Ryterna Garage Doors offer Tailored Finish Solutions

Garage doors can cover up to 30% of a home's façade – a significant proportion of the building’s front view. A home's facade is like a business card - first impressions count – and therefore curb appeal should be high on the list of priorities when updating the garage door.

That's why it's so important to choose right design, colour and finish of a new garage door, because replacing an old garage door can increase house value by up to 2%. Also it‘s important to match windows, the main entrance door and garage door design and colour so that they co-exist harmoniously.

Georgian design doors still remain the top seller in the industry and they look great in white, golden oak or any other custom colour. But people with style do not want their house to look like all the others in the street – so they tend to look for something really tailor made.

A Choice of Colours
Adapting to high end customers’ demands Ryterna recently launched a new painting workshop packed with the latest technologies. Now each garage door can be painted individually allowing unique one-offs to be produced. Customers can choose almost any colour. Usually the RAL palette is used to ensure uniformity of colour, but Ryterna customers can also choose from other palettes to obtain the desired colour.

Additionally, customers can select matt or gloss finish. Starting from matt Low Sheen (~20% gloss); Eggshell (~40% gloss); Semi Gloss (~60% gloss); up to shining Gloss (~90% gloss). A glossy finish looks extremely good with smooth surface panels design like Ryterna’s Slick, TopRib or MidRib+. The 90% gloss finish surface is so shiny, it works like a mirror. Moreover, smooth surface design panels can be painted in pearl effect (metallic finish) colours if you really want to be different. (place gloss finish door image near this text)

Custom Style Designs
Ryterna also offers a wide range of stainless steel appliqués, starting from a large varied selection of small details and patterns up to customized solutions. Appliqués are made of 0.5mm stainless steel and are glued to the garage door surface. Stainless steel appliqués combined with stainless steel windows and a dark matt panel finish can create stunning effect.

View this article online to see images of all the custom styles and appliqués.

Customers can send in their own drawings to have bespoke designs produced. These designs can be as simple as the house number or a beloved car logo, portrait or any picture. Businesses can use garage doors that face the street to publicise their logo or advertisement. Each individual appliqué is proofed back to the customer for sign-off before production.

Powder Coated Hardware
For customers using their garage for hobbies or to keep an expensive vintage car, Ryterna offers an exclusive option – powder coated hardware. This is the same standard zinc coated tracks, hinges, brackets and bolts with the addition of a powder coated finish. Usually white, but customers can order any other colour from the wide range of powder coat colours available. If you want your garage to look as good as your dining room – this is for you.

All these features combined with made to measure garage doors up to 12 metres wide can fulfill the most demanding customer requirements.

For more information about the Ryterna range of products and how to become a Ryterna dealer please visit www.ryternagaragedoors.co.uk or call their UK Head of Sales, Narimantas Bundza on 0771 9710 525.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra Created as a Tribute to Carroll Shelby

One-of-a-Kind 850-Horsepower 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra Created as a Tribute to Carroll Shelby

  • “Friends of Carroll Shelby” builds a one-of-a-kind 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra to commemorate the late Carroll Shelby
  • In honour of the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra, the new GT500 Cobra sports an 850-horsepower Ford Racing supercharged V8, Shelby American wide-body kit, and is finished in Cobra historical Guardsman Blue/Wimbledon White stripe paint

Friends of Carroll Shelby, including Ford Motor Company, Shelby American, Ford Racing and many others have built a unique 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra as a tribute to the late Carroll Shelby.

Ford is also announcing a renamed road at its Product Development Center in Dearborn, Mich., as a tribute to Shelby as well. Cobra has been the consistent performance label as Shelby worked with Ford for most of the last 60 years, and Shelby was instrumental in the creation of Ford performance vehicles including Cobras, the GT40 and Mustangs since the mid-1960s.

2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra
The unique tribute car was unveiled by Ford Motor Company board member Edsel Ford II, Ford’s group vice president for sales and marketing Jim Farley, and Shelby American president John Luft at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion where Cobra is the marque of show for 2012.

“Even at 89 years of age, Carroll was an inspiration to us all,” says Farley. “This year marks the 50th anniversary of the original Shelby Cobra. The one-off car we have created represents the very idea he had about making the 2013 Shelby GT500 into a true Cobra.”

Using the 662-horsepower 2013 Shelby GT500 as a foundation, “Friends of Carroll” created the one-of-a-kind 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra wide-body Mustang that now generates more than 850 horsepower with the help of a Ford Racing 4.0-litre Whipple supercharger.

Putting that much power to the ground requires plenty of traction, so the 13-inch-wide rear wheels are wrapped in massive 345-section high-performance tyres for extra grip.

Ford Motor Company teamed up with Shelby American for several key components on the Carroll Shelby tribute car. Shelby American provided a specially designed bonnet, new rear wide-body kit, Shelby Wilwood brakes and new 20x13-inch rear and 20x10-inch front wheels. The bodywork is finished in the same Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes that graced so many of the Cobra roadsters built in the 1960s.

“Carroll Shelby changed the performance world forever,” says Luft. “And while he was proud of Shelby American’s achievements, Carroll was far more interested in the next car we would build. You will find the spirit and influence of Carroll Shelby in every future vehicle we build just as you’ll find it in the rear wide-body kit and bonnet integrated into the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra.”

“You might also know that Carroll was a philanthropist, noted for supporting causes that moved him,” adds Farley. “In that spirit, this car will be taken on tour around the country, and hopefully will be used in a special way at the end of its tour – a way Carroll would appreciate.”

Before the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra hits the road, it will be shown at the Ford display in the expo area at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion this weekend.

Carroll Shelby Way
For more than half a century, Carroll Shelby inspired designers and engineers throughout the extended Ford family. As a teenager, Edsel Ford II worked for Shelby doing a variety of jobs including cleaning transmission parts.

Countless engineers crossed paths with Shelby over the years, from those who crafted the original GT40 to those working on the 2013 Shelby GT500. Up until his death, Carroll Shelby remained committed to developing great performance cars. Even at the age of 88, he spent more than five hours driving the most powerful production Mustang ever during engineering validation sessions at Sebring and the Arizona Proving Grounds in late 2011.

During and after test sessions, Carroll spent hours discussing with engineers what he liked and what needed improvement. No one who worked with Carroll will ever forget it, and his lessons in vehicle dynamics will be passed along to coming generations.

Ford product development engineers now will get a daily reminder of Carroll’s way as they traverse the newly renamed Carroll Shelby Way through the heart of the Product Development Center in Dearborn, Mich., to the entrance of the proving ground.

“Sadly, Carroll Shelby is no longer with us, but his spirit lives on with the designers and engineers he interacted with over the years and he will continue to influence Ford performance cars for many years to come,” says Farley.

SAFETY TOPS THE BILL IN MULTIMILLION POUND BUILD

Stringent requirements for fire and acoustic performance were the principal drivers for a multi-million pound public service and leisure hub in the centre of Wigan, leading to the specification of LIG company products throughout.

Following discussions with architects LCE / AStudio, main contractor Morgan Sindall and sub-contractor Parpac, Komfort Workspace’s partitioning systems and Laidlaw Solutions’ handrail & balustrading, and doorsets and ironmongery were specified for The Life Centre in Wigan.

Komfort’s Technical Specification Manager Andrea Glenister worked closely with all parties to meet the spec throughout both sites, which sit on either side of Wigan Town Hall. The agreed solution was to use Komfort’s Komfire 75, Komfire 100 and Polar with Trojan sliding doors. However, the amount of glazing on site, and the fact that it had to be hand manoeuvred into position on each floor of both buildings meant that health and safety was a major consideration and advisors were heavily involved on site.

“Each section of partitioning had to be hand-carried up to the required floor which required thorough risk assessment and substantial health and safety planning in order to work this around the other areas of the build,” said Andrea. “But thanks to a strategic plan we were able to safely install all the partitioning on both sites.”

The south site features a Healthy Living Zone with gym, swimming pool and fitness studio as well as health and wellbeing services, whilst the north contains a neighbourhood zone, library, soft play area and a one-stop shop for public services.

Clare Church, Project Manager from Parpac added:

“The entire installation of Komfort’s products took around 14–16 weeks for both sites. Considering the scale of the build with that much glass, the valuable planning and safety precautions taken prior to installation ensured a smooth execution of works.”

Franz Lorenschitz, Marketing and New Product Development Manager at Komfort added:

“Due to health and safety requirements, and for certification, Komfort had a significant role to play in the supply, delivery and installation of each piece of glass. This meant working closely with everyone on site to minimise risk and complete the installation in good time.”

Similarly, Laidlaw’s role in the project required a bespoke approach for the handrails and balustrades, and doorsets and ironmongery throughout both the north and south buildings. Laidlaw had worked for Morgan Sindall and the architects on a previous project and attended many meetings before the order was placed, with the design managers and architects paying attention to design detail and scope of works.

On special request from the architect, all the doorsets were supplied fully painted and as much work was done offsite as possible in order to retain as much control over the finished appearance as possible. The mortice locks for the doors were also factory-fitted and were delivered on site ready to be installed. Aside from the design, this approach also ensured compliance for fire and acoustic certification. On top this, Laidlaw also had to supply fully post-formed doors for the swimming pool area and provide ironmongery that was resistant to both the effects of both moisture and chlorine.

David Manley, Major Projects Manager said:

“The architect opted for integrated door and ironmongery, which provides a 10 year guarantee and because it was all coming from the same source, procurement was much easier for the contractor. Furthermore, because the architect needed a consistent appearance throughout the site, Laidlaw supplied ironmongery to match the Komfort doors installed in other areas of the build. ”

Dean Rusell, Contracts manager at Laidlaw said:

“This was the biggest project Laidlaw has ever done, we fitted our products to mezzanines, atriums and staircases and had to design specific uprights totalling 1.5 kN due to the nature of the building. We also had to take into account the computer flooring in the building which required a tailored approach and splitting the installation into two stages. In order to make sure all parties involved kept to schedules and deadlines we worked closely with Morgan Sindall and the contractor and it was very much a project where harmonious working was key to completion on time.”

Sunray goes to greater heights and pushes standards - as it extends its range of LPCB rated security doors

New single and double security rated doorsets to SR4 for structural openings of up to 3.075 metres in height and a fire rated high security vision panel for doors to SR4 are just two of the recent additions to the comprehensive range of industrial steel doors and louvre security systems from Ashford, Kent based Sunray, a leading UK manufacturer and installer.

“Architects, builders and their customers increasingly demand ever higher performance security doors and solutions,” stated David Evans, Sunray’s MD.  “So we always strive to push the bounds of functionality and improve security across our entire product range.   We achieve this through our renowned ability of applying innovation, cutting edge technology and attention to detail and then back it up by ensuring that appropriate certification is achieved – which is vital.”

Traditionally, a transom frame and overpanel system has been used for doorsets with high openings but this had the disadvantages of being less cost effective, aesthetically unpleasant and not security rated.  Sunray therefore developed and has just launched a range of single and double doorsets to suit a structural opening of up to 3.075 metres high to the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) security ratings of SR3 and SR4 to the latest issue 7 of LPS 1175.

Similarly, recent developments and rigorous certification testing means that Sunray can now offer a high security vision panel at SR4 with both one and two hour fire rating, in compliance with BS EN 1634.  This is additional to its already popular ‘ExcluDoor 4 MK.2’ doorset range to LPS 1175 issue 7.

Pictured is the ExcluDoor 4 FR double doorset from Sunray with an ExcluGlass panel prior to fire testing to ensure it meets the BS EN 1634 standard for fire resistance and smoke control tests for doors.  For more information please visit www.sunraydoors.co.uk  or call 01233 639039.

UNION, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY UK, has had products installed throughout properties belonging to the Gateshead Housing Company.

Working with Gateshead Council, the non-profit organisation is responsible for the day-to-day management of over 21,000 homes. The Tyne and Wear based housing association, has recently received the top rating of ‘excellent’ from the Audit Commission, with over 7,000 of its homes exceeding Government standards.

As part of a refurbishment project on multi-storey flats in Gateshead, up to 1000 of UNION’s JL224403 escape locks were installed on the entrance door to each flat, as well as Powerload Hinges specified throughout communal areas of the building, providing a functional and durable solution.

Dave Hague from Lloyd Worrall, said:

“This was a large-scale refurbishment project to ensure that Gateshead Housing maintain its high levels of tenant satisfaction and decent homes standards. To guarantee tenant disruption was kept to a minimum and that the refurbishment is delivered on time and in budget, we needed functional and durable architectural hardware – its heritage and experience made UNION the obvious choice.

“Not only has UNION been able to meet with the rigorous demands of the installation schedule, supplying high quantities of its architectural hardware products but it has also delivered a fit for purpose product – increasing tenant safety and helping to meet relevant building standards.”

Barry Harris, Regional Sales Manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, added:

2nd Gate Safety Conference

Event success ensures another step forward for automated gate safety

The automated gate Industry continues to take steps in the right direction following the success of the 2nd Gate Safety Conference (held on the 27th June in Solihull) hosted by ASO Safety Solutions, German manufacturer of gate safety devices.

The 2nd Gate Safety Conference aimed to update and further educate the Industry with legislative & practical guidance on gate safety following the hugely popular inaugural event hosted back in October 2010.

In the period following the last conference, the creation of a new Industry focus group for gates (the Powered Gate Group) within the trade body DHF (Door and Hardware Federation) has accelerated the development of Industry guidance documents and has also provided the correct platform to liaise with enforcement bodies such as the HSE (Health & Safety Executive).

This year's conference gave the opportunity for manufacturers, installers & specifying companies of automated gates to learn more about the on-going legislative requirements for installing & maintaining these products. Practical advice was also given on interpreting the myriad of BS EN Standards which are used to aid with compliance.

The credibility of the event was also boosted by the representation of the HSE itself through Roger Upfold, one of its HM Inspectors, who provided clear and detailed information to the delegates with an excellent presentation.  Another notable guest speaker was Mr Richard Jackson who has also spearheaded awareness of gate safety in commercial organisations and the wider public domain through the Gate Safe Campaign.

Delegates were also informed of similar activities being undertaken outside of the UK, with representation of the US market being provided by Mr Thomas DeSilvia of the Chamberlain Group.

The afternoon period of the event was concluded by members of the Powered Gate Group of the DHF, who provided clear advice to installers who would be using the "guide to gate safety legislation & standards" on its interpretation and use.

The conference was drawn to a close with a final Q & A session in which all of the speakers were invited to the stage to answer questions posed by the event audience. “Today we notice that the participants are very thankful for the support.” said Andreas Holz, Sales Manager UK/Ireland/BeNeLux at ASO Safety Solutions.

Jewers Doors installs tallest ever doors

Jewers Doors has recently lifted into place doors that are 45 metres high at the new Nakilat super yacht facility in Qatar. The UK-based company is a world-leader in designing, manufacturing and installing exceptionally large doors for buildings such as aircraft hangars but these are the tallest doors it has built in its 29-year history.

The new facility is phase 4A of an ongoing development by international construction group, Eversendai Corporation at Nakilat Ship Repair Yard, Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. The super yacht hall is being built for the final outfitting and painting of super yacht hulls as well as for refitting and upgrading super yachts and naval vessels.

Jewers Doors has installed two of its Esavian doors totalling 45.1m high and 69.9m wide. Each door weighs 68 tonnes and three giant cranes where used in the lifting process. Although these are by far the tallest doors Jewers Doors has built and may well be some of the largest sliding doors in the world, in terms of area they are actually smaller than the 582m by 25.85m doors supplied for the Royal Airwing hangar at Dubai International Airport.

It is Jewers Doors' unmatched experience of supplying large doors together with its long history of successful contract completions in the Middle East that helped secure the Nakilat super yacht facility contract.

Esavian Director, Jonathan Jewers, says: "There is definitely a trend towards larger and larger buildings, especially in the aircraft and shipping maintenance and repair sectors. Just a few years ago we were supplying doors 21 metres high and 100 metres wide for aircraft hangars and now dimensions of 28 metres and 240 metres (sometimes multiples of these) are quite common. Together with the increase in size, our Esavian doors now have sophisticated safety and control mechanisms and class-leading 'green' features."

As well as Esavian doors for aircraft hangars and other maintenance buildings of all sizes, Jewers Doors has a world-class Phoenix range of sliding and folding doors ideally suited to everything from fire appliance depots to train and tram workshops and helicopter and microlight hangars. The company also designs bespoke doors to meet particular architectural or operational requirements for a range of projects from a plant room on a roof to the vehicle deck of a ferry. It has clients across the globe.

Jewers Doors is a family-owned business with three brothers as directors – Chris Jewers (Managing Director), Mark Jewers (Phoenix Director) and Jonathan Jewers (Esavian Director). It was started in 1983 by their father, Nigel Jewers, who maintains a keen interest in the engineering side of the business. It now undertakes contracts throughout the world for governments, armed forces and private companies.

BMW Group Classic at the Goodwood Revival 2012.

The Goodwood Revival Festival reels its visitors into the glamour and allure of bygone days like no other historic race event.

Held annually since 1998, it has a unique way of recreating the atmosphere of the 1940s to 1960s and today ranks among the world’s most renowned motor race meetings.

It is also a regular highlight of BMW Group Classic’s calendar: “The Goodwood Revival is the perfect place to bring alive the successful heritage of our brands in an authentic ambience,” says Karl Baumer, Director of BMW Group Classic.

Competing for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy.

This year, BMW Group Classic will be fielding three unusual BMW racing bikes in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy contest. In addition to a BMW RS 54, two race-prepared BMW R 5 pre-war models will be lining up to resurrect BMW’s successful motor sport history on two wheels. Each of the three motorcycles features highlights that represented the state of the art of their time.

For example, the BMW R 5 – which also contested various championship titles in non-racing guise – already boasted valve control with twin camshafts. The legendary BMW RS 54 went further, with two overhead gear-driven camshafts per cylinder. The first post-war BMW racing bike to go on sale swept up several German championship titles and, as a BMW works racing machine, finished as runner-up in the Motorcycle World Championship of 1956.

Strong presence of all BMW Group brands.

The Goodwood Revival will see the BMW Group presenting its brands and their respective heritage in all their diversity. Alongside models from the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce fold, the festival will also include a motorcycle with the Husqvarna badge. A highlight from the company’s days as a leading aero-engine manufacturer, moreover, will be present in the guise of the newly restored Klemm 25 aircraft and its BMW engine.

BMW Group Classic’s garage line-up in the March Motor Works area, meanwhile, will be consistently sporting 1950s and 1960s attire. The BMW and Rolls-Royce brands will display the BMW 507, BMW 503 and BMW Isetta, along with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, to lure visitors into the world of British
showrooms of that era.

MINI will evoke 1960s London with Peter Sellers’ classic Mini, while BMW Motorrad will be offering a garage for the true enthusiast with motorcycles such as the BMW R 24, BMW R 26, BMW R 51/2 with sidecar, and the BMW R 69 S. Likewise parked in the motorcycle garage will be the Husqvarna CR 400 with which Steve McQueen ventured beyond the tarmac.

On show outside the four BMW Group garages will be a rather special highlight – the BMW 328 in which Sir Stirling Moss won his first car race.

A further attraction at the airfield will be the Klemm 25 aircraft of 1927 powered by a BMW Xa aero-engine, which will be taking part in the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation competition. The 5-cylinder radial engine with 60 hp output has been deployed since 1937 and, along with the aircraft, has undergone a full restoration.
