National Apprenticeship Week: Expert Tips for Aspiring Apprentices

This week (6-12th February) is National Apprenticeship Week, and to help aspiring trade apprentices, IronmongeryDirect has created an expert guide including everything you need to know before applying.

What’s an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are schemes offered by employers and educational facilities. They offer a combination of on and off the job training to achieve a qualification in the relevant field. You’ll be paid an apprenticeship wage, and will have similar benefits to regular employees – like sick pay and a holiday allowance. You’ll be completing real working hours, and courses usually last between 1 and 5 years.

What can I get an apprenticeship in?

Apprenticeships are available in just about any career choice – and we’ll explain how to find the best apprenticeship for yourself in more detail below. Apprenticeships are particularly popular in trade careers because firsthand experience is usually essential to learning more physical, manual or vocational jobs.

Who can be an apprentice?

If you’re interested in taking the first step towards your dream trade career, you’ll need to know if an apprenticeship is suitable for your circumstances. In the UK, you’ll have to meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for an apprenticeship:

• You’ll need to be at least 16 years old

• You’ll need the right to live and work in England

• You can’t already be in full-time education

• You can’t already have a similar job

However, that’s not all you’ll need for a successful apprenticeship. Apprenticeships require hard work, dedication, constructive criticism and growth. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll have to demonstrate that you’re capable of being professional and working well with an employer. You’ll need to be punctual, making sure you attend work and training on time – both your education provider and employer can terminate your apprenticeship if you’re not able to meet the terms of your contract.

Levels and qualifications

Apprenticeships are often available at different levels, and how much experience or the qualifications you already have will often determine which course is right for you. Here’s some of the common apprentice qualifications you can earn:

Apprenticeship Levels & Qualifications

In some apprenticeships, you might pick up additional qualifications along the way – such as diplomas or first aid courses. If you’re still unsure about which level to go for, you could speak to a college or university providing apprenticeships in your chosen trade for more information.

Pros and cons of apprenticeships

If you’re still wondering whether or not an apprenticeship is for you, we’ve put together some of the most applicable advantages and disadvantages to this kind of program.

Benefits of apprenticeships

• You can earn on the job – with the National Minimum Wage for apprentices’ currently starting at £4.15 – while learning the skills you need to make your apprenticeship a full-time job in the future

• You’ll get first-hand employment experience, and develop your work ethic

• You’ll learn from highly experienced workers within your industry

• You’ll meet new connections and create a professional network

• You’ll leave with a recognised qualification

• Employers and educators will know your experience level, and will provide you with everything you need to learn

• You might be offered full-time employment once your apprenticeship finishes – but this isn’t guaranteed

• You won’t leave with debt from completing the course

Drawbacks of apprenticeships

• The national apprenticeship wage is lower than that of standard workers

• You’ll have to commit to attending at both your workplace and your educational institute

• You might not go to university or college, which could make it difficult if you’d like to swap careers later in life

• Sometimes it can be more difficult to find an apprenticeship than other traditional courses and qualifications

Finding An Apprenticeship

If you’re interested in completing an apprenticeship, there’s an abundance of programs to choose from out there. Pinning down and reviewing apprenticeships can seem overwhelming at first, but here are 3 sure-fire ways to find your next career opportunity.

1. Search online

One of the easiest ways to find an apprenticeship is simply by taking a look online. You can take a look at an abundance of apprenticeships on the government website, or standard job boards like Indeed, Reed and Totaljobs. Here, you’ll be able to find out more about the courses, what’s required for them, and whether or not they’re suitable for you.

2. Speak to an education provider or agency

If you’ve decided on an apprenticeship, you can actually approach a college or university directly to find out what they have to offer. This way you can also choose where you study above all else. You can also ask education providers more about the course, and whether or not it’ll get you moving in the right direction.

3. Contact employers, agencies and recruiters directly

If you already have an idea of where you’d like to work, you can get in touch with employers directly. Plus, direct enquiries demonstrate drive and interest, which can really help you to get a foot in the door. You can also find apprenticeships through recruiters and agencies, who often benefit financially from confirming a place for you.

How To Get an Apprenticeship

Once you’ve found an apprenticeship you’re really interested in, it’s time to get everything sorted for a successful application. Apprentice applications are extremely similar to those of regular employees, but don’t forget – there’s usually plenty of competition.

1. Sort out your CV and cover letter

Firstly, you’ll need a good CV that sums up your experience to date. Make sure you include some information about yourself, your educational history, employment history (if you have one), and details about any previous work experience. You’ll also need to prepare a cover letter to summarise why you’d like to do an apprenticeship in this field, with this employer. If you’re new to CVs and cover letters, there are plenty of online, educational and government-backed advice services to help you.

2. Make an application

While you may have everything down in detail on your CV and cover letter, most apprenticeships will require you to fill out an application form too. You’ll need to carefully answer questions in well written form and represent yourself as the perfect candidate. If you can, have someone else review your application when you’re done to highlight any areas that could do with a little more work – most applications allow you to save your progress to come back later.

3. Interview preparation

If your CV, cover letter and application get you to the interviewing stage, it’s a good idea to get in some interview prep to build your confidence and help you plan good responses. There are plenty of ways to do this – you can look online and find mock questions to answer, or you could even ask someone to interview you a few times as practice. Again, you can find plenty of helpful resources online, from educational facilities, or even employment organisations, like the Job Centre.

TouchKey receives SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation

ERA, one of the UK’s leading home security and fenestration component providers, has been awarded the Secured by Design (SBD) Secure Connected Device accreditation for its new door security solution, TouchKey.

Launched specifically for Internet of Things (IoT) connected products, the unique and recognisable accreditation highlights solutions that have achieved the relevant IoT standards and certifications, including third-party testing and independent certification.

Following independent testing to BSI’s new Smart Residential Locking Device standard, which was developed in conjunction with ERA and combines the BSI IoT Kitemark with TS 621 for mechanical security with smart locking, TouchKey has met the requirements of the SBD’s IoT Device assessment framework.

Ben Penson, Technical, Innovation and Development Director at ERA, said:
“For over 180 years, ERA has designed and manufactured hardware that sets the standard for security. Receiving the SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation for our new TouchKey door security solution reflects our longstanding commitment to third-party testing and certification to ensure we consistently provide customers with the highest possible standards of quality.
“TouchKey presents the next generation in smarter door security. It was therefore crucial that the product was certified to the highest possible standard to provide door manufacturers and their customers with complete peace of mind and confidence in its capabilities.”

Revolutionising keyless entry for timber and composite entrance doors, TouchKey is the only system of its kind to combine five different entry methods into a single door handle. This includes fingerprint access, the smart home app, geolocation technology, voice-activated entry, and manual key override.

Combining a smarter security door handle with an auto-firing multi-point lock and an anti-bump security cylinder, TouchKey delivers the highest standards of dynamic smart technology with mechanical hardware endurance to provide complete security and convenience.

TouchKey is now listed by SBD as a Police Preferred Specification product after meeting the necessary recognised security standards.

The accreditation forms part of SBD’s certification scheme on behalf of the UK Police Service to help consumers make better-informed choices when buying connectable devices and help keep them safe from crime.

Michelle Kradolfer, Internet of Things Technical Officer at Secured by Design, said:
“With the increase in IoT products available and a growing ecosystem of interconnected devices, cyber criminals are targeting and exploiting vulnerabilities of both products and apps, as most are mass-produced without security being a major consideration. Without the appropriate levels of security, any internet-connected device or app is at risk of providing cyber criminals with the ‘key’ in accessing and stealing personal data.
“SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK and we are delighted to award ERA with this accreditation for its TouchKey system.”
2023 marks ERA’s 10th consecutive year of partnership with Secured by Design as part of its commitment to providing window and door manufacturers and their customers with the highest standards of security and service.

For further information on ERA’s new TouchKey solution, visit www.eraeverywhere.com or contact the sales team on 01922 490 000 or email info@eraeverywhere.com.

"Remember Me" Memorial Portico

The Remember Me memorial portico at St Paul’s Cathedral is a physical memorial to all those that died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Entered via the cathedral’s North Transept entrance it is home to the online book of remembrance.

Designed by Caroe Architecture with Connolly Wellingham, the portico is a beautiful, elliptical structure crafted in the UK and featuring several GEZE doors.

As a visitor enters the cathedral from the North Transept they pass through a pair of swing doors powered by GEZE Powerturn automatic swing door operators. These doors take the visitor into the memorial and were chosen as they can open large or heavy doors and offer the flexibility of allowing the doors to be used both manually and automatically due to GEZE’s Smart swing function.

Above the doors, etched into the structure in gold are the words ‘ Remembering all who died as a result of the coronavirus pandemic’.

Once inside the portico, visitors can view the online Remember Me memorial, search for and view the tribute to their loved one, light a candle and take a moment to pause and reflect in this tranquil space. The online book is open to all people, whatever their faith or none.

From the memorial portico, the main entrance into the cathedral is through GEZE’s TSA 325 NT, a manual revolving door with 4 leaves. The revolving door was chosen as it minimises airflow into the cathedral as only one quadrant is open at a time.

To ensure access for all a GEZE Slimdrive SCR curved automatic sliding door was installed opposite the revolving door enabling those who are less able, or people with children in buggies, can still visit the memorial and access the cathedral. The Slimdrive SCR is controlled by wave sensors to ensure the doors only open when requested. This is part of the portico’s design to minimise airflow.

Across all the glass in the doors are beautiful phrases such as ‘we will always remember’ and ‘never forget’.

The Remember Me memorial portico is a poignant tribute to those who died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and is the most significant change to St Paul’s Cathedral in 300 years.

Following the public response to the online memorial, and in partnership with the Daily Mail, over £2 million was raised to give the Remember Me memorial a physical home within the Cathedral.

Said GEZE’s National Specification Manager, Richard Richardson-Derry,

‘We were honoured to play a part in the construction of the Remember Me memorial. The combined challenges of minimising air flow, ensuring equal access and creating a beautiful structure to recognise those lives lost has been successfully achieved’.

Get into the Swing of Things with SOMMER…

Can you imagine watching television without a remote control? It's hard to picture. And yet people still get out of their cars, walk to the yard gate, drudgingly open it, walk back to their car, drive through their gate, get out of their car and then run back to close it all before finally getting back into the car to park it?

Because of this daily early morning hassle, many people simply leave their gate open all the time, allowing anyone to access the property.

As you know there’s a much better way: with modern yard gate operators. A simple press of the button is all that is needed and the gate can fully open and close itself automatically.

These have long been affordable and quick to install, but with the surge of home improvements being planned over the whole Covid period, this has become much more widely considered by the general public.

Sommer has seen a huge surge in popularity of residential swing and sliding gate operators, and many garage door fitters who don’t like to venture too far down the driveway may be missing a trick.

You could easily be maximising your profits by fitting garage doors and gate automation at the same time.

Safety legislation has come on leaps and bounds over the last ten years, ensuring that manufacturers are meeting the legal safety requirements and that fitters have all the information they need to safely install the products.

At SOMMER, safety and accident prevention is the highest priority. Operators such as the Twist range are equipped with dependable technology that complies with applicable standards.

Automatic obstacle recognition guarantees optimal protection, independently reversing when an obstacle is encountered, ensuring that people, animals and vehicles will not be trapped.

All SOMMER gate operators have been meticulously crafted and certified, and extensively tested at their facility, to guarantee longevity and results throughout long term use, regardless of the weather conditions.

Even in the event of a power failure, the easy to use SOMMER emergency release system allows you to manually open (release) and close (lock) the gate in any position.

So what’s stopping people from branching over into gate automation? The truth is, aside from an old fashioned mindset there really is nothing getting in the way of businesses expanding like this, and many businesses are already on board.

Smoothly incorporating gate automation into their repertoire, enabling them to up-sell their customers, cutting deals to automate both their garage doors and their gates at the same time.

The convenience doesn’t stop with the client, SOMMER operators have been thought out to the last detail, ensuring they are easy to install.

Features such as the mains plug allow for testing without an electrician present and immediate use through the temporary power source.

SOMMER have a wide variety of gate operators, from swing gates to sliding gates right through to underground gate operators. Whatever your client needs, they have the answer.

So if you’re not on board already, why not give your SOMMER sales rep a call and see what other products we have that you could be profiting from?

David Beckham’s former Ferrari goes on sale for £110,000

Ferrari fans and Beckham lovers alike can find the car on PistonHeads, the U.K.’s leading premium automotive marketplace1 to research, buy, and sell performance and collectible cars.

An average Spider currently costs around £60,000, however, given the famous former owner and good condition of the vehicle, this is on the market for £110,000.

The Ferrari 360 Spider was owned by Beckham 20 years ago, arguably when he was at the peak of his powers.

Beckham owned the car in the early 2000s - around the time of his iconic free kick against Greece, coinciding with Manchester United winning the 2002-03 Premier League title, and the global icon being awarded an OBE in June 2003.

He then made his big-money move from Manchester United to Real Madrid where he cost the Galácticos approximately £25 million - the equivalent to 227 of his Ferrari 360 Spiders.

Having once been on his ‘D7 DVB’ private reg, Beckham’s Ferrari is now back on an age appropriate Y registration. Chassis number 125058 has seemingly been doted on its entire life, accruing a mere 7,900 miles since 2001.

Regardless of its ownership history, this 360 Spider looks one of the finest examples out there, boasting Challenge-style wheels, a Tubi exhaust and carbon seats, an expensive option when new.

Matt Bird, Deputy Editor or PistonHeads, said:

“The condition, the mileage, and an A-list history makes this one of the more special 360s out there.

“Even those not so interested in the football link, and simply after one of the best Modenas out there, would struggle to do much better.

“And for those that are, what a story you’ll have to tell when someone asks about your Ferrari.”

PistonHeads was acquired in 2019 by CarGurus, a multi-national online automotive marketplace founded by the co-founder of TripAdvisor.

PistonHeads continues to operate as an independent brand, maintaining the site’s popular forums and editorial content, while applying CarGurus’ technology to enhance the purchase and sale experience for U.K. drivers.

The company, which specialises in the fabrication of commercial aluminium doors, windows, shopfronts and screen-work along with pressed metal services, has evolved since its first website was created for its 2019 launch.

The new site - www.alimet.co.uk - has an ultra-modern design, improved navigation/user journey, and better categorisation of services.

It includes a downloads section for customers to obtain technical drawings and data, product brochures and compliance certification.

A news section has also been added for company updates and case studies.

Steve Marshall, Managing Director of AliMet Fabrications said:

“The former iteration of the website was put in place when AliMet’s management team acquired the assets of Midland Glass Solutions.

“Three years on, the company has evolved, our customer base is better established and the range of products and services that we offer has been extended.

“We have a much clearer idea of our markets and growth trajectory and wanted our online presence to represent this while providing a technical infrastructure to support future developments.”

ASSA ABLOY launches comprehensive Specification Manual

Providing the ultimate guide for architects, ASSA ABLOY’s new Door Hardware Specification Manual is now available for customers to download from www.assaabloy.com

The guide is ASSA ABLOY’s most complete specification resource to date, helping architects and specifiers produce detailed and accurate door hardware specifications, aligned with smart construction objectives.

To enable users to navigate their way through the extensive range of products, the Specification Manual offers a solution-led approach, grouping products into cohesive sets across eight categories.

Peter Ashworth, Sales Director – Export & Specification at ASSA ABLOY said:

“Correctly specified door hardware reduces risk in construction—which is essential to managing the end-to-end project lifecycle.

“As construction projects become more and more complex and budgets are increasingly scrutinised, access to ample data is critical to making the right decisions when building.

“That’s why we’re launching our new Specification Manual. Designed to give architects and specifiers all the data they need, it will enable them to specify their projects accurately and in line with budget during the tender process and ultimately ensure both the client and architect can achieve their vision for the building by meeting all security, safety, and design goals.

“Detailed and accurate specifications aided by collaboration with the architect will be vital to achieving the construction industry’s aims of smart and sustainable construction, compliance, and safer buildings.”

DHF supports Government’s latest Reform for Fire Safety

Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) welcome the latest fire safety reform, following the commencement of the Fire Safety Act 2021 in England and Wales, and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022. The Regulations came into force on 23rd January 2023 and were made under Article 24 of the Fire Safety Order 2005.

These reforms are an important step forward in improving fire safety and have been introduced by the government in response to implementing the fire safety recommendations made in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 report.
“The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 which were laid before Parliament on 18th May 2022 are now in force and must be followed as UK legislation,” explains DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
The Regulations strengthen the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, clarifying what should be included in fire risk assessments of multi-occupancy residential buildings, and focuses on two essential fundamentals: the structure and external walls of the building, including cladding, balconies and windows; and all doors between domestic premises and common parts of the building.
“The implications for responsible persons are thus,” continues Patricia, “to focus attention on elements of buildings which some fire risk assessments have previously overlooked. Responsible persons should consider whether a more in-depth assessment of the external walls is required, particularly if their building uses cladding. A competent fire risk assessor can tell you if your building needs this comprehensive treatment or not.
“The new rules primarily apply to high-rise buildings where responsible persons must undertake monthly checks on lifts and other key firefighting equipment intended for use by firefighters, reporting any defects to the Fire & Rescue Service if they cannot be fixed in 24 hours; install information boxes with name and contact details for the responsible person, and a copy of the floor plans, provide building plans to their local Fire & Rescue Service, and keep a secure copy on site; maintain up-to-date information on External Wall Systems, including the design and materials involved, and erect Wayfinding Signage with flat and floor numbers to make the exit routes clear in low light or smoky conditions.”
It is important to note that in residential buildings over 11 metres in height, responsible persons must make quarterly checks on fire doors connecting common parts of the building and make every effort to carry out annual fire door checks of flat entrance doors. However, all multi-occupied residential buildings, regardless of height, must provide Fire Door Information so residents can understand the importance of fire doors, as well as fire safety instructions to residents, including how to report a fire and evacuation strategy information.
“DHF has continually advocated third-party certified complete doorsets and is delighted that this legislation is in place. We urge future Building Safety Directors and Responsible Persons to consult with DHF members that manufacture, supply, and install fire doorsets, and who can offer guidance on the maintenance and repair of all doorsets.
“The checks on fire doorsets must be carried out by a competent person and DHF offers Fire Door Inspection training via its collaboration with BRE. There are a lot of companies offering fire door inspection training, but DHF and BRE have been offering this for many years. Who better to turn to, therefore, than to two well established organisations?” says Patricia.
