FIT Show Makes Triumphant Return

FIT Show, the UK’s only dedicated trade show for the window, door, glass, hardware and components industry, has made a triumphant return with its delayed 2021 event (Birmingham NEC, May 10 - 12, 2022)

Organisers reported record visitor pre-registration numbers, with over ten percent of these being made on the day before the show opened. The atmosphere within the halls at the NEC reflected the appetite that the industry had to get back to face-to-face business, and to support its trade show.

FIT Show was due to take place in 2021 but was delayed three times due to the impact of the global pandemic. Reopening this May without restrictions, the event delivered over 170 brands as part of its exhibitor lineup and more than 30 hours of CPD approved learning content.

FIT Show event director, Nickie West comments:
“I’m still absolutely buzzing after returning from a very successful three days of FIT Show. We were anticipating strong visitor numbers based on our pre registration data, but I don’t think anything could quite prepare us for the atmosphere, goodwill and camaraderie in the halls throughout the show.
“Our exhibitors were consistently busy, our seminars reached capacity on more than one occasion and our late night parties saw people quite literally dancing in the aisles. It was everything the team and I hoped that it would be, and more.”

A number of brands used FIT Show as a launchpad to market, with debuts from the likes of Compdoor, Solar-Calibre, DAKO, Rockdoor, UK Doors Online, Checkatrade and Google Nest. The event also saw the return of a number of legacy FIT Show brands including Haffner, SmartReady VEKA, Ultraframe, Selecta Systems, Brisant-Secure, Business Pilot and Made for Trade.

Exhibitors went to great lengths to deliver a first class event for visitors, with ambitious and innovative stand builds supported by strong marketing campaigns. Morley Glass, FIT Show first timer Strongdor, and Britmet Lightweight Roofing won awards for driving and converting the most visitors with their campaigns.

Hot on the heels of its May 2022 event, FIT Show organisers have confirmed the dates of the next show, which will return to the NEC Birmingham from 23 - 25 May, 2023. FIT Show will continue to follow a biennial frequency, placing the show in Fensterbau Frontale’s ‘off year’. The May 2023 edition will be followed by FIT Show 2025 and return every other year thereafter.

It is an exciting time for FIT Show with 2023 marking the ten year anniversary since its launch, and its seventh outing. Organisers are already receiving a strong amount of support for its return next year.

Nickie continues:
“We have already had strong support for our 2023 event with 45 brands, including the likes of Haffner, ODL, Morley Glass, Selecta Systems, DAKO, Bel'M and Comar - amongst others - rebooking for next year. We’re also having positive conversations with a number of brand leaders who weren’t quite ready to exhibit in 2022 but who are planning to return in 2023.
“It’s going to be a very special event as we commemorate ten years of innovation, growth and success for the whole industry and we hope they’ll join us to celebrate this special FIT Show landmark.”

FIT Show brings every link in the fenestration supply chain together under one roof across three days. Exhibitors include fabricators, systems houses and suppliers of the leading products and services across windows, doors, flat glass, hardware and components.

Garador Steps Up for the Ride

Hundreds of fundraising cyclists have been successfully returned to their departure point thanks to the efforts of leading garage door manufacturer Garador.

The Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge is a major fundraising event to support the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. This year’s event, in May, saw cyclists of all ages, from 79 to 9 years old, taking part, riding the 54 miles from Watchet in North Somerset to West Bay on the Dorset south coast. But after completing the ride, they needed to get back to their cars.

Garador stepped in by sending their large capacity lorries to transport the cyclists and their bikes back to their starting point.

“We were delighted to be able to help out,” said Garador’s Managing Director Neil Discombe. “Our vehicles are equipped with special access systems so that the bikes could easily be wheeled into the lorries and firmly secured for the journey. Our drivers gave their time for free and successfully transported the cyclists and their bicycles back to their cars.
“The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance plays a vital role in the local community, and it is wonderful that so many cyclists were willing to tackle the very challenging route to raise so much money for this very worthwhile cause,” he added.

Bill Sivewright, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Chief Executive Officer, praised the efforts of the cyclists and all those who were involved in the organisation of the day.
“Despite the best efforts of the weather to put us off, this year’s Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge was very successful,” he said. “I take my hat off to every single rider.”

W40 steel profiles an ideal match for modern living

The versatile W40 door and window profiles, specifically developed by the Steel Window Association (SWA) for its members, are a stylish and modern solution that suit both new-build and refurbishment applications.

While the classic W20 section continues to be preferred by conservationists and many property owners for early 20th century and older properties, W40 exemplifies how steel fenestration systems have kept pace with modern tastes and technical demands, while retaining key attributes such as strength and excellent daylight transmission.

Today's W40 profiles, manufactured from hot rolled steel, provide greater flexibility than their predecessors, being able too to accommodate thicker double or even triple glazing units. They are also capable of creating larger window openings without coupling individual frames together.

Doors manufactured using W40 profiles and featuring double or triple glazing can achieve very good thermal performance, while further providing excellent security; with multipoint locking being an option.

The preferred IG unit for a building regulations compliant W40 steel window now features a 4-8-4-8-4mm construction, with two soft-coat Low-E panes; plus warm edge spacer bars and argon gas filling. They can also contain acoustic glass, making W40 designs ideal for many inner-city areas where noise pollution is a common issue.

The SWA represents steel window manufacturers, from expert restorers working with heritage bodies and local conservation officers, to large companies producing W40 frames for commercial offices and leisure destinations as well as modern apartment blocks, schools, hospitals, and other public buildings. Significantly, W40 profiles can be used to fabricate a wide variety of opening formats, including multi-leaf folding/stacking doors, in a full selection of RAL colours.

The SWA offers UK wide coverage with member companies able to carry out the full range of contracts from the repair and restoration of heritage windows through to the installation of major fenestration packages in contemporary commercial, residential and other types of developments.

For further information on the Steel Window Association or if you're interested in becoming a member, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk

New ATG Product Selector Tool from Lorient

Specifying high-performance intumescent air transfer grilles has just become simpler with Lorient’s new product selector tool. Manufactured to the highest standards, Lorient offers a wide range of fire / fire & smoke rated ATGs for doors, walls, ducts, floors & ceilings.

In everyday use, intumescent grilles allow air to circulate freely throughout the building; but in a fire, the intumescent expands to form a solid block that stops the fire from spreading.

Wherever ventilation is needed through a fire-resisting wall or where ductwork runs through that wall - an intumescent ATG should be fitted to maintain fire compartmentation. For cold smoke protection, it is vital to add our smoke control shutter - Talkback system.

The correct specification of passive fire protection products is critical, that's why Lorient has designed a new tool to help select the right product to suit a range of applications. There's are a number of ways to search for tested solutions including the comprehensive filter which uses different variables, including fire rating, building element, and level of protection.

It is also possible to search by product, building element and ID. Each search result is linked to a product and corresponding installation instruction, that also details the relevant test evidence.

Lorient intumescent air transfer grilles offer many benefits including a reliable solid-state design, that unlike conventional mechanical fire dampers do not contain any moving parts. They are easy to install, low maintenance; and can offer fire performance ratings from 30 minutes to in excess of 180 minutes.

They are also tested and approved in accordance with the very latest standards; including BS 476-22:1987 and BS EN 1364-5:2017.

Classic Car Community Divided over Re-Registration of EV Conversions

EV conversions divide the classic car community as 70 per cent of enthusiasts feel conversions should be re-registered in the new vehicle class.

With electric powertrain conversions for classic cars rising in popularity, a recent poll states 70 per cent of classic car enthusiasts want the Government to create a new vehicle class solely for EV conversions as enthusiasts suggest DVLA’s not keeping up with demand or proper documentation.

Converting classic cars to run on electric power and stripping their internal combustion engine and running gear has risen in popularity in the last decade. With TV shows dedicated to the conversion process, major UK companies upcycling classic cars into EVs, and with the average cost circa £20,000 - £40,000 for the conversion alone, it’s a growing theme and profitable business case.

To date, however, only modern EVs are classed as an EV on their official registration documentation (V5C), and the classic car community, through a poll by specialist insurance company Footman James, voted that this naming and documentation should change. Instead of classic cars continuing to have their internal combustion engine and designation, 70 per cent of (more than two out of three) respondents said that the DVLA should class them as a new class of vehicle.

Managing Director of Footman James, David Bond said:

“EV conversions are dividing the classic and collector industry and our [Footman James] clients. With modern EVs counting for 64,000 in registrations this year alone*, electric power is a small but growing sector. This is spilling out to classic owners who are also choosing to swap from petrol power to battery power.
“Classic cars by their nature are increasingly restored, modified and upgraded but interestingly, from the majority of our responders, converting from the internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric requires more official recognition.
“From the results of this poll, it looks our audience [at Footman James] want there to be a change and move to recognise EV-converted classic cars by the DVLA on the V5, and look at the green marking on the registration plates to show that they are powered by electricity.”
The poll, conducted by specialist and collector car insurance provider, Footman James, saw over 1,300 respondents. The official question asked was: As it stands, modern electric vehicles have their own DVLA classification and classic vehicles are given the historical class when they hit 40 years of age. But what should happen to electric classic conversions? Should they be recognised independently on a V5C, as a new class of vehicle?

1,355 people voted via an email poll. Of those, 942 people selected YES (69.52%) and 413 people selected NO (30.48%).

Strand Hardware MD Scales New Heights

Strand Hardware MD Steve Marshall is set to put his best foot forward to raise money for charity by undertaking the final lap of the Three Peaks Challenge.

He and his teammates are tackling Ben Nevis, ‘the daddy’ of the peaks next month (June), which at 1345 metres (4413 ft), has the steepest ascent.

Steve will be joined by his painter and decorator brother Richard, Rob Archer, of Record UK, Mark Roberts, of GEZE UK and Steve Newell, from Lovell Homes, who are raising funds for The Stroke Association.

To date they have raised approximately £2,000 for charities – supporting Cancer Research with their first trek up Snowdon in 2020, followed by scaling Scafell Pike for MIND a year later. In addition to the Three Peaks, Steve recently raised in excess of £1,000 for The Alzheimer’s Society when he undertook the Bridgnorth Lions Walk – a 22-mile route in Shropshire.

He began walking as a pastime during lockdown and ramped up his stamina in order to take on the mountaineering challenge.
“Like everyone else, I found being in lockdown frustrating. There was little to do other than go out for a daily walk to pass the time and get some exercise but once I started doing it, I found I enjoyed it and wanted to take it to another level.
“I must have mentioned it to my colleagues in the doors and windows industry because we soon found ourselves pulling a team together for the National Three Peaks,” he said.
The team have created a Just Giving Page and is urging their contacts to dig deep and sponsor them to achieve their fundraising summit.
“We chose The Stroke Association because stroke has affected close friends. There are now 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK and this number is growing. Services have never been more stretched and we want stroke survivors and their families to be able to access the support they need to aid their recovery,” he added.

Anyone who would like to donate should visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stevema

Virtual Engineer Wins ADSA Sponsored Award

Virtual Engineer, a technology solution for the control and diagnostics of automatic doors, gates and barriers, has won one of the illustrious 40th AI Specification Awards sponsored by the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA).

The innovative product from Strand Technologies was announced the winner of the Product Design and Innovation Electronic Award (Electronic) category at a gala ceremony held at the standout ‘Cheesegrater’ Leadenhall Building, in Central London.

Ken Price, ADSA’s Managing Director, presented the award to Strand Technologies’ directors Simon Bowden and Paul Ryan – a landmark moment for a company which was founded only last year.

Virtual Engineer was selected from a shortlist that also featured products from ASSA ABLOY, Codelocks and Salto Systems.

It uses a device which is attached to entrances and ‘talks’ to a cloud software platform for on-site or remote management. It sends alerts to flag up problems and identify potential causes – potentially saving time and money for engineer call outs.

Ken Price, ADSA's Managing Director said:
“I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to Strand Technologies. This is a major accolade which recognises the problem-solving nature of a ground-breaking product that blends electronic and digital technologies for the efficient management of assets.”

The biennial event was organised by The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Douglas Masterson, Technical Manager for GAI, added:
“We would like to thank ADSA for its involvement and sponsoring this award. We were taken aback by the quality of the entries. All the category finalists demonstrated effective electronic solutions which underpin a user-focused evolution within our industry.”
The Automatic Door Association (ADSA) was formed in 1985 to establish quality and safety standards for the automatic door industry. It developed the first industry code of practice which covered safety aspects of automatic doors for pedestrian use. This subsequently formed the basis of BS 7036: 1988, a code of practice for the provision and installation of safety devices for automatic, power-operated pedestrian door systems.

Its membership includes manufacturers, suppliers, installers and service providers of automatic doors – from global companies to sole traders. ADSA member organisations supply more than 75% of the UK market.

Mul-T-Lock Achieves a First in Security with Bristol University

As part of an ongoing complete security upgrade throughout the campus, Bristol University has benefitted from Mul-T-lock’s MTL™600 master key suites, designed and installed by Guardian Security Systems in Bristol.

Bristol University is one of the most popular and successful universities in the UK, ranked 62nd in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2022.

Mul-T-Lock has worked closely with Guardian Security Systems in Bristol, supplying high security MTL™600 suites to over 20 buildings across campus, all operated on a master key suite basis.

Says Antony Blundal, Security Services Manager (Systems) at Bristol University:
“University premises present a number of security challenges due to the open nature of the campus sites. There are different access requirements across all the facilities to consider.
“Working closely with Guardian Security Systems and Mul-T-Lock we developed a specification using MTL™600, which offers high security and is flexible to accommodate these issues and remain cost-effective. The master key operation is invaluable to keep maintenance to a minimum and the patent protection allows us better control of how many key copies are in existence.”

Patent protected until 2032, MTL™600 presents a superior locking solution, with a combination of several technological elements to create strong resistance against different types of lock manipulation.

The high security solution is available in various formats, to allow Guardian Security Systems to create master keying systems with different locking products across campus, including a wide range of cylinders, padlocks and locks, providing necessary protection and maximum convenience.

Ken Ham of Guardian Security Systems in Bristol commented:
“MTL™600 uses the latest design technology and highly automated production techniques to deliver precision engineering with unparalleled performance. This is why it was particularly suitable for Bristol University, who we worked with to design, build and maintain the master key suites across campus to ensure high-quality security, whilst also providing necessary access for staff and students.”

Ian Thresher, Regional Sales Manager of Mul-T-Lock added:

“The changing nature of the university ‘ecosystem’ in the UK, with significant developments such as rising tuition fees has many implications, including consequences for the safety and security of students, staff and the public.
“The legal and reputational issues arising from any failure to protect and secure people, physical assets and information data, are also increasingly severe. Hence, it is integral for suppliers like Mul-T-Lock and Guardian Security Systems to work closely with universities like Bristol, to understand the bespoke security requirements and install the best solution, such as MTL™600 to protect all those who attend.”

Distinction Doors Unveils Latest Addition To Nxt-Gen Range

Distinction Doors is proud to introduce the latest addition to its nxt-gen range, the nxt-gen Craftsman. This one-of-a-kind door style is exclusive to the UK’s largest supplier of composite doors.

Evocative of the 1930s, inter-war door designs, the nxt-gen Craftsman launches in two sizes – 838mm and 914mm. The glazing area can be enhanced with five decorative glass designs – Aspen, Edwardian, Kara Brass, Monza and Palma.

The new door style is available in White, Distinction Anthracite Grey and colours from the Distinction Doors bespoke colour palette, including six new colours.

The nxt-gen Craftsman is available to order through the company’s customer online ordering platform. It has been added to the popular sales tool – the door-designer.co.uk, and features in the new product brochure.

With this new addition, the Distinction Doors nxt-gen range now includes seven door styles all with the company’s exclusive flush-fitted beaded system and moulding. Hugely beneficial to Distinction fabrication customers, this range has the competitive edge requiring significantly less glazing time and consumables.

Distinction Doors associate sales director, Andy Grogan, says:
“We have seen continuous growth in nxt-gen door sales since launching the range four years ago. This tallies with rising consumer demand for flush products. With the launch of the nxt-gen Craftsman, we hope to capitalise on this further still.
“In strengthening the offering for our fabrication customers, we are giving home improvement and installation companies the advantage – they can offer consumers more of what they want. I am pleased to say that initial feedback from our customers is already extremely positive.”

The launch of the nxt-gen Craftsman follows several important announcements in recent months, including the introduction of a new brand identity, a new product brochure designed to enhance the consumer experience, and the inclusion of six new colours into the company’s bespoke paint palette.

If you wish to reap the reward from these investments and explore the benefits of the nxt-gen range, then get in touch with the UK’s premium composite door supplier.

IN2 Access & Control Ltd. Announces Expansion of Reseller Network for Self-Assembly Safety Edge Range

Shropshire-based company expands reseller network for popular ExpertSystem safety edge kits from Swiss manufacturer BBC Bircher Smart Access.

FAAC (UK) have been a long-standing reseller of the ExpertSystem self assembly kits in addition to the pre-manufactured safety edges. IN2 Access announces two further resellers that will offer ExpertSystem “kits” at their trade counters.

ExpertSystem kits will now be available for local collection from the companies below (as well as directly from IN2 Access):

  • Specialized Security Products (SSP) in Buntingford, Hertfordshire
  • North Valley Forge in Nelson, Lancashire
  • FAAC (UK) Ltd. in Basingstoke, Hampshire

Resellers will hold stock of the self-assembly safety edge kits, with customers able to collect same-day if needed. Additional partners will be added to the IN2 Access “approved” ExpertSystem Reseller Network with the aim of providing customers with a nationwide collection option.

Since its launch in 2018, BBC Bircher’s ExpertSystem self-assembly safety edges for automatic gates and doors has become a top selling range within the IN2 Access product portfolio. Superior engineering and ease-of-assembly means less time onsite and reduced maintenance costs.

“As the official UK distribution partner for BBC Bircher, we are excited about the opportunity to expand our Reseller Network of ExpertSystem,” says IN2 Access Managing Director Derek Foreman.
“We know installers and maintenance providers can often benefit from same-day collection so we hope the expansion of our reseller network will fulfil this requirement, whilst still offering a despatch service from our Shropshire headquarters.”

The ExpertSystem safety edges kits are available in six profile sizes, each kit containing enough components to make a complete edge in either 1.5, 2, or 2.5m standard lengths. Stocking levels at each reseller location may vary.

“We have long standing relationships with our three resellers,” Derek explains.
“They all have great name recognition that many in the automatic gate industry know and trust. We are building on that relationship and may expand the range of products they offer at their location as the reseller network program grows.”

To see ExpertSystem in action, IN2 Access will present at the Specialized Security Products Open Day event on 13 May in Buntingford, which coincides with the official announcement of the ExpertSystem Reseller Network across all three partners.

The SSP Open Day event is co-hosted by Roger Technology and features product demonstrations, training, and complimentary refreshments.
