Hörmann acquires the world’s leading supplier of perimeter protection systems, Pilomat

The UK’s leading door manufacturer, Hörmann has announced that it has acquired the majority of shares of the world’s leading suppliers of bollards, road blockers, lift carriers and tyre killers, Pilomat.

The recent acquisition means that Hörmann now owns 70 percent of the Italian manufacturer, and will now be available to purchase under the Hörmann brand.

The new product range from Hörmann will consist of reinforced bollards, road blockers for passages of up to six metres wide, lift carriers for passages of up to ten metres wide and tyre killers. The bollards are designed for perimeter control of private and public areas, such as pedestrian precincts, parking zones and company premises, as well as in high security places such as ministerial buildings, airports, and exhibition grounds.

Bollards available in this range include automatic, semi-automatic, fixed and removable, and all come with a matching appearance. An optional Emergency Fast Operation control (EFO) which lifts the products within 1.5 seconds is available for emergency situations.

With many contractors looking for manufacturers and suppliers that can provide them with a complete solution, Hörmann UK’s marketing manager, David O’Mara, believes the new product range will complement and enhance its existing offering and ensure that it is able to meet the demands of its customers, as he confirms:

“Renowned for the quality of our products, our recent acquisition of Pilomat not only enhances our product offering, but it means that our customers can now buy everything they need from a single source and receive on-site support from experienced Hörmann personnel.”

Free Swing Door Closers at new Mental Health Hospital

Samuel Heath’s Powermatic Free Swing controlled, concealed door closers have been used at new state-of-the-art psychiatric care facilities at Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

The £48 million Royal Edinburgh Building is part of a phased programme of redevelopment at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital campus being undertaken by NHS Lothian over coming years. The new facilities will provide accommodation for the adult acute mental health inpatient service, older people’s mental health assessment, Intensive Psychiatric Care Service and the new Robert Fergusson national brain injury unit.

Powermatic Free Swing door closers have been used on the main entrance doors to all 185 residential care rooms throughout the new building.

The door closers deliver a number of benefits for such projects thanks to their unique features and the fact that they are totally concealed when the door is closed.

Both standard and Free Swing versions of Powermatic are installed between the door and frame, making them invisible when the door is closed and particularly unobtrusive when the door is open. They can also be fitted within 300mm of the bottom of the door.

These factors not only make the door closers popular for use with continuous hinges in anti-ligature and anti-barricade systems, but also enable designers to create a more homely, less institutionalised ambience to the interior, free from the unsightly mechanical arms and control boxes that are an inescapable feature of surface mounted devices. The door closers are also less susceptible to damage through misuse, tampering or vandalism, which can compromise the performance of the door closer and door.

For psychiatric care facilities, these attributes assure a safer, more therapeutic environment, which is valued by clinicians, staff and patients.

Powermatic Free Swing door closers are connected to a building’s 24-volt fire alarm system and provide the added functionality of enabling the door to be operated manually and left open as desired once the mechanism has been primed by opening the door to its maximum. The door closer becomes operational when the fire alarm is activated or when there is a power failure.

Responding to a request from NHS Lothian, the door closers were recommended and supplied by specialist architectural ironmongers, DorSuite of East Kilbride.

Doors were routed to accept Powermatic Free Swing by CNC machines before delivery to site, where the door closers were installed towards the bottom of the doors by contractors, Morrison Construction.

Samuel Heath supplied specially adapted versions of the door closers to facilitate electrical connections via conductor hinges situated below the door closers.

Ross Robinson-Brown, Morrison Construction’s contract manager for the Royal Edinburgh Building, comments.
“Pre-delivery routing of the doors made on-site installation of the Powermatic Free Swing simple and efficient. With much of the facilities now in use, the door closers are performing well and the client is delighted with the outcome.”

Further details can be found at Samuel Heath’s dedicated door closer website, www.concealeddoorclosers.com or by contacting the company on 0121 766 4200 or email sales@samuel-heath.com.

2018 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE

On 21 November 2017, Aston Martin revealed the new Vantage: a dynamics successor to the biggest-selling road car in the British marque’s history.

Then, in an unprecedented synchronised launch in the evening, Aston Martin Racing revealed the new Vantage GTE: the spectacular new FIA World Endurance Championship challenger poised to replace the team’s most successful competition car of all-time, the multiple Le Mans-winning V8 Vantage GTE.

Built to comply with the FIA’s strict GTE class regulations, the new Vantage GTE takes the road car’s core design and dynamic capabilities to a whole new level through extensive optimisation of the powertrain, chassis and aerodynamics.

Designed and engineered in-house at Aston Martin Racing’s headquarters in Banbury, the project is led by Technical Director Dan Sayers, who also guided the design and development of the current V8 Vantage GTE – the car credited with 37 of the team’s 51 international race victories, including two Le Mans 24 Hour class wins.

Though the new Vantage road car has only just been launched, development of the new Vantage GTE race car is well advanced, with more than 13,000km of testing completed, including a successful 30-hour run at the Spanish circuit of Navarra. The car has also been through a rigorous durability programme at the notoriously rough Sebring circuit in Florida. All of Aston Martin Racing’s current drivers have contributed to the test programme.

Reliability has been exceptional straight out of the box, while the drivers have reported the car is easier to control on the limit than its predecessor – something that will make the Vantage GTE especially attractive to competitors in the GTE Am class, where top-level amateurs race alongside professional teammates.

Together with Aston Martin Racing’s engineers, the factory drivers have worked hard to optimise the drivability and performance of the base Mercedes-AMG 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine, that has been developed for use in the Vantage GTE application by Aston Martin Racing.

Aston Martin Racing is working with new technical partners: Alcon for the braking system, Öhlins for the suspension and Michelin for a bespoke tyre programme to maximise the performance of the Vantage GTE. Also, the in-house Aston Martin Design team, led by Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman have taken their intimate knowledge of the road Vantage styling and amplified it for the WEC version. The result is an extreme and exciting evolution of an already aggressive road car design – a lesson in Aston Martin’s ethos of pure form and function.

With a new car to develop, Aston Martin Racing has kept its highly experienced and successful driver line-up. This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE Pro class winners Darren Turner and Jonny Adam have been retained, as have the Danish duo and 2016 FIA WEC GTE Pro world champions, Nicki Thiim and Marco Sørensen. In addition, AMR has recruited ex-GP2 race winner and now Formula E racer Alex Lynn. Further driver announcements will be forthcoming.

Aston Martin Racing is also proud to announce a range of partners who will support the team throughout the 2018/19 season.

Hackett London remains the long-term Official Clothing Partner for Aston Martin Racing, supplying the team with all technical wear throughout each race weekend and a range of Aston Martin Racing clothing in stores worldwide. Likewise, Immun’Age, who produce immune system boosting natural papaya food supplements, continue their association with the British marque.

The team are also proud to confirm that Total will continue as Official Lubricant Partner. After joining the team at the beginning of 2016, Aston Martin Racing and Total have together delivered two world championships and a win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, underlining the success of the relationship.

Aston Martin Racing is also proud to announce a range of new partners to the fold. One of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands, Waldorf Astoria, becomes the team’s Official Hotel Partner, whilst Beats by Dr. Dre, the leader in premium consumer headphones, earphones and speakers, joins as Official Audio Partner.

Aston Martin Racing Technical Director, Dan Sayers said of the 2018 Vantage GTE:
“Designing and developing this new car has been an extremely satisfying process. We’ve collaborated closely with Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters to develop the road and race cars in parallel. Attention to detail has been a priority at every step of this process and we’ve made big improvements in each area of the car. We’ve spent every second optimising the design right until the build of our test car, which has paid dividends during our current testing schedule. This project has been one of the most intensive but also rewarding of my career so far”.

John Gaw, Managing Director, Aston Martin Racing said,
“It’s terrific to be involved in this exciting new chapter for Aston Martin Racing. The increasingly tough competition in the GTE class and the prospect of two visits to Le Mans and a return to Sebring within the 2018/19 super-season is thoroughly tantalising. To conduct the development process of this car so closely with Aston Martin’s design and engineering teams was essential for both road and race car to retain the same underlying DNA. We believe the Vantage GTE will bring further success worldwide to Aston Martin Racing in the coming years”.

President of Aston Martin Racing, David King said,
“Motorsport is fundamental to the DNA of Aston Martin and our commitment to the FIA World Endurance Championship is stronger than ever. This is a golden era for GT racing and today’s launch of the new Vantage GTE wil ensure that Aston Martin Racing remains at the forefront of the world’s greatest endurance series. The team has enjoyed incredible success over recent years with the outgoing V8 Vantage GTE and while this will hold fond memories for me, I can’t wait to see the new car race in anger at Spa next year and continue to write motorsport history”.

Trust in the Agrippa Magnetic Door Holder

Protect your people, protect your floors and protect your doors, with the Agrippa magnetic door holder.

According to Atomik Research, over one third of people admit that they have seen a fire door propped open in their building. The effects of wedging open a fire door can be devastating, as this allows toxic smoke and flames to spread through the building very quickly, in the event of a fire.

Further research by Atomik found that one fifth of people noticed that there are damaged doors in their building, such as holes, cracks and chips. This can further prevent the fire door from protecting the building, and be costly.

British manufacturer Geofire has solved both problems with the Agrippa magnetic door holder. The device is fitted to the wall to hold the fire door open using a magnet, avoiding damage to both the fire door and the floor. Agrippa differs from traditional fire door retainers because of its wire-free installation, as the device is battery powered.

Geofire is the UK’s leading manufacturer of hard wired fire door magnets, Nick Goddard Research and Development Manager, said:
“The Agrippa fire door holder isn’t like any other sound activated device on the market. It can be installed at any height, however, for a door with a conventional door closer, we recommend installing the holder at the top of the door to avoid costly damage to the door and floor, as well as for hygiene reasons in a hospital environment.
“The Agrippa magnetic door holder can be neatly tucked away on the wall behind the door to hold open heavy fire doors. We incorporated a red button into the holder so users can manually release the doors if and when they wish.”

Packed with features, the Agrippa magnetic door holder has a daily timed release option, to ensure all doors are closed at the end of the day; a battery level indicator, to allow the responsible person to check the status of the holder; and a low battery, fail-safe power cut, to ensure doors are not held open when the unit is out of battery.

Uniquely, the Agrippa magnetic door holder can record the sound of your building’s specific fire alarm, ensuring the alarm is the only sound that will release the fire door. This technology was developed by Geofire to eliminate false activations from other loud noises. Nick added: “Spending time recording the sound of the building’s exact fire alarm noise during installation could save lives.”

Wedging open fire doors could lead to legal action under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Act 2006 and Health And Safety at Work Act 1974. The Agrippa magnetic door holder is accepted by the UK Fire Brigade and CE marked to EN1155.

Trust in Agrippa to safely and legally hold open fire doors.

A Smart Space to Sample Yale Smart Living

Yale’s Smart Living range has grown from strength to strength and to reflect this, a recent revamp and extension in the Yale offices has taken place to create a Smart Living showcase suite.

The new space has a brickwork exterior to give the illusion of a house with roofline, CCTV, Alarm completed with a Conexis® L1 Smart Door Lock on the front door.

Now even bigger and better, the updated Smart Living suite will provide Yale with a comfortable space to invite customers to both view the Smart Living range, and give the opportunity for guests to get hands-on with the products in a ‘real life’ scenario.

This is ideal for demonstrating the features and benefits of products and for showcasing how they integrate with devices from Yale’s integration partners such as Amazon Echo, Nest and Philips Hue.

David Herbert, Business Development Director for Yale Smart Living, commented:
“The new showroom reflects our commitment to the Yale Smart Living range and how its success has enabled the range to grow and develop partnership opportunities with key players in the technology industry.
“The smart security industry is thriving as we see new products and innovations enter the market place every day. This provides a huge opportunity for the trade to capitalise on the developing connected smart home sector and increase expertise and revenue opportunities.
“From our consumer research, we found that 80% of consumers would want smart products professionally installed*. However, we recognise that some trade professionals don’t feel completely comfortable using the new technology and need to assess how they are going to develop their business models. Build UK Recognise ADIA CSCS Cards

Sites run by Build UK members will be checking the certification cards of all their workers on site, including both CSCS and Partner Card Schemes.

To ensure that sites are provided the correct information, Build UK have been given a list of Partner Card Schemes and the cards those schemes issue, including the ADIA BS EN16005 CSCS Partnership scheme.

Therefore, if you work with any Build UK members it is imperative that you complete the ADIA BS EN16005 course and exam, accredited by City & Guilds to ensure you get your CSCS card and get on site.

The ADIA CSCS card demonstrates that the engineer has proved they are capable of fitting automatic doors, according to the BS EN16005 and BS 7036-0. These standards are studied and put into practice with our e-learning course and assessment day.

There are several practical assessments that take place on a training day, which validate the skills of those who have been working on automatic doors for over a year. The day is completed with an exam finalising the knowledge required to safely work on automatic doors.

However, if you are working at an automatic door company and haven’t been working on automatic doors for one or more years you can apply for the ADIA Trainee CSCS card. This card will allow learners to go on site supervised by a qualified technician so they can grow their competence whilst working on automatic doors.

The card will be valid for 1 year and is not renewable. Once the engineer has been working on doors for a year or more, the fee for the card will then be deducted from the BS EN16005 course.

In addition to the BS EN16005, engineers can also apply for the Service and Maintenance course in order to develop their skills and knowledge.

It is ideal for those who wish to gain or simply extend their knowledge and training in automatic door servicing and maintenance. It includes:

  • ADIA Fault Finding Course (worth £150 + VAT),

  • Online self-study and learning with quizzes and mock exams,

  • Practical training day with assessments and final exam including lunch,

  • Engineer toolkit candidates need to service & maintain the automatic doors including: a newton meter, ADIA tape measure and an ADIA Test Box (worth £100 +VAT).

This is the perfect stepping stone to the BS EN16005 but is also a great course for those who wish to advance their skills and knowledge.

Build UK is the principal representative organisation for the UK construction industry, representing over 11,500 Specialist Contractors.

Heras Launches Its Safest Ever Sliding Gate

Heras Safeglide 2

Perimeter protection specialist Heras has pushed backed the boundaries of gate safety once more with the recent launch of its Safeglide 2 product – the company’s safest ever gate.

The Safeglide 2 improves on the existing Heras sliding gate model with a range of enhancements that makes it one of the safest options on the market, but one that is also easy to install and extremely reliable.

The development of the new gate comes in response to customer demand:
“We listen closely to the needs of our customers and always try and help with their requirements,” explains Geoff Miles, National Sales Director at Heras UK. “It’s this client dialogue that has led to Safeglide 2, as we found people were increasingly asking for a new product that combined safe operation and excellent reliability.
“And that’s exactly what we’ve delivered, through an ultra-reliable product that fulfils - and often exceeds - UK safety regulations, and that has been successfully tested for all relevant safety norms.”

Safeglide 2 is now the only gate currently available on the UK market that has been tested and approved to wind load class 3, according to EN 12424. In addition, each gate is equipped with emergency stop as standard and is BS EN 12453 and DoP certified.

And Heras has ensured it adheres to DHF TS 011:2016 – the code of practice that covers the safe installation, repair and maintenance of powered gates, something that has impressed dhf CEO Bob Perry:

“dhf was contacted initially by Heras to discuss this project regarding compliance to the technical specification DHF TS 011:2016, then later to view the prototype which resulted in a very positive outcome,” he comments. “dhf welcomes and applauds any member company who seek guidance, advice and opinion on safety and compliance of their products.
“Our aim is to assist our members in raising standards in the industry and provide them with the information needed to do so. DHF TS 011:2016 is freely available to download from the dhf website. www.dhfonline.org.uk .”

Safeglide 2 is also extremely robust and – despite its strength – lightweight and easy to maintain. This makes the gate very cost-effective, as maintenance costs are minimal and it has a long operational life.

However, customers are never far from help if a problem occurs, as Heras offers comprehensive post-sale service and maintenance through its network of nine branches across the UK. A full range of spare parts are kept constantly in stock and engineers are always available, so - in the event of any damage or malfunction – the issue is dealt with swiftly, ensuring that any out-of-service period is kept to a minimum.

This – as Geoff Miles says – is part of a wider company commitment to customer care:

“As a manufacturer it is our responsibility to ensure that all automated gates are designed, installed and operated safely,” he comments. ‘When you order a Safeglide 2 – as with all our products – one of our experienced perimeter protection consultants visits your premises to discuss design and installation requirements.
“We then provide training courses for installers and contractors, so they can learn how to install and operate the gate safely. And, after the gate has been installed, we visit once more to carry out a final inspection and provide the end user with a certificate.”

Safeglide 2 also benefits from being quick and easy to install, thanks to its prefabricated modular construction - a plug and play solution designed with installers in mind.

What’s more, the gate can be easily integrated with Geoquip detection products - ensuring a highly secure solution – and has a large opening width, up to a maximum of nine metres, to allow access for even the largest vehicles. Also, customers and end users have a variety of different sizes, colours and infills to choose from - ensuring seamless integration into an overall perimeter solution.

The launch of Safeglide 2 adds to the increasing reputation of Heras. Since its formation in 1952, the firm has grown from a small Dutch family-owned company specialising in fencing, into a global end-to-end supplier of perimeter protection solutions.

The Heras group now operates in over 12 countries - employing more than 1100 highly-skilled experts – and provides design, manufacture, installation and servicing of safe perimeter protection across all business, community and industry sectors.

Classic Motor Cars wins Restoration of the Year award for epic 6,725-hour restoration

The epic 6,725-hour restoration of the one-off Pininfarina bodied 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE by world-class specialists Classic Motor Cars (CMC) won the Restoration of the Year award at the Octane Awards, presented on Thursday 16th November in London.

This is the second time that CMC takes home the Restoration of the Year accolade; having done so previously in 2011 with the restoration of the Lindner-Nocker Lightweight, a legendary Jaguar that many thought to be beyond repair.

"The restorers are the only company to have won this award twice"

Nigel Woodward, Managing Director at Classic Motor Cars, said:
“CMC are tremendously grateful to the judging panel for their recognition of skill and craftsmanship of our team of specialists who created this restoration. We are also blown away to have won this award for the second time."
The awards are considered the most prestigious in the industry, recognising the elite in the international historic motoring world, and include a judging panel of industry experts and personalities such as five-time Le Mans Winner Derek Bell, collector and Pink Floyd Drummer Nick Mason, collector and TV Host Jay Leno, and the editors of Octane, Evo, Auto Express and Automobile, amongst others.

This XK120 features unique bodywork by famed Italian design house Pininfarina. It was first delivered to Automotive Hall of Fame inductee Max Hoffman in 1954, an Austrian-born, New York-based importer of luxury European automobiles into the United States, who inspired the production and refinement of several vehicles. It is believed that Hoffman inspired Pininfarina to reinterpret the shapes of the XK and then unveiled it at the 1955 Geneva Motor Show.

CMC purchased Chassis No. S675360 in 2015 from a German gentleman who had bought it in the USA in 1978 with the intention of restoring it but never got round to it. An epic 6,725-hour journey began.

During the forensic inspection it was found that Pininfarina had used the original XK body as the basis, also that a previous owner had painted the exterior in Burgundy, covered the seats with tan leather and changed various other aspects.

CMC’s specialists faced many challenges. Some of the original parts were impossible to find such as bumpers and chrome work, so CMC remade them by hand from photographs. The technicians also had to scan the front and rear end of the car in order to make mock ups of the lights, which were then scanned and reproduced. Smaller missing items were also produced in-house.

The rear window was missing and 3D scanning technology was used to scan the window aperture and make a new rear screen from the scan data.

There were no signs of the original paint colour, but when the front screen was removed, a small section of original paint was discovered and used as a colour match by CMC’s paint specialist.

The interior trim door cards were missing, along with the carpets and the original trim colour. A small sample of original leather was discovered when stripping the car down, which was colour matched and the original leather type and colour was used to recreate the original Ochre tan. The shape and pattern of the door cards were recreated by looking at similar Pininfarina designed cars from the period.

Chassis S675360 was one of the most challenging restorations ever undertaken by CMC, who managed to restore every aspect of it, from the unique body and structure through to paint, trim and mechanical elements, whilst saving as much of the original car as possible. It was unveiled at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it won the runner up award in the O-2 Postwar Closed class.
