Celebrating 70: Jaguar C-Type Joins Classic Continuation Family

Jaguar Classic is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the legendary C-type sports racer by creating a strictly limited production run of new C-type Continuation cars, which will be hand built at Jaguar’s world-class Classic Works facility in Coventry.

The C-type Continuation programme will allow historic motor racing enthusiasts to purchase a new factory-built example of the ultimate 1953 disc-braked ‘works’ C-type direct from Jaguar for the first time.

The C-type, which was originally made between 1951-53, was famed for its exceptionally fluid shape by Jaguar Cars designer, aerodynamicist and artist Malcolm Sayer. The C-type won the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours on its debut in 1951, scoring the first of Jaguar’s seven outright wins at the French endurance race.

From 1952, the C-type pioneered the adoption of innovative disc brake technology in motorsport, with a revolutionary system developed by Jaguar and Dunlop scoring the first win for a disc-braked car with Stirling Moss at the Reims Grand Prix in France and contesting the 1000-mile Mille Miglia in Italy.

The C-type won the Le Mans 24 Hours again in 1953, another first for disc brakes, and also enjoyed success in the hands of private owners, which contributed to Jaguar finishing vice-champion in the inaugural World Sportscar Championship.

Dan Pink, Director, Jaguar Classic, said:
“Driven by some of the most-admired racing drivers in history, the C-type laid the foundations for Jaguar’s success in endurance racing and is synonymous with design and engineering innovation. Seventy years on, Jaguar Classic is proud to be able to utilise the latest innovations in manufacturing technology – alongside traditional skills and unrivalled expertise – to reintroduce this legendary car for a new generation of enthusiasts to enjoy.”

Of the 53 Jaguar C-types built in the 1950s, 43 were sold to private owners, but the production C-type specification was limited to drum-braked cars with twin SU carburettors and 200bhp, in the style of the 1951 works cars.

Eight new C-type Continuation cars will be built ahead of a racing-inspired celebration event for their owners in 2022. Each example will reflect the 1953 Le Mans-winning works team car specification, including 3.4-litre straight-six engine with triple Weber 40DCO3 carburettors for 220bhp and disc brakes.

Building on the experience gained with previous Jaguar Classic Continuation programmes for Lightweight E-type, XKSS and D-type, Jaguar Classic engineers have consulted Jaguar’s archives and cross-referenced scan data taken from an original C-type in conjunction with the latest computer aided design technology to create the most authentic new C-type possible.

Exclusive access to original engineering drawings and company records created by the original C-type development team – including Malcolm Sayer, competitions manager Lofty England, and engineers William Heynes, Bob Knight and Norman Dewis – ensure the authentic 1953 specifications are accurately maintained.

Taking that engineering CAD data a stage further, for the first time ever Jaguar Classic is also able to give customers the opportunity to visualise their C-type Continuation virtually using a specially designed online configurator.

This new tool at classicvisualiser.jaguar.com allows users to compare colour and trim options from the 12 authentic exterior colours and eight interior colours available, and apply optional racing roundels, steering wheel badge and bonnet badging.

Additional options available to C-type Continuation customers include an FIA-approved Harness Retention System or rollover protection. Not just for show, these authentic new C-types will be eligible for historic racing, track and closed-road use.

Going Further than Document Q Compliance

The importance of products being Document Q approved is now widely understood by architects, developers, installers, and increasingly, homeowners.

Following the introduction of these standards in October 2015, which apply to all new residential buildings (including those that have been converted to residential use), manufacturers have been quick to ensure that their products comply with these standards.

With anyone that is installing a door or window in a new residential property now being required to ensure the product is Document Q approved, most in the industry would agree that compliance at this level is now the minimum standard for door or window hardware, even if not used in new residential builds.

Whenever there’s a ‘minimum standard’ in place, manufacturers like us at Allegion will regularly strive to improve on this. It makes sense for manufacturers to do this commercially and fits firmly in with Allegion’s focus on continual improvements and core value to ‘Have a Passion for Excellence’.

An example of this in practice is PAS 24. This standard covers a wide variety of doorsets including aluminum sliding and bi-folding timber and requires them to go through various types of attack on the door, frame and locks as well as an enhanced security performance test to meet door assembly requirements.

The test itself replicates a burglar trying to attack the doorset or manipulate the locking cylinder. To comply with Document Q, PAS24:2012 is sufficient for a product to be approved. However, at Allegion, we are always looking to go one step further.

For instance, as part of a door system, our Brio Weatherfold 4s top hung exterior folding system and Weatherfold 5c rolling bottom system have both achieved the most recent PAS24 standard, PAS24:2016 – exceeding not just what is required, but what we think is needed to offer our customers the most secure products available.

Recognized as the architectural standard in exterior folding door hardware, the Brio Weatherfold series is tried and tested, having been manufactured and installed at thousands of sites around the world, and is now even more secure to give specifiers and end users absolute peace of mind.

For more details on Brio Weatherfold 4s and 5c, visit website: briouk.com.

Security business launches backed by four Secured by Design member companies

Four Secured by Design (SBD) member companies are supporting a security business launched this month (January) by a security expert who has advised at the highest levels including the Royal Household, British Security Services and the Cabinet Office.

London-based ATAJ Secure Limited is the brainchild of Tom A Jenkins, Principal Consultant and Director, whose security credentials also include being a speaker and trainer for the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) and the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO). In addition, Tom, has provided training to the Military Police and the Civil Nuclear Constabulary.

SBD member company ATAJ Secure is seeking to provide security solutions including project management, consultancy and physical security specification from concept and design through to installation and completion – even if the project has started already. The business is aimed at Government, public sector bodies and major corporate organisations.

Tom has established a partnership network with ten leading security product manufacturers around the UK, which together, provide a wide range of security products from high security doors, windows and locks that help protect households and businesses through to physical security barriers to deter organised criminals and marauding terrorist attacks.

Four of these manufacturers are established SBD member companies – Martec Engineering, Sunray Engineering, Selectaglaze Ltd and Tindall Engineering, which integrates MICO High Security Locking Solutions within its products.

Martec Engineering Group

Founded in 1985, Martec Engineering is a highly innovative company providing design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of bespoke steel windows, security doors, and fire rated steel products.

The company has long established trading relationships with many of the UK’s major main contractors and local authorities.

Sunray Engineering Ltd

Sunray Engineering is a fully ISO and LPCB certified company that designs, manufactures, supplies and installs steel commercial doors, fire doors, security doors, industrial doors and steel louvre systems.

The company has been helping to protect the critical national infrastructure together with commercial and industrial premises throughout the UK for more than 40 years.

Selectaglaze

Royal Warrant Holder, Selectaglaze, founded in 1966, is a UK designer of high quality secondary glazing systems. Products are designed and fully tested to provide effective noise, thermal and draught insulation as well as enhanced security.

The security secondary glazing range offers certified protection against blast, physical or ballistic attack.

Tindall Engineering Ltd

Tindall Engineering are designers and manufacturers of high security locking systems for physical attack, blast, ballistic and fire performance applications.

The company integrates MICO High Security Locking Solutions within its products. MICO is specified on a wide range of applications from schools and nationwide retail stores requiring panic hardware through to critical national infrastructure facilities demanding high level security protection.

Tom, who used to work for ASSA ABLOY Group – an SBD member company – and Bramah Security, has a long association with SBD by providing training for the UK’s network of Designing Out Crime Officers, who are based in police stations around the UK, and work with architects, developers and local authority planners to include SBD crime prevention standards and principles into new developments.

Tom explained: “By providing a single channel to ten manufacturers we are offering a vast shared knowledge of product specification, British and European standards and effective multiple security solutions to keep buildings safe without them having to look like fortresses.
“This eliminates conflict and confusion in specification and provides clarity on the interface between physical security products and electronic products and standards.”

Tom added: “It’s about providing physical security layers that mitigate against fire and theft, serious organised crime and acts of terrorism.”

ATAJ’s accreditations and memberships include LPCB-LPS 1175 listings with BRE’s Loss Prevention Certification Board, The City of London Crime Prevention Association, the Master Locksmiths Association, The Institute of Architectural Ironmongers and SBD, the official police security initiative.

Tom is a fully qualified master locksmith and has an architectural ironmongery diploma with the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI). Tom has affiliate membership with The Association of Security Consultants and The Security Institute in progress.

National SBD Manager, Kenny McHugh, said:
“We are thrilled and delighted that ATAJ has joined Secured by Design. It’s really exciting for us that four of ATAJ’s partner manufacturing companies are long-standing members of SBD. Tom’s security credentials are exceptional and we look forward to working with him and his new business to help keep people safe and buildings secure in the years ahead.”

Mul-T-Lock kick-starts 2021 by launching new High Security Platform, MTLTM500

Security specialist Mul-T-Lock has launched the new MTLTM500 multi-patented mechanical platform, boasting next-level protection for both residential and commercial environments.

The MTL™500 is ideal for medium to large sized business customers ¬due to its compatibility with various locking products, its advanced master key capabilities and its ability to provide a variety of keying options.

The new platform is designed to replace its predecessor the MT5, but with Mul-T-Lock’s backward compatibility function, customers are able to secure their facilities with an up-to-date, high security solution, while the new master keys remain compatible with previous products.

This means locksmiths can assure customers that they can gradually upgrade their existing systems, rather than needing to replace the whole system at once – saving them precious financial resources.

Upon grant of patent, the MTL™500 is protected against unauthorised key duplication until 2039, and Mul-T-Lock customers will be supported with replacement or expansion products throughout and following the transition.

With locksmiths in mind, the MTL™500 is quick and easy to pin and assemble, and allows locksmiths to utilise past investments such as the KC5 machine for key cutting and the original MT5 pinning kit.

The MTL™500 patented system, paired with its unique magnetic card, grants the end user enhanced key copy control, since duplicate keys can only be cut on presentation of the key card and its direct use with the Mul-T-Lock KC5 key machine.

Integrating advanced security technology with heightened key control, the cylinder provides a combination of protective elements to create a double locking mechanism. Platforms are keyed-alike and master keyable to ensure access permissions can be quickly changed and to allow access to multiple doors with a single key – all for added security and convenience.

Anti-pick, anti-bump, anti-drill and fire resistant, the MTL™500 also offers a Break Secure cylinder variant, designed to snap off when attacked and leave the main portion of the cylinder fully intact and functioning.

Claire Blakemore, Managing Director at Mul-T-Lock, comments:
“As we venture into the next generation of Mul-T-Lock products, it’s important for us to carry on creating the platforms that both locksmiths and their customers can rely on.
“We know that homes and businesses can be ever-changing environments from time to time, with staff turnover, contractors needing short-term access, and different staff or tenants requiring access to only specific areas. The MTL™500 ensures complete convenience for these requirements, without compromising on security.”
To learn more about the MTL™500, or to become an approved Mul-T-Lock distributor, please call 01902 364200, email internalsales@mul-t-lock.co.uk or visit www.mul-t-lock.co.uk.

Smarter Access for the Evolving Workplace

Due to ongoing social distancing guidelines, many offices are currently standing empty or are minimally staffed. Colin Campbell, Managing Director of Codelocks, talks about what we can do to improve facilities as we prepare for the gradual return to work in a post COVID-19 world.

Codelocks has been supplying convenient and secure access solutions to businesses for thirty years. We’ve watched trends in office fit outs and facilities come and go, worked directly with customers to find the best solutions for their needs and adapted our range to meet new requirements. As we continue to look ahead, we consider the current situation and the challenges and opportunities we are likely to face.

There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on our working lives. When social distancing measures were first introduced, most office workers quickly switched to remote working. The return to work is expected to be gradual, with physical contact being kept to a minimum.

We can’t predict the longer-term effects – though it’s likely to be a game-changer for the way we work. In the meantime, while properties are standing empty, business owners, facilities managers and landlords have a chance to press the reset button and make changes and improvements to their offices.

Securing the modern workspace

If you’re looking for ways to upgrade your premises while they are lying empty, installing smarter access control is a good place to start. The landscape of the office has changed in recent years – with many featuring breakout spaces, shared meeting rooms, multi-purpose agile areas, and more. This new style of office brings new challenges for access control.

With more open areas, it is harder for businesses to keep track of who is in the office at any one time. It can also be necessary to restrict access to some rooms. The solution we provided for Porsche Centre, Preston, perfectly illustrates how our smart access solutions can provide flexible access and different levels of security when required.

Due to its showrooms and workshops containing high value cars and equipment, Porsche Centre needed a way to restrict and permit access to certain areas in line with its business hours and needs. We recommended our CL5500 smart locks, as the sophisticated NetCode technology enables staff to quickly generate and send codes for easy access.

The locks’ audit trail data can also be downloaded and viewed – allowing the Centre Principle to keep track of who enters which lock-controlled room, and at what time.

A smart lock solution is also ideal for larger office buildings and campuses. The flexibility it offers is ideal if you have a lot of people on site at different times – and even more so if staff are returning to work gradually and working staggered shifts. It can also reduce security costs and help to manage visitor, delivery driver and maintenance staff access.

Codelocks’ NetCode explained

Codelocks’ NetCode allows you to generate time-sensitive codes and grant temporary access, using either the Codelocks Application Programme Interface (API), the K3 Connect App or the online NetCode portal.

It enables you to set codes that will only work for specific date, time and duration and send them by email or SMS. Time-sensitive codes are more secure as they will not work outside the specified time slot. This makes them ideal for granting temporary access to service engineers and delivery personnel and for short or medium-term locker rental.

Convenient access and contactless solutions

As employees return to work gradually, working in shifts and on alternate days to minimise contact, they will need secure storage for devices, laptops and personal belongings. Upgrading lockers with a contactless solution provides convenient access to valuables and reduces the need for physical contact between users, and with the locker.

The upcoming KL1100 RFID, is ideal for this situation. A card operated lock, it has a stylish, slimline front plate that also acts as a locker handle, and will give your lockers a modern, contemporary look.

For forward thinking employers that seek to promote fitness and wellbeing within work premises, in the form of on-site gyms, cycle sheds, shower facilities and changing rooms, our KitLock range removes the need for the allocation and management of keys.

For anyone looking to upgrade their lockers to be keyless, the KL1000 Classic is a great solution. It uses a four-digit code rather than a key and, when operated in Public Function, allows the user to simply enter a code to secure the locker.

When it’s time to leave, the user can enter the same code again and the locker opens. The code is then automatically erased, leaving the locker free for the next person. An upgrade to the Classic is the KL1000 Classic+. This model includes a 1 to 24-hour auto-unlock function and up to 20 user codes.

Preparing for the new normal

As we return to work and embrace the ‘new normal,’ many businesses will need to look at ways to facilitate social distancing for customers as well as employees. One way to do this is to offer self-service, thereby reducing the need for personal contact.

Innovative start up Pirate Studios were ahead of the curve when they decided to offer musicians self-service access to their rehearsal studios. Codelocks Smart Locks, with code and card entry and advanced operating and programming functions, turned out to be the solution.

Codelocks fitted CL5510 Smart Locks on the front door and individual studio room doors, and KitLock by Codelocks on the storage for music equipment. These locks allow codes to be created via an online portal and issued to customers via email or SMS. This eliminated the need for staff to be onsite.

Musicians now receive personalised codes for self-service access to the rehearsal space and storage lockers. If a musician needs to access their kit, but not a rehearsal space, they are given two codes: one for the front door and one for storage. Or, for studio room hires, musicians can be given a code for the front door and one for an individual rehearsal studio door.

As well as providing a better experience for musicians, Pirate Studios have reduced overheads by eliminating the need to have staff on site 24/7.

Solutions like this could also play an important part in helping to maintain social distancing as lockdown measures are gradually eased and hospitality and retail businesses begin to re-open.

Upgrade to keyless access today

With flexibility becoming more important in the workplace, code and card locks look set to become more prevalent, providing convenient access control and reducing the need for physical contact.

If you are looking to upgrade the access control at your premises there is an ever-growing range of access control solutions to choose from – and our experts are always happy to help you find the right one.

On what is traditionally thought to be the most depressing day of the year, Blue Monday, Jaguar released the perfect antidote last week: the F-TYPE Reims Edition.

Finished in a striking French Racing Blue, it’s available only to UK customers, with just 150 units produced in either P300 or P450 RWD Coupé configurations.

The bespoke exterior shade is reserved only for the F-TYPE Reims Edition, which becomes the second Jaguar in the series, following the XE Reims Edition late in 2019. Other exterior enhancements include the standard fitment of the Exterior Black Pack, with gloss black side vents, Jaguar script and Leaper, and grille surround. A set of 20-inch five split-spoke gloss black alloy wheels are the perfect accompanying detail.

Inside, Reims Edition customers are treated to a timeless Ebony/Ebony interior combination, finished with the Interior Black Pack – gloss black door switches, door handles, instrument cluster finisher and more – and some carefully selected options. Among them buyers will find the Fixed Panoramic Roof, heated seats and the Climate Pack, to include two-zone climate control, heated steering wheel and a heated windscreen.

All of these extras are included in the F-TYPE Reims Edition price: £58,950 for the P300 and £71,450 for the P450, offering savings of up to £4,160.

The Reims Edition moniker is inspired by Jaguar’s sporting heritage, specifically the D-type’s maiden victory at the 12 Hours of Reims in 1954 which marked the start of a truly golden era in Jaguar competition history, and went on to influence all future Jaguar sports cars, from E-type to F-TYPE.

The E-type itself celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and is commemorated by another very special F-TYPE produced by Jaguar’s Special Vehicles’ Bespoke team. The limited-edition F-TYPE ‘Heritage 60 Edition’ is finished in Sherwood Green – another nostalgic colour choice – and comes with 1960’s inspired details, a bespoke interior and commemorative badging befitting the iconic E-type’s diamond anniversary.

Rawdon Glover, Jaguar Land Rover UK MD, said:
“With the F-TYPE Reims Edition we’re able to take the most advanced sports car we’ve ever produced, imbue it with a little bit of Jaguar racing heritage and deliver our customers even more value and exclusivity. For just 150 UK customers, and in the enormously important year for Jaguar’s sports car history, the F-TYPE is more enticing than ever.”

The F-TYPE ‘Reims Edition’ is available to order now, with the first customer deliveries taking place in March.

Remote Selling Only for Installers

Installers can only sell remotely during the National lockdown, Certass Trade Association has confirmed.

Certass Trade Association has been working with Government to get clarity on as many questions from members as possible regarding what is and isn’t allowed during lockdown. After confirmation that installations can still be carried out in homes, most questions from installers were about sales visits.

Jon Vanstone, Chair at Certass Trade Association, says:
“We have done our research and now have clarity on the information for installers when they are selling.
“Over the Christmas break, updates were made to the tier system with the information specifying that: ‘Door-to-door sales should not be taking place, and sales activities should be conducted remotely (such as by phone, online, or mail)’.
“It should be noted that Government’s definition of door-to-door sales includes ‘the sale of goods and services to customers at: their home, their workplace or another individual’s home,’ so this applies to organised sales visits and not just ‘door canvassing’.
“The rules of the National lockdown have built upon the tier system, and we have had confirmation that this guidance is now in place for the lockdown period.
“However, as replacement doors and windows are a bespoke product which requires a survey of the property prior to definitive quoting, surveys can still take place in the home. Strict COVID-19 Secure Procedures should be followed during surveys to protect teams and homeowners.”

Certass Trade Association members can access a complete COVID-19 Secure Procedures Guide from their members area. Where, for example, colour samples are required for the decision-making process, these must be left with consumers and returned by COVID Secure methods, with special consideration given to contamination procedures on delivery and return.

Jon adds: “We have also produced a Remote Selling Guide in partnership with Balls2 Marketing, with advice, tips and information to help with the remote selling process. This is available to download from our website.”

SeceuroShield 38 Roller Shutter Donated to Charitable Build featured on BBC’s DIY SOS

SWS UK is proud to have contributed to a charitable build which saw the transformation of a disused bus shelter into a secure storage unit for a surf school which provides surfing opportunities to disabled people across the UK.

Featured on the BBC One series DIY SOS: The Big Build in November of this year, SWS has donated a SeceuroShield 38 roller shutter which was installed by their Swansea based distributor CGS Garage Doors and will be used to secure the surf centre following completion of its life-changing renovation.

The award-winning BBC renovation show, presented by Nick Knowles and his team, take on big charitable builds to help transform the lives of deserving families and charities. In this BBC Children in Need special episode, DIY SOS came to Surfability UK, the country’s first, fully inclusive surf school located in Caswell Bay, Wales.

Supporting more than 500 people from across the UK, Surfability was set up in 2013 by Ben Clifford and offers disabled people the opportunity to ‘take to the waves’ with specialist equipment and under the leadership of his team of expert instructors.

The run-down bus shelter, which is often flooded, with no electricity, running water or ventilation underwent a series of work carried out under the generosity of the local community of trades people and companies – transforming the space into a dry, well designed wet suit and surf board storage unit.

SWS UK’s donated SceuroShield 38 aluminium shutter was installed for free, by CGS Garage Doors in early October, ensuring the stock and equipment needed for this commendable charity remain secure outside of its opening hours.

Commercial Director, Martin Fletcher says:
"CGS Garage Doors approached us and asked for support in contributing to the latest DIY SOS project taking place in their local area. When we read up on the charity and the remarkable work carried out by Ben and his team, we were only to pleased to donate a SeceuroShield 38 shutter to support this fantastic cause.
"We are proud to have worked alongside CGS Garage Doors and are confident that the shutter will provide the security and peace of mind they need to continue their impressive work at their inclusive surf school".
