Combining Luxury and Longevity: An Introduction to PVD Finishes

When design projects require stylish and durable door hardware, PVD finishes may often hold the answer, says Daniel May of Consort Architectural Hardware.

During many architectural projects, door hardware can reveal itself as the final piece of the design puzzle.

Tens - if not hundreds - of doors and their supplementary furniture can be found throughout building plans, and whilst final design decisions may depend on project, preference and budget, specification professionals are encouraged to carefully consider material schemes to ensure user requirements are met.

With both style and durability key features of the modern built environment, decision-makers actively seek to combine these characteristics in their hardware selections.

Whether restoring a heritage site or designing a modern space, choosing the most appropriate type of architectural hardware finish is essential.

So, why have PVD finishes emerged as a leading choice for many architects, design teams and homeowners alike?

Daniel May, Director at Consort Architectural Hardware, explains:

“Physical Vapour Deposition - or PVD as it’s typically referred to - is a specialised ‘coating’ method that can be applied to door handles, hinges and other door and window hardware elements to enhance a product’s durability and appearance.

“The coated layers of a PVD finish are microscopic, yet, extremely hardwearing by design and as such, help to retain the quality of hardware over its lifecycle, regardless of the environment in which they’re installed.

“PVD coatings are naturally corrosion resistant and offer end users an exceptionally scratch resistant surface, making them suitable for high traffic environments such as hospitals, schools and even  demanding coastal environments.

“The protective coatings are often around <1.5 microns and are designed to resist chips, fading and corrosion.

“In comparison, traditional decorative electroplate coatings are 0.5 microns thick, which can jeopardise the quality of finishes and make them less durable in the process.

“From a style standpoint, decorative PVD coatings are typically deposited on top of stainless steel but can also be applied directly to other materials such as titanium or nickel alloys.

“Where low-quality finishes may begin to fade unintentionally, durable PVD designs are more likely to retain their operational benefits over time, enduring decorative trends and leaving interiors intact for years to come.”

By offering a host of technical and aesthetic properties, PVD finishes can be an excellent choice across a variety of settings, but only if specification is approached correctly.

As trusted manufacturers continue to expand their service offerings, collaboration is key to unlocking the many benefits of PVD, Daniel continues:

“Aesthetically speaking, a correctly specified material scheme can completely invigorate a space whilst offering long term performance, but modern design teams must be mindful of the disparity in quality between different suppliers, material grades and price points.

“Design professionals must seek the most applicable PVD material scheme throughout their project and choose higher grades of materials where necessary, as low cost substitutes are unlikely to match the reliability that premium finishes can offer.

“In addition, it’s important to remember that the use of multiple suppliers can have an adverse effect also, where a single manufacturer is able to offer a continuous range of PVD finishes of the same quality.

“By adopting a more collaborative and bespoke approach, designers and specifiers can benefit from greater freedom too, working with suppliers to create unique, high quality finishes that align with the design intent of the projects.

“The use of custom colours and colour matching services for example, can help to deliver a level of flexibility and cohesive aesthetics to a project.

“When paired with the natural durability of PVD designs, end users can remain confident that the chosen hardware’s appearance and durability will stand the test of time.

“Cohesive aesthetics aside, some PVD finishes will also include options with controlled Light Reflectance Values (LRV), which is a vital consideration when meeting some architectural specifications.

“LRV is a universal scale used in architecture and interior design and is used as a way of measuring the amount of visible and usable light that is reflected from a surface when illuminated by a light source.

“It is crucial in assessing the contrast between the door facings and ironmongery throughout specification, with standards recommending an LRV contrast of at least 30 points in order to comply with BS 8300-2:2018.

“Simply put, with more project considerations than ever before, design professionals are urged to work closely with trusted manufacturers when it comes to PVD finishes - because although the process itself may be microscopic, the benefits of PVD can make a monumental difference to any modern design project.”

Goodwood Revival to celebrate Alfa Romeo

The Goodwood Revival will bring together a collection of cars from Alfa Romeo’s competitive history to celebrate the centenary of the marque’s victory in the inaugural Manufacturer's World Championship.

Taking place across the weekend, the demonstration will feature Grand Prix cars, sports cars, touring cars and prototypes, including the machines that became renowned for competing at races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Mille Miglia and Targa Florio.

Visitors can expect to see the likes of the first Formula 1 Championship-winning car, the 158 ‘Alfetta’, Tipo 308C, TZ2 and Tipo 33 prototypes - each telling a story of bold innovation and mechanical artistry from 1925 through to1975.

The celebration will reflect on Alfa Romeo’s domination of motorsport - including celebrating the 50th anniversary of the marque’s victory at the 1975 World Sportscar Championship.

The Revival will remember the legendary drivers who piloted these machines, including four-time Grand Prix winner Antonio Ascari; five-time World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio; five-time Grand Prix winner and first World Drivers’ Champion Giuseppe Farina; and Alfa Romeo’s most famous and celebrated pre-war driver Tazio Nuvolari.

Earlier in the year, the Festival of Speed will also recognise the centenary of the Manufacturers’ World Championship. The Prologue class, which forms part of the F1 75 celebrations at the event, will showcase the cars that predate the World Championship, with examples from Alfa Romeo.

The Alfa Romeo celebration at the Goodwood Revival joins the previously announced VW Type 2 Split Screen track opening parade and all-sustainable fuel race list.

Book now to save on tickets during the early bird tickets

Customers can save on Goodwood Revival admission tickets during our early bird window, available now at goodwood.com.

About the Goodwood Revival

The Goodwood Revival is the world’s greatest historic motor race meeting, and the only sporting event of its kind to be staged entirely in a period theme.

More than just an unrivalled weekend of historic racing, it is an immersive celebration of vintage lifestyle, championing exceptional craftsmanship and the enduringly fabulous stories told by second-hand treasures.

‘Revive & Thrive’ is the thoroughly modern message woven through the Revival landscape; a clever stitch with which the old is made new again, it runs through every carefully restored classic car, each beautifully preserved piece of clothing as it is passed from one generation to the next.

It is, proudly, the world’s biggest and most glamorous second-hand event.

The site also features the company’s easy-to-use door configurator that guides the end consumer through simple steps and choices to create the door of their dreams.

Mirroring the style and content of the website, the new brochure creates a comprehensive guide making it easy to explore the entire range of products in one place.

Added detail, including technical information and sizing guides, provides everything needed to make informed decisions.

Hörmann has also introduced an eye-catching, colourful van decal to further promote the composite door range and new website.

Rutland’s RLP Letterplate meets the new TS008:2022 standard that supersedes the original TS008:2015

Manufacturers and suppliers of fire door hardware and components, Rutland Door Controls have tested their RLP Letterplate to the newest standard set by the DHF.

The RLP Letterplate makes one section of the new Entrance Door Hardware Collection (Rutland’s Frontier Collection).

Rutlands RLP Letterplate has been tested to the new DHF standard of TS008:2022; with the original version of TS008:2015 being withdrawn.

Rutland Door Controls are putting their efforts into educating and spreading knowledge to local councils and housing associations to support best practices on keeping up to date with standards on hardware.

The new standard of TS008:2022 looks at the opportunist attacks that might take place in a resident’s home.

TS 008:2022’s key improvement is the ‘fishing’ test, which ensures adequate resistance against key fishing.

For example, if keys that might be on top of a hallway table. The Rutland RLP Letterplate is stringent towards these new standards.

Alfie Hosker, Technical Manager at Secured by Design, said:

“Rutland are one of the first companies to supersede the withdrawn standard DHF TS008:2015 and ensure their letterplate meets the latest enhanced security requirements in industry in regards their letter plate to be UKAS 3rd party tested and certified to DHF TS008:2008:2022.

“It is imperative that where possible the latest security standards are met to ensure that products can meet the evolving criminal threat.

“I have been involved with Rutland & associated company over the years, and I am fully aware that they also strive to achieve the highest quality hardware that meets the latest industry standards”.

Neil Smith, Fire Door Certification of Rutland Door Controls added:

“This letterplate has truly been designed as the fitter’s friend, from easy to fit through to latest compliance.

“RLP Letterplate from Rutland is tested and Kitemarked to the most up-to-date TS008:2022 testing standard.

Even though building control approved document Q is probably out of date with stating TS008:2012 (two revisions behind), Housing associations through to doorset suppliers, are wise to choose ‘compliance leading’ fire & security hardware.

“Sadly, burglary and crime methods advance, so there’s bound to be further improvements to security testing standards.

“If I was asked to write Approved Doc Q, I’d state Letterplates must be ‘complaint and third-party certificated to the latest version of TS008’.

“This would help future proof building control.”

About Rutland Door Controls

Rutland Door Controls, a Chesterfield based fire door hardware and components manufacturer and supplier, is known by the industry through their mission.

Their mission is to enhance compliance and performance at every door.

They aim to achieve this by informing best practice, supporting manufacturers and resellers with specification practices and providing guidance and training to ensure the right product for the job is chosen.

Alpine Story: Alpine A110 R Ultime – The Pinnacle of Performance

Built in a limited run of just 110 unique examples, the A110 R Ultime is the finest expression of the A110. Assembled at the historic Jean Rédélé Alpine plant in Dieppe, the A110 R Ultime is a unique, emotionally charged ultra-sports car, taking performance levels to the extreme.

Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, it is around 20 seconds faster than the A110 R on a lap of the Nordschleife (Nürburgring, Germany). Producing up to 345 bhp*, the A110 R Ultime is exceptional for both its performance and its power-to-weight ratio.

Initially, Alpine engineers worked as a small ‘commando’ team on the A110 R Ultime project.

Adopting the stance of a racing team, they then brought in the foremost experts in motorsports to endow their vehicle with the very best in brand expertise: power, aerodynamics and ultra-personalisation.

For the first time, Alpine is putting in place an ultra-personalisation programme, giving customers access to a virtually unlimited range of combinations to create their own unique Alpine.

As well as offering a range of 28 body colours, the brand has teamed up with Poltrona Frau®, one of the world's leading leather specialists, to provide a choice of 14 shades of Alcantara® upholstery along with 10 shades of leather.

The A110 R Ultime, the sportiest and most exclusive Alpine road car of all time

Building on the critical and commercial success enjoyed by the new A110 since 2018, Alpine engineers set out to create the ultimate road-going version of this iconic model.

The A110 R Ultime was born in the Alpine engineering department. Given the extreme specifications in terms of sporting performance, the project was initially expected to remain at the prototype stage.

However, it was not long before these considerations were swept aside by an overwhelming desire to create a unique, emotionally charged vehicle for ultimate performance enthusiasts.

The car was designed around two major focal points: sporting performance and exclusive appeal.

The engineers were convinced that they could create an advanced-performance road car by drawing on Alpine's strengths – such as lightweight and aerodynamic design – and the expertise acquired in developing an F1 car, in order to boost performance without adding excessive horsepower.

The team was also able to draw on eight years of experience in high-level racing in the GT4 series. With just 110 examples built, the A110 R Ultime is not only a car of unique sporting qualities.

It is also a real opportunity for the brand to develop its expertise with a programme of ultra-personalisation. For the first time, Alpine is giving customers the opportunity to be part of a real co-creation process: the Atelier Sur-Mesure or bespoke workshop programme.

Assembled at the Jean Rédélé Alpine plant in the brand’s home city of Dieppe, the A110 R Ultime is the ultimate in performance, refinement and exclusive styling by Alpine.

The pinnacle reached by this version of the A110 will leave an indelible trace on the design of future vehicles, starting with the electric A110 expected in late 2026.

Philippe Krief, CEO of the Alpine brand:

“The A110 R Ultime is the absolute essence of what we want to achieve at Alpine, designing dynamic vehicles that place driving pleasure above all else.

“Delivering an unrivalled driving experience, this latest vehicle stands apart from its closest rivals.”

Alpine A110 R Ultime: built for performance

The design of the A110 R Ultime raised a dilemma for Alpine, which had to find a way to boost the performance of an already highly accomplished sports car, while remaining within the limits required for homologation.

To address this challenge, Alpine engineers and test driver Laurent Hurgon adopted the stance of a racing team, bringing in the best partners from the world of motorsports.

To further enhance agility and cornering speed, engineers redesigned all the aspects relating to dynamic performance: engine, chassis, braking and aerodynamics.

The vehicle gains a new DCT6 gearbox capable of handling this extra power. The finely honed chassis is built entirely of aluminium, making the A110 R Ultime one of the world’s lightest sports cars.

The suspension was completely redesigned with new Ohlins® TTX dampers featuring height adjustment and two-way hydraulic adjustment for compression and rebound.

The new forged wheels, measuring 18 inches at the front (10 mm wider than the A110 R) and 19 inches at the rear, sport an exclusive design and are weight-optimised.

The braking system has been improved, with compound discs of increased diameter and pads borrowed from the world of motorsports. The tyres are Michelin PS CUP 2, developed specifically for the A110 R Ultime.

The aerodynamics have been reworked, with a 160 kg increase in downforce compared with the A110 R. Optimised for track use, the vehicle features a front splitter with a flexible lip, fins on the front bumper and endplates on the rear bumper.

The modified cooling system relies on two vents on the bonnet which push the air upwards. Completing the improvements are a spoiler and adjustable biplane rear wing, as well as a ducktail on the beltline.

The engine gains new forged pistons and new connecting rods borrowed from the world of motorsports. The turbocharger has been optimised with a rebored casing and a new com-pressor wheel.

Mapping has been optimised for a 102 RON octane rating, boosting the out-put of the A110 R Ultime to 345 bhp or 254 kW (or 325 bhp based on 98 RON), with peak power reached at 6,000 rpm.

With its DCT6 gearbox, the A110 R Ultime delivers maximum torque of 420 Nm from 3,200 rpm, 80 Nm more than the A110 R Turini, for an equivalent weight of 3.2 kg/bhp.

The results speak for themselves: the A110 R Ultime is around 20 seconds faster than the A110 R on the legendary Nordschleife circuit, placing it in a category of sports cars that are generally far more powerful.

Laurent Hurgon, Alpine test driver:

“I drew on my eight years of experience at the wheel of the A110 in GT4. Every weekend, we fine-tune the set-up to improve our performance.

“We brought all these sensations to the development of this A110 R Ultime.”

A110 R Ultime, a vehicle of extreme refinement and an expression of French know-how

The exclusive appeal of the A110 R Ultime is also reflected in its design, and in a richer, more exclusive customer experience with full immersion in the world of Alpine.

Customers enjoy an almost infinite range of possibilities in personalising their A110 R Ultime to reflect their tastes and requirements, in the same way as luxury leather or jewellery brands.

Through the collaboration with such prestigious names as Sabelt® and Poltrona Frau®, Alpine is able to bring customers an exceptional choice of options through its Atelier Sur-Mesure personalisation programme, with new combinations of exterior and interior colours including 28 body shades, 10 shades of leather and 14 shades of Alcantara®.

Many of the exterior features can be body-coloured, including the aerodynamic carbon parts,  bonnet, roof and rear window.

In collaboration with Poltrona Frau®, Alpine designers created an interior with special types and shades of leather and specific refinements.

For example, all areas of the cockpit are upholstered in premium leather and Alcantara®, including the seat shells, door panels, inserts, console, dashboard and pull handles.

Finally, to celebrate the colour that defines the brand, the 110 examples of the A110 R Ultime include 30 in a version named La Bleue, with exterior paintwork featuring a gradation of two blues, and an exclusive black and blue leather interior.

Stéphanie Petit, Chief Designer, Colour & Material, Alpine:

“The A110 R Ultime is a car of bespoke design, just like a piece of haute couture clothing. At the Atelier Sur-Mesure, we will meet each customer to help them create the car that will fully satisfy them.”

Conclusion

As the most extreme and most exclusive Alpine road car of all time, the A110 R Ultime stands as a symbol.

It demonstrates Alpine's ability to aim for even higher levels of sporting performance, while paving the way for the brand's future projects already at the development stage: delivering supercar performance alongside the extreme refinement that is the hallmark of French know-how.

Jean-Pascal Dauce, Vehicle Leader A110 R Ultime Alpine:

“The A110 R Ultime is sure to make its mark on the history of French sports cars, setting the standard for innovation and performance.

“It is already a huge success with enthusiasts looking for the very best of Alpine. In fact, we only have a few allocations left.”

* Power achieved with 102 RON fuel (data subject to homologation).
