Van drivers losing business due to email addresses

Hard working tradesmen are being warned they could be missing out on valuable business by using a generic email address such as Hotmail or Gmail on their vans.

Thousands of small British business are still using generic web based email accounts on their liveried vans because they fail to understand how easy it is to set up a web domain.

Now van leasing giant LeaseVan.co.uk has warned drivers they could be missing out on lucrative business deals because their Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail email addresses could be putting potential customers off.

They warned that the use of such email addresses on the sides and backs of vans can create a perception that the tradesman isn’t a serious business person. At worst, it could give the impression of a rogue trader or a fly-by-night who might not be around until the end of the job.

The issue can be solved very easily by registering a web domain for a few pounds. It isn’t even necessary to build a website and the new email address can be easily set up to forward to an existing mailbox.

Tim Alcock from LeaseVan.co.uk said many van drivers were unaware just how easy it can be to register their own web domain. He also said many wrongly believed there were huge costs involved in buying a domain when the truth is an email address can be bought for pennies.

He said: “No one needs to be driving around with a generic email address on their van in 2017. Yet many tradesmen wrongly believe setting up their own domain is costly and time consuming.
“We want to bust that myth once and for all because the reality is it costs a few quid and they could be missing out on scores of jobs every month because some punters are put off by a Hotmail or Gmail address.
“If they convert one single extra job the web domain has paid for itself. It’s a no brainer - why on earth wouldn’t you?
“It’s frustrating that someone should work so hard to set up their own business, make a really smart move by leasing a van to save on costs, and then lose out on something that’s so easy and cheap to set up.”

A recent survey found that 78% of people trusted company-branded emails more than free email addresses and two thirds, 67%, also said they were more likely to remember a company branded email.

One homeowner recently told LeaseVan.co.uk of her experience of a tradesman with a personal email address.
She said: “We needed to find a gardener, and came across someone with a Hotmail address that referenced a children’s TV character. I was really put off, as it looked like he wasn’t taking the business seriously.
“For some reason my husband insisted on trying him, against my wishes. He didn’t actually show-up for the first appointment and was almost impossible to contact afterwards.
“We are definitely not going to try any more tradespeople with silly email addresses. If they think their business isn’t important enough to set up a professional email domain, why should we use them?”
Tim Alcock from LeaseVan.co.uk added:
“Suppose you’re looking for a plumber. You’re comparing different people and you come across someone with the email address paultheplumber12345 at hotmail.com.  Are you going to use him or are you going to call the competitor with his own professional sounding domain?”
While paying a web developer to build a website can costs anything from a few hundred to several thousand, businesses can obtain official addresses with domain registration companies for an annual cost of just a few pounds.

It is also simple to set up a forwarding system, so that messages sent to the official address still go to a personal account for checking.

Email addresses should ideally match a business’s website domain name. Domain registration companies can provide both.

Tim concluded by saying: “It’s hard enough setting up in business – we don’t want our tradesmen to lose custom over an email address. Take a few minutes and set up something professional.”

Secure a copy of the new GAI CPD seminar

A new CPD looking at security hardware has been launched for door and window hardware suppliers, architectural ironmongers and locksmiths.

As the evenings grow darker and security comes to the forefront of people’s minds, the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) has released the new RIBA approved seminar for delivery exclusively by GAI members across the country.

Architectural ironmongers play a crucial role in the supply chain, working with architects, interior designers, contractors and others to schedule and specify the hardware for every door and window in a building and to produce a full fixing schedule of hardware items.

The seminar, titled Security and Ironmongery, looks at both mechanical and electrical locking devices as well as security standards for doorsets and windows. It also covers key industry standards as well as Approved Document Q and the Secured by Design initiative.

It is the latest CPD seminar available to members, adding to the GAI’s existing CPD portfolio covering topics such as ironmongery for fire and escape doors and access control.

As the training is RIBA approved, architects will be able to receive double learning points for attending a presentation of this CPD.

For further information, contact Douglas Masterson on technical@gai.org.uk.

FD30 and FD60 Fire and Security Door set Solutions

Winkhaus helps door set suppliers to comply with BOTH Security and Fire regulations

Hardware specialist Winkhaus illustrate how their Fire and Security door set - test evidence solution achieved using a combination of  their AV2 or AV3 auto locking system with industry leading  composite or timber veneered door leaf, will help fabricators meet both the changes introduced by the Approved Document Q (Security), and the EN1634 – 30 or 60 minute fire and smoke resistance performance requirements.

Winkhaus have invested extensively in fire and security test evidence to achieve“Q Mark Fire” and “Q Mark Security” certification scheme compliance.  This evidence in line with latest SBD and DCLG guidelines can be made available to the door set supplier.

The Part Q Security requirements of the UK building regulations add considerable pressure on a manufacturing business.

The changes will require all doors supplied to projects that require planning permission to have achieved the PAS24 security standard, or comply with a number of other requirements aimed at improving security levels.

CE marking regulations for fire door sets have also been introduced, (co-existence period until September 2019). The regulation stipulates that all fire doors should comply with the EN 1634 fire and smoke test requirement, as opposed to the original  BS compliance.

CE marking also requires that doors are manufactured within an independently audited factory production control or “certification scheme”.  As CE marking falls into the responsibility of those placing the product on the market, fabricators could be faced with a long period of costly testing.

The Winkhaus  Fire and Security door set - test evidence solution will considerably reduce  both the fabricator’s costs and time spent to achieve compliance.

To satisfy different market demands Winkhaus have test evidence with two different outer frame materials.
Winkhaus have introduced FireFrame ®, a low maintenance, fully finished frame system (No painting required) or traditional timber frame solutions both of which have been designed for FD30 and FD60 fire compliance and PAS 024 compliance.

Both FireFrame® and timber frame options have been tested with the Winkhaus range of AV2 and AV3 auto locking systems. Further options include FD30 and FD60 composite door leafs and 44mm or 54mm internal or external grade timber veneered door leafs. Single leaf door assemblies with side or fan light glazing, and double door assemblies with door leafs up to 2800mm high.

The Winkhaus fire and security door set solutions using the Winkhaus AV2 or AV3 range of multipoint auto-locks are available as an off the shelf fully tested solution for both fabricator’s and specifiers to choose an easy route to assured compliance.

For more information, contact Winkhaus on 01536 316091 or email marketing@winkhaus.co.uk .

Abloy UK Secures Spire Manchester Hospital

Security expert Abloy UK has supplied Spire Manchester Hospital with PROTEC2 CLIQ® and Traka 21 advanced key management systems to improve the security of medicines and increase nursing efficiency.

Spire Manchester Hospital is part of Spire Healthcare, a leading independent hospital group, offering in-patient and out-patient procedures in a wide range of areas. The company recently invested £70m to build this brand-new flagship hospital in Didsbury, Manchester.

For many healthcare institutions, nursing efficiency and medicine management can be a major cause of concern, with drugs needing to be secured effectively whilst giving nurses quick and convenient access.

Nursing efficiency is detrimentally affected by poor management of keys, and teams using older mechanical systems frequently have problems locating keys to gain access to controlled drugs – wasting nursing time and affecting patient care.

Taking a progressive approach to this process, Spire Manchester Hospital specified a combination of PROTEC2 CLIQ keys and cylinders which were easily retrofitted to a range of Bristol Maid drug cabinets throughout the hospital, including theatres, out-patients and several wards. Staff CLIQ keys were housed in Traka 21 key cabinets fitted across the wards.

PROTEC2 CLIQ is an easy-to-use access control system based on mechanical high security disc cylinders combined with highly encrypted electronic locking and identification.

Power to the lock is provided by the CLIQ key, therefore no batteries or wires are required to either the lock or drug cabinet, making it an ideal retrofit solution - even for applications such as mobile drug trolleys.

The system allows for remote key management, providing comprehensive audit trails on locks and padlocks, and the ability to remove lost or stolen keys from the system, substantially increasing the security of controlled drugs.

PROTEC2 CLIQ was combined with the Traka21 key management system, which provides nurses’ access to a single key for the duration of their shift. By simply entering a PIN code to access a specific key which they validate using the wall programming unit, they can access every cabinet they’re authorised to open.

Dawn Davies, Matron and Head of Clinical Services at Spire Manchester Hospital, said:
“When designing and commissioning a brand new private hospital, we wanted to ensure we had equipment at the forefront of medical technology.  The systems from Abloy give us enhanced security measures and management of controlled drug storage and access.
“We’ve recommended the CLIQ system to other Spire Hospitals, and recently invited Abloy to our Regional Pharmacy Managers meeting to present the system as an example of best practice.”

Aaron Ballard-Ridley, Healthcare Sales Specialist at Abloy UK, added:
“We’ve had a great response from nurses to the CLIQ system. They really like having their own designated key as it means they’re not wasting time looking for keys around the ward.
“We provided training sessions for the nurses as an introduction to the system, and they’ve been very enthusiastic about this new innovative process for security and the convenience and time saved by having their own keys.”

Barrier-SABCO Passes 3kN Test

Barrier Components popular SABCO frameless balustrade system has passed the rigorous 3kN test with flying colours, confirming it offers the quality and performance for ANY commercial or residential installation.

What’s more, this system didn’t need any adaption to pass only requiring additional clamps, proving that this is a market leading design.  SABCO can now therefore be specified with confidence for all installations from stadia, airports and railway stations to commercial, residential and domestic developments.

Barrier-SABCO is a balustrade hardware system boasting a hi-tech, sleek and minimal finish and offers the perfect cost effective solution for Frameless glass providing an installation that’s designed to be simple to install and achieve BS EN 6180:2011*.

The system offers some great unique features. It only requires 400mm fixing centres to achieve the 1.5kN performance which is reduced to 200mm for 3Kn. It allows for easy alignment of the glass during installation providing up to +/-15mm adjustment either way.

Tightening is achieved using torx screws that can be tightened easily with a cordless screwdriver - speeding up the install time. The system includes removable covers (anodised to Marine grade 20 microns) to allow the installation of the channel without risk of damaging the finish.

The natural or Satin stainless anodised covers are then simply fitted at the end of the operation.  The system can also be supplied in either a base mount or side mount and in two finishes – Natural Anodised or Stainless Steel effect Anodised.  Both finishes are 20 microns thick so perfect for coastal or clean room applications.

A popular addition introduced to complement the system is high quality RGBW LED lighting strip.  The strips can be used with either a 12v or 24v power supply and has an impressive 60 LED’s per metre.

The pure white LED’s are incorporated into the colour LED’s and not set alternatively along the string and the strip is Nano coated rather than silicone offering a slimmer alternative that doesn’t discolour.  It is IP68 rated for external use, comes with a 5 year warranty and can be purchased with a range of RF remote controls if required.

Developed by Sadev of France, it is stocked and distributed by Barrier Components Ltd based in Purfleet, Essex in the UK.  Barrier Components is an architectural hardware supplier that for the past 30 years has specialised in the supply of high quality hardware products.

Beast of Turin to be Unleashed on the Grand Avenue!

The incredible fire breathing ‘Beast of Turin’ will be starring in the spectacular Grand Avenue display at the 2018 London Classic Car Show at ExCeL London (15-18 February).

Running through the very centre of the show, The Grand Avenue is one of the award-winning event’s many stand-out features. In essence, it is a dazzling automotive catwalk along which some of the world’s greatest classic road and competition cars are driven, thus bringing the show to life and adding another eye-catching dimension to the visitor experience.

Since the London Classic Car Show’s inception, The Grand Avenue has played host to wide variety of themes with everything from ‘The Perfect 10’ to ‘The 6 Nations’ and ‘A Century of Motoring’.

For 2018, the focus switches to stunning ‘Specials’ – unique machines that are steeped in history and mystique owing to their exclusive designs and often outlandish performance. And, with its mighty 28.5-litre engine, the extraordinary Beast of Turin – once the fastest car on Earth – certainly places excessively large ticks in all those boxes.

Targeting a land speed record, Fiat built just two of these outrageous behemoths back in the winter of 1910. Both were given the S76 designation and armed with a pair of the biggest capacity auto engines produced to this day.

While the remarkable cubic capacity in itself remains astonishing, the in-line four cylinder also boasts some pretty cutting-edge hardware for its era with four valves per cylinder, multi-spark and overhead cam technology helping it spit out something in the region of 300bhp.

Boasting so much beef and brawn, it was no surprise when the first of these colossal chain-driven Edwardian monsters – by now fittingly nicknamed ‘The Beast of Turin’ – was clocked at 116 mph on Salburn Sands, Yorkshire in 1911, breaking the World flying one-mile speed record. A considerably faster milestone of 134.6 mph was achieved a couple of years later at Ostend but by then the rules had changed and that ‘record’ was discounted when the car failed to make its now mandatory return run.

Thereafter, little was heard of the two preposterous machines for nearly a century until British enthusiast Duncan Pittaway set out on their trail. He found the surviving chassis of the first S76 languishing in Australia in what he describes as a ‘pretty torrid’ condition.

Fiat had scrapped the second car after the First World War to prevent rival manufacturers obtaining its technical secrets but Pittaway managed to locate its derelict engine from a pile of old bits in the Fiat factory and then purchase it after two and a half year’s of protracted negotiations. He and his team then set out on a mammoth and painstaking six-year restoration project.

The magnificent fruit of their labour is nothing short of astonishing. Bizarrely the engine cowl stands almost as tall as a man, and the incredible four-pot beneath it not only spits flames through its open exhaust ports but its bellows an earth-shattering roar.

Pittaway’s insanely gargantuan red creation has already wowed onlookers at places such as Goodwood but never before has it been unleashed indoors – a prospect that he can not wait to experience at ExCeL London next February.

“It’s a pretty special car,” he admits. “With its bull nose and pointy tail it was the first to have any streamlining and must have looked like a spaceship in its day,
“There were no Grands Prix back then, so Fiat and other manufacturers just wanted to build the fastest possible cars. They were still going down the blind alley that the bigger the engine capacity, the faster the potential speed – and the S76 is the very last of those big-engined machines.
“It’s actually pretty friendly to drive but I’m probably only saying that as, having done so many miles in the car, the novelty has worn off. I’m genuinely humbled that people, even if they don’t like cars, seem to love the S76. It’s going to be absolutely brilliant to see and hear it performing inside ExCeL.”

Event director Bas Bungish is every bit as excited as the car’s effervescent owner:
“London is famous for its world class theatre but I can’t believe that the West End has ever seen anything quite as dramatic as this,” enthused Bungish. “Believe me, it’s going to be an utterly dumbfounding experience; an epic phenomenon no one with even the slightest interest in cars of any vintage will want to miss. Remember, though, for all its stage presence and pure madness, The Beast of Turin is just one of the 60 incredible specials that we’ll have running up and down under the spot lights on The Grand Avenue at next year’s London Classic Car Show.”

All those wishing to see and hear the legendary fiery brute thundering up The Grand Avenue – plus the other 59 hand-picked specials – can take advantage of significant discounts on offer for those booking in advance.

If purchased now, adult admission costs just £25 (£30 on the door) and a range of upgraded Premium and Family Tickets are also available online.

Moreover, all tickets also include entry to the London Classic Car Show’s sister show Historic Motorsport International, which celebrates the UK’s leading role in all areas of historic motor sport.

Full details can be found on the show’s official website – thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk.

Wireless Lighting can help cut Corporate Lighting costs by half

As much as 20% of building operations costs could be saved simply by reducing the time that lights are left on when no-one is there.

Lighting accounts for around 40% of building operation costs, and this can be a huge financial drain for companies.

Data shows that 50% of this lighting is actually wasted due to lights being on when they are not needed or when an area is unoccupied. However, this can be mitigated against through the use of wireless lighting.

Recent developments in wireless lighting technology allow companies to have custom control of the work environment by remotely managing the lighting levels and timings throughout the entire facility.

The ability to configure lighting so that it is only on when needed — and at a brightness necessary for the task and/or time of day — means companies can save up to 50% of the energy wasted due to lighting. This was highlighted in a piece recently published by British power solutions manufacturers CMD looking into the benefits of wireless lighting when renovating an old building.

Aside from the considerable energy saving benefits, wireless lighting also has the potential to solve another huge problem in the construction industry — namely, the need for major renovation when repurposing industrial buildings into offices.

The use of old building for new purposes has become a major trend in recent years. Wireless lighting can drastically reduce costs as it requires minimal installation, removing the need to disturb original features in order to install cabling. This also helps to retain the aesthetic benefits of the building; such aesthetics are often a major reason for repurposing a building in the first place.

P C Henderson Evolve with Automation

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, is pleased to announce the launch of its new and improved Evolve range for internal automated straight sliding doors for residential and light commercial applications.

Evolve now takes advantage of P C Henderson’s renowned Soltaire product which is known in the market for its exceptionally smooth and reliable operation. To complement the qualities of Soltaire, a quieter operating motor has been paired with Evolve to create a more sophisticated and reliable offering to the market.

Technology is changing the way we live our lives and consequently has an impact the design and functionality of our homes and places of work. Smart home technology aims to make your living space more comfortable, convenient and adaptable. Evolve has been designed to support this movement as a step towards achieving a responsive home.

Evolve has been designed with flexibility in mind, can be soffit or face fixed and has a number of key safety features such as obstacle detection and a safe low voltage operation, in addition to this the doors also work as standard sliding doors in the event of a power failure.

Available to order now, the system is suppled in a variety of kits for wooden and glass doors weighing up to 80kg. Options include straight sliding and bi-parting models with simultaneous action and are supplied with two wall mounted ‘push and go’ control panels as standard. To further enhance the range a selection of sensors and remote controls are available as optional extras.

Fergus Pickard, Product Development Director at P C Henderson, comments:

“P C Henderson are delighted to release our new and improved Evolve automation range to the market. As a company we are committed to continuous improvement and product development to ensure that the market has a range of fit for purpose products that take advantage of new technologies and processes”.
Evolve has proved to be popular with residential and light commercial applications such as care homes as it allows for free unrestricted access around a building. Doors open wide enough to allow those in need of walking aids to pass freely and independently from one area to another.
