Yale’s Postmaster Professional TS008 Letterplate ticks all the boxes for Meeting Standards and Fire Door Compliance

Yale understands that keeping up to date on the latest security standards can often be confusing. From fire door compliance to meeting PAS 24:2016, there are a number of factors to be considered.

In the UK, current guidance states that public or private shared properties should be compartmentalised – spilt into smaller spaces with barriers preventing the spread of fire and smoke. The fire doorsets used to help create these compartments should be able to halt fire for at least 30 minutes, with taller or higher occupancy buildings needing doors able to endure for at least 60 minutes.

Since its launch in 2018, Yale’s Postmaster Professional TS008 letterplate has made significant developments boasting a long list of features that set it apart from other letterplates in the market, most notably fire testing.

FD60
The FD60 specification tests doorsets to withstand at least 60 minutes protection against fires. When tested as part of a doorset, Yale’s Postmaster Professional TS008 letterplate not only exceeded the FD60 time test by an additional 25%, but also successfully passed the smoke leakage test.

Secured by Design (SBD)
Studies have shown that SBD recognised developments are up to 75% less likely to be burgled and show a reduction of 25% in criminal damage , while the Association of British Insurers estimates that introducing SBD across the UK would save the economy more than £3.2 billion over the course of 20 years .

If a project is recognised by SBD, it has shown that it meets a number of exacting standards. As such, it has become an important part of quality assurance for housing providers and is referenced in UK Building Regulations.

PAS 24:2016
On 1st October 2018, an updated version of the PAS 24 standard, which covers enhanced security doorsets, came into effect. PAS 24:2016 is now mandatory for all new developments or refurbishment projects that wish to meet Secured by Design, and this includes the requirement for TS008 letterplates to be installed on all doorsets.

TS008
The TS008 technical specification was developed by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) and covers ‘enhanced security and general requirements for letter plate assemblies and slide through boxes’. Its main purpose is evaluating how the letterplate performs against opportunist attacks from burglars and other criminals, though it also assesses its resistance to corrosion, water, and fire.

Approved Document Q
TS008 certified letterplates are specifically referenced within the Building Regulation’s Approved Document Q as being shown to protect against various attack methods, including letterplate ‘fishing’.

The Yale Postmaster Professional letterplate helps architects, specifiers, and OEMs to meet all these standards. It is the most rigorously tested TS008 product on the market and comes from a brand that is trusted to produce fully compliant doorset components.

The letterplate has an external austenitic 304 stainless steel letter flap that comes with a 25-year surface finish guarantee. It also features a flap that opens 180 degrees to help eliminate excess leverage on pivot points and a complete peripheral seal on the external flap to help form a thermal and acoustic barrier.

The Yale Postmaster Professional is available in a range of finishes including polished, brushed, satin silver, gold, black and white, and its elegant and slim design makes it suitable even for narrow hallways. It also has no sharp corners, reducing the risk of injury to children and pets when held open by packages and newspapers.

Opting for the Yale Postmaster Professional TS008 letterplate on fire accredited doorsets helps defend buildings against the spread of fire and meet the latest PAS 24 standard. This, in turn, allows OEMs, housebuilders, and social housing providers to ensure they achieve Secured by Design across all residences, in order to continue to provide safe and quality housing to the nation.

Yale Door and Window Solutions has also launched a whitepaper to help architects, specifiers, and OEMs to specify and fit letterplates that meet PAS 24:2016, in line with Secured by Design regulations.

Procter Contracts provides full package of Gates and Fencing for new HMRC Offices in Manchester

Procter Contracts has designed, manufactured and installed a complete package of high-quality gates and Secured by Design fencing for Three New Bailey, Salford, which is to be occupied by HMRC as its new Greater Manchester base from 2022.

Developer Bowmer + Kirkland had been asked to create something out of the ordinary for the new seven-storey building that HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs) will be leasing in its entirety for 25 years. The designers therefore wanted a strong aesthetic but, because of the nature of the tenant, they also placed a high priority on security.

To soften the appearance and present, quite literally, a green front, the landscape architects had specified planting in front of the fencing in strategic locations. This gave rise to particular challenges due to the presence of an underground car park, subsurface services and the need for concrete bases for the gates. Fortunately Bowmer + Kirkland’s team was able to work closely with the designers from Procter Contracts to ensure that the planting could be carried out as required. Not only were the concrete bases for the gates sized and located so as to allow the plants to flourish, but the design for the bases also ensured there was no need to disturb the services in the vicinity of the gates.

The main entrance gates for the HMRC building are automated tracked sliding gates. These were designed and manufactured in-house by Procter Contracts, and the company’s own installation team subsequently laid the concrete bases and erected the gates. Fully compliant with all current safety standards and guidance, the gates were CE Marked after commissioning to indicate that they meet the health and safety requirements of the European Machinery Directive and are, in fact, safe. Procter Contracts is a founder member of the Automated Gate Group of the dhf (Door & Hardware Federation), as well as a Gate Safe Aware Installer, and has always been at the forefront of powered gate safety.

As is the norm for Procter Contracts, the gates and support structure were fabricated in steel and finished with a polyester powder coat for an excellent aesthetic and long-lasting, low-maintenance durability. However, an unusual feature of these gates is the cladding. Aluminium composite panels, imported from Germany, feature a printed graphic design and are fixed securely to the gates to present an eye-catching and attractive façade that complements the building and planting. Furthermore, the aluminium panels also benefit from a smooth surface with no handholds, which deters would-be intruders from climbing the gates.

To complement the automated gates, Procter Contracts supplied and installed a set of manually operated bi-folding gates that require very little space when open. Similar to the main gates, these are fabricated from steel, powder coated and clad with printed aluminium composite panels. In addition, the scope of supply included approximately 110 linear metres of all-steel, self-raking balustrade railings, with the same style of panels attached. All of the fencing meets SBD (Secured by Design) standards to provide the necessary level of perimeter security as specified by the developer.

A further challenge met by Procter Contracts during the New Bailey project was the need for city centre working. A busy construction site can quickly become crowded, so the installation of the gates and fencing was planned very carefully in terms of scheduling and onsite working. As a result of the detailed planning that took place in conjunction with Bowmer + Kirkland, the gates and fencing were installed very quickly, thereby minimising the time that Procter Contracts was on site.

Bryan Scriven, Head of Procter Contracts, comments:
“This project ran very smoothly and we relished the challenge of providing something different and exciting. Our in-house design and manufacturing expertise means we are well placed to take on projects that are outside the comfort zone for other gate and fencing companies. Although we have a broad range of standard automated gates of all types – sliding, swing, telescopic and bi-folding – architects often want to create a striking entrance feature by designing bespoke gates, so we can either adapt one of our standard gates or create something from scratch. And in all cases, we use our expertise and experience so the gates provide the required combination of quality, security, aesthetics, safety and value for money.”
For more information about bespoke gates and fencing, go to www.proctercontracts.co.uk. Alternatively, contact Procter Contracts to discuss specific projects by emailing Enquiries@ProcterContracts.co.uk or telephone 0800 294 4177.

Best Preserved, Most Original and Well-Known Golf GTI Mk 1 on the Planet for Auction

An incredibly rare 1979 Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.6 Mk1 Series 1 in museum quality condition with ‘unicorn’ status will go under the hammer with leading online classic car auction house, The Market.

The very early, UK, right hand drive, 4 speed variant has covered less than 17,000 miles from new in the hands of only three registered owners, making it possibly the best preserved, most original and most well-known Golf GTI Mk 1 on the planet.

Originally purchased by its first owner for £5,132.39 in September 1979, the classic VW is expected to sell for between £31,000 and £42,000 when it goes under the hammer with online auctioneer The Market, beginning on 19th March and closing on 25th March.

So famous is this particular car that it even has its own Corgi Vanguards Classics 1:43 scale model, an exact miniature replica of the car itself.

Tristan Judge, director, The Market commented:
“This is possibly the last opportunity that any of us will ever have to own what is still an essentially brand-new, unrestored, reference quality Golf GTI Mk1 – and not just any GTI, but the very purist, earliest model of the car that blazed a trail for everything that came thereafter.”
This particular example, registration ‘ENT 847V’, is well known within enthusiast circles having featured in a number of specialist magazines as well as making two television appearances. The first was ‘The Car’s The Star’, broadcast by the BBC in May 1995, which saw Quentin Willson behind the wheel of “the world’s most complete car”. The car also went on to feature on the BBC’s ‘Clarkson’s Car Years’ in June 2000, in which Jeremy Clarkson names the Golf GTI as “the car of the century.”

Finished in Black with silver and black tartan seats, the car is complete with many original and rare features. These include the small, early-type rear light clusters, non-locking fuel cap, Wolfsburg three spoke steering wheel, genuine Wolfsburg mud flaps, Toric T-76 buckle-less seat belts and golf ball gear knob. The 4 speed gearbox model was only available for three months in late 1979 before the 5 speed gearbox variant was introduced.

Typical of the very earliest models, the car does not have a sunroof, rear fog lamp, radio, aerial or passenger door wing mirror, all of which are staple features today, but expensive options when the Golf was new.

In 2015 the car was treated to recommissioning by renowned Mk1 Golf experts Crazy Quiffs of Wallingford at a cost of over £7,000. This included a strip of the underside of the car and replacement of dampers, brake components and fuel lines to ensure safety.

The engine was also removed for cleaning, the gearbox rebuilt, and the clutch assembly replaced.
“This is a true collector’s car and a genuinely unrepeatable opportunity. It is also road ready. We believe this amazing Golf GTI will be hard fought over when the auction takes place, potentially providing the opportunity to set a new record price for the model,” concluded Tristan.
The car is accompanied by its Volkswagen Historic Vehicle Certificate as well as a brand new in box Corgi scale model and a treasure trove of paperwork including its original bill of sale, original log book, brochure, original VW publicity photos, old MOT certificates, bills, correspondence with the BBC and all its old road tax discs.

HOPPE (UK) joins CAB

Architectural ironmongery manufacturer HOPPE (UK) has joined the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB).

Lisa Nightingale, head of door and window sales at HOPPE (UK), said:
“After attending CAB’s regional members meeting, we’re excited to explore how we can work more closely with the aluminium industry.
“We don’t want to just be a member on a list, we want to be actively involved to help the industry progress. As a member of CAB, HOPPE (UK) is committing to educate specifiers, clients and end users of the features and benefits of aluminium as a sustainable building material while promoting technical excellence in the use of aluminium in door hardware.”
HOPPE (UK) offers a range of aluminium hardware, manufactured using high quality, corrosion-resistant primary compounds.

A particularly popular product for use on aluminium doors is the HOPPE flush lift and slide handle. The product is available in three colours and has been designed to give a smooth, minimalist handle finish suitable for use on 57mm, 67mm and 81mm doors.

By simply turning the lever handle to 180º, the panels lift completely off the track and slide open, quite literally with the push of a finger. The advanced running gear means that the doors are much easier to move, regardless of the weight. The handle makes it possible to move multiple inline panels that weigh up to 440kg each.

To return the door to a stationary position, the handle is used again to lower the panel. The wheels are protected from excessive wear, and the panel weight creates a weather-tight seal.

To find out more about the folding lift and slide handle set visit the HOPPE (UK) website.

Assa Abloy Educate on the Importance of Fire Door Inspections in the Classroom

Door Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, is calling for higher standards of fire door inspections, after concerns surrounding fire safety in education buildings.

Shockingly, there are over 1,000 school fires a year in the UK, costing an average of £2.8m in larger incidents, with one education insurer reporting that the large majority of UK schools are found to have ‘poor’ fire protection systems .

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires schools to undertake risk assessments to identify the general fire precautions needed to safeguard the safety of occupants in case of fire, including their safe means of escape. But with fire protection systems failing time and time again, it is clear that more needs to be done.

Fire doors are one of the most important safety features in a building, and regular inspections are essential to fully ensure health and safety measures are met. Education buildings can present highly specific requirements for fire doorsets, with particularly varied legislation and building regulations surrounding fire doors in schools.

As part of its commitment to fire door safety, Door Group provide a fully comprehensive inspection which can be carried out every three, four, six or 12 months to suit specific requirements.

Following inspections, Door Group then offer detailed reports containing advice and recommendations on necessary improvements, with the knowledge that identifying any potential issues that could impact safety and product performance can be lifesaving.

If any issues do occur, a tailored repair proposal is issued to include anything from replacement doors to a regular maintenance program. Door Group inspectors are BRE-certified and will ensure that all fire doors inspected meet all necessary standards and regulations.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director for Door Group, explains:
“The figures we’re seeing regarding fires in the education sector are terrifying. An education building should be a safe and secure place for students and staff, to work and learn.
“Door Group is committed to making schools, colleges and universities across the UK fire protected. With regular and thorough inspections, we can ensure the compliance and performance of fire doorsets in an effort to improve overall fire safety in the educational environment.”

UK Supermarket Increases Efficiency and Safety of 22 Loading Bays with BID Upgrade

Loading bays and doors are vital in the process of protecting, moving and loading goods. The loading bay is one of the busiest areas in food and drink facilities and must be perfectly designed for productive and efficient operations.

BID Group’s client, one of the largest supermarket retailers in the UK, needed 22 warehouse bays upgrading to meet current health and safety standards, handle the volume of traffic and provide smooth operations. BID Group were on hand to supply and install loading bay equipment to ensure safe movement of goods.

On this major project BID Group installed new dock shelters that provide a seal against the trailer top and sides, to protect perishable goods during loading and unloading and to help prevent the ingress of rain, snow and other weather conditions entering the warehouse and Dock Buffers designed to prevent and reduce impact damage between vehicles and buildings.

Roger McNeal, Technical Sales Manager at BID Group explains:
“Dock shelters and seals protect goods and employees from the elements and keep the correct building temperature controlled while the doors are open for the necessary loading and unloading of goods. There are a multitude of benefits found in creating a seal between the vehicle and loading bay. Hygiene, efficiency, insulation and safety are all instantly improved with a dock shelter. BID dock shelters are compatible with both single and double deck trailers.
“A top airbag assembly that seals on the top of the trailer will further protect goods and personnel from the weather during loading and unloading as the curtains actually make contact with the side and roof of the trailer. This will keep out not only bad weather but also help minimise the loss of cold air from the warehouse.
“Buffers are designed with protection in mind. They are there to prevent and reduce impact damage between vehicles and buildings. A large selection of hard-wearing buffers are available which are easy to install and require minimal maintenance. Additionally, wheel guides can be provided to ensure vehicles are aligned and in the correct position for offloading and loading.
“BID Group ensures that the best cost-effective solutions are recommended with realistic timelines, so that companies can operate from the unit within an arranged programme of works and within a budget.”

BID Group supply and install the most efficient and reliable equipment for loading bays and warehouse facilities. Specialist engineers install, repair and service all types of dock levellers, shelters, airbags, pads, buffers and wheel guides.

For more information contact BID Group on 0870 607 5050, email sales@bidgroup.co.uk or visit www.bidgroup.co.uk .

Bft Automation UK prepares to scale Snowdon in support of colleague

A team of colleagues at Bft Automation, a global distributor and leading manufacturer of automation solutions, are preparing to scale Mount Snowdon in a fundraising effort to support a co-worker who is fighting cancer.

The group of climbers, made up of colleagues from Bft’s Swindon and Manchester offices, launched a JustGiving campaign in December to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support after teammate Andrew Hutchins was diagnosed with Cancer.

The fundraising effort has got off to a promising start, with more than a third of the ambitious £10,000 target already secured from supporters.

Automation Adviser Peter Gansbuehler, who is organising the fundraising campaign, commented:
“Our colleague Andrew Hutchins has been diagnosed with Metastatic Bladder Cancer which has now spread to the lungs and chest lymph nodes.
“Andrew has been a valued colleague for many years and we want to show him our support in his fight and to climb with him in this challenge to conquer Snowdon.”
The 24-strong team have started their training in earnest for the expedition on July 11 - with Andrew leading the way by lifting weights and pushing sleds in the gym.

Other team members will be injecting some fun into the 1,085m climb by donning fancy dress. Warehouse operative Dan Gaw (pictured) has revealed that he is planning to scale the tallest peak in Wales wearing a dinosaur costume!

Last week, Swindon team members hosted a MacMillan coffee morning at an open day, raising an extra £120 towards the target. Leigh Harding (Automation Advisor), who baked cakes and biscuits for the event said:

“We are all doing whatever we can to raise funds, and all these activities take us one step closer to our target.”

Bft Managing Director Kevin Spinks added:
“We are delighted to be raising funds for MacMillan who help so many cancer sufferers and their families with practical and emotional support. The response from our customers and the wider community has been overwhelming. In fact, some of our customers have decided to climb Snowdon alongside the Bft team.
“Anyone wishing to help us reach our target can donate at www.justgiving.com - your support is hugely appreciated.”

Bft Automation design, manufacture and distribute entrance automation technology which controls access for people and vehicles in residential, commercial and urban environments. Its products, ranging from gate motors and barriers through to parking systems and bollards, support safety and security in properties across residential, commercial, education and leisure markets.

Founded in Italy in 1981, Bft Automation opened its first UK branch in 2004 in the north of England. This was followed by a second, southern hub in 2007. While manufacturing remains in Italy, Bft’s distribution hubs, training centres and sales teams are run from the UK.

With full training and technical support on hand, installers can rely on Bft to provide the right products for the job, when and where they need them.

P C Henderson Launch New Range of Flush Pulls and Lock Sets

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, P C Henderson, has launched a new range of flush pulls and lock sets as it experiences increased demand for different styles and finishes.

Available now, the new hardware collection caters for both traditional and contemporary applications and includes a variety of colours, styles and functionality types to choose from.

Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson, commented:
“We’ve sold flush pulls and lock sets for a number of years now but the range was very focused. As the popularity of sliding door hardware in the home has grown, so has the requirement for increased variety. People naturally want their door hardware to complement the surrounding décor”.

The new range includes an innovative door edge pull, perfect for pocket doors, soft closing doors and heavier doors which need a little more leverage. Style options include oval, rectangular, circular or square and finishes includes satin, chrome and a new contemporary matt black finish. A new indicator lock has also been introduced which is ideal for sliding pocket door systems used in bathrooms and en-suites.

“As well as homes, our sliding door hardware goes into a wide range of applications including hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals and office spaces – all which have different requirements for additional hardware. Our new collection ensures there’s an option for virtually any application”, continued Andrew.
P C Henderson has a vast selection of sliding and folding door hardware to choose from, catering for doors weighing between 8kg and 8000kg. The new range of hardware can be viewed at www.pchenderson.com.

Wheeler Dealers Returns to Discovery for a Brand New Series

Experienced car dealer, Mike Brewer and multi-talented mechanic, Ant Anstead, are gearing up to save more motoring classics from the crusher.

Wheeler Dealers sees the automotive world’s finest duo as they set to work restoring classic vehicles to later sell for profit in their LA-based shop. On a tight budget and despite intense challenges, the boys never fail to deliver their creations to a lucky new owner.

This series sees a whole host of iconic cars, such as a 1972 Fiat 124 Spider "survivor" car. The Fiat is all original, but with a driving experience that leaves a lot to be desired, Mike must secure a price that leaves the boys some profit. Mike then hands it over to Ant, who tackles everything from bare metal re-sprays to gearbox swaps to bring the car back to its former glory.

Elsewhere, the boys get their hands on a fifth generation Ford Bronco, a bonafide American icon. It’s a point-and-go vehicle that the market is absolutely red-hot for, but can Mike and Ant get the Bronco ready in time for the biggest car collector auction in the world?

Throughout the series, Mike and Ant will discover and restore a variety of motoring classics including: 1972 Fiat 124 Spider, 1973 Toyota Celica, 2002 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG, 2004 BMW M3, Volvo Amazon 122, Toyota Land Cruiser, 1985 Merkur XR4Ti (aka Ford Sierra), Ford Bronco and a 1982 Porsche 911 SC.

WHEELER DEALERS returns exclusively to Discovery on the 2nd of March at 9pm

Episode 2 – Volvo Amazon 122 – TX: Monday 9th March, 9pm
“The Volvo Amazon 122 is a classic Swedish auto with true rally heritage. Mike travels to the Pacific Northwest, where he has tracked down a true "barn find." Ant is tasked to make it road-worthy before the guys know the true scope of the work ahead.”
Episode 3 – Ford Bronco – TX: Monday 16th March, 9pm
“The fifth-generation Ford Bronco is an American icon. It's go-anywhere vehicle and the market is absolutely red hot. Mike gets his hands dirty preparing the Bronco for the biggest collector car auction in the world, Barrett Jackson.”

“Mike finds a 1972 Fiat 124 Spider "survivor" car. It's all-original, but the driving experience leaves a lot to be desired. Mike gets crafty on the interior while Ant fixes a leaky differential and replaces a carrier bearing and axle seals.”
Episode 5 – Toyota Celica ST – TX: Monday 30th March, 9pm
“The 1973 Toyota Celica was the first generation of the iconic model. Mike finds a powerful solution for a rough-running engine. Meanwhile, Ant is in the workshop putting his fabrication skills to the test.”
Episode 6 – Mercedes Benz E55 AMG – TX: Monday 6th April, 9pm
“The 2002 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG is the pinnacle of luxury and supercar performance. Can Mike find profit in a neglected example as Ant tackles a major service?”
Episode 6 - 1985 Merkur XR4Ti – TX: Monday 13th April, 9pm
“Mike takes a trip down memory lane in a 1985 Merkur XR4Ti, known as a Ford Sierra to the rest of the world. Mike has found a rare competition shell model and Ant applies the European touches that the U.S. market never received.”
Episode 7 – Toyota Land Cruiser – TX: Monday 20th April, 9pm
“The Toyota Land Cruiser can go where very few vehicles can. Mike finds one in fairly good shape, but the original 4-speed transmission holds the car below highway speeds. Mike sources a JDM Toyota 5-speed for Ant to install.”
Episode 8 – Mike’s pride and joy – TX: Monday 27th April, 9pm
“The 1982 Porsche 911 SC. The SC stands for Super Carrera and is apt for this particular classic. The 911 story started way back in 1964, when the current owner was born -- a local car dealer going by the name Mike Brewer.”
