A Black Eye For Teckentrup...

After a very successful summer promotion that was extended to the winter months and featured a "colourful" eye and an "iced" eye as its signature, Teckentrup now has a black eye!

The black eye heralds the arrival of black as a trend colour (Trend colours are the most popular garage door colours that Teckentrup holds as coated steel from which door panels are made to order). Black is a rarity for sectional garage doors, yet Teckentrup is introducing two shades - RAL 9005 JET BLACK as a flat colour and, for extra impact, TT 9011 GRAPHITE BLACK  (TT refers to the micaceous iron ore particles that creates a stunning matt metallic effect).

Jim Rodger, the Teckentrup Depot's Sales Director commented - "We're often asked for black and we know it is a colour in demand. We've overcome the technical challenges that black presents and are delighted to give our customers yet another reason to win sales with Teckentrup products."

For full details of the new colours and a sample contact Jim Rodger on 01925 924050

With 5.6M Keys Lost each Year – Is there Really a Cure for the ‘I Had them a Minute ago…’ Dilemma?

Just 5% of all lost keys are returned to their owners. However, thanks to one smart new invention – 9 out of every 10 lost keys end up back in the hands of their master.

A quick glance at the statistic presents us Brits as a forgetful bunch: 5.6M lost keys each year with a return rate of only 5%. Even more startling is the cost of key replacement, weighing in at almost £900 for a VW Golf. However, the invention of Fabfob could soon send those numbers locking themselves in darkness for good.

Touted as the ‘smart’ way to lose keys, Fabfob is the latest invention from CEO Nicholas Brummitt and his team of innovators. The group previously founded “Wowcher”, a daily deals site sold to the Daily Mail Group in March of last year.

Fast forward to 2012 and they’re back in the spotlight again, this time wowing the market with a unique key fob – a tiny piece of plastic that is returning 9 out of every 10 lost keys.

The concept is frightfully simple. The Fabfob is attached to a set of keys, with the owner visiting Fabfob.com or scanning the QR code to enter their contact details into their personal online account. Users are able to enter as much or as little information as they want; all with the aim of having their lost keys returned to them.

Of course, the more information displayed to a finder, the more chance there is of having the keys returned! Fabfob owners can also set a reward amount up to £30 as an incentive for a finder to return the keys.

Should the keys go ‘walking’ and get lost, all the finder has to do is scan the QR code on the Fabfob, text the 24/7 emergency line or visit Fabfob’s website. After entering the unique Fabfob ID the key’s owner gets a text notification that their keys have been found.

Voila! The finder can then directly contact the owner or send them a number for reverse contact. Fabfob is global system and can be used anywhere in the world.

As Nicholas Brummitt explains, the Fabfob is a true revolution:

“We have all lost keys, we can’t deny that. The cool thing about the Fabfob is that owners often get a ‘found’ notification before they even realise that they have lost their keys in the first place!” he says.

When considering the cost of replacing car keys or having to deal with the security breach of lost house keys, Nicholas believes the Fabfob is a no-brainer investment:

“12 months cover is just £12.95, a miniscule spend when taking the hassle and cost of key and lock replacement into account. It’s exactly the reason nobody should leave home without their Fabfob” he adds.

More information about the Fabfob can be found online at http://fabfob.com/ including an explanatory video.

HAG Industrial roller shutter protects John Lewis store

An out-of-town branch of John Lewis in south London is benefiting from the enhanced protection of a HAG steel roller shutter, after vandals had targeted its large display window.

It's one of the largest shutters HAG have built to date, and has led to more requests for doors and shutters at other branches of the John Lewis partnership.

The premises in question, John Lewis partnership's "At Home" stores located at an out-of-town development. One of the building's main features is a huge retail display window – ideal for a furniture and interiors provider.

Because the building had been designed and built by developers and not to an individual tenant's requirements, no security shutters had been specified – these would be a matter for the occupier to decide upon later.

In this case, John Lewis suffered an instance of vandalism targeting the display window, and decided that a special shutter would be needed to protect their property and ensure they avoided any unnecessary interruptions to trading.

Custom large-format roller shutter

The shutter, measuring approximately 11 metres by 5.5 metres, is the largest HAG have built to date. Its installation depended on a skeleton tower frame inside the store, to support its weight.
Despite its size, its quiet electric opening operates as smoothly as any of the steel roller shutters that HAG supply, and its life will be prolonged by a regular maintenance contract. In the meantime, this particular John Lewis location is protected against further instances of casual damage that could cost thousands of pounds, not to mention the disruption to trade.Meeting the requirements in Croydon has led to further requests from stores in the John Lewis partnership.
Because over the years HAG have carried out a lot of special projects – unusual shutter requirements that other suppliers don't take on – it has helped them build up a reputation and be frequently recommended by word of mouth.

Aluroll launch the Fireroll FS240 Fire shutter

To complement the wide range of aluminium security shutters they manufacture, Aluroll has developed a steel fire shutter that has been tested and approved by Exova Warrington for fire protection up to 4 hours.

Technical Manager Jason Powell said:  "In 2011 we spoke to a number of customers and asked them how we could improve our product range. It soon became clear that our trade roller shutter distributors purchased large quantities of steel shutters from other suppliers as it was something we did not offer. They expressed a desire for a one stop shop for shutters and the Fireroll FS Fire Shutter is a natural progression".

For further information on the Fireroll FS240 product, please contact the Aluroll sales office on 01691 679257.

HAG Helping train tomorrows Tanker Captains

Would you believe one of the most unusual steel roller shutter orders we've undertaken to date was to protect working scale models of ocean-going oil tankers? - Paul Yearsley from HAG Shutters and Grilles Ltd recounts the story:

It was one of the most specialised jobs undertaken by our bespoke projects team, calling for a material we don’t often work with (stainless steel) and a surface we aren’t often asked to install upon (the surface of a lake).

Our client is one of the foremost maritime training centres in Europe: the Warsash Maritime Academy, part of Southampton Solent University.

Their training centre at Timsbury Lake, near Romsey in Hampshire, is designed to give students first-hand experience of ship handling in a true-to-life training environment on the water.

When ocean going oil tankers prepare to negotiate the tricky waters leading in port, the usual procedure is to put a pilot on board: someone with specialist knowledge of the local water and docks as well as general ship handling skills.

To prepare these individuals for the reality of handling a giant vessel on the seas, the centre uses scale-model tankers: much smaller than the genuine article but fully functioning, allowing instructor and pupil to get aboard. They learn their rudimentary seamanship and how to carry out demanding manoeuvres in the safety of a scaled down model.

Their need for a security shutter arose when the lease ran out where their tankers were previously stored. They needed to establish an equivalent storage facility. Naturally, in the dead of night the equipment was vulnerable to being vandalised or broken into.

Enter HAG’s special projects team. They were able to design, manufacture and install a stainless steel roller shutter. Having natural inhibition against corrosion, the shutter is able to meet the water level in their wet dock storage environment.

It’s obviously not a standard product, but it goes to show that HAG are able to meet just about any security shutter challenge. To find out more, and to talk to our team about any aspect of shutters or industrial doors, call our sales team.

Attention to detail pays dividends

2012 sees the "new" Wessex Doors celebrate its second birthday, Wessex customers are very positive about improvements the company has made to the quality of its garage doors. Wessex has concentrated on the detail of manufacturing processes and customer service, making refinements across the board that have had a positive impact on customer confidence and sales as a result!

2011 Improvements
2011 saw refurbishment of moulds across the styles and new moulds introduced to give a more balance to the proportions of Georgian gloss white garage doors. The new wide-grain "vertically boarded" Haxby was added to the range, side hinged doors saw the introduction of the Premier build quality with a "flowcoat" rear face for a stronger stiffer door and, back by popular demand, 4 crown doors now have a "flowcoat" rear face as standard. The new distribution fleet has improved delivery efficiencies and every door is now photographed prior to wrapping and shipment as a final quality check.

What next?
2012 will be a big year for Wessex Doors. Already introduced is RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey to the colour range for wood-grain doors, adding a contemporary option across
all styles. A new wide-grain York - unsurprisingly named the "York Widegrain" is also available now. Wessex is also working with a unique new resin to create a metallic range of doors due for launch in the second quarter along with GRP frames with an improved square edge profile. Just a few of the new things planned - further indication of Wessex's commitment to well managed improvements to every aspect of the business.

New literature is available covering all the recent additions and improvements - the new side hinged brochure is shown above. Contact Wessex Doors for your copies.

DHF renews its call for regular shutter maintenance following “near fatal” warehouse accident

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has renewed its campaign to encourage regular maintenance of industrial roller shutters following a “near fatal” accident at a Scarborough warehouse.

A worker suffered multiple injuries at the warehouse following the failure of a roller shutter due to the lack of proper maintenance. The man’s employers were fined £30,000 after they were prosecuted by Scarborough Council under health and safety legislation.

The DHF, which represents manufacturers of industrial rolling shutters, has repeatedly urged companies to ensure roller shutters are serviced and maintained regularly. Its campaign follows a series of workplace accidents where injuries have been caused by falling shutters.

At the court hearing in Scarborough following this latest accident, Steve Pogson, health and community manager at Scarborough Council, said: “This was a very serious incident that could so easily have had fatal consequences.

“The prosecution and heavy penalty should serve as a warning to everyone with health and safety responsibilities that they must ensure they maintain potentially dangerous equipment in a safe manner.”

After the accident environmental health officers carried out a full investigation, and the shutter was found to have had failures in multiple parts as it had not been properly maintained. Although the door had been subject to repairs, these were only undertaken when a fault occurred rather than being part of a planned system of maintenance and inspection, the court heard.

Said DHF general manager and secretary Michael Skelding: “Our advice to building owners regarding industrial shutters is clear - it’s vital that regular maintenance is carried out by a competent door engineer. DHF member companies have the necessary skills and they work to our DHF TS 004 standard for repair and maintenance of doors, shutters and gates. They will also be able to recommend a suitable service and maintenance schedule that will be based on the individual use to which the shutter is put.”

The DHF provides guidelines on its website www.dhfonline.org.uk to help all those who are responsible for maintaining powered shutters.

Available from the DHF website is the Code of Practice for the Repair and Maintenanceof Industrial and Commercial Doors which stresses the importance of regular door and shutter maintenance. The Code spells out what should be done to achieve optimum quality of operation with maximum safety in use throughout the full expected lifecycle of the equipment. Also available from the website is the DHF TS004 standard.

REWARDING WORK

At this year’s Institute of Architectural Ironmongers (IAI) AGM, some of the industry’s leading figures were awarded honours in recognition of their contributions to the industry and Institute.

The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) Trophy for services to the Institute was awarded to Mario Del Signore, Chairman of the IAI’s South East branch and long-time supporter of the organisation. He was presented with his trophy by GAI President Phil Newson. Mario has been instrumental in revitalising the South East branch and is one of the Institute’s most vocal advocates in the trade.

This year’s Paul Lewis trophy for customer service, sponsored by Royde and Tucker, was won by GB Locking Systems. The company is a relatively new member of the GAI but it is clear that their customer service is first class because they received several nominations from around the UK. “It is clear that they offer exemplary customer service, critical in the current climate where this can give you a huge edge over competitors who maybe offer cheaper products,” says Andy Matthews, the IAI’s National Chairman.

Finally Fellowship of the Institute was awarded to Chris Colley of John Monaghan Ltd. Chris has been actively involved in the IAI for many years, including a stint as National Chairman from 1998 to 2000. Originally from the South West where he served for many years on branch committee, Chris moved to the North in the early 00’s to work for Monaghan Group. Despite his relocation, Chris has continued his involvement with the IAI by holding various positions on the North West branch (currently he is branch secretary). He had several nominations for the award and the IAI Executive Committee decided to award him the Fellowship from a very strong shortlist.

Membership of The Institute Section of the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers is open only to those individuals actively engaged in the architectural ironmongery industry who have either gained the GAI Diploma or had such practical training and a minimum of ten years experience. For more information on the Institute visit http://www.iai.uk.com .

Michelin goes behind the scenes at Le Mans

Michelin is providing a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes action that goes into each 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Michelin has produced an exclusive video that provides insight into what the Audi team experiences in the run up to, during and after the iconic race, which takes place over the weekend of the 16-17 June.

In the video – http://bit.ly/Lz32Vv – Audi race engineer Kyle Wilson-Clarke talks about the rigours the team face over the gruelling competition.

While most people think of it as just a 24 hour race, Kyle outlines how the crews have to start very early in the morning to prepare for the 9am warm-up. Then the race doesn’t start until three in the afternoon – meaning the crew has done a full day of work before the race is even underway.

He said: “It’s a long one for the car but it’s a long one for the crew as well!”

Also in the video, Leena Gade, the race engineer for Audi’s R18 TDI, talks about leading her team and the vital checks that must be undertaken for a successful race.

The pressure that staff like Leena face is extraordinary. As Audi motorsport director Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich sums it up: “What we do in Le Mans is take a Formula One season and condense it into one weekend.”

Michelin has also filmed an interview with Audi racing driver and two-time Le Mans winner Allan McNish, where he talks about the quirky driver superstitions they often adopt before a race: http://bit.ly/LZuqtH
