Super-sized Simply Japanese returning for 2022 on Sunday 24th July

One of Beaulieu’s biggest and best-attended Simply rallies, Simply Japanese, will be returning on Sunday 24th July with a diverse line-up of Japanese cars and motorcycles in the grounds of the National Motor Museum, as part of a huge family day out.

At last year’s show, over 1,000 Japanese cars took their places in the busy show. From the Nissan Skyline, 350Z, 200SX and Cube, to the Toyota Supra, GT4 and MR2, Mazda MX-5 and RX-7, the Subaru Impreza WRX, Honda Civic Type R and even a Honda Acty Kei truck, all manner of marques, models and ages were represented in the line-up, with this year’s show promising to be equally impressive.

From luxury saloons and cheerful camper vans to economy hatchbacks and high-powered performance cars, every Japanese car and motorcycle is invited to join the event, giving owners the perfect opportunity to catch-up, talk cars and admire the varied display, as well as enjoying all of the features of the Beaulieu attraction.

Make sure to head inside the National Motor Museum to see Beaulieu’s 1935 Datsun Type 14 saloon, which marks the beginning of the Japanese motor industry’s rise to global success during the twentieth century. The fascinating Datsun is just one of the objects in the brand new exhibition, The Story of Motoring in 50 Objects, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Motor Museum.

Event-goers can vote for their favourite Japanese car of the show in the People’s Choice Award, with the winner receiving a Beaulieu trophy and an Autoglym prize. Voting is open to all visitors until 1pm that day, with the presentation taking place at 2pm.

Participants are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance at beaulieu.co.uk/events/simply-japanese. Participant tickets, for those driving into the show in a Japanese car or motorcycle to join the display, include entrance to the rest of the Beaulieu attraction.

All other visitors should purchase normal visitor admission tickets, which are available to book at beaulieu.co.uk.

Simply Japanese is just one of the exciting Simply rallies planned for 2022. Simply Mercedes will be taking place on 21st August, followed by Simply BMW on 18th September and Simply British Classics on 25th September. For Beaulieu’s full 2022 event calendar, visit beaulieu.co.uk/events.

Visitor and participant tickets include entrance to all that Beaulieu has to offer, including Bond in Motion – No Time To Die in the National Motor Museum, Little Beaulieu, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, the ancestral Montagu home Palace House, Secret Army Exhibition, 13th century Beaulieu Abbey and the stunning grounds and gardens.

Tim Takes on AliMet Technical Sales Role

Tim Moore has joined AliMet Fabrications as Technical Sales Consultant to help establish new business partnerships and support the delivery of quality products and services.

Tim, from Leicestershire, has a wealth of experience in the door and window industry and should prove a huge asset to AliMet’s client base.

He began his career as an estimator in the 1980s with automatic door supplier Dor-o-matic in his home town of Leamington Spa. He moved into sales, worked with Boon Edam and spent seven years with Horton Automatics.

Tim has also worked for GEZE UK and for the past 17 years, with Axis Entrance Systems, in Northampton. He was a member of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) executive committee for more than 20 years including two as chairman.

His move sees him reunited with two former colleagues: owner Paul Ryan and Managing Director Steve Marshall.
“I first met Steve when I worked at Dor-o-matic and we used to buy aluminium from James Gibbons where he worked at the time. I then went to work for GEZE which Paul and Steve helped establish in the UK. It is nice to be reunited again at AliMet Fabrications,” he said.
The move into the aluminium industry is not a huge leap – many of the companies with which he worked also sold shop fronts and doors, curtain walling and screen work.
“There's a fantastic amount of scope within AliMet to grow the company, its range of products and services. I am looking forward to taking on new challenges and opportunities, do the job with a smile on my face and make an active contribution to the workplace,” he added.
Tim’s knowledge and experience will help him advise customers to find the most suitable and cost effective options to solve problems or apply improvements, combining functionality with aesthetics while being mindful of health and safety and legal considerations.

Outside of work Tim enjoys spending time with his wife and two grown-up children. His passion is rugby union – as a former player and supporter. His son is following his footsteps and looks set to establish a career in the sport.

Said AliMet Managing Director Steve Marshall:
“I am delighted to welcome Tim to the team. His experience will be invaluable in helping AliMet develop and grow its sales but more than that, he is a thoroughly nice chap who will bring something special to the workplace and become a key member of the team.”

Putting Pedestrian Safety First

Since it was introduced in 2013 the European safety standard EN 16005 remains a key standard to be followed to ensure pedestrian safety at automatic doors.

Considered to be a more onerous standard it defines the responsibilities of all those in the construction industry from manufacturer to end user and including architects and contractors.

GEZE UK has revised and updated its popular and informative RIBA-approved CPD Safeguarding Pedestrians from Accidents at Power Operated Doorsets.

The 40-minute seminar looks at the European standard EN 16005 in detail and explains the responsibilities of all involved to ensure safety and compliance at all stages of construction.

It explains everything from activation distances for escape routes and non-escape routes; the danger points of automatic sliding, swing and revolving doors and how safety features such as finger guards and protection leaves can be used to reduce the risk of injury; and looks at revolving doors which are potentially the most dangerous and which received the most significant changes.

It is intended for Chartered members of RIBA but is also suitable for facilities managers, property managers and contractors.

Offering architects and specifiers invaluable advice and guidance, which contributes to their continuing professional development, this updated training seminar gives a better understanding of the standards and regulations surrounding pedestrian safety at automatic doors. The seminar is included in RIBA’s core curriculum: Design, Construction and Technology; Health, Safety and Wellbeing; and Legal, Regulatory and Statutory Compliance for the General Awareness knowledge level.

It can be presented in person or virtually via a variety of online platforms and at a time to suit, usually lunchtime but breakfast seminars or afternoon sessions can be accommodated.

To find out more or to book a CPD seminar, email cpd@geze.com or visit the cpd page on www.geze.co.uk.

National Specification Manager Richard Richardson-Derry said:

“Automatic doors are a machine and just like any machine they can cause harm if not used properly, however we cannot expect pedestrians who may not be so familiar with them to be aware of the potential danger, therefore those of us in the industry need to take responsibility and ensure they are safe for all to use.
This CPD explains how to do just that and that if we all play our part we can limit or even eliminate accidents at pedestrian doors.”
RIBA Chartered Architects are obliged to undertake a minimum of 35 hours a week to maintain their competence. Visit www.architecture.com for more information on those obligations.

Other presentations offered by GEZE UK, include Specifying, Installing and Maintaining Ironmongery for Fire Doors; Designing Effective Natural Heat and Smoke Ventilation; and Removing Barriers to Access.

For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk

Videx Launches New Digital IP Panel Range

A leading manufacturer and supplier in access control and door entry kits, Videx Security, introduced its new vandal-resistant digital IP panel range, the 4514 series.

The 4514 compliments the existing Videx IP system offering a digital call panel which is ideal for larger installations, that’s capable of calling up to 5,000 apartments, making it the access control solution of choice for both private and public sector apartment buildings.

James Gray, National Sales Manager at Videx said:
“Our new digital IP intercom is perfect for those larger installations where there are more apartments than the functional panel is capable of or there is a need for a digital panel with large graphical LCD display and voice annunciation which aid the caller to contact an apartment easily.”
“There is also no set limit to the number of entrances and the system can utilise an existing network structure if required. Also integrated into the panel is a built-in proximity reader allowing up to 10,000 proximity key fobs to be stored and a coded access facility for up to 10,000 codes.”

Available in both a vandal-resistant 4000 series style and full vandal resistant with stainless steel bezel flush back box, the digital panels are manufactured from 316 grade, 2.5mm thick brushed stainless steel and come with the option of an alphanumeric keypad (A-F) or name search and scroll facility keypad (both backlit). Custom-sized panels are also available to offer even more flexibility to the installation.

All models include a large 128x64 pixel graphical LCD display which is backlit blue providing clear visual messages that can be displayed in multiple languages for the user of the system. The integrated H264 camera offers excellent picture quality, especially when used with our 7” touch screen monitors.

The panels can be powered either by POE or a 12Vdc supply. Also available is a Wiegand output (allowing connection to third-party access control systems that also use this protocol) plus a serial RS485 interface for future use with other devices.

Advanced features such as RTSP to stream the video from the camera and HTTP for third-party integration are standard along with full SIP integration (including direct SIP for use without a SIP server) to allow the digital panel to be used with third-party telephone systems and similar scenarios.
James added: “The panel also includes a speech board annunciation that advises the user on the progress of a call, programmable times and settings, and a built in wide-angle H264 colour camera with six white light illumination LEDs that provide the best quality picture in any lighting condition. Features that prove very useful and convenient for local authority, housing associations and private developers where an easy to install customisable solution is required.”

Garador says Goodbye to Plastic

Leading garage door manufacturer, Garador, is taking steps to make its products more environmentally friendly.

Garador’s traditional wrapping system, involving large areas of plastic around each garage door, will be removed from Garador’s full range of up and over garage doors, greatly reducing the amount of plastic waste involved in each delivery.

Managing director of Garador, Neil Discombe, said:
“This is a significant step towards our environmental goals and we are delighted we have now found a way to protect our garage doors during delivery without the need for these large areas of plastic.”
For specific items and requirements, plastic protection can still be requested as an optional extra.

Buy Quality, Buy Once

Sales Director Craig Fox

Not all finger protection devices are made the same – that’s the message from Strand Hardware which is urging customers to apply the “gold standard” for safety and durability.

BS 8613 specifies requirements and test methods for durability, strength and effective function of finger protection. This includes assessment of durability and effectiveness applied to conditions and temperature.

But not all products sold in the UK meet this standard. In recent years, the market has been flooded by cheap imports, many with components that are far from durable. Often made from plastic, they can become brittle and break, becoming a hazard in themselves.

As the UK’s market leader in the supply of quality finger protection, Strand Hardware only stocks products that ‘meet the mark’. All BS 8613 products must clearly bear manufacturers markings and classification – making them easy to identify.

Strand Hardware supplied FP200 finger guards to Lockhart Campus, Stevenston, North Ayrshire, Scotland through its distributor Aspex Scotland Ltd.

Strand Hardware’s Sales Director Craig Fox said:
“None of our stock can be defined as ‘one product fits all’. Our extensive range provides a range of devices for various door materials and applications. We prefer to work closely with customers to provide the ideal solution for their project needs.
“In addition to product durability - some products come with a lifetime guarantee - there are other benefits to buying quality: bespoke sizes for items up to 2500mm and special RAL powder coated finishes for customisation.”
“Often buying choices come down to budget but safety should never be compromised, added Craig. “When it comes to finger protection, don’t be tempted to buy cheap. It makes sense to buy once and buy quality.”

FP200 finger guard

BS EN 8613: 2017 defines finger protection as “a device intended to minimise the risk of crushing injuries to fingers in the gap between the hanging stile of the door leaf and the door frame". In premises that are used by the public - especially children, the elderly or vulnerable adults - retail establishments, schools, hospitals, care homes and health centres it is essential to minimise risk.

When it comes to the development and management of commercial buildings, risk assessment and identification of appropriate solutions is essential.

British and European standards provide specifiers, architects/designers, health and safety professionals and facility managers with guidance as to what works well, what type of devices should be applied to various door sets, what’s durable and essentially, what is safe to use.

It is estimated that between 40,000 and 80,000 accidents occur every year, mainly involving children who trap their fingers in doors, leading to serious injury, and in some cases amputation. Many more minor injuries are believed to go unreported.

The standard is a benchmark to which professionals can refer, fulfilling a duty of care with an understanding of appropriateness and performance values. It also assists manufacturers to design fit-for-purpose products. There are various types of finger protection devices available, some are integrated within the door system, others cover the gap between door and frame.

For more information on finger protection or assistance with specification contact: info@strandhardware.co.uk or call: 01922 639111

Masonite Opens New Exterior Door Manufacturing Facility

A brand-new 136,000-square-foot plant brings Solidor® operations under one roof to increase efficiency, capacity, environmental sustainability and safety.

Composite door manufacturer Solidor has opened a new factory and distribution in Stoke-on-Trent that incorporates the latest in manufacturing technologies and will provide room for future growth.

The facility combines five previous Solidor® production and storage sites into one manufacturing hub and utilises advanced manufacturing automation to improve production and efficiency, product quality and the work experience for employees.

Solidor is part of Masonite International Corporation, a leading global designer, manufacturer, marketer and distributor of interior and exterior doors.

Vicky Philemon, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Masonite Europe, said:
"The opening of this purpose-built facility reinforces Solidor’s position as a leader in the UK’s exterior door manufacturing industry and reaffirms our commitment to the Stoke area as we continue to bring employment and career development opportunities to the local community.
"We are excited about the enhancements the new site will bring for our employees, communities, partners and customers in addition to supporting our future growth plans.”

The interior layout has been optimised to improve material flow and to reduce the need for forklift trucks to enhance safety and reduce emissions. The latter is just one of the ways in which the design has focused on sustainability, with the factory achieving a Planet Mark accreditation.

Planet Mark is a sustainability certification which requires the measurement and reduction of whole-life carbon emissions, engagement of the supply chain and the inclusion of the local community. The development was constructed using responsibly sourced or recycled content materials and includes rainwater harvesting, natural lighting and a building management system to ensure that energy use is fully optimised. In addition, it yields a 17% reduction in embodied carbon compared to a notional baseline.

Masonite employs approximately 280 people at the new plant, with over 85% of the staff living within the local community. Located on Whittle Road, Meir Park, Stoke, the factory is only five miles east of Junction 15 of the M6, providing it with good transport links.

Solidor, one of the United Kingdom’s most recognised manufacturers and suppliers of composite doors, was acquired by Masonite in 2018. Solidor exterior doors are constructed with a solid timber core that is complemented by a variety of innovative design and colour choices to provide the appearance of timber with the benefits of modern, low-maintenance materials.

More information about Solidor is available at solidor.co.uk.

Buyer Beware - Make a Smart Decision with your new EV Smart Charger says Ohme

Drivers buying a new electric vehicle charger after 1 July should ensure it meets the latest regulations, warns multiple award-winning smart charger provider Ohme.

With new Government regulations arriving this week requiring all home and workplace electric car chargers to have smart capability, Ohme is concerned that some non-compliant chargers may still be sold after the 30 June cut-off date by individual sellers outside of official channels.

Ohme Sales Director Stuart Clark explains:

“Retailers are legally bound to only sell smart chargers from 1 July and there are numerous advantages to buying a smart charger such as our Ohme Home Pro, which meets the latest regulations.
“If anyone buying a new EV charger is in doubt, they should check with the manufacturer or retailer and ask to see the Statement of Compliance for the charger which will confirm that it meets the latest regulations.”

The new regulations mean that all smart chargers need to have a data connection to be able to measure and transmit records so that drivers can view their charging history. Drivers should ensure that their new charger meets the new regulations to take advantage of these new functions and for an improved charging experience in the future.

The new regulations are intended to help the National Grid to adapt to the new demands of EVs and encourage drivers towards using smarter tariffs to avoid charging during peak hours. All Ohme Home Pro chargers installed from 1 July will meet the needs of the new regulations.

Ohme’s Home Pro enables drivers to take advantage of all the times of low price charging, not just particular set hours by connecting with the grid in real-time automatically. Using the Ohme app, drivers can set the Home Pro to charge their vehicle when prices drop below a set point. Ohme also allows drivers the option to charge their car with renewable energy generation on the grid is at its highest.

Ohme is the official charger provider for customers on the Motability scheme, the largest UK fleet operator in the UK, and has been named as the Best Electric Charging Point Provider by Business Motoring and voted number one for customer service in Auto Express magazine’s 2022 Driver Power survey.

The Work-Life Hack to Put your Personal Life Back

Balancing the stresses and strains of life can be tricky and many of us suffer due to an out-of-kilter work-life balance.

However, YourBusinessNumber has highlighted one simple technique that can help address this common problem and restore balance both at home and in the workplace.

What is compartmentalisation?

Compartmentalisation is the process of managing multiple concerns, issues, or tasks by learning to focus on one at a time instead of trying to handle everything at once. It applies to handling various objectives in the workplace, but also to the separation of work and personal life. By allowing the brain to focus all of its energy on one issue at a time, without distraction, it’s easier to find success in all aspects of life.

How to properly compartmentalise

Remove distractions

The modern world and workplace are jam-packed with distractions. There is always something waiting to steal our attention, not least our phones and social media accounts. Therefore, the first step toward proper compartmentalisation is to remove all distractions. This means closing unnecessary tabs on our browsers, silencing unimportant phone notifications, turning off the rolling news TV channel, and so on. With distraction removed, the brain is free to zoom in on one particular task at a time.

Keep a structured schedule

A structured schedule is essential for compartmentalisation. Having a routine brings order to our day and can help us decide when and where we need to focus on the most important things we need to do. If we know that each daily task has its own slot booked into our schedule, we can clearly focus on one task at a time instead of worrying about one while trying to work on another.

Separate work and home

It’s vital to leave work at work and avoid bringing it into family or relaxation time. Clearly defining and separating these times of the day is vital and can boost productivity and motivation in both areas of life. It’s about being more present. Present at work, and present at home. They’re equally important and deserve your full attention, one at a time.

Take time to clear your mind

As well as work and family, we need to find time just for ourselves as well. It might feel selfish to crave alone time, but it’s a central part of avoiding mental fatigue. Whether it’s taking a quiet walk or engaging with a favourite hobby, time to ourselves helps us be our best when we’re with others.

Set yourself achievable goals

Setting goals for yourself is the best way of making progress, but they’ve got to be realistic. Small steps are better than giant leaps because they enable you to record successes every day instead of every month or quarter. And small, successful steps always accumulate to result in long, successful journeys. If you set one long-term goal that takes weeks or months to achieve, every individual day can feel sluggish and frustrating. But setting and achieving daily goals means every day is a win and job satisfaction stays strong.

Reward yourself

When you achieve your goals, it’s important to reward yourself. Whether it’s a cold beer or glass of wine at the end of the day or getting away from the desk for a bike ride through the countryside, it works as a reward and a psychological reset, both of which combine to create better mental health.

Avoid all-day isolation

Even though focussing on work is good and remote working is on the rise, constant isolation can weigh heavy on the soul. Make sure you’re talking to other people at various stages of the day, whether that’s taking a tea break with a colleague or housemate, or simply jumping on a video call, it’s good to talk. Not only will it help you stay sane, but it will also help your colleagues stay sane too, all of which boost productivity.

Nurture mental health

All of this advice is leading to one important thing - nurturing good mental health. From good communication to allowing yourself to succeed and maintaining a good work/life balance, it’s all helping you be as productive as possible, boosting motivation in and out of work, and ensuring that each day feels valuable and manageable.

George Lineker, Co-founder of YourBusinessNumber, commented:

“One of the main problems with our constantly connected world is that every separate strand of our lives is entangled. With emails and messages coming through on our personal phones or laptops, we can never really switch off, never really relax, and never really take a break from the fast pace of modern work. Compartmentalisation is a powerful skill that can help manage our stress levels and workload in and out of the workplace, bringing balance and harmony to our lives.
“Furthermore, if all of our tasks and concerns are entangled, there is much more opportunity for mistakes and mishaps to occur - by never truly concentrating on one task at a time and never really taking any time off, we can’t work to our full potential."

Allan Brothers Ltd, reputedly the UK's oldest wood doors and windows manufacturer, has been awarded membership of the Guild of Master Craftsmen in recognition of its excellence in timber craftsmanship.

To receive the prestigious ‘Certificate of Quality and Service', qualifying companies undergo a rigorous assessment to prove that they have earned the right to be called ‘master craftsmen' through the quality of their work, the service they provide and their high standards of customer care.

Founded in 1811, Allan Brothers has a long history of traditional woodworking and specialist joinery skills that have been passed down through generations of craftsmen at its factory in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

These handmaking skills are combined with the efficiencies of a modern streamlined manufacturing operation to produce bespoke timber and aluminium-clad timber windows and doors to the highest performance standards.

"We are delighted to receive the Guild's ‘Certificate of Quality and Service', which is recognised throughout the industry as a badge of modern-day excellence with values of professionalism and integrity that very much align with our own," said Morten Bach Valsted, Managing Director of Allan Brothers Ltd.

Martin Brown, Director of The Guild of Master Craftsmen said:
"The Guild brings together skilled people and companies from across a wide range of trades, services or professions.  By assessing, promoting and supporting excellence in the workmanship of our membership, we help safeguard the interests of the public, giving valuable reassurance to customers. We are pleased to welcome Allan Brothers on board as a member that very much exemplifies the high standards that we seek to promote."
