Winners of British Woodworking Federation Awards 2019 celebrated

The winners of the prestigious British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Awards 2019 have been revealed at an evening of celebration held at the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London.

The BWF Awards celebrate outstanding projects and individuals in UK woodworking, recognising technical innovation, design, process efficiencies, health & safety and the rising stars of the industry.

The six categories and winners were:

Woodworking Project of the Year (sponsored by Centor®):

Gowercroft Joinery for the design manufacture and installation of over 300 timber external and internal joinery items at Templeton House, a Grade II listed property in Roehampton. The timber joinery was part of a £32m restoration of the Grade II listed mansion which included sympathetic replacement of the original sliding sash windows, to provide modern levels of performance at no detriment to the historic value of the building.

Apprentice of the Year (sponsored by Remmers):

Bailey Donkin, apprentice at Middlesbrough-based ERW Joinery, has picked up Apprentice of the Year Award for his creativity, innovative approach and outstanding joinery. According to Bailey’s company: “In the four years that Bailey has been with ERW, we have seen him grow to become not only an outstanding joiner but an integral part of our team. His ideas and innovativeness set him apart from not just other apprentices, but many other time-served joiners.”

Product Design in Wood Award (sponsored by Teknos):

Tom Pearson & Sons for a unique replacement entrance door solution that incorporated the original stained glass. The company designed a vented system that incorporated a clear toughened double-glazed unit. The stained glass was then suspended in front and beaded into place, with a vented bottom bead and further venting to the top bead to prevent moisture build up.

The steel bar that the stained glass panels were originally tied to was challenging to incorporate, but the company managed to retain the aesthetics that the client desired at no detriment to the overall performance of the door.

Health & Safety Hero Award (sponsored by CITB):

GE Door Manufacturing for its health & safety first culture to drive continuous improvement across their factory, with clear measurement of colleague engagement and adoption. GE Door Manufacturing has introduced a number of health and safety initiatives over the years. More recently, to monitor progress, the company introduced an innovative scoring outcome system and a near miss reporting system. The company also revisited all personal and machine-related risk assessments to ensure they still met the needs of users.

Process Efficiency Award (sponsored by W20 Exhibition & the FIT Show):

West Port Timber Windows & Doors for its fire door manufacturing project which focused upon customer value by reducing waste. By reducing waste throughout its fire door manufacturing processes West Port Timber Windows & Doors were able to significantly improve efficiency across several key areas. A faster turn-around time to meet customer demand was key to this project.

Rising Star Award (Sponsored by the Timber Trade Federation):

Carol Bruce, HR Manager at Allan Brothers, was named as the BWF Rising Star of 2019 for her support of colleagues and guidance across the business which has been pivotal to the company’s recent transformation programme. According to Carol’s company, “Her support of colleagues and guidance across the business has been pivotal to the success of a recent change transformation project.”
Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of the BWF, said:
“Congratulations to this year’s winners who all epitomise the talent, creativity and professionalism of our wider industry. The standard of entries this year was truly exceptional, and the judges had no easy task separating them.
“The BWF Awards shine a light on the innovative companies and individuals that push the boundaries of woodworking and joinery, as well as recognising the stars and leaders of tomorrow. Our sector makes a significant contribution to the UK’s construction and manufacturing industries, and it’s fantastic to come together at the BWF Awards to champion the outstanding talent and achievement that make our industry so successful.”

UNION launches new Fire Door Kit range

UNION is cutting the hassle out of sourcing fire door hardware with its new Fire Door Kits, featuring a complete range of pre-selected products that work seamlessly together, look good and meet every relevant standard.

The role of a fire door in supporting fire safety and integrity within a building is critical.  UNION’s Fire Door Kit is a single box solution that helps installers to ensure that they are fitting correct and fully compliant hardware.

Until now property owners, facilities managers and installers have faced a bewildering variety of hardware choices when installing or maintaining a fire door set. With the UNION Fire Door Kit, all that worry, guesswork and lost time is now a thing of the past.

Designed for common installation situations, each Fire Door Kit combines all the hardware needed to install or repair a fire door. This includes hinges, door closer, lockcase, levers and signage, as well as installation instructions, fitting templates, fixings and the performance sheets to hand over to the building owner for their records.

Crucially, every part included in the Kit is tested to all relevant standards, ensuring the door will meet regulations.

There are four different Fire Door Kits, each designed to work in a specific application. The Sashlock Kit is ideal for locking fire doors, while the Deadlock Kit is a perfect fit for locking storage areas. The Latch Kit is designed for non-locked rooms, and finally the Corridor Kit is used for push-pull non-locking fire doors.

Alison Aston, Category Manager at UNION, said:
“The Fire Door Kit range is the easiest way to install or maintain a fire door. We believe this will be a huge benefit for property owners and tradespeople alike, as they now have a way to ensure a fire door  is fitted with all the hardware it needs to meet legal requirements and work perfectly too.  It’s simple to stock, easy to order, compact to transport and store on site – Kit in one arm, door blank in the other, job done.
“The UNION Fire Door Kit is ideal for any owner/landlord, tradesperson, facilities manager or caretaker wanting to add or maintain a fire door to a property. It brings instant safety, compliance and peace of mind while saving time, and it’s all from UNION, the most trusted name in fire door safety and security.”

Hörmann UK’s SP 500 Sports Doors get Top Honours at Newcastle University

Safety, security and durability were the key criteria when choosing the doors for Newcastle University’s impressive multi-million pound new sports hall facility. With this in mind, Darlington Door Services, the team commissioned to supply and install the doors, was quick to recommend Hörmann UK’s SP 500 sports hall doors.

For more than 30 years, Darlington Door Services has been an official partner of Hörmann UK, supplying a variety of both domestic and commercial doors to customers throughout Northern England. The team was recently commissioned by the contractor to supply and install four extremely durable and resilient up and over sports doors inside the university’s new £16 million state of the art sports facility.

For Newcastle University the new sports hall doors would need to be able to withstand both potential impact damage from ball games and sporting equipment, as well as being able to cope with high usage given the anticipated number of students and staff who will be using the new facility. Hörmann SP 500 sports hall doors were the obvious choice.

Specially designed for schools with recreational and leisure facilities such as university sports halls, Hörmann SP 500 doors are sturdy in design, providing maximum security, safety and durability. Thanks to the elastic impact surface, Hörmann SP 500 sports hall doors provide a force reduction of more than 60% making them ideal for areas where ball games will take place. Additionally, the doors are fitted with a shock-resistant safety track cladding with adjustable plastic rollers on ball bearings to reduce wear and tear and ensure longer periods of maintenance-free use.

Steve Davies, Director for Darlington Door Services, said:
“We have been working closely with Hörmann UK for more than 30 years, so we know that the doors are extremely reliable and offer exceptional performance. For the last three decades that we have worked together, Hörmann UK has always delivered an exceptional level of service and is continuously improving its product offering to exceed industry standards. So, when we were approached by the contractor to supply doors for its impressive new multi-million pound sports hall, Hörmann SP 500 sports hall doors were the ideal choice, exceeding the selection criteria and providing an exceptionally durable and safe solution.
“In terms of installation, these doors are also really easy and straightforward, with the added advantage of being supplied ready to fit for onsite infill,” continued Steve. “For this reason, the contractors opted to infill the doors themselves. Once this was completed, we returned to site and made any necessary adjustments, adding the counter weights to ensure the doors operate safely and correctly. This was a great project to be involved in and both ourselves and the team at Newcastle University were delighted with the final results.”
Hörmann SP 500 doors also offer exceptional levels of safety, another very important selection criteria for Newcastle University. Safety features include vertical and horizontal guide rails to ensure safe door guidance and buffer stops to slow the door down gently when opening and closing. The doors are also designed not to swing out when opened and will not protrude into the sports hall if left open.

In order to reduce the risk of foot injuries, the bottom edge of the door has also been equipped with an elastic trap protection over the entire door width and double-sided latch locks prevent the doors from being unintentionally opened. The doors are installed flush against the wall to avoid sharp corners and the recessed handles are also embedded into the door leaf preventing accidental injury.

Stuart Shaw, National Field Sales Manager at Hörmann UK, added:
“Newcastle University is not only a highly prestigious educational facility but it really is the pride of Newcastle with its iconic buildings sitting in the very heart of the city. The new sports hall redevelopment will provide state of the art facilities for current and future students so it was fantastic to be involved in this project with Darlington Door Services.
“We would like to thank Steve and the team with whom we have built a longstanding and very successful partnership over the last 30 years and we look forward to continuing this partnership for many more years to come.”

Concours of Elegance Wins ‘Motoring Spectacle of the Year’

The world-famous Concours of Elegance has been named ‘Motoring Spectacle of the Year’ at the Royal Automobile Club’s Historic Awards.

Now in its eighth year, the Concours of Elegance has quickly become one of the most acclaimed concours events in the world, welcoming some of the biggest names in the classic car industry and the most eminent collectors from around the world. This latest award cements the event as the best concours d’elegance in the UK.

The Royal Automobile Club's Historic Awards are a new set of annual accolades recognising excellence and outstanding contributions to the UK’s historic motoring and motorsport industries. The Club has been at the heart of the motoring world since its formation in 1897, and the Historic Awards are a natural continuation of a rich heritage.

From 6th to 8th September, Hampton Court Palace hosted a selection of vehicles the likes of which has never been seen in the UK. Arguably a collection of motoring spectacles more than it is just one, Concours of Elegance featured a world-first gathering of every single Aston Martin Zagato model ever built (17 in total), a gathering of 166MM Ferraris, including the most significant Ferrari in the world, the first Bentley to race at Le Mans, the first Bentley to win back-to-back at Le Mans. All spectacular, and all at the Concours of Elegance. But that’s without even mentioning what’s known as the ‘Main Concours’ event.

The Main Concours plays out among the carefully pruned ancient trees and the long-sweeping gravel paths fanning out from the Palace in all directions – it’s the perfect setting for a display of the world’s finest cars. Parked in the grounds of Henry VIII’s former home were the ‘world’s first minivan’, a one-of-nine Stout Scarab, the first car to ever win the Italian Grand Prix – a 1921 Ballot 3/8 LC and a totally unique Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost that would eventually be crowned ‘Best in Show’.

The Concours of Elegance is presented by fine German horologists, A. Lange & Söhne, and will return to the Fountain Gardens of Hampton Court Palace from 4-6th September 2020.

About the annual Concours of Elegance:

Established in 2012, the inaugural Concours of Elegance was held within Windsor Castle to mark the diamond jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. Organised by Thorough Events, the first Concours of Elegance set a new global benchmark for a classic car concours; winning prestigious awards in the process; unheard of for a ‘start-up’ event in its first year.

The second Concours of Elegance was held in 2013 to equal fanfare at the historic Royal Palace of St James in London, with the widely acclaimed third Concours set in the stunning grounds of Hampton Court Palace in September 2014, before heading to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in 2015.

Only cars of the highest calibre are invited to the Concours of Elegance, from all over the world, painstakingly selected by the Concours Steering Committee; a respected team of authoritative historic car experts. A key objective of the annual Concours of Elegance is to raise significant sums for charity.

Survey reveals over half of UK tradespeople have had tools stolen

A new survey by online ironmongery supplier, IronmongeryDirect, has found that 52% of tradespeople have fallen victim to tool theft, with almost a quarter (21%) saying it’s happened to them more than once.

The results of the survey, completed by 1,000 tradespeople, back up the reported 54% rise in tool thefts in the last two years* – with even a quarter of those who haven’t been a victim reporting that they know someone who has.

Each theft is reported to cost a tradesperson on average £1,200**, which equates to typically more than a week’s pay.

Commenting on the survey results, Marco Verdonkschot, Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect, said:
“It is worrying to see that across the industry tool theft numbers are continuing to rise, especially during the dark winter months.
“There are a number of simple steps tradespeople can take to increase their van security such as parking against a wall in a well-lit area when out on a job, installing a van safe or taking their tools inside overnight. To tighten up security even further, van lock protection plates, dashcams or CCTV systems can be fantastic deterrents for would-be thieves.”
For more survey results, please visit www.ironmongerydirect.com.

IronmongeryDirect has over 18,000 products available and in stock. Orders can be placed as late as 8pm for next day delivery from Sunday through to Friday and by 4pm on Saturdays. Free, no quibble returns are available on all products.

For more information, visit IronmongeryDirect.com or call their team of specialist advisors on 0800 168 28 28.

Swing gates are available in single-leaf and double-leaf formats, and all of the new gates can be manufactured in a variety of sizes for use at vehicle and pedestrian access points in a wide range of different sectors.

The Pro-Secure gates have been independently tested and verified as achieving security rating SR1 or SR2 as defined by the internationally recognised LPCB standard LPS 1175 Issue 8.0, and they are therefore listed in the LPCB Red Book.

The LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) is part of BRE Global, a third-party approvals body, and LPS 1175 is the standard for certification of intruder-resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers.

To achieve the SR1 and SR2 certifications, the gates had to be tested and proven to resist sustained attacks using specified hand tools for defined periods.

In most cases Pro-Secure gates will control vehicular access but they are equally suitable for use where large numbers of pedestrians enter or leave a site.

Typical applications include commercial and industrial premises, warehouses and logistics hubs, waste recycling centres, schools and other educational campuses, hospitals and care homes, sports grounds and leisure facilities, data centres, government and defence establishments, airports, docks and utilities sites.

Features that help the SR1 gates achieve their security rating include all-steel robust construction, heavy-gauge 868 wire mesh cladding fully welded to the frame, reinforced latch areas and, for the swing gates, hinge protection plates. The SR2 gates additionally benefit from double cladding with 358 steel mesh to resist cutting and climbing.

All of Procter’s Pro-Secure gates are hot-dip galvanized for long-lasting protection against corrosion. Customers can specify an optional polyester powder coating on top of the galvanizing for additional corrosion protection and improved aesthetics. Standard colours are black and green, or almost any RAL colour can be chosen.

Smaller gates in the Pro-Secure range can be manually operated but larger gates are powered or automated, and these are CE marked to the Machinery Directive.

Procter Contracts provides a comprehensive service that includes site surveys, security risk assessments, design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and, for powered/automated gates, CE marking and maintenance contracts. Furthermore, the company supplies and installs a variety of access control systems for powered and automatic gates.

Hywel Davies, Director of Procter Contracts, comments:
“We have been manufacturing security gates for decades, so it is great news for customers that we now have independent certification by BRE and can market the Pro-Secure gates as LPS 1175 SR1 and SR2 security rated.
“This will be particularly beneficial for specifiers and contractors throughout the UK working on Secured by Design projects, for which we have been an accredited installer for several years.”

To complement the Pro-Secure gates, Procter Contracts can supply and install high-security fencing – including electric pulse fencing – plus CCTV systems and street furniture such as fixed or rising bollards, Armco barrier, rising-arm barriers, speed ramps and one-way flow plates.

Casper™ Cloaking: the new way to stop internal data breaches

New ground-breaking glass technology is the best way to prevent internal data leaks and guarantee data privacy while maintaining a professional office interior according to leading window security provider Protective Film Solutions.

Protected Working Environments

With one in three (34%) data breaches involving internal employees, according to Verizon’s 2019 Data Breach Investigations Report , Protective Film Solutions says that companies who want to protect their data from prying eyes must find ways to mitigate the risk of potentially damaging internal and external security threats, including reviewing their office space.

Modern interior design for office space is often open plan with glass walls to give the illusion of space and an all-inclusive environment, but this becomes problematic when sensitive financial, technical or legal information is due to be presented to senior staff or board members. While frosted or coated glass will block out the view of specific meeting rooms, digital screens containing sensitive data can still be visible to those outside of the room, while covering windows draws unnecessary, unwanted attention.

The Technology

Protective Film Solutions is the only European supplier of the new Casper™ Cloaking Technology by Designtex, an innovative cloak product that provides a smart shield to digital screens without obscuring the glass. Already being used by large American corporations, the state-of-the-art technology obscures the light transmitted by digital screens to outside view, meaning only those in the room can see the content being displayed.

The technology is designed to work with most LED and OLED displays which filter specific light oscillations, by selectively filtering them again and making the display appear as a black screen to outside viewers. Use of such technology does not draw attention to information-sensitive meetings that are digitally displayed, meaning important meetings that might otherwise need to be carried out externally or in private meeting rooms can simply take place in rooms using Casper™ Cloaking Technology by Designtex.

Chris Gould, Commercial Director at Protective Films Solutions, the exclusive distributor of Casper™ Cloaking Technology for EMEA, commented:
“Protecting confidential material and data is of utmost importance for businesses of all sizes and we are proud to offer a simple, effective solution. Casper allows senior teams to discuss and display confidential information without causing suspicion among staff through inconvenient alternatives such as off-site meetings or covered up boardrooms.
“And, as co-working spaces become increasingly popular, the open visibility of screen technology including TVs, computers and laptops is an important factor to consider. Casper is the only solution that means offices can keep their open-plan look and feel without compromising on security.”

Promat’s PYROSEC® 19 combines security, fire and safety for pioneering mother and baby unit

Fire resistant glazing specialist Promat UK has worked with Doorset Technology to help deliver a safe, calm and naturally-lit environment for a specialist healthcare facility developed for mothers who are facing mental health problems.

The new Ribblemere Unit, developed by Lancashire Care NHS Trust at the Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital, provides vitally important care for women experiencing severe mental health problems or who may be at high risk of becoming mentally unwell in the perinatal period.

The state-of-the-art facility, designed by architects Gilling Dod, enables treatment and recovery for mothers while allowing their relationships with their babies to develop, and is staffed by multidisciplinary teams across psychiatry, nursing and nursery care.

The redevelopment project’s focus was on interior design and arts integration. With insights taken from the patients and staff of the unit it replaced, an interior theme of rivers, meadows and natural landscapes was developed, with artist Stella Corrall commissioned to develop bespoke artworks for the scheme.

These appear on many walls and manifestations throughout the Ribblemere Unit, combining with large new windows, glazing, and bright ‘daylight’ lighting to deliver a sense of softness that adds to the uplifting and calming feel.

Doorset Technology, who have a strong track record in providing aesthetically pleasing secure solutions, worked closely with the architects at the design stage to ensure that any products specified would be fit for purpose to obtain a high degree of robustness along with creating an uplifting experience.

Their bespoke timber doorsets and screens featured Promat UK’s PYROSEC® 19 glass for the vision panels.

Marc Evans, Business Development Manager at Doorset Technology states:
“Doorset Technology are currently engaged on a full spectrum of new mental health projects spanning high, medium and low secure facilities along with two young people’s CAMHS units. Our doorset and screen systems for each of these schemes rely on and include PYROSEC® 19 glass for safety, fire protection and mechanical performance in high risk operational areas. Doorset Technology have fire test evidence for PYROSEC® 19 glass in excess of 0.3m2 door vision panel sizes at both FD30 and FD60 performance.”

PYROSEC® 19 was chosen for its outstanding performance characteristics. It is a modified toughened, fire/physical attack resistant glass specifically developed for use in the UK’s most secure facilities within vision panels in doors, side screens and walls.

With full transparency, the dual purpose nature of the glass makes it ideal for use in public sector environments, such as hospitals, social and mental health facilities, as well as police stations and custodial buildings.

As with all glazing solutions available from Promat UK, PYROSEC® 19 is designed and ‘Specified for a Reason®’ to provide a dependable solution to meet very specific building requirements.

It is part of an extensive range of fire, thermal, acoustic insulation products manufactured by Promat in ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 registered facilities which provide supply chain integrity and clear traceability for total end user assurance.

Promat UK’s Segment Manager for Glass, Cath McLean adds:
“Doorset Technology have delivered an outstanding result at the Ribblemere Unit and we are delighted to have worked with them to provide the combination of fire safety and security required in the doorsets. PYROSEC® 19’s ability to optimise natural light and visually connect internal spaces here helped to create the perfect environment to deliver the necessary care, whilst ensuring patients and their children are safe and secure.”

Meridian Water Development in Enfield to meet the Secured by Design ‘Silver Award’

A £6bn, 20-year development of 10,000 homes at Meridian Water, Enfield, North London, is another development benefiting from partnership working by the Metropolitan Police and Secured by Design, the national police crime prevention initiative.

Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) working for the Metropolitan Police have ensured that all the homes are going to meet the Secured by Design ‘Silver Award’ standard to ensure that doors, windows and locks will be of sufficient robust quality to reduce crime and help residents to be safe and secure.

This security standard has been written into the respective local authority planning conditions.

Construction work on the first phase of 750 homes is due to be underway in 2020 with the first completions expected during 2022.

The development features a new railway station, which opened on 3 June, 2019 to serve up to four million rail passengers a year.

Enfield Council, which is leading this regeneration project, has funded £40m of the £46m cost of the new station. The Council believes the new station underpins the whole development and is now pressing ahead to deliver new homes.

The first phase of homes are next to Meridian Water train station and will be complemented by new public squares, shops and leisure facilities. Phase 2 of the development will have 100 per cent affordable housing.

Enfield Council Leader, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said:
“Meridian Water will be a transformational development providing 10,000 homes and 6,000 jobs in a fantastic waterfront setting.
“We’re committed to making Meridian Water a place where people are proud to live and happy to raise families. That means taking an enormous amount of care in getting every aspect of the development right - down to the tiniest details and that includes a sharp focus on both making the entire development safe but also ensuring individual properties are as well so that residents feel safe, contented and secure in their new homes.”
More than one million new homes have been built around the UK to SBD crime prevention standards over the last 20 years.

Lyn Poole, SBD Development Officer, whose remit includes Greater London and the South East, said:
“This is one of many large residential developments around London that will offer homes that are safe and secure. We are delighted that the Metropolitan Police is investing in officers who are specially trained in crime prevention and designing out crime to ensure that developments that are being designed and constructed today will provide safe and secure homes long into the future.”
SBD is a police initiative that improves the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings to provide safe places to live, work, shop and visit - find out more at www.securedbydesign.com .

Allegion launch new ISONAS Pure IP access control to UK market

Allegion UK, a leading specialist in fire safety and security products, has launched the ISONAS Pure IP family of access control solutions in the UK.

ISONAS believes access control belongs on the network and should have the ability to be managed from anywhere across an unlimited number of facilities, that is why ISONAS created Pure IP Access Control Hardware.

Patented reader controllers eliminate the need for cumbersome control panels at every door, removing complex wiring and power supplies – meaning it is simple to install. By utilising standard category cabling installation time is significantly reduced making it the ideal choice for integrators.

Commenting on the launch, Trevor Ball, business development manager at Allegion UK and Ireland said:
“Since Allegion’s acquisition of ISONAS in 2018, ISONAS is generating a huge amount of interest in the UK market.
“Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of ISONAS is the ability to manage and administer devices across the globe. The ability to program the system centrally and manage many different remote sites is an intrinsic benefit. This singular advantage is one of the reasons why many customers are choosing to invest in ISONAS Pure IP access control.
“With the flexibility, scalability and accessibility of ISONAS, I’m certain that this is the future of access control.”

Built in Bluetooth Low Energy enables the door to be configured directly from smartphones and tablets. This permits them to be installed, managed and monitored remotely from one single device.

Pure IP hardware also eliminates the need for a physical card, allowing organizations to efficiently manage an unlimited number of credentials and manage access control in real-time.

ISONAS’s innovative access control solutions allow businesses to use their existing security network to bring intelligent decision-making to the forefront and to embrace an open platform with both an API for 3rd party software integrations and an SDK for integration of our patented Pure IP hardware.

ISONAS Pure IP access control is not technology of the future. It is a technology of today and here to stay making it a logical choice for businesses that want full control over their security and a proven IP solution at their door.

Full details of the ISONAS Pure IP access control solutions can be found at: www.isonas.com
