SWS UK Support Local Woodland and Grassroots Sports

Market-leading security door manufacturers, SWS UK, recently supported an initiative to combat the environmental footprint created by a carnival in their region, as well as sponsored their nearby Rugby Union team.

This year, Morecambe Carnival in Lancashire attracted 55,000 people over the second weekend in August and organisers wanted to offset the impact this would have on the local area.

SWS UK subsequently bought 120 trees for the carnival’s ‘Trees ‘n’ Bees’ initiative as part of their ongoing commitment to the environment.

The company are ISO:14001 accredited (the international environmental standard) and have successfully worked towards zero to landfill for production waste.

The ‘Trees ‘n’ Bees’ theme was chosen by the Carnival Committee to raise awareness of the importance of trees to the environment, the plight of diminishing bee populations, as well as to start a Carnival Wildlife Woodland for the area.

Event organiser, Carla Brayshaw, said:
“This will go towards offsetting the environmental footprint of the event and will be a wonderful legacy for the town, for our children, grandchildren and future generations.”
The shutter manufacturers also sponsored Morecambe’s Vale of Lune RUFC Under 14’s training kit for the 2018/19 season.

The junior squad have gotten off to a flying start with a winning streak that has pulled in some impressive scores.

In early October, the lads won with an incredible 97 – 14 when playing at home against Fleetwood.

Due to the age of the squad, rather than a league-format, the season’s champion team is decided through Lancashire Cup Matches.

What was previously the Under 13’s team won the prestigious prize last year and this year’s team have no signs of slowing down.

They are already working towards retaining their title after winning their first match for the cup this season, beating Heaton Moor 36 – 19.

This year's rules see's the team playing on a full-size pitch with 15 players.

The young team have been wearing their new training attire, with the SWS UK logo emblazoned across the back, every Thursday evening for practice sessions and on the Sundays that they aren’t competing.

Kevin Lindeque, Managing Director of SWS UK, said:
“At SWS, we get involved with a range of activities around our local community as it not only houses our business, but also our staff.
“A number of colleagues enjoyed the Morecambe Carnival, so to be a part of a legacy that will last for many years gives members of SWS UK something that we can all be proud of.
“We’re also very proud to sponsor Vale of Lune RUFC for the 2018/19 season and support grassroots sport in the area. They’re already performing really well this season, so it’s extra special sponsoring such a dedicated young team.”

Alutech Side Extension System from JD (UK) Reaches New Widths

Earlier this year, JD (UK) Ltd launched the latest development from Alutech for sectional garage doors, which pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with a double door side extension sprung system.

Previously, the maximum width for double doors with a side sprung system for the majority of the market was between 3045mm to 3500mm. The new system from Alutech can accommodate door widths of up 4500mm.

This has increased the market potential of sectional doors for JD (UK) customers and offers a host of additional benefits to both the installer and end-user.

JD (UK) customer, Terry Watson of Chesterfield-based A1 Garage Doors (UK) Ltd, told DIJ how it has transformed his business…

Terry explains,
“I was aware that something was in the pipeline and, with my engineering background, I anticipated the potential it offered. But it has been such a great improvement that, since it was launched in January, of the 20-25 sectional doors I order each month from JD (UK), nearly all of them are side sprung.
“In the past, customers have been put off by the look of the overhead and rear-mounted systems and it increases the overall cost significantly. The side extension sprung system is cheaper and more discreet so the price and aesthetics are immediately more appealing. It’s also quicker to install, often saving up to 2 hours per job. This frees up my time to carry out more surveys, which generates more jobs for my installers and more revenue for my business.
“Overhead and rear-mounted systems can be complicated and rely on torsion leaving them prone to maintenance issues, particularly on bigger doors, which results in call backs for me. The springs on the side extension system work independently of each other and don’t have to be run with torsion so are easier to install and more reliable, saving time both at install and by reducing call backs. The system offers a problem-solving solution to customers, giving them more options where an automated sectional door might not have been possible due to height and headroom restrictions.
“The increased width capability of the double side extension sprung sectional door from JD (UK) means I can now offer the additional benefits of this system to most of my bigger jobs. It’s been a total game changer for me.”

To discuss Alutech sectional doors and automation in more detail you should call the JD sales team on 01924 472924 or email sales@jdukltd.co.uk .

Carlo Gavazzi has extended its popular range of polarized retro-reflective sensors with a powerful stylish and versatile unit, the PD86XAP12.  The sensor is designed to meet the harsh environments of today’s industrial door and gate applications.

With a long straight sensing distance of 12 metres on an 80mm diameter reflector the PD86 has a simple adjustable horizontal and vertical lens + 4.5° to compensate for uneven mounting surfaces, the sensor is particularly suited to applications where dust and other environmental conditions can influence the sensing distance.

The 44 x 86 x 39mm housing is manufactured in a either a strong metal version housing manufactured from ZAMAK 5 or a smart grey glass reinforced polycarbonate avoiding corrosion issues whilst providing a water tight (IP66) and screwless construction.

To make for easier mounting the cable entry has been enlarged and comes with either fixed terminals or a detachable terminal block 6 x 1.5mm2.  The PD86 has proven immunity against foreign light, SPST, relay output, dipswitch for inverting the relay and for testing the input to a normally high or normally low position as well as an operating temperature range of -25° to +60°C.

Richard Reeve to take Axim Architectural Hardware to New Heights

TPG, The Parkside Group Limited is pleased to announce that Richard Reeve, Sales Director will be exclusively looking after one of its major divisions, Axim Architectural Hardware.

Richard has been with TPG for 15 years and is excited to take the leading hardware brand to even greater heights.

Richard said: “Axim is one of the most trusted brands in the industry for reliability and quality.  Axim celebrated 30 years of business last year and having worked throughout the industry I know that the Axim TC-8800 series of Concealed Transom Closers is well known for its superb long-term performance and as part of TPG, Axim, is backed up by market leading delivery to its European wide distributor and partner network.”

Over the last 30 years Axim has extensively developed its product range to include all the hardware that top quality commercial doors require.

Richard commented that: “Everyone knows the top performer the Axim TC Series of Concealed Closers, however, I am not sure that everyone is aware of how extensive the Axim product range is.  The Axim PR Series Panic Exit range is comprehensive, and the Axim Panic Exit Locking Handle is one of the most high-quality products I have seen which fits across the entire range.”

The Axim branded product range includes Emergency and Panic Exit Devices that are certified to BS EN 179 and BS EN 1125, a range of handles including D-handles, Lever Handles, Pad Handles, Pull Handles and Tube Handles, Floor Springs which can take a door weight of up to 150Kg, Locks including Mortice, Dead Latch, Extension Flush Bolts for security slave doors.

The Axim TC-8800 Series of Concealed Transom Closer will fit most major manufacture’s doors and has 3 different strengths.  The TC 9900 is a universal closer which is ideal for repair and maintenance and where closers have failed, the TC9900 offers a fast solution without the need for costly repairs.

Richard continues: “Axim is known very well in the aluminium door industry, however the Surface Mounted Door Closer, the Axim FC Series, offers a solution for both aluminium and timber doors, in fact it even comes as standard with fixings to suit both materials.  This means that installers and distributors can minimise the closers they carry, and the Axim FC-1000 Series has been tested for Fire Rating to BS 476-22 1987.”

Offering innovative solutions has been at the fore of Axim and launching new products such as the Axim ES-2100 Electric Strike a remote access product that offers installers a reduction in installation and maintenance time.  The Axim LK-2100 Reversible Deadlatch offers a non-handed solution which means that installers and distributors can reduce their stock-holding by only stocking one Deadlatch instead of two.

Last year Axim had a face-lift with a new revamped logo, which joined the new website and Technical Literature which offers extensive technical, specification and installation information with speedy navigation to get you to the place you need to be.

Axim designs and supplies a comprehensive in-stock range of transom closers, panic exit devices, electric strikes, deadlatches, surface mounted door closers, floor-springs, flush-bolts, letter-plates, locks and handles through a pan-European distributor supply chain.

American Muscle is on the march at the December Sale

1955 Ford Thunderbird

Classic Car Auctions will be bringing out the star spangled banner at its December sale for a trio of American muscle cars that will be offered at its next sale at the Warwickshire Event Centre on 1st December.

Leading the charge will be a 1955 Ford Thunderbird estimated at £28,000 to £32,000. Powered by a 4.8 litre V8 with an automatic gearbox and 198bhp, this T-Bird is finished in gleaming Raven Black with a Silver hardtop and red interior. Imported to the UK in 2014 it was treated to a bare metal respray, new hood and new white wall tyres, completing the classic Route 66 cruiser look with new interior trim and carpet.

“American cars are generally much bigger, brasher and louder than their European cousins”, says Richard Greenhalgh, classic car specialist at Classic Car Auctions. “They’re always an exciting sight on UK roads due to their rarity, whether it be a classic Ford Mustang or a big shouty Corvette, wherever you go people see you and most definitely hear you coming from a long way off.”

1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Stampeding its way into the sale is a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 estimated at £15,000 to £18,000. The SportsRoof model is finished in Pewter Silver with the factory correct Mach 1 graphics adorning the car along with a black interior. The Mustang had a complete bare metal respray in 2016 where the interior was also completely refitted including the carpets and headlining. Powered by a 285bhp 5.8 litre V8 engine which was rebuilt in 2016, the car has been fitted with a new fuel tank and fuel lines, along with uprated discs and springs.

“The American cars offer something you rarely find in European motors, fun. The power, the speed, the noise and the looks are all there for one reason, to put a smile on your face. The cars we have on offer at the December Sale all offer something different, the Corvette brings the speed, the Mustang brings the noise and the Thunderbird has looks to die for,” concludes Richard.

1999 Chevrolet Corvette C5

One of the more interesting prospects at the sale is a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette C5 offered without reserve. Imported from Japan in 2016, this example of America’s answer to the Porsche 911 is finished in Light Silver Metallic with a black leather interior. With only 55,296 miles this ‘Vette is equipped with a 5.7 litre LS1 V8 engine which puts out 345bhp and offers open roof motoring thanks to its targa top. In excellent condition throughout, this is an incredible opportunity for bidders at CCA’s December Sale.

For more information on the American muscle and the rest of the cars on offer at the December Sale please visit: www.classiccarauctions.co.uk

Half hour test success for SWA creates new openings for Steel Doorsets

A painstaking programme of development and testing, conducted by the Steel Window Association’s technical committee, has led to the UK’s top-rated fire testing centre granting a half-hour test certificate for both single and double W20 doorsets.

Ongoing work by SWA member companies over the past eight months has culminated in the full fire test, carried out at the facilities of Exova Warrington, under BS 476:Pt 22: resulting in a 30-0 rating.

Where such tests are normally carried out on fire doors set into masonry or gypsum boarded wall constructions, the SWA opted to mount both the single and double doorsets within a glazed screen, replicating the situation in which they are routinely specified by architects and interior designers.

This now means that installations of single or double doorsets as part of full internal steel screens can be carried out in full compliance with building regulations; but will only be available through companies belonging to the Steel Window Association.

Although the W20 profiles employed were standard sections, careful consideration was given to both the assembly and fixing of the steel frames, along with the way the doors themselves were located. This included fitting steel ‘location blocks’ at the top, bottom and mid height of the frames and, additionally, stabilising the coupling members between elements and uprating the glazing.

As a leading member of the SWA technical committee, David Northam of NSB Casements, was closely involved with the fire test programme.
He commented, “Some of the steps taken, such as reducing the fixing centres and using bigger studs, are quite straightforward, but we also investigated a variety of technologies available across the fire industry; particularly for strengthening the lock side of the frame to prevent bowing under heat. Both assemblies easily achieved the half hour integrity mark, with the double door test being halted after 42 minutes and the single door test being halted beyond 40 minutes.”

As a result, the fire door assemblies are all glazed with 7.2mm Pilkington Pyrodur® safety glass, seated on intumescent mastic tape, and then the perimeter filled with an intumescent silicone sealant. There is also an intumescent strip fitted around the entire doorframe to prevent smoke and flames escaping the side where a fire starts; although building regulations no longer require the installation of an automatic closer in these situations.

The SWA’s President, Darren Lloyd of Govette Windows, confirmed:
“We wanted to be able to create and provide Internal steel door partitions with fire certificates for domestic applications. This will enable any of the dozen companies which belong to the Steel Window Association to manufacture and install modular screens with single or double doors.”
“The recognition under BS 476 will open up more opportunities; in particular for premises such as bars and restaurants which want to create defined spaces while keeping an attractive appearance and maintaining light transmission. Also the market for basement construction is still growing, especially around London where clients often want to divide a corridor from a new kitchen, but not lose any light.”

Steel Window Association’s members are able to offer a full selection of options for new build and replica refurbishment, as well as historic projects; including W20, W30, W40 and W50 frames able to comply with the requirements of Part L to the Building Regulations. Choosing an SWA member to manufacture and install your steel windows and doors ensures that you are receiving the highest standard of fabrication, Installation and customer service.

For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk or call 020 8543 2841.

Secure smart standards

The new TS621:2018 standard, created by the Door and Hardware Federation, has been adopted as the recognised standard for smart locks by the British Standard Institute (BSI), and has received the coveted Kitemark status.

The Conexis® L1 from Yale is the first ever smart lock to adhere to the new standard, undergoing rigorous testing in terms of quality, durability, as well as both mechanical and electronic attack testing.

In order to comply with the new standard, smart locks must meet mechanical security requirements, as per traditional British Standard locks. These tests include the PAS24:2016 attack testing and the TS007 3-star cylinder attack test.

For added safety, British Standard smart locks also require a mechanical release on the inside of the door, that doesn't require electronics, to ensure an easy escape in the event of a fire.
The new electro-mechanical part of the standard requires the smart lock to be attacked by MLA locksmiths, to ensure it cannot be manipulated and compromise the security of the lock.

Finally, the electronic hacking tests are designed to test the electronic security of the lock to ensure it is secure against all relevant hacking methods.

This standard will provide consumers with the much-needed reassurance that smart locks are now recognised by the British Standards Institute and will easily identified by the trusted Kitemark symbol.

A year to remember for HOPPE - 30 years in the UK

Ged Ryan, HOPPE (UK) chief executive

HOPPE has celebrated its 30th anniversary in the UK in 2018. Ged Ryan, HOPPE (UK) chief executive, looks back on a pivotal year.

Thirty years old usually stands as a mark of maturity, the point when we enter one of our most productive and defining decades.

I guess you could say much the same about our company. HOPPE is no longer a youngster in the UK market, and has clearly established its reputation for the highest standards of product engineering, manufacture and customer service in architectural ironmongery.

SecuForte window handle

Highlights this year have included the completion of our strategic review of the HOPPE (UK) product range. Category by category we have examined where we are, if we are benchmarked the right way by our customers, if they use us in the right way. It’s to make sure the products we have are relevant for the future. Whether that’s new technology, new finishes, or meeting new standards.

The result of this review is an exciting range of new innovations. For example, we have just announced the launch of the SecuForte® range of window handles offering a completely new standard of burglary resistance in the UK.

SecuForte window handle (showing operation)

This is just the latest example of HOPPE ingenuity. When the window is closed or tilted, the handle and square spindle are uncoupled and the handle is automatically locked. It is a unique concept that protects against the unauthorised opening of a window from outside.

It is well known that in the UK burglars tend to target windows as they generally offer easier access than doors. So while a burglar intending to turn the window handle from outside might be able to break it off the rosette using massive physical force, yet the square spindle will still not move. The window cannot be opened and the break-in attempt will have failed.

SecuForte® also protects not only against displacing the window fitting from outside, but also against the break-in methods of piercing the glass seal or drilling the frame in order to be able to turn the window handle from outside.

Other major developments that mark our 30th anniversary year have included two excellent roundtable discussions with our customers – one on accessibility and fire safety, and the other on proof of performance on fire safety issues. These have been vital conversations to have following the Grenfell Tower fire and the influential Hackitt Review.

One of HOPPE (UK)’s CPD sessions

Customers around the UK and Ireland have benefitted from HOPPE (UK)’s CPD seminars, where these discussions around fire safety, accessibility and security have continued.

We also introduced one CPD specifically for architecture practices based in Ireland. Approved by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, it covers all the essentials, taking architects through the main considerations that must be made when specifying door hardware, the specification process, how to avoid risk and the different types of door hardware and accessories.

Delivered in-house by Ellen Mack, HOPPE (UK)’s business development manager in Ireland, the free CPD also covers the benefits of using a Registered Architectural Ironmonger on projects and how to get the most from this working relationship.

This is just one example of the exceptional dedication to excellence shown by all HOPPE (UK)’s people. Another example is Jess Roberts, our marketing manager, who was announced as winner of the Top Student Award, achieving the highest overall grade and distinction in the post-graduate direct and digital marketing course at the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing.

Other stories that the Door Industry Journal has covered this year include a series of important new appointments at HOPPE (UK), including Garrath Willshaw joining as business development manager for the North of England in January, Rob Thomas taking on the same role for the Midlands in April, and Rick Corkhill joining as the door and window business development manager for the north in July.

So where next for HOPPE(UK) in 2019? The year ahead will be full of Brexit, of course. But look out also for more new products, new finishes and new technologies to transform door and window hardware in the UK.
