Carl F Groupco’s Despatch Developments

Tim Groves is shown (left) with Richard Booth

racking accommodating 200 door bolt options.

Investment in new despatch facilities at Carl F Groupco supports the hardware supplier’s commitment to service. The established distributor has accommodated over 200 door bolt options in new racking that doubles the size of its locking product storage capability and enhances selection.

The services of Link51, a leading storage solution company, were used to design racking specifically to meet Carl F Groupco’s needs – this included the challenge of many lock systems exceeding two metres.

The special racking commissioned by Carl F Groupco resulted from a comprehensive site-survey and design: the result was a solution that covers the same footprint as the previous storage system but extends to eight metres in height to cater for the company’s extensive product range.

Investment is set to continue in despatch services with robotic pallet wrapping technology due to be purchased which will increase the speed of packing and cater for the company’s wide range of shipping requirements.

Stunning Apeer-Rance

Front doors get the ‘designer treatment’ with a stunning collection of contemporary styles from the makers of the most advanced home entrance systems on the market.

The Modern Door (MODO) collection from Apeer is a design-led portfolio of contemporary doors, featuring distinctive stainless steel glazing trims. The understated and sleek designs are enhanced by a choice of modern glass artwork with the fused tiles, bevels and sandblasted glass designs all created by hand at Apeer’s in-house glass studio.

Offering a 10-year structural guarantee, the Apeer MODO collection is a double rebate, composite door with a grained finish. It means that, unlike solid timber doors, they don’t twist or warp and end up being cold and drafty. And they are much more thermally efficient than standard uPVC panel doors which tend to have a low grade polystyrene insulation and so transfer heat from within the home.

The MODO collection also offers one of the most secure designs on the market, featuring some of the best locking systems available along with a choice of handles and other accessories.

Apeer can also customise to any BS or RAL colour and offers the option to have a different colour on the inside of the door to that on the outside.

Widely regarded as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of domestic front doors, other features of the MODO collection include:

  • Toughened, 60mm thick warm edge, triple glazed units as standard
  • Apeer doors were among the first to be Energy ‘A’ rated
  • Apeer doors are ‘Secure By Design’ and feature a Kitemarked cylinder, multi-point locking system and steel dog bolts, AV2 Heritage slam lock OR standard lever handles plus a choice of five bar pull handles with AV2 lock
  • Timber effect fibreglass door leaf for hassle-free maintenance
  • All door and entrance glass is BSI Kitemarked

New Williams Advanced Engineering Facility Opened by Prime Minister David Cameron

Prime Minister David Cameron has officially opened Williams’ new Advanced Engineering facility on Friday in Grove, Oxfordshire. The Prime Minister was joined at the launch by Williams Team Principal Sir Frank Williams, Group CEO Mike O’Driscoll and Williams Advanced Engineering Managing Director, Craig Wilson.

A dedicated 3,800m sq. building located on the same site as the WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING Formula One team, the new Advanced Engineering facility is the result of £8m of investment by Williams over the last two years. The facility is a state-of-the-art site R&D site that features a groundfloor workshop with Formula One-inspired build bays that can be used for one-off projects or low-volume production. The facility will accommodate up to 250 design engineers and also features a number of confidential rooms where projects can be worked on in complete secrecy – vital given the nature of Williams Advanced Engineering’s client base.

The aim of Williams Advanced Engineering is simple: to use the technology, know-how and rapid development skills honed in Formula One to deliver cutting edge technology solutions to the automotive, motorsport, transport and energy sectors. The company specialises in delivering energy efficient performance for its clients and does this in four key areas: hybrid power systems and electronics, dynamics, advanced lightweight materials and cutting edge aerodynamics. This expertise in energy efficient technologies first began with the hybridisation of Formula One cars in 2009, with Williams becoming the only team to develop its hybrid technologies entirely in house.

Although Friday marked the opening of the new Williams Advanced Engineering building, the business has been operating since 2011. Its first project was the Jaguar C-X75, one of the most sophisticated hybrid supercars ever made. The company is also collaborating with Nissan on its high performance NISMO products, and is the sole supplier of the batteries that will power the cars competing in Formula E, the world’s first fully electric racing series. The company is expanding its operations into the energy sector and is currently working on a project to install Formula One-derived flywheel energy storage technology on energy grids in the Scottish highlands in a project backed by the government’s Department for Energy and Climate Change.

Speaking at the launch of Williams Advanced Engineering’s new facility the Prime Minister David Cameron said:
“Formula One is a world beating, hi-tech industry and I am very proud that Britain and British engineers and designers play such a key role within it. Williams opening their Advanced Engineering facility in Oxfordshire is great news for the local area and a vote of confidence in our long-term economic plan to back business, create jobs and secure a better future for Britain.”

Mike O’Driscoll, Group CEO of Williams, added:
“We are honoured to have the Prime Minister here today to join us at the start of an extremely exciting time for Williams Advanced Engineering. This new state-of-the-art building gives our talented and diverse skills base a home and provides capacity for 250 designers, engineers and technicians. Williams’ diversification programme has achieved much over the past few years and from here I expect Williams Advanced Engineering to make rapid progress. Improving energy efficiency is an important global concern and we are confident that Williams has the unique know-how and resources to play an important role in tackling this issue.”

About Williams Advanced Engineering

Williams Advanced Engineering is the technology and engineering services business of the Williams group of companies that includes the world famous WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING Formula One team.

Williams Advanced Engineering provides world-class technical innovation, engineering, testing, and manufacturing services to deliver energy efficient performance to the automotive, motorsport, transport and energy sectors. The company specialises in advanced lightweight materials, hybrid power systems and electronics, cutting edge aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, and holistic integration capabilities.

Working in close collaboration with its customers and partners, Williams Advanced Engineering creates energy efficient performance to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st Century.

Assa Abloy Security Solutions Announce Dedicated Trade Focus

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions has appointed a new Managing Director as it announces its decision to focus solely on trade customers.

Eryl Jones has been appointed to the role of Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, with his predecessor David Wigglesworth heading up the new specification division of ASSA ABLOY UK.

In the year that the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, the announcement from ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions comes at a time of change for the midlands-based manufacturer.

The restructure of the Security Solutions division, which includes Adams Rite, ASSA, Trimec® and UNION is designed to continue to build on the success of the well-known product brands.

Under the leadership of Eryl, whose previous position as Commercial Manager at ASSA ABLOY has provided him with extensive experience and knowledge of the trade sector including builders’ merchants, OEM, architectural ironmongers and locksmith channels, the team will now have increased focus on developing its relationships and offering for the trade.

Speaking on his appointment, Eryl said:
“Traditionally ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions has always had a very strong product portfolio, with heritage brands such as UNION and industry leaders like Adams Rite. Over recent years we have been adapting to the increase in projects requiring a total solution, leveraging the combined strength of all our brands and products. We considered the time was right to create a separate specification offering and division where this market could be fully explored.

“Consequently, its creation has led to a renewed focus on our core trade customers. As a division we will now solely be working with our trade customers and one of the things I’m keen to progress in my role as Managing Director is realising the full potential of our brands and defining a product portfolio that helps our customers win business in new markets and create new revenue streams.

“We will continue to work closely with the specification division to deliver the best service and value for our customers, and I am personally looking forward to exploring new opportunities with our trade customers.”

For further information on the new team structure at ASSA ABLOY or its product range, please visit www.assaabloy.co.uk/securitysolutions or tweet @ASSAABLOYUKLtd

Leicester company in court after child’s head trapped in electric gate

A Leicester company has been prosecuted for failing to install adequate guarding on an electric gate that trapped a young child at a primary school in Stourbridge.

Dudley Magistrates’ Court yesterday (10th July) heard that on 25 September 2012, an eight-year-old boy was injured when his head became trapped between the edge of the closing gate and the gate post. The youngster suffered significant bruising to the right side of his head and ear.

His father, who witnessed the incident, tried desperately to hold the gate to stop it closing further and managed to pulled it open enough to release his son’s head.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the entrance gate at Pedmore Primary School had been automated by Access Control Solutions (UK) Ltd but the company had failed to fit suitable guarding.

The company had identified the need for the guarding but not fitted it because the gate, which had been manufactured by a different company, was not the exact style expected and the guarding would not fit.

Access Control Solutions (UK) Ltd, of Boston Road, Leicester, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 18 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and was fined £3,300 with £773 costs.

After the hearing HSE inspector Sarah Palfreyman said:
“This was an extremely traumatic event for the boy and his father. Fortunately, the youngster was back at school a couple of days later and he has not suffered any long term effects. However, it could have been a different story had he been trapped by a different part of his head, or had it happened to a younger child.

“The incident was entirely preventable. Access Control Solutions identified the need for the guard in their own job specification but when the gate arrived, it was not the type expected the guard did not fit. At this point they should have either come up with an alternative or postponed the job until the problem was rectified, especially as they were fully aware that the entrance would be used by a particularly vulnerable group – young children.

“People getting trapped a well-known risk in the industry and HSE has produced safety notes on the subject due to a number of fatalities involving children in recent years. I would encourage all suppliers and installers of electric gates to read it.”

The boy’s father said:
“I had gone to collect him from the after school activity club and he ran towards the gate, which was still open. I told him to stop and wait for me and as he did I saw the gate was closing and was touching his shoulders. Realising the danger I leapt to the gate but by then it was on his head and he was screaming.

“I was pulling it with all my strength. It nearly beat me but managed to pull it enough to get his head out.

“It shook the whole family. My son talks about it now and again. He thinks it was his fault, that he did something wrong. That upsets me as much as the incident itself.”

Guidance of the installation of electrically powered gates and the risks to pedestrians is available at www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/electricgates2.htm

Combat Doors specifies Interleaf Hinges from Cooke Brothers

Manchester based Combat Doors, one of the leading specialists in the manufacture and installation of commercial entrance door systems, reports on a recently completed contract for one of the UK’s largest housing associations in Tameside, Greater Manchester.

The £250k + contract involved Combat in replacing worn out access points throughout Tameside with bespoke high performance communal Aluminium entrance door systems. This highly skilled work required specialist hinges to meet the exacting specifications of the contract. On recommendation by leading systems company Kestrel Aluminium, Combat contacted Master Hinge Makers, Cooke Brothers for a solution.

After considering the wide choice of hinge options in the company’s Phoenix hinge range, the product that fully met the contract specifications was the Interleaf Stainless Steel Continuous hinge.

Designed to provide an ultra-narrow unobtrusive sightline between the door and frame the new Phoenix Interleaf hinge reduces the typical gap created by a traditional heavy duty continuous hinge from 12mm down to a mere 3mm, whilst the aesthetical lines of the Interleaf hinge completely fill the void between the door and frame, reducing the risk of finger trapping considerably. The new CE marked Interleaf hinges incorporate the Phoenix high performance maintenance free polymer bearings and have been successfully tested to BS EN 1935: Grade 14 (160kg) and are CERTIFIRE approved for use on fire doors.

Commenting on the choice of Interleaf hinges Mike Ankers, Director of Combat Doors said:
“From the outset we were impressed with the design and quality of the Interleaf hinges and the product certainly proved to be the perfect solution to meet this demanding specification. The team from Cooke Brothers couldn’t have been more helpful both for their advice and in meeting the delivery deadlines set by our client. We will definitely recommend Cooke’s to others and use their products on future contracts”.
Well established Combat Doors specialises in complete door systems for retail, commercial and industrial properties including retail outlets, factories, offices, schools, colleges and hospitals. They provide a complete custom design and manufacturing commercial door service throughout the UK, including for many high street names. The company’s two directors Mike Ankers and Kevin Blease and their highly skilled team of engineers provide a wealth of experience based on dedicated customer services and high quality products.
