Jewers’ Opens the doors at Greater Anglia’s £40m refurbishment of Crown Point Depot

In 2018 Taylor Woodrow Contractors began construction of a series of extensions, upgrades and refurbishments to the existing Norwich Crown Point Depot for Abellio Greater Anglia.

The works were needed to convert and extend facilities to provide servicing, maintenance and stabling for a new fleet of longer trains from the Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler.

For stage one of the works in 2018, Jewers Doors were contracted to supply 2 sets of Swift-SEW doors for the depot openings at ‘Road 16 & Road 17’ on an old existing shed. Each set of doors were manufactured for an opening 4.6 metres wide x 6.4 metres high and are electrically operated in 4 leaves, with 2 leaves folding to each side clear of the opening.

The Swift-SEW bi-folding door has been purpose designed to accommodate taller openings, overhead electrification wires and rail tracks through the doorway so it is ideal for this application.

Following the success of the Swift-SEW doors, early in 2020, Jewers were involved in the design of a further door to Road 14. Being too wide for a Swift-SEW door, we proposed a bi-parting top-hung Osprey folding door in 8-leaves.

One half of the door would serve as the train entrance into the depot and the opposite half as a workshop door for forklift access bringing bogies and other heavy stock into the depot. This versatile door solution is 6.5 metres wide x 5 metres high and was delivered and installed earlier in 2021.

The door was installed with a special bottom track, designed to work around existing railway tracks while still allowing the door to operate seamlessly.

All 3 doors are fitted with full opening and closing safety devices to prevent impact with vehicles or personnel and are controlled with fully programmable PLC control panels which link directly with the depot protection system for added safety within the challenging rail depot environment.

Table for Jack!

Jack Aluminium’s versatile JD47 commercial door and shopfront system has been specified for the entrance of the Mowgli Street Food restaurant in Cheshire Oaks.

After starting in Liverpool in 2014, the chain restaurant has since expanded across the country and opened its latest branch in the Cheshire Oaks designer outlet at the end of June. Merseyside-based fabricator and installer Aluserv fitted the shopfront system, including all of the doors and windows.

The restaurant has bi-folding doors and folding windows running down the side of the building. A glazed atrium area featuring two sets of commercial doors, fabricated from Jack Aluminium’s JD47 system, creates the ideal welcome for diners.

Wayne Ford, Director at Aluserv, specialists in the manufacture and installation of architectural aluminium said:
“We have been a long-standing customer of Jack Aluminium and have worked with them since we formed 9 years ago,
“JD47 is a very simple product, but it still delivers exactly what we need and more. They’re great people and the whole team have always provided us with excellent customer service. High Speed at Hörmann UK

Hörmann UK recently launched a new high speed industrial sectional door, the Series 60 which has been designed and developed to provide the Hörmann guarantee of quality construction, high security, and easy installation.

When fitted with the new WA 500 FU operator, the Series 60 can achieve an impressive door opening speed of up to 1 m/s making it the fastest sectional door on the market.

Not only does the Series 60 door offer an exceptional opening speed, but optimised track radii and enlarged rollers result in up to 5 dB(A) quieter door operation together with improved stability, leading to low wear and smoother door travel.

Easy fitting and maintenance are aided by reduced components and the provision of press-fitted screws, whilst transition sleeves provide a precise fitting of the track and radius.  The door is delivered factory set to the optimum speed but can be easily adjusted and the speed varied to suit individual operational requirements.

For added security anti-lift kits are fitted on both sides of the bottom section of the door as standard, and optional RC 2 security measures are available according to DIN/TS 18194.  Operator safety is enhanced by the inclusion of an in-line light grill which automatically stops the door if an obstruction occurs whilst the door is closing.

The new WA 500 FU operator features soft-start and soft-stop for gentle, smooth door travel, and constant travel speed for both high-lift and vertical track applications.

The set-up and commissioning of the Series 60 door are fast and simple with the provision of an innovative Bluetooth app.  Accessible using either a mobile phone or tablet, the app provides users with friendly, easy to follow step-by-step instructions and also provides straightforward fault finding and diagnostic data.

As part of their strategy to improve and optimise warehouse operations, Hörmann UK is installing four Series 60 doors and WA 500 FU operators at their Coalville headquarters.  The doors, which will each measure 5m wide x 4.5m high, incorporate a 42mm insulated panel and triple glazed vision panels providing excellent thermal properties.

Kerry Seager, Operations Manager at Hörmann UK comments:
“The past 9 months have seen an increased level of vehicle movements in and out of our Coalville facility as our levels of business continue to grow.  When it came to replacing our existing sectional doors in our four loading bays the Series 60 was the obvious choice.  Not only will they provide us with the opportunity to speed up and streamline our operations, but they will also help to lower ventilation heat loss.
“Speed and ease of installation is also a crucial factor as we are limited to the amount of downtime available for each loading bay, with around 200 vehicle movements in and out the facility daily there is no room for delay.”

First Triumph Motor Bicycle ever built confirmed for Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance

Salon Privé Week is renowned as being a celebration of two-wheeled machinery as well as four, and this year Blenheim Palace will host the world debut of a unique and hugely significant motor bicycle.

Over the course of its long and illustrious history, Triumph became one of the most recognisable of all marques thanks to legendary models such as the Speed Twin and Bonneville, while screen icon Marlon Brando famously rode a Thunderbird 6T in The Wild One.

Having been producing bicycles at its Coventry factory since 1889, Triumph moved into the world of motor bicycles at the turn of the 20th century and was a pioneering force in the burgeoning British motorcycle industry.

Siegfried Bettmann and Moritz Schulte were responsible for the design, which used a 3/4hp 172cc Minerva engine from Belgium. A rear band brake was employed, and an eccentric crank to enable the rider to adjust the rear chain.

The Triumph motor bicycle was launched in September 1901 for the 1902 season. By the outbreak of The Great War, the marque's reputation for quality and reliability was well established, leading to substantial orders for military use.

The example that will be on display at Blenheim Palace as part of the Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance is the very first Triumph motor-bicycle ever made and actually dates from 1901. Its appearance represents a unique opportunity to see this historic motor-bicycle – the forerunner of all subsequent Triumphs – in public for the first time since 1937.

The prestigious Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance presented by Aviva takes place on Wednesday 1st September and will feature two classes – Exceptional Motorcycles and Exceptional Competition Motorcycles.

Previous class winners have included renowned motorcycle builder Allen Millyard, who has claimed multiple Salon Privé awards. His exquisite Honda SS100 V-twin is a previous Best in Show winner, and in 2019 his Velocette MAC V-Twin received the Most Spectacular Motorbike award from the event host, the Duke of Marlborough.

Millyard will return this year with his Kawasaki Z1 Super Six. This beautifully engineered machine uses a six-cylinder engine that is based on the standard Z1’s double-overhead-camshaft four-cylinder unit and uses original Kawasaki parts. Everything else on the motorcycle is standard, giving a subtle end result that looks like something the factory itself could have produced.

The judging panel for the Concours d’Elégance includes some of the most respected experts in the motorcycle world. Writer and consultant Somer Hooker will be joined by broadcaster Henry Cole, historians Dennis Frost and Mike Jackson, along with former racer Steve Parrish. The Motorcycle Awards Ceremony will take place at noon on Thursday 2 September with judges, owners and the Duke of Marlborough present.

A new addition for 2021 is the introduction of a motorcycle parade to open the event on the mornings of Wednesday 1 September and Thursday 2 September. Entrants will start outside the show field, then parade through the grounds of Blenheim Palace and into place on the elegant South Lawn.

There will also be the opportunity for motorcycle entrants to take part in Tour Privé for the first time, on Tuesday 31 August. The 100-mile route will depart from the Great Court at Blenheim Palace and travel through the spectacular Cotswold countryside, with a luncheon stop at Grittleton House in the picturesque village of Grittleton, Wiltshire.

Elsewhere on the South Lawn, Thornton Hundred will be among the brands showcasing their latest designs. The British company’s line-up will include the ‘World’s Fastest Bobber’ – a 202bhp technological tour de force – and a 2021 Triumph Bonneville Bobber Black, both are a Salon Privé debut.
‘We’re thrilled to be welcoming the first-ever Triumph motor bicycle to Blenheim Palace,’ said Salon Privé Concours Chairman Andrew Bagley, ‘and there will be a real buzz around it considering that it hasn’t been seen in public for more than 80 years. With more exceptional motorcycles already being entered into the Concours d’Elégance, this year’s event is shaping up to be a memorable celebration of motoring in all its forms.’
With a programme that includes Ladies’ Day presented by Boodles on Friday, the Salon Privé Club Trophy presented by Lockton on Saturday, and Sunday’s Classic and Supercar event, all the elements are in place for another unmissable Salon Privé Week.

Tickets can be purchased via the website www.salonpriveconcours.com or by calling the Ticket Hotline: 0808 100 2205.

Former Apprentice to Head up the Construction Industry Training Board, CITB

New chief executive urged to address the skills shortage

A former apprentice service engineer, Tim Balcon, will take over the reins of the CITB from the beginning of next month.

Mr Balcon started out from a mining town in South Yorkshire as an apprentice with British Gas in the early 1980s.
"As a former apprentice I know how much having the right skills at a young age can transform your whole career and support your employer.
"That's why I'm so passionate about skills and am thrilled to be joining the team to help many more people join the construction sector and to have long and fulfilling careers within it," he said.
Mr Balcon will replace the current chief executive Sarah Beale who will leave at the end of September. The organisation had come in for criticism during her stewardship for failing to deliver value for money.

The National Federation of Builders, NFB, claimed its members were paying almost twice in their annual levy to the CITB compared with what they received. It said the training organisation's business plan for the coming year was just a £210m investment representing less than ten per cent of the £2.7bn provided in training across the industry.

NFB chief executive Richard Beresford said:
"The organisation must demonstrate value for all construction employers, especially for the SMEs across England, Scotland and Wales, and become an organisation fit for the future. Our members want to see CITB running efficiently, effectively and most importantly with accountability. It's time for CITB to step up under his leadership and we look forward to working with him to deliver that."
The industry sees training as essential for developing the skills for new and traditional techniques and recruiting new talent to tackle the current skills shortage.

CITB chair Peter Lauener said:
"This is a crucial time for construction skills across Britain, and the Board is looking forward to working with him to drive forward our strategy to meet the skills needs of employers."
Property bridging finance brokers Hank Zarihs Associates said development finance lenders regarded training as critical for the industry to carry out energy improvements and build new net-zero carbon homes.

Mr Balcon has had previous experience heading up professional and membership bodies and was chief executive of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment from 2013 to 2019.

He was chief executive of the Energy and Utility Sector Skills Council where he created the National Skills Academy for Power from 2003 to 2012 and a member of the Ofqual board from 2010 to 2016. He was also chief executive of the membership body the Energy and Utility Skills from 2003 to 2012.

Ensuring Access for All

GEZE UK’s popular RIBA-approved CPD Removing Barriers to Access has been completely revised and updated and includes new visuals and updates to regulation all in GEZE’s new branding.

The CPD looks at why door controls are needed, explains the various standards and regulations that apply, where and when to use a manual door control or an automatic operator. It looks at self-closing devices for fire door applications and the benefits of electro hold-open devices. The seminar also explains the benefit of automatic doors, the different types and their suitability, as well as their potential danger points.

Offering architects and specifiers invaluable advice and guidance, which contributes to their continuing professional development, this updated training seminar gives a better understanding of the requirements of specifying door control devices to make buildings accessible to everyone.

The 40 minute seminar covers all the relevant standards and regulations and is included in RIBA’s core curriculum: Access for all, Compliance, and Designing and building it.

It can be presented in person or virtually via a variety of online platforms and at a time to suit, usually lunchtime but breakfast seminars or afternoon sessions can be accommodated.

To find out more or to book a CPD seminar, email cpd@geze.com or visit www.geze.co.uk/en/services/trainings-and-seminars-cpd

Brochure gets complete overhaul to support exciting launch

To support the recent launch of digital print on the Trend series of garage door, JD UK has relaunched their brochure for Alutech sectional garage doors and automation products.

The brochure has been meticulously redesigned by the sales and marketing team at JD UK to incorporate feedback from garage door installers. The result is a very thorough and informative booklet that will appeal to both the homeowner and installer.

A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say, and the new brochure is full of great new images over 44 pages to highlight the design and innovation of Alutech products.

Detailed explanations of the features and benefits, as well as the upgrades and options available, means the brochure makes an ideal sales tool for installers to present to their customers and leave behind to reinforce their buying decision.

JD UK’s National Sales Manager, Jason Wade, said:
“With the introduction of the digital print option last year on the Prestige series of doors, and this year on our most popular door, the Trend series, we now have almost limitless design options available, meaning homeowners can have something completely bespoke and personal to them.

It was really important to have marketing materials to reflect this. Initial feedback from customers has been glowing.”
To request a copy of the new brochure please contact the helpful, friendly team, on 01924 472924, or email sales@jdukltd.co.uk.

Alternatively, please visit www.jdukltd.co.uk or Instagram @alutechgaragedoors, Facebook @Alutechgaragedoorsuk, Twitter @AlutechGD, and LinkedIn @JD UK LTD.

DHF Celebrates a Decade of Support for the Automated Gate and Traffic Barrier Sector

Two years ago, Director of Security Access Systems Ltd, Martin Keelagher, was named Chairman of DHF’s Automated Gate Group.

Here, following a year of unprecedented industry turbulence, and with DHF celebrating 10 years of unequivocal support for the industry, he offers his thoughts on the factors impacting the sector because of Brexit and Covid-19: the perfect storm.

This year, DHF has celebrated a decade of support for the automated gate and traffic barrier sector, and what a year it has been. There have been few years to rival the last, with Brexit and Covid-19 collaborating to cause untold uncertainty across the business landscape. It’s a view shared by Martin Keelagher, who, together with DHF, continues to be a passionate advocate for raising industry standards and furthering its objectives.

“DHF is celebrating ten years of setting the standard in both education and support of the Automated Gate sector, against the backdrop of perhaps the most challenging period in living memory for the industry, and indeed, the wider national and international community,” he says. “But there are a huge number of positives and milestones to be celebrated for DHF and the automated security sector in general. If nothing else, it has brought us all together.”

“DHF continues to lead the way in training for the sectors that we represent,” he states. “We continue to raise awareness of the unwavering need for on-going improvement in automated security equipment, ensuring that installations remain both fit-for-purpose and safe to users and the general public alike, lobbing both nationally and internationally for our members, with publications such as the DHF TS 011:2019; our Code of Practice for the Design, Manufacture, Installation and Maintenance of Powered Gates and Traffic Barriers, which provides a framework to ensure a gate is safe and therefore complies with applicable laws and regulations. This was created in collaboration with DHF members and with input from certification bodies; it remains under proactive review by our DHF technical committees with feedback from our members and stakeholders.”

As one of the oldest trade associations in the UK, DHF is lauded for its efforts in advancing safety across all of the sectors it serves by means of its training and collaboration, and as a result, improvements are being made.

Yet whilst DHF continues to advance safety at every turn, the challenges facing the industry following the past year-to-eighteen months are undisputed.

“We have faced unquestionable challenges as a sector, for example, we are seeing longer lead times of component parts for installation and maintenance impacting both installations and maintenance. In addition, we are experiencing fluctuations in prices, such as the domestic price for steel products in Europe, which increased dramatically in the second half of 2020; again, this has impacted 2021. One of the main drivers of this has been a shortage of both domestic and imported steel products after demand started to recover, compounded due to the Covid-19 lockdown measures across Europe during 2019 and 2020, when a number of steelmakers had to idle capacities to balance supply with sharply declined demand.

“Availability of imports has also been limited due to trade protection measures in place combined with a global price recovery,” Martin continues. “Market sources claimed that traditional non-European Union suppliers preferred to divert material to alternative markets because, although prices in Europe recovered, growth was slower compared to other regions, such as China. This has created greater competition for supply. Manufacturers, providing product and services to the sector, have so far absorbed a number of these price fluctuations, but moving forward, the sector must factor in a potential price correction in the cost of raw, manufacturing materials which will impact the cost of goods and services.

“Throughout, DHF has continued to work closely with the industry and its 242 Gate Group members, demonstrating its support, and passion for a sector determined to become the best version of itself.

“We are also pleased to see the safe return of physical meeting events to support the sector, and DHF will be supporting Fencex 2021, in its 10th year, in October. If you are not yet a member of DHF,” concludes Martin, “I strongly recommend joining this ever-growing community of like-minded individuals, committed to making the security sectors the very best that they can be as we move forward.”
