Hörmann UK support local Christmas Toy Appeal

For over 30 years the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville has been supporting local families at Christmas time with their Christmas Toy Appeal which provides children and young adults with a large sack of toys to open on Christmas day.

As part of its commitment to support local charities, industrial and garage door manufacturer Hörmann UK has donated a wide selection of toys.

The Marlene Reid Centre is a non-profit charity organisation and community hub which provides support to individuals and families within the surrounding area. The Centre provides a foodbank, well-being advice, mental health support, community transport and a place to meet.

Every year they support hundreds of local families with their Christmas Toy Appeal, who are referred to the organisation by agencies working within North-West Leicestershire.

The toys were selected from an Amazon wish list and delivered to the Centre by Bella Kemp and Grace Hopkinson from the Hörmann Marketing team who helped select the charity and coordinate the donation.

New Abus Padlock is Ready for the Future

Lost keys and forgotten combinations are a thing of the past, with the launch of the new ABUS TouchTM 57  biometric padlock. It works with just a touch as a programmed fingerprint unlocks the padlock from any angle, saving hassle, time and replacement costs.

The new ABUS Touch 57 biometric padlock, with its hardened steel shackle and high protection Nano-Protect™ coating, is the latest innovation from ABUS UK.

It recognises up to twenty registered fingerprints from any position with a 360° detection range, so it works from any direction.

The new TouchTM 57  padlock, which is perfect for indoor or outdoor use thanks to its IP 66 & IP 68-level protection which guards against dust and water ingress, will last for years between battery changes with 10,000 openings achieved in lab tests with a standard CR2 battery.

When the battery does need changing there is an SOS warning tone to let users know that it needs replacing while all of the fingerprint data is retained even if the batteries run flat.

It is perfect for low to medium-risk settings including doors, lockers, tool boxes, sheds, and switch boxes.

The hardened steel shackle is not the only security feature that makes the ABUS Touch™ 57 padlock the safe and secure choice: the automatic double ball locking system also ensures high tensile and torsion strength for exceptional attack resistance.

This innovative new padlock is available in sizes 57/45 and 57/50.

Up to twenty different fingerprints of two admins can be stored in the ABUS Touch™ 57 padlock.

This makes the new padlock easy and convenient to use even if it hangs at different angles, particularly on basement doors, lockers or tool boxes, and even if a hasp is attached.

The shackle is spring loaded so the ABUS Touch™ 57 will spring open effortlessly without a struggle no matter the conditions.

The programming process is simple, with encrypted memory, and users can be deleted if and when they no longer require access.

This gives the ABUS Touch™ 57 a clear advantage over traditional keyed or combination padlocks when a user changes - no keys to collect or combinations to change and remember.

Users always have the ABUS Touch™ 57 “key” – their fingerprint - with them so callouts for forgotten or lost keys are a thing of the past, a boon for security managers, facilities managers, and the construction sector.

Because it is waterproof the ABUS Touch™ 57  can be used in a variety of situations like securing tools, assets, materials or training equipment. In residential and commercial applications it is ideal for securing valuables in multi-use areas.

ABUS is a global manufacturer of high quality, innovative security, access & safety solutions with a nearly 100 years’ history of innovation.

ABUS UK is part of a worldwide group of companies that supplies and distributes a huge range of both electronic and mechanical security products and systems for home, mobile security and commercial security.

Innovation in locking: Introducing Cobalt and Cobalt Mini Sideload Locks

Designed and engineered by BQT Solutions to solve two of the biggest issues in electromechanical locking, misalignment and releasing under sideload pressure. Meet the Cobalt and Cobalt mini.

For what application(s) was the lock originally designed and how has it evolved?

The Cobalt and Cobalt mini came about after talking and listening to our distributors and customers who found a gap in the solenoid lock marketplace, specifically around sideload and misalignment.

Traditional solenoids weren’t designed to release under sideload pressure, making them a liability in emergencies. Unaligned doors can wreak havoc on secure access control systems – which is why we designed the Cobalt and Cobalt mini to solve misalignment issues up to 8mm.

Cobalt and the Cobalt mini are low voltage motor-driven door locks for both 90º and 180º swing doors.

They have been designed to secure both single and double-acting doors and are revolutionary because they specifically address the two main issues in door locking - the ability to align a misaligned door and release when requested, even under excessive side load on the door.

How does it solve misalignment and why is this important?

With its innovative design, the Cobalt lock automatically corrects door misalignment of +/-8mm. A common problem with traditional electromechanical locks, on both 90º and 180º swing doors, is the gap is too large for the lock to resecure an entryway.

The Cobalt aligns the door to ensure it closes and locks and sends feedback to an access control panel.

What do you mean by “release under sideload?”

With its patented innovative bolt and strike design, we’ve engineered the Cobalt series to release when requested, even under significant sideload pressure; something traditional electromechanical locks aren’t able to.

For example, on a swing door, pressure could be applied from either side and the lock will still release when needed. Sideload pressure release was initially designed as a safety feature where the lock will release in an emergency.

However, we’ve seen the convenience of this recognised in historic buildings with warped door frames, with weather and brush seals creating pressure and with positive air pressure from industrial air conditioning in commercial buildings.

What specifications and certifications make this lock distinctive in the market?

The Cobalt and Cobalt mini both hold a range of standard compliance and certifications* while exceeding key standards in strength and fire safety.

In addition, the Cobalt and Cobalt mini are both certified for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 4 hours burn time to ensure our locks won’t compromise a fire door’s effectiveness; making it an ideal lock for all high footfall buildings.

What are the ideal applications or markets for this product?

The Cobalt and Cobalt-mini can be used in the majority of applications where there is high footfall usage. Most commonly, we see them used in commercial doors connected to access control systems and in residential, government, healthcare and aviation.

For more information about the cobalt series and to receive a list of local distributors, please visit this website page: https://bqtsolutions.com/product-category/locks/sideload-locks/

Rundum Original Garage Doors Provide Unique Feature in Prestigious Cornish Development

Twin Rundum Original ‘round the corner’ side sliding doors have been manufactured and installed by bespoke garage door specialist Rundum Meir UK as part of the North Quay development in Hayle, Cornwall.

The development by Corinthian Homes on the north Cornish coast is on the edge of an estuary with World Heritage Site status, and is one of the largest building projects of its kind in the South West.

The scheme will create 500 new properties, two cinemas, restaurants, shops, an art gallery and better infrastructure for the fishing community.

Their vision is for North Quay to transform a former industrial area into an exciting new coastal quarter for people to live, work, shop, eat, stay and enjoy the stunning waterside location.

Key to this is high quality design by FCBStudios which has already been independently recognised through the project winning in the 2020 Housing Design Awards.

With the first phase of the project, which includes around 140 dwellings and public realm development, as well as office space and waterside commercial buildings, are two residential units with garages.

In order to make a statement feature of the garage doors, Rundum Meir was approached to explore the potential for twin bespoke doors with radiused corners at their adjacent edge.

This design was perfectly suited to the Rundum Original, which slides along a track as it opens sideways before turning a corner to run along an inner side wall of the garage.

Equally important, however, was the ability to manufacture the garage door in materials that would enable aesthetic goals to be achieved whilst being suitable for the harsh coastal conditions, dominated by an aggressive saline atmosphere.

Rundum Meir was able to use Accoya for the timber slats that make up each of the doors. Accoya is ideal for conditions of this kind, and for meeting the project’s sustainability aims, given its superior durability and FSC accreditation.

Marine grade stainless steel was used to create the U-channels which guide the Rundum Original as it slides, along with the PPC tracks and binding.

This will ensure the key mechanical elements of the two doors have maximum resistance to corrosion for a long design life.

In line with the high specification of all the Corinthian Homes dwellings under construction, the Rundum Meir garage doors are also automated.

A door-mounted motor is activated via a remote control device and it is HomeLink compatible for safe and secure operation from inside a vehicle.

Accoya is just one of the numerous different timbers available for Rundum Original side sliding garage doors.

As every door is bespoke, the creative potential is vast with a high quality construction achieved thanks to the craftsmanship of Rundum Meir’s skilled team.

Multi-Generation Grand Design Slides into Modern Design

A house that was designed and built in the tradition of a Derbyshire longhouse to become home to three generations of a family has made maximum use of space and architectural flexibility using sliding pocket doors from Em-B Solutions.

The stunning home in the Derbyshire hills featured on Grand Designs on Channel Four and was designed by Lomas and Mitchell Architects for Mike and Sarah who wanted to join three generations of their family – parents, grandparents and children – in one unique property.

Architect Jillian Mitchell chose three pocket doors throughout the property, each one offering a solution to a different challenge.

The first, to access the ensuite bathroom in the independent annexe to the house, was chosen to save space in the bedroom that the swing of a conventional door would have taken up.

The timber Em-B pocket door disappears into the wall allowing safe and efficient access to the bathroom without encroaching on the bedroom space.

Sliding doors are a popular choice in independent living settings since they are often easier and more convenient for less able users to use.

Gripping and pressing a lever handle while moving out of the path of a swinging hinged door can be difficult, especially if the user has crutches, a frame or a wheelchair for example.

A sliding pocket door removes many of those obstacles and can help make a home more accessible and easier to use for everyone.

The second sliding door was chosen for its neat, aesthetic appeal, separating the kitchen from the adjacent scullery as the pocket door allows it to be tucked tidily away into a corner.

Pocket sliding doors save room space compared to conventional swing doors: the most common reason why people consider pocket doors.

They save wall space as well as room space so furniture, pictures or storage can be placed on the wall next to a pocket door without the problems associated with a hinged door swinging to obscure, foul or damage it, making the most of every inch in a home.

The third and largest door at the new Derbyshire long house was a 2.4m tall pocket door dividing the informal TV room with the main open plan living space.

This provides a visually appealing acoustic barrier between the two spaces when needed, without permanently breaking the flow of the overall space.

Sliding doors can open up spaces, providing flexibility and adaptability in room planning, instantly converting an open-plan area into two more intimate spaces.

They allow a building’s layout to flow according to the occupants' needs and become 'sliding boundaries', at the same time preserving the spatial uniformity characteristic of a home.

They disappear completely into the walls affording rooms the permeability and transparency of an open space free from barriers, but capable of creating strategic divisions when required.

Architect Jillian Mitchell says:

“We chose to work with Em-B because we have a great relationship with them, we worked closely with Andy Fitzgerald at Em-B: he really knows his stuff and the company has the range and quality of products that we like.”

Em-B is a thriving, well-established architectural ironmonger and supplier of door solutions based in Leeds established in 1966.

The company regularly win awards for its architectural ironmongery schemes on some of the UK’s most prestigious projects, working for household name architects and clients.

Em-B’s success is built on working as a true partner within the construction process from drawing board to installed product and beyond.

Ellard & Marantec: A new partnership on the horizon

As a new year, fast approaches so does one of the biggest changes in the history of Ellard. The Home of Automation is proud to announce a new partnership that will completely overhaul its existing industrial product offering.

The new partnership in question is with that of the highly established and renowned manufacturer, Marantec.

In this exciting time, we are happy to have an announcement from Andreas Schiemann, Marantec CEO, who has expressed the following:

“The times of compartmentalisation providing competitive advantages are now over. Today, thanks to various cooperations, we develop services, products and markets faster and find better solutions for new challenges.

At Marantec we champion openness and cooperation and this is deeply embedded in our way of working and strategy.

Marantec makes decisions for partnerships and cooperations based on European values such as responsibility for partners, colleagues, and the environment.

Therefore, it was only natural to want to cooperate with Ellard and the Indutrade Group.

We recognised early on and in the initial discussions that both groups of companies operate based on the same set of values.

We want to work with nature and with people to create solutions that offer real benefits.

Good cooperation must be cross-departmental and cross-divisional. It goes without saying that everyone must strive to think cooperatively. If a relevant idea or an interesting contact comes up, then it is a matter of sharing.
This must become a completely normal process. Ideally, all colleagues working in a company are in permanent exchange with the cooperation partner.
With Ellard, we can certainly achieve this in the UK and look forward to this strategic collaboration.”

Paul Connor, Ellard’s Managing Director said:
“We are delighted to be working with Marantec, they offer a fantastic range of products but more importantly they share the same values of cooperation, the building of strong long-lasting partnerships, whilst always focusing on achieving a sustainable future.
Ellard’s main philosophy is to innovate and simplify and we believe that with Marantec we can best provide a new product offering that fulfils this promise to our customers”.

Alongside our existing mechanical industrial range, we will now offer a full digital range of operators manufactured by Marantec.

This will include lightweight aluminium cast Direct Drives, High-Speed Door Drives, and Chain and Sectional Door Drives.

In addition to this, we will also be able to offer ATEX-rated motor solutions.

Ellard is also delighted to announce that the new range of digital motors will come as standard with our most powerful control panel, the Promax.

By 2023 this panel will have further development with the addition of a digital display to further simplify diagnostic processes.

Rob Taylor, Ellard’s Sales Director, commented:
“The partnership with Marantec has created a lot of positivity at Ellard.
The quality of the Marantec motor and Promax controls, coupled with Ellard’s excellent service and technical support brings a new dimension to Ellard and shows that we are moving in the right direction”.

 Rob also adds that:

“the Marantec option further expands our already extensive product offering and builds on quality.
The addition of plug and play, digital limits and digital fault display, will reduce time on site for our customers and provide long-term efficiency savings”.

For over two years now, Ellard has been in tune with understanding what it takes to become a company with sustainability at its heart and this has been a major factor for us partnering with the Germany-based brand.

With this move, we are now promoting the near-shoring of our products, which brings down lead times for our customers but also drastically contributes to minimising our scope 3 carbon emissions.

As well as this, we are also working with Marantec to minimise unnecessary packaging to cut down on the overall waste that could be created during the shipping and delivery process.

To welcome the launch of this revolutionary range we will be hosting an open day in January. We welcome you to attend and view the products in our state-of-the-art training facility.

Rob, Sales Director, says:
“The feedback from the market has been positive with many excited by the direction Ellard is going and the additional product offering.
We look forward to welcoming customers to our open day in January, to not only show the products but our impressive facilities and professional teams”

As well as the introduction of our new digital range of motors, Ellard’s purchase process will also be heading in the digital direction.

In 2023 expect to see Ellard’s new website that will make your time spent making an order with us as simple and seamless as possible with the addition of ordering and e-commerce.

On this site, you will be able to see all of your interactions with Ellard in one place with order tracking and account management at your fingertips!

With these modern advancements on the horizon paired with our ever-improving customer-centric service and our new Marantec partnership, Ellard is very excited to see what the coming year will bring.

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions introduces Openings Studio Asset Tagging

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland has introduced an asset tagging functionality for doors developed using its Openings Studio™ Building Information Modelling (BIM) Software, with the first customer project utilising this system now installed.

Openings Studio is a cloud based, custom configuration tool for the creation, visualisation, modification, and management of door openings. The unique BIM application provides access to complete doorset information at all stages from product concept to product care.

The new Openings Studio Mobile App allows users to manage buildings as a holistic system, and design, build and maintain openings for their entire life cycle.

Information stored within the app enables buildings to be safely and effectively designed, constructed and operated, providing a genuine seamless link between design intent during the specification process onto the product in service.

Every door logged in Openings Studio is automatically assigned a unique asset tag, which can be affixed to the door as either a QR code or RFID Tag, enabling direct access to the door details, including installation, inspection, and service history.

The asset tag functionality enables direct access from the Mobile App to information such as product specification, hardware schedule, product information, inspection reports, digital images, and change management tracking.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, explains:
“Dame Judith Hackitt's report outlined the need for a new regulatory framework and an emphasis on the 'golden thread approach', providing transparency of information and an audit trail all the way through the life cycle of a building.
“Openings Studio has been created with this in mind, and our new mobile application and QR code and RFID asset tagging system enables direct access to door details, including installation, inspection and service history, which helps ensure accountability and a holistic approach.”
