Major DHF Initiative Ensures Safe Gates Save Lives

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has launched and published a new industry code of practice which is designed to reduce the safety risks associated with powered gates and traffic barriers to as low as is reasonably practicable.

The Code of Practice for the Design, Manufacture, Installation and Maintenance of Powered Gates and Traffic Barriers (DHF TS 011:2016) is the 11th in a series of widely respected DHF technical specifications covering the range of industry sectors represented by DHF and is available as a free download from www.dhfonline.org.uk/publications-gates-automation.aspx .

The aim of DHF TS 011:2016 is to give installers, maintainers and owners of powered gates and barriers - and all adherents to the code of practice - a framework to ensure a gate is safe and therefore complies with the law. The new code draws on safety legislation, European standards, and industry best practice.

It sets out the legal and technical requirements for all aspects of powered gate and traffic barrier work. It has condensed and refined information from numerous pieces of European and UK criminal law and over 20 European and British standards in order to provide a precise and clear reference for gate and barrier work. This negates the complexity and confusion often caused when attempting to apply information from multi-discipline standards and legislation.

The code leans heavily on the requirements for competence and training at all levels in the process. Every gate repair, maintenance procedure or installation will need to have been executed or supervised by someone qualified in the DHF Powered Gate Safety Diploma training scheme.

This is to ensure continuity of standards across the entire survey, specification, procurement, fabrication, installation, commissioning and documentation of every powered gate installation, repair or maintenance activity.

It is expected that DHF TS 011:2016 will become the benchmark industry reference document setting the standard for owner and installer stakeholders alike. It will end the current, often confusing, situation within the industry caused by conflicting interpretations of the current standards and many apparent grey areas.

Owner and client stakeholders will be able to demand that gate and barrier works are delivered in accordance with the code. Service providers will be able to assure clients that their work is delivered in accordance with the document so protecting the criminal and civil liabilities of all parties concerned.

The new code is the culmination of efforts to raise safety levels in the industry by the DHF Powered Gate Group, which represents Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates, barriers and gate automation equipment. The group was formed in 2010 following the tragic and unnecessary deaths of two young children in that year.

Said DHF training officer Nick Perkins:
"Tragically, poorly installed and badly maintained gates and barriers have caused 12 deaths and many reported and unreported accidents involving serious injury since 2005. It’s estimated that only 30% of the 500,000 automated gates in service in the UK are safe to use. As an industry we find this completely unacceptable. We’re absolutely determined to do everything we can to ensure no more tragic accidents happen. This new DHF code of practice, backed up by the comprehensive DHF safety training scheme, will help achieve the industry’s ultimate aim of confining powered gate and barrier accidents to the history books."

Hörmann takes centre stage in car showrooms across the country

Leicestershire garage and industrial door manufacturer Hörmann has seen its number of installations for car dealerships double since 2012.

Over the past few years, more and more companies in the auto sector such as BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Kia, Peugeot, Porsche and Mercedes have been approaching Hörmann with requests for its doors for their new UK showrooms and service centres.

This increase in demand for new or improved showrooms may be due to the fact that the number of UK new car sales has returned to its pre-economic downturn level. In total, 2.63 million new vehicles were registered last year, the best annual performance to date following four years of consecutive growth.

With health and safety planning and thermal efficiency now at the forefront of design, building professionals are under increasing pressure to select doors that achieve the best possible insulation values without compromising on style, security or ease of use.

Taking all of this into account, Hörmann’s sectional doors are proving to be a popular choice. These doors not only aesthetically match the high-end specification of car showrooms, but also provide excellent insulation values. In addition, they are among the safest doors on the market even with an opening speed of up to 2.5m/s.

One project that was completed last year was the brand new, state of the art showroom for Jaguar and Land Rover in Stockport, where 14 of Hörmann’s HS 7030 PU high-speed doors have been installed. The door’s energy saving insulated panels glide smoothly and quickly into a spiral bracket, without contact, thanks to their chain mechanisms with spring compensation. Another benefit of the design means that the door requires less fitting space than traditional combi-doors.

Tom Langley, projects director at Hörmann, comments:
“It’s great to see that we’re now recognised as a leading manufacturer and supplier for this industry and have so many new customers coming aboard. We’re confident that this growth is down to our class-leading sectional door range and are looking forward to the upcoming projects this year.”

Murray’s Magnificent Machines at first Beaulieu Supercar Weekend

The iconic voice of Formula One motorsport Murray Walker OBE will be the first celebrity honoured with a special tribute collection at the new Beaulieu Supercar Weekend on August 20th and 21st.

Murray’s Magnificent Machines will feature some of his favourite cars and motorcycles from half a century of F1, race and rally in a stunning setting on the lawns of Palace House, which has been home to the Montagu family since 1538.

The veteran commentator will talk about his chosen collection and career highlights in conversation with racing driver and TV presenter Tiff Needell at a Saturday night Gala Evening. The talk will be followed by an exclusive evening of live music and fireworks. Tickets to this very special Gala Evening are now on sale as part of the VIP experience.

Beaulieu Managing Director Russell Bowman said: “We are delighted that Murray has accepted Lord Montagu’s invitation to be part of our first Beaulieu Supercar Weekend. Not only is Murray a motor racing icon but he has a long history with Beaulieu, which makes it natural that we pay tribute to him at this special event.”

The high octane Beaulieu Supercar Weekend will be the first event to run under a strategic new partnership between Beaulieu Enterprises and Brand Events.

Building on the popularity of Beaulieu’s Supercar Showdown, which has run as a one-day event in the parkland of the National Motor Museum for the last five years, it will offer a spectacular range of new features, making it the must-visit supercar event for 2016.

Highlights include:

o An eye-catching display of more than 350 supercars set against the stunning backdrop of the Beaulieu parkland for a two-day celebration of the supercar, its icons, its history and its future.

o Supercar to Race Car will trace the exotic origins of our modern GT race cars and the influence of the track on today’s everyday supercars.

o Ferruccio Lamborghini: 100 Years will honour the man who brought us many of the most memorable supercars ever made and celebrate in appropriately flamboyant style the centenary of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s birth.

o The Hypercar Holy Trinity blends heart-stopping looks with pulse-racing performance and brings together the undisputed kings of the modern supercar class – the Porsche 918, the Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1.

o The Super-SUV Secret Garden showcases modern monsters unreliant on smooth tarmac for their supercar thrills. Each is in excess of 500hp and is just as capable of crossing continents in a single day as its low-slung siblings but with enough room to take the family along too!

o An extended Parade for visitors to enjoy even more supercars close up and in action as they make their way to the start line for the higher speed track section.

o An Action Arena featuring stunt performances, precision driving demonstrations, start-ups, sound-offs and all kinds of fast-road runs throughout the weekend.

o Manufacturer Village areas for special display cars.

o VIP Experience will provide exclusive access to the Palace House Hospitality Enclosure. For those wanting to also attend the Gala Evening, glamorous camping will be available with Pillow Camping’s pre-pitched and furnished tents.

Tickets to the Beaulieu Supercar Weekend are now on sale at www.beaulieusupercarweekend.co.uk.

VIP one-day tickets (for Saturday or Sunday) are £99. One-day tickets to include the Gala Evening, lunch and a dinner buffet are £179 (Saturday only). While VIP weekend tickets are £229 and also include the Gala Evening.

Advance Beaulieu Supercar Weekend tickets can be bought at a discounted price online only. One-day tickets are £19 an adult, £9 a child or £49 a family. Two-day tickets are £34 an adult, £20 a child and £89 a family. Advance tickets are available until midnight on August 19th.

On-the-door event tickets are £24 an adult, £12 a child and £64 a family for one-day tickets, while two-day tickets are £44 an adult, £24 a child and £115 a family.

Admission includes entrance to all of the Beaulieu attraction, including the National Motor Museum, the World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Palace House and the 13th century Beaulieu Abbey and grounds.

Celebrating One Hundred Years of Scottish Architecture

Ryder Architecture and Andy Howland, GEZE

GEZE UK was delighted to sponsor the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Centenary Awards Dinner, in Glasgow, and to present one of the awards which recognised a host of architectural achievements in Scotland.

There was a 23-strong shortlist vying for eleven awards which highlighted an eclectic range of projects- from a town centre redevelopment, a variety of new learning environments, a lookout tower with oil-rig style construction and views of the Flow Country, and the redeveloped British Golf Museum and Café at the famed home of golf, St Andrews.

Andy Howland, sales director for GEZE UK, presented awards to the joint winners in the category for Commercial/Industrial.

They were the Taylor Architecture Practice for the development of Castle MacLellan Foods, in Kirkcudbright (contract value: £3.8m), which saw the creation of a riverside industrial building, and Michael Laird Architects/Reiach and Hall Architects, for the City of Glasgow College, Riverside Campus, Glasgow (contract value: £66m), which created a new landmark on a major crossing of the River Clyde, organised round two civic spaces - a cloistered garden and a grand hall.

Taylor Architecture Practice and Andy Howland, GEZE

It was the third year running that GEZE UK has been one of the key sponsors for the event, which took place this year, at the Hilton Hotel.

The judging panel was chaired by Willie Watt PRIAS and included Denise Bennetts FRIAS (representing the Royal Institute of British Architects), Alan Jones PPRSUA Hon FRIAS, Andy Leitch (Forestry Commission Scotland) and Stuart McKill (Saint-Gobain).

Andy Howland said: “It was a real honour to again support the RIAS awards dinner. It is a remarkable event which illustrates the incredible wealth of talent which has made its mark on the architectural landscape of Scotland and which reflects the eclectic range of needs that these buildings accommodate.”

Willie Watt, President of the RIAS, commented: “It seems appropriate, in this RIAS Centenary year, that we have such a strong and diverse list of winners. Our awards celebrate the very best that is being built in Scotland. This is a tremendous list which goes in scale from a small house extension/reconfiguration to major education provision.”

Which would you choose to secure your belongings – a padlock or a rope?

A property hundreds of years ago may have had no more security than a piece of rope - thankfully technology evolves, and this is no less true with roller garage doors.

Over the years a number of different types of locking systems have been developed for roller garage doors, with varying degrees of security and quality.

Listed below is a range of lifting and locking systems available today, from the least effective to most secure currently on the market. Cheaper doors will most likely use the most basic systems, but for suppliers wishing to offer the highest standards better options are available.  It’s then a choice for the installer and end user which they would prefer to use to the secure the garage.

The most basic method is directly fixing the lath to the barrel, this is generally done without a reinforced top profile and therefore does not help the longevity of the curtain. Also in most cases the curtain can still be lifted when in the closed position.

Next is the ‘T’ spring, which is a thin piece of metal attaching the barrel to lath. This system relies on the lath ‘locking’ out when opened against the hood (assuming it has a hood installed) and as with direct fixing this could easily be lifted when in the closed position.

The most popular method is the Autolock. Fixing to the 70mm octagonal barrel with two rings per lock the Autolock connects to the lath. This is much better than t-springs or direct fixing, but has its problems and limitations. Straps can and do break under stress and strain.

The superior option is the sprung steel reinforced and durable Deprat locking straps available from JD (UK) Ltd. When used in combination with the 89mm cylindrical barrel and Deprat rings this system offers the highest standard of security available.

“Secured by Design” has long been recognised as the gold standard in the testing and accrediting of security products. The Deprat locking system has been tested by a manufacturer to SBD level, surpassing other locking systems tested!

Deprat locking systems also offer
  • Excellent locking of the curtain in the closed position
  • Less locking and lifting straps required compared to traditional Autolock systems due to the        heavy duty quality of the product
  • The curtain rolls into a true circle, which reduces the marking to the door finish
  • Tighter rolling diameters for minimum hood diameter
  • Great sales potential against inferior products

The Deprat system it is not a product offered by all manufacturers

Therefore it is a fantastic selling point for end users who know quality when they see it. Just by showing them a sample of a t-spring or standard autolock and barrel and comparing this against a Deprat locking system and barrel, the Deprat really does win every time.

Deprat is a quality and growing name in the UK, over 5000 roller garage doors already use this superior system.

If your roller door manufacturer doesn’t offer Deprat, please contact JD UK Ltd on 01924 472 924 and they’ll  put you in touch with a local manufacturer who does. A local friendly supplier can also give you that local service which is sometimes key to winning orders.

Alternatively please email louis@jdukltd.co.uk for further information and suppliers.

Hörmann to Showcase Leading Products at UK’s Premier Intralogistics Event

Industrial door and loading bay equipment manufacturer Hörmann will be displaying a selection of its market leading product range at this year’s International Materials Handling Exhibition (IMHX) at the NEC in Birmingham.

The exhibition, which takes place from 13 – 16 September 2016, is a key event in the intralogistics industry and provides the ideal platform for supply chain professionals to come together. The free-to-attend event will feature over 400 exhibitors showcasing their latest products and services.

Hörmann’s stand will cover 180m², with an extensive range of industrial doors and loading bay equipment on display. Visitors to the stand will have the chance to see popular choices from Hörmann’s industrial door range including its high speed spiral door and the new direct drive rolling shutter. The intelligent DOBO docking system will also be available to view and demonstrations will be given.

Last year, the leading manufacturer made a number of changes to its service department, extending and improving its flexible service packages. Hörmann specialists will also be on hand over the four days to answer questions on its full offering and give demonstrations.

Statistics from IMHX 2013 show that 77 per cent of attendees stated that visiting the exhibition would influence their buying decisions. Over 19,500 people visited the last IMHX in 2013 and was hugely successful for Hörmann, something the company is hoping to replicate later this year.

David O’Mara, marketing manager at Hörmann (UK) Ltd. commented:
“With tens of thousands of industry specialists attending the event, along with some of the leading decision makers, IMHX provides us with the perfect opportunity to offer information and advice on our product range and service packages to key industry targets.”

That Perfect Fit from Garador

Homes come in all shapes and sizes, but garage doors are still an important part of the frontage of most properties. Finding a garage door that perfectly fits your opening isn’t always easy with some manufacturers, which is why Garador offers thousands of standard and purpose-made door sizes, helping to ensure the garage door perfectly fits the opening.

So when fitting a Garador garage door there is no need to compromise by ordering a door that nearly fits the opening, and then resorting to using infill pieces to complete the job, when a purpose made one will fit the opening more accurately. Using infill pieces never gives a perfect finish, it takes longer to install and it can cost more.

Today, thanks to Garador’s easy measuring and ordering systems, it is now even easier to purchase a door that will perfectly fit the opening.

Simon Hipgrave, Garador’s managing director, argues that ordering the right door size can have real benefits, “If you can order the right door size, it results in a more accurate fit, a better finish for the homeowner and it is also generally faster to fit the door.”

He continues ‘If you are fitting one of Garador’s Up & Over doors, you can use a steel frame which doesn’t require any painting and makes it quicker and easier to fit the door. Not to mention the fact that there is no risk of having a timber frame that is often imperfect with gaps around it and will likely warp or rot overtime.’

Garador is one of the UK’s leading garage door manufacturers with a selection of precision engineered garage door products, including Up & Over, Sectional and Roller doors.

Their steel Up & Over doors are Britain’s bestselling door and come in so many size variations, in both width and height combinations, giving builders and specifiers a broad spectrum of sizing options to choose from. Door sizes are worked out to fit either between the brickwork or behind the reveals; and a variety of double door sizes are also available.

Find out more about Garador’s extensive range of garage doors at www.garador.co.uk or call 01935 443701.

Fire Doors. Learn the facts.

Door-Stop, the UK’s leading supplier of composite doors, has launched a new video to promote the importance of correctly specifying fire doors, in order to prevent the risk of prosecution and protect against the spread of fire.

Although fire doors should be integral to a building’s fire risk management strategy, they are often not given the consideration they deserve. As such, Door-Stop’s new video has been created to educate local authorities, housing associations and installers about taking precautions when it comes to the specification of fire doors – helping to ensure the safety of the people on the premises.

Patrick Dean, Head of Sales and Marketing at Door-Stop, commented:
“On average there are over 174 building fires every day, yet despite this figure, we are still not taking a robust enough approach to product specification. In fact, a recent report by the FDIS found that over 61% of fire doors inspected had problems with fire or smoke seals. This type of neglect can lead to prosecution or an unlimited fine from the fire service.
“Our new video highlights the implications of installing a faulty fire door and emphasises the key facts surrounding their specification – too many people are dying from inadequate fire defences and more needs to be done to educate the entire supply chain.”
When it comes to fire safety, the duty of care to the inhabitants of a building is of utmost importance and with so much guidance available and reputable fire door suppliers to consult, such as Door-Stop, achieving adequate fire protection should be a straightforward matter. There is no need to risk not having a fully effective and certified fire door.

For more information about Door-Stop and to watch the video please visit www.door-stop.co.uk/firedoors

Teckentrup gives Elvis (Truckport) a seriously big solution for its trucks!

Logic suggests that distribution companies work with pallet loads, however the facility to handle part loads brings increased versatility and the ability to increase the utilisation of each vehicle load.

This was one of the factors behind the creation of a new building for logistic company Truckport Elvis. The design of the building required that trucks could drive in and out, unhindered by narrow doorways that normally limit flow.

The result of this is a 10,000 square metre hall with two entrance/exit doorways through which the lorries drive in and out. The entrances and exits were planned to be extra-large so that they do not become an obstruction in the hub. They are 15 metres wide and almost five metres high. No average door will do the job; enter the Teckentrup XXL roller door.

Two doors located next to each other, in which the middle post takes over the lateral guidance; the post then slides to one side when the doors are fully opened. Eight ThermoTeck XXL roller shutters with direct mount drive were fitted into the four hall entrances - two for each opening.

The middle post is 50 cm wide and is made from galvanised steel; it ensures that the doors remain stable and assists with guidance. It is connected with the guide rails at the top; using these it can also be shifted to the side. Safety is ensured at all times:

To shift the post, it must first be unlocked; in the same manner, the doors can only be moved when the middle post is locked in place. As the glazing is on eye level, it is easy to see what is happening on the other side.
Every day, 70 to 75 lorries enter the large entrances from all directions. Forklift trucks arrive immediately, load and unload the lorries and the vehicles are quickly back on the road, with new goods and new destinations.

700 to 800 tonnes of goods are moved every night from the truckport unimpeded by small doors!

For more details of Teckentrup’s XXL door call Jim Rodger at Teckentrup UK Limited on 01925 924050 or visit www.teckentrup.co.uk.

Only XK 140 to race at Le Mans returns to the famous circuit this weekend for Le Mans Classic

The only Jaguar XK 140 FHC to race in the 24hs of Le Mans in 1956, and was erroneously black flagged, returns to the famous circuit 60 years later for a rematch at Le Mans Classic this weekend.

This XK140 was privately entered into the race and driven by Roger Walshaw and Peter Bolton in 1956, but it was erroneously disqualified while running in 11th place with 206 laps.

The car, which was recently restored and race prepared by world-leading restorers and Jaguar specialists Classic Motor Cars of Bridgnorth (CMC), is being taken back by its current owner Mr. Peter Neumark.

It will be competing in the Grid 2 class for cars manufactured between 1949 and 1956 and also in the Jaguar Classic Challenge.

“The opportunity to restore the only Jaguar XK 140 to race in the 24hs of Le Mans 60 years ago was compelling,” said Peter. “In 1956 this private entry car astounded the crowds and was running 11th in the 21st hour of the race when it was cruelly and wrongfully black flagged.
“The offer of a free entry from the ACO for the following year’s race was a scant recompense for what would have been at least a top ten finish, but the car never returned until now.”

Peter added:
“It is a privilege to take this car back to Le Mans and drive it in what will probably be my last competitive race on a circuit I love and where I won in 2010 in the Jaguar D-Type OKV1.”

Nick Goldthorp, Managing Director of CMC, said:
“The car has been completely restored from the chassis up, covering every nut and bolt, and saving as much of the original vehicle as possible due to its prominent racing pedigree.”
