Watch the windows: Eight things which could null your car insurance

Motorists are being warned of the risk of invalidating their car insurance and being asked to check their policies by experts.

The car leasing experts at LeaseCar.uk have highlighted eight ways drivers in the UK can null their insurance without realising.

Reading and understanding the intricacies of car insurance policies is essential as there are several things such as the wrong home address that can invalidate the policy.

Not only can these things void insurance policies and cause an inability to claim – but they can also carry hefty financial penalties and sometimes legal ramifications too.

A spokesperson for LeaseCar.uk said:
“It can be easy to gloss over the terms and conditions of many things, especially your car insurance – but this could in fact put you at risk of invalidating it.
“Small changes to your lifestyle may seem trivial but it is important that you notify your insurance provider as to avoid any charges and be fully covered.
“There are also things to bear in mind whilst driving to ensure that if the unfortunate occurrence of an accident does occur, you can claim.
Misjudging your mileage

When filling out any insurance policy it will ask you to estimate your annual mileage and this needs to be as accurate as possible. Taking your commute as well as your leisure activities into account will provide a semi-accurate number however, it’s best to allow some tolerance for those unexpected trips.

New job

The nature of your occupation has an effect on the price of your car insurance. This is because some jobs such as taxi drivers, food delivery drivers and couriers spend more time on the roads, and are therefore more likely to be involved in a motoring incident. Make sure to be accurate with your job title because even a subtle difference can affect your policy.

Change of address

The location in which you live has an effect on your premium, this is for a variety of reasons including crime and traffic density. By changing your address and not informing your insurer, you could be getting a cheaper premium and this can invalidate your policy.

Looking after the vehicle

Keeping your car roadworthy is important not only for road safety but also to ensure your insurance policy remains valid. MOTs and services should be carried out at regular intervals to keep the policy valid.

Window tints

Any modifications made by you or the previous owner before taking out a policy must be reported to the insurance provider – no matter how small they may be. If the work is yet to be carried out, it is also essential the modifications stay within the legal limit. For example, window tints on side windows must let at least 70% of light through. Any more than this and they become illegal.

Fronting

Parents or older drivers who falsely claim they are the main driver of a vehicle when it is in fact a younger, less experienced driver can in fact render the insurance void. Although this often makes insurance policies cheaper for young drivers, it is also illegal.

Declaration of points

Insurance providers must be aware of any current points on your licence – these usually stay on your licence for four years. If you try to claim on your insurance and the provider finds out you haven’t declared your points (or an incorrect amount) they can refuse to payout. Driving penalties increase the perceived risk on the road, so it’s best to think twice before trying to get a cheap quote.

Commuting

Ensuring you’re covered to drive to work can stop you from getting in trouble with your insurer. Not declaring your car’s class of use can be a serious offence and you won’t be covered by your insurance provider if you were commuting at the time.

DHF’s Timber Doorset Chair Fiona Critchley to present at the FIT show

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that the Chair of the DHF Timber Doorset Group, Fiona Critchley, will be presenting on behalf of the federation at the FIT show, held from 10th – 12th May at Birmingham’s NEC, in Halls 3 & 3a.

The presentation on Standards & Legislation Affecting Flat Entrance Doorsets will take place in the Seminar Theatre on Thursday 12th May from 13:30 – 14:00, including a Q&A session, and will comprise such topics as what to look for on flat entrance doorsets, understanding the Declaration of Performance (DoP), the importance of manufacturers’ maintenance instructions for fire doorsets, and how to view replacement parts when it comes to maintenance of fire doorsets.

The FIT Show is the UK’s only dedicated event for the window, door, flat glass, hardware, and components industry. Taking place across three days, the show welcomes installers and fabricators through to architects and specifiers and attracts 10,000 decision makers who visit the show specifically to purchase the latest windows, doors, glass, hardware & components, garage doors, canopies & awnings, machinery, and tools & lifting equipment.
“We are delighted that Fiona Critchley will be at the FIT Show to discuss the regulatory standards and legislation to be aware of when selecting fire-resisting doorsets,” says DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“Since the Grenfell fire in June 2017, the industry and the public have become much more aware of the safety requirements for high rise residential buildings, such as communal entrances and flat entrances. The presentation will include a discussion of government guidelines and regulations, independent certification such as Secured By Design and third-party fire certification, and other considerations including repairs, glazing and installation.”
Fiona Critchley is Head of Communications for The Gerda Group. With experience spanning more than 15 years in the fire doorset manufacturing sector, she continues to work alongside trade associations and participates in industry groups and technical committees.
“DHF is a long-standing supporter of The Fit Show and is proud to be presenting once again as part of the education programme,” says Patricia. “Although The Fit Show has been absent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are extremely pleased to see it returning to the NEC in Birmingham. We very much look forward to meeting members of DHF exhibiting at the show.”

Placing orders made simple by Hörmann UK

Hörmann have produced a simple, step by step guide illustrating just how easy it is to convert a quotation to an order on their iHAAS online quotation system.

Following on from the Quick Start guide, which was launched in the Autumn of 2021, the new video is available to view on the Hörmann YouTube channel.

Accessed through the Dealer Forum on the Hörmann website, the iHAAS system has been designed and developed to enable users to configure and price any Hörmann garage door, prepare a customer quotation and then convert the quote into an order which can then be automatically sent through to Hörmann for processing.

The 5-minute video takes users through a simple process, showing how an existing quotation is prepared for ordering, with individual dealer prices and the latest product specifications automatically applied to the order ready for each item to be added to the shopping basket.

View the Video here

Orders placed via the iHAAS system are acknowledged and confirmed by email within 15 minutes of placing and then processed in the usual manner by the Hörmann internal sales team.

David O’Mara, Marketing Manager at Hörmann UK comments:

“We are always looking at creating simple systems which help our dealers improve efficiency, with the new iHAAS guide being the latest development. Since the launch of our Quick Step guide more of our dealers have started using the system, saving them time, improving conversion rates and ensuring accuracy.

This new video guide shows just how easy the system is to use and we would encourage our dealers to spend five minutes to find out what benefits iHAAS will bring to their business. At Hörmann, we really are all about making a difference, whether it be innovative products or new services.”

For further information on Hörmann UK’s iHAAS system view the guide at iHAAS - Quote to Order - YouTube or call 01530 516880.

Why Your Front Door Should be Fitted with a Quality Handle as Standard

With an increasing number of door manufacturers fitting Coastal door handles as standard, Neil Jones, Head of Marketing at Coastal spoke to two customers to discover why they standardise on the BLU Range, rather than offering it as an upgrade.

The findings were interesting.

‘Customer A’ told us
“We never skimp on handles as the handle is the main object you touch to open the door. A low cost handle will give our customer a ‘low cost’ impression of our overall door offering. What’s an extra £25 in the grand scheme of things compared to the cost of the door?”
‘Customer B’ responded
“The majority of homeowners who come to us look for attention to detail. We used to offer the BLU Lever Door Handle as an optional upgrade but we found 80% of our customers wanted this better handle, and were more than willing to pay the extra. So we decided to make things simpler for both us and the homeowner by standardising on the BLU Lever Door Handle and increase our door cost by £40.”
“The home of 2022 is all about adding value to the homeowner’s lifestyle. With homeowners spending more time at home, they’re looking for products which bring them easy living, high comfort and an enhanced quality of life. They’re looking for products which combine beautiful design, durability and high performance.” says Neil.

And this comes right down to the finer details such as the hardware fitted to their entrance doors and windows. The hardware is the one thing homeowners all touch, feel and use every time they open their door or window.

It’s why we put so much effort into Research & Development and Product Innovation at Coastal Group. Each door and window hardware product we design and manufacture must enhance and add value to your doors and windows, rather than make them look and feel inferior.” says Loren, MD of Coastal Group.

In addition, recent studies have shown that homeowners are more likely to buy products which they see as being more sustainable. A quality handle which doesn’t have to keep being replaced due to corrosion or failure is a much more sustainable option than 2 or 3 handles needing to be fitted over the lifetime of the door.

Nobody wants a pitted or corroded handle after 6 months on their door. Which is why we make our BLU Hardware range from 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel - to ensure the best protection from corrosion and ensure it brings your doors and windows the best in durability and performance. For your extra peace of mind, the BLU Hardware Range comes with a class-beating Lifetime Guarantee.

So whether your property is on the coast or in a busy city location you can specify and fit Coastal Group’s BLU Range of hardware to your entrance doors and windows knowing that it will look good and perform well for many years to come.

To request a BLU Hardware Brochure, please contact us on sales@coastal-group.com or 01726 871 025 or visit www.coastal-group.com .

World’s Greatest Cars heading to Salon Privé London for Luxury Motoring Festival

More than 150 cars from the world’s greatest manufacturers will be on display at Salon Privé London, which is set to take place from 21-23 April 2022 at Royal Hospital Chelsea. Among them will be the latest models from Bugatti, Maserati and Lamborghini, which will be represented by their prestigious London-based retailer H.R. Owen.

With a history that dates back to 1932, H.R. Owen has long been synonymous with the most sought-after premium car brands, and at Salon Privé London it will be showcasing the new Maserati MC20. The mid-engined, two-seater supercar is the spiritual successor to the famous MC12, and its 3-litre, twin-turbocharged V6 produces 621bhp – enough to propel it to a top speed of 203mph.

Lamborghini London will also be represented on the lawns of Royal Hospital Chelsea, with H.R. Owen presenting the sensational 770bhp Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae. This latest model is the most powerful, naturally aspirated Aventador, Lamborghini has ever produced.

Only 350 coupés and 250 Roadsters will be built as the ultimate development of the Aventador bloodline, and the 220mph hypercar marks the end of an era for the fabled Sant’Agata marque. It will take its place at Salon Privé London alongside the new motorsport-inspired Huracan STO and the latest Urus SUV.

As befitting Salon Privé’s status as one of the world’s most prestigious automotive events, a number of cars will be making their UK debut at Royal Hospital Chelsea, and the very latest models from the likes of Alpine, Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover SVO, Pininfarina and Porsche will be on display.

They will be joined by Hispano Suiza and Genesis, plus British specialists Envisage, Everrati, Jensen Automotive and Overfinch, to provide a line-up that covers everything from reimagined classics to next-generation hypercars and EVs.

At the heart of the event is the unique Concours de Vente, a ground-breaking concept that will feature established dealers from the UK, Europe and further afield presenting 60 of the finest collectors’ cars – all of which will be for sale.

Specialists already confirmed include Barkaways, Dylan Miles, DT Vintage, Ecurie Ecosse, Graeme Hunt Ltd, Howard Wise Cars, Richards of England, RS Williams Ltd, Fiskens, The Classic Motor Hub, Furlonger Specialist Cars, The Octane Collection and Vintage Bentley. It will be a rare opportunity for them to showcase a selection of their most significant consignments in one place.

Salon Privé London promises to be one of the UK’s most exclusive parties, with plenty to see and do in addition to the automotive attractions. The shopping village will host luxury fashion brands including renowned British jewellery designer Boodles.

Everything from Patek Philippe watches to Riva motor boats and Bell helicopters will be on offer, as will the first-class hospitality for which Salon Privé has long been renowned. Pommery Champagne will flow and London Essence cocktail bars will offer exciting cocktails from NoMad, Louie and the Donovan Bar mixologists, with exotic international street-food stalls making Salon Privé London a foodie’s delight.

There’s also the option to enjoy a sumptuous three-course seated luncheon in The Sloane – the event’s exclusive VIP Hospitality Pavilion – while DJs will keep guests entertained into the evening. On the Thursday and Friday, Salon Privé London will be open until 9pm, allowing everyone to soak up the party atmosphere into the dusk.

Director David Bagley said:
‘With more than 150 classics, supercars and luxury models, Salon Privé London promises to be a great automotive celebration where uniquely, everything on the lawn is offered for sale. But there really will be something for everyone because, in addition to the sensational line-up of cars and the Concours de Vente, we’ll have entertainment throughout the day, plenty of opportunities to indulge in a spot of luxury retail therapy, and the very best in international food and drink. Few cities can match London as a place to enjoy a party, and this will be an unforgettable way to open the motoring season.’

Manufacturers of Construction Products urged to start UKCA process now

Manufacturers who have not yet started or completed the UKCA certification process are warned that the 1 January 2023 deadline risks providing a “false sense of comfort” given the time required to successfully conclude the process.

Following the UK officially leaving the EU in December 2020, UKCA certification became mandatory for all new construction products placed on the market in Great Britain as of 1 January 2021 and will be mandatory for all applicable construction products placed on the GB market as of 1 January 2023.

It covers all products that fall within the scope of the UK Construction Products Regulation and Designated Standards and directly replaces CE certification for products placed on the GB market.

UKCA certification can only be issued by an approved body listed on the UK government’s database. As there are only a small number of approved bodies, manufacturers who have not yet started or completed the process may find themselves in a ‘race for space’, according to one of the UK’s leading testing, inspection and certification providers.
“Although a large number of manufacturers have successfully achieved UKCA certification, a sizeable number have not,” said Niresh Somlie, Principal Technical Officer at BM TRADA.
The UKCA certification process is very dependent on the assessment and verification of the constancy of performance (AVCP) level of the product. AVCP information can be found in Annex ZA of the designated standard. For example, products that fall under AVCP Level 1+ and 1 require the involvement of the approved body in sampling and initial type testing (ITT) of the product at an approved laboratory.

Mr Somlie said: “Lead times for sampling and laboratory availability are currently long and are likely to be even longer towards the end of this year. Therefore, the longer the delay in getting the process started, the more likely manufacturers are to be caught up in a race for sampling and test space availability.
“In addition to sampling and testing requirements, products that fall under AVCP Level 1+, 1 and 2+ require a factory production control (FPC) audit. The UKCA certificate can only be issued once the audit of the factory is successfully completed. Once again, audit lead times are currently long and if the certification process is not started now, it is likely that the factory audit will not be completed in time for 1 January 2023.”
Mr Somlie concludes: “Ultimately, while the deadline for achieving certification is 1 January 2023, it could provide a false sense of comfort for manufacturers thinking that they have enough time until the end of the year to get sorted. Leaving any applications until later in the year could result in the certificate not being issued in time. If the product is not UKCA certified on 1 January 2023, it cannot be placed on the GB market. This will have severe implications on business operations and trading capabilities.
“My best advice to any manufacturer who has yet to start the UKCA certification process would be to act now to ensure a smooth certification process in time for 1 January 2023. This will also keep any disruption to an absolute minimum.”

BM TRADA, Element and Warringtonfire are holding a joint webinar on 24 March focusing on UKCA certification and its associated requirements, with a panel of engaged experts on hand to answer any questions.

Ring devices achieve BSI Kitemark

Secured by Design (SBD) member company Ring is pleased to share that their Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), Stick Up Cam Battery, Stick Up Cam Solar, Stick Up Cam Plug-In, and Floodlight Cam Wired Plus products have been awarded certification to the Kitemark™ for Internet of Things (IoT) from BSI (British Standards Institution).

“For more than 100 years, the BSI Kitemark™ has been recognized as a symbol of outstanding quality, safety and trust across a wide range of products and services,” said BSI’s Global Digital Products Director, David Mudd.
“Ring’s certification to The Kitemark for IoT is a promise that best practice cyber security is applied to their Kitemarked products, and a demonstration of their strong commitment to privacy and security.”
Ring commented:“To achieve this accreditation, devices were rigorously tested and exceeded international standards for IoT security and privacy. Ring’s mobile application, product design, manufacturing, and support management processes were also assessed to ensure the high standards of quality are maintained throughout production. These initial and ongoing assessments by trusted external organisations give continued peace of mind that Ring products meet very high standards for safety and reliability.
“At Ring, we design privacy and security deeply into all of our products and services, and we give our customers control of their information while ensuring they can operate the devices with ease and confidence.
“In 2021, we continued to deliver on our commitment to innovating on the privacy and security features we provide. We were one of the first in the smart home industry to offer video End-to-End encryption for our customers. We also added support for authenticator apps to provide an additional layer of security at login. We are excited to continue innovating on behalf of our customers, while keeping security foundational to everything we build and offer”.

Ring holds SBD accreditation for their Floodlight Cam Wired Plus, Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) and Ring Stick Up Cams (3rd Generation).

SBD is the official police security initiative, focused on improving the security of buildings and surrounding areas. Achieving SBD status is an indication that a product has completed rigorous testing and offers a high level of security, and is fully certified by an independent third-party certification body accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Ring is proud to offer the first smart doorbell to achieve both the BSI Kitemark™ and SBD accreditation as they continue their mission to make neighbourhoods safer.
