Zoo Hardware highlights the importance of compliance this Fire Door Safety Week

This Fire Door Safety Week, Zoo Hardware, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of door hardware, is reinforcing the importance of fire door compliance and the vital role certified hardware plays in protecting property, and most importantly, lives.

Running from Monday 23rd September to Friday 27th September 2024, the awareness week highlights the critical function of fire doors in safeguarding buildings.

With this, in order to help professionals within the architecture and specification industry to always ensure complete fire door compliance, Zoo Hardware offers expertly designed Commercial and Architectural Fire Door Packs.

Zoo Hardware’s Fire Door Packs include all door hardware needed to comply with fire door regulations, including Grade 13 Ball Bearing Hinges, door closers, locks, and signage.

All components within the pack are CE-marked, having been third-party tested to BS EN 12209:2016, the European standard for testing mechanically operated locks within doors and fire doors.

Thus, they are guaranteed to meet stringent requirements for safety, strength, durability, functionality and security.

Importantly, the packs come with independent certification, offering specifiers peace of mind that all products have been rigorously tested and are suitable for fire-rated door assemblies, ensuring the integrity of the fire door.

Designed for both 30 and 60-minute fire-rated doors, the packs are supplied with all the hardware necessary to meet CERTIFIRE standards.

CERTIFIRE is an independent third-party certification that assures the quality, performance and reliability of fire protection products, ensuring tested items meet rigorous fire safety standards.

This allows specifiers to guarantee that their fire door systems are properly equipped, and compliant with the latest regulations.

Jason Tonks, Reg AI Technical Product Certification & Compliance Manager at Zoo Hardware, said:

“Architectural ironmongery is a crucial element of any fire door assembly.

“Ensuring that each component is certified and compatible is vital in maintaining fire door compliance and helps to both protect property damage and save lives in the event of a fire.

“During Fire Door Safety Week and beyond, we want to help the architecture and specification industries to understand that achieving compliance does not have to be complex.

“Our Fire Door Packs make it easy for professionals to meet regulatory standards, while offering quality and assurance.”

As a leading supplier of door hardware, Zoo Hardware offers tailored solutions to meet specific project needs, including bespoke kits and multi-finish options like black, brass, and bronze.

Hörmann RollMatic T Roadshows Head South

Following the success of their first two RollMatic T roadshows, held in Glasgow and Bradford in June, Hörmann is now heading south, providing dealers and installers with the opportunity to find out more about the most fitter-friendly roller door on the market.

Two events are planned for October. The first one will take place in Stratford on Avon on the 1st, followed by Reading on the 3rd.

Dealers and installers will be able to experience live installations, which illustrate just how quick and easy it is to install the RollMatic T roller door, and they will have the opportunity to talk to the Hörmann experts.

There will also be the chance to enter a prize draw to win a trip to Germany later in the year to visit the RollMatic factory in Amshausen and the Christmas market in Bielefeld. Another reason for dealers to attend is that Hörmann will be giving all attending companies a free DuraBelt upgrade on the next three RollMatic T doors ordered.

RollMatic T is packed full of features and benefits, representing the standard to which all roller doors should be compared. Constructed from robust 77mm lath, it is available with either internal or external roller options.

To speed installation, the door is supplied in two sturdy and easily transportable boxes containing all the components needed to install and operate the door, with pre-assembled and pre-drilled components reducing preparation time onsite.

Hörmann has also recently announced that RollMatic T will be supplied with Hörmann DuraBelt technology as an option, which helps reduce the risk of marking or scratching during its operation due to grit or other foreign objects.

The door is supplied with a wired opto-sensor in the bottom seal, which comes as standard. This sensor stops the door if there is an unexpected obstacle and operates to DIN EN 13241.

Alternatively, a wireless version is available as an upgrade. A space-saving tubular operator and two hand transmitters operating on the Hörmann BiSecur radio system are supplied as standard.

For further information on Hörmann UK RollMatic T roadshows and to book your place, scan the QR code or call 01530 516868

Making The Most of All Seasons

David Knollman of Brio UK discusses how versatile sliding and folding door systems allow homeowners to take advantage of each season.

If there’s one thing we’re known for in Britain, it’s our temperamental weather (and how we love to complain about it). Between the fleeting summers, blustering winds and bitter winters, our seasons can be wildly unpredictable - making it difficult for homeowners to stay prepared and enjoy their living spaces.

Each year, as the months pass by, homes can struggle to acclimatise to a varied spectrum of weather conditions and temperatures, leading many to believe they’re unable to experience the best that combined indoor and outdoor living can offer. Yet, modern sliding and folding door systems may often hold the answers by combining aesthetic space-saving features with practical versatility.

In fact, sliding and folding door applications can completely transform contemporary homes by reinventing the barriers between indoor and outdoor living. Offering unique flexibility to projects, sliding and bi-fold doors provide households with a host of benefits all year round, from aesthetic summer views to energy cost savings in winter. So, how can homeowners reap the rewards whilst complementing their living space?

Aesthetically pragmatic

Sliding and folding door features are naturally aesthetic by design and are frequently used to enhance the style of entire home layouts. Where internal doors create open-plan spaces and enhance movement from room to room, external doors act as a home’s gateway to the great outdoors.

When days are brighter and warmer in spring and summer, sliding and folding patio doors will flood a home with natural light, and when opened, they can offer a better connection to garden areas. Often, in high-end applications, large sliding panels are utilised with specialist hardware and profiles, ensuring the glazed part of the door consists of minimal framing for superior uninterrupted views. Folding doors, however, allow for a virtually clear opening with smaller panels and more vertical frames.

Both types of doorsets extend living spaces and allow for more light to be passed through to the interior rooms of a house, reducing the need for artificial light during the day, when compared with traditional hinged doors that are typically bulkier in design and can’t open as wide.

With that in mind, the distinctive design of sliding and folding door systems is especially useful when guests visit, and increased traffic flow is expected in multiple areas of the home - such as summer barbecues and other large open-plan gatherings. In these settings, occupants are presented with a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors and a versatile functional area for entertaining that can be enjoyed as a result of the saved space.

With only 4% of adults believing the UK is well prepared for hotter summers, the use of sliding and folding doors should not be overlooked as a source of much-needed ventilation when facing extreme summer conditions. The naturally wide openings associated with these modern door designs can help to circulate fresh air through a property when temperatures begin to rise, offering enhanced ventilation and supporting a controlled climate when the sun is at its highest.

Efficient temperature performance

Eventually—and predictably—the weather will turn worse. When the signs of autumn and winter reappear, it’s important for a home’s chosen door system to possess quality panels and closing mechanisms. This will give users peace of mind that when exterior doors are closed, the weather is locked out, too.

As much as sliding and folding door systems can help regulate temperature in the warm summer months, the right application can make a difference when the cold strikes. Sliding and bi-fold doors are renowned for thermal performance - with timber frames generally recognised as more efficient than their aluminium counterparts - and can help to retain the heat inside a home whilst keeping the cold air out.

Rebated folding systems, for example, are often applied with brush strips and seals, creating thermally sealed systems that keep draughts away. Energy-efficient glazing can also prevent energy loss and keep energy costs down. In addition, internal partitions assist in temperature control during the winter, with homeowners able to effortlessly close off open plan areas when not in use.

Modern timber doorsets also offer strong sound absorption, with external doors able to shield inside spaces from outside noise, such as heavy traffic and high winds. Furthermore, where regular doors can be susceptible to slamming in windy conditions, reliable folding and sliding soft close door systems offer greater stability in their closing methods, assuring fingers won’t become trapped as a result of sudden gusts, as well as reducing maintenance and extending the life of the doors.

For homes located near the coast or an area experiencing high levels of rain, it’s also important to consider the finish of external door applications. PVD coatings or marine grade stainless steel door hardware, for example, offer enhanced durability in these settings to effectively guard against the elements such as salt spray and sea air - allowing homeowners to enjoy lasting use of their sliding and folding door systems, and all whilst embracing the cycle of Britain’s seasonal weather.

The Hunt for "Coal Scuttle" - The First Aston Martin

The search is on for a priceless piece of British luxury car brand Aston Martin’s earliest history. A1 was the very first car to be built by Bamford & Martin Ltd, the company that would quickly become Aston Martin.

Nicknamed ‘Coal Scuttle’ because of its simple styling that was, to many, redolent of the ubiquitous fuel container that almost every home in the nation would have had a century ago, the car was created in the summer of 1914 and, over the course of the next ten years, helped the company’s founders publicise their business.

However, in 1924, Aston Martin sold its earliest model for the princely sum of £50, and not long after that, the car disappeared entirely. Now, 110 years after its manufacture and 100 years after its sale, the Aston Martin Heritage Trust (AMHT) is launching a global hunt for this priceless missing piece of the brand’s history.

Ahead of the Trust’s annual festival, which this year takes place at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, on Saturday, 31 August, the AMHT is asking car enthusiasts around the world to check their garages, outhouses, barns and stores for any potential traces of the missing car.

Trust Treasurer, Garry Taylor, said:
“We are very fortunate here at the AMHT to have the oldest known Aston Martin in existence, now known as A3, along with extensive records from the earliest days of the company and priceless artefacts from across the history of the brand, but, to date, ‘Coal Scuttle’ has eluded us.
“Now, as we prepare for our annual festival when hundreds of Aston Martin owners from across the world will join us for our annual celebration of the brand, we are appealing to car enthusiasts to help us find that very first car or discover definitively what became of it.”
Built in 1914 by a small team of engineers led by marque founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, this first car aspired to be a high-quality sporting car rivalling the likes of Bugatti. The First World War interrupted its development, although Lionel Martin was still able to formally register the car as an Aston Martin' on March 16, 1915.

Bamford had fought in France during the war and, having survived both the conflict and the Spanish Flu pandemic, opted to leave the business to concentrate on a quieter life with his wife and daughter. He passed on his shareholding to Kate Martin, the wife of his former business partner, Lionel.

As Bamford & Martin Ltd regrouped in 1919 it entered its lone car, ‘Coal Scuttle’, in the first available UK sporting event, the London to Edinburgh Trial. This was a true test of machinery, driving all the way on rough roads and tracks with all manner of pitfalls possible. Thankfully the car completed the event in good time, earning a Gold Medal in the process.

‘Coal Scuttle’ was constantly tested and developed throughout the early 1920s. It raced at Brooklands and was driven all over the UK, often posing for photos at its stops, including a salmon fishing trip to Loch Awe in Scotland.

The AMHT holds a significant collection of these images, and closer examination reveals that the car had more than one set of front fenders, various lamps, horns and mechanical upgrades during its busy life.

Its endeavours have been carefully researched and recorded, first by the Registers of the Aston Martin Owners’ Club and, for the last quarter of a century, by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust. Its last known entry was its sale for £50 in 1924. Then, the trail went cold. £50 was a reasonable amount of money in the mid-1920s, so it is unlikely the car was scrapped at that point, but nothing else is known about its activities afterwards.

Aston Martin company historian and AMHT Trustee Steve Waddingham takes up the story:
“I am fascinated by this car, and I have often wondered what might have happened to it. If it was eventually scrapped, did parts of it survive, such as the beautiful radiator housing? Being the first Aston Martin, the car lacked any external badges, so if the radiator was saved as a memento, is it hanging on a wall somewhere, unidentified?
“Did the well-worn open body get replaced? Was the chassis used to build a ‘special’ or some sort? The oldest known Aston Martin, prototype A3, had survived for many years hidden under homemade bodywork. So, similarly, did ‘Coal Scuttle’ live on in another form? Are the rusting remains in an orchard somewhere or hidden in a barn? Anything is possible.”
Steve adds: “In what would have been, and may still be its 110th year, we would love to know the whereabouts or fate of our very first car. We are asking enthusiasts to check their automobilia collections, outhouses, stores and, yes, even orchards! If anyone knows more about the car or has unidentified automotive remains they think could be relevant, we would dearly love to hear about it.”

Anyone who does feel they can shed more light on the whereabouts, or fate, of ‘Coal Scuttle’ is asked to contact the AMHT via its website: https://amht.org.uk/contact/ where tickets and further information about the 2024 AMHT Festival is also available: https://amht.org.uk/event/aston- martin-heritage-festival/

The AMHT, a charitable organisation formed in 1998, is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the history of this iconic luxury British sports car brand.

New textured finishes for door handles from The HOPPE Group

New textured surfaces from HOPPE offering an attractive look and interesting feel are now available for the popular Hamburg and Austin handle series.

The new finishes in Sand Brown, Sand Grey, Sand Black as well as Matt Anthracite Grey, match current trends in modern furnishing styles.

Versatile décor

The finishes add a unique feel to a door handle and will suit a variety of door styles. The choice of colours matches the trend for rich, dark tones and rust colours seen in many modern interior designs.

Sand Brown is the ideal choice to complement natural wood or earth tones and will fit with a rustic look. Sand Gray and Sand Black can provide a more classic feel and are also the perfect addition to an industrial theme.

For those who prefer to stick with a smoother feel, Matt Anthracite Grey will suit many door applications.

Stylish shapes

The Austin range of door handles features a modern, angular design with sleek lines for contemporary door styles. Meanwhile, the Hamburg range of door handles combines angular and round design elements that can suit a wide variety of applications.

Quick-Fit connection

Both the Austin and Hamburg series have the Quick-Fit connection designed by HOPPE.

Installing a door handle typically requires several steps. However, the HOPPE Quick-Fit connection allows door handles to be installed in one simple step, resulting in a 75% time savings compared with normal fittings.

The key point of the technology is the blocking mechanism in the receiver handle, which holds the solid spindle of the other handle firmly and without play. Maximum torque transmission is achieved with the whole width of the spindle.

For more information on the new textured finishes, contact HOPPE (UK) by phoning 01902 484400 or emailing info.uk@hoppe.com

Duoflex: A New Window on Commercial Building Refurbishment

There’s a quiet revolution underway that is changing the landscape of our towns and cities.

A demand for the refurbishment and reuse of commercial buildings – a surge driven by the need for smaller, flexible working spaces and alternative uses in a post-COVID era.

This poses landlords and developers with a challenge - the best way to adapt buildings to the needs of new inhabitants and different uses, while aligning original exteriors with new interior layouts.

Windows are a significant ‘tell’ which need careful consideration not only to maintain aesthetics but to ensure that they can be operated safely and effectively, especially when buildings are being subdivided for multiple occupancy.

Strand Hardware's Duoflex range of window openers are ideally suited to this changing market - offering versatile, modern hardware for high-level, or difficult to reach top hung opening out windows.

The range has variations for timber, aluminium, and PVC-u windows.

Each one boasts an adjustable bottom foot bracket, to accommodate different step configurations, avoiding the need for packers or shims, to ensure a seamless look across various window profiles.

Craig Fox, Sales Director at Strand Hardware, said:

“The beauty of our products is their modern design and unparalleled flexibility.

“Our adjustable bottom foot bracket allows for precise adjustments, making installation straightforward and efficient, regardless of the window material or profile.”

In addition to its functional excellence, the Duoflex range offers a variety of finishes to match any design aesthetic.

There are a range of standard powder coated finishes, silver, black, white and plated finishes, satin stainless steel and polished brass. Special RAL finishes are available upon request.

He added:

“We offer the largest range of finishes within the market.

“This flexibility ensures that our products can seamlessly integrate with the existing ironmongery of any building, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal,”

The Duoflex range also includes tandem bars, available in lengths from 300mm up to 2000mm allowing for tailored solutions based on window size and configuration.

An optional centre ring can be added for windows that are particularly difficult to reach.

This, coupled with a pole operator, enables effortless opening and closing of high-level windows, enhancing user convenience.

Designed and manufactured in the UK, these window openers are engineered to meet the highest standards of durability and performance - a practical choice for modern commercial spaces but also a stylish addition that complements the architectural integrity of any building.
