the history of the event that has left the starting line on more than 60 occasions. But that near unrivalled record has almost been matched by its finishing medals, which total 60 to date – no mean feat, given the age, size and simplicity of the car.

JNM 400 first entered the Run in 1927, driven by Vauxhall’s then retired Managing Director, Percy Kidner. It then spent some time in Australia, before Vauxhall bought it for its Heritage Collection in 1946, and started sending it to Brighton again from 1950 onwards.

Powered by a single-cylinder, 1029cc petrol engine, delivering drive to the rear axle via a two-speed epicyclic gearbox and chain, this 6HP was one of the last to be built with tiller steering. But in other respects it was quite advanced, with coil-spring suspension and a very early form of unitary construction.

Vauxhall’s 1903 5HP Light Car, registered BS 8213, is the world’s oldest surviving four-seat Vauxhall, and the 45th car built by the company. Originally delivered to a Dumbarton shipbuilder at a cost of £154 3s 3d, the 5HP was purchased for the Collection in 1995 and has been a regular entrant in the London to Brighton Run since then.

In their day, these diminutive cars helped forge an enviable reputation for Vauxhall – now Britain’s oldest surviving car brand – as an innovative, pioneering manufacturer, whose products were at the forefront of engineering and design excellence. They were frequently entered in durability trials when new with much success, so it’s no surprise that they’ve had such a good record in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run over the last 90-plus years.

This year, 5HP will be driven by Vauxhall’s Managing Director, Stephen Norman, and Communications Director, Jeremy Townsend, in his first London to Brighton Run. At the tiller of 6HP will be Vauxhall’s Head of PR, Simon Hucknall, and journalist Glen Waddington from Octane magazine, another London to Brighton novice.

Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which celebrates the abolishment of the 1896 Act of Parliament requiring cars to be preceded by someone on foot waving a red flag, and the raising of the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph, starts at Hyde Park this year on Sunday, November 3. A total of 418 vehicles have entered this year’s Run.

It's crystal clear - Customer Service Matters as Evander makes shortlist for Business Awards

Judges in the Norfolk Business Awards have selected the long-standing Norwich-based glazing and security business, Evander, as a finalist for the Customer Care award.

Every aspect of the customer experience that drives customer loyalty and better commercial performance was scrutinised by the judges, who have chosen a shortlist of businesses which demonstrated how they exemplify outstanding customer service, consistently delivered at the highest level, by a customer focused team.

Evander Glazing and Locks Limited, part of the VPS Group, is the UK's leading provider of responsive, pre-planned and emergency home & commercial insurance glazing solutions. Their interaction with customers often begins as the result of a distressing incident, such as a break-in or a broken window.

They can be the first responders on site, so they often see customers at their most vulnerable, and the judge's panel were impressed by Evander's staff training to ensure the way they interact with customers, even down to the appearance of the engineers, the voice manner, the time spent on site and the time taken to reassure the customer, recognised that these have a profound impact on the customer experience.

In 2018 Evander engineers visited over 125,000 properties from 19 depot locations based across the UK.

Operating from their headquarters in Norfolk for 35 years, Evander impressed the panel by a raft of customer care initiatives that has helped the company gain an enviable 9.3 out of 10 score on Trust Pilot from over 1500 customer reviews. As a result, Evander is best in class across the glazing community, with major competitors falling short in comparison.

The winners will be announced at a gala Awards ceremony at the Norwich Showground Arena, on November 21st, with the actor James Nesbitt hosting the event.

Evander have already been shortlisted for several awards in 2019, including the Insurance Times Claims Awards for Customer Service Solution of the Year, and the John Connell Noise Abatement Awards for their noise insulation project for Highways England.

UNION supports National Home Security Month 2019

UNION is supporting National Home Security Month (NHSM) 2019, an annual campaign raising awareness of home security and the importance of taking precautions to protect families, property and belongings.

The campaign runs throughout October, coinciding with the start of autumn when the nights start to draw in and the clocks go back an hour. The nationwide initiative was launched by UNION’s sister brand Yale.

Burglaries are more likely to involve forced entry into unoccupied houses during the autumn and winter months. Yet many still admit to having no security precautions at home, leaving their property and loved ones at risk.

To tackle this, NHSM was set-up to offer seasonal tips and advice. The initiative highlights a different element of home security during each week of the campaign, so homeowners can take steps to minimise the risk of being targeted by burglars.

Eryl Jones, Managing Director for ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware & Access Control Group said:
“We are delighted to be sponsoring NHSM for the sixth year running. The campaign is a highlight in the calendar year for the security industry, offering UNION a fantastic platform to talk about issues such as product testing, quality control and our latest solutions to locksmiths, installers and stockists.
“UNION supplies a compliant range of solutions for the residential sector, including the renowned StrongBOLT, which meets important standards such as BS 3621. This provides a vital benchmark for insurance companies to measure the robustness of door locks and help homeowners ensure their properties remain secure.”

UNION has contributed a blog to the NHSM website, discussing what BS 3621 means for homeowners. Have you checked if your lock is BS 3621 compliant? Read more on the importance of BS 3621 here: www.homesecuritymonth.com/what-bs-3621-means-for-homeowners.

dormakaba Unlocks Success at Temple Farm Development

Leading manufacturer of access and security solutions, dormakaba has had a number of its Dorma TS92 and TS93 Door Closers solutions and BTS80 floor sprung hinges specified as part of a major development in Chelmsford. Once completed, the project will become the new headquarters for the Jehovah’s Witnesses organisation.

When the organisational body of the Jehovah’s Witnesses began its search for a new headquarters, those involved had a specific idea of what they wanted from the project. Set on delivering the desired outcome, the team searched over 300 sites before deciding on the Temple Farm Development in Chelmsford. The project team’s search for excellence carried over into the build process, with only the highest-quality building products used throughout the development. To this end, the team specified a number of door solutions from dormakaba’s industry-leading product portfolio.

Choosing dormakaba was a logical choice for the project team, who had put safety and sustainability as a top priority on the build. The company offers long-life, door technology solutions specifically designed for premium design quality, build longevity and compliance. As well as being high-quality, dormakaba represents a single-source solution, allowing the project team to save time sourcing and securing different elements from across the supply chain. Instead, the project team could rely on the company to deliver all the necessary units needed for an effective and sustainable solution.

Such reliability was crucial, as the Temple Farm Development is a significant project, spread across 85 acres on the site of a former scrapyard. The project comprises an office block, two warehouse buildings, a sports hall and a swimming pool building. The site will also feature six residence blocks, which will eventually house the staff who work on the live-work headquarters. One of the blocks will be dedicated to the early and infirm members of the headquarter ‘family’ including a wing devoted to aged volunteers who now require round the clock care.

Additionally, the team on site have built a multi-purpose building that can be used for events and gatherings. dormakaba’s Dorma TS92 and TS93 Door Closers have been installed on the doors accessing the kitchens and changing rooms across this multi-purpose building. Suitable for all project application requirements, the door closer systems provide a high-quality architectural solution. The systems feature dormakaba’s heart-shaped cam to ensure exceptional ease of opening. As well as being practical, the systems are CERTIFIRE approved and have all been successfully third party tested to BS EN1154.

Graham Hulland commented:
“We take great pride in being part of developments like the Temple Farm Development, which put safety and sustainability as a top priority. Not only has the site received an ‘Outstanding’ assessment from BREEAM but it has delivered a net gain in ecological biodiversity achieved in the surrounding area. The development has been five years in the making and we can’t wait to what the finished article looks like.”

Since 2014, well over four million volunteer hours have been delivered at the Temple Farm Development highlighting how important the project is for those involved. Together, all parties have built a project that’s designed to turn heads and receive acclaim. Already, BREEAM have praised the site for the admirable way it’s helped to reduce carbon emissions and congestion on surrounding roads. As a result, the project has already become only the second development to receive an ‘Outstanding’ assessment by BREEAM under its community scheme.

Survey Reveals Many People Leave it too Late to Secure their Homes

In the month when clocks go back and evenings get darker, tradespeople are being urged to remind their customers of the importance of home security after a survey by IronmongeryDirect found that 85% were only asked to fit security products after a break-in.

The survey results have been published by the online ironmongery supplier in support of National Home Security Month, which runs throughout October and aims to raise awareness around the importance of home security to help protect the nation’s homes, families and possessions.

Despite the rise in smart security products, the survey, which was completed by 2,000 tradespeople, also revealed that only 7% are regularly asked about fitting smart security products, with 57% never asked at all. This is backed up by research by the National Home Security Month campaign which shows that 28% of UK adults take no security precautions at home.

When the Office of National Statistics (ONS) released its latest crime statistics earlier this year, it revealed that 1 in every 65 homes in England and Wales were burgled in the previous 12-month period.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, Managing Director at IronmongeryDirect, said:
“Having a good level of home security is vital and it’s important that tradespeople advise their customers on the options available to them in order to prevent potential break-ins.
“There are a wide range of products available to help keep a building safe and secure – from a basic lock to sophisticated alarm systems. There is also an increasing number of smart technology products available, providing remote monitoring to secure a property.”

For any advice and support on the best products to enhance the security of a property, visit iromongerydirect.co.uk or call 0800 168 28 28.

Norseal Gives a Hand to Finger Safety

Fingers trapped in doors at the hinge edge are one of the most common accidents in schools, nurseries and other education settings. ROSPA estimates that 30,000 children are injured in finger trapping accidents every year.

Designed for high traffic areas to withstand the knocks that pupils will inflict in the everyday life of a school, Norseal’s finger-protection products are engineered to last, to reduce maintenance costs, and provide exceptional finger protection without an institutional look.

Some hospitals estimate that up to 2% of admissions to A&E are the result of fingers getting trapped in doors. Financially, the cost can also be high. Compensation experts estimate that a low-level hand injury could result in a pay-out between £700 and £3,400 - for a crushing injury resulting in pain that lasts for no longer than a couple of months. If a hand injury results in ongoing symptoms, the value of the claim can increase to as much as £10,000.

Norseal offers a range of seals that protect and prevent fingers from being trapped in doors, both surface-mounted and fully-integrated for new doors and retro-fit projects.

Central to the Norseal range is the NOR200, a no-nonsense surface mounted finger protection solution. Made from high quality plastic available in white and brown, this protector can be easily and cost-effectively fitted in minutes and will provide lasting protection having been tested up to 1,000,000 cycles.

The full set comes with parts for both sides of the door: a large cover for the opening side gap, as well as a smaller knuckle protector for the smaller gap on the other side of the hinge. Both parts are supplied with high-tack self-adhesive, and pins are also supplied for extra hold in high traffic areas.

In a school with eighty doors, Norseal estimates that to the cost of fitting a Norseal NOR200 system to every door would be a fraction of the expense of lawsuits, bad media coverage and outcry from parents. This is before considering the moral and ethical responsibilities of the school to protect their children.

The full range of Norseal finger protections systems can be seen at www.norseal.co.uk/browse/finger-protection

Klimate K2 High Speed Freezer Doors installed at Supermarket Chain Distribution Centre

Klimate K2 High Speed Freezer Doors, proven to improve performance in food cold stores whilst lowering operating costs, have been installed at a supermarket chain distribution centre.

Following the successful installation of 74 K2 Freezer Doors at one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains distribution centres, Klimate High Speed Doors, a trading division of BID Group Ltd, with over 25 years experience in the design, manufacture, installation, service and repair of high speed doors, unveil their improved revolutionary frost free high speed door, the ‘Klimate K2’.

Reducing your carbon footprint is increasingly important these days but can be aided by using the Klimate K2 High Speed Freezer Door on Freezer and Chilled areas. The doors will help to improve traffic flow and minimise variation in temperatures which in turn will reduce costly energy loss and therefore improve the efficiency of your freezer. In addition to this the K2 Freezer door itself is energy efficient as it only requires a 20 Amp supply.

The Klimate K2 High Speed Freezer Door is versatile as it can be installed on either the chilled, ambient or freezer side of the opening.

All Klimate doors are engineered to the highest quality with a minimum of wearing parts and the K2 is no exception. The K2 is made in the UK of heavy galvanized steel and is then powder coated providing an easily cleanable surface with maximum strength to resist impact and shocks, which are inevitable in a busy through way.

In addition to the fast operation speed other features include:

  • An adjustable air defrost system which ensures the door remains ice and condensation free automatically switching off when the door is opened, reducing energy by up to 50%.
  • Hinged, re-settable breakaway tabs which reduce the risk of severe damage to the bottom rail in the event of impact.
  • New generation, programmable diagnostic control panel with LED screen which shows the current status of the door.
  • Pays back on initial investment in less than two years compared to competitors doors.

Characteristic of all Klimate, high-speed doors, the simplistic nature of the door means that any minimal maintenance work can be quickly and easily undertaken in-house, drastically reducing down time and callout charges.

Hardwearing, plastic re-settable end cassettes are fitted with a monitoring switch that stops the door if it is impacted. This in-turn will require a re-set which can be undertaken without tools by onsite maintenance personnel. The switch can also be programmed to activate alarms, beacons or even send a text message or email notifying that the door has been damaged.

The location of any fault will be clearly displayed on the new generation control unit designed for high-speed doors.

Any faults and stop-downs may generally then be handled in house with the support of the Klimate technical department who are on hand when the need arises to offer free guidance.

Visit the Klimate website for more information or to arrange a free site survey.

TomTom Telematics Asset Tracking Allows Companies to Monitor their Powered Assets

TomTom Telematics has officially added a new feature to their WEBFLEET fleet management solution. Asset Tracking gives companies visibility over the position and usage of their powered assets, such as trailers, generators and other equipment.

From a single interface, the position of both vehicles and assets are displayed on a clear map view. Users can choose to be alerted when an asset is being used, when it leaves a designated area or when any motion is detected.

This helps reduce both the risk of theft and the likelihood of improper usage. Notifications can also be setup to alert the user when maintenance is required, which helps to preserve the value of the asset.

Paul Verheijen, VP Product Management, TomTom Telematics said:
“Our focus is always on providing insight and making the working process simpler, safer and more efficient,”
“And that’s precisely what Asset Tracking does.
“The user can find out the location of each asset in seconds, whether it’s on-site or off. If they want more detail, they can get instant reports 24/7 listing current position, trip, maintenance, input and all the other details regarding how the asset is being used.
“And they can setup a maintenance notification based on the odometer, operating time or time since the last maintenance – whatever is most suitable for judging that an asset needs to be serviced.
“Essentially, it provides a host of functionalities that support the user to get the most value and productivity out of each specific asset.”

New PAS24 Automatic Sliding Door System from Jack Aluminium

Commercial aluminium systems specialist Jack Aluminium has partnered with Geze UK to create the first PAS24 approved automatic sliding door system.

It’s been designed to fill a gap in the healthcare and care home sectors, where residents and care teams need the convenience of sliding doors, but safety and security is also paramount.

The new system was first launched at The FIT Show in May on the Geze stand which was part of the Council for Aluminium Building (CAB) pavilion.

Jeff Pearson, Sales & Marketing Director at Jack Aluminium Systems, explains:
“We knew from talking to customers that there was a real market for an automatic sliding door system that could meet the high levels of security that these healthcare facilities need.
“This new product resolves this issue for them. It’s available in single and double sliding door configurations. The doors are automatic so that residents, staff and visitors can easily enter the building. And it’s PAS24 approved and SBD compliant too – a great addition to our range of secure, communal entrance doors.
“At Jack Aluminium, we create systems that design out compromise and this is another great example of that. It offers a highly durable and secure remote access door system that aids the functionality of a building.”

The system uses Jack Aluminium’s JD47 Non-thermal Door & Shopfront system and Geze’s bespoke hardware.

Geze is selecting a network of approved fabricators to supply the PAS24 automated sliding door system.

Smoke Seals Halt the Silent Killer

Door seal specialists Norseal offers specifiers a comprehensive technical support package on the lifesaving matter of cold smoke seals. It is a sobering thought that more lives are lost in fires to smoke inhalation than burns.

In buildings like hotels, care homes, hospitals, and apartments where multiple rooms are accessed off a central landing or corridor, smoke can creep with frightening speed through the tiniest gaps with potentially fatal consequences.

While fire doors fitted with intumescent seals are highly effective in halting the spread of fire, the intumescent seals will only operate at the high temperatures generated by fire. They will not halt the progress of cold smoke. Should the smoke from a fire progress in advance of it, the fire door seals will not have started to intumesce, allowing cold smoke to pass through the gaps. This is why it is vital that fire doors are fitted with intumescent seals that can stop both fire and smoke.

Norseal has a comprehensive range of fire and smoke intumescent seals and can offer a full technical advice and back up service for specifiers and installers. The company’s fire and smoke intumescent strips protect both the spread of fire and smoke through a building and are compliant with BS 476-31.1 and BS EN 1634-3 cold smoke seal regulations.

All are independently tested to BS 476-22 and BS EN 1634-1 on a range of single and double leaf doorsets. Smoke seals do not only prevent the spread of smoke in a fire emergency, they also have more everyday benefits like keeping drafts out and even reducing noise. This makes them perfect for buildings like school and offices where acoustic insulation is a key factor.

Norseal’s best-selling fire and smoke seal is the Pyroplex Intumescent Rigid Box Pile which can be fitted to single and double leaf timber interior or exterior door sets. It combines intumescent material with a brush pile to prevent the transfer of both fire and smoke.

Another popular choice is the Pyroplex Intumescent Single Flipper, a practical option for hygienic spaces like hospitals, restaurants and care homes as they can easily be cleaned when spills occur to help to keep areas germ free.

Norseal’s technical team is on hand to answer any specification queries about fire, smoke and acoustic seals. The company also provides CAD drawingss, test data, certifications, fitting guides and datasheets as downloads to access in the design office or on site.

Part of the European Athmer Group, Norseal is the leading provider of specialist door seal solutions, plus a wide range of ancillary door products. The company has a long track record of innovation, developing products which meet and exceed the latest industry standards for fire and smoke protection, acoustic properties, accessibility and thermal insulation.

Products are backed by a qualified and experienced technical team offering advice and guidance on all aspects of intumescent and acoustic seals. As well as its core range of seals, Norseal supply a wide range of supplementary door products including fire-rated glazing, electrical and plumbing solutions, fire rated ventilation, letter plates, door viewers, threshold plates, weather seals, and finger protection products.
