Yale is on TV this Month!

October sees the launch of a brand new advertising campaign with the Yale brand hitting TV screens nationwide.

The advert, which airs throughout the month on Channel 4, Sky, and ITV, will showcase the benefits of the new Conexisâ L1 Smart Door Lock. It highlights how the Smart Living solution can add convenience to everyday lives as well as giving peace of mind that your home is secure.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale, commented:
“This is the first time in recent years that we have used TV as a platform to target UK homeowners, and we’re excited to see the Yale brand in living rooms across the country.
“As part of our research for this campaign, independent focus groups were carried out to gauge consumer opinions. One of the main findings showed that 80% of consumers would want the Conexisâ L1 professionally installed*. This provides a huge opportunity for the trade to promote their services and enter a rapidly developing connected smart home market.
“Research also found that 55% of UK homeowners like the idea of being able to control their home security through an app, with 41% of those surveyed wanting a Smart Door Lock in their home**. By showcasing the Conexisâ L1 Smart Door Lock, the new TV advertisement is aiming to capitalise on this increased awareness and demand for smart door locks, helping to drive sales for our trade partners and reinforce Yale as the security brand of choice.”

Backed by a robust online and social media campaign, this is Yale’s biggest ever media spend, helping to drive consumer demand during a key time for security sales when the nights start getting darker and burglaries increase.

Paul adds: “Yale is a globally renowned brand and the leading home security company in the UK. This recognition puts us in a strong position as homeowners instantly recognise the yellow circle and associate our products with trust and reliability. Our TV advert will serve to reinforce this positon.”

To help fabricators, distributors and installers take full advantage of this lucrative opportunity, Yale has a wide range of promotional materials available to customers. Simply contact your Yale Sales Manager or call 01902 366800 for more details.

dormakaba Delivers Door Closing Solution to CBeebies Land Hotel at Alton Towers Resort

dormakaba’s ITS96 and ITS96 EMF door closers have been specified by architectural ironmongers G Johns & Sons for the newly built CBeebies Land Hotel at the Alton Towers resort in Staffordshire.

It was crucial that the products could provide a discreet solution, that would not spoil intricate vinyl leaf designs on the bedroom doors, whilst also ensuring compliance with both access and fire regulations.

Designed by The Manser Practice and located within the Alton Towers resort, it is the first hotel designed exclusively for children and young families. Having opened in July 2017, the hotel allows its visitors to immerse themselves within a selection of children’s TV shows, with each room featuring its own individual kids zone.

Having worked previously with dormkaba, G Johns & Sons specified ITS96 door closers for all 76 of the bedroom doors. The architect initially stipulated that overhead door closers were to be installed. However, it was decided that due to the nature of the fully screen-printed doors, complete with images of CBeebies characters, that it would be important to select more discreet door closers to ensure the design was not obstructed.

Jeremy Barltrop, Director of G Johns & Sons commented:

“Having received the brief from the architect, it was clear that the impact of the ironmongery on the vinyl design should be limited as much as possible. As such, we suggested that a concealed overhead door closer would be the best option for the project. Having worked with dormakaba previously and benefiting from the team’s technical expertise, we felt that the ITS96 and ITS96 would be the ideal solution.”

The ITS96 from dormakaba uses a slender cam and roller design to allow it to be fully concealed within the door leaf. This design also provides low opening forces to ensure ease of operation and compliance with the access requirements stated in Approved Document M. In addition, the ITS96 features a cushioned stop position that protects the door leaf and frame in the event of slamming or violent use - this position can be adjusted to an opening angle between 80° and 120°.

For the cross-corridor fire doors in the bedroom hallways and the doors leading from the staircase to each floor, the ITS96 EMF was specified. Ideal for high traffic areas, the door closer was installed specifically to ensure that corridor noise would be kept to a minimum during the evening when residents are sleeping.

It works by securing doors at an open position at all times, avoiding constant and unnecessary opening and closing. In the event of an emergency, or fault in the power supply, the unit will release and close the door – acting as a standard door closer until the alarm or power is reset.

Both the ITS96 and ITS96 EMF are third party tested to BS EN1155 and CERTIFIRE Approved, thus ensuring the door closers comply with both fire and access legislation.

Relive Jaguar and Land Rover Legends with new Classic Drive Experience at Eastnor Castle

Jaguar Land Rover Classic has launched a brand new Classic Drive event at Eastnor Castle, allowing guests to experience the terrain where Land Rover honed many of its legendary all-terrain vehicles, and to get behind the wheel of some of the most beautiful Jaguars ever made.

Based at the spectacular 5000-acre Eastnor Castle estate in Herefordshire, the new Classic Drive experience will see visitors tackling Eastnor’s thick mud and challenging slopes in some of the vehicles that helped establish the Land Rover legend.

The Land Rover story began with the Series I in 1948, a spartan but unstoppable four-wheel-drive vehicle originally designed for farm and industrial use. This Classic Drive experience offers guests a rare insight into where Land Rover’s off-road DNA was developed from the early 1960s by getting them behind the wheel of an early Series I.

Such was the popularity and capability of the Series I that its design and philosophy ran right through to the Land Rover Defender, which continued in production until 2016 and its legend will continue again in the future. Before the Defender arrived, Land Rover continuously developed its ‘Series’ models.

The Series III, introduced in 1971, offered refinements on Land Rover’s go-anywhere formula. With nearly 500,000 Series IIIs sold, it was the car that really took Land Rover to the world, and Classic Drive guests will have the opportunity to experience a Series III for themselves.

In 1970, Land Rover launched the Range Rover, delivering the same off-road ability as the more rugged Series models, but with more of an emphasis on luxury and comfort. It marked the beginning of the Range Rover brand, which has since become one of the most recognisable and respected luxury off-road badges in the world.

Now going by the name Range Rover Classic, this first-generation model is available for all Jaguar Land Rover Classic Drive guests to tackle Eastnor Castle’s challenging off-road tracks.

Once guests are finished testing some of Land Rover’s most iconic vehicles on the Eastnor estate, they’ll be able to take the wheel of a select few genuine Jaguar legends. From the late ‘50s is the XK150, the last in the line of XK sports car legends of their time, which began with the XK120 in 1948.

When it came time for the XK150 to be replaced, in 1961 Jaguar delivered the legendary E-type, which was hailed as one of the most beautiful cars of its time. Visitors will have the chance to try both a Series 1 E-type and the later Series 3 E-type of the 1970s.

But Jaguar’s reputation for ‘grace, pace and space’ wasn’t just built on sports cars; it also had a number of famous saloon models, including the Mk2. Stylish, luxurious, and fun to drive, the Mk2 found fans among racing drivers, the police force and even in the television adaptation of Inspector Morse. Customers will also be treated to a drive in the Mk2 during the day.

Tim Hannig, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said:
“Jaguar and Land Rover have created some of the most beautiful and iconic British cars ever. While their DNA lives on in our modern line-up, we want people to experience where the story developed.
Equally, the Eastnor estate has played a huge part in shaping our business, so to be able to bring a selection of our legends together in such a significant location is a real privilege. It’ll be a trip back in time and an experience that only Jaguar Land Rover’s incredible heritage can offer.”

The Jaguar Land Rover Classic Drive Experience at Eastnor is available for bookings now, priced at £495 per driver. Bookings can be made by phone on 0333 733 3003 or online here: experience.jaguar.com

Promat UK puts Assured Protection at Core of Fire Door Design and Build

Fire door manufacturers seeking to eliminate the risk of inappropriate or unproven materials inadvertently creeping into their supply chain can take advantage of a range of technically advanced materials and expert passive fire protection support under one roof from Promat UK.

The company, which is one of the country’s leading manufacturers of fire, thermal and acoustic solutions for the door and window industry, is in the unique position of being able to provide fire door manufacturers with a simplified supply chain for the various fire-resistant materials they require.

In providing a ‘one stop shop’ solution, Promat UK can reduce risk for fire door manufacturers given its position to provide assurance that key structural materials supplied for the doorset’s construction are to the required standard. Importantly too, the company’s wealth of technical expertise is available to help with the design and specification of products to ensure they are integrated into the doorset in the correct way to meet the performance expectations, from FD30 right up to FD120.

Promat UK’s range includes a number of options for glazed panels, including PYROCET® and PYROSEC®, along with PROMASEAL® PL strip for intumescent seals and a non-combustible calcium silicate fire protection board, PROMATECT® H. This can be used to form the core material of fire doors as well as providing insulation strips where required in an assembly. It can also, in certain conditions, be used to provide extra insulation to enable upgrading of doors.

Cath McLean, Segment Manager at Promat UK says:
“It is important to remember that a fire doorset is considered in its entirety. Its component parts are tested as a complete system to provide the required levels of fire protection – typically FD30 (30 minutes resistance to fire) and FD60 (60 minutes resistance to fire).
“Only ‘tested’ materials must be used in the construction of a fire doorset and these must be as prescribed in the test. There really is no scope for substitution of the tested materials, because this may seriously affect the overall performance of the doorset in the event of a fire. This is a reputational - and litigation - risk that no professional doorset manufacturer would want to run, yet by sourcing the various fire protection materials from numerous suppliers this is exactly what can result.”

In additional to timber, composite, steel and aluminium doorsets, Promat UK also provides assured fire protection solutions to meet the increasing demand for glazed partitioning which incorporates framed glass fire doors. With the company’s complete glazing solution, SYSTEMGLAS®, butt jointed frameless wall constructions can be provided which incorporate SYSTEMGLAS T framed glass doors for EI30 and EI60 performance – this is consistent with the fire protection criteria for the surrounding glazed screens.

Part of international building product manufacturing group the Etex Group, Promat UK has been producing fire, thermal and acoustic protection solutions for more than 30 years. In addition to its range of products for the door and window industry, the company manufactures market leading high performance solutions which are used in numerous hi-tech, engineering and industrial sectors. These range from Formula One racing, train rolling stock and aircraft manufacture, to offshore wind turbines, the nuclear industry and white goods.

Hörmann doubles the size of its stand at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre

The UK’s leading door manufacturer, Hörmann, has announced that it has boosted its sales after doubling the size of its stand at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC) in Swindon. The latest news comes just weeks before the centre hosts its final show of the year - The Big Green Home Show.

The show, which will be held between 6th and 8th October at The NSBRC in Swindon, will give visitors the chance to get an exclusive first look at Hörmann’s latest products, as well as the opportunity to speak to Hörmann representatives for advice and guidance.

Hörmann, who launched its range of timber internal doors earlier this year, has held a stand at the centre for over ten years and believes that the NSBRC is the ideal place to showcase its wide range of domestic products, as marketing manager, David O’Mara, confirms:

“The National Self Build and Renovation Centre gives us the perfect platform to showcase our wide range of doors for both inside and outside of the home. Following the launch of our range of timber internal doors, we decided to expand the size of our stand to ensure that we give visitors to the centre the opportunity to see the quality of the new range for themselves, and gain an idea of what we have to offer in our series of domestic products.
“Since the NSBRC’s summer show in May, we have received nearly 400 strong sales leads. Having doubled the size of our stand since then and just weeks away from the centre’s final show of 2017, we are really looking forward to unveiling our new stand, plus our range of timber internal doors, to self-builders and renovators visiting this year’s Big Green Home Show.”

Harvey Fremlin, managing director at the NSBRC said:
“As one of our key exhibitors, we are delighted that Hörmann has made the decision to extend the size of its stand. With a wide range of products on the stand, visitors to our final show of the year will be among the first to see Hörmann’s extensive range of internal and external doors on display.”

The visitor centre, which is in its 10th year, attracts thousands of homeowners who are looking to undertake a self-build, renovation or home improvement project.

For more information about Hörmann’s full product range, please visit www.hormann.co.uk or to find out more about the NSBRC, visit www.nsbrc.co.uk.

dormakaba Builds on Long-Term Collaboration with UWE

dormakaba has supplied the University of the West of England with high security mechanical locking systems for its new Faculty of Business and Law building. The specification of the Kaba 20 and Kaba Quattro plus ranges for the new £55 million state-of-the-art project, continues a relationship that spans over 40 years.

Catering for over 28,000 students and 3,000 members of staff, the Bristol-based University of the West of England is one of the UK’s most desirable universities. Located on the Frenchay Campus, the new Faculty of Business and Law Building comprises two showcase law courts, a city trading room, a 300-seat lecture theatre, two Harvard lecture theatres and technology-enhanced active learning classrooms.

Having supplied Mechanical Key systems previously for the UWE site, dormakaba was the first choice when it came to a mechanical locking system for the new building. The Kaba 20 and Quattro plus Master Key systems used allow selected keys to open a number of pre-defined doors and are compatible with a variety of locks. The Faculty of Business and Law Building has had over 500 new dormakaba cylinders installed in Kaba 20 and Kaba Quattro plus ranges.

For the estates and security teams at UWE, the master key system allows quick access to all rooms to aid fast evacuation. With individuals in possession of a single master key to unlock all doors, it also ensures a lower number of keys remain in circulation. The flexibility of the system means it can also evolve with UWE - helping to futureproof the installation.

Kaba 20 and Quattro plus locking systems’ high security characteristics made them the ideal choice, suitable for heavy usage and featuring a 22mm Round Profile cylinder, the 22 pin, radially-arranged pin tumblers allow for a robust solution, which complies with a high security standard.

Quattro plus was specified as it also includes protection against bumping, picking and drilling, by incorporating additional pins within a reinforced steel cylinder core. In addition, the Quattro plus provides greater flexibility to UWE by benefitting from an interchangeable modular core system. This allows the cylinder core to be inserted into a range of locking solutions including camlocks, keyswitches and padlocks to the more traditional cylinder shapes.

dormakaba’s keys demonstrate a high level of copy protection due to the complexity of the lock cylinder. Pins within the cylinder are aligned to fit the unique permutation image of the key. As such, positions are milled onto the side and edge of the key, with protrusions added to disguise this image further.

Jenny Ford, Security Systems Officer at UWE commented:
“I have never had any doubt when it comes to the use of dormakaba systems – I would recommend the company to anyone in the education sector considering an upgrade in their security locking. I know that I can trust them to deal with any query I have or piece of advice I need.”
The introduction of the mechanical locking systems at the Faculty of Business and Law Building is testament to the collaborative and strong relationship between UWE and dormakaba. Underpinning this has been a service contract, helping to ensure the long lasting operation of all products.

With the Kaba 20 and Quattro plus taking their place alongside the ED100 and ES200 door operators already in situ within the campus buildings, UWE is an exemplar project when it comes to benefitting from dormakaba’s comprehensive portfolio, specialist knowledge, technical support and service. With the merger of Dorma and Kaba into dormakaba, UWE benefits by working with a single point of contact for all of their door and access requirements.

Tens of thousands of Alexa skills that can be accessed from Echo devices will now be available for in-car use, too.

BMW Connected skill for Alexa has been available since September 2016. This has allowed BMW Connected users in the USA, Germany and the UK to ask Alexa to check vehicle information such as the state of charge or fuel level, or control their car via Remote Services from the comfort of their home. Alexa also makes it possible to consult appointments or scheduled routes and departure times with the help of the BMW Connected mobility agenda. The availability of Alexa in the car now makes it possible to use functions enjoyed at home while out on the road as well.
“By making this step of integrating Alexa into our models from mid-2018, BMW and MINI will form a more intrinsic part of our customers’ digital lifestyles,” remarked Dieter May, Senior Vice President Digital Services and Business Models at the BMW Group.
“Voice control first featured in BMW Group cars many years ago, and we are now enhancing its functionality by adding a digital ecosystem, which will open up all sorts of new possibilities that customers can access quickly, easily and safely from their car.”

Today, 8.5 million BMW Group models worldwide are already connected. The vast number of services and infotainment features that can be controlled by voice commands in BMW models have paved the way for the forthcoming connectivity options and new digital services. A smartphone is not required to benefit from Alexa in the car, as all BMW models and selected MINI vehicles come equipped with a built-in SIM card. The resultant provision of online accessibility anywhere, anytime allows the seamless integration of Alexa.

For example, customers can find out which movies are currently showing at the local cinema, listen to their favourite playlist or find out the weather at their destination by voice command while on the move. And if the driver realises mid- way through a journey that they have forgotten something, they can ask Alexa to place an online order. Alexa can also show relevant content for certain skills (visual feedback) in the BMW Display Screen or MINI Centre Instrument.

“We are excited to work with BMW to bring the Alexa experience to their drivers,” said Ned Curic, Vice President, Alexa Automotive. “Using your voice to enjoy content and interact with Alexa makes a great driving experience even better. We can’t wait for BMW customers to try this out.”

Intelligent connectivity between the vehicle and the user’s digital touchpoints is therefore moving into a new dimension at both BMW and MINI. Since the launch of the MINI Countryman – and the new MINI Connected alongside it – the connectivity capabilities of the British premium brand have been constantly enhanced.

From mid-2018 Amazon Alexa will be available in all BMW and MINI vehicles in UK, USA and Germany.
