At 18 storeys, Mjøsa Tower in Brumunddal to take title of world’s tallest wooden building

When completed in March 2019, Mjøsa Tower in the Norwegian town of Brumunddal will be the world’s tallest wooden building.

The construction, which started in early April this year, is an example of how wood can be substituted for concrete, which is considerably heavier and less environmentally friendly. The building will stand over 80 metres tall, and its 18 storeys will house offices, a hotel and apartments.

Wooden buildings are the solution to the high demand for new housing and offices, urban densification, and stringent environmental demands. Using wood as the main building material produces lightweight and cost-effective buildings that are quick to build and have minimal environmental impact. This also applies to load-bearing elements.

Environmental concerns are perhaps key

This high-rise is being built using glulam, CLT, and Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL (laminated veneer lumber). To ensure the required load-bearing capacity, cross-bonded veneer panels called Kerto-Q LVL will be used for the flooring between the storeys. The panels are extremely strong and durable.

3D View
Wood is an environmentally friendly building material. As a raw material, it is renewable and abundantly available in the Nordic countries.

The material absorbs more carbon dioxide as the tree grows than the quantities emitted in the manufacture of this construction material.

The wood’s light weight means less transportation and lighter foundations of the kind required for concrete buildings.

Construction time slashed by half

Using wood as the main construction material, even in high-rises, is key to shortening the construction time and, consequentially, cost. Modern technology enables us to prefabricate all components in a factory with a very high degree of precision. Compared to cast-in-situ concrete, wood makes it possible for construction time to be slashed by half. In addition, it’s relatively easy to make adjustments or corrections on-site.

Roof Terrace

“The floor structures, which consist of massive beams with Kerto panels on top, are assembled in our factory, just 15 kilometres from the construction site. Obviously, that’s a huge advantage if you have something that needs to be adjusted at the factory. The work is progressing at the rate of one storey a week, which has shortened our construction time by approximately 35 to 40 per cent compared to using cast-in-situ concrete. And since the wooden components are so lightweight, we don’t need the machinery to be as heavy,” says Rune Abrahamsen, Managing Director of Moelven Limtre AS, a general subcontractor in the Mjøsa Tower project.

Using wood means greater fire safety
Fire safety is not a weak point in the wooden Mjøsa Tower. Untreated solid wood creates its own fire-resistant surface because the outermost layer chars when exposed to fire, protecting against further fire damage.

In fact, wood is a fireproof material despite the commonly held belief that it isn’t.
“Fire safety rules state that buildings must be able to withstand a full fire for at least two hours without collapsing. When you have a building made of steel and concrete, the steel melts and the building collapses,” says Erik Tveit, Project Manager at HENT AS, the general contractor for the site.

Nevertheless, concrete will be used between the floors of the Tower’s top seven storeys. Using concrete has nothing to do with the load-bearing capacity. There's a simpler explanation: the swaying that increases the higher you get in a building built of wood or concrete. The weight of the concrete in the upper storeys makes the swaying slower and not as readily perceivable.

Metsä Wood is supplying Kerto LVL to Moelven Limtre AS, which is constructing the wooden frame for the general contractor HENT.

Pass Door Systems – The Future

From their new location at the Woodside Road Industrial Estate in Ballymena, the team are very excited for the future of Pass Doors Systems.

Pass Door Systems will offer a higher quality door with more flexibility for the end user and from this new base they plan to continue to innovate and develop the range of hinged door products such as commercial emergency exit doors.

Under the new Pass Door Systems brand, the company will ensure, as done already within Garage Door Systems, that they will provide customers with a product that continues to demonstrate quality and security.

Hörmann offers the very best in energy efficiency and space-saving solutions

At the beginning of the year, the UK’s leading door manufacturer, Hörmann, launched two new additions to its range of Sectional and RollMatic garage doors. Both products not only offer homeowners new options when it comes to thermal efficiency, but also the latest in space-saving technology.

For those seeking ways to reduce heat loss, Hörmann’s LPU 67 Thermo Sectional garage doors have been designed to achieve the company’s lowest ever U-value, providing up to 50% more thermal insulation than previous models. It achieves this by using 67mm thick, polyurethane foam-filled panels and double-lip seals on all four sides. As well as its thermal benefits, this latest range comes with Hörmann's proven finger trap protection to help eliminate potential trap zones both internally and externally.

If you elect the premium version of the LPU 67 Thermo, the fitting parts, frames, tracks and connections come in a high-quality polyester powder coating.  This is finished in Grey White RAL 9002, giving the interior of your door an exclusive look. The LPU 67 Thermo is also available in a variety of finishes, colours, and glazing options.

Ideal for those wanting to make the most out of a small space, Hörmann’s RollMatic OD has been designed to utilise the very best in space-saving technology, running along a horizontal guide rail instead of rolling around a central drum. By incorporating the operator into the guide rail, this latest roller door from Hörmann is an ideal choice for individuals that have a low headroom availability and don’t want to compromise drive-through height.

Hörmann is world renowned for producing quality doors, and these latest additions are an example of just that. To speak to a Hörmann representative for more information, please contact 01530 516888 or visit www.hormann.co.uk.

Zero Thresholds Undergo Slip Testing to BS 7976-2

Zero Seal Systems Ltd is pleased to report that in recently undertaken independent laboratory Anti-Slip testing, their Modular Thresholds, 6.4mm Low Flat Thresholds and Traction Tread™ thresholds achieved a "low risk" classification to BS 7976-2.

Whilst there is no express requirement to achieve a 36 Pendulum Test Value (PTV) or greater to BS 7976-2 in the conditions of end use, it is a clear requirement of UK Law that floor surfaces must not present risks to health.

In many legal cases a "low risk" classification (36+ PTV) has been a key point of interest in determining whether a surface is safe or slippery. Test evidence in regards to the slip rating of thresholds is regularly asked for in public transport applications.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 state that floors shall be suitable for their purpose, and shall not be slippery so as to expose a person to a risk to their health and safety.

The company is pleased to report that every Zero threshold tested received a "low risk" (lowest possible) classification (36+ PTV) in dry conditions, with the majority of those thresholds tested also receiving this classification in wet conditions.

Testing covered Zero's wide range of Modular Thresholds, 6.4mm high Low Flat Thresholds and their Traction Tread™ thresholds which have various infills to aid grip.

Sales Director Mark Lockley says:
"At Zero we are committed to offering products which are continually tested and proven. This new testing means that Zero thresholds can be specified with confidence, especially in areas of public use".

Roger Daltrey CBE and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars donate to Teenage Cancer Trust

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and ‘Global dealer of the Year’ Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Sunningdale, have made a charitable donation to Teenage Cancer Trust.

The donation was made from the proceeds of the sale of Roger Daltrey CBE’s unique ‘Tommy’ car, created earlier this year as part of a series of highly-Bespoke Wraith ‘Inspired by British Music’ cars.

A cheque for £208,945 was handed over yesterday in London by Roger Daltrey CBE to Teenage Cancer Trust’s Chairman David Hoare. Daltrey is Honorary Patron of the charity, which supports young people aged 13-24 diagnosed with cancer, and the driving force behind Teenage Cancer Trust’s annual fundraising concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. He collaborated with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars designers to create two Bespoke cars to mark the musical legacy of The Who.

Roger Daltrey CBE commented,
“Seven young people are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK, and these vital funds will help Teenage Cancer Trust take a huge step towards its goal of providing specialist support to every young person with cancer in the UK. This car has become an incredible collectors’ item, and it’s gratifying to know that the proceeds of the sale will support such a worthy cause.”

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said,
“The designers and craftspeople at Rolls-Royce were truly engaged in Roger’s vision to create a car which celebrated The Who’s musical legacy in such a creative, original way. Knowing that the sale of the car would help the charity to support thousands of young people affected by cancer made it all the more worthwhile.”

Rolls-Royce revealed its series of nine remarkable Wraith ‘Inspired by British Music’ cars in March 2017, each created hand-in-hand with some of British music’s most revered rock and vocal artists. Each of the nine cars has now been sold, with all proceeds from the sales donated to charities of the artists’ choosing.

The ‘Tommy’ car

Roger Daltrey worked with Rolls-Royce to create two Bespoke vehicles to celebrate the musical legacy of The Who. The first illustrated many of the band’s most famous iconography, such as the ‘bullseye’ logo and some of The Who’s most famous lyrics. The second Wraith designed by Daltrey – the ‘Tommy’ car – was created in collaboration with Mike McInnerney, the artist responsible for the famous album artwork of The Who’s seminal 1969 album, ‘Tommy’.

McInnerney worked with Rolls-Royce’s surface finish experts to create an extraordinary expression of the rock opera’s iconic sleeve design – this truly unique car features the cover artwork of the album applied to the bonnet. Daltrey and McInnerney sought to express other elements of the album artwork throughout the car, with the ‘Lyrical Copper’ exterior paint finished with a blue coachline of a bird in flight, a reference to the album cover art.

Each of the four headrests were stitched with unique design motifs from the album artwork, while the song ‘Pinball Wizard’ inspired the embroidered design of the rear cabin leather waterfall, featuring a tone-on-tone depiction of a pinball machine with contrasting pinball and flippers. The copper door flights are engraved with lyrics from ‘Tommy Can You Hear Me?’ and ‘Listening to You / See Me’.

A truly individual piece of music memorabilia, the ‘Tommy’ car has been sold to a Rolls-Royce customer.

More information about Teenage Cancer Trust’s work can be found on its website.

Public buildings to get new door closer technology

Facilities and estate managers can cover both safety and accessibility requirements within buildings thanks to a new high efficiency door closer range from HOPPE (UK).

Designed to meet fire regulations without compromising on safety and security, the new Cam-Action range caters for power sizes 2 to 5 making it the ideal hardware solution for public buildings.

Door closers have a vital role when it comes to keeping building occupants safe in the event of a fire. The closer ensures that the door is closed fully into the frame, helping to prevent the spread of fire, smoke and other toxic gases.

The HOPPE (UK) Cam-Action range has been tested to BS EN 1634 Part 1, making it suitable for use on 30, 60 and 120 minute timber fire doors – the requirement in most public buildings. It also meets the fire safety requirements of Approved Document B.

Fire doors within public buildings can be difficult to open for some building users but the new Cam-Action closer is designed with a low opening force, enabling everyone to move around the building with ease. It also meets the accessibility recommendations of BS8300 and Approved Document M.

The surface mounted slide track puts the closer at less risk of vandalism or accidental breakage, a common problem with projecting armsets. Projecting armsets, also known as scissor arms, can become disengaged when subjected to these forms of abuse and stop the door from closing properly into the frame creating a major fire hazard.

Andy Matthews, head of sales for HOPPE (UK) said:
“Door closers play a key role in keeping buildings secure and safe but their importance is often overlooked. The new Cam-Action series caters for the majority of power sizes and is a popular choice for many buildings due to surface mounted slide track that provides a sleek, discreet finish.”

For further details on the Cam-Action Range please call HOPPE UK on 01902 484400.

Yale Door and Window Solutions locks in support for National Home Security Month

Yale is proud to be headline sponsor of National Home Security Month (NHSM) for its fifth year this October. Highlighting the importance of home security, NHSM is driving demand for security products and installation services nationwide.

In the UK, a quarter of homeowners admit to having no home security measures in place* with most turning to security reactively when something goes wrong, rather than preventing the issue beforehand. NHSM is trying to change this attitude, by pushing home security to the forefront of people’s minds at a time when statistics show domestic burglaries increase. This presents a lucrative opportunity to installers and fabricators alike to raise awareness of the subject and engage with customers.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale, commented:
“NHSM has always been a great campaign for us to get involved with as its key objectives are closely aligned with the values and messaging we at Yale promote. It also takes place during October, coinciding with the clocks going back - a pivotal point for security sales and when consumers awareness of home security peaks.

“The new ‘Child’s Play’ theme is ideal for homeowners by showcasing the simplicity of home security. What’s more, the weekly themes provide us with an ideal opportunity to promote our range of products and services from the smart security focus of our Smart Living offering to the traditional hardware that Yale is synonymous for.”

Week two is of particular significance for door and window fabricators and installers, as it looks at securing the entry points of a home and valuables within it. This provides an ideal opportunity to up-sell British Standard locking solutions, such as the Yale Conexis, Platinum 3 and 1 Star cylinder and Platinum 2 Star cylinder pull as well as all the usual high security locking mechanisms for doors and windows, and to also ensure that customers are promoting solutions that meet the most up-to-date standards.

What’s more, a number of homeowners are put off DIY home security solutions due to time constraints and being unfamiliar with new products. This presents an ideal opportunity for fabricators and installers as 40% of consumers agree that they’d prefer to use a professional to install home security solutions as opposed to trying their hand at a DIY job**.

However, opportunities are not limited to week two. More and more trade professionals are investing in smart security devices such as smart door locks and smart home alarms that can be controlled and configured at the touch of a button. As a result, week three of the campaign presents ample opportunity to promote the Smart Living range of products, providing installers with a great opportunity to capitalise on a growing marketplace.

Week four coincides with the clocks going back and onset of the darker evenings. As a result, this week explores how homeowners can protect their properties and secure their gardens and outbuildings. The final week of the campaign has a seasonal focus, centering on Halloween and Bonfire Night – statistically the worst time of year for domestic burglaries and damage. This is an opportunity to promote TS008 compliant letterplate restrictor to prevent key fishing and lock manipulation.

Fabricators, distributors and installers will be offered support to provide consumers with details on how to ensure their door and window security meets required standards and also to promote their services. NHSM supporters will also receive a range of promotional collateral that can be distributed to customers to help raise awareness of the campaign.
