W20 Steel Screens Define Spaces in Modern Mansion

A longstanding member of the
Steel Window Association has helped the designers of a luxurious modern mansion delineate and enhance a variety of living and functional spaces using clear and privacy-glazed steel-framed screens throughout the multi-million pound property's main floors.

Cotswold Casements was awarded the contract for the five-bedroom home, which commands spectacular views down a valley, and employs a steel-framed structure with blockwork cladding finished in crisp white render to reference the Art Deco era.

The lower ground floor houses the garage and plant rooms, while the impressive scale main entrance door opens onto a storm lobby sheltered by the first of the 3500mm tall steel screens. Most of the screens feature inset matching pass doors in a RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey polyester powder coat finish.

The ground floor contains all of the bedrooms, where a variety of different-sized W20 screens are glazed with ‘Reeded’ glass front shower areas and toilets. Also on the ground floor are a cinema room and large gymnasium, where a 16-metre-long screen runs the length of the room to separate it from a lounge area.

However, around the first-floor atrium area, Cotswold Casements has facilitated genuine visual creativity. A quadrangle of W20 screens surrounds the top of the central staircase, offering access to the four wings, where the main lounge, kitchen, study and spectacular cantilevered dining room are located.

The Managing Director for Cotswold Casements, Matthew Hahn, commented:
“The property totals some 16,000 square feet and is quite deep plan, so the glazed screens serve not just to offer privacy and separation, but also help to ensure there is ample natural light entering the central parts of the building. The W20 ‘equal leg’ sections are elegant, while many of the screens feature reeded glass which is becoming increasingly popular.
“An acoustic laminate was specified throughout for safety and sound reduction, while most of the pass doors are fitted with magnetic closers for convenience - and the design omitted threshold bars to create level access. Overall, the aesthetic result graces a beautiful new build.”
The homeowner comments:
“We had an outstanding experience with The Cotswold Casement Company. The attention to detail was second to none, and the team worked closely with us throughout the design process to ensure every requirement was met.
“The quality of craftsmanship is simply superb, and the result has truly enhanced the overall design of our home. We couldn’t be happier – the finished product is both beautiful and functional. Highly recommend!”

Rocket Man’s ride rocks up for auction

An Aston Martin once owned by music legend Sir Elton John is due to hit the right note with fans and car enthusiasts when it goes under the hammer on Wednesday 9th April.

H&H Classics is offering the 1995 DB7 for sale at its auction of classic, collector and performance motorcars at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

Sir Elton was the car’s first owner and the original warranty card in his name, along with a copy of its first V5 document, is included.

John Markey, motorcar specialist at H&H Classics, said:
“Sir Elton John clearly has a very good taste in cars as the DB7 is regarded as a modern masterpiece.
“This desirable 5-speed manual transmission example is low mileage and finished in the eye-catching British Racing Green paintwork, so we expect there to be a lot of interest from fans of Sir Elton John and car lovers alike.”
The Rocket Man’s former Aston Martin, which is expected to fetch between £23,000 £27,000, has had just two other subsequent owners and has covered only a mere 14,500 miles from new.

Its enviable specification includes a top-of-the-range Alpine stereo with remote control, a 6-stack CD changer in the boot with a large Alpine V12 amplifier (a non-standard installation to the specification laid down by Sir Elton) and a Motorola car phone in the centre console under the armrest.

It also has heated front seats, cruise control and Aston Martin Stage 1 stainless steel rear exhausts.

John added:

“As well as looking amazing, the DB7 boasts top performance figures and could easily reach over 160mph.
“This is a cosseted example, which means that after 20 years, it is still standing and would be a great addition for enthusiasts wanting to own a car with celebrity appeal.”
All lots will be available to view in person at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, from midday on Tuesday, April 8th, to 9am on Wednesday, April 9th, while the sale commences at 1pm.

Anyone looking to bid on one of the lots can do so in person, online, by telephone or by leaving a commission bid.

For more details about any of the cars or to register to bid, visit www.handh.co.uk.

Alunet Group and its Home Improvement Brands Aquired by Eurocell

Steve Hudson

Alunet Group and its fast growing stable of home improvement brands, has been acquired by Derbyshire based Eurocell - as it builds on its leading position in the UK home improvement market by expanding its residential aluminium systems and composite door offering.

Alunet Group is a UK market leading supplier of luxury aluminium door and window systems, premium solid timber-core doors and a manufacturer of aluminium roller shutter and sectional garage doors.

Its business includes four, innovative, fast growing home improvement brands:

Alunet Systems: An innovative aluminium systems house focused on the residential sector, with a full range of luxury window and door solutions, including bi-fold and sliding patio doors, sold under the Aluna brand

Comp Door: A fast-growing manufacturer of premium solid timber-core composite doors

JDUK: A supplier of premium aluminium garage doors including sectional, side-hinged, entrance and roller door components

UK Doors (Midlands): A fabricator of aluminium roller shutter garage doors

The acquisition of Alunet Group sees its 200-strong team of aluminium residential product and composite door specialists join Eurocell, with its Chief Executive Steve Hudson taking up a position on Eurocell's executive management team.

Talking about what it means for Alunet Group customers and the decision to join Eurocell, Steve said:
“Alunet Group has always been an agile customer-driven business, which is one of the reasons why our brands have grown so quickly. Eurocell’s vision, strategy and values align with what the leadership team at Alunet Group aims to achieve, and we believe that becoming a part of Eurocell’s market-leading manufacturing and distribution capabilities will provide incredible opportunities for both Alunet Group and Eurocell customers. It’s a really exciting moment.”

Eurocell is the leading UK manufacturer, distributor, and recycler of PVC-U windows, doors and building products. With over 200 branches across the UK, Eurocell provides a wide range of products for home renovations and new build projects under a single brand. This includes more than 10,000 products across garden rooms, extensions, decking, fencing, roofing, rainwater, interior and exterior cladding and much more.

The acquisition of Alunet Group marks a key moment in Eurocell’s ambitious five-year strategy to grow the business to £500M in revenue. One of the strategic pillars of this strategy is to cement Eurocell’s position as the trade’s preferred choice in all markets and segments it serves, and the addition of Alunet’s teams, products and services is a significant milestone towards achieving this.

The acquisition enables Eurocell to expand its renowned manufacturing and distribution capabilities with premium quality aluminum window and door profiles, components for the fabrication of residential garage doors and expanded production of solid timber-core composite doors.

It positions Eurocell as a leading composite door supplier, now providing a full range of foam-filled and solid timber-core doors alongside its PVC panel doors. Speaking on its acquisition of Alunet Group, Darren Waters, Chief Executive Officer at Eurocell, celebrates a significant milestone on the road to offering customers of both Eurocell and Alunet Group ‘a complete choice of home improvement products’, he said:
“Alunet Group is an excellent fit for Eurocell. It significantly strengthens our position in aluminium for the residential sector, enhances our composite door offering, and adds a premium range of aluminium garage doors to our portfolio of home improvement products. This gives our trade partners a broader product basket to grow their businesses and vastly more choices for their customers and end-users.

“Alunet Group has grown rapidly since its establishment in 2016 thanks to its expert team. As part of Eurocell, we will leverage its well-established product offering by expanding the routes to market through our strong market positions in new build, trade fabrication and our branch network distribution.”

The Benefits of SBD Secure Homes

The government’s proposals to build 1.5 million homes over the next parliament, has brought about a renewed focus on the importance of building security.

Poor quality housing layout and design, most prevalent in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, has often had  a real and devastating impact upon the people that live within them.

Many developments have been blighted by years of criminal behaviour which has been aided/supported by poor design and doors and windows that were not fit for purpose.

However, when crime prevention is considered from the outset of a build, the benefits are huge, and this is especially the case when it comes to those built to Secured by Design standards.

Secured by Design (SBD) is the official police security initiative that works to improve the security of all buildings and their immediate surroundings to provide safe places to live, work, shop and visit.

It is currently celebrating its 35th year of delivering outstanding crime prevention benefits across a wide range of development types including residential, educational, commercial and mixed use.

The effectiveness of SBD has been academically evaluated several times and each time the findings have been dramatic.

In one study of 3000 local authority homes in Scotland, burglary reductions figures were seen at 91% when compared to near neighbouring developments that were not accredited to the SBD standard.

Working with strategic partners

SBD is delivered by all UK police forces with approximately 200 Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) employed to work with strategic partners, such a local planning authorities and others, to design out crime when designs are still at the drawing board stage.

How much cheaper and effective it is at that point to draw new lines on future planning proposals than it is to see a flawed development built and then a need to introduce expensive and less impactful intervention measures later to counter criminal behaviour who take advantage of the vulnerabilities they find there.

Sadly, this has often been the case in the past as the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund, now in its fifth iteration, confirms.

The Safer Streets Fund (worth £50 million pounds in 2024-25) sees Police and Crime Commissioners submit applications for funding that if granted is then used to provide necessary measures to thwart the criminal who is active within the built environment.

This is often used to purchase products required to augment the security of properties, or improve lighting and CCTV to generate a feeling of improved safety.

With a little forethought and expertise back at that all important drawing board stage - and consideration given to the quality of things such as doors and windows that are being fitted to a property - it is highly likely that the future need for such measures could have been designed out at zero cost.

It is true that crime is an ever moving target.

Keeping pace with new offending behaviour is not easy, but with its close ties to policing, SBD has always been in a good position to provide an appropriate response and adapt to the challenges society faces as the criminals learn their trade and become more skilled.

The advantages of building in accordance with SBD is not purely limited to reducing crime.

A number of academic studies has also found that there are other, and perhaps less obvious benefits too.

Here’s just a few to be aware of:

  • Reduced anti-social behaviour (a huge concern to many individuals and communities)
  • Reduced criminal justice costs (fewer crimes mean less victims of crime but also less offenders to deal with)
  • Increased social cohesion (crime drives communities into a lock-down mentality where everyone is a suspect, this hinders social interaction)
  • Reduced rehousing (SBD estates, because of dramatically reduced crime levels, become places where people want to live, rather than move away from, as is often the case in the rented sector)
  • Better general health (crime and the fear of crime impact our wellbeing, it can lead to a need for medical intervention with missed days from work or school for example)
  • Improved educational achievement (ultimately those missed days at school have an impact)
  • Less carbon (crime generates carbon as can be shown if we think of all those journeys made by police to the scene of a crime and add to this the environmental cost of manufacturing new items to replace those that have been stolen or damages during the crime. In circumstances where a prosecution is made there is also the carbon generated by the judicial process which can be huge)
  • Reduced maintenance (as an example, less broken doors or windows due to less crime means less calls for service. It should also be noted that enhanced security products such as doors and windows utilised within a SBD development, also carry independent endorsement in terms of their fitness for purpose)
  • Reduced insurance premiums (again, fewer crimes means few claims and this equals smaller premiums)
  • Increased property values (areas become places where people want to reside, own, invest in, rather than leave. For example, increased demand for properties always inflates prices)
  • Increased economic output (crime in the UK is a serious fiscal drag on the economy)

This huge building programme is an opportunity we cannot afford to miss – get it right and we can increase the wellbeing and sustainability of our communities for generations to come.

Based at the famous Trollhättan facility in Sweden, the work will help AC Cars meet demand for its AC Cobra GT Roadster and GT Coupe.

In addition to production facilities, the partnership also provides specific engineering functions as the company looks to support further development of its range of vehicles.

Striving to be Scandinavia's leading development company for control systems & electrification, T-engineering is a world-class complete development centre for automotive, and its Swedish site is fully equipped for the development and full-scale testing of vehicles and systems.

T-engineering’s vast experience and skills further strengthen AC Cars’ production and development capability.

In addition to the team, engine laboratories, assembly spaces, and other elements available, the agreement includes access to the T Legacy Track - the well-known test facility in Trollhättan, which provides a wide range of calibration and validation services.

Joining AC Cars’ existing production facility on the UK’s south coast and the engineering division in Germany, the Trollhättan facility is the latest element in producing the company’s cutting-edge sports cars.

Speaking of the announcement, David Conza, CEO of AC Cars, said:

“It’s an honour to be partnering with T-engineering, and the relationship will give AC Cars access to a world-class team and facilities that will not only boost the production of the AC Cobra GT range but also help the development of vehicles going forward.”

Klas Lundgren, CEO of T-engineering, said:

“T-engineering is thrilled to cooperate with AC Cars and is honoured to be able to support the development of its new exciting cars and deliver manufacturing solutions for the future.

”We perfectly complement AC Cars and are convinced this is a fantastic commercial match for the future.”

Speaking of the strategic partnership between AC Cars and T-engineering, Peter Eriksson, Mayor of the City of Trollhättan, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Britain's oldest active vehicle manufacturer, AC Cars, to Trollhättan.

“The partnership between AC Cars and T-engineering is a milestone that confirms that Trollhättan is an attractive location for both the automotive industry and a place for manufacturing companies of the future.

“We’ll contribute to the next chapter in their journey and support their establishment in the Stallbacka Industrial Area.”

The AC Cobra GT Range

Featuring a clean-sheet design, the AC Cobra GT range delivers cutting-edge modern sports cars produced using the latest technology and engineering processes.

Instantly recognisable, these remain faithful to the spirit of the original AC Cobra of the 1960s yet utilise modern drivetrain and control technologies to provide a new level of performance and handling.

Extraordinarily light and with exceptional torsional rigidity, the cars’ highly advanced aluminium chassis are cloaked in a flowing carbon-composite body, while a range of powerful engines delivers the speed and soundtrack respected by sports car fans worldwide.

About AC Cars

The Weller Brothers established what is now Britain’s oldest vehicle manufacturer in 1901, producing cars and motorbikes from their workshop in West Norwood, London.

The nascent company produced its first vehicle in 1903, but the Autocarrier was introduced a year later (from which the name AC was later derived).

This was the first three-wheel commercial delivery vehicle and proved an instant success.

However, the AC Ace cemented the company’s status following its launch in 1953.

With an aluminium body designed and built by Eric George Gray, it gained the respect of racing enthusiasts for its everyday practicality and pace.

This was the car which would evolve to incorporate the Ford V8 and become the AC Cobra of legend.

Over the years, the AC Cobra has endured with its unmistakable shape and unique design.

With production limited and every car built to an exacting standard, it remains reserved for exclusive clientele.

With its facilities in the UK and Germany, AC Cars is working with leading industry suppliers for design, development, and construction, and the AC Cobra GT range heralds a new era in the production of the company’s vehicles.

In addition to its Donington HQ and facility on the south coast, AC Cars will continue to expand its development and production capabilities in the UK and Europe.
