Communal Garden in Kensington Secures Access Control with CLIQ® Go from Abloy

Abloy UK and security company Barry Brothers have supplied and installed a CLIQ® Go electronic cylinder solution to a communal garden in Kensington, London to provide its subscribers with reliable and secure access.

The garden’s previous access control system had proven to be unreliable, at times allowing members of the public unauthorised access which often resulted in damage in the area. Also, previous subscribers had maintained ingress and egress to the garden by retaining their key after their subscription had lapsed.

Located in an enclosed area, the garden is secured with an external gate that is fully exposed to the elements.

The resident committee required a durable locking solution to cope with such conditions, with the technology to control multiple access requirements; to allow subscribing resident’s access to the gardens, and a team of contractors and committee members with higher access permission to enter the internal compound to enable maintenance of the gardens.

Sam Moxey, technical sales and project manager at Barry Brothers, London’s longest serving security company, specified the new CLIQ® Go electronic cylinder solution from Abloy as the ideal technology to cope with the ever-changing access control requirements.

The CLIQ® Go App moves security to a new dimension, enabling controlled security from a mobile device and the ability to easily revoke access permission of non-subscribed individuals.

Features include the ability to schedule access to areas and to provide contractors with time-limited access. If a key is lost, access can also be revoked using the CLIQ® Go App, all managed from a cloud-based system.

The system has been installed for six months with excellent feedback from the committee and subscribers. Membership subscriptions have increased and savings have also been achieved because of the reduced number of locksmith callouts.

Sam Moxey, Barry Brothers, said:
"I wanted to ensure that the solution we specified would perform as required and finally resolve what had become an ongoing issue for the committee. Having worked with Abloy UK for a number of years, I had no hesitation in recommending CLIQ® Go. It was very easy to set up and the programming of the CLIQ® Go locks and keys was achieved easily, fitting with my busy workload".

Avocet’s Dark Nights Focus Draws Industry Praise

Avocet Hardware has received widespread industry praise for its #StayHomeSecure dark nights campaign.

The campaign, was aimed at highlighting the annual rise in burglaries during the period following the clocks going back, while also positioning its ABS locks as the home security product for homeowners to put their trust in.

The six-week campaign, which saw the return of Ollie the retired guard-dog, and the introduction of his former nemesis, Kat the burglar, saw Avocet reach over two million social media users in the UK.

The Brighouse company gained over 1,100 new followers, and saw its Twitter posts alone retweeted over 4,000 times and liked 33,000 times. Astonishingly, the engagement rate of its Twitter activity far outstripped the global benchmark of less than 1% - averaging over 6% for the entire campaign.

Meanwhile, it’s paid for social media activity also left the worldwide standard in its wake – with close to 1 in 5 of those who saw the weekly Ollie & Kat competition tweets either liking, sharing or commenting on them.

Derrick Purvis, marketing manager of Avocet Hardware said:
“It’s become a horrible, but sadly accepted fact that the only people who look forward to the clocks going backs are the burglars. There are though a few simple things homeowners can do to protect their properties against unwanted visitors during the dark nights, and our #StayHomeSecure campaign spelt those out in a manner that really struck a chord.”

One of Avocet’s key aims for the campaign was to engage with locksmiths, and demonstrate to them the benefits of using ABS locks.
“We’ve been staggered by the response from the locksmiths, many of who we haven’t worked with before,” added Derrick.
“They were enthusiastic in getting on-board with the campaign; sharing content, requesting ABS samples and taking part in the various competitions; and those who were lucky enough to win, whether it was Ollie & Kat artwork, our terrifying, Halloween themed, Pop Vinyls or simply ABS branded merchandise, happily shared photos and videos of their prizes and delight at winning them.”
The artwork that was up for grabs featured Ollie – a guard dog forced into early retirement – and his former nemesis, Kat – an out-of-work cat burglar.

Both had ended up on the scrap heap following Ollie’s owners’ decision to install Avocet’s snap secure ABS locks on their home, and spent the six weeks of the campaign trying out a variety of new hobbies – all of which tied in with events, movies or TV shows that were popular during the campaign period.

The success of the #StayHomeSecure campaign wasn’t just limited to social media stats and engagement. Avocet saw a huge increase in the number of trade customers using its online store, bringing record months for both October and November.

On top of that, a number of new locksmiths have already been confirmed as Avocet ABS stockists, and many more are on the verge of following suit.

For further information about Avocet and ABS visit www.avocet-hardware.co.uk or call 01484 711 700.

And make sure you don’t miss out on the festive Avocet fun by following @avocetabs on Twitter or liking its Facebook page .

Expected Winter Whiteout means Automatic Doors should be checked

Carrying out weekly checks on automatic doors in the run-up to the UK’s envisaged “worst winter in 70 years” is being urged by experts from GEZE UK.

Weather forecasters are predicting that a polar cold snap could bring the longest whiteout Britain has seen since the 1950s – not the time to find that automatic doors are no longer working properly.

GEZE UK’s service director Steve Marshall says that ensuring doors are properly maintained and working correctly will help reduce heat loss, reduce the chances of water ingress – minimising the chance of slips or trips – and reduce carbon footprint and C02 levels into the building.

He advises estate and facilities managers to put in place weekly checks to ensure that doors open and close with maximum efficiency.
“If the doors form a secure entrance proper maintenance is essential to ensure that the door leaf or leaves close fully on to locks or magnetic locks to maintain security,” he said.
He recommends a ‘ten-point plan’ to keep doors in tip top condition. This includes:

1. Making sure that any operator running tracks or the path of travel that a door follows is clear of debris including snow and grit

2. Checking brush strips or sealing strips are present and in good condition

3. Visually inspecting the operation of the door and ensuring that it opens and closes in a 20-25 second cycle time depending on the application

4. Ensuring that the door is brought to a full close and if required engage with any locking systems

5. Making sure that sensors are clean and free from damage

6. Testing of any push button activation devices to ensure door opens and closes efficiently

7. Inspect for any loose or damaged drive arms which should be reported immediately

8. Visually inspect the door for any damage including breakages to glass and report immediately

9. Listen to the operation of the door any unusual ‘metal on metal’ scraping which may indicate a problem that will result in failure of the door later. Again, this should be reported immediately

10. Visually inspect the door and identify if there is any scraping of the door directly on the floor

In addition, ‘dutyholders’ need to prepare for snowy and icy conditions and minimise risk. The HSE’s Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L24 for the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations notes in paragraph 96 that this might include “gritting, snow clearing and closing off some routes, particularly outside stairs, ladders and walkways on the roof”.

Carrying out risk assessments before the bad weather arrives is the best course of action, it recommends.
Adds Steve: “Generally, weather conditions in the UK tend not to be so severe but during the winter months we should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Carrying out this simple ten-point plan throughout the year should help keep automatic doors working at their best and keep anyone walking over our thresholds safe and secure.”

Door closer’s fire credentials enhanced

Samuel Heath is committed to ensuring that its Powermatic controlled, concealed door closers provide the ultimate assurance in quality and performance

This commitment has now been further underlined with the successful completion of additional full-sized fire testing on both timber and steel fire doors at renowned testing laboratory, Exova Warrington Fire.

30-minute testing in accordance with BS EN 1634-1 was undertaken on a timber fire door constructed with a Halspan core to replace Powermatic’s current small-scale indicative testing for the BS476 assessment.

The door set easily achieved the 30-minute test requirements, continuing until final failure occurred at 42 minutes. Significantly, where most timber door fire tests fail due to failure of the hinge/timber joint, which causes the door to drop and intumescent seal to break at the top of the door.

Powermatic was actually shown to hold the door in place after the hinge/timber joint failure. This is attributed to the design, strength and location of Powermatic, which fits in a similar position to hinges, between the door and door frame.

Most notably though, and in common with other fire tests including Powermatic, there was no evidence of any significant heat transfer in the vicinity where the closer was installed.

The steel fire door test incorporated an uninsulated Teckentrup fire door with Powermatic fitted using receiver plates. Again, testing was undertaken in accordance with BS EN 1634-1, but for the four-hour, FD240 fire rating.

The uninsulated steel door passed the four-hour test comfortably. As a result, the test evidence will allow certification to cover both insulated and non-insulated doors at any fire rating up to and including four hours.

Adam Daniels, Head of Design at Samuel Heath, states:
“Recent tragic events have highlighted the need for the stringent adherence to fire safety regulations and the selection of products which meet essential performance criteria. These latest tests provide additional proof of Powermatic’s suitability for both timber and steel fire doors.
“They have also yielded some pleasing information on the additional benefits that the door closers deliver. We know that specifiers working on private and public building projects will welcome these findings.”

Further details on Powermatic controlled, concealed door closers can be obtained from Samuel Heath on 0121 766 4200, by emailing sales@samuel-heath.com or by visiting the company’s dedicated door closer website at www.concealeddoorclosers.com.

New Year Honours at The 2019 Classic

The arrival of every new year heralds a raft of exciting anniversaries and, in the car world, 2019 is crammed full of major motoring milestones – the cream of which will be celebrated at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (26-28 July).

As tradition now dictates, the annual Classic is the event that honours automotive history like no other, with a mouth-watering feast of dedicated retro races, massive eye-catching car club displays and glittering on-track parades that have been saluted with multiple Guinness World Records.

In recent years, the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit has staged record-breaking processions featuring evocative E-type Jaguars, fabulous Ferrari F40s, evergreen Porsche 911s, muscular Ford Mustangs, sensational Jaguar XJ220 supercars and never-before-seen numbers of stunning McLarens – as well as a whole host of other glittering parades.

Even by these sky-high standards, though, 2019 is revving up to be a very, very special year at the Classic.

Plans for a number of bedazzling birthday races and other anniversary celebrations will be announced over the next few weeks. In the meantime, though, more than 110 car clubs have already registered to display at the 2019 Classic and many of these will be honouring significant marque and model landmarks in July.

The Bentley Drivers Club will be out in force, celebrating the centenary of the prestigious luxury brand founded in 1919 by the legendary W.O. Bentley in Cricklewood, north London.

Abarth is another time-honoured company boasting both distinguished road and racing car pedigrees – its 70th birthday will be marked in style at the Classic by the Abarth Owners Club.

Marcos and Mini clubs will be hosting Diamond Jubilee birthday parties as their cherished icons hit 60 in 2019, while gold is the colour for both the Ford Capri and Triumph TR6 – two endearing sixties sportscars born exactly 50 years before the summer’s Classic, and still with passionate followings today.

Although from a slightly more modern era, the BMW Z1 and Mazda MX-5 are two models not only much-loved by enthusiasts but also with strong regular presences at the Classic – more so this year as both evocative two-seater idols will be turning 30 in 2019.
“Whether it’s on or off the track, the Classic is one of the world’s biggest celebrations of motoring history, with more than 10,000 magical cars from yesteryear on show over three jam-packed days,” enthused Nick Wigley, Silverstone Classic CEO.
“But while the unrivalled numbers are impressive, it’s the special automotive anniversaries that always add extra sparkle each year… and in 2019 we have some real jewels to celebrate. The cars are the stars at the Classic!”
Whether or not popping corks, ever-growing numbers of car clubs now choose to stage their main annual gathering at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, with their passionate members taking advantage of an exclusive display package and taking centre stage at the heart of the event.

Further details on the clubs registered to date and information on the process for car clubs wishing to apply for registration, are available at: www.silverstoneclassic.com/clubs

All admission tickets also grant access to a selection of trackside grandstands, live music concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings, both racing paddocks plus the vast majority of the fun-fuelled family entertainment on offer at the ‘rocking and racing’ Classic.

Full details of car club packages, general admission tickets, hospitality packages and camping options can be found on the silverstoneclassic.com website with Early Bird tickets (available until the end of March) offering significant savings on standard tickets.

Vital property guidance available at exciting new South East Homebuilding & Renovating Show

Brits in the South East are among the highest to overestimate the role of their tradespeople, with over 40 per cent of them expecting contractors to design or plan the work as well as carry out the job in hand.

However, around 60 per cent of tradespeople wish that clients knew the type of service they offer before contacting them, according to a new survey conducted by The South East Homebuilding & Renovating Show, which is coming to Farnborough for the first time from 19-20 January 2019 at the Farnborough Exhibition and Conference Centre.

This new regional property show, sponsored by Idealcombi, the Danish contemporary window company, will provide a clearer insight into how to find suitable specialists for any type of projects and also present opportunities to source the help, products and services required all under one roof.

Regardless of their building or renovating stage, attendees can access trusted guidance and expertise over the two days. They will be able to find the latest information on areas including renovating, building your own home, extensions and conversions, eco and heating, doors and windows and more, discussed extensively by specialists at over 25 free seminars and masterclasses. Consumers will also have the chance to explore products from over 130 national and local exhibitors.

Self-builders and renovators who would like to share their building ideas with an array of property experts are encouraged to visit the Ask the Expert area inside the Advice Centre, sponsored by Internorm, Europe’s leading windows and doors manufacturer. This section will welcome attendees to receive personalised, impartial advice from seven property specialists via one-on-one consultations.

The experts include Michael Holmes (director of content and product development for Homebuilding & Renovating magazine), Jason Orme (editorial director of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine), Bob Branscombe (building expert), Mick Cruickshank (construction expert), David Hilton (eco expert) and Tom McSherry (finance expert).

Show highlights also include the Ask the Builder area, which enables visitors to gain vital information via free 15-minute sessions from members of the Federation of Master Builders.

Additionally, The Advice Centre will host the Ask the Architect area, where chartered architectural specialists from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will be on hand to assist self-builders in the design, planning and construction process, maximising their budget and turning their aspirations into reality.

An important stage of progress when undertaking a project is obtaining planning permission. At The Planning Clinic, Sally Tagg and her team of experts from Foxley Tagg will convey up-to-date information on new regulations and laws, plus advice on how to avoid recurrently passing through this stage.

Standard show tickets are £8 in advance or £12 on the door (children under 16 go free).
For more details, visit homebuildingshow.co.uk

Alternatively, call the ticket hotline on 0844 858 6760 (calls cost 7p per minute plus network extras).

Police Crime Prevention Techniques built into regenerated South-east London Council Estate

A former council estate, which was blighted by social problems and crime for 40 years, has undergone a major regeneration with police crime prevention techniques built into its 588 new homes from the outset.

The 1970s Larner Road Estate in South-east London was widely known as a troubled estate and it presented huge challenges for police. Calls about crime often required a two-car response, a direct reflection of the level of crime and disorder on the estate.

Over the last five years, Larner Road has been transformed into Erith Park as part of a project by the UK housing group Orbit and Wates Residential.

The estate’s eight tower blocks have come down and been replaced by a low to medium rise development of apartments and houses for affordable rent, shared ownership and market sale, built into traditional street patterns.

The Metropolitan Police has reported no recorded offences of burglaries, drugs related offences, weapons, robberies or personal thefts within the boundary of Erith Park over the last 12 months. Despite the high density of the housing on Erith Park, it now has 80% less crime compared to the rest of the ward it sits within.

Key to this policing success has been the ongoing work of police officers specially trained by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative. Known as Designing Out Crime Officers, they are attached to local police forces around the UK to work with architects, developers and local authority planners to design out crime at the planning stage – long before construction begins.

SBD measures improve the physical security of buildings with robust doors, windows and locks that meet SBD standards as well as crime prevention techniques designed into the surrounding layout and landscaping. These techniques include increasing natural surveillance so strangers can be seen clearly and limiting cut-throughs and alleyways to avoid potential hiding places and escape routes.

Over the last 30 years, there have been more than one million new homes built across the UK to SBD crime prevention standards with reductions in crime of up to 87% each and every year.

Metropolitan Police Sgt Matt Coe, said:
“Designing out crime on the estate has not only reduced crime but also improved the outlook for people who live here. It’s a place where people are choosing to live. Whereas before, it had a poor reputation and was poorly regarded.”
SBD Development Officer, Lyn Poole, said:
“This was the first SBD development to have access control systems installed at communal entrance doorsets with data-logging providing a video and audio record of attempts or requests to enter buildings – an important potential source of evidence when investigating criminal activities.”
Built in two phases, construction on the £120 million project started in March 2013 and finished in December 2018.

Caroline Field, Head of Regeneration, Orbit, said:
“The estate’s perception in the wider community is that it’s an amazing transformation. Sometimes, on regeneration schemes, people say: ‘You may have built new homes, but it’s still the same place’. But with Erith Park, people can see the wider and deeper transformation – it’s not just window dressing.”

Paul Nicholls, Managing Director of Wates Residential, said:

“Erith Park is testament to the far-reaching long term impact that design can have on creating great places where people are proud to live. What was once one of the least popular estates in Erith is now one of the most sought after.”
