Safe and Secure Entrance Doors

Building security in the UK faces a continually changing landscape with possible forced entry from a wider range of assailants and available tools.

Here, Iain Entwistle, Product Marketing Manager at Meesons A.I. Ltd, looks at why LPS 1175 sets the standard for physical robustness in relation to revolving doors and security portals.

The point of entrance is often the most vulnerable part of a building when it comes to attack by criminals, protestors or terrorists. Traditionally, larger premises have relied on a manned gatehouse at the perimeter and reception or security team at the building entrance.

However, as intruders become more willing to use force, or simply tailgate their way in by closely following the person in front, specifiers are looking for more robust ways of protecting people and assets, whilst still retaining architectural appeal.

An effective way of making sure the building façade is hardened against criminal attack using a range of tools such as hammers, screwdrivers and saws is to specify a Revolving Door or Security Portal that is approved to Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175: Issue 8. With solutions available to provide ease of transit for wheelchairs, bikes, prams or trolleys.

Due to their proven ability to withstand a forced attack, they are a good choice where 24/7 unmanned access control is required or can be used in conjunction with a security team and here anti-tailgating detection can trigger an alarm if anyone attempts to make an unauthorised entry.

Our LPS 1175 Revolving Door remains the world’s first to meet this standard. It achieves Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175: Issue 8 up to C5 (SR3) during normal operation and is also the first Revolving Door to be accredited by Secured by Design.

Meeting the requirements set out in Document Q of the Building Regulations, for the security of dwellings and communal entrances, means specifiers no longer need to compromise on their buildings’ security.

Being in a permanent state of attack-readiness ensures no user intervention is required and avoids any delay in activating a secondary layer of defence such as night security shutter.

It’s worth bearing in mind that some revolving doors rely on a secondary barrier because they are not in a permanent state of attack-readiness. Specifying an LPS 1175 version that is fully attack-ready combines functionality and forced entry protection into a single product.

When specified with anti-tailgating detection, the single-person authentication prevents unauthorised individuals from piggybacking their way into the facility by closely following the person in front. Legitimate building users can present their ID card or biometric data in order to traverse into the building.

For sites where access control is not required the Revolving Door or Security Portal can be configured with free-flow entry/ exit during the day and lock down mode during out of hours or when required.

Issue 8 of LPS1175 is the latest version of the standard. It retains the same rigorous testing procedures as Issue 7 with the addition of several new tests to reflect a broader spectrum of threat scenarios. Important updates include changes to reflect the scope of tools now available, size of tools, access to tools, portability of tools, power and effectiveness.

The new ‘matrix’ style security ratings defined within the revised standard facilitates LPS1175 being applied to a far wider scope of threat scenarios.

That means the previous single digit performance classification within Issue 7 (Security Ratings SR1 to 8) has been extended to form two elements that classify performance in terms of; Threat Level (letter A to H), corresponding with the tool kit used to evaluate the product’s intruder resistance and the number of attackers involved.

The second element assigns a numeric value (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20), corresponding with the minimum Delay (in minutes) provided by the product when placed in a locked position.

Although the new standard covers 48 combinations of threat and delay it is envisaged that specifiers will achieve an extended delay by deploying a series of products in a layered approach. For instance, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation at the perimeter and LPS 1175 approved Revolving Door or Security Portal at the building façade. We were guided by LPS 1175 when developing a range of Security Portals that achieve A1 (SR1), B3 (SR2) and C5 (SR3).

A safer future
LPS 1175: Issue 8 is an important security standard when it comes to specifying Security Portals and Revolving Doors not least because the standard is now a requirement in many different sectors including: education, finance, healthcare, manufacturing, the public sector, residential, retail and utilities.

Several industry bodies are encouraging the uptake of LPS 1175. Richard Flint, LPCB's Physical Security Certification Scheme Manager, said: “When assessing the overall level of risk, correctly specified security products are critical in protecting buildings and their users against crime. We encourage the use of LPS 1175-approved products wherever possible because it hardens premises against criminal attack.

Specifiers should refer to the LPCB Red Book when looking for LPS 1175- approved Security Portals and other physical security products. Security Portals certified to these standards are able to resist experienced attempts by criminals at forced entry using a wide range of tools.”

He added: “LPCB’s LPS 1175 standard sets the bar in providing specifiers with confidence in specifying physical entrance security that is able to withstand forced attack. Specifying LPS 1175 products which has been independently third party tested provides confidence that the product will perform as claimed, whereas untested products may not perform as expected.”

Until relatively recently there were no Revolving Doors or Security Portals available to LPS 1175. Historically, that meant compromises had to be made between security and aesthetics, resulting in some buildings ending up looking fortress-like with little architectural appeal or buildings settling for a less secure solution in order to retain building aesthetics.

However, that has now changed with LPS 1175 approved Revolving Door and Security Portals removing the need for multiple or secondary security barriers and which are aesthetically pleasing.

The Only Car Capable of Filming the 2020 GT-R NISMO? - Another GT-R

Precision driving expert transforms Nissan sports car into a high-performance camera rig.

Nissan developed the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO to be the pinnacle of the iconic nameplate. For maximum performance, the engine was upgraded, its aerodynamics further enhanced, and weight was shed through the meticulous use of exotic materials.

But when the time came to document the newest Nissan super sports car in its natural habitat – on the track – there was one problem. How to film it?

Enter Mauro Calo. A professional precision driver and automotive video expert known for his work on big-budget blockbuster movies and automotive TV shows, he has the perfect car to chase and film the 2020 GT-R NISMO – another GT-R.

Watch the video to see how the filming was done - download or view a copy here.

While Nissan helped locate a suitable GT-R to be transformed into a purpose-built camera car, Calo was already working on the design. Once the car arrived, he and his team fitted a bespoke tubular structure that was welded to the chassis and able to hold the weight of the professional carbon-fiber gimbal camera mounting system.

Nissan GT-R: the ultimate high-speed camera car

Until Calo realized his ambition of developing the ultimate high-speed camera car, the vehicle of choice for this type of filming would be a high-performance SUV. However, SUVs lack the speed or agility to follow the world’s fastest performance cars on track.

Thanks to its low center of gravity, adjustable sports suspension and four-seater configuration, the GT-R is the perfect base car to accommodate a camera rig of this type. And once the performance of the twin-turbo 3.8 V6 is deployed via its advanced all-wheel drive system, it’s easy to see why Calo chose it.
“When I started to think about developing a high-performance camera car, I quickly realized that the Nissan GT-R was the only car that would meet my criteria,” said Calo. “It has supercar performance, with outstanding all-wheel drive handling and stability. It’s famously reliable, and it can seat the team I need to operate the camera system. There were no other contenders.”

Fabulous footage of the world’s fastest cars

Not many GT-R customers regularly use all four seats, but a typical shoot requires a full camera crew. With Calo at the wheel, a gimbal operator, a focus puller and a director can be in the car at the same time – ensuring fabulous high-definition footage of the world’s fastest cars at high speed (with all safety precautions taken, on a closed circuit, of course).
“I knew already, from driving it on photo and video shoots, what a great car the Nissan GT-R is,” Calo said. “But since I adapted my Nissan GT-R to be a high-speed camera car and have been using it to film some of the world’s fastest cars on track, my respect and appreciation of its performance, reliability and stability has only increased. It amazes me and the teams I work with every time we use it.”

So there was no choice as to which vehicle would be able to shoot the fastest and most capable GT-R ever created – the 2020 GT-R NISMO.

With careful choreography planned in advance and coordinated via walkie-talkie, the two GT-Rs chased each other around the Lausitzring racetrack in Brandenburg, Germany, as part of the GT-R NISMO’s media preview event. The recorded footage has been viewed millions of times on YouTube and other social media platforms.

Free guide to Part M and thresholds available to download from MI Products

MI Products, the leading hardware specialists, has created a handy guide to help customers meet Building Regulations Approved Document Part M.

The guide includes information about the correct thresholds to use in order to meet the guidelines for accessibility.
“We created the Guide to Thresholds and Part M as a crib sheet for fabricators and installers to refer to,” says Ian Searle, Director at MI Products.
“It contains lots of information at a glance on what Part M is, how thresholds can comply with Part M, why Part M and accessibility is so important and who is responsible for compliance.”
Approved Document Part M is a section in Building Regulations that contains guidance on accessibility to ensure that new build properties are suitable for those with limited access.
“With more installers and fabricators working on new build projects, it means that they can refer back to one, easy to read, document.
“They have peace of mind and reassurance that they are meeting regulations and the demands from architects and developers for accessible buildings.”
MI Products are the experts in low door thresholds, and have developed the FX15. FX15 is the genuine Part M threshold, achieving a 15mm upstand without any extensions or ramps.

This enables easily accessible entrances and exits for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. The FX15 threshold is also ideal for children and pushchairs.

The guide can be downloaded from www.miproducts.co.uk where information can be found on Part M and FX15.

Applications increase for DHF’s CSCS card partner scheme

Tamworth-based trade association, DHF (Door & Hardware Federation), has confirmed a healthy number of applicants have already signed up for its CSCS-approved card partner scheme.

Launched last November in collaboration with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA), DHF’s CSCS card provision is for those who work with industrial doors, domestic garage doors, automated gates & traffic barriers and metal or timber doors.

DHF’s Commercial Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens explains:
“In just a few short months, we have been delighted to see interest building in the CSCS-approved card.”
“CSCS cards are supported by the government and provide proof that individuals working in construction have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job that they are doing on-site.”
Patricia continued:
“Whilst not a legislative requirement, the card plays an essential role in improving standards and safety on UK construction sites and ensuring that the workforce is appropriately qualified or experienced.”

As part of the scheme, and in addition to any criteria set by CSCS such as a relevant NVQ for the Blue Skilled Worker card, DHF is asking that anyone who is applying for a card has evidence of CPD (continued professional development).

This will usually be in the form of a valid DHF training course certificate. And if individuals, for example, work on both gates and industrial doors, they will need to demonstrate they have passed two courses, one for industrial & garage doors and one for automated gates & traffic barriers.

Of course, these are not just for automated gates or industrial and garage doors; the first card produced was issued to Richard Warmington of Titan Door Systems Limited, who specialise in the supply and installation of high-quality steel doorsets, screens and entrance systems.

DHF’s launch of CSCS cards is further validation of the federation’s continuing drive for safety, best practice and raising standards, industry wide. The association is renowned for its passionate commitment to training and development and is recognised as a ‘Centre of Excellence’, the ‘go to’ place for technical advice and guidance.

Commenting on DHF’s CSCS-approved card partner scheme launch, Gordon Jenkins, the then Director of Operations at CSCS said:

“CSCS is pleased to see the collaboration between DHF and ADSA in the issuing of cards for the door and gate sectors. This collaboration demonstrates DHF’s commitment to meeting the requirements of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and ensuring that construction site workers are appropriately qualified.
“In the process, we are all playing our part in improving standards and safety on UK construction sites. CSCS looks forward to a long and productive relationship between our three organisations.”

For further information on how to apply for a CSCS card, please visit the DHF website: www.dhfonline.org.uk

Designing Out Crime Officers visit Assa Abloy's Flagship Factory in Willenhall

Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) from three police forces were treated to a glimpse behind the scenes during a visit to ASSA ABLOY’s largest manufacturing site in the UK at Willenhall, West Midlands, last month.

The DOCOs from police forces in Cheshire, West Mercia and West Midlands were given a guided tour around the factory to see and learn how a wide range of locks, cylinders and keys are made.

They also watched a demonstration of how a door is put through its paces as part of the PAS 24 standard using tools ranging from a screwdriver to a hefty ram – similar to those used by police officers carrying out raids on domestic properties.

The visit was organised by Secured by Design (SBD), a police organisation which works alongside police forces around the UK, to ‘build in’ security measures and techniques into new and refurbished buildings in a wide range of sectors including residential, education, health, transportation, commercial and sport and leisure.

More than one million homes have been built to SBD’s crime prevention standards over the last 20 years with reductions in crime of up to 87% in new homes.

DOCOs, who are mostly based in police stations, work with designers, architects, developers and local planning authorities to incorporate crime prevention measures from the initial concept and planning stages through to final construction.

ASSA ABLOY specialises in door opening solutions. It operates in more than 70 countries with over 48,000 employees. Customers come from the institutional, commercial and residential marketplaces.

Factory host Steve Craddock explains the operations and processes
to Designing Out Crime Officers

The site visit focused on two of ASSA ABLOY’s key brands Yale and Mul-T-Lock.

The visit included a demonstration in the factory’s dedicated residential showroom of Yale’s range of mobile phone app controlled smart, interconnected security products, including door locks, alarms and CCTV cameras.

There was also a presentation from Suresh Peri, Commercial & Technical Manager, of Mul-T-Lock, who explained their innovative eCLIQ technology, which allows both the granting and removing of access permissions remotely – an advanced system, which won Product of the Year at the National Locksmith Awards in December 2019.

Visiting the ASSA ABLOY Portobello site at School Street, Willenhall, West Midlands were Alison Gabbott, Mark Cotton and Colin Marples from Cheshire; Peter Aston and Jacqueline Godfrey-Hunt from West Mercia; and Adrian Bartlett from West Midlands. Also attending was Richard Waterhouse from Bromsgrove and Redditch Council.

SBD Development Officer Hazel Goss (front centre)
with the Designing Out Crime Officers

Hazel Goss, SBD Development Officer, who arranged the visit, said:
“We all had an amazing day at ASSA ABLOY, learning about what they do, seeing their new products and enjoying a factory tour. Their factory and operations are on such a huge and impressive scale. It’s great to see at first-hand how everything comes together to make the final products.
“On behalf of the Designing Out Crime Officers, I want to say a big thank you to the company for their time and hospitality. I am looking forward to arranging another visit for those Designing Out Crime Officers who unfortunately were unable to come on this occasion.”

ASSA ABLOY’s Martin Ward, Mechanical Senior Product Manager-Yale UK, said:
“Yale are committed to developing products that keep our customers, and their properties, safe. That’s why we’re proud to work closely with the experts from Secured by Design to design out crime. We welcomed the opportunity to show them the measures we have in place and the exciting plans we have for the future.
“We’d like to thank Secured by Design for taking the time to visit our site at Portobello and for their continued efforts to keep our homes safe with stringent security measures. We strive to continue to design and manufacture products that meet these high standards and carry the Secured by Design accreditation.”

P C Henderson Release Two New Installation Videos

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, has released two new installation videos for its market leading range of Pocket Door Pro and Husky Soft Stop systems.

Launched early 2019, Pocket Door Pro and Husky Soft Stop, although new to the market, have quickly grown to become two of the company’s most popular products due to their high quality design, flexible functionality options and easy installation.

The company has now developed two high quality installation videos in order to complement the product offering.

Stephanie Lee, Marketing Manager at P C Henderson said:
“Since launching our first set of installation videos back in 2015 – we’ve gone onto develop a total of 17 videos which have been watched by almost half a million people worldwide - making them the most popular of their kind.
“Due to the popularity of our Pocket Door Pro and Husky Soft Stop products, we know our latest videos are going to be a big hit”.

Developed in the company’s in house studio, with the help of an outside agency, the videos detail the tools required and kit contents before guiding customers through the installation process step by step, highlighting ‘top tips’ along the way.

Featuring a realistic CGI background, the videos enable customers to see what the products will look like in situ – providing a realistic demonstration.

Stephanie continued:
“Developing tools to make our customers lives easier is always a fundamental part of our marketing strategy – the videos have been an extremely successful development.
“Customers can view them on our website, scan the QR code on our paper fitting instructions or, if you’re a P C Henderson distributor, embed them onto your own website.
“They’re also a great way to instill confidence, customers can watch the videos prior to purchase and see just how easy our kit packs are to install”.

Currently receiving over 10,000 views a month, the videos are available for the majority of P C Henderson’s kit pack sliding door hardware products which are predominantly aimed towards the DIY market.

P C Henderson offers a wide range of sliding and folding door hardware catering for maximum door weights of between 9kg and 8000kg. Ford Develops 3D-Printed Locking Wheel Nuts to Thwart Thieves

As car security systems become increasingly more sophisticated, thieves are targeting car parts instead, including alloy wheels. Ford-patented unique lock nuts, personalised by owners, could prevent alloy wheel thefts

One method to deter wheel thieves is to use locking nuts, one on each wheel, which require a special adapter, or key, to loosen. But even these are vulnerable, leading Ford engineers to harness 3D printing technology to develop next-generation locking wheel nuts.

See how the wheel nuts are created in this video - it's fascinating.

Voice pattern defines the nut’s shape

Together with EOS, a leading supplier for high-end solutions in additive manufacturing, Ford has created locking nuts with contours based on the driver’s voice.

Like an iris scan or a fingerprint, a person’s voice can be used as a unique biometric identification.    Engineers record the driver’s voice for a minimum of one second, saying something like “I drive a Ford Mustang”, and use software to convert that singular soundwave into a physical, printable pattern. This pattern is then turned into a circle and used as the design for the locking nut’s indentation and key.

With the geometry in place, the nut and key are designed as one piece, then 3D-printed using acid and corrosion resistant stainless steel. When finished, the nut and key are separated, with a small amount of grinding required to make them ready for use.

The design also includes second-level security features that prevent the nut from being cloned or copied. The unevenly spaced ribs inside the nut and indentations that widen the deeper they go prevent a thief from making a wax imprint of the pattern, as the wax breaks when it is pulled from the nut.

If not using the driver’s voice to create the contours, the nuts could feature designs specific to a vehicle, such as with the Mustang logo, or use the driver’s initials. The design could also take inspiration from a driver’s interest, for example, by using the outline of a famous racetrack.

Expanding the use of 3D printing

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, offers design flexibility to help reduce weight, improve performance and create parts that wouldn’t be possible using conventional methods. For more than 30 years, Ford has increasingly used 3D printing to make prototype parts which help reduce the development time for new vehicles.

The company has also used this technology to create parts that feature in the Ford GT, Focus and Mustang GT500, and will make more 3D-printed parts in the future. Special bespoke car parts are also 3D printed, including the intake manifold in Ken Block’s Hoonitruck and the pair of wind louvres found on the M-Sport Ford Fiesta World Rally Championship car.

On the Ford production line, 3D printing is used to create assembly line tools that are up to 50 per cent lighter, which makes repetitive tasks less physically stressful and helps improve manufacturing quality. As many of these tools are made of nylon, Ford has introduced a recycling programme that turns old 3D-printed pieces and plastics from manufacturing areas into 100 per cent recycled nylon. Ford also creates 3D-printed safety equipment, such as protection sleeves for rotating tools used on the production line, which prevent operators from incurring finger and arm injuries.

Raphael Koch, Ford Advanced Materials and Processes research engineer, said:
“It’s one of the worst experiences for a driver, to find their car up on blocks with all four wheels gone. Some alloy wheels can cost thousands to replace, but these unique rim nuts will stop thieves in their tracks. Making wheels more secure and offering more product personalisation are further proof that 3D printing is a game-changer for car production.”
