Strongdor walk away victorious, winning Medium Business of the Year!

Steel door manufacturer Strongdor celebrated success by walking away victorious as winners of Medium Business of the Year at the Red Rose Awards 22.

Held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, the Red Rose Awards saw over 1,000 Lancashire businesses gather together, to celebrate the best of the best in a glittering ceremony on 9th June.

Businesses from the length and breadth of the county vied for titles across a range of categories, with only the best of the best, as selected by a panel of expert judges, progressing through to the shortlist and a rigorous interview stage before being rewarded for their excellence.

Managing Director, Tim Devenish said:
“We are all delighted to have been awarded the prestigious honour. Having moved to our new manufacturing facility in 2021, our production capacity has more than tripled and our staff numbers almost double. Without the continued dedication of our team who strive to maintain our mission, our journey would not have been possible.”
The judges were impressed by continual investment and drive during Covid, including the opening of a new 44,500 Sq Ft manufacturing facility in 2021. Commenting on why Strongdor were chosen for the award the judges commented: “Strongdor are bold and brave, committing significant investments to home-based manufacturing and their people and skills. They are paying off.”

Event founder Richard Slater, also the publisher of Lancashire Business View magazine, said:
“The Red Rose Awards, now in its twelfth year, are very hotly contested, so Strongdor should be very proud that they have seen off all the competition to win this award!”

Strongdor are manufacturers of custom made steel doors, produced in their 44,500 Sq Ft purpose built factory in Morecambe. Proud to manufacture their products in Britain, they are committed to maintain their reputation for high quality British manufactured steel doors.

As part of Strongdor’s commitment to transparency, they have opened up their factory in a 360 degree virtual factory tour, available on their website. Enabling customers to navigate around the factory to go behind the scenes and watch how and where their doors are made.

Lancashire Business View’s Red Rose Awards is the event where Lancashire business, commerce and industry are celebrated. It provides the best possible platforms to promote success, and to encourage trading within the county.

Since launching the awards in 2011 they have steadily grown and become the centrepiece attraction for the business community in the county with the sell-out ceremony taking place at the magnificent Winter Gardens Blackpool.

DHF Applauds New Fire Safety Legislation and Guidance

On the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell fire tragedy that claimed 72 lives, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) welcomes the announcement that cladding of the type used on Grenfell Tower is to be banned from use on any building in England.

The Building etc. (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2022 outlaw the use of metal composite material panels with an unmodified polyethylene core (MCM PE) as part of an overhaul of the English building regulations and associated guidance that will come into effect on 1 December 2022.  This extends the restriction introduced in 2018 on the use of combustible materials on the external walls of certain buildings over 18 metres.

In addition, the Tamworth-based trade association has welcomed The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, that come into effect on 23rd January 2023, whereby flat entrance fire doors are subject to annual checks and those in the common parts of High-Risk Residential Buildings (HRRB), require quarterly checks.

DHF has been a long-standing advocate of the critical role that fire doors play in saving lives and protecting property and has continued to stress that the use of fire doorsets, correctly installed and with robust fire door maintenance procedures, are a vital part of fire safety.
“The new requirement is that annual inspections are undertaken on flat entrance doors and quarterly checks on all fire doors in the common parts.  This is the responsible person’s role, and we support this wholeheartedly; this includes, for example, gaps around the doors, as well as the hardware such as door closers,” explains DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.
“We believe this is a long time in coming, but there are a number of benefits for our members and the industry,” Patricia continues.  “Most importantly, this change will ‘raise the bar’ for safety across the sector.  For our members, they are ready to embrace this change as many will be supplying the new complete fire doorsets to the installation companies, the components of which will have been tested together.  If this reminder of the tragedy that happened five years ago has taught us anything, it is that third party certified complete doorsets and compartmentation is key to help minimise the spread of fire.
“The announcement brings together the ‘golden thread of information’ referred to by Dame Judith Hackitt in her report, the passing down of information that is vital in ensuring that when maintaining the product, any repairs that may be required do not compromise the integrity of the fire doorset.  DHF welcomes this new legislation and continues to urge those in positions of responsibility to seek the correct training with regards to inspection, installation, and maintenance of fire doorsets."
She concluded, “There has been a lot of behind-the-scenes activity over the past five years, and now, I believe we are starting to see the changes coming through; we look forward to embracing them all.”

Renfrewshire Council improves School Security and Key Control with ASSA CLIQ® Remote

More than 70 schools and early learning centres in Renfrewshire, Scotland, are benefitting from improved security, key control and key management, as a result of upgrading to ASSA CLIQ® Remote.

With schools previously using complex master key systems, Renfrewshire Council faced a number of challenges, including consistency of approach, who had access to keys, and how this was managed.

To address these challenges, the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group recommended its ASSA CLIQ® Remote solution. To date, this has been installed in a total of 76 premises in Renfrewshire, covering a mix of primary schools, secondary schools and early learning centres.

The initiative won ‘Security Project of the Year’ at this year’s Fire & Security Matters Awards, recognising the impact that the ASSA CLIQ® Remote system has made to Renfrewshire Council. The awards celebrate the latest technologies and achievements in the fire and security sectors, promoting the importance of innovation while also underlying the highest standards of excellence.

ASSA CLIQ® Remote is an award-winning electromechanical solution, which uses high-end micro-electronics and programmable keys and cylinders to help the schools stay in control of access rights at all times.

Schools can update each key remotely, removing or granting access privileges for the key holder in real time. This ensures only those with the necessary access rights can enter an area, eliminating the security risks associated with lost and stolen keys, while ensuring schools can easily be opened up by other trusted individuals if the senior facilities operative is unable to unlock the premises themselves.

Scot Fraser, Facilities Manager at Renfrewshire Council, explains:
“Security was the main driver for choosing to upgrade to ASSA CLIQ® Remote, and has brought real benefits for our schools and education facilities, as we can be more flexible in how we manage access control, safe in the knowledge that these sites are secure.
“In addition to each school’s senior facilities operative having a key, spare keys are kept in a secure key cabinet in each of the five geographical clusters and all of our team leaders have access to keys and a PD unit so they can update key permissions on the go, without having to visit an administrator.
“ASSA CLIQ® Remote allows us to react quickly to sudden changes in access control needs and we are investigating the possibility of rolling it out as part of a change programme for our community centres.”

ASSA CLIQ® Remote is also in line with Renfrewshire Council’s sustainability ambitions too. The system’s keys use batteries, which typically last many years before they need replacing, and the fact that access rights can be updated remotely eliminates the need for car journeys to hand over a set of keys.
Scot added: “Finally, the support we’ve received from ASSA ABLOY has been fantastic from day one. From showing us demos of the system’s capabilities to IT training, the team have always been on hand if we’ve had any queries.”

Barry Harris, Regional Specification Development Manager at the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group, said:
“A lack of patent protection in the previous master key systems meant even if the schools had opted to implement new master key systems, the patent on these would have expired within 15 years or so.
“Once the cost of re-keying a suite was considered – potentially as much as £30,000 for a secondary school, and up to £10,000 for a primary – it was apparent that ASSA CLIQ® Remote would offer a futureproof and cost-effective solution for these sites.
“Finally, the fact the system can be scheduled to allow contractors access to certain areas for only a defined period was a big bonus. As well as providing a full audit trail of who has accessed a door and when, once the job is complete the contractor can simply return their ASSA CLIQ® Remote key and then the school can update this for any future workers.
“ASSA CLIQ® Remote is efficient, cost-effective and responsive. It delivers everything a school needs when it comes to security, key control, and key management, without the need for additional wiring to doors due to the cylinder being powered by the long-life battery in the key.
“Now, the facilities team can have one key that opens over 70 buildings in the region, with each member of staff also equipped with their own unique key, which can have its permissions changed in minutes.”

CPD Webinar: A Guide to the Design and Specification of Steel Fire and Security Doors

Join Bradbury Group on Wednesday 29th June 2022 at 11am BST, for their first independently approved free CPD Webinar, focussing on the design and specification of steel fire and security doors.

Why are security and fire doors so important?

The importance of ensuring that your project is protected from fire and security has never been greater, with burglary costing the UK economy over £8bn annually, and one in five sites affected by theft and vandalism each year. Coupled with that, the emphasis on fire protection has increased significantly in recent years, owing in part to the Grenfell disaster, which shone a spotlight on fire resistance.

The market for steel fire and security doors is highly regulated. But do you know what the certifications are and what they actually mean?

Why attend this webinar?

The webinar will provide an insight into the certifications which govern the security and fire door markets, as well as an overview of flood & acoustic door markets, and what these certifications mean to you. The webinar will also examine a typical product specification and provide a comparison of both wooden and steel door properties.

Bradbury Group will also look at the types of door formulation and options available before providing some recent project examples where these doorsets have been installed.

The webinar is eligible for one hour of CPD points, provided by the CPD Certification service and will be recorded for those not able to make the live event.

To register, visit this webpage and fill in a few basic details.

This webinar will be recorded for those not able to make the day. Please register as normal and the link will be sent to you after the live CPD.

For further information about Bradbury Group and their range of certified security and fire doorsets, visit www.bradbury-group.com.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Henry Poole & Co for this unique event in the heart of London that will bring together the very best of two worlds: that of automotive and bespoke tailoring.

Taking the iconic design of the Series IIA Land Rover - once championed by Sir Winston Churchill with Henry Poole & Co being his chosen tailor – there is no better way to celebrate Savile Row Concours than with Everrati’s new cutting-edge, redefined model.
We look forward to seeing you at number 15, Savile Row.”

Bring your own device: are external devices in your office ever a good idea?

Is your BYOD policy compromising your cyber security without you even knowing it? Here’s how to stay cyber secure while using external devices.

A ‘bring your own device’ policy in the workplace can cause chaos when things get out of control. Since the beginning of the pandemic, cyber attackers benefitted from our changing ‘work from home’ patterns, resulting in a huge surge of cyber attacks in 2020, a trend which we are yet to see reverse.

Since organisations reopened their offices, and implemented new hybrid working policies, ‘bring your own device’ has become a popular arrangement which enables employees to transition more easily between home and office working by utilising their personal smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

However, most organisations are starting to look carefully at their IT ecosystem for vulnerabilities, and BYOD policies are one of the key areas where many businesses are compromising their cyber security. Anthony Green, CTO of cybersecurity consultancy firm FoxTech, explains:

“External and personal devices are a major chink in many companies’ armours when it comes to protecting against cyber attacks. BYOD means that employees are accessing and storing data owned by the company on devices that are not company property.

“In the IT professions, any device that connects to your network is known as an endpoint. A study by the Ponemon Institute found that 68% of organisations experienced one or more endpoint attacks in 2020, coinciding with the boom in home working. This means that insecure and unprotected personal devices could be a real threat to the security of your data.

“It would be best to not have a BYOD arrangement at all, but this isn’t always realistic with personal devices becoming more and more embedded in office life. With that in mind, there are actions you can take to minimise the risks inherent in using personal devices for work.”

Here, FoxTech provides their tips for making your BYOD policy cyber security friendly:

Know the risks

Educating yourself on the specific risks of BYOD is extremely important and will ensure that you don’t sleepwalk into a cyber security crisis. The main risks include:
  • Easier malicious withdrawal of data e.g. users allowing malicious applications to access data
  • Higher potential for accidental data loss e.g. work data being shared in device backups, personal devices being shared with family
  • Higher likelihood of devices being unsupported or out of date
  • Users being less willing to report security incidents because they are worried that their personal data will be intruded upon
  • Increased risk of device theft and loss

Think it through

Don’t make it up as you go along. Just as you should develop written policies around the use of company devices, you need to create rules and obligations around your BYOD scheme. The National Cyber Security centre (NCSC) has an excellent guide to creating a Bring your Own Device policy here.

Work with your employees

One of the biggest challenges of securing your employees’ personal devices is the conflicting interests between the company and the device owners. As personal devices are not company property, the employee has the right to refuse device monitoring and the installation of security features.

Users will commonly worry that the installation of security packages could slow down their device and affect its usability. They may also be concerned that too much company monitoring will infringe on the privacy of their personal data.

For these reasons, it’s important to get your employees on side when it comes to securing their devices. One way to do this is to offer the alternative option of a company device. This means that if employees still choose to use their personal device, they may be more inclined to agree to security measures, as they won’t feel as if they are being forced upon them.

Communicating the risks of BYOD and the mutual responsibilities between organisation and employee will also be crucial to encouraging the safe use of personal devices.

Be cautious with your data

Don’t give anyone more access to your data on personal devices than is required for their job role. There are some aspects of your data, such as an employee’s financial information, that it would be wise to keep within a fully managed environment. When you are planning your BYOD policy, you should conduct an audit of each employee and department to establish where it may not be appropriate. Don’t be afraid to extend the policy to some departments and not others - the key is to communicate why you have made each decision.

Invest in cyber security monitoring

The Ponemon Institute’s annual Cost of Data Breach Report found that in 2021 it took companies an average of 212 days to identify a breach, and a further 75 days to contain it. The faster a breach is identified and contained, the lower the overall cost of the damage will be. This means that if a malicious actor has managed to infiltrate your system through a personal device, there is still time to prevent a full-scale attack if you are able to quickly identify a breach. The best way to monitor your system for potential breaches is to invest in cyber security monitoring by an expert cyber security consultancy.

If you are worried about any of the issues discussed in this article, or you would like to discuss how security monitoring could help your business, you can get in touch with FoxTech here.

GEZE’s TS 5000 ECline overhead door closer with guide rail combines accessibility and convenience in one innovative all-around closer.

GEZE, a leading manufacturer of door and window control systems has called the product the TS 5000 ECline, pronounced EASYLINE, to highlight the ease of opening the closer offers.

Providing barrier-free, easy to open doors the TS 5000 ECline is suitable for right and left single-action doors with a door leaf width of up to 1250mm. It also has integrated back check, and hydraulic latching action, and the closing speed can be individually adjusted.

In addition, the closer offers flexibility in installation as it can be installed on the door leaf on the hinge side or on the transom on the opposite hinge side and all functions can be adjusted from the front of the closer. The L version of the closer enables it to be mounted on the push side of the door.

It is part of the GEZE family of closers that have the same styling, perfect for when different closers are needed throughout a building, and it has the same fitting footprint as other GEZE closers allowing it to be fitted in place of other closers without having to re-drill the door.

With a closing force of EN 3-5 with variable adjustment the TS 5000 ECline is suitable for fire and smoke protection doors.

Andy Howland, Sales & Marketing Director of GEZE UK, said:

“The TS 5000 ECline is one of our most flexible closers and can be installed anywhere where the convenience of passing through a door easily is required and perfect for ensuring access for all.

Add in that it is suitable for smoke and fire protection doors and you have a great all-rounder!”

DHF announces plans to resume training in Ireland

Following a two-year ‘pause’ as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced its plan to resume its training programme in the Republic of Ireland.

In a very positive meeting held in Dublin on 28th April with Ireland-based members, DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens, General Manager & Secretary, Michael Skelding, and Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Steve Hill, outlined the federation’s intention to recommence one and two-day training courses.

In July 2019, DHF held a one-day public Level 2 Award in Automated Gate and Traffic Barrier Safety in Ireland, and such was its success, a second public training day for installers and maintenance operatives of automated gates took place in February 2020, a course that was open to all, whether a member of DHF or not.  At the time, Patricia described the expansion of training into Ireland as a ‘leap of faith’:

“We were delighted by the uptake of training courses in Ireland in 2019, and again in February 2020 and had planned regular events to build on this success,” she explains.
“However, following the onset of ‘lockdown’ in March 2020, these had to be put on hold.  We are very pleased to be able to kickstart our training in Ireland once again, and following our meeting with members last month, it is evident there is a genuine enthusiasm for this.”

DHF’s offering will comprise two-day courses (which will remain as members’ private courses), and one-day courses, both of which will complement any future auditing requirements.  The one-day course will once again comprise five learning modules with a short examination following each and presenting examples of past failures and prosecutions, as well as giving the learner the ability to accurately conduct and document a risk assessment.

“Last month’s meeting was the first face-to-face gathering to take place since early 2020 and it was great to see so many members engaging with our training strategy.  Since the meeting we have already received bookings for training courses from members in and around the Dublin area for their staff and customers, and Senior Training and Compliance Officer Steve Hill is ready to start in July.” says Patricia.
“They continue to help DHF by promoting safe and compliant installation and maintenance of Automated Gates, Industrial Doors, Garage Doors, Doorsets including fire doorsets, and we are keen to grow our membership here.”
