A Guide to Architectural Ironmongery Finishes

With so many finishes currently available in the architectural ironmongery marketplace, how do you know which is the best one to choose? Andy Matthews, head of sales at HOPPE (UK), outlines the different finishes and the benefits of each.

For people specifying architectural ironmongery, it is always a challenge to balance safety, security and accessibility requirements with the desired design of the end-user. At HOPPE (UK), we pride ourselves in designing and manufacturing hardware that achieves both.

Refurbishment works

During refurbishment programmes, it is not always cost-effective to replace all of the architectural ironmongery. Using a physical vapour deposition (PVD) finish allows you to coordinate new hardware with existing brass handles by providing a similar finish but with the added benefit of being more low-maintenance.

PVD is scratch and corrosion resistant making it an ideal choice for buildings where the door hardware may be subject to significant use. The hardwearing properties of PVD make it a more economical choice long term as handles will not have to be replaced as frequently.

Residential

Having accessories that coordinate with the handle shows an extra level of attention to detail that can take already great door design to the next level.

The new suited range from ARRONE helps door manufacturers to easily source high-quality ironmongery in a range of finishes that complement both contemporary and traditional door designs.

The suited collection is available in black; white; anthracite grey; graphite; satin chrome effect; polished chrome effect; and polished brass effect. These seven new finishes are available across selected handles, knockers, letters and numerals.

Offices and commercial spaces

Aluminium is flexible, strong and corrosion-resistant, making it the ideal building material. However, aluminium can still tarnish and oxidise over time if it does not receive additional treatment. One of the best ways to protect and enhance its appearance is by giving it an anodised finish.

HOPPE has been using anodised finishes for its aluminium door and window hardware for more than 35 years. The hardwearing layer created in the anodising process is fully integrated with the metal substrate, increasing its abrasion resistance and helping the product to retain its appearance. These qualities are particularly useful in high-traffic areas.

HOPPE’s duranorm® range has internal door handles that offer an anodised finish. The Dubayy and Ibiza series has a contemporary handle design to match a range of interiors. Both of these handle series are available in silver colour and polished chrome.

Coastal properties

Ironmongery on properties located on the coast will be affected by marine corrosion. This doesn’t just affect the handle’s appearance; it can damage the internal workings of the handle meaning the only option is to replace it which, depending on the type of door, could be costly.

HOPPE’s Atlanta handle range with the Resista® finish has been designed to ensure it can withstand the effects of weathering. Made from one of the only metals with a strong resistance to corrosion, the new solid brass-based handles are suitable for all residential properties, even those in coastal areas. It’s also minimal maintenance as any dirt can be easily removed with just a damp cloth.

ADSA Helps Develop a Future Workforce

The third cohort at South Staffs College begins its apprenticeship journey.

The success of an apprenticeship scheme created by the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is helping to develop a future workforce for the industry.

A third cohort of Powered Pedestrian Door Technician Apprentices started South Staffordshire College in June with places for a further course in September now being booked.

Members of the initial group, which began their two-year apprenticeship in March 2021, are completing projects for end point assessments with should be fully qualified by the end of the year. A second, which started last September is concluding its first academic year with another to follow.

Says ADSA Managing Director Ken Price,
“Demand for places has been tremendous. It is good to know that the industry has embraced the opportunity to develop a future workforce utilising the apprenticeship. It provides a thorough learning opportunity, combining academic study with on-the-job experience. The automatic door sector is considered niche within the wider building products and construction industry – but it is one that requires a particular set of skills and learning to demonstrate competency and meet exacting standards.
“The nature of our business means that we have traditionally found it hard to attract new talent. Indeed, before starting on their apprenticeships, some of the candidates commented that they’d been unaware that PPD technicians ‘were a thing’
“Automatic doors, gates and entrances may be widely used within commercial and public buildings, enabling convenience and accessibility but awareness of the businesses that make, install and maintain them may not have been as prominent as it might, which has led to a skills gap within the industry. ADSA’s efforts to professionalise it through the provision of end-to-end learning and development opportunities should help attract and retain talent for the future.”
In addition to the success of the apprenticeship on mainland UK, a new apprenticeship course is being launched in Northern Ireland, through South Eastern Regional College (SERC). The college will act as the industry delivery partner for the new Automated Entrances Apprenticeship which is being funded by the Department for the Economy NI.

The college is now recruiting students for an expected 15-strong cohort which will be introduced as part of a rolling programme, beginning this September.

Qualifications include:
  • EAL Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technologies
  • EAL Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations
Modules will comprise of engineering environment awareness, electrical installation methods, wiring and circuit protection, working safely in an engineering environment and maintaining electrical equipment/systems. Modules will be tailored to meet the needs of the industry.

Level two maths and English will also be provided for apprentices that do not already hold these qualifications.

Apprentices for the SERC course will need to be working for a company based in Northern Ireland or a UK company that works predominantly in NI.

Visit www.serc.ac.uk for more information. Employers can arrange apprenticeships direct with the college by emailing: apprenticeships@serc.ac.uk

For more information about ADSA membership or services visit: www.adsa.org.uk or email: rachel@adsa.org.uk

A Bond for Life

Jack Aluminium’s JD47 system has once again showed its incredible versatility, being used for a bonded double door set at the headquarters of one of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies.

Architectural aluminium glazing specialists Rodnic were asked to provide something with an elegant aesthetic to match with the external façade, as well as being stronger and more durable than a standard frameless glass door. The slim sightlines and robustness of the JD47 made it the obvious choice for this project.

Chris Rodger, Managing Director at Rodnic said:

“The JD47 was the ideal product for this bonded door.
"We’ve been using the JD47 system for years now and it’s so robust, straightforward to manufacture and extremely versatile.
"The slim sightlines matched perfectly with the external façade of this building and the JD47 was ideal for this situation as the bonded door set was being used as an external windbreak with another set of doors inside.”

As well as the quality of the door systems, the level of service from Jack Aluminium is why Chris says he has remained a customer for so long.

“Jack Aluminium never let us down,” adds Chris.
“They have excellent lead times on powder-coated materials, and they will go the extra mile when we need something quickly or any technical questions answered. The products are perfect for the majority of projects we carry out and the testing and certification for their products gives our customers peace of mind that what we are installing is safe and secure.”

Manufacturing Firms Consider Hybrid Working as Part of their Permanent Business Model.

The latest ONS figures show that manufacturing firms were amongst the most likely to adopt hybrid working as part of their permanent business model.

The number of businesses looking to implement a long-term culture of hybrid working has increased, with 20% of manufacturing firms expressing an intention to adopt it long-term.

Whilst Cabinet Office minister, Jacob Rees-Mogg, has urged civil servants to return to the office, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that businesses in other sectors are planning to implement a long-term culture of hybrid working.

According to statistics, the number of organisations using or intending to include homeworking as part of their permanent business model increased from 16% in autumn 2020 to 23% in April 2022.

20% of manufacturing firms said they would adopt it long-term, whilst more than half (54%) of businesses in the information and communication sector expressed an intention to include it as part of their permanent business model. Meanwhile, only 3% of firms in accommodation and food service industries said they would, citing logistical complications.

Although the data suggests that improved staff wellbeing, reduced overheads and increased productivity are amongst the key motivations for this shift, employers still have a duty of care towards all employees, regardless of their work environment.

Tina Chander, Head of the Employment Law team at Wright Hassall, commented:
“Despite the removal of all Covid-related restrictions, these latest statistics show there are still a large number of businesses eager to continue a culture of hybrid working.
“Understandably, there are many employees that have grown accustomed to working from home throughout the pandemic, and are now reluctant to make a full-scale return to the office. From a business perspective, the widespread acceptance of hybrid working presents an opportunity to save money on office space, whilst enhancing employee morale.
“That being said, employers still have an obligation to ensure the health and safety of their workforce is protected, even if employees are working from home full-time.
“This includes the creation of a comprehensive hybrid working policy that contains the necessary health and safety risk assessments, allowing employers to spot potential issues early on, so that adjustments can be made before they escalate into serious safety concerns.
“Ultimately, the emergence and widespread popularity of hybrid working is designed, in part, to improve the lives of employees, so it is vital that their health and safety is also looked after.”

Black Antique Door Furniture with a Twist – New Additions to the DURATIQUE Range

Based on high demand from their customers, Coastal Group are pleased to announce two additions to the DURATIQUE range - A Ring Door Knocker & Curly Tail Door Handle.

Why DURATIQUE Hardware?

With customers experiencing difficulty finding a durable antique hardware solution, DURATIQUE was designed by Coastal to outlast the door itself! Combining beautiful traditional styling with modern performance, DURATIQUE benefits include:
  • Manufactured from Stainless Steel to prevent hardware failure
  • Designed and built in the UK to maintain the quality of product
  • Precision CNC machined fixing points allow batch productions of doors
Coastal’s DURATIQUE black antique front door furniture includes Door Handles, Centre Door Knobs, Cylinder Pulls, Escutcheon, and Letter Plates. Our two newest additions to the DURATIQUE range provide customers with even more choices to create a stunning traditional finish on your doors.

The DURATIQUE Curly Tail Door Handle is a stylish black antique door handle suitable for multipoint door locks and comes with a euro profile cut-out.

Black antique door handles have a reputation for a number of performance issues including handles drooping and rattling spindles. In fact, Coastal often hear of customers refusing to fit black antique hardware altogether as it simply lets down their door.

To avoid such issues, the Curly Tail Door Handle is manufactured using a high-quality dual sprung mechanism and spindle. This ensures the handle does not droop or rattle; it provides a positive action and returns the handle consistently to its original position.

To prove the handle’s longevity, it has been durability tested to BS EN 12217:2003 – 200,000 Cycles.

For door and window manufacturers, finding matching hardware solutions that maintain a consistent aesthetic across a property can be extremely difficult. Coastal’s Black Antique Suited Hardware Solution allows you to match door and window hardware.

This heavy-duty black antique ring door knocker made from Stainless Steel will enhance the front door of any property, especially in adding character to traditional, older style settings.

The ring door knocker features a striker plate and also comes with bolt-through security fixings and a secret fix option.

Traditional antique door furniture is made from Malleable Iron, where over time the coating flakes off and the malleable iron base material begins to corrode, causing brown rust streaks to occur within months, spoiling your new door.

Coastal make the DURATIQUE range using a Stainless Steel base material and apply a specialist topcoat to ensure the best protection against corrosion, even in coastal locations.

Is DURATIQUE Right for you?

If you’re after a low-cost iron-based antique hardware solution, DURATIQUE is not the product for you.

HOWEVER, if you’re looking for a hardware solution that will enhance the quality of your doors and windows for years to come and avoid unnecessary work later down the line through costly replacement and site callouts, look no further than DURATIQUE.

Doors are high-ticket items that involve a lot of time and effort in manufacture, Coastal create external hardware solutions that don’t let them down. Coastal believes that whilst Iron-based products are very suitable for internal use, using them for external projects can cause you a number of problems resulting in corroding or failing hardware,

DURATIQUE is manufactured using hard-wearing, corrosion-resistant Stainless Steel material. This allows the company to fulfil one of their key Company Supporting Pillars ‘Ultimate Lasting Performance’, delivering long-term value to all of their customers.

You can view the full DURATIQUE range on the website www.coastal-group.com. If you would like to know more give the Coastal team a call on 01726 871 025 or email sales@coastal-group.com.

Part L Changes likely to Prompt Surge in UKCA Testing Demand for Fabricators

Incoming changes to Part L of the Building Regulations are likely to intensify testing demand in the run up to the December 31 deadline for UKCA certification.

The warning, from Element Materials Technology – one of the UK’s leading testing and certification service providers to the construction industry – comes in advance of scheduled changes to Part L, which take effect from 15 June.

As part of a shift towards lowering domestic CO2 production through the Future Building Standard, all new doors and windows entering the market from that date must meet new mandated U-values. However, any existing products currently on the market which meet the new mandated U-values must still achieve UKCA marking in order to be sold in the UK from 1 January 2023.

The requirement is likely to affect hundreds of products manufactured outside of the UK, even if they have achieved CE marking in the country of manufacture.

UKCA marking can only be issued by an approved body listed on the UK government’s database. As there are only a small number of approved bodies, manufacturers who have not yet started or completed the process could find themselves under pressure to secure laboratory space with just six months left until the UKCA marking requirements come into force.

Chris Bryan, Senior Test Engineer at Element Materials Technology – Wednesbury, comments:
“On the surface, the changes to minimum U-values set out in the updates to Part L are straightforward. Indeed, a sizeable majority of products currently in circulation are already compliant.
“The real issue is that any product that has been CE-marked in another country – even if it meets the U-value requirements set out in the changes to Part L – will need to be re-tested in the UK to achieve UKCA marking to continue being sold here from the start of next year.”
Chris continues: “The realisation is really starting to take effect amongst the international fabrication community. We have already seen a surge in demand in recent weeks and only expect that to increase as we get closer to the UKCA deadline. I would strongly urge any fabricators who either manufacture overseas or are looking to meet the new requirements to book UKCA testing now to ensure a smooth transition.

Norton Motorcycles Announce Plan to Build Electric Motorcycles in the UK

Norton Motorcycles has announced its intention to begin developing electric motorcycles in the UK after winning significant investment through a government scheme.

The iconic British motorcycle brand has been awarded funding by Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) 19, an initiative which aims to assist businesses in the automotive sector in advancing their low-carbon offering while helping to accelerate the UK towards a net-zero automotive future, a future that Norton fully embraces.

As demand for electric motorcycles and micro-mobility solutions grow, the project, Zero Emission Norton, will expand Norton’s ever-growing electric vehicle engineering capabilities and develop world class electric motorcycles.

Guided by a design-led philosophy and a relentless commitment to perfection, the electric products will still look unmistakably Norton. The team will refine the traditional Norton design DNA, but with modern twists introducing industry leading innovations and digital solutions.

Electric products to date offer either range or performance, as the weight and size of the battery compromise vehicle design. However, using the extensive engineering and design experience within the Norton team, this project looks to eliminate that compromise while simultaneously delivering race performance and touring range.

To deliver this ambitious project, Norton will work with specialist project partners who have the same vision for innovation in the production of world-class electric motorcycles. The team encompasses Delta Cosworth, HiSpeed Ltd., Formaplex Technologies, M&I Materials, INDRA and academic partner WMG, University of Warwick.

Robert Hentschel, CEO Norton Motorcycles

Norton will work alongside these partners to develop world-class technology and products that will enhance the UK supply chain for all the critical components in electric vehicle (EV) technology including batteries, motors, chassis, cooling oils and vehicle to home chargers.

As a result, the 30-month project is expected to create a significant number of jobs in the UK in manufacturing and R&D as well as upskilling existing staff to be capable of electric motorcycle engineering. This in turn will help address the UK skills shortfall in that space while helping the UK return to the position it last enjoyed in the 60’s, as the global technology leader for motorcycles.

Robert Hentschel, CEO Norton Motorcycles said:
“This significant funding investment is a momentous milestone for the brand as it marks the beginning of our electrification journey and fulfilling our ten-year product plan. Norton is an exemplar of modern luxury and unafraid to challenge the status quo, innovating for the future of mobility while staying true to our British heritage. It also brings into focus our desire to support the UK in its mission for a net-zero automotive future.”
“Working alongside our world class partners, we’re confident that project Zero Emission Norton will eliminate the current dispute between a conventional and electric motorcycle to create EV products that riders desire – motorcycles that blends Norton’s uncompromising design DNA with racing performance, touring range and lightweight handling.”
Each partner on the project will have a specialist part to play in project Zero Emission Norton. Delta Cosworth will design the battery pack, while HiSpeed Ltd. bring motor and inverter design and manufacturing skills.

Formaplex Technologies has expertise in precision composites manufacturing and M&I Materials will support on applications of dielectric cooling with its MIVOLT fluids. Indra Renewable Technologies specialises in revolutionary vehicle to home charging technology, and WMG, University of Warwick, major on battery technology, modelling and toolchain development.

About Norton Motorcycles

Norton Motorcycles was founded in 1898 as a manufacturer of fittings and parts to the two-wheel trade.

Norton Motorcycles went on to become one of the most iconic British motorcycle brands, manufacturing famous models such as the 650SS, Atlas, Commando, Dominator, Manx, Navigator and more – constantly innovating in motorcycle technology, with features advantageous for lightness and strength in motorcycle racing. Norton Motorcycles has an unrivalled history in motorsport and the brand name is synonymous with Isle of Man TT racing.

In April 2020, Norton Motorcycles was acquired by TVS Motor Company, India’s third-largest motorcycle manufacturer. Under the leadership of TVS, Norton is based out of a new manufacturing facility in Solihull, West Midlands, building British bikes in England using traditional hand-crafted techniques with modern day machinery for consistently high quality.
